Arnel Pineda on JOURNEY’s Potential Reunion with Steve Perry and Career Impact

Arnel Pineda on JOURNEY’s Potential Reunion with Steve Perry and Career Impact | Society Of Rock Videos

via GIGS / YouTube

In a chat with Rolling Stone, Arnel Pineda, the frontman of the iconic band Journey, shared his thoughts on the possibility of reuniting with the former lead singer, Steve Perry. Pineda, known for his upbeat personality and powerful vocals, revealed his openness to the idea, sparking excitement among fans.

Dreamy Encounter with an Icon: Arnel Meets Steve Perry

Expressing his amazement at the unexpected encounter with Perry, Pineda shared,

“I posted on Instagram that I had waited 35 years for that. It was dreamy. I couldn’t believe I met him since he’s very reclusive and he avoids people.”

Pineda reflected on the profound influence Perry had on him, stating,

“He’s one of my heroes when it comes to singing. I remember back in the ’80s, I would sleep on the bus with my Walkman on in my ears as his voice sang all these favorite songs from Journey.”

A Career Sacrifice for the Love of Perry and Journey

When asked about the possibility of Perry’s return and the impact on his role in the band, Pineda responded,

“I miss them so much together. Every now and then, I watch their videos together. It’s always them with Steve Perry that I watch.”

Acknowledging the sentiment of fans who proclaim, “No Perry, No Journey,” Pineda sympathized,

“I understand it. Where I come from, we’re so influenced by Western music. We loved the originals, if you know what I mean.”

Addressing the potential impact on his career, Pineda shared a surprising perspective,

“That would be OK to me! I’m telling you. That’s how much I adore him and I adore Journey and how much I adore Steve Perry.”

Anticipation for the Future: Pineda’s Genuine Enthusiasm

Recounting a personal anecdote, Pineda revealed,

“Back in 2005, I resigned from my job in Hong Kong because I lost my voice due to acid reflux. I was telling my friends back then that my only regret was I lost my voice before I had the chance to sing side-by-side with Steve Perry.”

He continued,

“I just wish that one show with him… it would change my life forever. It’s been 30 years now, and the band keeps changing my life in ways nobody would ever guess would happen.”

Arnel Pineda’s genuine admiration for Steve Perry and his eagerness for a potential reunion add a layer of anticipation to Journey’s future. As fans speculate on what could be, Pineda’s words reflect the profound impact that music and collaboration can have on an artist’s journey, transcending the boundaries of time.

Steve Perry Says He 'Would Love Nothing More' Than To Perform Live Again

By Andrew Magnotta @AndrewMagnotta

December 13, 2021

journey tour 2021 steve perry

Steve Perry doesn't have any imminent plans to perform again, but the iconic former Journey frontman is open to arranging something in 2022.

While Perry was open to some live performances in support of his 2018 comeback album, Traces , none have yet materialized and the singer appears focused on writing and producing new music.

He revealed to Ultimate Classic Rock that he would "love nothing more than to be onstage again."

Perry's latest release is The Season , a holiday album. He says he's fielded proposals for residencies in New York and Las Vegas.

"It's been discussed, but nothing has been put together yet," Perry said. "I'm a spur of the moment guy. You never know — you might just see me in a nightclub singing a couple of Christmas songs."

Perry hasn't toured since releasing his second solo album in the mid-'90s. On more than one occasion he's suggested that Journey's unrelenting live schedule in the '80s played a part in driving him to retire the following decade.

Still, after so many years away, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame believes he has more to give to a live audience.

"There's a component of my voice that I can't find unless I'm in front of people," he said. "They bring something out of me that I can't find otherwise. I really hope that's something I get to participate in again."

Arnel Pineda Teases Journey About Steve Perry Return

Journey singer Arnel Pineda revealed that he liked to tease bandmates Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain about inviting former frontman Steve Perry to return.

They’re currently working on a new album , expected this year, while Perry broke his quarter-century silence with the release of Traces in 2018. At the time, he strongly ruled out any chance of rejoining his old band.

Despite the fact that it would cause problems for his own career, Pineda told Rolling Stone that it would be a “dream” to see Perry back onstage with Journey. “I’m delivering on the legacy that 'the voice' has left behind,” he said. “Especially now that he formally passed the torch to me in 2017 … he made that known and he was very gracious. It was very kind of him. It was so generous of him to say that in public. It was really an honor.”

He called  Traces “amazing” and said that, as a result of Perry’s comeback, he’s been “teasing Jonathan and Neal: ‘Why don’t you invite Steve Perry over for a tour?’” He described what it would mean to him: “I never saw them back in the ‘80s. I was just a young kid in Manila, just playing around, with no chance of going to the States and seeing their show, but they were one of my favorite bands.”

When told that Perry had spoken highly of him in recent interviews, Pineda said, “That’s even more pressure I’m getting, hearing this from you. At the same time, I’m truly honored. But I’m not losing [the hope] that one day he’ll join the band for two or three songs. It would be one of the highlights of my life if that happens.”

He insisted it would be “okay to me” if Perry did choose to return and left him without a job. “That’s how much I adore him and I adore Journey and how much I adore Steve Perry,” he said. “I just wish that one show with him … it would change my life forever.”

The rock legends of Journey are approaching nearly half a century of hitmaking with a new No. 1 album and a Las Vegas residency, to boot! ET was with the icons in Sin City for an exclusive look at their orchestral show and to get the inside story on their first new music in more than a decade.

