If that is the case, you must check what applies to your area when it comes to visa applications.

If you are submitting your application to another Schengen country authority abroad, you need to contact them in advance. The reason for that is because that country’s requirements for documents apply. The documents should also be translated into that country’s language.

This is how you apply for a visa

Most people who are applying for a visa need to do it through an external service provider. You can visit your embassy’s website to find out if your embassy has an agreement with an external service provider.

If your embassy does not have an agreement with an external service provider and you are applying for a visa through the Swedish embassy in Tehran (Iran) you can apply through our e-service.

If you are unable to apply through an external service provider or through our e-services, you can apply by handing in a form directly to your embassy.

Apply for a visa through an external service provider

Find out if you need to apply for a visa through an external service provider by visiting your embassy’s website. There you can find more information about to apply.

If you are applying at this embassy you can submit your application online:

You can attach appendices in the e-service. A complete application with attached appendices will make the processing of your application easier. Before you begin the e-service you should remember to prepare the appendices in digital format (scanned) so that you can attach them to your application.

Please notice that if you have not been active in your application (added or edited information) for 72 hours, your application will be removed. Every time you edit your application you start a new 72-hour span, but in total you can only save your application for 14 days. If you have not submitted your application within 14 days, it will be removed.

If your embassy does not have an agreement with an external service provider or if it does not offer an e-service, you must apply directly at the embassy. Keep in mind that it is important that you check to make sure what applies in your case. You can find more information on the embassy’s website.

After you have submitted your application

Waiting time for the decision

You will usually receive an answer within two weeks, however the processing times at the embassies or consulates-general vary.

After the decision

The embassy or consulate-general will make the decision in your case and will notify you if you have been granted a visa or not. If you have submitted your application at the company that collects applications for the embassy or consulate-general you will receive a decision from that company.

If you are granted a visa, a permit sticker will be glued into your passport. The permit sticker says when and for how long the visa applies.

If you are not granted a visa, you can appeal the decision to the Migration Court. If the decision has been made by another member state that represents Sweden, the decision can be appealed to that member state’s authorities.

If you want to appeal

If your application has been rejected you can submit a written appeal no later than three weeks from the day when you received the decision. Instructions on how to submit the appeal can be found in the decision.

If the embassy or consulate-general changes the decision

The decision might be changed if new information is submitted. In that case, you will be notified and your visa is glued into your passport.

If the embassy or consulate-general does not change the decision it is forwarded

If the appeal was submitted on time, and the embassy or consulate-general does not feel that there is any reason to change the decision, they will forward the case to a Migration Court in Sweden as soon as possible. The court will then make the decision.

Facts about visa

A visa is only valid for your stay in the Schengen countries for up to 90 days during a period of 180 days.

It says on the visa sticker that is glued into your passport how many days you may stay in the Schengen countries. The days can be used during the time period that is indicated on the sticker. The period is often 15 days longer than the number of days that you are allowed to stay in the Schengen countries. The reason for this is so that you will have a chance to change your travel date if something unforeseen happens.

The visa can be valid for multiple entries or exits

On the visa sticker it says how many times you are allowed to enter and exit the Schengen countries during the period of validity.

You may apply for a Schengen visa that is valid for multiple entries if you visit Sweden on a regular basis. A visa with multiple entries can be valid for stays of up to 90 days during a 180 day period for up to five years.

The visa may only apply to certain countries

If you receive a visa you can often visit the other Schengen countries as well.

Your visa may in certain cases only be valid for entry and stay in Sweden or in certain Schengen countries, for example if your passport is not accepted by all Schengen countries.

Calculate your visa time

With the help of EU’s visa calculator you can calculate when you can travel into the Schengen area again, and how many days you can stay.

Controls at the border

Your short-stay visa allows you to travel to Sweden and usually to other Schengen States. It does not automatically entitle you to enter the Schengen area therefore you may have to provide certain information at border or other controls. You may, for instance, have to provide information on your means of support, how long you intend to stay in Sweden and why you are visiting Sweden. In some cases, such checks may result in a refusal for the visa holder to enter Sweden or the Schengen area.

You should therefore carry with you copies of the documents which you presented when you applied for the visa (e.g. letters of invitation, travel confirmations, other documents stating the purpose of your stay).

