Watch the Rolling Stones Wrap Up 2019 Tour With Rain-Drenched ‘Gimme Shelter’

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

The Rolling Stones managed to stay dry through through most of their tour-closing show at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium Friday evening, even as Hurricane Dorian continued to gain strength in the Atlantic. But when the band came out for the encore of “Gimme Shelter” and Mick Jagger sang the opening lines “A storm is threat’ning/My very life today,” the clouds opened up as if on cue and rain began pouring down in sheets. As evidenced in video from the gig, Jagger and backup singer Sasha Allen were pros and blazed through the song as if nothing was happening.

The Miami concert was originally supposed to open up the tour on April 20th, but Mick Jagger’s heart surgery forced a postponement of every show until later in the summer. Miami ultimately became the final stop with a show booked for August 31st, but once it became clear that Hurricane Dorian was barreling towards Florida they moved it forward one day with just about 24 hours notice.

The last minute shift seemed to have little impact on attendance as nearly every seat appeared to be full Friday night, even though a little rainstorm delayed the start about an hour. Appropriately enough, they opened up with “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” (“I was born in a cross-fire hurricane/And I howled at the maw in the driving rain”), but they were fortunate that the rain held off until “Gimme Shelter” 17 songs later. Nobody would have complained if that song ended the night, but they still powered through an extended “Satisfaction” in the pouring rain to wrap up the night and the tour.

The Rolling Stones ’ future plans are unclear at the moment, but Jagger did tell the crowd “See you next time!” before walking offstage. They have toured every single year since ending their extended hiatus in 2012, and there’s no reason to think next year will be any different. After all, this is a band that doesn’t even let an impending category 4 hurricane stop them.

Rolling Stones Announce Rescheduled Tour Dates

Just a day after Mick Jagger posted a video clip of himself dancing strenuously , the Rolling Stones have announced rescheduled dates for their “No Filter” North American tour, which was postponed after the singer required heart surgery . All of the postponed shows have been rescheduled.

The “No Filter” will now kick off — just two months later than originally planned — in Chicago with two shows, June 21 and June 25, then head to Ontario on June 29, followed by dates in Washington DC, Foxboro, East Rutherford, Philadelphia, Houston, Jacksonville, New Orleans, Denver, Seattle, Santa Clara, Pasadena and Glendale, and rounding up in Miami on August 31. The tour’s three opening dates were the closing dates of the original tour itinerary.

The announcement says the group is “delighted” to announce the dates, and that “Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and Ronnie Wood can’t wait to get back out on the road again bringing the ‘No Filter’ show for the very first time to American and Canadian fans.”

Tour promoters Concerts West/ AEG Presents “wish to thank the Rolling Stones ticketholders for their patience in waiting for the new 2019 dates to be announced today.”  (See dates cities and venues below).

Tickets sold for the original date will be honored, fans do not need to exchange their tickets. Those who cannot attend the rescheduled date can refund their tickets by accessing their Ticketmaster account. For transferred tickets, the refund will go to the fan who originally bought the tickets, once they have been transferred back. Newly added New Orleans date at Mercedes-Benz Superdome will go on sale Friday, May 31 at 10AM local time.

Ticketmaster offer online support through their website.

Charlie Watts’ Final Concert: Rolling Stones’ 2019 Tour

stones tour 2019

Charlie Watts’ final bow, Miami Gardens, Fla., Aug. 30, 2019

The 2019 edition of the Rolling Stones’ No Filter tour concluded in Miami Gardens, Fla., on Friday night (August 30), marked by off stage headlines as much as for its artistic and financial triumph. No one would have guessed that the concert would prove to be the last of Charlie Watts’ career.

It was fitting that the final performance of a tour that had been postponed for two months due to the shocking March 30 announcement of Mick Jagger’s heart valve procedure, came a day earlier than expected. On Thursday, the Stones announced that the concert, scheduled for August 31, was being moved up one day due to a crossfire hurricane named Dorian, a Category 4 storm described as extremely dangerous that was heading for Florida. Despite the precautions taken, it still rained heavily during the performance.

It was the latest headline in a series of unexpected events that impacted the 2019 tour, none more so than the stunning news about Jagger’s health that broke on March 30, just three weeks before the tour was set to begin.

Incredibly, perhaps six weeks after his procedure, Jagger shared an awe-inspiring clip of him dancing on May 15, as he began to get back in shape for the rigors of the tour.

pic.twitter.com/nx5JFB2ZuJ — Mick Jagger (@MickJagger) May 15, 2019

When the 2019 tour was originally announced, way back on November 19, 2018, the Miami concert was supposed to be the first date on April 20. Fans who had purchased tickets months earlier had to wait for Jagger, 75, to sufficiently recover. And he did, in magnificent fashion, shimmying across the stage and the full length of the catwalk that was set up at each venue.