"Hearing it when it was finished it was definitely emotional," lead guitarist Neal Schon tells ET's Denny Directo of their new album, Freedom , which marks their first full-length release in 11 years. "We had recorded this album in a way different way because of COVID."

The band recorded Freedom entirely separate from one another, laying down their respective parts individually in different parts of the world.

"You get lemons, you make lemonade," says keyboardist Jonathan Cain, revealing the surprising silver lining they discovered through the process. "We were stuck at home. We were supposed to be on tour with The Pretenders and everything got shut down. So we just thought, 'Why not?' And we also made the record for half the price. ... We spent half the money, so we got a blessing from it."

"It will never be the same," vocalist Arnel Pineda chimes in with a laugh. "So we'll do the same thing again to save money, right?"

Creatively, the band drew on both past and present experiences while striving to stay true to the heart of what fans have come to know and love about them.

"I feel that we encompassed like a lot from Infinity to where we are now in this album," says Schon, referencing Journey's 1978 full-length featuring their first Billboard Hot 100 hit, "Wheel in the Sky."

"It's very diverse, it's very musical," he continues. "I’m happy with that. I think it really represents that band well."

In 2023, Journey will celebrate 50 years in the biz. To commemorate their golden anniversary, the group has planned a slew of upcoming performances into the years ahead, including stadium shows and -- in their words: "More pyro!" and "Firing bombs onstage right, bro!"

With more than 100-million records sold, 19 Top 40 singles and 25 Gold and Platinum albums under their belts, Journey remains one of the best-selling bands of all-time.

Pineda has been a part of that success for 15 years after replacing lead singer Steve Perry in 2007. The 54-year-old says his life went "from black to white" when joining the group. "These guys, I owe so much to them," he says.

As for whether they would bring back former band members Perry and Gregg Rolie for the anniversary shows, Schon is open to the possibility.

"I think that those two guys were a big part of the band," he says, "and I think that, you know, if the city permits, I think the fans would overall love it."

Just last week, Journey rocked two of four planned performances from July 15-23 at Resorts World Theater in Las Vegas alongside Violution Orchestra. Only ET was with them for the soundcheck.

"So much came to life with that orchestra," gushes drummer Deen Castronovo. "I mean, they were already beautiful songs and they have such a life of their own. But when you get that orchestra, it's so lush, man. I mean, it's amazing sounding. It really is."

Journey has announced dates for its Freedom Tour 2022.

The trek supports its forthcoming new album, also called “Freedom,” and includes two stops in Northern California.

These local pop-rock heroes are set to bring their platinum-plus-selling catalog — which includes such hits as “Lights,” “Any Way You Want It,” “Faithfully,” “Don’t Stop Believin'” and many, many more — to Chase Center in San Francisco on March 31 and Golden 1 Center in Sacramento on April 1.

Tickets go on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. Nov. 19 at ticketmaster.com . There is also a presale for Citi credit card owners that runs 10 a.m. Nov. 16 to 10 p.m. Nov. 18 (see www.citientertainment.com for details).

Billy Idol is the opening act Feb. 22-April 5 — which includes the Chase and Golden 1 dates — with Toto stepping into that role as of April 7.

“It’s that time — time to get back to where we are used to being — on stage,” says Journey guitarist Neal Schon. “We are looking forward to shifting into high gear and bringing you the best show possible. The band is running on all 12 cylinders and very excited.”

Of course, some fans might be wondering who is actually in the band at this point — given that there have been some significant personnel changes over the years. Notably, bassist and drummer Steve Smith were reportedly fired last year after what was described as a failed coup attempt .

The band’s current lineup is Schon, keyboardist Jonathan Cain, lead vocalist Arnel Pineda, keyboardist Jason Derlatka and drummer Deen Castronovo.

Journey has also announced a six-show Las Vegas residency, Dec. 1-11 at the Theater at Virgin Hotels.

Steve Perry Gives His Honest Opinion on New JOURNEY Singer Arnel Pineda

  • August 20, 2021
  • 1 minute read

journey tour 2021 steve perry

During a recent conversation with SiriusXM, classic Journey vocalist Steve Perry talked about the band’s new singer Arnel Pineda , who’s been a member of the fold since 2007.

Steve reached the topic while discussing Journey ‘s 2017 Rock Hall induction, saying (via Blabbermouth ):

“When I walked out there, that was a real thrill. They had a whole worked-up thing – they had a big teleprompter, and I said, ‘F that.’ I pulled out my piece of paper. I said, ‘I got some things to talk about here,’ and I just sort of did my thing. The fans, they were so wonderful.”

Asked on why he didn’t perform at the ceremony, Steve replied:

“I’m not in the band. I haven’t been in the band for quite some time. Arnel’s been in the band for almost 10 years, I think. He’s a sweet kid – he’s a wonderful kid. He sings his heart out every night. It’s his gig.

“There was a gentleman who we recently lost named Harry, part of the management team. Harry was there with me and he said, ‘Steve, listen, I don’t know if you know, but Arnel’s running up and down the halls. He heard you’re here, backstage.’

“I said, ‘Well, where is he?’ He said, ‘I think he’s outside.’ I said, ‘Okay, I’ll come out.’ I walked out and he was there, and he comes up to me… there was something endearing about the way he looked at me. He was meeting, like, a grandfather. [Laughs] He’s got the gig. It’s his gig. He’s doing great.”

Bring Steve back, ideots

the idiot is the one who can’t spell idiot

Why couldn’t Paul Rogers be a man like Steve Perry. Paul treated Brian Howe like sh*t.