Extend a visit

A visitor's visa is valid for a maximum of 90 days. If you have already stayed in a Schengen country for 90 days during the last 180-day period, you cannot extend your visa. Instead you can apply for a visitor’s residence permit.

Read more about a visitor's permit

Extending a visa

You can apply for an extension to your visa if your combined period of stay in the Schengen countries will not exceed 90 days in a 180-day period.

This is possible in the following cases:

  • force majeure – unforeseen events that prevent you from leaving Sweden or the Schengen countries, e.g. extreme weather
  • humanitarian reasons – if you or a close relative who lives in Sweden has been taken seriously ill, for example.

You can be granted a visa extension

  • if you have compelling personal reasons – this includes health care or a business trip.

The reason behind your need to extend the visa must have occurred after your entry into Sweden. You need to apply to extend your visa before it expires. Submit your application for an extension well in advance so that the Migration Agency has enough time to process your application before your current visa expires.

When you submit an application to extend your visa, you do not need to pay any fee. However, if the Migration Agency estimates that the application is based on strong personal reasons, you must pay a fee of 30 euros when we make a decision on your application. You will receive information on how to pay the fee before we make a decision.

An application to extend a visa because of force majeure or humanitarian reasons is free of charge.

How to apply for a visa extension

An application for a visa extension must be submitted before your visa expires. Leave your application at one of the Swedish Migration Agency’s Service Centres.

The Migration Agency's visiting addresses See also the instructions in the application forms for any additional documents that you may need to attach.

You should enclose

  • the application form Application for Schengen Visa, form 118031. It is available at all Swedish Migration Agency’s permit units and here at our website
  • copies of the pages in your passport that show personal data and all entry stamps. The passport must be valid for the time that your stay in Sweden is expected to last
  • an explanation why you think you should be granted a visa extension
  • documentation which shows the reason why you need to prolong your stay (including certificates from companies, doctor’s certificate or similar)
  • individual medical travel insurance which covers the costs which could arise as a result of emergency medical assistance, emergency hospitalisation or medical repatriation. The insurance should cover costs of at least EUR 30,000 and be valid in all the Schengen countries.

Applications

Decisions regarding visas.

The Swedish Migration Agency will send you its decision regarding your visa application. If the Migration Agency has decided to grant you the right to an extended visa you will receive a permit sticker in your passport as proof of your extended visa. You or a representative (someone acting on your behalf) should go to the Swedish Migration Agency to have the sticker glued into your passport. Your representative needs to be authorised by you.

If the Swedish Migration Agency decides not to grant you an extended visa, your application will be rejected. A rejection of a matter which is reviewed according to the Visa Code cannot be appealed.

You have the right to stay in Sweden for as long as you have a valid visa. If your visa has expired you lose the right to stay in any of the Schengen countries. If you have applied to extend your stay after your visa has expired, you do not have the right to stay in Sweden and wait for the decision.

If you have applied for an extension to stay in Sweden for more than 90 days during the last 180-day period, other rules apply. Read more under the heading Visits lasting longer than 90 days.

Since the tourist visa is a nothing but UK Visitor visa , you can perform activities that are covered under this. These include sightseeing, visit friends/family, medical treatment, take part in charity/voluntary unpaid work provided that it does not last more than 30 days, business-related activities such as attending meetings, training, as well as sports-related activities.

What are the reasons for a UK tourist visa to be rejected in India?

Normally, the visa applications are rejected for the following reasons -

  • Wrong information in the application form / fake documents submitted
  • Insufficient funds to support the stay
  • Irrelevant or unconvincing travel itinerary
  • Criminal history in the past
  • Previous visa rejections from the UK or any other countries
  • Passport nearing expiry/invalid
  • Incomplete application form

How many funds do I need to show for a UK tourist visa if I have a sponsor there to accommodate me?

There is no exact amount you will need to show for obtaining the visa. The purpose of the financial documents is to prove that you can support your stay, as well to show your stability and expense patterns. As a result, if you have a sponsor, you do not need to show funds except for your basic expenses. You will, however, require an invitation letter from the sponsor showing that you will be staying with them and that he will be sponsoring you and the funds.

Can I get a UK tourist visa after a family visit visa was refused?

