Leh and Ladakh

TripSavvy / Alicia Erikson

Leh is the most common entry point to India's far northern region of Ladakh. This remote place has become a popular tourist destination since Ladakh was opened to foreigners in 1974. It offers two of the world’s largest mountain ranges, alpine desert, and dry barren landscape full of historic Buddhist monasteries . Nature and adventure lovers will find excellent hiking and trekking opportunities around Leh. There are also many longer trekking trails to choose from, as well as white water rafting and travel on Khardung La, the world's highest motorable road. It's also possible to ride Bactrian camels in the Nubra Valley.

You can do as little or as much as you want there. It’s a magical place bordered by cool pine forest and the raging Beas River, which give it a special energy. Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand, bordered by Nepal and Tibet, and shadowed by towering Himalayan peaks, is full of unspoiled natural beauty. Ancient holy places, forests, and valleys, and an abundance of trekking options are some of the attractions that draw adventurers. The Valley of Flowers is a popular seasonal trek. This high-altitude Himalayan valley has around 300 different varieties of alpine flowers, which appear as a bright carpet of color against a mountainous snow-capped background. For a pristine mountain trek in Uttarakhand, head off the beaten path at Kalap.  If you'd prefer less strenuous activities, head to the hill station of Nainital, where you can go boating on Naini Lake, take nature walks, and go horse riding and rock climbing. Whitewater rafting and stand up paddle boarding are possible at Rishikesh.

Goa is the best alternative to the mountains for anyone looking for adventure and adrenaline in India. There are almost 100 operators to offer you just about every type of adventure activity imaginable, including water sports, go-karting, scuba diving and snorkeling, hiking, fishing, and dolphin (and crocodile!) sightseeing trips. The Goa Hiking Association organizes a major trekking program in October each year. The Goa Branch of the Youth Hostel Association of India also runs 9 day National Trekking Expeditions in Goa every December.

Fancy experiencing India on camel back or in a hot air balloon? Both are possible in the desert state of Rajasthan. Excellent desert camel safaris are offered in and around Jaisalmer and Bikaner. Alternatively, it's possible to go hot air ballooning in India around Jaipur, Pushkar, and Ranthambore National Park .

And, don't think you need water to go parasailing! Jeep-pulled parasailing now takes place in the Thar desert around Jaisalmer.

You can also go zip-lining with Mehrangarh Fort as the backdrop in Jodhpur, or zip-lining over 15th century Neemrana Fort Palace near Delhi.

The 10 Best Adventure Tours in India

Trekking in Stok Kangri, India

A thrill seeker will be spoilt for choice in India. From a snow leopard trail in the Hemis National Park in Ladakh to a motorcycle tour to Gurudongmar, the highest lake in India, and even an entertaining rickshaw challenge across the country, these are the 10 best adventure tours to book in India.

Stok kangri mountaineering expedition.

Stok Kangri is a perfect starting point for novice mountaineers. Not too technical, but still quite challenging, an expedition to this peak can be treated as an initial test before going on to conquer higher and more difficult mountains. But that doesn’t mean Stok Kangri is a cakewalk. As the mountain stands at an altitude of 20,128 feet (6,135 metres), the trek still requires great physical and mental stamina. The breathtaking scenery throughout the trip does make all the hard work worth it in the end. Try the eight-day expedition from Adventure Nation to experience the best of Stok Kangri.

Zip-lining over the Ganges River in Rishikesh

Rishikesh has become renowned as the yoga capital of the world, but people also flock to the holy town for its array of adventure sports. While river rafting is the most popular activity in Rishikesh, try something different during your visit and opt for zip-lining instead. Flying Fox is a tour operator that specialises in this particular sport, and at Rishikesh, they offer a thrilling 1,300-foot (396-metre) zip-line. For an hour, you can soak in the beautiful views of this Himalayan town while hanging 200 feet (61 metres) above the Ganges. It does not get more dramatic than this.

Kinner Kailash spiritual Parikrama trek

Kinner Kailash is a sacred mountain, revered by both the Hindus and the Buddhists. As it is with holy places, there are many fascinating legends attached with Kinner Kailash. It is also one of the more difficult pilgrimage treks in India, which means it’s an ideal journey for any adventure buff. Due to its spiritual nature, the parikrama (circumambulation of a religious place) trek is a bit different from other orthodox routes. Himalayan Frontiers provides a comprehensive two-week tour of Kinner Kailash, and the best time to take the trek is from June to October.

Sailing across the Brahmaputra River

The mighty Brahmaputra River flows across three countries: China, India and Bangladesh. In India, the river forms the very soul of the state of Assam. Aqua Terra provides a unique two-week tour across this river where you will alternate between riding on kayaks when on the water and on bicycles when on land. Some of the highlights of the trip will be a stopover at the Kaziranga National Park and an opportunity to camp on sandbars. The best memory from the journey, however, will be the view of the Brahmaputra during sunset.

