Audley Travel introduces Rome as first short-haul destination

  • Share by email

Audley Travel is to offer Italy from next year – its first short-haul destination.

The upmarket, tailor made specialist, known in the trade for Southeast Asia as well as India and Japan, said the move was a result of customer demand for the destination and said Italy would be “the first of many European destinations” it hoped to offer in future.

Chief executive Ian Simkins, who becomes a non-executive director next year, said: “You know Audley as a long-haul tailormade travel company but the exciting news is that we are going to be launching Italy, our first short-haul destination for our UK clients. Last year two-thirds of clients surveyed said they wanted Italy as a destination through Audley.”

The operator, which recently appointed former Tui UK managing director Nick Longman as chief operating officer, who will take over as chief executive from January, has produced a dedicated Italy brochure, featuring 12 sample itineraries.

Simkins said the focus would continue to be on offering travel expertise and immersive, personalised experiences in destination, whether it’s a truffle tour in Tuscany or training to be a gladiator at the Colosseum in Rome.

Other Italy product offered, from spring next year, will include meeting artisans in Florence and learning to cook like a local, hiking coastal paths on the Amalfi coast with an expert historian and botanist, and touring the boutiques of Milan with an expert shopper.

Head of product Alex Bentley added: “We won’t be going after the Rome city break market.”

The operator is also launching a raft of other new products for 2019, including reworked Route 66 itineraries, luxury itineraries in New Zealand and Australia and new accommodation in Cambodia.

It has also announced cruise will be a key focus for 2019 with new ships in Antarctica and French Polynesia.

There will be cruises offered on three new ships: Ocean Expeditions’ RCGS Resolute launching this year; Aurora Expeditions’ Greg Mortimer and Oceanside Expeditions’ Hondius, both launching late next year.

New experiences are also being offered, such as tours in China with an 83 year old guide who was one of the farmers who discovered the Terracotta Army.

The company has also pledged to reduce its plastic consumption by distributing branded, sustainable bottles for clients in resort. This will be trialled initially in 15 destinations.

Adventures in South Africa

We have just returned from a fabulous holiday in South Africa. We wanted to make the most of our two weeks and were recommended to talk to Audley Travel by a friend. I’m so glad we did as the service and response from Audley has been excellent. Andy Freeman listened to what we wanted and put together a tour that exceeded our expectations. The experiences and accommodation were all super. Everything went to plan and we had a great time. Definitely will be recommending Audley in the future.

The planning for our trip was flawless

The planning for our trip was flawless. Drivers were always on time and uniformly helpful. Hotels were unique--not the usual chains--always lovely and well located. Guides were beyond amazing--knowledgable about history, architecture and art as well as warm and engaging. I can't say enough about Audley's travel services. This was our 6th trip with them and we are already planning another.

Costa Rica holiday

We chose to go to Audley again after they organised a great trip for us to the US 4 years ago. Will began with a chat with us to get a good idea of what sort of holiday we were looking for and then he put together a perfect trip for us in Costa Rica. The team has excellent insider knowledge of the places we visited and of the hotels and they gave us hints and tips, including restaurant recommendations and ideas of what to pack, to get the best out of our stay. Will was easy to contact when we needed to. The webinar chat before going away was also useful. Once there, the accommodation was generally as was described, although some exceeded our expectations. All guides and drivers were excellent and we appreciated one or two little surprising extras thrown in by Audley once we arrived. A memorable holiday - thank you.

A first class customer experience

This was the first time that we had used a travel company for our holiday and we are just so pleased that we chose Audley Travel. They were absolutely superb throughout. Our itinerary was put together by an in country specialist and our trip was tailor made to suit our holiday requirements. Communication throughout was prompt, their App so user friendly and the whole holiday ran so smoothly for us. Can't thank Anna & The Audley Travel team enough and we will, without doubt, be using them again for our future holidays.