Maybe he is not as good as Arnel’s voice almost copied almost same voice of Steve Perry that’s all I can say

Savage!!!!!😂😂😂

Both ” Arnel and Steve, and add, ” Taka” the lead singer from,” One O.K. Rock” all three would put on the show of shows!

He really is an edyot…

You’re damn right😁🤪.

You re very right!

Hey Andy, Speaking of IDIOTS!!

Bring back Steve Perry to the group so that Arnel may have substitute for vocal …just like john lennon paul mc cartney combination 🙏🥰💥

Steve doesn’t want to come back. He walked and was done with band. Why don’t you go back to an old job? Idiot

Steve can’t sing anymore. How he can do the things you want?

FUNNY HE JUST CAME OUT WITH A NEW AULBUM . HE CAN’T SING. LMFAO

welll idiot steve does not want back if he did he would be sooooo your the idiot idiot

Steve knew he can’t bring back the voice where the Journey was once before..Great that he recognize Arnel as the new lead singer of the band

Lmafol, how you spell Capital I•D•I•O•T🤣🤣🤣

Before I die, I would love to see the original Steve Perry and Journey together performing we need to do

Are you kidding me? Steve Perry- what grace and dignity you bring with this. Well done. Clearly your spirit, your conscience, is every bit as beautiful as your voice. ???

Got to love a class act like Steve Perry much love and respect ?

YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT AND i JUST MET SOMEBODY WHO MET Steve Perry AND SAID HE WAS GREAT AND HUMBLE GUY AND VERY HUMOROUS.

Well done, Steve.

Awe yes, but he’ll never ever be you❤️

Steve Perry can never be replaced!

And can never sing his song exactly the same as what he did when he was at his prime with the band… that’s why he will never want to come back because he can’t do the same thing as what he did before like what arnel do at the present.

I sew him in concert 3 years ago and he was amazing Steve you will allways be number 1 but agree with Arnel is amazing Think journey is in good hands with him I would of like to seen you perform at the rock roll hall fame cearmoney but I think you were varry kind to say this is arnel crow dosin,t want to over well him I think you made a great choice but thir will allways be 1 Steve parry and that’s you. I’m going see them again next month with billy idol I can’t wait.

No one’s trying to replace Steve. He is Steve Perry. He is Arnel Pineda. Immature ppl don’t get it.

ABSOLUTELY CORRECT, DID YOU SEE ARNEL PINEDA FACE OF APPRECIATION WHEN THEY MET BACKSTAGE AT THE AWARDS. ARNEL SHOULD HAVE BEEN DOWN ON THE STAGE DURING THE AWARDS SHOW TOO, BUT HE THOUGHT BECAUSE IT WAS FOR THE ORIGINAL GROUP ONLY. HONESTLY IT SHOULD NOT HAVE MATTER, ARNEL IS THE MAN FOR JOURNEY NOW. THERE IS ROOM FOR A NEW HISTORY MAKING MOMENT FOR TWO FRONT MEN FOR JOURNEY AND THIS WILL BRING ON TOGETHER LEGIONS OF NEW FANS FOR JOURNEY OF BOTH MEN AND EVEN THE UNDECIDED UNDER ONE UMBRELLA TO SQUASH THE DEBATE ON WHOSE BETTER.

DID YOU SEE THE REACTION OF ADMIRATION FOR STEVE PERRY FROM ARNEL PINEDA WHO COVERS STEVE PERRY MUSIC DURING HIS YOUTH AND NOBODY HAS DONE IT BETTER THAN HIM AND i HAVE TRIED MYSELF AS MY VOCALS JUST DON’T MAKE THE GRADE TO COME CLOSE TO THE LIVING LEGEND. IF JOURNEY DON’T JUMP ON A HISTORY MAKING MOMENT TO HAVE TWO GREATIST FRONTMEN TO HAVE LED JOURNEY INTO THE FUTURE SOMETHINING IS WRONG IF YOU CAN’T GET THESE TWO TO WORK TOGETHER. SEAL THE LEGACY WITH AN ENTIRE DUET OF THESE TWO ON ANOTHER REBIRTH OF JOURNEY…WE ALL NEED A NEW FRONTEIR. WE HAVE TWO SUPERHEROES FOR JOURNEY. MAKE BOTH OF THEM A LEGEND BY HAVING THE ONLY GROUP TO EVER HAVE TWO FRONTMEN ACTUALLY WORK TOGETHER. UNLIKE THE FAILURE OF VAN HALEN WITH SAMMY HAGAR AND DAVID LEE ROTH. THAT WAS OIL AND WATER MIX.

Perry isn’t coming back. Isn’t that obvious? He felt he was screwed/betrayed. Schon mentions trying to communicate with Perry, just to say hi. Perry won’t answer. Does that sound like someone who would want to return even if the offer was made?

Every time someone says “Bring back Perry!” I just shake my head.

STEVE WOULD COMEBACK IF IT WAS WORTH SAVING JOURNEY, BUT AS HE SAID IT IS ARNEL TIME TO SHINE TO CARRY JOURNEY. ARNEL HAS PROVEN HIMSELF AS THE FAN HAS APPROVED HIM MUCH BETTER THAN THE PAST REPLACEMENT WHO DID A DECENT JOB BUT NOT THE POINT WHERE THEY MATCHED OR EVEN CAME CLOSE TO STEVE VOCALS THE WAY ARNEL VOCALS SOUNDS SO ORIGINALLY CLOSE. WHY WOULD STEVE WANT TO COMEBACK UNLESS THEY INVITE HIM BACK TO PERFORM WHICH JOURNEY MEMBERS SHOULD HAVE NO PROBLEM LETTING STEVE PERFORM LIVE WHENEVER HE WANTS TO PERFORM AGAIN. IF THIS IS SO TO HAVE TWO OF THE GREATEST FRONTMEN TO REVIVE A GROUP FOR AN EVEN LONGER LONGEVITY FOR FUTURE FANS.

