Bali-Based Travel Pro Alexandra Saper Gives Us The Ultimate Guide To Bali, Indonesia

Chloe Caldwell

There’s no place like Bali, Indonesia for a rejuvenating travel experience that combines nature, delicious food , adventure, and a carefree, beachside atmosphere . From the incredible jungle views to white sand beaches to luxury accommodations to the surf, Bali truly has something for everyone — no wonder it’s so insanely popular with young expats . To learn more about what the Indonesian island has to offer for both high-end vacationers and rugged explorers, we spoke with Bali-based travel blogger and photographer Alexandra Saper .

Known as “ The Wayfaress ,” Saper left her corporate job as a lawyer behind to buy a one-way ticket to Bali, where she’s lived since 2018. As a travel expert who’s spent the past few years learning the ins and outs of her new home, Saper is the perfect person to give us the inside scoop on all things Bali and she’s sharing her foolproof guide on the absolute best places to stay, play, eat, and drink in Bali below.

PART I — WHERE TO STAY

Mandapa reserve.

Bali Travel Guide

Ubud is home to one of only five Ritz-Carlton Reserve hotels in the entire world… and it seriously lives up to the hype. The Mandapa , which means “temple” in Sanskrit, is a sacred oasis of its own (and even has two Balinese temples located on the property). Bali’s longest river, the Ayung River, winds around the edge of the property to ensure that no matter where you go at Mandapa, you’ll be able to hear a constant soundtrack of rushing water in the background. The Riverfront Villas are breathtaking, each with a massive private infinity pool and a standalone library/study perched against the jungle cliff with, of course, the river right below you.

Mandapa’s main restaurants, Sawah Terrace and Kubu Restaurant, feature delicious Indonesian-inspired and fine-dining Mediterranean cuisine (respectively), and Ambar — the hotel’s iconic “hanging” jungle bar — serves up some of the best craft cocktails in the area. And added benefits like a sauna/steam room, luxurious spa, private butler service, and morning yoga will make it hard to ever want to leave — although if you do, you’re just a few minutes outside of Ubud center.

Munduk Cabins

Bali Travel Guide

Up in the misty mountains of North Bali, you’ll find Munduk Cabins tucked away amongst the trees… sort of in the middle of nowhere. There are six luxury, modern minimalist cabins to choose from, all with balconies overlooking lush jungle views. There is also an infinity pool and jacuzzi, along with a fire pit surrounded by cozy seating… perfect for roasting marshmallows or sipping wine at the end of a day exploring the nearby waterfalls, temples, and hiking trails. The perfect place to unplug, unwind, and get away from the bustle without sacrificing an ounce of comfort and luxury.

Bali Travel Guide

This is one of the most unique places to stay in Bali. At Hideout in East Bali’s Sidemen Village, you can choose from seven different bamboo homes, each as Instagrammable as the next. They all have their own special features, like outdoor bathtubs, infinity pools, netted hammock beds, a river to swim in right outside the front door, and so on. No matter which you choose, you’ll be blown away by the bamboo architecture… not to mention the cute animals on-site that will keep you company during your stay.

PART II — WHERE TO PLAY

Hike mount batur at sunrise.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Alexandra Saper | Bali&Travel (@thewayfaress)

Hiking in the dark up one of Bali’s active volcanoes (don’t worry, it hasn’t erupted in over 20 years) to watch the vibrant sunrise over Mount Agung (Bali’s other, much more volatile active volcano) is an experience you can’t miss. Booking with a local guide who speaks English is an amazing way to learn about the local culture and what life is like living in this area. They’ll pick you up around 2 or 3 a.m., drive you to the base of the hike, and then you’ll make your way up the mountain for about an hour before reaching the top. The sunrises can be incredible, and you’ll be joined by a few dozen monkeys as well.

You can find more information on this hike on my blog here .

Bingin Beach in Uluwatu

The walk down the cliff is a bit of a workout (we call it the “Bingin Booty” for a reason) but it’s well worth it. The white sand beach sits against a cliffside dotted with little warungs (local cafes), coconut stands, and surf shacks, looking onto one of the best waves in Bali. The maze of white buildings dotting the cliffside gives it a “Santorini of Bali” feel. It’s such a beautiful spot to spend the day, grab a coconut and a bite at Kelly’s Warung or one of the fresh fish BBQs organized on the beach in the evenings, and watch the incredible Bingin sunset.

Banyumala Waterfall

Of all Bali’s waterfalls, this is one of my favorites because it’s not too challenging a hike. It does take a bit of effort to get to, so wear good shoes, bring water, and plan for a 30 to 40-minute walk down. This waterfall is one of the biggest ones in Bali, called Banyumala Twin Falls — named for its two main streams of water pouring down and trickling into countless little streams against the lush wall of green.

There’s a spacious area in front to put out a blanket, lay in the sun, and have a picnic, and the waterfall’s pool is especially large — great for a swim.

PART III — WHERE TO EAT & DRINK

Yuki (canggu).

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Y U K I (@yukibali_)

Yuki is the new kid on the block but quickly becoming a neighborhood favorite. An open-air dining space serving Japanese dishes and cocktails with a twist — like crispy truffle tuna sushi rolls and wasabi-infused martinis. The decor is beautiful, without taking away from the beach and waves literally right across the street. It’s as casual or dressy as you want it to be, but expect an amazing, fine-dining-quality meal and fun vibes.

Apéritif (Ubud)

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Apéritif Restaurant & Bar (@aperitifbali)

For a fine-dining experience, [ Apéritif is a ] gorgeous colonial Dutch-style restaurant and roaring 20s-inspired cocktail bar you can’t miss. Reserve a spot for their degustation menu, serving an eclectic selection of dishes incorporating both modern flavors and local Indonesian ingredients. Plus, it looks out on the lush Ubud jungle which is spectacular.

Be sure to stay for after-dinner cocktails in their speakeasy!

Il Solatto (Uluwatu)

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Il Salotto Bali (@ilsalotto.bali)

[ Il Solatto is] a bit of a lesser-known gem. This Italian resto is one of my favorite spots for dinner and drinks in the Bukit Peninsula. They have a cool urban-style cocktail bar with amazing drinks, and a pretty outdoor garden in the back with sofas, bistro lights, and a buzzing scene most nights.

The menu features a lot of delicious seafood options, but I definitely recommend the truffle tuna tartare pasta, the burger, and the vegan sandwich. They have a DJ some nights of the week, so plan accordingly depending on whether or not you want that party vibe!

Today: Top 10 most luxurious resorts in Bali (Indonesia)

Located between Java and Lombok, the Indonesian island of Bali – often called the  Island of the Gods – is a world-acclaimed island paradise for a reason, although its popularity has taken its toll in certain areas. The varied volcanic landscape of rugged coastlines, sandy beaches, and verdant rice terraces provides a picturesque backdrop to Bali’s colorful, deeply spiritual and unique culture. Bali’s five-star resorts rank amongst the best hotels in the world, with most of them located in Nusa Dua, Seminyak and Ubud. Ubud’s hotels cater to those who prefer spas and cultural pursuits, while surfing and other beach activities can be found at the sophisticated beachfront communities of Nusa Dua and Seminyak. Here’s my selection of the 10 best luxury hotels & resorts in Bali.

There is more info below the slide show. Think I missed one? Share your favorite Bali resort in the  comments section , or take my  poll  below!

10. JUMANA BALI UNGASAN RESORT, ULUWATU

Jumana Bali Ungasan – previously a Banyan Tree property – sits 70 m (230 ft) above sea level on the southern tip of Bali, close to the famed Uluwatu Temple, overlooking a gold sand beach and the blue waters of the Indian Ocean. Most of the resort’s 73 palatial villas enjoy a view of the sea and they all come with a plunge pool, outdoor hot tube, and plenty of retractable floor-to-ceiling glass, instantly turning bedrooms into open-air cabanas. Traditional Balinese accents and modern Asian decorations are fused throughout the interiors, and occasional carvings or statuettes tweak the well-honed Banyan Tree aesthetic. The property features several excellent dining venues (the in-villa barbecue prepared by a personal chef is not to be missed) and a world-class spa.

