Layover in Oslo – the ultimate guide 2024

Oslo, Norway

The Norwegian capital city is an interesting place. On a short layover in Oslo, you certainly won’t have time to see everything it has to offer. But if you can’t stand the thought of wasting time in an airport lounge when there’s so much to explore, you could make good use of your Oslo stopover by taking a trip into the city and seeing some of what makes it so unique.

Oslo Airport is an intimidating 27 miles or 45 km from the center of the city it serves. However, the airport is connected to Oslo by the Flytoget shuttle train. This train reaches central Oslo in 20 minutes, and trains run every 10 minutes, meaning you can get into central Oslo even during a relatively short connection. Don’t forget to drop off your unneeded bags at a Bounce luggage storage in Oslo. Traveling light will make it much easier to get around the city and see some of its attractions during your Oslo Airport layover.

6 hour layover

After you’ve gotten through customs and dropped off your bags at an Oslo suitcase storage, your time in the city will be limited. However, the Flytoget train makes it easy to get a glimpse of Oslo even on a short layover. The train stops at Oslo Central Station , meaning you’ll be right in the heart of town almost immediately.

Outside the station, you’ll be greeted by the Tiger statue that is one of the city’s main landmarks. Get a couple of photos, then move on to the Northern Lights Xperium . On such a short Oslo layover, you won’t be able to see the Aurora Borealis for yourself, but this unique attraction offers the next best thing. It uses state-of-the-art visual technology to re-create the experience of seeing the northern lights, and it will be difficult not to be bewitched by the spectacle. The show only lasts 15 minutes, meaning you’ll still have time to grab a snack or drink in the center of Oslo without having to worry about making your connection.

  • Take the Flytoget to Oslo Central Station.
  • Don’t forget to get some photos with the Tiger sculpture right outside the station.
  • Head to the Northern Lights Xperium for a guaranteed encounter with one of Norway’s most impressive natural phenomena.

Oslo, Norway

8 hour layover

With an eight-hour-long layover in Oslo, you’ll be able to branch out a little bit. After dropping your bags at an Oslo luggage storage, you’ll be ready to take in more of the city. From the Northern Lights Xperium, a 20-minute walk through the city will bring you to Tjuvholmen Sculpture Park. This waterfront park is small, but the sculptures make it an interesting place to relax and get some fresh air, and the waterfront location makes it an excellent place for photographs. You’ll also find a beach in the area if you’re lucky enough to get a warm day, and there’s also a spa and even a museum of modern art in Tjuvholmen if you have more time to spend.

  • Walk to Tjuvholmen from Northern Lights Xperium.
  • Enjoy the sculpture park and the beach if the weather permits.
  • With more time to spend in Tjuvholmen, you could visit the modern art museum or enjoy a spa treatment.

Skyline of Oslo, Norway

10 hour layover

With an additional two hours to spend on your Oslo layover, you could take a nice walk along the harbor to the forbidding fortress of Akershus. Built in the 13th century, this impressive castle houses both the Norwegian Armed Forces Museum and Norway’s Resistance Museum , making it the best destination in the city for fans of military history. The castle also offers impressive views over Oslo’s harbor and is a great place to wander for a couple of hours and get some exercise.

  • Walk along the harbor to Akershus Fortress.
  • Visit Norway’s Resistance Museum or the Norwegian Armed Forces Museum to get a better understanding of Norwegian history.
  • Enjoy the views of Oslo Harbor from the battlements.

12 hour layover

On a 12 hour long layover in Oslo, you can afford to spend a bit more time getting to know the Norwegian capital. After Akershus Fortress, it’s only a short walk to Oslo Opera House . This stunning building is a marvel of modern architecture and engineering, and even if you can’t see a show during your time in Oslo, a tour of the building will help you understand the artistry that went into its construction. You’ll even get to visit the roof of the building to enjoy the incredible view over the city.

  • Walk from Akershus Fortress to Oslo Opera House.
  • Take an hour-long tour to explore the building thoroughly, including walking on the roof.