Paragliding in Bir Billing

If you want to go paragliding in India, Bir Billing in Himachal Pradesh is the first place you should consider. It is, after all, the paragliding capital of the country. With the Billing Paragliding Association , you can choose to combine the high-flying activity with other adventure sports such as trekking, camping, rock climbing and rappelling. Mountain biking in Kerala

Kerala is a hugely popular destination for Ayurveda and yoga retreats. But even if you’re looking for rush rather than relaxation, the South Indian state does not disappoint. Kerala, known as ‘God’s Own Country’, is one of the most picturesque regions in India. Explore this landscape on a bike with a Mountain Bike Kerala tour. The undulating route, marked with steep cliffs at certain points, will test your biking skills to the fullest, while stunning views of lush tea gardens keep you company throughout. Maybe after all the physical activity, you can even check into a wellness retreat to revive those aching muscles.

Winter sports in Gulmarg

Every winter, Gulmarg in Jammu and Kashmir comes to life with ski enthusiasts from across the country making a beeline for the hill station. Gulmarg is a fantastic place which should be on the must-visit list of all those who are into winter sports. The only reason it isn’t as well known outside of India is probably due to the fact that Kashmir, one of the most beautiful places in the world, unfortunately, lies in a politically sensitive zone. Discover this untapped destination with Gulmarg Backcountry tours, which provides heliskiing and snowboarding adventures. They also have a ski school with internationally certified instructors.

Rickshaw Challenge

This next adventure is one that you’ll be hard-pressed to find anywhere else in the world. The Rickshaw Challenge allows you to explore the country in one of the most common modes of transport used by Indians. Unlike other races, the thrill does not lie in the speed since the auto-rickshaw can only travel at 60 kilometres per hour (37 mph) at best, but the delight is in experiencing the local culture in the most unique way imaginable. The one-of-a-kind package designed by Travel Scientists allows you to choose from five different routes, and they also let you customise your rickshaw any way you want. You will also be giving back to society with the Travel Scientists’ partnership with Round Table India charity.

Motorcycle tour in Sikkim

Recently, Sikkim has become a hot spot for motorcycle aficionados. The rugged mountain terrain, the winding roads and the scenic landscape of this small Himalayan state in the north-east region of India have all contributed to this growing affinity. Try a difficult but inspiring BB Line motorcycle tour to Gurudongmar, which is the highest lake in India. The stillness of the sacred lake at 17,800 feet (5,425 meters) high is an experience to behold. You will pass through hot springs, a rhododendron sanctuary and sparkling waterfalls and spend the night in village homestays for a truly local experience.

Extreme Adventure Tourism Picks Pace In India; Travellers And Stakeholders Weigh In

In India, extreme adventure tourism is picking up like never before. Travel+Leisure India & South Asia’s contributor catch up with travellers and stakeholders to understand this emerging industry.

A trend that is seeing a lot of interest in India and around the world is extreme tourism, a niche in the tourism industry involving travel to dangerous places or participation in dangerous events. Be it a trip to space or an expedition to the wreckage of the Titanic, adventurers are shelling out big bucks for that adrenaline rush.

Surge of Extreme Adventure Tourism in India

Beyond the ordinary.

Wind Foiling

While researching the trend of extreme adventure tourism, we came across an experience concept called The Edge of Space, certainly not for the faint-hearted. This entails flying to the edge of space in a MIG 29 fighter jet, undergoing 7G of G force and going up to a speed of Mach 1.7. Believe it or not, there is a travel company that offers this experience, at a hefty price tag of 20,000 euros (INR 18 lakh approx). Mit Bhatt, co-founder of experiential travel company The Grand Vacationist , says “We’ve had a customer do this experience. You need to fly to Russia to do it and you need a host of aviation and health clearances.”

Nishant Patel

Bhatt’s partner, Nishant Patel, also happens to be a world record holder for being the first person in the world to scuba cycle for 100 metres at a depth of 33 metres in six minutes 47 seconds. “As outrageous as it sounds, we’ve had customers ask us to help them set a record while they travel, and we can do that. We’ve even booked people into experiences where they walk on the wing of a World War II aircraft, while harnessed to it. Or HALO (high altitude, low opening) jumps from 30,000 ft, which entails a 75-second free fall before a parachute is deployed. This is usually done by armed forces, during war exercises, but some bold civilians do want to try it,” says Bhatt, who himself holds the record for the first Indian to fly highest and fastest to the edge of space .

A Grey Area

BASE jumping

This writer catches up with Sajid Chougle, who is a professional BASE jumper, of which, he tells us, there are just about seven in India. A BASE jumper is, as Chougle describes, “skydiving on steroids, where you jump off B (building), A (antenna), S (span i.e. bridges), E (earth i.e mountains) with just one parachute, sometimes legally, sometimes illegally.” Chougle hints that while there is increased interest in this extreme activity, there is a secret members’ club, of sorts, where you learn with experts, under the radar. “BASE jumping, solo and tandem, is an emerging trend in Norway and US. In India, most people who have done it have had some background in the armed forces, as they had access to high-altitude jumps. The rest of us are civilians. BASE jumping typically happens after you do a lot of skydives.”