This totally depends on a few factors such as the reason why you were rejected the first time, the integrity of your new application, etc. If your previous application was refused due to technical reasons such as insufficient funds, insufficient proof, etc, as long as your situation has changed, and you have enough funds, and correct documentation, etc, you will have limited problems in the application. However, if you had been rejected due to criminal history, or other major reasons, chances are that you will be rejected again.

Do I need an invitation letter to apply for a UK tourist visa?

No, you do not need an invitation letter to get a UK tourist permit. Unless you are being sponsored by a family member or friend, you will not require this. However, if you are applying for a UK visitor visa for a friend or a family visit, you will need an invitation letter. Alternately, even if you are applying to take part in tourism, submitting an invitation letter may help your application.

Does a UK tourist visa need medical insurance?

No, you will not need medical insurance to travel to the UK on a tourist permit. Since the visa is for less than 6 months, it is not mandatory. However, since healthcare can be expensive in the UK, it is suggested that you obtain insurance before traveling.

Can I apply for a UK tourist visa along with a schengen tourist visa?

No. The Schengen and UK have different types of permit. The United Kingdom is no longer a part of the Schengen region. Also, if you apply for the two visas at the same time, you will have to submit the passport for stamping. This will not be physically possible. As a result, you will have to apply for one of them first, and then apply for the other one after that. If you have aUK stamp, your chances of getting a Schengen visa will be higher, and vice versa.

What is the eligibility condition for a 2,5,or 10 year UK tourist visa?

To get the 10-year tourist permit, you will have to apply for the Long term visitor visa. This can be given for 2,5, or up to 10 years. Unlike the short term type, these are harder to get. You will need to provide sufficient proof that you have a need to visit the UK multiple times over the years. Also, you’ll have to convince them that your motive of visit over the years will not be changed. Also, you will need to submit proof that you will return to your home country after each visit.

Will a US visit visa help in getting a UK tourist visa?

Not directly. You will not receive a UK permit just because you possess a B1/B2 visa. However, if you have been stamped with US permit, your travel history becomes stronger and your credibility is higher as long as you have not overstayed in the US, or have been charged with other offenses. The US permit can then be a factor in convincing the consular officer processing your UK application.

What is important to include in a cover letter for a UK tourist visa?

As per the requirements, you will not need a covering letter for the UK tourist permit. It has been clearly mentioned that you should not attach documents that are not required in the application. However, for visa types that require a covering letter, they would usually require your basic details, the purpose of the visit, duration and other details of the visit, as well as the source of funds.

When can I reapply for a UK tourist visa?

There is no official waiting time to reapply for a UK tourist visa. When your application has been refused, you will receive a letter explaining the reason behind it. Depending on this, you will have to make sure that you have corrected the faults in the previous application and apply for a new one. It is suggested that you wait for a sufficient time to prove that your situations or documents have been improved for the new application.

Are criminal checks carried out on all UK tourist visa applicants?

The UK have the right to check your criminal record if required. If you have lied in the application form about any convictions, your application will be rejected, and you may even be banned for up to 10 years.

Can I get the UK tourist visa even if I am unemployed?

Now that you have already visited the UK on a tourist visa, the visa officers will look into your stay and the period. If you had failed to follow any of your visa regulations, you will be rejected.

How can I extend my UK tourist visa?

Normally, you cannot extend your UK tourist visa. You will have to leave the country and then reapply for another visa. However, under extreme circumstances such as unforeseeable emergency reasons, you will be permitted to have an additional 14 day stay in the country. These include medical reasons, issues where your home country is not safe, etc. Once this is done, you will have to leave the country no matter what.

What are the chances of denial of UK tourist visa if you have no travel history and are travelling for the first time?

The chances of denial are solely dependant on your application and the documents. Since you are traveling for the first time, you do not have any history of visa rejections. As a result, you are free from that. However, the rest of the factors still affect you such as the authenticity of the documents, solid purpose, funds, correct information, etc

Is it necessary to submit my UK tourist visa application online?

Yes, for applications for the UK permit from outside the UK, it has to be made online. The offline application is not followed anymore. For the online application, you will have to create an account on the visa and immigration services website, or on the beta Visa4Uk website. You can then proceed with the application based on the instructions.

What are the documents required from a sponsor for a UK tourist visa and how much bank balance is required?

