Capital One Transfer Miles Success

Bottom Line: Transferring Capital One miles to travel partners is super easy, just follow the steps online, and you’ll be ready to book luxury travel before you know it!

Other Capital One options like redeeming miles for cash statement credits or gift cards are not as good a value as travel. You’ll only get 0.5 cents per mile, or even less for merchandise.

When your eligible card is linked to PayPal, you can checkout with PayPal and redeem your miles at a rate of 125 miles to $1. We’d recommend this only if you can’t use your miles for travel or as a statement credit.

Combining Capital One miles from your different Capital One accounts is a simple process. The key is you need to have a miles-earning Capital One card like Capital One Venture X card, Capital One Venture card, or Capital One Spark Miles for Business .

Hot Tip: You can also convert cash-back from the Capital One Spark Cash Plus Card to Capital One Miles at a 1:1 ratio.

Cards like the Capital One Savor Rewards Credit Card or Capital One SavorOne Rewards Credit Card do not earn miles and so cannot be combined.

Capital One has cards that earn Capital One miles and cards that earn cash rewards. At Upgraded Points, we love to travel and focus on earning miles, so Capital One Miles credit cards are fantastic options in our minds.

Chase Sapphire Preferred vs. Capital One Venture: Which $95 Annual Fee Card Should You Pick?

Kurt Adams

March 7, 2024

Going has partnered with CardRatings for our coverage of credit card products. Going and CardRatings may receive a commission from card issuers. Opinions, reviews, analyses, and recommendations are the author's alone, and have not been reviewed, endorsed, or approved by any of these entities. Some of all of the card offers that appear on this page are from advertisers; compensation may affect how and where the cards appear on the site; and Going does not include all card companies are all available card offers.

In life, we’re constantly asked to choose between two options, and that’s true when it comes to travel credit cards.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and Capital One Venture Rewards Card are two entry-level travel cards that are great for folks who want to start earning points and miles. How do you choose which one is right for you?

Chase Sapphire Preferred vs. Capital One Venture Rewards Card

Let’s start with how the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card and Capital One Venture Rewards Card similar.

Let’s start with how the card_name and card_name are similiar.

Each card carries an annual fee of annual_fees , which means the barrier to entry is relatively low.

In addition, both cards come with a foreign_transaction_fee foreign transaction fee, which means that you will not pay extra pesky fees when you use your card internationally. Instead, your credit card issuer converts the purchase into US dollars based on the exchange rate on the date of the transacation.

Both beginner cards earn points that transfer to a handful of airline and hotel partners. They also both come with nice welcome offers that can get you at least a head start toward a free flight.

Since the cost of holding the cards is equal, how do they compare? Which one is right for you?

Earning points

I say this often but pay close attention to your card’s earning rates. While a welcome offer is exciting, the bonus points your card earns on your daily purchases will matter in the long term.

The card_name and card_name differ most when it comes to earning bonus points.

Capital One Venture Rewards Card

The card_name is quite simple: you’ll earn 2X points per dollar spent on all eligible purchases.

That’s it. Nothing else to think about.

Going to a football game? Buying tickets to a concert? This card will earn you 2X points on every purchase.

Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card

The card_name earns bonus points in several spending categories. The card’s sweet spots are in experiences like travel, food, and streaming services.

More specifically, you’ll earn:

  • 2X points per dollar on travel purchases: This is a pretty capacious category and includes things like public transit and Amtrak trains, as well as airfare.
  • 5X points per dollar on purchases through the bank’s travel portal:  If you book your flight through the bank’s travel portal and pay Chase, you’ll earn at this higher rate. Just do your homework first and compare the price if you bought directly from the airline.
  • 3X points per dollar on dining at restaurants takeout, and eligible delivery services:  Who doesn’t like to eat?
  • 3X points per dollar on online grocery stores (excluding Target, Wal-Mart and wholesale clubs):  This could be a great card to use if you ever order groceries online through services like Instacart or FreshDIrect.
  • 3X points per dollar on streaming services:  This could be a great card to put your monthly Netflix or Disney+ subscription on.
  • 1X points per dollar on all other purchases.

Plus, on each card anniversary, the Chase Sapphire Preferred card awards you extra bonus points. You’ll receive an anniversary bonus equal to 10% of the total amount you spent last year. So, if you spent  $10,000 on purchases, you’d get 1,000-anniversary bonus points.

Welcome offers

Both cards come with welcome offers granting you thousands of flexible travel points after spending a certain amount. Their offers are:

bonus_miles_full

Chase Sapphire Preferred Card

In sheer raw numbers, the welcome offer on the Capital One Venture Rewards card is higher.

But, I’d argue that the welcome offer on the Chase Sapphire Preferred card is more valuable because of where you can transfer its points. I’ll explain more below.

Transfer partners

The best way to maximize the value of your credit card points is to transfer them to the bank's airline and hotel partners . Called “transfer partners” or “travel partners,” you convert your hard-earned credit card points into miles with a specific airline.

Both the card_name and the card_name transfer to a lot of the same international airlines. Common transfer partners with each include:

The Capital One Venture Rewards card also has Avianca LifeMiles and Turkish Miles&Smiles among its  transfer partners . We have sent several Going with Points deals making use of these airline partners.