Journey is a great group band but who run the group is stupid. ..we filipinos dont need journey for ARNEL PINEDA..we LOVE ARNEL PINEDA with his GREAT TALENT and his GREAT VOICE n SKILL…if there is no stupidity @ journey why steve perry left the group …🤨🤔

I WANT TO SAY THAT I LOVED HIS STREET TALK SOLO MUSIC AND HIS NEWEST ONE HE RELEASING TO WHAT i HEAR STILL CLASSIC STEVE PERRY. YOU CAN RELATE TO THE WORDS HE WRITE OR SING WHAT WAS WRITTEN FOR HIM. EITHER WAY HIS MUSIC IS ALWAYS GREAT.

Why didnt axl join journey during the nevermind days?

Steve Perry is a real gentleman. I salute him for speaking his heart out.

Schon Lechon is a devil in disguise. He must change his contaminated heart and mind before the Journey becomes NOBODY LIKE HIM.

you are the only ones who think that someone will replace steve even arnel doesn’t think like that infact arnel’s favorite singer is steve perry and he never thinks that he is replacing steve, the only problem is you narrow minded journey fans.

I can’t agree more bro. , a lot of people just keep on complaining and comparing between the which is really non-sense, Steve is Steve no matter what same as Arnel. They are unique in their own way in my opinion. It’s just plain stupid a lot of fans out there keep bashing Arnel for what he is, in reality Arnel has been with the Journey longer than Steve! Since Arnel took over as the front man I think he did the Journey a big favor in joining them as they can’t find any replacement until they discover Arnel on his Youtube channel.

You are one of the greatest artists Please come back to the world The one and only…..no replica No one can ever replace you

Love always B From Canada 🇨🇦

J Cain once said Arnel is not filling in Perry’s shoes. Arnel got his own shoes that shines.

Steve Perry is one of a kind a class act and amazing performer to this day i listen to Journey when Steve Perry sang

THE ONLY SATAN IN THE GROUP IS SCHION. WHO FEELS HE CAN MAKE JOURNEY ALIVE AS IT WERE IF NOT WTHOUT HIM. THANKS TO ARNEL, SCHION WOULD HAVE BEEN IN A NURSING HOME ON ROCKING CHAIR ROCKING HIS WAY TO OBLIVION. SO WATCH UR MOUTH SCHION

People, note that, Arnel Pineda did not replace Steve Perry he replace or took over the position as the lead singer.

Steve Perry really handled that well. Arnel really admires Perry and knows that he’s a legend. Star struck. Steve Perry is not coming back to Journey and can you blame him? It’s a drama and a mess of a band.

Jrny has always been evolving their music, line up ect. Perry was okay with it till it was his turn to take a pause He could have came back after his hiking accident but he didn’t So they moved on and have done well

Steve is Steve and Arnel is Arnel, both are great singers and should not be a topic for a battle of comparison. Steve Perry is done doing Journey and he won’t be back and that’s all there is to it. The international success is just the icing on Arnel’s cake, but with or without Journey he is doing well as a recording artist with his original band “The Zoo”. That “Bring Back Steve Perry” bandwagon is just very immature and silly, to say the least.

Everyone knows that nobody could ever be a “Steve Perry” However, Arnel Pineda—- I must say that you are very impressive and I love the way you came in and Rocked every single Journey song! Arnel, you’re amazingly BLESSED with a powerhouse of a voice, a great demeanor, and swag outta this world! I definitely am super happy that Journey continues!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JOURNEY’S STEVE PERRY!!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JOURNEY'S STEVE PERRY!!!

Happy 72nd birthday today (January 22nd) to former- Journey frontman, the great Steve Perry . 2021 finds Perry riding high on the success of his fall 2018 comeback album, Traces , which is his first Top 10 solo debut. The album entered the Billboard 200 Albums Chart at Number Six and the magazine's Current Rock Album Chart at Number Two.

Last month, Steve Perry released a revamped version of the Traces album, titled, Traces: Alternate Versions And Sketches .

Traces marked a long awaited return from Perry, who is best remembered for his tenure in Journey in which he wrote or co-wrote such standards as "Don't Stop Believin'," "Any Way You Want It," "Who's Crying Now?" "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)," "When You Love A Woman," "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin,'" "Open Arms," "Be Good To Yourself," "Stone In Love," "Still They Ride," "Feeling That Way," and "Lights." Perry scored a solo Top 10 hit with 1984's "Oh, Sherrie," which peaked at Number Two.

Journey's last album with Steve Perry was 1996's Trial By Fire , which reunited the classic Escape/Frontiers lineup of Neal Schon on guitar, Ross Valory on bass, Jonathan Cain on keyboards, and Steve Smith on drums. The album peaked at Number Three on the Billboard 200 charts — with its single, "When You Love A Woman" hitting Number One on the magazine's Adult Contemporary chart. Perry left Journey in 1998 rather than be forced into hip-surgery so that the band could tour behind Trial By Fire . He briefly reunited with the band onstage in 2017 to make an acceptance speech during their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction.

Steve Perry made headlines back in 2014 by performing encore cameos at concerts by alternative band Eels in Los Angeles, California; Washington, D.C.; and St. Paul, Minnesota. The rock world began buzzing over a Perry comeback — or a possible return to fronting Journey — after his show stealing renditions of such favorites as "Open Arms" and "Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin'."