Excellent experience

We chose Audley because my husband uses a wheelchair and we wanted to be sure everything was right for him. Audley were excellent, all travel arrangements and hotels were accessible and of a high standard. Jindy, our assigned rep, kept in touch and made sure any hiccups were sorted promptly. We'd definitely use them again

Jason Toms put together a trip of a lifetime…

Jason Toms put together a wonderful trip for my husband and I. Everything went perfectly. Everyday was a highlight. If I could pick one it would be the houseboat in Alleppey. It was a fabulous experience and the food was superb. Overall, there was a nice assortment of different types of accommodations. Our drivers Nagandra and Unni were just wonderful. The pace of the trip worked well for us. It was a great way to see India, we were lucky to be traveling alone, more local people talked to us so that was extra special. You put together a perfect trip for us, Thank you so much!

Date of experience : February 16, 2024

Hi Melissa, Thank you so much for taking the time to share these kind words with us. We are so happy to hear that Jason helped you and your husband plan the perfect trip to India! We are so glad that your experience was extra special as a result of the interactions you were able to have with the locals. We have already shared your feedback with Jason and his management team, and will be passing along your kind words to our partners in India, so Nagandra and Unni know how much they impacted your trip. We look forward to helping you plan your next grand adventure! Best regards Audley Travel US

Fantastic trip

My wife and I just returned from a fantastic trip to Agra and Rajasthan. Our trip creator, Jason Toms, put together an itinerary nicely balanced between urban and rural experiences. The rural sites allowed us to interact with locals in non commercial settings that weren’t possible in the urban settings. Throughout the process of creating the trip, taking it and upon our return, Jason listened, was very attentive and supportive, and was easily reachable. We can’t thank him enough for our very special trip. This was our second positive experience with an Audley planned trip. The local support and guides helped make the trip a pleasant experience. We look forward to working with Audley again.

Date of experience : March 13, 2024

Hi Chris, Thank you so much for taking the time to share this feedback. We are so happy that to hear that Jason was attentive and supportive during the planning process, and that he was able to create the perfect itinerary for you and your wife! We hope your second trip with us was as fantastic as your first! We have already shared your kind words with Jason and his manager, and will be passing your nice kind words along to our partners in India who helped make your time there so pleasant. We look forward to helping you plan your next big adventure! Best wishes, Audley Travel US

It was great experience.

This was our first experience using a travel agent to plan a trip for us. It was a trip of a lifetime, and we are ready to do more. We went from Perth, Australia on the Indian Pacific Railway to Adelaide. From there we drove the Great Ocean Road through Port Campbell and down to Melbourne. We then flew to Sydney before returning home. Our highlights were Rottness Island, Winery Tour, Kangaroo Island, Grampians National Park, Pinnacle, Mackenzie Falls, Boroka Lookout, Phillip Island Wildlife Expedition (including the Penguin Parade), Lanes and Arcades Tour in Melbourne, and Sydney Harbour Long Lunch Cruise. Anthony was thorough in talking with us about what kinds of excursions and tours we were interested in doing on this trip. He was there to assist us before, during and after this trip.

Hi Connie, Thank you so much for taking the time to provide us with this wonderful feedback. We are so happy to hear that Anthony’s thoroughness helped him create a trip of a lifetime for you and your husband! It sounds like you had several incredible experiences while exploring Australia… if you had to choose, what would you say was your favorite excursion? We have already shared your incredibly kind words with Anthony and his manager, and will make sure to share your feedback with our partners in Australia, as well. We look forward to helping you plan your next big adventure! Warm regards, Audley Travel USA

Once in a lifetime trip to Iceland

Audley travel organized a wonderful trip for my family of 7 to Iceland. We had fantastic, knowledgeable guides to help us get the most out of our experiences in this gorgeous country. We were basically taken care of every step of the way from arriving at the airport to being driven back. Our agent, Julia Mole was responsive to our requests and constructed the perfect trip for us. We really did have a once in a lifetime trip to Iceland including Northern Lights, Ice Cave, Lava tube, Highlands SuperJeep tour, black beaches, geysers, geothermic pools, many beautiful waterfalls, finding the elusive Arctic Fox ,and even seeing an erupting volcano (that we were able to get pictures of on our way back to the airport). We had a very happy group of travelers.