New Business Opportunities

The rise of extreme sports in India not only gives adventure travellers more options but also creates a demand for small businesses. “Besides travellers, a lot of adventure-driven Indians are choosing to work in this industry because they see clear-cut career progression either as instructors or business owners. Moreover, a lot of urban Indians are choosing to move to outdoorsy locations to work in adventure sports,” says Jehan Driver, founder of Quest Adventure Sports Academy. Based in Rameswaram , Tamil Nadu, Driver’s adventure sports training academy welcomes travellers, amateurs, experts, and aspiring instructors of all proficiency levels to enroll in courses. “We are the only ones in India training people at wing foiling, which is a relatively new sport. We have also seen a major comeback of windsurfing, given the new styles of equipment and, of course, kite surfing, which is pretty huge in India right now,” says Driver, who also adds that a basic initiation course would last 10 to 15 hours, at a cost of approximately INR 4,000 per hour, followed by higher levels. Quest Adventure is particularly popular with sports enthusiasts who want to train themselves professionally for national and international championships like paddle boarding, sailing, kite surfing, or windsurfing.

Destination Showcase

Extreme Adventure Tourism

At the very core of any extreme or semi-extreme adventure activity is the idea of a destination showcase— to do something completely unusual and adventurous, while enjoying the natural beauty of a destination. We get chatting with Amit Kothari, founder of Goamit Holidays, where the idea is to merge adventure tourism with luxury. Kothari’s USP is to find the most offbeat, unexplored destinations in the country and then integrate some adventure element into an itinerary. “We’ve created a concept called the Padayatra, a new take on trekking. It is for those who are inclined toward the mountains. Travellers will walk from zone to zone, cook their own food, visit monasteries, and do everything on foot,” Kothari tells us. Similarly, he organises horseback itineraries from village to village in Rajasthan, or treks to the remotest parts of Ladakh like Puga Valley. Goamit also does five to six day moving camps, where luxury setups are transported along with the travellers, complemented by fine dining experiences, cultural immersions, and sports activities. He says that a six-day itinerary like this would cost approximately INR 60,000 per person.

Another extreme sport that is in focus, though it has been around for a while, is powered paragliding. This entails flying an ultralight motor in conjunction with a paraglider. On South Goa’s Colva beach, travel entrepreneur Ryan Pinto offers tourists a different way to experience Goa’s beaches. He founded his company Skywalker Adventures, three years ago, while he was a hobby practitioner of powered paragliding. “A lot of tourists would ask me for a flight as they wanted to see Goa’s beaches from a new perspective. That’s when I decided to do this professionally. Today, we see increased interest from young Indian professionals from cities like Mumbai, Pune, and Bengaluru, between the age groups of 20 and 45.”

In India, the idea of extreme adventure tourism, in its purest form, is resolutely in its nascent stage, but the next few years will see an explosion in this segment, in terms of consumers, service providers, and specialist-led businesses.

What is the future of adventure travel in india.

The Adventure Tour Operators Association of India (ATOAI) recently held its 14th annual convention in a remote valley in (south) eastern India, we were there to listen and learn.

ATOAI is a representative body of adventure tour operators of India. It acts as a mediator between the government and tour operators, recommending the government on best practices for conducting adventure tourism in the country. In September last year, it led a risk mitigation committee to suggest changes to preserve India’s outdoor heritage in a better way. It also published a handbook of guideline on best practices for adventure tour operators to follow.

The ATOAI event was held in Araku Valley, situated in the Eastern Ghats of India, in Andhra Pradesh, is known for its deep forests, ancient caves, coffee beans and most recently, hot air balloons. The region held its first ballooning festival, coinciding with the convention.

The Outdoor Journal attended some heated panel discussions during the convention and spoke to a number of established tour operators. Here is what we gleaned;

Adventure Travel is Gaining Prominence in India

“Adventure tourism is $0.5 trillion, and it is growing at a rate of 18% per year.”

In a presentation during the convention, Ashish Gupta, consulting CEO of Federation of Associations in Indian Tourism and Hospitality (FAITH) explained that the travel industry today is a $3 trillion direct business globally. That makes it one-tenth of the world economy. That also makes it bigger than the agricultural and manufacturing industries. “Out of this,” he said, “adventure tourism is $0.5 trillion, and it is growing at a rate of 18% per year.” The 2017 reports from ATTA suggest a growing trend as well .

In India, the adventure travel industry is gaining prominence. The ministry of tourism declared 2018 as the “year of adventure”. Adventure Travel and Trade Association (ATTA), a global body of adventure tour operators brought their annual AdventureNext event to India for the first time last December. The upcoming Pacific Asia Travel Association event in Uttarakhand in February has “adventure” as its theme. Needless to say, government bodies of the country are recognising the industry’s potential. However, ironically enough, the same state government also banned camping in certain regions of Uttarakhand, citing mass tourism as the problem, and rafting camps are no longer permitted along the Ganges. 2018 also witnessed a number of deaths, right from the forests of south India to the high passes of the Indian Himalaya. At least 40 were cited during presentations.

Some of the teething issues that came into the limelight were mass tourism, lack of entry barriers into the profession of adventure tourism, lack of access control into the outdoor spaces, an inability to cater to independent travellers, lack of women in the industry, lack of communication and general education about the outdoors to a growing young population, price wars…

Read about a ban on rafting and the poor governance in uttarakhand here ., lack of entry barriers into the profession, a.k.a, “anyone can become an adventure tour operator”.

“Currently there are no entry barriers. and that is our biggest problem”

Tourism is an unorganised sector in India. All one needs to start an outfit is a certificate of incorporation from the Registrar of Companies, Ministry of Corporate Affairs. Although the Ministry of Tourism and ATOAI have a screening process for recognising adventure outfits (ATOAI has a rigorous screening process for its “active” membership), one does not necessarily need to be recognised by either to run an adventure tour company.