If you are being sponsored by someone for your UK tourist permit, they will have to submit a few documents. They will have to submit an invitation letter stating their details, and also confirm that you will be staying with them and that they will be supporting your stay. For the bank balance, there is no specific amount to be shown. The UK government requires that you have sufficient funds to support your stay. This includes food, accommodation, travel, and other basic necessities.

UK Tourist Visa from India [2024 Ultimate Guide]

Do indians need a visa to enter the uk.

Yes, Indian citizens do require a visa to enter the UK for any purpose, including tourism.

Unlike some other countries that offer visa-on-arrival or visa-free entry to Indian citizens, the UK mandates a visa for all categories of travel.

This makes it essential to apply well in advance of your planned travel date and ensure that all documentation and requirements are meticulously met.

What Is The UK Tourist Visa?

The UK tourist visa, more formally known as the Standard Visitor Visa, is designed for individuals who wish to travel to the United Kingdom for leisure, tourism, to visit friends or family, or even for short business visits.

This visa type is not suitable for those who intend to work, study for an extended period, or stay permanently in the UK.

Typically, the Standard Visitor Visa is valid for up to 6 months.

There are also options for longer-term visitor visas, which last 2, 5, or 10 years, but you can only stay for a maximum of 6 months during any given year.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for a UK tourist visa, an applicant must meet several conditions:

  • Intention to Leave : The applicant must demonstrate a clear intention to exit the UK at the end of their visit. This often involves proving ties to their home country, like a job or family responsibilities.
  • Financial Solvency : The applicant must show that they have enough funds to support themselves—and any dependents—during the stay without relying on public funds.
  • Work Restrictions : The applicant should not have the intent to take up employment, produce goods, or provide services while in the UK.
  • Marital Status : The applicant must not intend to marry or register a civil partnership in the UK during their visit.

What Are The Required Documents?

Acquiring a UK tourist visa requires various documents, including:

  • Valid Passport : Must be valid for the entire duration of your stay.
  • Proof of Accommodation : Confirmation of where you’ll be staying, whether it’s a hotel booking or a letter from a friend or family member.
  • Bank Statements : To verify you have sufficient funds for your visit.
  • Employment Letter : A letter from your employer confirming your employment status and leave of absence.
  • Travel Itinerary : A detailed plan of your activities and places you plan to visit.
  • Proof of Relationship : Required if you are visiting family or friends, to confirm your connection.
  • Travel Insurance : While not mandatory, it is highly recommended.
  • Biometric Information : Fingerprints and a digital photograph will be taken during the application process.

The Application Process

For Indian nationals applying for a UK tourist visa in 2024, the application process is generally as follows:

Step 1: Complete the Online Application

Start your application by filling out the form online on the UK government’s official website. This form will ask for details such as your personal information, previous travel history, the purpose of your visit, and other particulars relevant to your application.

Step 2: Pay the Visa Fee

After finalizing your online application, you’ll be directed to the payment page. As of 2024, the application fee for a Standard Visitor Visa is £115.

Step 3: Schedule an Appointment

Once the payment is successfully processed, you’ll have the option to schedule an appointment for biometric data collection at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) in India.

Step 4: Attend the Biometric Appointment

On the day of your appointment, head to the VAC to have your fingerprints and a digital photograph taken. This is also when you will submit your passport and any additional supporting documentation.

Step 5: Attend the Interview (if required)

Some applicants, based on their answers in the application or their background, may be required to attend a visa interview. You will be informed in advance if this step is necessary.

Step 6: Receive the Visa Decision

Generally, visa decisions are communicated within 3 weeks from the date of the biometric appointment. Upon approval, you will either receive your passport with the visa stamp via post or be notified to collect it in person from the VAC.

What Is the Standard Processing Time?

Understanding the processing time for a UK tourist visa is crucial for planning your trip effectively. While timelines can vary depending on a host of factors such as the time of year, the volume of applications, and individual case complexities, the general guidelines offer a reasonable estimate.

Standard Processing Time

For the Standard Visitor Visa for Indians applying in 2024, the usual processing time is approximately 3 weeks (15 working days) from the date of your biometric appointment at the Visa Application Centre (VAC).

This timeframe applies to straightforward cases that do not require additional scrutiny or verification.