Date of experience : March 09, 2024

Hi Lynne, Thank you so much for taking the time to provide us with this wonderful feedback of your time in Iceland. We are so happy to hear that Julia was able to assist you in putting together the perfect trip for you and your family! Of all the amazing experiences that you had, we would love to know – was there one that stood-out above all of the rest? We have already shared your kind words with Julia, and will make sure to pass your feedback along to our partners in Iceland who helped deliver such a memorable trip! We look forward to helping you plan your next great adventure. Warmest regards, Audley Travel USA

Emily Norman was a brilliant specialist…

Emily Norman was a brilliant specialist to chat with about our honeymoon to French Polynesia; she listened to all of our wish list items and even included things we wouldn’t have thought of otherwise! The only reason we didn’t book with Emily was price related, hence the 4 star review, but I would trust Emily wholeheartedly with the rest of the process had we booked with her.

Date of experience : March 15, 2024

Dear ASMR Alicia Rockall, We wanted to express our sincere gratitude for taking the time to share your positive experience with Emily while planning your honeymoon to French Polynesia. Your feedback is truly valued, and we are delighted to hear that Emily provided you with excellent service. While price played a significant role in your decision not to book with Emily, we fully understand and respect your feedback. Your consideration means a lot to us, and we truly value your trust in Emily and our team. Should you ever reconsider booking with Emily or require assistance with any future travel plans, please do not hesitate to reach out. We are here to assist you every step of the way and ensure a seamless and unforgettable travel experience. Thank you once again for your feedback and for considering Audley Travel. We wish you all the best for your upcoming honeymoon in French Polynesia, and we hope it exceeds all your expectations. Best Wishes Audley Travel

Yet again Audley did not let us down

Yet again Audley did not let us down. They put together a great tour for us and the support we got from Shannon, who had a lot of local knowledge and the teams on the ground were excellent. This is out third tour with them, and we will certainly use them again in future.

Date of experience : February 25, 2024

Hi Martin, Thank you for taking the time to leave this lovely review. We are so pleased that you keep coming back to us and are glad that this third trip was just as amazing as the last two! We are so glad that Shannon took such good care of you and will pass on these kind words to her and the ground teams! We look forward to planning many more trips together. Many thanks, Audley Travel UK

Well organized

While we were not able to proceed with our trip as planned, I am thoroughly pleased with the assistance, communication and consideration provided to us by Caroline. She took the time and thoughtfulness in providing our prospective itinerary! Looking forward to future adventures with Audley Travel!

Travel in India with Confidence…

Just returned from a two-week trip to India -- Golden Triangle and a brief visit to self India. Overall the experience was first-class. To begin with, Audley’s US India tour manager was responsive and informative on all points both before and during travel. Audley’s pre-trip package is very complete and valuable to the traveler. Audley city office staff were consistently present at all key moves and hand-offs during the trip. The drivers provided a high level of confidence in difficult circumstances. The guides were well-informed and solicitous -- and able to calibrate the pace to fit our needs. The selection of hotels was excellent – both the new ones and the interesting “legacy properties -- and the prices were reasonable. Of course, standards of service would be considered “pampering” by US standards. Altogether, Audley provided a fantastic experience!

Hi Stephen, Thank you for sharing this fantastic feedback about your recent trip to India. We are so happy to hear that Cato was able to share his knowledge with you and help you create a first class experience! We have already shared your kind words with Cato, and will make sure to share with our partners in India. We look forward to helping you plan your next grand adventure! Warm regards, Audley Travel USA

Brilliant Holiday Company

Alison worked closely with us designing our dream holiday to Sri Lanka and the Maldives. She was there to change excursions that we felt weren’t suitable for our mobility and nothing was too much trouble. The live app was perfect to help us throughout our entire holiday. Our two centre holiday did not disappoint and more ticks on our travel itineraries.

Hi Debbie, Thank you so much for taking the time to leave such a lovely review. We are so pleased that you felt so supported during your trip, and your itinerary was modified to suit your needs and ability. We are glad that Alison was so helpful and we will pass your kind words to her and the ground team. We hope to plan many more adventures with you soon! Many thanks, Audley Travel UK

Fabulous customer service

Having explained what we wanted for our trip to New Zealand, Amy Waters put together a holiday that has exceeded our expectations. Every step of the process has been superb, with Amy keeping us up to date as she put plans in place and then through a video link prior to departure to go through everything.