A state government can, however, take measures to regulate the functioning of tourism in its region.

“Tourism is a state subject. So even the central ministry cannot force the state government to have checks and balances in place,” says Akshay Kumar of Mercury Himalayan Exploration , an adventure tour operator that has been in the business for over 35 years. “Currently there are no entry barriers. and that is our biggest problem. We need to feel proud of the sport we are in. My point is any company can’t get up and say I want to start an adventure company. You can’t be a banker one day and go on a couple of hikes and say let’s start a trekking company. That is something that needs to stop, and that is something that can only be controlled by a state government. All we are asking the state governments is to only allow companies that have qualifications, and who have, some level of financial backing to invest in the right equipment.” “You need to have some kind of a pre-qualification for you take people into India’s national heritage,” fumed Vaibhav Kala, who runs Aquaterra. “That’s the way we all view it. And that PQ is important because it basically it is giving you parameters and guidelines. There are so many people dying in the outdoors, nobody talks about it.”

Defining Mass Tourism in the adventure industry Mass tourism is often accused of lowering the quality of experience, degrading the environment, and a general lack of safety protocols. The guide-to-client ratio is skewed, and leave-no-trace-principles are not followed. Vaibhav Kala is one of the most vocal voices against mass tourism in adventure travel in India.

“You have these conveyor belt sort of operations,” he scoffs. “Take the Chadar trek for example—Jan 1st to 12th, 12th to 24th and so on…I remember taking note of one company running 1441 trekkers…it has become a circus. And then there is a lack of consequence. When is it going to end!?”

adventure tourism of india

How does one define mass tourism? Is there a particular limit in the number of people occupying a space beyond which it becomes a problem?

“There shouldn’t be any fixed camps,” says Ravi Kumar of NOLS . “You pack it in, and pack it out.”

One of the suggestions given was to regulate the areas by creating entry barriers and a set of mandatory guidelines. “We can have entry check points, where a minimum protocol needs to be followed, for example hiring a local guide, a certain client-to-guide ratio etc” said Kala.

“You don’t let just anyone enter the Taj Mahal, why should you do that for your outdoor heritage?” he asked.

The Independent Adventure Traveller

Last year, ATOAI released a handbook defining a set of best practice guidelines for each adventure sport in the country. However, it does not take into account a growing crop of independent outdoor travellers and clubs, that often take groups of people outdoors.

adventure tourism of india

Huw Kingston , travel writer and adventurer based in Australia has been travelling independently for over 35 years. He first came to India in 1984 at the age of 22, travelling around Zanskar. His last adventure visit was in 2008, also in the Himalayas. When asked about his views on independent vs organised travel in India, he said, “Organised travel takes a lot of focus in India. Now thats one side of the travel industry. And the other side is the independent travellers, who come with their skis and kayaks and they just do things. They are still tourists and are still contributing to the country in which they are travelling, but they don’t need a big infrastructure of the tents and porters. I think ATOAI needs to recognise that more independent adventurers exist, and add some sort of measurement for independent travellers contributing to the economy.”

Lack of Women in the Adventure Travel Industry

“It is a male-dominated space,”

In a panel on women in adventure travel, senior police official Radhika GR, who has climbed six of the seven summits, including Everest spoke candidly about her experience as a female mountaineer. “It is a male-dominated space,” she said to the audience. “Once in Nepal, I had my period, and I just couldn’t ask anyone for a sanitary pad! Finally, I came across a woman in a small cafe and she helped me.”

There is a distinct lack of women guides and tour operators in the country today. Bohemian Adventures is a four-year-old adventure tour operator based in Uttarakhand. It is run by three enterprising women – Guneet Puri, Anusha Subramaniam and Shashi Bahuguna. It caters to a “one and all” policy and takes a number of women solo trekkers, senior citizens, and persons with disability on their journeys. At the panel discussion, they spoke about how they were not taken seriously as a company, because they were women. “People used to ask us to join them when we would want to collaborate. Clients would offer to drive OUR vehicles in the mountains because we are women,” said Shashi. “We have a number of good, strong women, successfully completing their course at Nehru Institute of Mountaineering. Do you know what they do after it? They go back home. Because they don’t know there are opportunities. Why can’t tour operators hire them?!” exclaimed Guneet.

Environmental Degradation

When Vinayak Koul of Snowlion Expeditions led a trek up to Stok Kangri in Ladakh last summer, he was in for a lot of work. He was leading a journey, part of a clean-up drive under Ministry of Tourism’s Adopt a Heritage program. “We pushed to adopt outdoor spaces as our natural heritage and led two clean-up drives, one to Stok Kangri and the other to a source of the Ganges. I led the Stok Kangri trek.” He came back with 2,100 kilos of garbage, mostly plastic and tin. “We were shocked to see so much garbage. And will be doing more clean-up drives. Our mountains do not deserve this. Huw Kingston has passionately campaigned against the plastic bottle in his journeys and managed to make the Australian town of Bundadoon bottled water free. He said that people are refusing to visit the most desirable places because of garbage pollution. And it’s a global problem. One of the ways to mitigate this, as was suggested during the panel discussion, was to keep small group sizes, so that lesser impact is created. Another suggestion revolved around creating barriers at entry points to a space, and education.