Factors That May Affect Processing Time

  • Incomplete Documentation : Failing to submit all required documents may lead to delays or even a visa refusal.
  • High Volume Seasons : Peak travel seasons like summer or significant holidays can result in longer processing times due to increased application volumes.
  • Additional Verification : Sometimes, the UK visa authorities may require extra time to verify certain aspects of your application, like financial or employment details.
  • Interview Requirement : If you are called in for an interview, this could extend the time it takes to process your application.
  • Public Holidays : Note that public holidays can affect the processing time, as visa offices may be closed.

Expedited Services: Fast-Tracking Your Application

The UK visa services offer priority and super-priority services for an additional fee, which is particularly useful for applicants who need their visa quickly.

  • Priority Service : Aims to process your application within 5 working days. The fee of £500 is additional to the regular visa fee.
  • Super-Priority Service : Aims to process your application by the end of the next working day. This service comes with a significantly higher fee of £1000.

Remember, using these services does not guarantee visa approval; it only speeds up the processing time.

Can I Extend the UK Tourist Visa?

Typically, a Standard Visitor Visa is valid for up to 6 months. If you have a long-term Standard Visitor Visa that lasts 2, 5, or 10 years, you can still only stay for a maximum of 6 months during any given 12-month period.

Extensions are generally possible but must meet certain conditions and are not guaranteed.

Eligibility Criteria for Extension

  • Reason for Extension : You must have a valid reason for the extension that aligns with the original purpose of your visit, whether it’s tourism, visiting family, or a short business trip.
  • Funds : You must demonstrate that you have sufficient funds to support yourself for the extended period without relying on public funds.
  • Initial Visa Compliance : You must have complied with the terms of your original visa, including not working or accessing public funds.
  • Timing : Importantly, the application for extension must be made before your current visa expires. Overstaying your visa is a violation of UK immigration law and can result in a ban on returning to the UK.

Application Process

  • Form : To apply for an extension, you must complete the online form FLR (Form to Request Leave to Remain) on the UK government’s official website.
  • Fee : There is a £1000 fee for extending your UK tourist visa.
  • Documents : You’ll be required to submit the same types of supporting documents as you did for the original visa application. This includes proof of funds, travel itinerary, and any other documents that substantiate your reason for extending your stay.
  • Biometric Information : Similar to the initial application, you’ll need to provide biometric data (fingerprints and a digital photo) as part of the extension process.
  • Processing Time : The time it takes to process an extension varies, but it is generally up to 8 weeks. A £1000 super priority service is available to reduce the processing time to 1 working day.

Visa Centres in India

If you are in India and looking to apply for a tourist visa to visit the UK, there are several application centres where you can submit your documents and attend interviews. These centres are operated by VFS Global or other authorized agencies and are situated in various cities across India.

What Are The Most Common Refusal Reasons?

Tourist visas from India to the UK are generally straightforward but can sometimes be refused due to various reasons. Some common factors include:

  • Incomplete Documentation : Missing or incomplete documents can lead to immediate refusal.
  • Financial Instability : Inability to prove you can financially sustain yourself during the UK trip.
  • Unclear Purpose of Visit : If the authorities find the reason for your visit unclear or doubtful, your visa may be denied.
  • Prior Immigration Violations : Overstays, illegal entry, or working on a previous tourist visa can significantly impact the decision.
  • False or Misleading Information : Submission of fraudulent documents or incorrect details is a ground for immediate refusal.

What Happens If Your Visa Is Refused?

Being refused a UK tourist visa can be disappointing, but it’s not the end of the road. Here’s what generally happens:

  • Notification : You will receive a refusal letter detailing the reasons for the denial.
  • Appeal : Depending on the visa type and the refusal reasons, you may have the right to appeal. The appeal process can be complicated and time-consuming.
  • Reapplication : You can always reapply, but it’s crucial to address the issues that led to the initial refusal effectively.
  • Consult an Expert : Given the complexities surrounding visa refusals, consulting an immigration lawyer can help you understand your options better.
  • Impact on Future Applications : Note that a visa refusal could potentially affect future visa applications, not only to the UK but also to other countries.