Date of experience : February 20, 2024

Incredible Mistreatment on Solaris/San Jacinto “Cruise” to Galapagos: February 26 to March 4, 2024

My husband and I paid dearly (more than $16,000) for Audley Travel to book/arrange for us a once-in-a-lifetime trip to the Galapagos. We expected excellence. We received the opposite. Here is the cautionary tale about Audley (the center of greed) and the half-wit thugs who ran the boat. Let it serve as a warning to others to never use Audley for anything and to never arrange any excursion of any length with San Jacinto/Solaris if you care about quality and the kindness or competence of the boat crew.

Date of experience : February 26, 2024

Dear NOTNEEDED Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We understand your disappointment and the high expectations you had for this once-in-a-lifetime journey. We assure you that our team from the US office is actively addressing your concerns and working diligently to rectify the situation. We are committed to resolving this issue and appreciate your patience. Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Best Regards Audley Travel

An Easy Travel Guide to Rome, Italy

V isiting the Eternal City for the first time? Rome is one of the most visited cities in Italy and we created an easy travel guide to Rome so that you know the best things to see and do.

In this post, we’re sharing all we’ve learned from our vacations in Rome to help you plan your getaway. We’ll cover the most popular neighborhoods, the best things to see and do, how to get around in Rome, the best time of the year to visit, how to get to central Rome from FCO Airport, and tips for traveling.

Where is Rome

Rome is located in the region of Lazio, near the and is undoubtedly one of the most popular destinations in Italy. It has the highest population of all cities in Italy and sits about 1 hour from the western coast.

And when it comes to tourism, it’s no surprise that visitors from around the globe travel to Rome to see its beauty and Renaissance art, experience Roman cuisine and Italian cooking , shop the fashion capital, discover the piazzas and fountains, explore the historical landmarks, or even practice Italian phrases that they’ve learned.

The various neighborhoods are the most widely visited by tourists because they are where most attractions can be found. Traveling through the city is easy on foot, but you should also consider the Rome sightseeing bus or the Rome golf cart tours .

The Best Time of Year to Visit Rome

Rome can be extremely uncomfortable in the summer months (primarily June through September). In April and May, the spring temperatures are nice, the mornings are cool, and by noon you probably won’t need a jacket.

The Best Things to See and Do (by Neighborhood)

Each neighborhood of Rome has museums, churches, gardens, parks, and iconic spots to visit. This list gives a brief description of each district, and helps you understand what to see in each neighborhood. It will come in handy for deciding where to stay in Rome while planning your trip.

You may need to take public transportation to reach a specific neighborhood depending on where you stay. However, once you arrive, the area is completely walkable and getting from one point of interest to another is easy.

Modern Center

This neighborhood is located around Via Veneto and the Spanish Steps, the Modern Center neighborhood combines classic and contemporary influences. It has a mix of upscale boutiques, trendy cafes, and luxurious hotels, making it a hub for shopping, dining, and experiencing the modern side of Rome.

How to Get Around Rome

Getting around the cobbled-stoned streets of Rome is not hard. I’ve walked, biked, and bused throughout Rome and loved it! All are great ways to get around and the method you choose depends on how much time you have and your personal preference.

I recommend the  Big Bus Tour  or a Golf Cart Tour in Rome if you are short on time or if you booked your travel in the dead heat of summer (which can be intensely hot).

With these tours, you’ll see all the top Rome attractions with audio commentary in your language of choice. If you choose an open top tour bus, the added benefit is free wi-fi and for 3 extra euros, you can use your ticket for two days (it is worth it).

When it comes to seeing Rome, walking can not be avoided especially when getting to an attraction that require climbing hilly pathways or navigating ancient streets. In my opinion, being on foot is one of the best ways to travel in Rome.

Exploring the narrow streets can lead you to the most marvelous pasta, the creamiest gelato, or the most perfect pasta! I highly recommend visiting the Trastevere neighborhood for  Italian street food .

Public Transportation

This is the best option for getting to a part of town that is more than 20 minutes on foot, especially if visiting a museum or park. Save your energy and use public transportation for less than 2 euros. You can purchase them at the tobacconist store.