The Budget Traveller

“There is definitely a lack of awareness amongst the youth,”

“We remove the frills, and we try to bring it down to their budget as much as possible. But we can never compete with the single digit margins,” says Anusha. “The highest cost goes to ponies and porters, and we don’t usually encourage our travellers to carry their own bags, because they usually don’t know enough and then we end up carrying their luggage in the end,” says Guneet. “We can never compromise on safety, on the client-to-guide ratio, and have to maintain a small group size. These things cost money,” says Shashi.

“There is definitely a lack of awareness amongst the youth,” says Dilshad Master Kumar of MHE . Dilshad comes from a media and entertainment background, who ran her own digital marketing agency and helped launch and manage television channels such as Star TV, National Geographic and UTV. She joined MHE full time as Director five years ago. “And there are a lot of companies that have cropped up in the last five to seven years that are very very high on technology and they are using their back-end tech to run their business and the older, more entrenched players in the business are feeling the pinch. Because they are not being able to cope with the technology, cope with the new social media spaces, and thats telling on business results. That is something that has to be looked into,” she said. MHE runs a blog called MHEStories.com , with sections such as “Bust the Myth”, “Expert Opinions” and other explainers on outdoors. “We need more such entrenched players to come out and educate the masses in this manner,” she said.

So, What is Adventure? And What is the Future of Adventure Travel in India?

“We probably need an act. An Adventure Travel Act in the country.”

Andreas Hilmar is a German travel agent who has been bringing groups of German-speaking travellers to India for the last 15 years. “My groups like visiting Sikkim, we do Ladakh, Assam, Nagaland, travel by the Ganga river. So from our point of view, and a number of travel agents in Europe, adventure tourism is not just sport adventure. We see adventure as going to areas to understand the culture, travel overland, or go on the river where there is not so much and takes long, or even to take trains in India. So this is for us an adventure of a lifetime because you get to see the culture of a place and its people,” he said.

“The industry is going to keep growing. We need to find more places,” says Pradeep Murthy of Muddy Boots, based in Kerala .  “And the same places will not work. Creating a database of places that are less explored, advising the govt to incentivise lesser known places. Shutting down areas, and allow them to recover and then alternately open other places, these are things that have a potential to work.” “I think finally the ministry is seeing the value that adventure tourism brings to the table,” says Akshay Kumar. “There is data to prove that for example in adventure travel, 60% of the income is retained within the country as compared to only 20% in leisure travel. Adventure travel retains a lot more income within the community and within the country. And I think the government is seeing the value and supporting our endeavours in a big way, which is a great sign.”

“Signs for India are great, but it is also deemed to be a country where there are 15000 adventure tour operators and only like 40-70 odd active companies recognised by the Government of India,” says Vaibhav Kala. “That is not good. That is a very poor signature for India, a supposedly big market. Its a big market because there are many small players, seasonal players. I was over the Parang la in July and this company behind us, and this guy just died on day 3. The guy was tired, there was no back up. And who is going to be responsible for his death? No one! And nothing is going to be done about it. And that pisses me off! They would say he died of a cardiac arrest. Yes his heart did stop, at the end of the day our hearts stop and we all die. But someone has to say that is not good enough. He was near collapse the day before. We probably need an act. An Adventure Travel Act in the country.”

India's Golden Triangle

I took part in the Golden Triangle tour, as a solo female. Leave your preconceived ideas at home, you won't find them here. The trip took in some great locations and the accommodation was clean and comfortable. Be prepared for humidity, heat and organised chaos. Before choosing a group tour remember you will be with strangers, although you will make friends, and as such they don't want/need to know the intimate details of your life... there is such a thing as TMI! Please read the trip notes and be aware of customs, especially tipping and clothing... and remember that your behaviour choices impact/reflect on the other group members

The tour guide was great, very knowledgeable and accommodating. Some of the elements felt like a school trip but that’s maybe because I have travelled alone before and am not used to doing everything en mass. Javed was fantastic and no request was too small. I would recommend the tour and also Javed as a guide.

The trip was well organized. The driver was very good. The hotels were ok except for the Lily Pool Heritage in Jaipur. The room was worn out. Room service was provided only after 3 complaints at 8 pm and done in a lousy fashion. Moreover, the guys at the reception were anything but nice and helpful

In general a fantastic experience! Will totally recommend the company to friends and family. Golden Triangle Tour with Varanasi Tour

Golden Triangle Tour with Varanasi

I have recently returned from a 10 day private tour around Rajasthan where we were looked after like royalty by our wonderful driver Rakesh - a credit to the company. He was charming ;courteous with a good sense of humour and truly made our holiday special. Tour Radar & World Travel Experiences were also excellent - tailor making the holiday to my needs. I loved vibrant and wonderful Rajasthan and all the 5* hotels were a welcome sanctuary at the end of the day. The only exception is the Crystal Sarovar in Agra which is very tired and definitely not a 5* hotel. If you want to experience true luxury I would recommend opting for 5* deluxe hotels or Heritage Hotels. We stayed in a unique Heritage property in Rohet Garh - just stunning ! The guides in each location ranged from excellent to good. A special shout out to Vina in Jaipur - the first female guide in Rajasthan and by far the best on the whole trip. I wouldn't hesitate in using Tour Radar again for my next holiday and will indeed be recommending them to my friends and family.