However, I think it is Chase Sapphire Preferred’s  travel partners where the card really shines. In addition to the partners listed above, the Chase Sapphire Preferred card has several US domestic airlines as partners including, United MileagePlus, Southwest Airlines, and JetBlue.

In addition, Iberia airlines is another airline partner, which can be a great way to fly business class to Europe for a reasonable amount of miles. The Chase Sapphire Preferred card also transfers to Hyatt hotels, which is a favorite of point and miles enthusiasts.

To be perfectly honest with you, the breadth of transfer partners for a relatively low annual fee is why the Chase Sapphire Preferred card is my favorite card in my wallet.

Extra card perks and protections

One of the great things about the Capital One Venture Rewards card is that it offers a statement credit for an application fee for  Global Entry or TSA PreCheck .

You can use this application credit once every four years. And, if you already have it you could use this card’s credit for a loved one’s application.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred card doesn’t have the Global Entry/TSA PreCheck credit, but it is one of our top picks for  credit cards with rental car insurance because it comes with Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver.

While many travel credit cards offer secondary rental car insurance coverage, this card provides primary coverage on car rentals, which means you would not need to file a claim with your personal auto insurance.  So, if you used this card to pay for your rental car, you could potentially decline the rental company’s collision insurance and save on your costs.

This is the full list of travel protections that the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card offers:

  • Trip Cancellation/Interruption Insurance: Up to $10,000 reimbursed per person if your trip is cancelled or cut short by sickness, severe weather or other covered situations.
  • Auto rental collision damage waiver: Primary coverage
  • Baggage delay insurance: Reimburses baggage delays over 6 hours up to $100 a day for five days.
  • Trip delay insurance: Up to $500 per ticket when your carrier is delayed more than 12 hours or requires an overnight stay. Can include meal and lodging expenses.

Should you get the Chase Sapphire Preferred or Capital One Venture Rewards Card?

For most people, the card_name is the better option, simply because Chase points are more valuable than Capital One Miles (their term for points). While the Global Entry/TSA PreCheck credit is tempting, I think most casual travelers are better off with the travel protections that the Chase Sapphire Preferred provides. You could always get Global Entry or TSA PreCheck through another card that compliments its bonus categories.

Still, if you’d rather not track categories, and just want to earn a flat 2X points per dollar, then the  card_name might be the better option for you.

Of course, there’s no reason why you can’t have both. They complement each other and allow you to earn more points together.

Still need to think about it? Read our reviews of each card to help you decide.

Capital One Spark Miles Select for Business Review: A world of travel opportunities with no annual fee

Our take: The Capital One Spark Miles Select for Business card is an excellent no-annual-fee card for earning rewards on business expenses and provides flexibility in redeeming miles . However, those looking for more travel benefits might be disappointed by its lack of bells and whistles.

  • Earns rewards on all business spending, with no limits or category restrictions.
  • Miles are transferable to 18 airline and hotel partners for high-value redemptions.
  • No annual fee.
  • The 1.5X earn rate is low compared to other no-annual-fee business cards .
  • Lacks travel protections found on other travel cards.
  • High cash advance and penalty APR.

Capital One Spark Miles Select for Business Overview

Moreover, these rewards can be transferred to 18 airline and hotel loyalty programs for even greater value.

The Capital One Spark Miles Select also provides an excellent incentive for new cardholders, with 50,000 miles after spending $4,500 within three months of account opening. Additionally, the Spark Miles Select for Business doesn't charge foreign transaction fees, making it convenient for businesses making international purchases or traveling abroad.

Applicants can apply for this card with an Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN).

Who is the Capital One Spark Miles Select for Business Card good for?

The Capital One Spark Miles Select for Business Card is good for small business owners seeking elevated travel rewards without an annual fee. The card’s unlimited 1.5X-mile earn rate on every purchase makes it ideal for businesses with varied spending, allowing them to earn elevated rewards on all purchases. If you prefer a card that earns consistent rewards on every purchase rather than tracking category bonuses across numerous cards, then the Spark Miles Select might be a good choice for you.

Moreover, it provides flexibility in redeeming miles since you can transfer them to 18 airline and hotel partners, providing versatility. Pros of the Capital One Spark Miles Select for Business Card include its lack of an annual fee, unlimited 1.5X miles on all purchases and the flexibility to redeem rewards across multiple travel partners.

Who shouldn’t get the Capital One Spark Miles Select for Business Card?

The Capital One Spark Miles Select card might not be the best fit for businesses seeking premium travel perks or higher rewards in common business categories. If your business incurs substantial expenses in areas like travel, dining or advertising, other cards offer greater bonuses in these categories. Additionally, this card might not be a good fit if you want luxury travel benefits such as airport lounge access or comprehensive travel insurance .

Capital One Spark Miles Select for Business Card: How to earn rewards

The Capital One Spark Miles Select for Business Card has a straightforward rewards structure. Cardholders earn unlimited 1.5X miles per dollar spent and unlimited 5X miles on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel. Additionally, the card provides a lucrative welcome bonus to give your Capital One balance a boost: 50,000 miles after spending $4,500 within three months of account opening.