  • Hotel website : Jumana Bali Ungasan Resort
  • Other accolades : Jumana Bali Ungasan features in my top 10 list of my favorite Banyan Tree hotels in the world .

9. AMANDARI, UBUD

Inspired by a traditional village, Amandari is framed by jungle and rice terraces in Bali’s cultural heartland. Alang-alang-thatched houses – some with pools, all with private tropical gardens – cosset guests under bamboo ceilings, their suites elegantly decorated with teak and coconut-wood. The grounds of Aman’s Ubud outpost are both sacred and essential to local families: children attend dance classes here, and religious processions pass through regularly, leading down the steps that spill below Amandari to a 7th-century stone tiger – a motif repeated throughout the property. Guests can follow the road out of the village to hike or bike the emerald-green landscape; or head further afield for artisan villages, hidden temples, and the palaces and boutiques of Ubud.

  • Other accolades : Amandari also features in my top 10 list of the best luxury hotels in Ubud .

8. BVLGARI RESORT BALI, ULUWATU

The Bvlgari Resort Bali, at the time the second hotel opening by the prestigious Bvlgari group, is located on top of a 150 m (450 ft) high, jaw-dropping cliff cascading down towards the Indian Ocean. A pristine private beach, suitable for long walks along the oceanfront and featuring a private beach club, is reached via an inclined elevator. The 59 individual villas, freestanding and private, all include an open-air pavilion, terrace and private plunge pool, with the ones on the first row enjoying spectacular ocean views. In all villas, every natural element is polished to a shine: Indonesian wood floors glow, natural lava walls are neatly bricked, and floor-to-ceiling glass walls reveal manicured tropical plants.

4. FOUR SEASONS RESORT BALI AT SAYAN, UBUD

Only a ten-minute drive from the stylish boutiques, artist ateliers and atmospheric eateries of boho-chic Ubud, Four Seasons Sayan is an inspiring base from which to explore Bali’s cultural heart or to retreat into nature’s meditative embrace. 3. MANDAPA, A RITZ-CARLTON RESERVE, UBUD

Deriving its name from the Sanskrit word for “temple,” Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, stands as a tropical shrine dedicated to the self. Fronting the Ayung River near the Ubud jungle, the hotel replicates a traditional Balinese village, complete with working rice paddies. Showcasing the architecture and craftsmanship of the area, each of the 60 luxury suites and villas features a private outdoor space (some of them with pools) with views of the river or surrounding scenery. Four restaurants serve health-conscious cuisine sourced from the organic garden, although you can also arrange a romantic dinner overlooking the river or rice terrace. The spa offers a variety of programs focused on physical and spiritual well-being.

Here, you can steep yourself in local island culture, unwind with holistic spa treatments and enjoy a wide range of dining options, including the beachfront Sundara restaurant. More sensory delights await at open-air Taman Wantilan restaurant, where theatre-style dining is presented by a brigade of specialty chefs at nine culinary exhibitions or show kitchens.

1. AMANKILA

Mount Agung provides a dramatic backdrop for Amankila (peaceful hill), a secluded seaside resort overlooking the Lombok Strait and managed by Aman, one of the world’s most exclusive hotel brands . The 34 free-standing thatched-roof suites offer exceptional views from their hillside locations, and are connected to the resort’s facilities by raised walkways. Guests can relax around the signature three-tiered pool or at the beach club on Amankila’s beach, with its silverblack sands and turquoise waters. What separates Amankila from other luxury Bali hotels is that it is situated in Karangasem, one of Bali’s most traditional regencies, offering easy access to untouched rural countryside, local crafts and the region’s royal past.

  • Hotel website :  Amankila
  • Other accolades : Amankila also features in my top 10 lists of the world’s most beautiful hotel pools  and the best luxury hotels in Indonesia .

Great list. I would definitely recommend these hotels to my guests.

yea,Its realy good but I can say that http://hiddenvalleyresortbali.com/ is one of the best resorts in Bali for family holiday and tranquility. Nice staff and pleasant clean rooms. Great food, but couldn’t get used to the spicy taste. All in all it was great!

Thanks for Sharing the list of top resorts in Bali. this list is really very helpful for new visitors.

We have stayed at a couple of the hotel’s you have listed however I believe Mandapa Ritz Carlton Reserve property in Ubud deserves to be on this list. It’s a relatively new hotel and spectacular. We ate at Kabu (their fine dining restaurant) last night which was just incredible too. We travel with our 3 and 4 year old and Mandapa Camp for the children was pretty special too! Love to hear your thoughts on this hotel!

Thank you for your comment. The Mandapa Ritz Carlton Reserve opened after this list was published. I will publish a new Bali top 10 list in a couple of months. Enjoy your holidays in the ‘Island of Gods’!

Not a mention of one hotel in Ubud is strange.

COMO Shambhala Estate is in the Ubud area 🙂

It’s hard to rate them as there are different points to each resort (e.g. a resort in Seminyak/Jimbaran serves a very different purpose to Ubud etc).

However, some key ones missing in the top 10: – The Legian – Chedi Club – Soori Bali – Viceroy Bali

I really miss the Viceroy Bali among the very first positions of the top 10 list.

You forgot to include Mandapa in your poll.

Never mind. I now see Mandapa in your list of hotels in the poll. I don’t know why this resort doesn’t get more love. The villas are amazing and well-priced.

The Oberoi should definitely be on here. The list is just his opinion on what the best is and I respect his opinion. However, I do think the best hotel in Bali is Bvlgari. It’s also clear that most people agree that Bvlgari is the best based on the poll results. My personal top 3 is Bvlgari, Four Seasons Jimbaran and Amankila.

Agreed, Oberoi should definitely be on here

Legian is amazing and belongs in your top 10, is superior to St. Regis except that beach isn’t as good. St. Regis is much more generic.

Was underwhelmed by Amandari, the setting and food is wonderful but the service and rooms were very basic for the price. Some rooms have pools but are only semi-private.

One concern I have about Mandapa is that during the day all the rafters going by yelling and screaming make it a less serene environment.

I have stayed at the Oberoi Bali and it is a fantastic resort. Highly surprised it did not make it on here!

COMO Shambhala Estate in Ubud should have been in the top 10 list. It is the only Shambhala property by COMO in the entire world and it halpens to be my favourite of theirs! They even have two other properties in Bali: COMO Uma Ubud and the newly opened COMO Uma Canggu.

Otherwise, I am patiently waiting for Rosewood Tanah Lot, Waldorf Astoria Pandawa Beach, Waldorf Astoria Ubud and The Langham Pecatu. Truly some exciting times ahead for the hospitality industry in Bali!

How is Six Senses in Uluwatu? Have you already stayed there? Very curious about it but since it’s so new not sure how it is! Thanks!

I have Yet to stay at any of these Top 10 Resorts as they are not within my Budget!! Though I would love to experience such Luxury perhaps one day!! At these Luxury Resort/Resident Prices it would take me a very very long time to save up!! One can only dream!!!! Life all about the $$$$$$$$ Sadly enough!!

My top 10: 1. COMO Shambhala Estate 2. Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve 3. Alila Villas Uluwatu 4. The Mulia – Nusa Dua 5. Viceroy Bali Hotel 6. The Villas at AYANA Resort, BALI 7. (tie) Amandari 8. (tie) Banyan Tree Ungasan 9. AYANA Resort & Spa, BALI (non-villas) 10. Fairmont Sanur Beach Bali

And as 7. and 8. are tie, so 11. is Samabe Bali Suites & Villas.