Last year, former-Journey bandmate Neal Schon offered an invitation for Perry to join his side band Journey Through Time onstage during their then-upcoming Northern California gigs. In October 2018, during a chat with Rolling Stone , Perry made it clear that despite Schon's frequent offers, he's choosing to pass on working with him, explaining, "I’m not sure that’s possible without stirring up hopes of a (band) reunion. Please listen to me. I left the band 31 f***ing years ago, my friend. You can still love someone, but not want to work with them. And if they only love you because they want to work with you, that doesn’t feel good to me."

Steve Perry recalled joining Journey in 1977 during the recording of the following year's Infinity album and partnering with Neal Schon: ["I certainly was the new kid on the block when I joined them, but I was okay with that — bring it on! And wasn't afraid of reachin' and I think we pushed each other. The more I would reach, the more I was demanding on him to do something and the more he would come up with things, the more I'd be demanding him to come up with something that would work with him. It was a very important driving force."] SOUNDCUE (:19 OC: . . . important driving force)

Steve Perry told us that the passage of time only further solidifies his opinion of how incredible Journey was during its heyday: ["What a great band we once were. What a great band. I think the older get the more I'm able to look back at the forest now, 'cause I certainly walked out of the trees. I think everybody was just following their heart and their nose and following that lead. Just doing what we do. We're a band . We record, we rock, we instinctually reach for what we believe's a good idea — and argue about stuff, agree, disagree and move forward. And we were just crankin'."] SOUNDCUE (:25 OC: . . . were just crankin')

When we last caught up with Steve Perry, he told us it was a long road– both personally and creatively — to get from the end of Journey to where he is today: ["When I left the group, 31 years ago — in about February of '87, I think — when I first said, 'I'm walkin' away,' I lost my passion for it and that was frightening to me because I discovered a passion for music and singing when I was, like, six, seven years old; and it had never left me, and it had gone away and that scared the hell outta me. So, I knew the only thing I could do was stop . After an incredible, amazing ride — being in a band like Journey, it was like being in a satellite circling the Earth for a while. It was time to come down and land in my hometown again and reconnect."] SOUNDCUE (:32 OC: . . . again and reconnect)

We asked Steve Perry if it seems like he's coming back to an entire new world — or does the music business feel like home sweet home to him: ["I don't know if its coming back into anything familiar because it seems like everything's changed. I've changed, the world is different, the whole process is different — but somewhat the same, y'know, as far as trying to let people know that I have new music. But, it seems so different, y'know? It really does; we have an Internet now, we have downloading, we have streaming, we have not a lot of retail out there, and so now, more importantly that ever — and I feel personally good about this — it's more about the music now , because of the change of the world than ever before."] SOUNDCUE (:32 OC: . . . than ever before)

The ongoing massive success of "Don't Stop Believin'" doesn't surprise Steve Perry, who told us he was aware of the sing's potential by the reaction it received in the concert halls: ["It's a funny thing, because though those other songs were hits — bonafide radio hits — whenever we played 'Don't Stop Believin'; if you see the Journey DVD live, it's 1981 Houston, it's called. If you see that DVD that was filmed in Houston back then, that song gets a response like it's getting now to the live audience. So my, point is, during the live shows that song always got a great response — it just wasn't a radio hit."] SOUNDCUE (:25 OC: . . . a radio hit)

Steve Perry: ‘My Heart Bleeds Daily to Be in Front of People And to Sing for Them’

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

Steve Perry has kept a low public profile ever since he shared a lockdown rendition of the 1963 Beach Boys classic “In My Room” in April, but he tells Rolling Stone that since that time, he’s been busy creating new music. “I have a studio and I’m always writing and always recording stuff,” he says. “I have lots of music, so much stuff.”

First up is an acoustic version of his 2018 comeback LP Traces that he plans to release on December 4th. “It’s eight songs from the Traces record done acoustically and I’m really proud of it,” he says. “It’s called Traces Alternate Versions and Sketches . I cut the vinyl in Abbey Road. I’m really pleased with the sonics and I’m really pleased with the simplicity of the song and the lyric and the chords, which is basically what it’s stripped down to.”

Perry dropped out of the public eye in 1998 when he was sidelined by a hip injury and Journey opted to hire a new vocalist to take his place. “I had my time,” he says, “and I was very pleased with all the history I was fortunate to be around and I was proud of my musical contributions to any of it.”

He was drawn back to music after losing girlfriend Kelly Nash to breast cancer in 2012. “I made a promise to her that I would not go back into hibernation,” he says. “If something was going to happen to her, she asked that I wouldn’t do that because she felt it would make everything for naught. Those were her words. I kept that promise.”

He released Traces in 2018 and went on an extensive media tour to support it, but he didn’t play any live shows. Perry last toured in 1995 and the only time he’s played to a live audience since then took place in 2014 when he joined the band Eels at three shows.

“E [Eels frontman Mark Oliver Everett] and I became friends and he kept busting my balls saying, ‘When are you going to come out and just sing a couple of songs on our little tour?'” Perry recalls. “We’d always laugh, but I’d always go to his rehearsals because I love the band. He said, ‘Is this the year you’re going to do it?’ I said, ‘OK, what do you want to do?’ We worked up a bunch of songs and lowered the keys so I’d feel comfortable.”

The first appearance took place May 25th, 2014, at the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul, Minnesota. Perry joined Eels for their original tune “It’s a Motherfucker” before closing the show with the Journey tunes “Open Arms” and “Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin’.”