Oslo, Norway

24 hour layover

On an overnight layover in Oslo, you’ll be able to really get to grips with the city. Choose a hotel that is close to the center of town to make it easier to get back to the airport when the time comes. Plus, that way, you’ll be able to enjoy the city’s nightlife. Norwegians have a reputation for being reserved, but once the drinks start flowing in the city’s many bars and restaurants, that quickly changes. You could also try Norwegian delicacies such as whale steak, smoked salmon, and lutefisk in some of Oslo’s trendy eateries.

With more time on your hands, you’ll be able to head a little out of the center of the city to visit one of Oslo’s most popular attractions. The Viking Ship Museum is a must-visit for fans of history, as it holds three authentic Viking ships dating back to the ninth century. There is also a video presentation, and this small but perfectly formed museum is a great place to visit when you have time to kill in Oslo. In the same area, you’ll find the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History, which lets you explore a reconstructed traditional Norwegian village as though you’ve stepped back in time.

  • Try Norwegian cuisine in some of Oslo’s top restaurants.
  • Visit the Viking Ship Museum to see some of the city’s historical treasures.
  • Explore the past in the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History.

What to Do on a Layover in Oslo

Nordbytjernet lake, Jessheim

Everyone loves to hate layovers because they’re inconvenient, boring, and are keep travellers away from where they really want to be. Think about a layover as a mini adventure instead—especially if the layover is in a destination such as Oslo —where the convenient train and bus schedule will help tourists get to places fast.

If you have less than three hours.

Given that it takes at least 20 minutes by bus to reach Jessheim (see below) and the same amount of time to get back, it may be best to stay at the Gardermoen . But fear not: the Oslo Airport was renovated this year and is definitely not lacking in entertainment options and things to do as its 32 shops and 38 restaurants and bars can attest to. Enjoy food ranging from sushi and burgers to modern Nordic cuisine, shop for anything from books and beauty products to high fashion and gifts—even play the piano. The airport also offers free WiFi everywhere. Time will just fly by.

Lake Nordbytjernet

Nordbytjernet Lake, Jessheim

If the weather is better suited to indoor adventures, Jessheim may still be worth a visit. There are many cool Norwegian and fellow-Scandinavian shops that deserve some attention inside Jessheim Storsenter , from Danish design brand Søstrene Grene to Swedish fashion maverick MQ and local, eco-conscious favorite Lindex . Head downstairs and have a cosy cup of joe at Kaffebrenneriet —there are a couple cafés with that name throughout the country, but there’s something about the ambiance in this one that will make patrons forget about the noisy shopping center above their heads. Order a Thor’s Hammer (a very large and very strong cup of coffee) and a slice of østekakke (creamy cheesecake).

But at some point, it will be time to leave. Those itching for some more shopping, head towards Fretex and find some affordably priced vintage clothes—and contribute to a good cause while shopping. Or buy some fresh, local produce (but also a big variety of more ‘exotic’ fruit and vegetables) from the grocery store right across the street from Fretex and if all that shopping has led to hunger, head to Don for one of the best burgers this side of New York. Just know that they don’t take cash, so make sure to bring along a credit or debit card. After that hearty meal, walk to Jessheim’s bus station and head back to the airport. Don’t forget any newly bought items.

If you have more than 6 hours

Explore Oslo . Check ruter.no beforehand, but usually there are several trains going to Oslo about every ten minutes or so. The train ticket is a bit more expensive (93 NOK; €9.89; $11.68), but it gets to Oslo’s city centre in about 26 minutes—just make sure to avoid the express train, as it’s double the amount of money and not really that much faster.

While in Oslo, head down to the waterfront and admire all the new buildings. Start with the Opera House , taking in the way its white marble and tilting design are making it look like an iceberg amid the Bjørvika area. Then walk to Aker Brygge and maybe visit a museum or two (the Nobel Peace Center is also there) before grabbing a bite to eat at the Fish Market . On the way back to the station, pass through the magical Christiania Square , sit for a coffee, and capture a couple of Instagram shots.

Depending on how long the layover , try to squeeze in a visit to Grünerløkka , Oslo’s hippest neighborhood. Once there, enjoy the numerous vintage stores, quirky cafés, cool bars, and the city’s biggest food market, Mathallen. Just make sure to head back to the airport in time to make the connecting flight.