  • President ATOAI highlights 3 G’s for risk mitigation – Guidelines, Guides, and Gear. Working with the Bureau of Standards to standardize adventure equipment for adventure sports in the country.

Adventure Tour Operators Association of India (ATOAI) in association with Tourism Corporation of Gujarat, utters the message of responsible adventure louder by hosting its 15 th Annual Convention in Ekta Nagar, Gujarat with a thoughtful theme, a carbon-neutral extravaganza. Paving the way for Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2024, the convention aims to enhance collaborations and foster opportunities in the domain of adventure tourism. On the inaugural day, Ajeet Bajaj, President, ATOAI thanked Gujarat Tourism for rolling out the ‘Green Carpet’ for the convention attendees. Sharing his vision, Bajaj mentions, “Just before pandemic, according to global projections, adventure tourism was estimated to be a trillion-dollar industry by 2024. And we feel our country India has everything, with 73% of the Himalayan range, 7000 km coastline, we are one of world’s biodiversity hotspots with every conceivable geographical terrain, and we have the potential of 50 Switzerlands in India itself. The World Economic Forum ranks our natural heritage as amongst the 10 best in the world. Our mission is to have India ranked in amongst the 10 best adventure destinations in the world in the next ten years. He further thanked the Ministry of Tourism, Govt of India, for the support and setting up a National Board for Adventure Tourism. Thanking Mr. Arvind Singh, Former Secretary, Ministry of Tourism, Govt of India, Bajaj addresses the present team at the Ministry as a dream team. “We are working very closely on issues like a model law for adventure tourism, adventure rescue centers, satellite phones for operators, insurance and more.” Mentioning the latest progress, Bajaj announces “We are pleased to announce that the Govt. of India has agreed to our proposal of setting up two mega trails, the Western Himalayan Mega Trail, which will start from Jammu and pass through Kashmir, Ladakh, Spiti, Himachal, Garhwal and Kumaon, ending in the Tri-junction area. We also now got a Ganga Nature and Heritage Trail, starting from Gaumukh, from where Ganga begins her descent down, and go all the way along the river for 2700 km to Ganga Sagar in the Bay of Bengal. These two initiatives are going to be a game changer for adventure tourism and the country as well.” In Gujarat, India has 1200 km coastline with the potential of many adventure activities, and ATOAI is going to work closely with the Govt. of Gujarat to make it an attractive adventure destination in the country. Bajaj encourages the adventure tour operators, to work harder as a lot need to be done with the government, and state governments. Bajaj also highlights 3 G’s of for risk mitigation – Guidelines, Guides, and Gear. ATOAI has safety guidelines covering 31 verticals of adventure sports, and the guidelines are framed to work as a guiding light. “Our guides are our ambassadors, who not only have to be skilled to perfection in their area of operations, but also have to be perfect in their communication skills including first-aid, CPR, etc and they have to be our rockstars of the industry. Also, we are working with the Bureau of Standards to standardize adventure equipment for adventure sports in the country. And most importantly, we have to be the custodians for our Mother Nature, for the wilderness areas that we are blessed with. And all of us have to pledge to be moral wardens to the strict ‘Leave no Trace’ ethos”, concluded Bajaj. During his address, Pema Khandu, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh encourages the participants mentioning, “In our country we have a huge potential for adventure tourism, but we are still not able to harness our potential. I appreciate the vision of ATOAI, and also invite ATOAI to organize its 16th Annual Convention in the breathtaking landscapes of Arunachal Pradesh. During this three-days convention, I think this is going to be a good platform with all the experts gathered, where you are going to discuss very important topics, wherein the State and Union governments can come and handhold a good vision for adventure tourism prospects of the country.” He further adds, “If we want to promote good tourism, we need to have good infrastructure and strong communication. Travelers are now conscious about time and our Hon’ble PM is trying his best to put infrastructure right in place to save time and promote more flow of tourists to the Northeast. ATOAI has brought adventure tour operators today to this platform and you can now guide us and the respective State boards with your suggestions on how to utilize the facilities better, and we can take them forward. On the same lines, Lt. Gen. Rakesh Kapoor, Deputy Chief of Army Staff mentions “Tourism in India can be a 24*7 round-the-year activity, depending on where you want to be or which part. According to the Forbes list, India is the 7 th most beautiful country, I think they are wrong. India is possibly the most beautiful country in the world. And if we are the most beautiful country in this world, we need to increase the percentage of what adventure and tourism contribute to the GDP. Today we are at 4.6%, collectively all of us need to increase the contribution towards the GDP. If we are the 22 nd ranked country visited across the world, there is huge scope to increase our contribution of foreign earnings from tourism.” Emphasizing the need to fuel up border area tourism, Kapoor mentions “The border areas of our country offer us battlefield tourism, allowing the young generation to understand the rich history of the country. The border areas also offer adventure and a huge understanding of the ecology of this country. Besides, border areas also offer spiritual and cultural tourism as well, as the culture of every State has its own distinct character, and you get a flavor and a taste of different cultures obtained by the country. And the army is keen to associate with all agencies and Govt. of India to develop border area tourism, as with the growth of this segment of tourism there comes significant development to that region, improvement in infrastructure, more facilities, more capacities to operate and more security as well.”