I think not all those who voted have been to all resorts. Therefore the most visited resorts get more votes. That’s why I have not voted. I’ve been to Bulgari and Banyan Tree and really loved Bulgari. Banyan was bit too touristy to me.

I just cancelled my booking at Anantara Uluwatu based on feedback here (already had misgivings), and considering Oberoi. Like the authenticity and beach – is there any negativity I should consider? I can’t find much on the internet. We love beach vacations and serenity, for reference. Thank you so much! I’m bookmarking this site for future!

Great reviews – well thought out and written, and your videos are the best. Thank you for your insights.

Capella isn’t even on the list? I’m surprised!

Oberoi was fab. Breakfasts to die for. Restaurant was wonderful for dinner. Staff could not do enough for you. The only thing that got to me was the heat, coming from chilly Uk, took some getting used to.

Def vote for Oberoi – can’t imagine why it would be left of a “top” list. Authentic, classic, over the top service, non-sterile cookie cutter rooms like some on this list. Would not stay anywhere else in Seminyak except Oberoi – going back for 20 nights soon.

I am big fan of you from the beginning 🙂 We have been even mailing few times I’m travelling with my family and visiting at least 10 places of your list every year As we have been in Bali – Sep 2022 I have picked up : Bulgari – Ocean Cliff villa Mandapa Rice Field villa ( I think nr 12) Amankila – infiniti pool villa

Truly, I have to say that Amankila was my first and last experience with AMAN brand. This villa was the most expensive of all resorts at Bali , there was no direct butler service and quality of everything was very poor . Mandapa food/service/quality of villa was like a high end one on Maldives – so far we visited Anantara Kihawah / Joali/ Veela .

Bali Travel Tips: 50+ Essential Dos & Don’ts for Bali & Indonesia in 2024!

' src=

I live in Bali , and I’ve been traveling the country of Indonesia for over 5 years! I have traveled all over the country, to every top tourist spot and most of Bali’s outer islands.

Here’s my local guide to the best Bali Travel Tips: 50 dos and don’ts you have to know before traveling to Bali & Indonesia in 2024!

✔️ Quick Guide – My Top 10 Bali Travel Tips

  • Be aware that the Visa On Arrival is for 30 days, not one month.
  • Use bug spray every day.
  • Don’t approach animals (especially dogs and monkeys!)
  • Download the Grab and WhatsApp apps.
  • Know you need an International Driver’s Permit for driving scooters.
  • Don’t forget you need an onward ticket to board your flight to Indonesia.
  • Buy a Telkomsel SIM card to have cell service.
  • Take out Indonesian Rupiah at airport ATMs when you arrive.
  • Know you can’t drink the tap water.
  • Don’t forget to explore Bali’s outer islands!

Bali Travel Tips: Health & Safety

An orange Grayl travel water purifier.

1. Don’t Drink The Tap Water!!!

This is always the first travel tip when visiting Bali, for a good reason!

You can’t drink the tap water in Bali – It’s not filtered. Sometimes when people drink tap water they get what is affectionately called “Bali Belly”, which is another term for travelers’ diarrhea.

You can avoid Bali Belly by only drinking bottled water, or if you want to be more environmentally friendly you can invest in a  travel water purifier.

I have been using my GRAYL travel purifier for three years now, and it’s perfect for Bali.

2. Don’t Forget Your Bug Spray

There are mosquito-borne illnesses in Bali, particularly Dengue Fever makes its way through the tourist population a lot.

To avoid Dengue, always keep your bug spray on you.

If you’re near areas of water like rice paddies (which are everywhere in Bali), or out at night the mosquitos are more aggressive.

You can buy a bug spray called “Soffel” in any convenience store in Bali for around $1 – It works great, just remember to wear it every day!

3. Do Get Your Travel Vaccines !

Even if you had all your routine vaccines as a child, you’ll likely need additional travel vaccines to go to Bali.

On my first trip to Indonesia, I received a Typhoid vaccine, a Tdap booster, and a Hepatitis A vaccine.

Recently I was playing with a puppy on the beach and wound up having to get a rabies vaccine in Bali as well!

Check in with the CDC guidelines and at your local travel clinic if you need any additional travel vaccines!

4. Don’t Approach Stray Animals

I know, they’re cute! But rabies is a very real problem in Indonesia and a lot of tourists have their trip cut short by being bitten by some animal or another.

I recently had to seek rabies post-exposure treatment after playing with a puppy on a Bali beach, it’s not fun!

5. Don’t Be Afraid Of Dogs Barking

If you walk anywhere in Bali, especially at night, you’ll probably be charged by a dog (or 10).

Every house has a dog and they’re just doing their job when they bark at passers-by.

Sometimes these “watchdogs” are cute little Pekingese puppies. So it’s a little hard to take them seriously but don’t be afraid if you’re chased by barking dogs.

Once you leave their owner’s territory they’ll leave you alone, so it’s best to just ignore them.

Monkeys at the Ubud Sacred Monkey Forest

6. Don’t Mess With The Monkeys

In Bali, there are these famous open-air animal sanctuaries called  “Monkey Forests”  where tourists can go and interact with the monkeys in their natural habitat.

Monkeys have a tendency toward being capricious and aggressive, and there’s a specific way you’re supposed to act around them.

Sometimes tourists come and they don’t know how to act around a monkey, and they wind up getting bit (which is where your travel insurance will come in handy!).

7. Do Stock Up On Whatever Prescription Medication You Need!

Did you know it’s actually illegal to mail prescription medication from the United States of America to other countries? It is!

When I was in college my dad tried to mail me glasses and even that got confiscated for being a prescription “medical item”.

Make sure to stock up on all prescription medication you need before you leave your home country.

If you try to have it mailed to you in Bali it will probably be confiscated by Indonesian Customs.

8. Do Call Scooter Taxis If You’re Not An Expert Rider

Everyone rides scooters in Bali instead of cars.

It’s not just because scooters are cheaper, scooters are the best way to get around Bali due to the crazy traffic and tiny roads.

You can get around Bali by car, but it’s usually  a lot  more difficult. There also isn’t usually a lot of parking access, so it’s just a lot easier to ride a scooter.

Most tourists come to Bali and think they need to rent and learn how to drive a scooter , but that’s not true! It’s much easier to just call a scooter taxi to get around.

A scooter taxi is when a guy drives up on a scooter and you just hop on the back! It’s a lot safer than driving yourself because they’re professionals and know how to navigate the  crazy  Balinese traffic.

You can call a scooter taxi from any major city in Bali by going to your Gojek app and choosing the “GoRide” option.

You can also use the Grab app for this, they’re basically the same app but I find Gojek to be a little more accurate.

Another bonus of taking a scooter taxi is that they’re incredibly cheap. If you only plan on going to one or two places per day, it’s probably more affordable to call a scooter taxi than to rent a scooter and drive yourself. 🛵 For scooter rentals in Bali, I use Bikago .

9. Don’t Forget To Wear Your Helmet,  Always , When Riding A Scooter

I see foreign tourists zipping around Bali on scooters in bikinis with no helmets and barely any clothes, it’s terrifying!!!

These scooters aren’t toys, and you want to be as safe as possible especially if you’re a novice rider.

It’s best to always wear a helmet, jacket, long pants, and close-toed shoes on a scooter. I don’t always wear full clothing while on a scooter, but I do always wear a helmet!

Katie’s Tips ✶

If you call a scooter taxi from Grab or Gojek they’ll have a spare helmet for passengers, but sometimes you have to ask for it.

10. Don’t Forget Travel Insurance!

Even if it’s not required for entry, I would always recommend signing up for travel insurance for a trip to Indonesia.

So much can go wrong, and it’s important to be covered.