How to redeem Capital One miles

Capital One Spark Miles Select for Business cardholders earn valuable Capital One miles, which can be redeemed in numerous ways. Options include cash back, gift cards, merchandise and travel bookings. The best use of Capital One miles is through transfers to one of their 18 airline and hotel partners. Here’s a look at all the ways you can put your Capital One miles to use:

Transfer to airlines and hotels

Transferring Capital One miles to airline and hotel partners is the best way to get maximum value for them. Capital One miles transfer to 15 airlines and three hotel loyalty programs. You can use these miles to book business and first-class tickets or even all-inclusive hotel stays. Some of the best transfer partners include Air France-KLM Flying Blue, Wyndham Rewards and Virgin Red.

Travel bookings

If you don’t want to deal with researching different loyalty programs for the best redemptions, you can use miles towards travel bookings at one cent each. You can book through the Capital One Travel portal and redeem miles at checkout or you can book elsewhere and then redeem miles as a statement credit afterwards. While you won’t get as much value by using miles for travel bookings, it’s a viable option if you can’t find award space or prefer a more straightforward option.

If you don’t have upcoming travel plans but want to use Capital One miles to offset expenses, you can redeem them for cash at a half a cent each. Options include statement credits or a check in the mail.

Redeem for merchandise, gift cards, event tickets, Amazon and PayPal checkout

The least valuable way to redeem Capital One miles is for merchandise, gift cards, event tickets, Amazon and PayPal checkout. These options will get you anywhere between  0.8 and 1 cents per mile.

Capital One Spark Miles Select for Business rates and fees

  • Annual fee: $0
  • Foreign transaction fee: None
  • Purchase APR: 18.49% - 24.49% variable

Additional benefits

  • Free employee cards: You can issue extra cards to employees so they can earn rewards on business spending without paying an extra fee.
  • No foreign transaction fees: Some credit cards charge a 3% foreign transaction fee on purchases made or originating abroad. The Spark Miles Select card waives this fee.
  • Rental collision coverage: Receive primary coverage towards damage and theft of rental vehicles.

Credit cards similar to the Capital One Spark Miles Select for Business

The Capital One Miles Select for Business is a great option for a no-annual-fee card with solid rewards. However, it’s not the only card that checks those boxes. Moreover, if the Spark Miles Select isn’t quite as rewarding on the travel front, there might be a better alternative. Here’s a look at credit cards similar to the Capital One Spark Miles Select for Business:

Capital One Spark Miles for Business vs. Capital One Spark Miles Select Business Card

The Capital One Spark Miles for Business and the Capital One Spark Miles Select both earn flat rewards on all business spending, though they differ in their rates. The Capital One Spark Miles Card earns 2X on all spending, while the Spark Miles Select earns 1.5X. The Spark Miles card has a $0 intro for the first year, $95 after, while the Spark Miles Select has none.

Spark Miles cardholders also receive up to a $100 fee credit every four years towards TSA Precheck or Global Entry applications. Both cards offer 50,000 miles if you spend $4,500 in first 3 months of account opening. Plus, the miles are transferable to the same airline and hotel loyalty programs.

Choosing between these cards largely depends on the business's spending habits, as those with substantial expenses might benefit from the higher rewards rate of the Spark Miles for Business card despite its annual fee, whereas businesses seeking a no-annual-fee option might find the Spark Miles Select more suitable.

Capital One Venture X Business Card vs. Capital One Spark Miles Select Business Card

Both the Capital One Venture X Business Card and the Spark Miles Select cater to business owners looking for travel rewards, yet they differ in terms of their rewards and benefits. The Venture X Business is better suited to businesses seeking premium travel perks like airport lounge access, annual bonus points, travel credits and a TSA PreCheck or Global Entry fee credit. On the other hand, the Spark Miles Select caters to businesses seeking simplicity without an annual fee and flat-rate rewards.

The Venture X Business earns more points than the Spark Miles Select: 2X miles on every purchase, 5X miles on Capital One Travel flight bookings and 10X on Capital One hotels and rental cars. The card’s $395 annual fee is steep but largely offset by the annual $300 travel credit and 10,000-mile bonus (worth $100). Both cards accrue miles that can be used for travel-related expenses or transferred to 18 airline and hotel partners.

If you can make use of the Venture X Business Card’s benefits, it can be a better option than the  Spark Miles Select. Especially since the Venture X Business offers triple the welcome bonus of the Spark Miles Select: 150,000 bonus miles after you spend $30,000 in the first three months, which is equal to $1,500 in travel.

Is the Capital One Spark Miles Select for Business Card right for you?

The Capital One Spark Miles Select for Business Card could be right for you if you're a small business owner seeking simplicity and flexibility in earning travel rewards without the burden of an annual fee. This card offers a straightforward rewards structure with unlimited 1.5X miles on all purchases, making it ideal for businesses whose expenses span across multiple categories. This card provides excellent value if you prioritize a hassle-free approach to earning miles and prefer the freedom to transfer them to different airline and hotel programs.

Capital One Adds Airline Transfer Partners, Set To Open Airport Lounges

Capital One might trail behind other big banks, like American Express and Chase, in the eyes of savvy travelers optimizing for credit card perks that level up their status, like airline lounges, trip flexibility and copious rewards points.

But the bank behind the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card is emerging as a dark horse in the travel credit card space, especially with news that more loyalty programs will join its mileage transfer programs. Couple that with its new Capital One airport lounges set to open later this year, and Capital One is shaping up to be a more competitive player.