Adventure tourism is big, it’s exciting, it’s fun…. but what actually is it? In this article I will teach you all about this exciting type of tourism, what the history behind adventure tourism is, what the different types of adventure tourism are and what amazing examples of this type of tourism there are around the world. Ready to learn more? Read on…

What is adventure tourism?

History of adventure tourism, hard adventure tourism, soft adventure tourism, hard adventure tourism activities , soft adventure tourism activities , adventure tourism in india, adventure tourism in iceland, adventure tourism in costa rica, adventure tourism in new zealand, benefits of adventure tourism, disadvantages of adventure tourism, adventure tourism: additional reading.

Adventure tourism is tourism that involves any kind of activity or adventure. It especially relates to those that involve risk, or requires extensive planning. The Adventure Travel Trade Association defines it as a tourist activity that includes physical activity, cultural exchange, or activities in nature .  Meanwhile, Sung et al describe it as: the sum of the phenomena and relationships arising from the interactions of adventure touristic activities with the natural environment away from the participant’s usual place of residence area and containing elements of risk in which the outcome is influenced by the participation, setting, and the organizer of the tourist’s experience . HH Sung is an academic who has researched this branch of tourism in great detail.

Ultimately, adventure tourism is all about ADVENTURE! It is a pretty broad term really and many would argue that it is subjective (what I deem to be adventure, you may not). Nonetheless, this is a big part of the tourism industry and whilst it is an example of niche tourism , the sector is growing fast! There are lots of types of activities and types of travel that come under the umbrella term of adventure tourism and I will outline these for you shortly.

What is adventure tourism

Of course, people have been travelling for centuries- the history of tourism is a long and fruitful one! Over the years travel evolved into tourism (travel for travel’s sake) and now we can see many different branches of tourism.

We can trace the roots of adventure tourism specifically back to perhaps as early as 569 AD when Alboin, king of the Lombards, climbed Matajur in the Alps . Adventure tourism is all about doing something with a bit of risk, and putting planning into it. We don’t know how much preparation Alboin put into this expedition or whether it was some sort of off the cuff climb – but it can still be seen as an early example of adventure tourism. Climbing mountains at this time was generally a practical or symbolic activity. It was usually done for economic, political, or religious reasons.

However, in the 1800s, adventurers pushed the limits more and more. It became a formal sport, and people did it for fun. Other adventurous activities such as caving, river-rafting, abseiling and gorge walking emerged as a fun way to pass the time. As people got more into them, these activities formed part of adventure tourism. Organisations such as Nat Geo and also The Explorers Club, as well as Boy Scouts and Girl Guides  to an extent, were established. These have always promoted and supported adventure tourism.

In recent years consumer desires have evolved and many people have/are moving away from the traditional sun, sea and sand package holiday model and instead seeking alternative experience. There are a wide range of types of tourism that people are embracing more and more nowadays, and one example is adventure tourism. There are more adventure tourism companies including travel agents and tour operators who specialise in this field than there have ever been before.

Types of adventure tourism

Adventure tourism can be split into two ‘types’. These are hard and soft. I will explore the differences below…

As the name suggests, hard adventure tourism refers to activities which are typically more high-risk. They require intense training, changes in diet, lots of practice, a guide and so on.

Soft adventure activities are the opposite – much less risky, and don’t require the long-term commitment that hard adventure tourism activities often would. They often are led by a guide, but you can do this sort of thing without. Generally these are much more popular, as they are easier activities and (as mentioned) have a much lower risk.

What is adventure tourism?

Adventure tourism activities

There are so many activities which come under the umbrella of adventure tourism. Whether you travel simply for the purpose of undertaking this adventure or decide to incorporate it into your trip, if you have done any of these then you are officially an adventure traveller! I’ll split them into hard and soft as above. Activities like skydiving are something you can do in most places, as long as the weather allows – skiing, however, requires specific conditions and plenty of hills.

What is adventure tourism

  • Mountaineering/mountain climbing
  • Ice Climbing
  • Rock climbing
  • Trekking/intense hiking
  • Free diving
  • Extreme biking
  • Birdwatching
  • SCUBA diving
  • Horse riding
  • Kayaking/rafting
  • Orienteering
  • Hiking (gentle)
  • Snorkelling
  • Snowboarding
  • Eco-tourism

Adventure tourism destinations

You can enjoy adventure tourism activities in pretty much any destination. There are some more than others, however, which are better set up for this branch of tourism.

What is adventure tourism

Adventure tourism is a big deal in India . This diverse and spectacular country has so much to offer – and one of the big draws here is hiking and trekking. There are plenty of incredible places to hike in India. Gentle hikes/treks are a form of soft adventure tourism, while some more intense treks and hikes can fall into the hard category. Uttarakhand is one of the best places to hike in India; the ‘Roopkund trek’ is a famous trek around Roopkund Lake, which is surrounded by hundreds of human skeletons!

Other examples of adventure tourism in India include surfing in Kovalam, skiing in Auli and white water rafting in Rishikesh.

What is adventure tourism

Beautiful Iceland is one of the most popular places for visiting the Northern Lights. This in itself is a bit of an adventure, but there are all sorts of other things you can do which come under this branch of tourism. You can snorkel or scuba dive in Silfra Fissure, for example, or go inside a dormant volcano at Thrihnukagigur.