I’ve been using Safety Wing over the past year because it caters to full-time traveling digital nomads like myself, but you can also use it for vacations and short trips.

It’s one of the cheapest travel health insurance out there. Safety Wing is completely no-frills and also no confusion.

You can buy a 1-month package starting at $42 and it covers most countries.

It’s just good to have peace of mind while traveling without having to think too hard!

Check the gov portal for what the entry requirements for Indonesia are before you plan your trip! The rules change frequently.

11. Don’t Drink Things With Ice If You’re Off-The-Beaten-Track

The only time I’ve ever gotten sick while traveling was from ice in a drink, and since then I’ve been very cautious.

Most places know to serve tourists only filtered water, but there’s less vigilant about ice for some reason.

Most drinks with ice in places catering to foreign tourists will be okay, but if you’re off the beaten track at a local warung it’s best to skip the ice.

Indonesians can handle the water better than foreigners can because they’re used to it.

13. Do Be Aware Of Earthquakes!

I was sitting at a cafe in Ubud  while I wrote this post  and all of a sudden the ground started shaking.

Since the cafe shares a building with a yoga studio, at first, I thought maybe there was an intense exercise class going on but then everyone started running outside. It was an earthquake!

It only lasted 15-20 seconds and then everyone went back inside after a few minutes. Later we learned it was a magnitude 5.8 earthquake!

The earthquake magnitude scale goes out of 10, so it was quite high – but not high enough to cause damage.

Bali is a high-risk area for earthquakes, so just be aware while you’re visiting.

Bali Travel Tips: Visas

14. don’t forget your visa.

Indonesia USED to allow visa-free entry to Americans, and lots of other nationalities, who want to visit.

Now, Indonesia only permits visa-free entry to ASEAN countries, all others need to buy. a Visa On Arrival at the airport.

You also have the option to extend your one-month VOA to two months.

To do this you need to buy a visa on arrival which is only good for one month, and then hire a visa service in Bali to extend that 1-month visa to two months.

You can buy your one-month Visa On Arrival (VOA) at the airport before customs.

It’s very easy, they don’t ask any questions to get a Visa on Arrival, you just need to pay a fee.

Currently, the fee for a VOA is 500,000 Indonesian Rupiah (around $30). They accept US dollars and Indonesian Rupiah, and you can pay by card.

After you receive your Visa on Arrival, you can contact a visa agency to get it extended. You need to do this while you still have at least 10 days remaining on your 30-day visa, but it’s recommended you start the process the day you arrive in Bali.

When I extended my VOA to two months it took 20 days and cost around 800,000 Indonesian Rupiah ($55).

You can find a visa agency through your hotel, hostel, or guest house.

VISA EXTENSION HACK!

The cool thing is that you don’t actually have to be in one place for all 20 days. The second time I did a VOA extension I gave my passport to the visa company, got my fingerprints stamped at the immigration in Jimbaran on day 4, and then left!

I did a bunch of island hopping from Bali, the Gilis, Lombok, Flores, and the Komodo Islands without my passport – just my NY state ID, because I was traveling within Indonesia.

My hostel back in Canggu, Nyaman Hostel, received my passport with the visa extension stamp and held it for me until I was done with my travels. It was super convenient and way easier than waiting around in one spot for 20 days like I did for my first visa exemption!

Keep in mind that the Indonesian Visa on Arrival takes up a whole page on your passport! So make sure you have enough free space.

passport with lots of stamps

15. Don’t Forget To Book Your Onward Ticket

You’ll probably be asked for your onward ticket, which is your ticket out of Indonesia before you board your inbound plane.

You need to have an outbound flight already booked, legally, to enter Indonesia.

Don’t know when you’ll be leaving, or to where? No problem.

You can use a service like Onward Ticket which books an outbound ticket for you and then cancels it within the next few days. This is completely legal and it’s just to meet entry requirements.

I’ve used Onward Ticket more times than I can count, as a full-time traveler I’m not always sure where my next location will be!

💰 Full Disclosure –  I’ve spent hundreds of dollars on onward ticket mess-ups over the years. I advise you to book your onward ticket at least a few hours ahead of time before you’re at the airport because that’s where I always mess up when I leave it until the last minute!

Bali Travel Tips: Cellular Service

16. do link your number to your whatsapp account .

Outside of the United States, everyone uses the app WhatsApp for communication.

If you’re visiting Bali and don’t have a WhatsApp yet you should definitely download the app and link it to your phone number  before  getting to Bali.

If you link your phone number to your WhatsApp, it will work no matter which SIM you have put in! It’s amazing.

You can use WhatsApp in Bali to organize tours, book hotels, or talk to just about anyone.

17. Don’t Forget To Register Your Phone At The Airport! (If You Plan On Staying Longer Than 3 Months)

There’s a problem with people illegally importing smartphones to Indonesia.

Because of this, Indonesia requires people to register all cell phones at the airport upon arrival if they’re staying longer than three months overall.

If you fail to do this, you need to pay a 40% tax on the value of your phone or the government just shut your SIM card slot off after 3 months in the country.

The 3 months leeway period is so the government doesn’t accidentally shut down tourists’ cell phones, but this allowance doesn’t reset when you exit and re-enter the country!

18. DO Buy A “Tourist SIM Card” When You Arrive In Bali

You should DEFINITELY buy an Indonesian SIM card when you arrive in Bali. You’ll need a local number for a lot of services, like ride-sharing apps, food delivery, etc.

Local SIM cards and data plans are easy to get and affordable. You can purchase your SIM through most hotels or go to a “Telkomsel” store.

Telkomsel is the most popular cell provider in Indonesia.

You can top up your SIM card with more data whenever you need to in person at convenience stores like Indomaret, Circle K, and Alfamart.

There are two types of SIM cards in Bali, normal SIM and “tourist SIM”. You’re going to want to buy a tourist SIM.

The difference between the two is that a normal SIM card will always work and a tourist SIM only lasts for a few months.

You need to have an unlocked phone to use a foreign SIM card.

Bali Travel Tips: Communication

19. don’t worry about the language barrier .

Almost everywhere you go in Bali you’ll be able to find someone who speaks a little bit of English or a foreigner who speaks a little Indonesian.

There are so many foreigners in Bali that the language barrier isn’t an impossible divide like it is in some other more remote locations.

Bahasa Indonesian is also a very easy language for English speakers to pronounce. Everything is written phonetically, and it’s written in the Latin Alphabet, the same as English.

So, if you use Google Translate, it will be very easy for you to read things in Bahasa and be understood if you need assistance.

bali travel expert

20. Do Download Google Translate Offline

Bahasa Indonesian is one of the languages available on Google Translate’s app for offline download.

If you get a local SIM card you won’t have to worry about being offline very often, but it’s good to download the language offline just in case you wind up in a poor service area.

A Nasi Campur, which is a traditional Indonesian mixed plate you'll find at local warungs.

Bali Travel Tips: Food

21. don’t let fear of “bali belly” ruin your trip .

Bali Belly is the affectionate term foreigners have for travelers’ diarrhea in Indonesia.

Foreign tourists are sometimes so afraid of Bali Belly that it keeps them from enjoying the island to the fullest!

The local food is one of the best things in Bali! You’ll see local cafes, called “Warungs”, everywhere.

The most popular local dishes are Nasi Goreng (fried rice), Mie Goreng (fried noodles), Nasi Campur (platter of different Balinese foods with rice), and Babi Guling (roasted suckling pig).

bali travel expert

22. Don’t Forget You Can Order Food For Delivery In Bali!

Did you know you can order food 24 hours a day in most areas of Bali? Your Gojek app has an option called “GoFood” that you can easily use to order food to your door.

You can also use the Grab app for this! They’re basically the same app, Grab accepts non-Indonesian credit cards and Gojek does not, but I find Gojek’s map to be a lot more accurate.

bali travel expert

23. Do Know The Correct Price Of Things

If you know the correct local price for things then you’ll know how much to pay.