Here's an overview of several of the changes in the works for Capital One that will perk the ears of travelers.

More hotel and airline loyalty programs join Capital One’s program

One of the best ways to spend miles earned through Capital One is by transferring them to the loyalty programs of other airlines or hotels.

There were already over a dozen airlines and hotel partners you could transfer to, but in April, Capital One announced four more. They are:

British Airways (Avios).

Choice Hotels (Choice Privileges).

TAP Air Portugal (Miles&Go).

Turkish Airlines (Miles&Smiles).

Capital One improves redemptions with more 1:1 transfer partners

Transferring miles can get confusing. For example, 2,000 Capital One Venture miles won’t get you 2,000 Eva Air Infinity MileageLands miles (they’ll get you 1,500 Eva Air Infinity MileageLands miles, actually).

That’s because some programs transfer at a rate of 2 Venture miles to 1.5 airline miles. As of late 2021 though, Capital One has simplified things by adjusting to a 1:1 transfer ratio for the majority of airline partners.

Choice Hotels and the following airlines now have a 1:1 transfer ratio:

Air Canada Aeroplan .

Air France/KLM Flying Blue .

British Airways Avios .

Emirates Skywards .

Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer .

Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles .

New details on the upcoming Capital One airport lounges

travel partners for capital one

Capital One previously announced that it would launch a couple new airport lounges, and the company just revealed new details as to what they’ll be like.

The lounges will be located at Dallas-Fort Worth, opening in fall 2021, and Washington-Dulles, opening in 2022. Dulles is not far from Capital One’s headquarters in McLean, Virginia, and the company also has corporate offices in Plano, Texas, which is not far from Dallas-Fort Worth.

Don’t expect these airport lounges to be overcrowded, serving nothing but a sad tray of cheese cubes. The lounges could compete with the esteemed Centurion Lounges run by American Express. There are more than a dozen Centurion Lounges around the world, all offering high-quality food, top-shelf cocktails and a classy place to wait for your flight. Some offer extra amenities including showers, spas, play areas for kids and wine-tasting areas.

It sounds like the Capital One lounges will be similar — and in some ways, potentially better.

What to expect from the Capital One airport lounge refreshments

Capital One said its lounges will open with a grab-and-go food section featuring curated menus by local, up-and-coming chefs. Travelers should expect healthy selections made with regionally sourced ingredients, plus cold brew on tap.

There will also be a restaurant-quality, in-lounge dining experience that serves craft cocktails on tap, local beers and regional wines.

What to expect from the Capital One airport lounge amenities

Of course, there’s going to be more to do than eat. Capital One said its lounges will include a cycling and yoga room. You’ll probably need a shower after that — and luckily there are shower suites with luxury bath amenities. There will also be relaxation rooms, nursing rooms and a multi-faith room for prayer or meditation.

Additionally, luggage lockers will be available to help clear up space — and avoid you tripping on the handles of someone else's bag.

How to get into a Capital One airport lounge

It's not entirely clear how Capital One will allow access quite yet, but a spokesperson told NerdWallet that Capital One customers will be eligible for special cardholder pricing depending on their card. It sounds like the higher the annual fee is on your Capital One card, the lower pricing will be available to you.

That's a different model than The Centurion Lounge from American Express, which is only accessible to cardholders of its highest-end cards (though entrance is complimentary). Unless you're visiting as a guest of an eligible cardholder, you can't buy your way into a Centurion Lounge.

Capital One partners with Hopper

Earlier this year, Capital One announced a partnership with online booking site Hopper to power its own booking site, Capital One Travel. That new site will launch later this year, allowing Capital One customers to set up alerts and use price prediction models to get recommendations on when to book trips. The service is also set to help customers more easily change or cancel their reservations (with full Cancel for Any Reason coverage launching in Spring 2022), and to serve as a shop to earn and redeem rewards.

Earn more miles with the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card

To get in on the improved transfer ratios — and to set yourself up for entrance into the new airport lounges — consider applying for a Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card . Here is how many miles you could earn through its welcome offer: Enjoy a one-time bonus of 75,000 miles once you spend $4,000 on purchases within 3 months from account opening, equal to $750 in travel.

Not bad for a $95 -annual-fee card that will earn an unlimited 2x miles per dollar on every purchase.

And while the rewards are referred to as miles, that’s a bit of a misnomer; your miles can be redeemed for any recent travel purchase, such as vacation rentals, flights, car rentals and more. In fact, you'll actually earn an increased 5x miles when you book rental cars or hotels through Capital One Travel.

The bottom line

Capital One typically isn’t the first credit card issuer people think of when it comes to premium travel. But as Capital One improves redemption rates and adds new transfer partners — while also adding a couple very fancy airport lounges to its offerings — it looks like that could change. And to go with that, the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card might end up being one of the top cards in a traveler’s wallet, with greater flexibility and an increased sign-up bonus.

Bank of America® Travel Rewards Secured Credit Card: A secured card with rewards that can be used to cover travel purchases

Photo of Bank of America® Travel Rewards Secured Credit Card on a blue and green abstract background

Our take: The Bank of America® Travel Rewards Secured Credit Card offers a cost-effective approach to building credit and earning rewards with its lack of annual and foreign transaction fees. Use it to help you climb the rungs of the credit score ladder.