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

“Oh, my God,” Perry says as he thinks back to that night. “I forgot what it was like to be in front of people. I had forgotten that this voice [I have onstage] doesn’t belong to me. In a studio, I can probably get 80 or 90 percent of it. But that extra 10 or 20 percent only happens in front of a crowd.”

The three Eels appearances raised fan expectations that Perry might finally return to the road. It hasn’t happened so far, but the singer says that a tour remains a real possibility. “It’s always been on my mind,” he says. “My heart bleeds daily to be in front of people and to sing for them.”

One thing holding him back is the physical toll any tour would take on his body. “I’ve got some physical injuries from touring,” he says. “It’s a tough thing, touring. People don’t realize. It’s like sports. I’m watching baseball these days and there’s injuries. People’s backs and necks start to go out. It’s a young man’s game, but I do miss it.”

During Perry’s long absence from the road, Journey reinvented themselves as a touring powerhouse, especially after Arnel Pineda took over on vocals in 2008. But it’s been a contentious journey marked by persistent band infighting. Earlier this year, the band parted ways with drummer Steve Smith and bassist Ross Valory after a business dispute over the band’s copyright.

“I have no clue what that’s all about,” Perry says when the matter comes up. “I’ve been out of that band since May of 1998.”

When told that fans continue to fixate on his tenure in the band and pray for some sort of reconciliation, he laughs. “I don’t know what people think rock & roll is about,” he says. “Are we supposed to be like Bo Peep, sheep herders that are kind and loving? No. We bump heads like motherfuckers. But from that comes beautiful music like ‘Open Arms’ and other songs.”

Still, fans will likely never let go of the fantasy that everything can go back to the way it was in 1981 when it seemed like the band was in harmony and singing “Kumbaya” together offstage. “I don’t understand what these people base their thinking on,” he says. “There never was any ‘Kumbaya’ with us. But were the Chicago Bulls singing ‘Kumbaya’? How about the [San Francisco] 49ers with Bill Walsh? What are we talking about here?”

For now, Perry is focusing strictly on his own career, far away from the battles of Journey. “The acoustic Traces is going to close the Traces chapter,” he says. “Then I’m opening up another chapter next year at some point.”

ABOUT JOURNEY

Since the group's formation in 1973, JOURNEY has earned 19 top 40 singles, 25 gold and platinum albums, and has sold over 100 million albums globally. Their "Greatest Hits" album is certified 15 times-platinum, making JOURNEY one of the few bands to ever have been diamond-certified, and their song "Don't Stop Believin'" has been streamed over one billion times alone.

JOURNEY was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2017, and 2018's co-headlining tour with DEF LEPPARD was the band's most successful tour to date, landing them in the Top 10 year-end touring chart with more than 1 million tickets sold, and earning them the prestigious Billboard "Legends Of Live" touring award. March 2019 saw the release of "Escape & Frontiers Live In Japan", a live DVD/CD set from their concert at the Budokan in Tokyo featuring the band's first-ever performances of the albums "Escape" and "Frontiers" in their entirety. JOURNEY has also received a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame and were inducted into the Hollywood Bowl Hall Of Fame. Additionally, the band is the subject of the award-winning documentary "Don't Stop Believin': Everyman's Journey" about the band's resurgence upon adding Arnel Pineda as lead singer after JOURNEY Founder, Neal Schon discovered the Philippines native on YouTube.

The members of TOTO are celebrating an accomplishment few bands have achieved in the modern era. Cumulative streams of the ensemble’s repertoire

now exceed 3 billion plays. Amongst the most listened to recordings, “Africa” accounts for over one billion streams at Spotify alone. This year the song was recertified by the RIAA 8X Platinum.

Over the past decade, the band has had a major renaissance in popularity like few bands at this point in their career. The audience is truly multi-generational, becoming younger with each passing year. Joining Steve Lukather and Joseph Williams are band members bassist John Pierce (Huey Lewis and The News), drummer Robert “Sput” Searight (Ghost-Note, Founding member Snarky Puppy, Snoop Dogg), keyboardist Dominique “Xavier” Taplin (Prince, Ghost-Note), multi-instrumentalist / vocalist Warren Ham (Ringo Starr) and keyboardist / background vocalist Steve Maggiora,. This line-up marks the fifteenth incarnation of Toto in consideration of band members or sidemen who joined or exited. Individually and collectively, few have had a larger imprint on pop culture than the members of TOTO. The family tree can be heard on an astonishing 5000 albums that together amass a sales history of a half a billion albums. Amongst these recordings, NARAS applauded the performances with hundreds of Grammy nominations.

With now 45+ years together and literally thousands of credits, including the biggest selling album of all time: Michael Jackson’s Thriller, and accolades to their names, TOTO remains one of the top selling touring and recording acts in the world. They are the benchmark by which many artists base their sound and production, and they continue to transcend the standards set by the entire music community, being simply synonymous with musical credibility. They are pop culture and are one of the few 70’s bands that have endured the changing trends and styles continuing to remain relevant.

Former Journey frontman Steve Perry back with new holiday album

  • Gary Graff, special to cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Steve Perry’s been making up for some lost time.

Journey’s key frontman (from 1977-98) was largely out of sight after leaving the band, finally emerging in 2018 with his third solo album, “Traces.” It debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard 200 and was followed by a holiday EP, “Silver Bells,” in 2019 and then “Traces (Alternative Versions & Sketches)” last year.