At Hard Rock Stadium, the Stones gave a 19-song performance with a setlist virtually identical to the rest of the tour, featuring such classic rock favorites as “Jumpin’ Jack Flash,” “Honky Tonk Women,” “Miss You,” “Brown Sugar” and “Gimme Shelter.”

Watch  “Tumbling Dice” from the final concert

The 2019 edition of the Stones’ “No Filter” tour, sponsored by the Alliance For Lifetime Income , consisted of just 17 concerts, spread over a generous two-and-a-half months. Jagger, Keith Richards, Watts and Ronnie Wood were each well into their 70s; the schedule allowed them to perform at their peak.

The final concert’s fan’s choice was a 1966 favorite.

For this tour, the Stones performed two acoustic numbers with the core four on the catwalk.

Watch them perform “Sweet Virginia”

As the rest of the band begin “Sympathy For the Devil,” the Stones make a quick costume change and return to the main stage.

Pollstar , the trade publication that covers the business of live events worldwide, reported that the first 10 shows of the 2019 run talled $108.3 in sales with a ticket tally of 474,397. The No Filter tour began in Europe on September 9, 2017, and resumed in 2018. The tour earned $416 million, making it one of the ten biggest of all time.

Watch the main set’s final number

During “Gimme Shelter,” the evening’s first of two encores, Hurricane Dorian made its presence known, as the Stones performed in the rain.

Fittingly, the evening closed with “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.” Watts was just 23 years old when he and the Stones recorded it. It proved to be his final live performance.

The tour,  originally scheduled  to run from mid-April through the end of June, was  postponed  in late March when  Mick Jagger  was forced to undergo a surgical procedure to place a stent in his heart. The postponement of the tour forced the band to cancel their highly-anticipated headlining slot at this year’s  New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival .

Now that Jagger is  healed up and ready to rock , the band revealed their revised tour plans, which will see them stop in each of the cities originally included on the tour—including a newly-added show at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome  in New Orleans on July 14th to make up for the missed Jazz Fest performance.

See a full list of the Rolling Stones’ North American tour dates below, as well as the special guests that will be joining the band throughout their lengthy tour.

The Rolling Stones 2019 tour: Bigger, better video screens bring Mick & Keith up close

stones tour 2019

WASHINGTON – The Great Wall of Mick is making its way across across America.

The Rolling Stones' No Filter tour  – the first expansive U.S. swing in at least four years –is traversing the country this summer. Each time the rocking septuagenarians have conducted an extensive tour, fans have wondered whether that would be the last time .

But the Stones have constantly played some live shows across the globe each year since then, including hitting  Desert Trip in California in 2016.

The stage setup for this tour, used in the No Filter shows last year in the U.K. and Europe, represents a technological advance that puts more focus on the Stones themselves, says Dale Skjerseth, the tour's production director.

July Fourth fireworks: 7 tips for taking great photos on your smartphone

The Stars and Stripes: Here are the 27 different US flags and their histories

In the past, Stones' tours have involved majestic stage designs such as the Voodoo Lounge  (1994-1995) and Steel Wheels (1989-1990) tours. And the band has incorporated large props including giant dragons, a blowup doll and, perhaps most famously,  a giant inflatable male sex organ .

But this new stage design is streamlined with four six-story-tall LED video screens, each encompassing about 1.5 million pixels delivering super high-def footage of the band.

"The concept is them and their music," Skjerseth said. "The quality of the video is the highest we can get at this point with this large of scale. After that, there’s a point you don’t want to go because it really shows items on peoples’ faces you don’t want to see."

Skjerseth, who has worked on Stones tours since 1994, took time to talk about the tour here prior to the band's concert at FedEx Field on July 3. The tour has 40 trucks that transport two sets of the massive, 70-foot steel structures that hold the video displays from venue to venue.

Each tour stop requires four days of setup – another steel apparatus was in Foxboro, Mass. for the next concert on the itinerary (Sunday, July 7). The setup in Washington was sent to New Orleans for a July 14 concert after it was taken down Thursday.

Another 25 trucks transport production equipment, including the video operation, which is housed under the stage. Overall, about 300 people –150 local workers and 150 who travel with the tour – help with the production, Skjerseth says.

The tour  opened June 21 in Chicago  after it was postponed for about two months when frontman Mick Jagger had heart valve replacement surgery .

Jagger has been super active and animated in the first shows on the tour . The stage includes a 104-foot runway that juts into the center of the stadium for the lead singer to scamper on.

The band seems rejuvenated, Skjerseth says. "I think it’s gone to that level with them coming back after Mick's surgery (that) 'We are really lucky to be all alive and well and happy.' They all have always taken into account their fitness and their mindset and their drive for the show," he said. "But it's actually taken another step up to another level of being better. You wouldn’t notice Mick had (the heart operation). We all had to shift gears and slow down for a minute, but now we are in the groove."