Bank of America® Travel Rewards Secured Credit Card Overview

Card Type: Secured

The Bank of America Travel Rewards Secured Credit Card offers a budget-friendly option for individuals looking to build or improve their credit. With a $0 annual fee and no foreign transaction fees, it provides a cost-effective way to manage your finances while earning rewards. Since the card is designed for cardholders who want to boost their credit score or establish a credit history, it’s a card with few frills or perks: You won’t get a welcome bonus or 0% introductory APR on balance transfers or purchases.

To open a card, you must make a minimum security deposit of $200 and a maximum of $5,000. Typically, with a secured card , your security deposit determines your credit limit. The security deposit acts as collateral if you default on your payments.

According to Bank of America, your maximum credit limit is calculated based on your security deposit, income, and creditworthiness. The issuer will also regularly review your account to decide whether you’re eligible to get your security deposit back.

Who is the Bank of America® Travel Rewards Secured Credit Card good for?

The BoA Travel Rewards Secured is good for someone who wants to use the card for travel, especially for international travel as it doesn’t charge a foreign transaction fee.

Who shouldn’t get the BoA Travel Rewards Secured?

If your interest is cash-back, this card isn’t a good fit for you as points are only worth .6 cents each for cash vs 1 cent each for travel.

Bank of America® Travel Rewards Secured Credit Card: Points

With the Travel Rewards Secured, there’s not much to remember when it comes to rewards: You’ll earn a flat rewards rate of 1.5 points for every $1 you spend on all purchases.

The card does not offer a new customer bonus.

How to redeem Bank of America® Travel Rewards Secured Credit Card points

When you’re ready to redeem your rewards, you’ll get less flexibility than you would with a traditional travel credit card. You won’t be able to transfer them to a hotel or airline partner or use them to book flights or hotel stays through a travel portal. Instead, you can use points to cover past travel purchases, get a statement credit, or purchase gift cards.

Get a travel statement credit

To redeem points, you have the option to receive a statement credit to cover qualifying travel and dining expenses such as airlines, hotels, and car rentals, incurred within the last 12 months.

However, this statement credit is limited to the most recent 2,500 qualifying transactions in these categories. With this redemption method, the exchange rate is straightforward: One point equals one cent.

Earn cash-back and buy gift cards

You can turn your points into real money by getting a check, having them electronically deposited into your Bank of America® checking or savings account, or getting them credited to an eligible Cash Management Account® with Merrill.

Keep in mind that by redeeming points for cash, you won’t be maximizing their value. One point is valued at 0.6 cents, meaning 2,500 points will only get you $15. As for gift cards, their redemption value can vary.

Rates and fees

  • Purchase APR: 28.24% variable
  • Annual fee: $0
  • Foreign transaction fee: None

Additional benefits

Free FICO score. Through online and mobile banking, you can access your FICO score, which is updated monthly, for free.

Credit cards similar to Bank of America® Travel Rewards Secured Credit Card

If covering travel expenses with rewards isn’t your priority, explore the Capital One Quicksilver Secured—a card closely mirroring the Travel Rewards card. The choice boils down to personal preference: Do you want a travel-focused Bank of America card or a cash-back Capital One card?

Capital One Quicksilver Secured Cash Rewards Credit Card vs. Bank of America® Travel Rewards Secured Credit Card

The Capital One Quicksilver Secured Cash Rewards Credit Card and Bank of America Travel Rewards are similar cards with identical rewards structures, minimum opening deposits, and fees. With the Quicksilver, you’ll pay no annual or foreign transaction fees and earn 1.5% cash back on every purchase.

Similar to the Travel Rewards Card, you’ll need to make a $200 minimum deposit to open a Quicksilver card. By making on-time and in full payments on your Quicksilver card, you could get back your deposit and graduate to an unsecured Quicksilver card. Plus, every six months, Capital One will automatically consider you for a credit limit increase without having to put any extra money down.

While the Travel Rewards Card emphasizes rewards redemption for travel-related expenses, Quicksilver rewards can primarily be redeemed for cash-back or gift cards.

Is the Bank of America® Travel Rewards Secured Credit Card right for you?

The Bank of America Travel Rewards Secured Credit Card is best suited for those who don’t need lots of bells and whistles and are focused on establishing or improving their credit scores. The card also has a low barrier to entry: You’ll just need to make a minimum security deposit of $200 to open a card.

This card, however, is likely not a good fit if you’re not interested in credit building and want a flashier travel credit card with benefits like a hefty welcome bonus and luxurious perks.

Frequently asked questions

Is it hard to get a bank of america® travel rewards secured credit card.

While Bank of America does not disclose what credit score you need to qualify for the Travel Rewards Secured card, since it’s a secured card meant for credit building, you won’t need a good credit score to be eligible.

What is the credit limit for a Bank of America® Travel Rewards Secured Credit Card?

The credit limit for the Bank of America Travel Rewards Secured card is determined by the security deposit, which can be as low as $200 and as high as $5,000.

Can I get denied for a secured credit card with Bank of America?

Though secured credit cards are intended for credit building, Bank of America may reject some secured card applicants due to a lack of credit history, a poor credit score, bankruptcy, and more.