History permeates throughout the sophisticated, sculpture-lined streets of Oslo . Walking around Norway’s capital city, founded in 1040, you appreciate a unique juxtaposition of old and new with everything from architecture and art to style and culture.  A city that was once rife with Vikings is now home to young families, bankers, artists and hipster-ish chefs bringing their own imaginative flavors to traditional Nordic cuisine. Whether Norway’s capital is your final destination, or you’re just passing through, we’ve put together a guide for a perfect 24-hours in Oslo.

Royal Palace Oslo | Photo by Compass + Twine

Visit the Royal Palace

The Royal Palace isn’t nearly as barricaded as one might expect, like many of the great palaces in Europe. The majestic, yellow building is located in the center of Palace Park, and you can basically just stroll up to the entrance! Of course, it’s still heavily guarded, but there’s something romantic and old time-y about being able to walk right up to a palace without being blocked by tourist fences. Time it right and you can catch the changing of the guard for a fun and entertaining regal display.

Shop Oslo’s most fashionable street

Not only will you find charming façades aplenty along Bogstadveien, you’ll also find anything your heart desires, from trendy clothing to Scandinavian home goods, for sale. The chic street is a haven for fashionistas and the long stretch has plenty of cafés and bakeries to pop into if you need to refuel.

Lunch at Sentralen | Photo by Compass + Twine

Have lunch at Sentralen

Exposed brick wall and industrial ceiling beams set the scene for the exciting meal to come at Sentralen. The modern, airy space with floor-to-ceiling windows is a welcomed change from the historic façades primarily found in the old city center.  Start with the organic bread and butter from Røros, and then enjoy smoked beetroot with tarragon, egg yolk and horseradish. It’s almost too pretty to eat and definitely a must-order dish at this locals lunch spot.

Statues of Oslo | Photo by Compass + Twine

Stalk the statues

Walking around Oslo, one of the first things you’ll notice is the incredible array of statues and sculptures sprinkled throughout the city. If you’re so inclined, you can even find tours specifically geared toward admiring and learning about all them; but even without a formalized tour, you’re sure to come upon a photo-worthy sculpture at just about every turn in town. The statue in Bankplassen Square titled “Sitting Girl with Headphones” by Marit Krogh is always a favorite.

Visit the Viking Museum

You can’t think of Norway without thinking of the Vikings! Norway has been famous for its ship building for centuries, and the Viking Ship Museum features archaeological pieces, historical artifacts and Viking tombs. This beloved museum has been enticing visitors for decades, because who doesn’t want to learn more about these Norse seafarers and see the world’s best-preserved viking ships live and in person?!

Explore the waterfront at Aker Brygge

Located on the waterfront in the heart of downtown Oslo, Aker Brygge is a beloved contemporary pier development that’s become one of the hottest gathering spots for locals and tourists alike. Boats are docked in the marina nearby, and from there, you can board tour operator ferries to see the Oslo Fjord. If you prefer to stay on land, you’ll find dozens of boutiques, big box retailers, cafés, restaurants and bars. At the start of the pier area, you’ll come upon the iconic yellow facade of the Nobel Peace Center. Then, wind your way down Aker Brygg pier for some coffee and shopping until you hit the Astrup Fearnley Museum at the end. The modern art museum is one of Oslo’s best!

Enjoy dinner at Pjoltergeist

This hidden speakeasy joint is tough to find, so you’ll have to keep your eyes peeled if you’re headed here for dinner. The address is Rosteds gate 15b. Find 15 and then look for the grimy entrance next door with no markings, a cracked glass window, and graffiti on the front. The façade is the only subpar thing about Pjoltergeist; inside, you’ll find one of the coolest restaurants in town. The Asian-inspired cuisine is served as small plates, so plan to share so you can sample everything! The Takoyaki (squid balls), Hel artsijokk (whole artichoke) and Kyllingvinger (chicken wings) are all innovative and excellent.

7 Things to do on a layover at Oslo Gardermoen Airport

Most travellers spend their time researching their next vacation, not the airport where they’ll be killing time until the next flight. If you’re stuck in Oslo Airport, we’ve got you covered! This sleek, modern airport makes for a pleasant stay, especially when prepared with these seven things to do on a layover at Oslo Gardermoen Airport.