Obviously, a coconut off the side of the road will be cheaper than a fresh coconut from a 5-star resort, but it’s a good metric to know how fancy a place is by how far the prices deviate from the norm.

Knowing the local price particularly comes in handy with taxis. There are a lot of places in Bali where you can’t use Uber or Gojek (Indonesian Uber) due to the  Bali Taxi Mafia .

In these situations, you’ll have to negotiate a price with a taxi driver off the street.

You can open your Gojek or Grab app and see what the local price for the ride you’re going to take  should be , and use that as a jumping-off point for negotiations.

You’re probably never going to get a taxi off the street as cheap as an Grab or Gojek, and there’s no point in stressing yourself out too much over a few dollars!

24. Don’t Fall For Tourist Traps

This is a hard-to-follow piece of advice because unless you eat at 100% local Indonesian Warungs , you’re gonna fall for some tourist traps!

Just today I paid 70K IDR (around $5), for a terrible “fresh juice” which was like 90% water.

Basically, any place in Bali that sells Western-style food or vegan/healthy food might be a tourist trap, it’s a bit of a coin toss and you just need to try a bunch of different places to find the best food.

Also, always read the online reviews for cafes to know where to go.

“Warung” is the name of a casual Indonesian eatery – similar to a diner in the USA.

Bali Travel Tips: Shopping

25. don’t assume everything will be “cheap” .

It’s just as easy to spend $100 (1,500,000 Indonesian Rupiah) on something in Bali as it is to spend $10.

This is because things are priced for foreign tourists, who earn in Dollars rather than Rupiah.

Depending on where you buy something you could be paying a wildly different price for the same item!

26. Do Order Anything You Need Online

While there’s no Amazon Prime in Indonesia, ANYTHING you want in Bali can be delivered!

I take a lot of specific supplements for my health, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that they were all easily available with express shipping off of Indonesia’s version of Amazon, Tokopedia.

If you need prescription medicine (see above about how I wrote prescription meds cannot be shipped to Indonesia), you can use Tokopedia to ship a variety of Medications to your hotel.

You will have to supply a doctor’s prescription to order medicine online, and you can get that by visiting a traveler’s clinic.

bali travel expert

27. Do Shop Locally

It feels so good to shop in Bali because so many of the stores are locally owned and sell genuine handmade goods!

Bali Travel Tips: Money

28. do carry lots of cash on you .

Indonesia is a cash-first country! Although a lot of restaurants, hotels, etc will accept cards, a lot of them don’t.

Expect tours, taxis, and meals to be paid for in cash. Sometimes they will accept cards, but when that happens it’s more like a pleasant surprise!

A Balinese Traditional Dancer at the Ubud Water Palace.

29. Don’t Depend On Your Foreign Credit Cards

While you shouldn’t have a problem at restaurants and hotels paying in person with foreign credit cards, a lot of Indonesian websites only accept Indonesian credit cards.

This is a recurring problem for foreigners who want to top off their Telkomsel SIM cards with more data because the site only accepts Indonesian credit cards.

Other Indonesian apps and websites like Gojek have it immediately set to “cash” when you call a ride because the app doesn’t accept non-Indonesian cards.

Even some brick-and-mortar stores like Indomaret, which is a convenience store chain in Indonesia, don’t accept foreign cards!

Because Indonesian websites won’t likely take foreign credit and debit cards, it’s best to book anything you want ahead of time through non-Indonesian websites.

The sites I use the most for booking things online in Indonesia are Booking.com, HostelWorld, and Agoda for housing, and for activities, I use Klook and Viator.

bali travel expert

30. Do Learn How to Use Kiosk Pay Systems

If you do not have an Indonesian Bank Account, you will likely have to pay for things at a convenience store like Alfamart, Circle K, or Indomaret that would usually be purchased online.

A good example of this is when I need to pay my electricity bill. Since I don’t have an Indonesian bank account, I cannot use their online portal.

Instead, I take a picture of my router and bring it to the nearest Alfamart – There’s one on practically every street corner.

There I can give the cashier my serial code, and then pay my bill in cash.

You can use this system to pay all types of bills, as well as shop for things online.

When I buy things on Tokopedia, which is Bali’s version of Amazon, it gives me a code to bring to the local convenience store. I have 24 hours to give the cashier this code and pay my bill in cash, or the sale doesn’t go through.

bali travel expert

31. Do Hang On To Small Bills

People really hang on to their small bills in Bali, and it’s hard to get change a lot of the time.

A few times I’ve been at a restaurant that only accepts cash and they have looked at me like I was crazy for needing cash for a 100K Rupiah bill! ($7)

When you do get small bills, hang onto them for situations where you need change.

bali travel expert

32. Do Know About The Mandatory Service & VAT Charges

In most restaurants that cater to tourists, it will say “all prices subject to mandatory service and tax” at the bottom, so you don’t have to worry about tipping too much in Bali because it’s added for you.

The tax is 10%, and the service charge is usually 5-10%.

33. Don’t Be Afraid To Haggle

Bartering (respectfully) is a part of Balinese culture. If you’re buying a service, whether it’s a taxi ride or a tour, the price is usually up for negotiation.

I wrote a whole article you can read here on how to haggle in Egypt and it holds up pretty well for Bali as well.

Blogger Katie Caf on a blue vespa scooter rented through Bikago in Canggu, Bali.

Bali Travel Tips: Transportation

34. do download gojek or grab.

GoJek is the premier ride-hailing app in Bali. It’s the easiest way to get around, and the app also includes other services like GoFood for food delivery or GoPay for payment transfers.

Grab is essentially the same thing, but I find the map to be a little less accurate. I still use them both.

I use GoJek multiple times a day, I really couldn’t live without it in Bali!

Sometimes taxi and scooter rides are very inexpensive on Gojek. Sometimes as low as 10K Indonesian Rupiah (around 50 cents) for a scooter taxi.  I personally think, as someone who earns in dollars, that they should be getting compensated more for their effort, don’t you?  If you get a very inexpensive Gojek please consider tipping a good amount, even 50-100%. The drivers will be very grateful!

35. Don’t Rely On Ride-Sharing Apps When Leaving City Centers

It’s easy to hail a Gojek or Grab from the city center to a tourist destination a half hour away, but it’s not so easy to get one coming back!

There usually aren’t any cars you can call off an app outside cities. If you want to visit a place more than 20 minutes from the city center of whatever town you’re in I recommend hiring a driver.

bali travel expert

36. Don’t Give In To The Bali Taxi Mafia

The Taxi Mafia in Bali  is always a hot topic.

Basically, a taxi mafia is when a bunch of taxi drivers get together, usually in popular tourist locations, and work together to push ride-sharing apps out so they can overcharge tourists.

This is all fine, except for the fact that the Taxi Mafias usually resort to violence to meet their goals.

Popular ridesharing apps like Uber actually have pulled out of tourist locations like Tulum and Cancun in Mexico due to the threat of violence against their drivers.

I’m all for shopping local and supporting local economies but I don’t agree with giving in to taxi mafias.

In Bali, you’ll see a lot of signs saying Gojek, Grab, and Bluebird, all popular taxi apps, are illegal. This isn’t true.

Sometimes you’ll have to get picked up on a side street or outside of a tourist location if you’re using a ride-sharing app, otherwise, you risk getting harassed by the Taxi Mafia.

If you want to avoid the stress of dealing with the Taxi Mafia, consider hiring a private driver in Bali for the day or taking a multi-day trip.

It’s usually cheaper to hire a private driver than to hail multiple cabs in a day!

A closeup of two gray Balinese Macaques at the Ubud Monkey Forest in Bali.