  • Citi ThankYou points are valuable because the program partners with 14 airlines and 3 hotel chains.
  • Citi's hotel partner programs are Choice Privileges, Wyndham Rewards, and Accor Live Limitless.
  • Other partners include JetBlue, Air France-KLM, Singapore Airlines, and Cathay Pacific.

Overview of Citi Points Transfer

Earning transferable points with rewards credit cards is one of the best strategies you can use to maximize returns on your spending. Programs like Chase Ultimate Rewards ® and Amex Membership Rewards are popular with award travelers, in part because their transfer partners include numerous domestic airlines and popular hotel chains.

The Citi ThankYou Rewards program is a bit of an underdog in this regard, with just one domestic carrier (JetBlue) among airline transfer options.

Benefits of Transferring Citi Points

Despite having few domestic airline options, you can still squeeze excellent value from the program — in fact, some of Citi's international airline transfer partners offer lucrative sweet spots that allow you to book award flights for far less than other frequent flyer programs charge.

In addition, the program added Choice Privileges, Wyndham Rewards, and most recently Accor Live Limitless (ALL) to its partner roster, marking the first hotel transfer options since Hilton left the program several years ago.

That's on top of the numerous other ways to use your rewards points, like booking travel directly through the Citi ThankYou Travel Portal or cashing in rewards for gift cards and merchandise. These options are available to any ThankYou Rewards cardholder, but to unlock the ability to transfer points to all of Citi's airline partners, you'll need to have the Citi Premier® Card or Citi Prestige® Card (no longer available to new applicants) in your wallet.

Best Airline Transfer Partners

As with most transferable points programs, there are definitely some partners that are better than others. Depending on the partner and how you redeem your points, the value you get from your transfer can vary significantly.

Here's a look at the best Citi airline transfer partners.

Turkish Airlines Miles & Smiles

It may seem strange that one of the best uses of Citi ThankYou points is transferring to a European airline that most people are likely never to fly. But the real value of Turkish Airlines miles lies in using the Miles & Smiles frequent flyer program to book award flights on its Star Alliance partners.

For example, the Miles & Smiles partner award chart requires only 10,500 Turkish miles for an economy-class flight anywhere within the US, including Hawaii, on Star Alliance partner United Airlines. If you booked the exact same flight through the United MileagePlus frequently flyer program, you'd pay 25,000 United miles.

Using the Miles & Smiles program does take a bit of patience as its online booking site can be hard to navigate, but cheap award prices like these can make it worth the extra effort.

Air France-KLM Flying Blue

Air France and KLM share the Flying Blue frequent flyer program, and one of the best uses of Flying Blue miles is its recurring promo rewards. Each month, Flying Blue publishes a list of routes with a 25 to 50% discount on mileage costs. This can be a great way to stretch the value of your ThankYou points.

Rates for a one-way economy flight from the US to Europe range from about 15,000 to 30,000 Flying Blue miles. The number of miles required varies quite a bit depending on the date and if the route is on a monthly promo award. Keep in mind Flying Blue adds more taxes and fees than other programs, so you'll have to weigh the savings in miles and the increased cash cost.

Because it's a transfer partner of all of the major transferable rewards currencies, Flying Blue is a great place to combine points balances from different programs.

Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer

Singapore Airlines is also a member of the Star Alliance, which means that you can use KrisFlyer miles to book travel on partner airlines like United, Air Canada, and Lufthansa.

In fact, using Singapore Airlines is also cheaper than using United's own miles for flights anywhere in the continental US to Hawaii. Singapore also has a non-alliance partnership with Alaska Airlines, and you can use as few as 11,500 KrisFlyer miles to get to Hawaii as well.

For luxury aficionados, Singapore Airlines also flies the ultra-premium Singapore Suites first class on certain routes. Singapore rarely opens up award seats in Suites Class to partner airlines, so transferring to KrisFlyer is often the only way to book these bucket-list awards.

Virgin Atlantic Flying Club

Although Virgin Atlantic is headquartered in the UK, its mileage program offers a fair amount of value for US travelers. You'll often get the best deal from Virgin Atlantic miles when you book award flights on its SkyTeam partners, like Delta.

Because Delta no longer publishes an award chart, the cost of a flight in Delta SkyMiles can vary wildly depending on the route, date, and number of stops. Before you book an award flight using your Delta miles, it pays to check with Virgin Atlantic. It is quite common that the exact same Delta flight will cost fewer miles if you book with Flying Club miles.

Avianca LifeMiles

Avianca is also a member of the Star Alliance, which means that you can use its miles to book partners like United, Lufthansa, and Ethiopian Airlines. Avianca's award chart divides the US into three separate regions, with flights within a region requiring only 7,500 Avianca Lifemiles to book. Some US airline frequent flyer programs would charge 12,500 miles or more for the exact same flights.

Avianca also offers regular promotions that offer huge (150% or more) bonuses on buying or transferring LifeMiles. This can make it easy to top off your balance if you just need a few more miles to book your next trip.

Good Citi Airline Transfer Partners

Some Citi airline transfer partners can provide decent value, but only in certain situations.

Etihad Guest

Etihad is not a member of any airline alliance but has a number of non-alliance partnerships that can provide good value for your Citi ThankYou points. These include Czech Airways (Prague to Seoul in business class for 25,610 Etihad Guest miles) and Royal Air Maroc (New York-JFK to Casablanca for 22,000 miles in economy or 44,000 miles in business class).