1. Enjoy a meal

Airport Dining

2. Hang in the lounge

Airport Lounges

3. Go shopping

Shopping

4. Treat yourself at the salon

For some inter-flight pampering, head to Lakkbar for a 20-minute manicure or pedicure. Cutters also offer no-frills snip-and-style hair service – you won’t get a wash and dry or a quick head massage, but you will get a refreshed look! Both are open daily.

5. Go sightseeing

Layover Sightseeing

Your speediest option is to hop on the Airport Express train (Flytoget), which departs every 10 minutes and has you downtown in 20 minutes, the quickest way into the city. Several bus services are available, too, but these take closer to 40 minutes one way. Taxis are available for direct drop-offs, but they won’t save you any time.

The hop-on hop-off Oslo Fjord cruise is a great way to get fresh air and an overview of the city as you float past the city hall, the modern open house, and a medieval castle. Stroll along the new Harbour Promenade , offering city and water views. (If you are up for a challenge, dip into the Sorenga Seawater Pool , which is chilly even in summer and open year-round!) For some culture and history, head to the Fram Polar Ship Museum , the Kon-Tiki Museum , or the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History . Art buffs will appreciate the outdoor Tjuvholmen Sculpture Park and the National Gallery .

However you spend your time out of the airport, leave plenty of time to return for that next flight!

Free WiFi is available for 2 hours, though you can reconnect for free after your time expires. Paid upgrades are available for higher-speed access.

Marianne is so personable and comfortable to be with. She is knowledgeable and shares lots of information, but does not make us feel like we are drinking from a fire hose. She even made a special stop to help one of us find an item in a shop! We enjoyed her company very much.

February 2024

Neil is a great guide. We had an amazing day in Oslo. If this is the first time you are visiting the city, we highly recommend Neil. Thanks!

We opted for a 2 hour tour that we hoped would help us get a sense of Oslo the city and its history. We needed an English guide, and it was a very cold day! Our guide, Neil, was excellent at balancing our needs for information and even juggling the cold a bit - with a well timed trip to the lobby of the Opera house. Neil is well informed and brought us to major sites and areas in the city center area. It was the perfect start to our 3 day stay in the city

January 2024

He gave us a fantastic tour of the city. We learnt about history, art, culture and much more. In addition he was very flexible and accommodating as we had to change our meeting point at the last minute prompting him to modify the itinerary. We also appreciated the fact that he followed our pace and didn’t rush. Last but not least he suggested a really nice restaurant where we had lunch. He is highly recommended.

What to do with an 8 hour layover in Oslo airport

We're flying from the US arriving in Oslo at 8:30 AM. Our flight out to Aalesund is now at 5:00 PM. SAS dropped the 2:00 PM we were originally on. Any suggestions on what to do during the 8 hour layover (besides taking a nap?) We're not museum people but would be open to interesting sights if time allows. Or even a good restaurant in the area! Thanks.

In similar circumstances (but with less time to pass) we chose to visit Frogner Park to see the Vigeland sculptures:

https://theculturetrip.com/europe/norway/articles/vigeland-humanity-in-the-world-s-largest-sculpture-park/

The park has a cafe and other things to see as well as the sculptures, and is a nice place to pass some time. We caught a cab from the stand at the airport and asked the driver to return to pick us up at a specified time. He did, of course (this is Norway).

but with 8 hours you probably have time to visit the ships museums, three all concentrated on one island, which may provide more to see (but indoors).

Thank you Lola for your recommendation. I apologize that I didn't think to mention that we had seen the park during a trip through Oslo back in the 70's. Probably because I'm older that I want to admit! :)

It was a super place to see - hard to believe one man did all the sculptures.

Thank you again. I was surprised to see such a quick response - you must have been just sitting there waiting for my question. I'll check out the ship museums you mentioned. Bob

The Flytoget express train between OSL and Oslo S is a good alternative to a taxi at 180 NOK each way. A bit more expensive than a NSB train but faster given your layover schedule. The Flytoget runs every 10 minutes and takes about 20 minutes Oslo S to OSL.

A new (to me) feature is the travel guarantee: http://www.flytoget.no/flytoget_eng/Travel-information/Travel-guarantee

If the Airport Express Train arrives at Oslo Airport more than 30 minutes later than scheduled and if, as a consequence, you miss your flight, we will cover the additional cost of booking onto the next available flight.