What To Do Upon Landing in the UK

Once you land in the UK, there are some essential steps and checks you must go through:

  • Pass Through Immigration Control : You’ll be asked to show your passport and visa. Keep them handy.
  • Declaration : You may have to declare certain items at customs. Know the regulations beforehand.
  • Local SIM Card : Consider buying a local SIM card for easy communication.
  • Transport : Be aware of your transport options from the airport to your accommodation.
  • Register with Local Authorities : Some travelers might be required to register their arrival with the local police within seven days.

Can I Switch from a Tourist Visa to a Work Visa While in the UK?

As of 2024, individuals holding a UK Tourist Visa from India cannot usually switch to a work visa while still in the UK.

The UK Tourist Visa is specifically designated for tourism, visiting family/friends, or short-term business visits and does not provide a pathway to switch to a work visa category from within the UK.

To apply for a UK work visa, you typically need to return to India and apply from there, meeting all the necessary requirements for the work visa category.

Can I Work in the UK on a Tourist Visa?

No, you are not permitted to work in the UK on a Tourist Visa. This includes both paid and unpaid employment.

The UK Tourist Visa is strictly for leisure, tourism, or short-term non-work related activities. Working while on a tourist visa is considered a breach of visa conditions and could lead to severe consequences, including deportation and a ban on future travel to the UK.

If you wish to work in the UK, you must apply for the appropriate work visa category.

How Will UK Visa Changes Impact Indians? Former Students Weigh In

The minimum income required to bring dependents on a work visa has jumped from 18,600 pounds a year to 29,000 pounds..

Indians represent a significant portion of non-EU immigration into the UK.

As part of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's plan to control immigration numbers, the UK government on Thursday implemented an increase in the minimum income threshold required to sponsor a family member's visa in the country as a 'dependent'.

The move, which follows recent changes in the United Kingdom's Work, Study and Graduate Route (post-study work) visas, has reignited apprehensions within the Indian diaspora because of tightening eligibility conditions and increased restrictions. Indians constitute the largest group granted study and work visas in the United Kingdom and people who have studied in the country say it is bound to have an adverse impact.

Sanam Arora, founder and chairperson of the National Indian Students and Alumni Union (NISAU) UK, said, "The Graduate visa is a key requirement of Indian students, and a critical offer of the UK's international higher education system."

On the social implications of dependents being snubbed, Anahita Masters, an Alumni of the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), said, "Restrictions on post-graduate research students bringing dependents is a huge setback to all students with dependents, particularly women."

The minimum income required to bring dependents on a work visa jumped from 18,600 pounds (approximately Rs 19 lakh) a year to 29,000 pounds (approximately Rs 30 lakh, a 55 per cent rise), with a subsequent increase to 38,700 pounds (approximately Rs 40 lakh) planned for early next year. Moreover, social care workers are not allowed to bring any dependents, irrespective of income level.

This is the newest addition to a slew of restrictive visa rules. Starting January this year, people on student visas can no longer bring dependents to the UK. Additionally, the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) has been commissioned to review the Graduate route visa, which allows international students to stay in the UK for 2 years after graduating to find employment without requiring sponsorship. MAC is tasked with finding if the visa has any significant purpose, suggesting necessary changes, and potentially voting to discontinue it.

Immigration statistics in 2023 reflected that more than 3 lakh Indians received Work visas (skilled and seasoned workers). The number was 61% higher than in the previous year. Meanwhile, over 1.2 lakh received Student visas, making up 11.6% of all international students in the UK.

On the threat of the Graduate route visa being shelved, Ms Arora said, "Without the Graduate route, university finances may collapse. The impact of this will be felt not just by international students but also by students from the UK, given that domestic students and the world-class research that happens in the country's universities are heavily cross-subsidised by international students."

Another aspect is the possible disadvantage faced by sole breadwinners and Indian women, especially mothers. Sharing her experience, Ms Masters said she could study at the LSE because the dependent clause was in place.

"Studying at the LSE as a mature student and a mother of a 3-year-old would not have been possible for me had it not been for the dependent clause. The change to remove this clause for Master's level students is a huge setback to all students with dependents, particularly women, as young children cannot be expected to live apart from their mothers for a year or more," she said.

Entry requirements

This advice reflects the UK Government’s understanding of current rules for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK, for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in India set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the  High Commission of India in London or another Indian consulate in the UK .