Cathay Pacific Asia Miles

Cathay Pacific is a member of the Oneworld alliance and has a distance-based award chart. The number of miles you need will depend on whether you are flying only Cathay Pacific or if you are flying one of its Oneworld partners, like American Airlines or British Airways. A flight from Los Angeles to Hong Kong on Cathay Pacific is only 27,000 miles in economy or 84,000 miles in business class.

Qantas Frequent Flyer

Like Cathay Pacific, Qantas is also a member of the Oneworld alliance and also has a distance-based award chart. The best value for using Qantas miles is on short flights under 600 flown miles on either Qantas or Oneworld partners like American Airlines. These short flights can be had for only 8,000 Qantas miles.

JetBlue TrueBlue

The number of points required for a JetBlue award flight is directly tied to the cash price of a ticket, so it's hard to get outsized value from your TrueBlue points. Still, it is possible to save points by transferring your Citi ThankYou points to JetBlue instead of using them directly to book a paid flight through the Citi portal.

Remember that JetBlue is the only Citi airline transfer partner that you can use without having the Citi Premier® Card or Citi Prestige® Card (though at a lesser ratio of 1,000 ThankYou points to 800 JetBlue points).

Citi Airline Transfer Partners That Aren't Great Value

The rest of the Citi ThankYou airline transfer partners are generally not worth considering, except for extremely niche redemptions.

Aeromexico Club Premier

Aeromexico uses kilometers instead of miles, so its award chart is generally inflated by 1.6x compared to other programs. While other bank program points, such as Amex Membership Rewards , transfer to Aeromexico at a rate of 1:1.6, Citi transfers at only 1:1.

Eva Air Infinity MileageLands

The award chart for Eva Air Infinity MileageLands is not spectacular when compared to most other airline programs, and you'll generally find better value elsewhere. Eva Air does have some generous stopover allowances, though you can't book stopovers online — instead, you'll need to call the airline directly.

Emirates Skywards

While Emirates first-class cabins are among the best in the world, it's best to use partner miles to book these awards. While Emirates recently reduced the astronomical fuel surcharges they charge on Skywards award tickets, there are other mileage programs that offer better value.

Qatar Airways Privilege Club

Like fellow Gulf carrier Emirates, Qatar has a great premium cabin flight experience that is best booked with partner miles. In Qatar's case, rather than transferring Citi ThankYou points to Qatar Airways Privilege Club, it's better to use American Airlines AAdvantage miles to fly on Qatar Airways.

Thai Airways Royal Orchid Plus

Thai Airways is currently in the middle of bankruptcy, spurred on at least in part by the limited travel demand due to the pandemic. And while bankruptcy does not mean that your Royal Orchid Plus miles would all of a sudden become worthless, it does give you one more reason to avoid transferring your ThankYou points here.

Hotel Partners

It's possible to get decent value from Citi's hotel partners, Choice, Wyndham, and Accor, but because many of their brands are budget-friendly, you might be better off saving your points and paying cash instead. It's also possible to redeem Citi ThankYou points at a rate of 1 cent apiece for stays at these chains by booking through the Citi Travel Portal.

Accor Live Limitless (ALL)

Citi's newest transfer partner is Accor Live Limitless (ALL), which comprises 45 brands across over 5,000 properties worldwide. Accor hotels include Fairmont, Raffles, Sofitel, SLS, and Swisshotel, but most of its properties are located outside the US, making this a better deal for international travelers.

This transfer option is only available to Citi Premier and Prestige cardholders, with a transfer ratio of 2:1 (2 Citi points equals 1 Accor point). Accor doesn't have an award chart; instead, you can redeem points in 2,000-point increments toward a stay discount, where 2,000 points equal 40 euros off your bill. That makes Accor points worth just over 2 cents each, but since there's a 2:1 transfer ratio from Citi, you'll only get a value of just over 1 cent per Citi point (depending on the current exchange rate).

Choice Privileges

The loyalty program of Choice Hotels, Choice Privileges includes brands like Comfort Inn, Quality Inn, Clarion, Cambria, and Ascend Collection hotels. Award prices start at 8,000 points per night and go up to 35,000 points per night, with a few exceptions. Rates also vary depending on the season and even the day of the week you stay.

If you have the Citi Premier® Card or Citi Prestige® Card, the transfer ratio is 1:2 (1 ThankYou point equals 2 Choice points), with transfers in 1,000-point increments. The no-annual-fee Citi Rewards+® Card and Citi ThankYou® Preferred Card have a transfer ratio of 1:1.5 (1 ThankYou points equals 1.5 Choice points), with transfers also in 1,000-point increments. And if you have the Citi® Double Cash Card , you also have the ability to transfer to Choice at a 1:1.5 ratio.

Wyndham Rewards

Wyndham Rewards includes familiar brands like Super 8, Days Inn, Howard Johnson, and Travelodge — as well as over 40,000 vacation rentals through its partnership with Vacasa.

With the Citi Premier® Card or Citi Prestige® Card, you'll get a 1:1 transfer ratio to Wyndham. Otherwise, with the Citi Rewards+® Card, Citi ThankYou® Preferred Card, and Citi® Double Cash Card, the ratio is 5:4 (1,000 Citi ThankYou points = 800 Wyndham points).