The Rolling Stones in Seattle WA USA 2019

stones tour 2019

Seattle in the north west US state of Washington was the next stop on The Rolling Stones No Filter US Tour 2019, following the show in Denver Colorado. I added a day with a stopover in Portland Oregon, then took the train the next day to Seattle. One day in Portland OR and two days in Seattle WA made many memories and experiences, which would have taken a long time to experience in other ways than actually being there.

From Denver Colorado until Glendale/Phoenix Arizona, the No Filter US Tour 2019 is moving on to a new city and a new show every four days. I stayed an extra day in Denver, so I did only have three days for the Portland/Seatle travel. At this stage of the travel, I will be changing hotels 3-4 times per week, a bit stressful, but that is be most economical way of doing a tour travel of 77 days this summer.

I have been doing business with a company in Portland Oregon for 23 years now, since I first met them as a small start-up company at the Internet World conference and exhibition in San Jose CA in 1996 . Since then I have returned to Portland OR several times for work, so it was natural for me to do a day in Portland OR on this travel, for business. The small startup-company of some four people I met in 1996, grew to more than four hundred employees few years later, and were world leading in their trade for many years. I was lucky to be part of that journey during the next twenty plus years.

During Jan/Feb 1998 I had three intercontinental flights from Norway to America in approx six weeks, for Stones shows. One of these were for the two shows at the Rose Garden in Portland, where The Rolling Stones were testing out a new arena stage concept, a great experience with 360 degrees seating. For many Portland Oregon is not a city visited that often, but for me Portland is very special. Also, during those few weeks of Jan/Feb 1998, there were several cancellations, Mick got laryngitis, and there were an ice storm in Montreal, so those days came back to my mind as I flew into Portland Oregon from Denver.

Sitting on the airport train into the downtown Portland area, I noticed a small tent camp under the highway. Then more tents, small camps of a few tents, appeared other places. Then I arrived to my hotel eventually, and checked into the very special Canopy Hilton, an experience in itself, as that was my first time in a Canopy hotel. Canopy by Hilton hotels have a local feel, typically built and designed locally, in response to customer testing. Employees are called “enthusiasts”, and beds have a “canopy” created by a grey headboard that reaches to the ceiling and overhangs. The first Canopy by Hilton hotel opened in Reykjavík, Iceland, in July 2016. These days most of the Canopy hotels are in the US. I loved the hotel, the room, the restaurant, the staff, and if I get the chance another time, may be I will stay at another Canopy.

I walked out of my Portland hotel for dinner during the evening. The city had changed a lot since last time I was visiting a few years back. There were many people living in the streets, some areas downtown there were entire blocks of sidewalks taken over by the homeless. I have seen homeless people in Denver, also other cities, but the number of people living in the streets were unusually high in Portland. Later on I took a closer look at the situation, going online, and studies told me it was a complicated matter. Anyone who wonder how to handle such a situation, should read the report What Don’t We Understand About Homelessness in Portland? I got a deeper understanding on the subject, and realized how important the social care network we have at home is in order to help people living a life with a minimum of respect and dignity.

Next day it was business meeting downtown Portland, then in the afternoon I was on a 3.5 hours train ride from Portland OR to Seattle WA. It was a great ride, and I got to see lakes, rivers, Mount Hood in Portland, Mount Rainier in Seattle, houses, people, local living, all the things you miss when you fly or drive on the highway. I wanted to do quite a bit of train rides on this tour, to see more, but when the new dates were announced, I realized train would be very complicated, with all the long travels.

Seattle was the most expensive city on my entire tour planning. I worked for weeks to find cheaper accomodation, still with easy access to and from the show. Even if I booked before the dates were announced, the hotel closest to the venue in Seattle would have cost me $500 per night. Two nights at one thousand dollars were out of my budget, so I canceled that hotel, whern I finally found a way of transportation, and moved into Holiday Inn Express at the SeaTac Airport. From there it was an easy half hour ride by the light train to Seattle downtown, and the venue. I just needed to be fast out of the venue after the show, so that I did not end up in a large jam packed queue for the light train.

Show day I did my Seattle tourist time. I had to have a meal by the water front, visit the Stones hotel, see the Space Needle, meet friends, and also try to see a bit more of Seattle. I took the light train to the University of Washington, walked by the large Husky Stadium, then found out there was a great large lake there, I was at Husky Harbor by Lake Washington. With boats, sea birds, water lilys and ferries, it almost felt like I was back home to Norway. Then as time went by, it was getting close to show time, and I had to move on to the stadium.

CenturyLink Field in Seattle is one of the many new and modern stadiums in USA. I remember being at the Kingdome for the Stones here in 1994, on a travel where that was the last show in USA, before the two final shows in Vancouver Canada. The Kingdome was taken down in 2000, by then The Rolling Stones had been playing that old stadium during three tours. The new CenturyLink Field was built on the same place, and The Rolling Stones played here in 2006 when the venue was called Qwest Field. After that, the fans in Seattle had to wait quite a bit for more Stones shows. But now, at this moment, we were all ready for The Rolling Stones to rock Seattle!