COVID-19 rules

There are no COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements for travellers entering India.

Passport validity requirements

Make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry into India.

Your passport must also: - have 2 blank pages for your visa

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Visa requirements

Apply for the right type of visa for the purpose of your travel.

You need a visa to travel to India unless you are an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholder.

India has a number of visa categories. Make sure you get the right visa for the purpose and duration of your travel.

Penalties for having the wrong visa can include refusal of entry or deportation. This may also include not being allowed to enter India in the future.

For latest information on Indian visas and immigration requirements, see the  e-FRRO online portal (part of the Indian Foreigners Registration Office), the  Bureau of Indian Immigration website  and  Indian Ministry of External Affairs website .

Applying for a visa or e-visa

Find out how to apply for a visa from the Indian Bureau of Immigration Depending on your requirements you may be able to apply for:

  • regular (paper) visa
  • e-visa (make sure to check the website’s ‘FAQs’ for restrictions on airports and seaports of entry)

Check your eligibility and any restrictions before you apply and allow plenty of time for your application to be processed.

More information is available from the website of High Commission of India in London .

Applicants of Pakistani origin

If you are of Pakistani origin, a British-Pakistan dual national, or holding a National Identity Card for overseas Pakistanis (NICOP), the visa processing time will be substantially longer than other visa applications. More information is available from the High Commission of India in London .

If you are a British-Pakistan dual national, you must apply for an Indian visa on your Pakistani passport. If you have renounced your Pakistani nationality or cancelled your Pakistani passport, you will need to submit documentary proof of this.

Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) cardholders

If you hold a valid Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) card, you can use this, along with your valid British passport to visit India. You do not need a visa. If you have a Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) card, you will need to convert it to an OCI card. More information is available from the  High Commission of India in London  and the  Indian Bureau of Immigration .

Arrival, registration, and extensions

If you plan to stay in India for more than 180 days and do not hold an OCI card, register within 14 days of arrival with the Foreigner Regional Registration Office (FRRO) . You could be denied permission to leave if you do not do this. Check if you are required to  register your arrival .

Overstaying in India on a visa is an offence. Make sure you leave the country before your visa expires or get an official extension if needed. More information is available on the Indian Bureau of Immigration website.

If you’re hospitalised

If you or someone you’re travelling with has a short-term Tourist Visa and is hospitalised, you may be able to extend or ‘convert’ to a Medical Visa .

Exit requirements

You will pass through immigration as you depart India. Officials will check when you entered the country. If you do not have an entry stamp, for example if you have a newly issued passport, you will need to apply for special exit visa before you travel. This must be done online and can take between five and fifteen working days for straightforward applications. Factor this into your timeframe to leave India when you are booking flights. For further information see the  e-FRRO online portal (part of the Indian Foreigners Registration Office).

Vaccination requirements (other than COVID-19)

At least 8 weeks before your trip, check the vaccinations and vaccination certificates you may need on TravelHealthPro (from the UK’s National Travel Health Network and Centre).

Depending on your circumstances, these may include:

  • yellow fever

The Indian Ministry of Health and Family Welfare also provides  vaccination guidance and data .

Accommodation

By law, hotels, hostels and other accommodation providers must register the stay of foreign guests with the Foreigners’ Regional Registration Office (FRRO) using a “C Form”.  Please ask your accommodation provider to ensure they have done so.

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods that can be brought into and taken out of India . You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Satellite phones and listening devices

It is illegal to possess and operate satellite phones in India without a licence. British nationals have been arrested for bringing them into the country without prior permission. You can contact the Indian Department of Telecommunication to request a licence .

You may also need prior permission from the Indian authorities to bring equipment like listening or recording devices, radio transmitters, powerful cameras, or binoculars into India. You can ask the High Commission of India in London for advice.

Taking money into India

There are restrictions on bringing Indian rupees into India.

Visitors, including tourists, must not bring any amount of Indian currency into the country. If you’re resident in India, you can bring up to 25,000 rupees into the country.

If you’re visiting India, you can bring cash, travellers’ cheques (in pounds sterling or another foreign currency) or a bank card with you and exchange or withdraw rupees once in India.

You must declare any amount above 5,000 US dollars in notes, or 10,000 US dollars in notes and travellers’ cheques combined.