37. Don’t Get Stressed Out By Street Harassment

Walking down any street in a town or city in Bali you’ll hear “taxi? taxi? taxi? come into my shop? just looking?” over and over. and over. and over again.

It’s annoying! And honestly, tourist harassment is part of the reason I always use ride-sharing apps in Bali, because I don’t want to encourage it, but it’s just people trying to make a living.

They don’t mean any harm and a quick “no thank you” usually does the trick.

If I’m walking somewhere alone I always put my headphones in and avoid eye contact until I’m out of the town center.

38. Don’t Worry About The Honks

Honking a car or scooter horn means something different in Indonesia than it does in America. In New York, honking at someone can be considered a big “F-You!”, but in Bali, it just means ‘hey, watch out – I’m here”.

A lot of the time drivers honk lightly when turning a corner so if anyone is driving in the opposite direction they will know another car is there.

This is necessary because the streets are so narrow, so if you’re driving around tight corners remember to honk before turning!

Bali Travel Tips: Housing

39. do stay in a traditional guest house at least once.

After staying in a variety of hotels, Airbnb, and homestays in Bali I was pleasantly surprised that my favorite place to stay in all of Indonesia was the traditional homestays.

Usually family-run, Balinese traditional houses are located in compounds, which are homes to small communities or extended families.

bali travel expert

A few of the perks I’ve found in staying in a traditional house are:

💸 They’re cheaper

🙋 The hosts (In my experience) are more attentive

🍳 Free homemade breakfast

👪 Supporting small businesses directly

🏠 Traditional Balinese architecture is  beautiful

🐱 There are usually a ton of animals around

For solo female travelers : I felt more safe located in a compound than in a stand-alone villa or apartment complex.

40. Don’t Stay In The Same Place For Your Whole Trip!

Bali is a pretty tiny Island, you can drive the whole length of it in less than 5 hours, but all the different cities within it have a totally different vibe.

Canggu has become the digital nomad capital with lots of long-term tourists, Kuta and Seminyak are where people go surfing and partying, and Ubud is the spiritual yoga retreat center on the island.

41. Do Stay In Hostels If You’re Solo Traveling

Hostels are the best for making friends while solo traveling! If it’s your first time staying in a hostel, don’t be worried – the ones in Bali are world-class.

Some hostels in Bali are even as nice (or nicer) than hotels.

Blogger Katie Caf poses at Handara Gate in North Bali, facing away from the camera she makes a peace sign holding two fingers in the air on both hand. The gate is lit up at sunset with orange and red hues, and the sky is blue and cloudy.

42. Go All-Out At A Luxury Hotel (If You Have The Budget For It!)

Bali has become famous for being a luxury travel destination. You NEED to do at least one luxury experience while you’re on the island!

From flower baths, infinity pools, 5-star dining, and endless Balinese Spas, Bali literally has everything .

bali travel expert

43. Do Treat Yourself To A Luxury Experience (At Least Once)

Bali is world-renowned for its spas and luxury services. Even if you’re a budget traveler, having a luxury experience in Bali is something you shouldn’t miss out on!

There are a lot of people on the street offering massages and spa experiences for $5, but I recommend only booking things online with positive reviews.

Bali Travel Tips: Tourism

44. don’t be worried about “looking like a tourist” .

You’re gonna look like a tourist! It’s fine to be a tourist. I’ve been in Bali for over two years and I still look like a tourist.

Why is it fine to look like a tourist? Because Bali is amazing and totally deserves its reputation for being one of the top tourist destinations in the world.

girl with sarong in Bali

45. Do Be A Respectful Visitor

While it’s okay to be a tourist, it’s not okay to disrespect the local culture.

I was invited to a cremation ceremony recently – these are a big deal in Bali and sacred to their religion.

The Balinese people welcome foreigners into their temples and ceremonies from the goodness of their hearts, and a lot of tourists were there being loud and obnoxious in the crowd. This isn’t okay!

bali travel expert

Tips for being respectful in Bali:

  • Cover up in temples:  For men AND women. That’s one thing I love about Balinese culture is that it’s not just the women who are expected to be modest and respectful in houses of worship. You’ll also see men be asked to tie sarongs around their waists if they show up in shorts.
  • Don’t make fun of the culture:  You’d think that goes without saying, but all the time you hear about tourists getting in trouble, and even  banned  from Indonesia, for mocking Balinese culture.
  • Don’t step on the offerings:  You’ll see these sacred offerings all over, usually on the floor. Just because they’re on the floor doesn’t mean you should step on them! It’s considered to be extremely disrespectful to step on the offerings.

46. Do Consider Taking An Organized Tour If You Want To Make The Most Of Your Time

Only have a week in Bali? If you want to make the most of your vacation, I recommend booking an organized tour to maximize your time.

Years ago on my first trip to Indonesia, I tried to save money by touring the island on a self-guided tour instead of using a tour company. While it did save money it was  so stressful !

We wound up stranded in Gilimanuk Ferry Port in the middle of the night because we didn’t know Gojeks couldn’t pick us up there, in addition to other mishaps we could have avoided by using a tour service.

It was fun, but if I could do it again I would take a tour to save on stress.

If you have the room in your budget and want to make the most out of your time in Bali you should definitely take a guided tour.

47. Don’t Get Too Disappointed By “Instagram vs Reality”

A lot of “Influencers” in Bali make their living by selling the dream.

While Bali  is  an amazing place, there have been a handful of times when I arrived at a popular location just to be let down! The photos online of a location completely didn’t match the reality.

While that can be disappointing, don’t let it get you down! For every overhyped spot in Bali, there are three more hidden gems.

48. Do Show Up Early & Beat The Crowds

Planning on going to some amazing place you saw on Instagram? Well, so is everyone else!

If you want to visit a popular tourist spot in Bali make sure to go first thing in the morning! Otherwise, your time at the attraction might be ruined by crowds.

49. Do Venture Off The Beaten Track

For every over-hyped thing in Bali, there are 10 secret gems that you can’t find on Instagram!

I recommend going to Google Maps to find undiscovered spots. If you just zoom in on different locations you’re guaranteed to find a ton of waterfalls, temples, etc people don’t usually go to.

50. Don’t Go During The Rainy Season!

Bali doesn’t have Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall as North America does. Bali only has two seasons: the rainy season, and the dry season.

The rainy season is between November and March, with the best (and dryest) time to visit Bali between May and September.

Blogger Katie Caf poses for a photo in a blue bikini on top of a red scoopy scooter in Bali.

51. Do Hire A Private Driver Or Rent Your Own Scooter So You Can Explore Outside Of Tours

Group tours are great for easy budget travel, but if you really want to visit tourist attractions at the best time I recommend either driving yourself or hiring a private driver and making your own itinerary.

If you make your own day tour itinerary, you can visit the most popular tourist attractions early in the day and beat the crowds.

For groups of 3 or more it usually is cheaper to hire a car and driver than rent scooters for the day.

52. Do Venture Outside Of Bali To Other Indonesian Islands!

Craving adventure? You can climb Kawah Ijen acid volcano  and visit giant waterfalls like Tumpak Sewu on Bali’s neighboring island of Java. Or, if you’re more into relaxing you can swim on the white sand beaches at the  Gili Islands  east of Bali.

There’s so much to do in Indonesia! If you have a week or more I recommend exploring other islands as well as Bali.

53. Don’t Forget – It’s Bagus!

Bagus (pronounced bag-goose) means “good” in Indonesian but it’s used in a much wider context – Bagus is cool, Bagus is peace, Bagus is fun.

How’s Bali lately? It’s Bagus 🤙.