You will need to validate your ticket upon boarding the bus (it’s an honor system). Getting caught with an un-validated ticket can result in a fine. You should also use a really good map of Rome.

Bike or Vespa

Peddling around the city on your own time feels so liberating. Bike rental is very affordable and is an enjoyable way to experience the outdoors, get some exercise to make up for all the  Italian breakfasts  that you eat, and explore Rome.

You can find rentals for as little as 13 euros for 24 hours, complete with lock, for a standard bike. The price for e-bikes is higher.

Getting around on a two-passenger scooter is loads of fun!  Rent a Vespa to skirt traffic or explore outside the city. They can be rented by the hour or day. This will make your trip to Rome memorable as you travel in true Italian style!

How to Get to Central Rome from FCO Airport

There are several options to get from Leonardo da Vinci International Airport to the center of the city. I found the train to be the quickest and most affordable especially if you’ve had a long day of travel and want to get to Termini station.

The most economical way to get from the airport to the city center is via a shuttle bus service from the airport. You can travel conveniently between Rome’s city center and the airport and take pleasure in a stress-free arrival or departure from the city.

The ride takes about 50 minutes and departures run from the airport every 30 to 40 minutes so you have time to collect your luggage. Shuttles stop in Terminal 3’s arrivals section. Look for the respective service at the arrival platform.

Terravision offers a shuttle service for less than 8 euros it’s quite popular. The buses are air-conditioned and there is no cost to bring your luggage aboard. It goes directly to Termini station with no extra stops.

Another option is the public transportation system, which costs about 6 euros. The bus stops multiple times in the city center, including one close to the Vatican and one at Termini Station, throughout the 45- to 1-hour one-way trip.

Buses halt in Terminal 3’s arrivals section, at number 14. You can purchase tickets at the airport desk or online.

A taxi is quite expensive. It will set you back almost 50 euros and the ride takes just as long as a shuttle service (about 50 minutes). You can find the taxis at the arrival level of Terminal 1 and Terminal 3.

The Leonardo Express train is less than 20 euros and runs every 15 minutes during peak periods. It is operated by Trenitalia and the ride takes about 30 to 40 minutes.

If you wait to collect your luggage, and then make your way to the window or kiosk to purchase your ticket, note that many others will be doing the same. Hate long lines? You can purchase tickets in advance and be ready for validation after boarding the train.

I can’t recommend a car rental unless you plan a day trip and need a set of wheels. Rome is completely walkable. Not to mention, even Italians know that finding a parking space can be a hassle.

Tips for Visiting Rome

I adore visiting Italy. And no trip would be complete without seeing some of the most iconic and historic spots in the Eternal City.

Don’t make the mistake (that I made on my first trip) and skip these incredible spots! Fortunately, I was able to see them on return visits!

Whether you are visiting the Vatican for the first time or returning because you tossed a coin into the Trevi fountain, these Rome travel tips will come in handy to make your stay enjoyable.

  • Be prepared! Read these tips on the essentials for an international flight .
  • Think comfort when flying coach , it will help you stay calm and confident.
  • Beware of scammers, pickpockets, and panhandlers. It’s a thing in Europe and it can happen when you least expect it.

So, what are you waiting for? Book that flight to Rome and thank me later.

Travel Trends for 2022 from Audley Travel

Travel Trends for 2022 from Audley Travel

Bespoke travel specialist Audley Travel regularly conducts extensive research to ensure it is offering its clients exactly the range of options they desire for their tailor-made trips, which are designed for each client based on their budget, travel wish list and tastes. This is even more important as the world reopens, with travelers eager to make up for missed trips. From its research, Audley’s specialists have identified several trends in travel for 2022. Audley surveyed 1,446 people in April 2021. The respondents included people who have traveled, booked or inquired about trips as well as those who had expressed an interest in information from Audley.

Most popular destinations

The top destinations Audley’s clients will be visiting in 2022 are Italy, domestic US (with a majority of trips booked to Hawaii), Japan, Thailand and New Zealand.