Perry went back to the Yule this year with “The Season,” an eight-track set that finds the 74-year-old channeling influences such as Nat King Cole, Smokey Robinson, Bing Crosby and others he heard when he was young. “The Season” has been well-received, bowing at No. 4 on the Holiday Albums chart, and Perry says from his home in San Diego that we should not stop believin’ we’ll be hearing more from him soon...

What inspired you to do a holiday album?

Perry: Y’know, last season was such an empty Christmas because it was filled with more anxiety than spirit of Christmas. I could not access the fantasies of believing in Christmas and what it was, or even some of the food flavors that used to bring me back to the spirit of Christmas. I couldn’t access it through the music I love. Honestly, I had a hard time even listening to my favorite traditional Christmas songs last year because I felt the anxiety of not being able to feel it because we were all going through such a pandemic Christmas.

So how did you get it back?

Perry: Come around May and June of this year, I started playing around with the idea of doing some more Christmas music, just for fun. So, my keyboardist Dallas (Kruse) and I started to, across the Internet, exchange piano tracks, and I started singing and sent them back to him and he put some bass parts on it, and we made comments on the phone, and it turned into this. I was needing to sing these songs, for me. It was touching the reverence of their original spirit that I think got me back in the Christmas spirit, to be honest. I realized how important they are when I started singing them.

There are so many holiday classics, of course. How did you choose?

Perry: I narrowed it down to songs that meant the most to me as a child and conjured up the spirit of Christmas the most. I felt a certain respect that I had to pay to their original melodic structure, their original simplicity. I didn’t want to step too far outside the boundaries of their timeless qualities, but I still wanted to have some fun with them. I tried to step out of it, slightly, with who I am vocally but staying within the boundaries of what they have to say and how they say it. That was my purpose.

So, will you throw “The Season” on for yourself this Christmas?

Perry: (laughs) Hmmm...I don’t know. I’m gonna have some egg nog, with a little ice and some fresh nutmeg for starters, and the quiet of the fireplace burning -- with no media playing, and probably no music, to be honest, just me and the lady sitting there talking and having reminiscent thoughts about her life and her Christmases and mine. And this Christmas I’m not going to chase after what I call the portal of food. I use food in the holidays as a portal to access memories long past, but I never can recreate the flavors my grandmother used to make. I tried that for Thanksgiving recently, and I failed miserably. I can’t make that stuffing like she did or anything like that. So, I think I’m gonna have a grilled cheese sandwich -- some really beautiful Irish cheese on sourdough bread with some good dill pickles and grill it slow in lots of butter. There ain’t nothing better than that, come on!

Do you think immersing yourself in this music will make an impact on your own songwriting?

Perry: I think it has. I’ve written two originals since then, so I think you’re right -- it has left a mark of musical sort of spirit that these songs had. So, I have two originals already done and sitting there, but I’m not sure what’ll happen to them.

That begs the question -- what’s next?

Perry: Well, I went down to my studio here in San Diego -- it’s kind of a bunker -- two days ago and started looking around at all the sketches and all the songs I’ve already started. Some are almost complete, just need to be mixed. The good news is I have too much original material, so many things to finish. I just hope people out there want to keep hearing some material from me -- but I’m gonna finish this stuff, no matter what. I just don’t want to be forcing myself anywhere. If I sing and people like it, then I’ll do it.

What people really want, of course, is to see you on stage again. How ‘bout it?

Perry: You know, Uncle Steve is no spring chicken here. But I would love nothing more than to be on a stage again. I had such a good time walking on stage with the Eels a few years back (2014). That was such a thrill. I do think there’s a component of my voice that I can’t find unless I’m in front of people. I can sit in the studio and sing the hell out of whatever, but when I’m in front of people I know they bring something I can’t’ find unless I’m in front of them. I almost get this feeling that my voice belongs to them, and I’m just bring it out there for them. There’s a symbiotic relationship that, without them, I can’t’ find it. So, I’d love to do that again.

What about a residency somewhere that would cut down on the wear and tear of travel?

Perry: That exactly has been proposed to me in different locations -- one in New York, one was proposed in Vegas awhile back. It’s been discussed but nothing has been put together yet. I’m a spur-of-the-moment guy, so you never know. You might just see me in a nightclub singing a couple of Christmas songs. It has to be fun. I don’t need the money. I just want to have some fun. That’s what it’s about.

Steve Perry

Steve Perry's latest album is a holiday collection called "The Season."

Herbie Herbert, who was Journey’s original manager, passed away in October. You stayed in touch and friendly with him, didn’t you?

Perry: For about the last year and a half I was in touch with him, yeah. We had some of the greatest conversations. He changed my life. He gave me a chance. He heard my demo tape and believed in me, and his wish was to convince the band, Journey, to give me a chance to prove myself worthy and they gave me that chance. He saw that they needed something and convinced them I was that something. In one of those recent conversations, about four months ago, he said, “All I can tell you is when I heard you sing with that band, it was instant chemistry.” I’ll forever be indebted to Herbie Herbert.

Do you still feel a great connection to the Journey songs?

Perry: Oh yeah, especially now. When I hear ‘em on the radio, I go, “Man -- that’s pretty good!” (laughs) I mean, the further you get away from the forest, the more you can see it. When you’re standing in it, it’s hard to see it. But as years go by and you get to that point where you’re further away, it looks pretty great.

S o, it’s been 40 years since the “Escape” album and “Don’t Stop Believin’.” Can you believe the life that song, in particular, has had?