What is adventure tourism

It is impossible to be bored in a place like Costa Rica. The country has so much to offer, and is an example of somewhere that to most of us (no matter where you come from) is pretty exotic. Head deep into the jungle on your adventure to see some colourful wildlife; visit the Costa Rica volcanoes and cloud forests ; go rafting and hiking and ziplining and so much more. You can book 10-day trips that encompass all of these things, or you could stay somewhere peaceful and relax for the majority of your holiday, opting to book a one-day tour for some adventure.

What is adventure tourism

Said by some to be the home of adventure tourism, New Zealand is a must for anyone considering this type of trip. With so much space and such a sparse population , is it any wonder that this lovely little country is home to so much adventure? Admire the views from up high by skydiving in many different locations, or raft on the highest commercially rafted waterfall in the world in Rotorua! From caving to off-road driving to heli-skiing, there is so much choice in New Zealand.

There are many benefits when it comes to adventure tourism. One huge benefit is simply that it is so much fun. Trying something new, or doing something you already enjoy, is a brilliant way to spend your time while travelling. Gaining a new skill or honing the one you’ve been learning for ages – it’s such a sense of achievement. This is particularly true for activities that require physical hard work such as skiing, or training like mountain climbing.

Adventure tourism is growing fast, and with that comes job creation. This is a definite benefit of any type of tourism. Jobs are created for guides and instructors, for people who work in the booking department of tourism companies, for people working in hotels or restaurants in areas that people may not visit otherwise. All of this means the economy is growing and the industry is thriving, resulting in positive economic impacts of tourism . Local communities are supported by all forms of tourism. This is no exception!

Due to the rise in the popularity of ecotourism and the ongoing conversations around sustainability, adventure tourism companies are often dedicated to protecting the environment. Though it may seem like these activities could be harmful, they are often not. This is because companies ensure the activities they offer are respectful of the planet too. It also allows more people to fall in love with the outdoors.

There are some disadvantages to adventure tourism too. Nothing is black and white, of course, and points on both sides are incredibly nuanced. While these activities are a fun chance to try something new, they can be dangerous. Hard adventure tourism activities are considered high-risk. Many will require you to sign a disclaimer (like skydiving) and for some you need months if not years of training. Most insurance companies won’t cover you either. To climb Mount Everest, for example, you need a permit – with the fees on top, this will set you back around $20,000 before you even buy equipment. There are strict criteria you need to meet to be granted one, too.

And even though many adventure tourism companies are looking out for the planet, individuals often are not. There is no guarantee that visitors will always be respectful of the local environment. From standing on things they shouldn’t to the classing dropping litter, there are many negatives that we can see from an increased footfall.

There may also be cultural and social impacts. With more visitors, locals may see some sort of loss of their cultural heritage over time. This can be devastating. With more tourists in place, especially during peak season, peoples’ roles in society naturally change. The status quo is affected.

Now that you are well-informed about thew adventure tourism industry, you may want to learn more about these tourism industries too-

adventure tourism of india

You don’t have to travel too far for adventure-filled vacations as there’s plenty of outdoor playgrounds across the United States where you can try everything from surfing on sand dunes to scuba diving to shipwrecks.

What type of activities are considered adventurous depends on your own comfort level — for some, a trail hike with scenic vistas is enough to get the adrenaline pumping while others will feel like they’re pushing their limits on a via ferrata route where you’re clipped in to steel cables and scaling an open rock face. When you’re trying out a new adventure, team up with a local outfitter who knows the terrain and can help you master a new skill.

Ahead, find a list of nine great adventure vacations in the U.S., running from family-friendly trips to those that are great for solo adventurers.

Board Down Sand Dunes At Great Sand Dunes National Park

Alamosa County, Colorado, USA - July 11, 2021 - A woman sitting on a sandboard watches fellow ... [+] tourists at Great Sand Dunes National Park enjoy sandboarding down the dunes of the namesake recreation area.

Best Time to Go: Late May or early June, when temps aren't too hot and you have a shot of enjoying the surge flow from Medano Creek, which creates a pop-up beach.

When the slopes shut down for the ski season, there’s a new way to shred terrain in Colorado: Zoom down sand dunes on a sandboard. You can’t bring any snowboard because the sand has a different grip, but there’s lots of outfitters near the park that rent out sandboards. For a gentler ride down these giant dunes in Great Sand Dunes National Park, you can ride in a sled. Sand boarding requires some balance, and hiking back up the dunes is a vigorous physical activity. Great Sand Dunes National Park is located in southern Colorado near Alamosa.

These dives double as an underwater adventure and a history lesson. Some of the best spots to see sunken ships is in Florida, like the USS Spiegel Grove shipwreck that’s six miles off the coast of Key Largo. The Vandenburg, a former World War II transport ship, is a popular Key West wreck drive. Visit Florida estimates that there’s 5,000 sunken ships off its 1,200 miles of coastline. Get your scuba diving certifications before you start planning a trip and go with a local outfitter.

You’re clipped in to a steel cable that runs up the mountain, and steel rungs strategically placed throughout the route help you find your footing. Ouray is a historic mining town, and midway through the trip, you get to walk through an abandoned mine and blacksmith shop. Afterwards, soak your tired muscles in some of the town’s hot springs.