That train is new since my last visit to Norway but looks like a good option for getting into Oslo. I cannot say what the overall travel time would be to the ship museums, but hopefully someone will know.

Of the three, our favorite was Fram, followed by the Viking ships ( actually a very close second, and only because we haveseen Viking ships at Roskilde in Denmark). The Thor Heyerdahl one was least interesting, although I loved reading his books as a child.

Here is a link to info on the Bygdøy ship museums:

http://www.visitoslo.com/en/activities-and-attractions/boroughs/bygdoy/

Bus 30 runs between Oslo S station and Bygdoy museums including the Fram (one of my favorites). Alternative way back is the ferry that runs between the dock near the Fram and City Hall/Aker Brugge complex. You could have a snack/meal at one of the many Aker Brugge restaurants/cafes before getting a tram back to Oslo S.

Another outdoor alternative to the Vigeand/Frogner Park is to take the T1 Metro up to Holmenkollen (scenic once you get above ground), visit the Ski Museum (and it ski jump tower view of the city), take a walk/hike in the woods surrounding the ski jump complex, have a snack at the Holmenkollen Restaurant just uphill of the T1 platform.

Lola & Edgar - thank you so much for your time and information. I really appreciate it. Now I have more things to figure out - but that's part of the fun of traveling. Bob

A walking tour in  a town so charming  and compact, is the  best way to experience the city of Oslo  nestled in the rugged coastline. Known as a  “fjord city” , the local atmosphere fully lives up to the name with  easily accessible shoreline  upgraded from  old ship yards to an elegant boardwalk  effortlessly connecting the historic city center to its natural setting by the waterfront.

We will begin our day of discoveries by taking a few steps up to the striking  Akershus Fortress  set perfectly on top of a hill for a birds- eye view over the city below. As one of the oldest capitals in Europe, the fortress history itself reveals a great deal of the times when grand structures were built to protect the town. From this medieval setting, we are able to admire the  scenic coastline and harbors  and the very center with the splendidly decorated  Town Hall, home to Nobel Peace Prize ceremony .  Our Oslo Walking Tour now takes us to a more modern platform to revel in the panoramic bliss of Nordic highlands. The  Norwegian National Opera &  Ballet  building is a stunning contemporary addition to the city skyline. We will take a stroll on the  unique rooftop plaza  to explore the award winning structure a bit closer.

Thereafter we will make our way to through the backbone of Oslo and  walk along Karl Johan  to see such important landmarks as  Stortinget ,  the Parliament building, National Theatre,  the historic ensemble of  Oslo University  and will not miss the residence of the local rulers at the  Royal Palace.  The lovely park and palace ensemble complete with small lakes is located right at the end of  Karl Johans Gate . An ideal venue at the end of a slope to take a look back over the relaxed and cozy atmosphere of Oslo.

At the end of the walking tour, your local guide is delighted to direct you to the best of Oslo. Be it  shopping on Karl Johans , enjoying a cup of coffee in a  seaside cafe  or taking the rest of the afternoon exploring on your own.

My wife and I are seniors traveling to Reykjavic with 18 hour layover in OSL. We land in OSL on Saturday Sep 3 at 1:30 PM. That's a long wait at the airport. Any suggestions to use this time? We love sightseeing.

Any suggestions in lodging to rest overnight?

Take the train downtown oslo. Quick and easy.

OSL is in Gardermoen. May I know which downtown you are referring to? Thanks

Stay in hotel near Oslo S station - very central for public transport.

This tip is much appreciated. Thank you

You are Seniors and pushing yourselves at start of trip VERY bad idea. If you are exhausted you''ll not much enjoy the tiny part of Oslo you can see in a few hours. Trying to cram too much into too little time is a very common mistake among less experienced travellers.

Two lodging choices, expensive Radisson (they have 2, red & Blue) at terminal or "cheap" option, about $100 for Gardermoen B&B a 7 minute shuttle ride away ( $7 per pax for shuttle each way).

One can rest just as well in a city centre hotel as in an airport hotel. A hotel close to the station will do the trick, the train from the airport takes 20-25 minutes. A bit of sightseeing if one feels like it, return to the hotel if one has had enough

Viator is a reseller with a mark-up, you can just as well buy the sightseeing trip from the actual provider.