Perry: No. (laughs) I mean, honest to God, no. I wish that I Could tell you that I had some foresight, but I didn’t. Every song we wrote got the same attention, the same reaching, emotionally, for what it could be, performance and lyric-wise. So “Don’t Stop Believin’ " was just another one, and it’s been embraced by a whole new generation and then a whole new generation and now another generation. I just feel so fortunate that’s happened.

Journey to celebrate 50th anniversary with 30 shows in 2024: See where they're headed

journey tour 2021 steve perry

Journey is continuing the celebration of its five-decade career with a run of 2024 shows.

The 50 th Anniversary Freedom Tour kicks off Feb. 9 in Biloxi, Mississippi and will play 30 dates in North America through April 29 in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. local time on Sept. 29 via ticketmaster.com.

Toto, which supported Journey on their tour earlier this year to celebrate their "Freedom" album, will again join Journey founder, guitarist Neal Scho n, keyboardist Jonathan Cain, lead singer Arnel Pineda, keyboardist Jason Derlatka, drummer Deen Castronovo and bassist Todd Jensen as show openers.

Journey's tour finds the Rock & Roll Hall of Famers tearing through a set list of anthems including "Any Way You Want It," "Faithfully," "Be Good to Yourself" and, of course, "Don't Stop Believin'."

When "Freedom" arrived in July 2022, Schon told USA Today that the album title was originally tapped for the band's 1986 release, "Raised on Radio," but then-singer Steve Perry didn't like it, "so we sat on it for many years … when we were tossing around album titles said, why not just call the whole thing 'Freedom?' It's for the times right now."

Schon was also sanguine when reflecting on the band’s legacy.

"It’s quite an accomplishment and I’m very proud of what we’ve done and how we’ve gotten through emotional and personnel changes and survived," he said. "It’s pretty mind-boggling but also a lot of hard work."

Why Some People Are Saying Steve Perry Will Be Back with Journey in 2024

I want to be 100% clear and upfront about this article.

This is NOT an announcement that Steve Perry is going to be singing with Journey when the band plays the Las Cruces Pan Am Center next year on March 21st.

But there are A LOT of rumors swirling around. Here are the top reasons people are saying Perry and the band might be reuniting.

1.) IT IS THEIR 50th ANNIVERSARY

Journey has announced their tour schedule for next year as the “Journey 50th Anniversary Tour 2024”. That’s a major milestone and, let’s be honest, there probably won’t be a 75th-anniversary tour. If they’re going to finally pull this trigger, next year would be the year to do it.

2.) PERRY JUST DROPPED A BUNCH OF LAWSUITS AGAINST THE BAND

Last year in September of 2022, Steve Perry filed a lawsuit against his former bandmates over 20 Journey songs that Perry was claiming as registered trademarks. It was quietly reported  that Perry had dropped that lawsuit.

Maybe it DOESN’T mean anything, but plenty of fans are taking it as a sign that a reunion is in the works.

3.) NEAL SCHON SAYS HE IS DOWN FOR A REUNION

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight in July guitarist and co-founder Neal Schon said he was “open to the idea” of reuniting with Perry. Shon said that he and Perry were “talking and getting to know each other again”.

VERY interesting!

4.) SOMEBODY IN THE LOOP TOLD ME AS MUCH

I can’t name any names here (I promised I wouldn’t)… but somebody “in the know” intimated to me that a Perry/Journey reunion was “ being talked about”.

This is STILL just a rumor at this point but my source told me, “ They’ve been talking back and forth about how they might make this happen”.

Again, this is not an announcement or even a prediction. But, as the old song says, “Don’t stop believing” !

Former Journey Singer Steve Perry Shocked by Recent “Don’t Stop Believin” Milestone

S pending over a decade with the band, Steve Perry helped propel Journey into the spotlight with albums like Infinity , Departure , and Frontiers . Although leaving the group in the 1980s, he eventually returned in 1995. He was even inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Journey. Considered “The Voice” by Jon Bon Jovi, Perry recently shared his astonishment after Forbes listed the hit song “Don’t Stop Believin” as the “Biggest Song Of All Time.”

While the song is an 18-time-platinum-certified single, the announcement from Frobes caused even Perry to fall silent. Sharing the news on Instagram, Perry wrote,  “When this ‘Don’t Stop Believin”, ‘The Biggest Song of ALL Time’ article came out yesterday {3/19/24}I was so emotionally stunned. To be part of such a moment as this made me reflect on my parents.”

Taking a moment to honor his parents for supporting him along the way, Perry added,  “By that I mean, though I lost them both years ago, I was so happy for them because they are truly the reason this is happening. My dad was a singer and both of them were very musical. So on behalf of my Mom and Dad, I thank every one of you for so many years of support.”

Steve Perry Details Why “Don’t Stop Believin'” Was So Popular

Having discussed the iconic song over the decades, in 2009, Perry explained how he knew the potential behind “Don’t Stop Believin’” given the recreation of audiences with CBC’s Q . “When we were doing the song in 1981, I knew something was happening, but honestly, when I saw it in the film ‘Monster’ with Patty Jenkins, I started think, ‘Oh my goodness there’s really something.'”

Dissecting why the hit song connected with so many people, Perry stated, “The lyric is a strong lyric about not giving up, but it’s also about being young, it’s also about hanging out, not giving up and looking for that emotion hiding somewhere in the dark that we’re all looking for. It’s about having hope and not quitting when things get tough, because I’m telling you things get tough for everybody.”

Receiving over 30,000 likes, Journey co-founder, Neal Schon, commented on the post, writing, “That’s great Steve. God Bless. I myself reflect on the great time we had writing this song. Respectfully Neal Schon”.