Bali is an island that I keep revisiting as there is always so much more to see. The scenery is spectacular and there is a lot of opportunity for being active whether you dive, raft, zip-line, cycle or even hike to the summit of an active volcano. The traditional Balinese gentle culture is prevalent on the island and especially in the east, which remains fairly untouched by tourism. For nice restaurants, bars and boutiques it’s wonderful to spend a couple of days in Seminyak. And I haven’t even started on the beaches…

Where to go

Bright fabrics flutter gently in the breeze while inviting waves lap the soft grey sands of Seminyak’s beaches. This resort area on the island’s west coast just north of Kuta, is Bali’s most stylish beach locale.

With lush greenery and steep rice terraces that flank the soaring banks of the Ayung River, Ubud is one of Bali‘s most scenic and relaxed destinations. It is also peppered with the island’s most important holy sites, temples and artisan workshops.

Spectacularly located between the striking Mount Agung and the serene Lombok Strait, Manggis offers a slower, more traditional stride on Bali’s eastern shores.

On the western side of the Bukit Peninsula, Jimbaran blends its working fishing village atmosphere with a collection of exclusive and tasteful hotels. Almost like a more chilled version of Seminyak, it boasts some of Bali’s most beautiful sandy beaches and calm, clear waters for swimming.

Set on Bali’s south-eastern coast, 40 minutes from Denpasar airport, Nusa Dua is a private enclave where you find some of Bali’s best hotels that line white sandy beaches.

Nestled between Tanah Lot and Seminyak on Bali‘s southern coast, Canggu is all about the laidback vibes. Its black sand beaches are popular with surfers but even if you’re not looking to ride the waves, the epic sunsets are reason enough the visit.

Pemuteran & West Bali National Park

Sitting on the far north western coast near Java, Pemuteran is a quiet bay of black sand beaches, a small village and a wild backdrop of dramatic mountain scenery.

On the northern coast just west of the city of Singaraja, Lovina is a 12-kilometre stretch of low-key black sandy beaches and calm waters for swimming.

Home to a dreamy white sandy coastline and the spectacular Uluwatu Temple, this quiet southern part of Bali offers something for beach lovers and culture enthusiasts alike.

Located just inland from Bali’s eastern coastline, to the south of the dramatic and imposing Mount Agung, Sidemen is truly one of Bali’s hidden treasures. Blessed by a peaceful and picturesque character, defined by the likes of rolling rice fields dotted with attractive temples, Sidemen is a far cry from the more vibrant and developed Balinese coastline, providing something of a rejuvenating escape after days by the beach.

Bali can either be the best time of your life (which it probably will be) or the worst. Spend some time on reading our travel guide; it will help you have a great trip, just like millions of others have had before you.

12 things to know before going to Bali, Indonesia

Jan 18, 2024 • 8 min read

bali travel expert

These top tips for visiting Bali can help you plan the perfect trip © Klaus Vedfelt / Getty Images

The Indonesian island of Bali is a sun-soaked paradise that attracts every type of traveler, from budget-conscious backpackers to luxury jet-setters.

But – as with any destination – the vast majority of travelers (especially first-timers) will have a number of questions, whether it's "Can unmarried couples stay together in Bali?" (an increasingly common one in the light of recently-introduced new rules for tourists in Bali, which we'll get to later) or "What should I wear?"

Thankfully, Bali is one of the easiest destinations to explore, although its size – the island covers 5776 sq km (2230 sq miles) – means travelers should take the time to think about what they want to see and do relatively early on. For example, places such as Seminyak , with its beach clubs and five-star hotels, tend to become somewhat crowded during peak season, while more rural destinations, such as Ubud , might well require a longer taxi journey  but are absolutely worth the effort, especially for those keen to avoid the crowds.

It's also worth bearing in mind that Bali is one of Asia's safest destinations. As with any holiday hot spot, there are always going to be certain things we can do to ensure we stay safe while traveling, but crackdowns on petty theft and bad behavior have all helped transform the island into a wonderfully family-friendly destination .

Here are our top tips for anyone heading to Bali.

A farmer in a terraced field

1. Check your vaccinations are up-to-date before traveling to Indonesia

There are no mandatory vaccinations for visitors to Bali (barring the need for travelers arriving from countries with a high yellow fever transmission risk to carry a yellow fever vaccination certificate), although Hepatitis A, typhoid and tetanus are often recommended. Bali falls into the "low to no risk" category when it comes to malaria.

Rabies remains a big problem in Indonesia, and although it claims fewer lives in Bali than elsewhere (according to the World Health Organization, 11 people died from rabies in the first half of 2023), it still exists, and the rabies vaccination is worth considering. Working out what vaccinations you need for a holiday to Bali is mostly a personal choice, but if you have concerns, contact your local physician for the latest guidance.

2. Bring a reusable bottle

One of the most asked questions by tourists: "Is Bali's tap water safe to drink?" The short answer is "no." Stick to bottled water or, better still, bring a bottle with a built-in water filtering membrane. Purchasing bottled water – especially in restaurants – can quickly become expensive, which is another reason we're fans of reusable filtered ones, such as Larq and Lifestraw. These are also handy when it comes to purifying water used for cleaning fruits and vegetables. Additionally, try to steer clear of ice and use bottled water to brush your teeth.

3. Don't write off the rainy season

Having a rough idea of when dry and rainy seasons fall is undoubtedly something that is useful to know before heading to Indonesia . But bear with us – Bali's rainy season, which takes place between October and April, is a great time to visit. It's typified by short, sharp showers that often only last a few minutes. And in addition to the fact that prices for everything – from regional airfares to hotels – plummet, the island becomes wonderfully lush, the weather is still warm (typically hovering between 24°C/75°F and 29°C/85°F), and the main tourist attractions are blissfully crowd-free. You'll also find it easier to snap up places on excursions, such as snorkeling tours and guided hikes.

4. Buy some bug spray

To be clear, Bali doesn't have a major mosquito problem, but like anywhere in Southeast Asia, these pesky biting bugs love the occasional bloodsucking session – in the case of Bali, particularly during the rainy season between November and April. Lighten the load on your wallet by purchasing your repellent in Bali and opting for bug sprays made in Asia. Popular (and much cheaper) Asian brands you'll find throughout Indonesia include Soffell (snap up the surprisingly pleasant floral-scented version if you can).

5. Avoid traveling during peak times

Traffic in Bali can be horrendous – especially around busier spots such as Denpasar and Kuta – and estimated journey times on apps like Google Maps or Grab are notoriously unreliable. Peak times tend to be 6am to 8am (but roads often remain busy until 10am when day-trippers head out) and 4pm to 7pm. Allow plenty of time to get from A to B, especially when heading to the airport.

6. Pack clothes that will cover you up for when you're not on the beach

In Bali, skimpy swimwear is fine for the beach, but definitely not for trips to a supermarket or restaurant.

Men and women need to ensure their shoulders and upper legs are covered when visiting religious sites, although most of these places will have sarongs for visitors to borrow. Pack like a pro by taking a light cotton scarf that can double as a sarong if you visit a temple or other religious site, and a pair of light cotton trousers (bonus points if they've got a built-in mosquito repellent), which will protect you from bites while also providing enough coverage at sites where tiny denim shorts or a vest just won't cut it.

7. Behave respectfully

Various media reports might give the impression it's easy to get into trouble in Bali, but it's not. In reality, you just need to be sensible: don't do drugs (being caught with under a gram of cannabis will land you in prison), be respectful and dress appropriately at religious sites, don't ride a motorbike or moped without a helmet (Bali's police have recently started cracking down especially hard on foreign moped drivers), and treat locals with respect.

8. Locals will be keen to share their knowledge with you

Staying at a hotel with a concierge or a friendly receptionist? Feel free to grill them about the best local bar, beach or restaurant. The Balinese are incredibly proud of their island  – don't be surprised if the bartender at your favorite beach bar ends up inviting you to their home for dinner with their family – and love nothing more than telling visitors about their favorite beach, nature walk or temple.