Private lodging and facilities

As clients look to make-up for missed trips, Audley has seen a shift in the accommodation types that they request. From rooms and suites with private pools in Greece to exclusive use of safari properties in Africa, clients are asking for more space and private facilities as they book multigeneration family reunions or small group trips. The same trend is seen in Sri Lanka, with Audley responding to the increased demand for private accommodation with the launch of a portfolio of private villas on the southwest coast. In the Caribbean, private islands such as Jumby Bay, Petit St Vincent and Palm Island as well as hotels that offer separate villas, for example Bequia Beach Hotel, are proving popular.

A 10-day Private stay on Sri Lanka’s south coast costs from $3,995 per person (based on eight sharing) and includes transfers, accommodation and excursions. www.audleytravel.com/us/sri-lanka / 1-866-458-8170.

A seven-night stay in Palm Villa with a private pool at Bequia Beach Hotel , St Vincent and the Grenadines costs from $2,100 per person (based on four sharing) and includes transfers, accommodation and excursions. www.audleytravel.com/us/st-vincent-and-the-grenadines / 1-866-569-4753.

‘Beach plus’ itineraries – relaxation with exploration

As clients began to travel again last Autumn, Audley saw a steep increase in bookings for beach-only and single-center trips. These allowed clients to take a much-needed getaway, while keeping logistics as simple as possible. While these single destination trips remain popular with some groups (families, honeymooners and clients looking for a relaxing luxury break away in the sunshine), Audley’s specialists report an increase in requests for ‘beach plus’ and a return to more intricately designed itineraries for 2022.

While a typical Audley experience sees clients explore multiple destinations in one trip, a ‘beach plus’ itinerary is a first step back to this with clients enjoying a beach stay coupled with cultural touring experiences. It allows them to pack all their expectations for travel into one big trip without multiple border crossings. Many clients are choosing itineraries with a strong element of relaxation in nature away from the crowds, but teaming this with some immersive experiences that allow them to get to know the destination, and in turn take the first steps to the type of travel they love.

Popular destinations include Phuket, Krabi and Koh Samui in Thailand, with touring options including a treetop elephant experience, Phuket food tour, cooking classes or a community cultural experience. The same growing trend has been seen in Kenya, where it is possible to fly direct from New York and experience both safari and beach within the country’s borders and avoid the associated Covid-testing complexities of flying to a second destination, such as Zanzibar, for the beach stay.

Audley’s Europe specialists have seen the same, with clients booking itineraries that give them time on a beach as well as some cultural experiences in the Algarve and the Greek islands.

A 15-day Luxury Kenya safari and beach trip costs from $14,275 per person (based on two sharing) and includes accommodation, transfers and safari activities. www.audleytravel.com/us/kenya / 1-866-424-1995

Luxury rail

Interest in travel by rail is growing, with 84 percent* of people surveyed by Audley earlier this year saying that they were ‘very’ or ‘somewhat likely’ to consider rail travel for their next trip. This has risen from 74 percent in July 2020. More specifically, the number of people who are ‘very likely’ to consider rail travel rose 53 percent from 15 to 23 percent during the same period.

Audley’s specialists in its programmes from Europe and Africa to Southeast and Central Asia and the US all report increased interest in luxury rail trips – both from existing product and new offerings. New opportunities to travel by luxury rail include Vietnam’s Vietage train between Danang and Quy Nhon, with semi-private seating areas for clients, three course gourmet meals, WiFi and a head and neck massage included. In Europe, the routing of Belmond’s Orient Express now includes Florence, Rome and Amsterdam, giving more options for clients. Canada’s famous Rocky Mountaineer now offer a two-day domestic route from Denver to Moab allowing clients to enjoy the views through oversized glass-dome windows, with breakfast, lunch and complimentary drinks served at their seats, with overnight hotel accommodation also included. In Russia, Audley’s specialists noted bookings on the luxury Golden Eagle train , traveling along the Trans-Siberian Railway, increased four-fold before the pandemic. This is set to continue as travel re-starts with strong interest for 2022 thanks to the train’s off-the-beaten-track routing and luxury experience.

An 18-day Luxury rail trip across Russia costs from $24,995 per person (based on two sharing) and includes transfers, hotel accommodation, 12 nights on the Golden Eagle and excursions. www.audleytravel.com/us/russia / 1-866-584-4337.