9. Eat, drink, stay and shop locally

Don't be afraid to go local, whether this means eating at tiny family-run restaurants or opting for local drink brands. You'll pay less and enjoy delicious local dishes, and you'll be contributing directly to the local economy, too. These days, even the smallest restaurants, bars and independent hotels will be listed on online review sites such as Zomato (especially popular in Asia), and a quick glance should tell you whether the business in question is reputable or not.

10. Carry some loose change

Many businesses in Bali will take payment by card, but there are still plenty of places that only take cash. These include temples, smaller souvenir shops and beachfront masseuses (which, by the way, offer some of the best massages going). ATMs on the island can be unreliable and are also few and far between in some areas. Additionally, don't assume you'll always have the mobile data you'll need to book a ride-share taxi. If you need to hail a tuk-tuk or taxi from the side of the road, it's highly likely you'll need to pay in cash.

When using ATMs, opt for ones connected with major banks (in Indonesia, these include BNI, Bank Mandiri, BCA and CIMB Niaga) to avoid withdrawal fees and remember that Indonesian ATMs issue the cash first, so don't forget to wait for your card to appear.

11. Get around by moped (but always wear a helmet)

Mopeds are the cheapest way to get around Bali  and often – especially during rush hour in places such as Kuta – the quickest, too. They're also offered as a mode of transport by Grab and Gojek (Bali's most popular ride-sharing apps), and prices for journeys via mopeds are significantly cheaper than those made by car. Just remember to check the reviews of your chosen driver and always wear a helmet (the driver will typically provide one). Avoid hailing scooter taxis on the street – you won't be able to check their credentials, and, in reality, Grab and Gojek have so many scooter drivers (both identifiable for their bright green jackets) that there's simply no need.

12. There is a no-sex-before-marriage law

In December 2022, the Indonesian government brought in a new law that forbids sex outside of marriage. Technically, this law applies to visitors as well as locals.

At the time, it was announced that the legislation won't be introduced until late 2025. Since then, Bali's governor has said that the law – dubbed by some newspapers as the "Bali bonk ban"– won't apply to tourists and, additionally, guilty parties can only be reported by spouses, parents or children. In summary, the law represents a worrying development for human rights in Indonesia, but it's not one that is likely to affect tourists.

How to plan a trip to Bali, Indonesia

As the world’s largest archipelagic nation, Indonesia encompasses thousands of geographically diverse destinations, but for culture, nature, adventure and relaxation, Bali stands out.

The tropical Indonesian island of Bali has enticed travellers for over a century with its coralline seas, sacred volcanoes, mist-shrouded lakes and vibrant living heritage. A favoured holiday destination for antipodeans, Bali's irresistible beaches beckon backpackers, surfers and families alike. The south-coast areas of Seminyak, Kuta and Canggu, close to the airport, are where most visitors flock to, but it’s even better when you roam a little further.

Flowers in the foreground with rice paddies and a mountain in the background

Best for: culture Straddling a series of river valleys at the base of Bali’s central highlands, Ubud was once a cluster of villages with an eclectic art colony that drew writers, painters and filmmakers from distant lands. Today, its museums house sprawling collections by the island’s most revered artists and dozens of small galleries exhibit contemporary works, such as Purga Artspace , attached to the endearing library cafe, Littletalks Ubud . Listen out for the exuberant polyphony of gamelan (traditional ensemble music) emanating nightly from the temples. Ubud also hosts a celebration of contemporary artists, Ubud Open Studios , and Southeast Asia’s largest annual literary event, Ubud Writers and Readers Festival .

Be sure to visit one of Bali’s best independent bookstores, Ganesha Bookshop , and one of the nation’s leading traditional textile conservationists, Threads of Life . Delve further into Ubud’s cultural past and present and see a host of archaeological treasures on a walking tour led by Ubud Story Walks . After a culture-packed day, refresh in a secluded bungalow and the natural stone pool at Rumah Semanggi . For a culturally immersive stay, Gayatri and Honeymoon Guesthouse both preserve Bali’s ornate architectural style, while an edifying introduction to Indonesia’s diverse regional cuisines can be found at Warung Pulau Kelapa , Nusantara and Hujan Locale .

Flowers in the foreground with a Hindunese temple on a lake in the background

Best for: nature The crisp air of Bedugul, a horticultural district in the undulating hills of central Bali, is a welcome reprieve from the dense humidity of the south. Overlooking Lake Beratan — said to have been Bali’s largest lake until an earthquake split it into three — lies Indonesia’s biggest botanical garden, Kebun Raya Bali. Established in the late 1950s, it contains 2,400 species from across the archipelago, including a giant ficus thought to be over 100 years old whose towering, Tolkienesque roots have tangled into awe-inspiring arches. A stroll east past ancient cycads is one of the island’s most picturesque picnic spots: a grassy slope fringed by the saffron blooms of flame trees before the duck-egg blue lake beyond.

Visitors can wake to this view at Kebun Raya Bali's onsite Guesthouse Etnobotani or take a 20-minute drive along the northeastern shore of neighbouring Lake Buyan to Giriwood , a boutique hotel with villas enveloped by the Wanagiri forest. Around one mile north is the trailhead to Banyu Wana Amertha, an ensemble of four exquisite waterfalls. When it’s time to refuel, the bebek timbungan —   tender, aromatic duck cooked in bamboo — at Secret Garden Village is a delicious option.

Villages along a coastline with a mountain in the background

Best for: adventure Against the backdrop of majestic Mount Agung, Bali’s tallest and most sacred volcano, Amed on the island’s northeast coast is as enchanting below the water as it is above. A string of seven fishing villages fanning out from black sand shores, its usually calm seas and fertile volcanic soils have created a haven for weird and wondrous creatures. From otherworldly nudibranchs (soft-bodied marine molluscs) to mind-boggling mimic octopuses, the critters lurking in Amed’s silty depths have secured its reputation as a global hotspot for macro diving — a style of diving named after the kind of lens photographers use to capture such colourful marine life. Meanwhile, just over nine miles northwest in the shallow waters of Tulamben lies the coral-draped skeleton of the USAT   Liberty , one of the most accessible wreck dive sites in the world.

If you prefer snorkelling over scuba diving, keep an eye out for hawksbill sea turtles gracefully gliding over the reefs fringing the coast. One of the healthiest reefs is just over 300ft west of The Kampung , two collections of charming wooden seafront bungalows and a spacious villa for up to ten guests. You can order in hearty Indonesian meals from Warung Agung (try the fragrant pepes ikan — fish steamed in a banana leaf) or sample the superb Spanish omelette from Zaitun.

Aerial view of a white-sand beach with traditional Balinese boats anchored

Best for: relaxation One of the island’s oldest tourism areas, Sanur’s gentle charm and relatively minimal traffic make it popular among visitors seeking Bali’s more serene side. In contrast to the southwest’s barrelling swells, Sanur’s southeast coast is an almost constantly calm tidal lagoon protected by distant reefs. At sunrise and sunset when the wind is low, the lagoon glows like a vast mirror, glassy and luminescent, reflecting the celestial hues of the changing sky. On clear dusks and dawns, the silvery silhouette of Mount Agung soars above the horizon.

A paved path — the first beachfront walk in Bali — stretches across the sand from Sanur Beach to Mertasari Beach around four miles south. Recently doubled to designate pedestrian and cycle lanes, it’s lined with clothing stalls, cafes, seafood restaurants and resorts, such as the boutique Tandjung Sari . Established in the early 1960s, the luxury heritage hotel has an open-air restaurant that serves refined Indonesian dishes and international favourites beneath the curving limbs of towering trees adorned with lanterns. Families looking for a relaxing getaway will enjoy the miniature water park at Prama Sanur Beach Bali and appreciate the creative comfort food at Soul on the Beach and Shotgun Social .