Wyndham's award structure is simple — you'll pay 7,500, 15,000, or 30,000 points for an award night, depending on the property. With Vacasa vacation rentals, you'll pay these fixed points rates per listed bedroom.

Other Rewards Programs

In addition to airline and hotel transfer partners, Citi ThankYou has one retail transfer partner.

Sears Shop Your Way

You can transfer your Citi ThankYou points to Sears Shop Your Way points at a rate of 1:10. Shop Your Way points are worth 0.1 cents each, and Sears does sell some third-party gift cards that you can buy with Shop Your Way points.

This would allow you to effectively redeem your Citi ThankYou points for 1 cent per point for gift cards (or other merchandise) available for purchase at Sears. Unless you already have Sears Shop Your Way points and need to top off your account for a redemption, it's easier to redeem Citi ThankYou points directly for gift cards through the ThankYou portal.

Transferring your Citi ThankYou points is a fairly straightforward process. Once you log into your account at thankyou.com, find "More Ways To Redeem" in the top header, then choose "Points Transfer." Or, select "Transfer & Share" in the main menu under "See everything that can be done with ThankYou Points."

After you've selected "Points Transfer," you'll then see a list of Citi transfer partner options available to you. It's important to note that the first and last names on your ThankYou account and the account you're transferring to must match in order to be able to transfer.

If you're looking for an all-purpose travel credit card with strong rewards, many ways to use your points, and an annual fee under $100, the Citi Premier should be on your shortlist. Beyond the welcome bonus offer, the Citi Premier® Card offers great 3x earning categories that just about anyone can take advantage of — and the rewards it earns are incredibly flexible.

For most of these partners, the transfer ratio is 1:1, with transfers in 1,000-point increments. The only exception for Citi Premier and Prestige cardholders is Accor (2:1). For other cardholders, JetBlue, Choice, and Wyndham, which are the only transfer partners available (along with Sears Shop Your Way rewards) if you don't have a Citi Premier® Card or Citi Prestige® Card have transfer ratios and availability that vary depending on the card you have.

It's important to note that ThankYou points transfers are one-way and nonrefundable — once you move ThankYou points to a partner, you can not transfer them back to ThankYou Rewards.

How to Earn Citi ThankYou points

You can earn Citi ThankYou points through welcome bonuses and spending on a variety of different Citi credit cards , including:

Remember, you can only access all of Citi's transfer partners if you have the Citi Premier® Card or Citi Prestige® Card. If you have multiple Citi ThankYou credit cards, you can combine your points into one ThankYou account.

Citi points can be transferred to a variety of airline and hotel partners, but not all airlines or hotels are partners. It's important to check the current list of Citi transfer partners for available options.

Transfer times vary by partner. While some transfers are instant, others may take several days to process. It's advisable to plan ahead if you need to use transferred points for specific bookings.

Once transferred, points are subject to the expiration policies of the partner program. This means they could expire if not used within the timeframe set by the partner.

Generally, there are no fees for transferring points from Citi to its partners, but it's always best to confirm any potential costs directly with Citi before making a transfer.

The best use of transferred points varies depending on personal travel preferences, the specific transfer partner, and the value of flights or hotel stays. Comparing redemption options can help maximize value.

What is Capital One Travel?

Capital One Travel is an online booking experience for Capital One rewards credit cardholders in partnership with Hopper. It launched in 2021 to make trip planning and travel enjoyable and hassle free for eligible Capital One cardholders.

Capital One Travel sorts through thousands of options to help you get Capital One’s best prices for flights, hotels and car rentals and confidently book your travel online. 1 As a bonus, eligible cardholders can earn extra rewards when booking through Capital One Travel.

Capital One Travel features and benefits

Cardholders can sign in to Capital One Travel to compare prices and book flights, hotels and rental cars. But that’s just the start.

You’ll have access to unique tools and offers before and after you book, giving you a rewarding, flexible travel experience. Here’s a closer look at some of the benefits of Capital One Travel:

Cancel your flight for any reason

Need to make your travel booking more flexible? For a small fee when booking, you can add the option to cancel your flight for any reason.

This option gives you the ability to cancel your flight up to a set time within your scheduled departure. Capital One Travel will issue a refund—typically 70%-90% of the ticket price—to your original payment method.

Sometimes, you’ll also have the option to choose an airline credit worth 100% of your original ticket cost instead of the refund. Airline credit availability depends on the airline’s policies. If you choose this option, Capital One Travel will still cover any related cancellation or rebooking fees. 2

Freeze the price of a flight

Want a little extra time to decide on a flight but don’t want to stress about the price going up? For some flights offered through Capital One Travel, you can “freeze” the price for a specific period of time by paying a small fee.

When you freeze the price of the flight, Capital One Travel will hold that price for you until the expiration date of your frozen price. That expiration date will be given to you before completing your purchase.

If the price of the flight increases after you freeze it (and before your frozen price expires), Capital One Travel will cover any fare increase up to your maximum refund limit. And if the price goes down, you’ll pay the current lower price. 3

Earn bonus rewards

When you book that fabulous hotel room for the weekend or reserve a car rental for a scenic drive, you’re earning extra rewards you can put toward your next trip.

Venture X and Venture X Business cardholders get 10X miles on hotels and rental cars and 5X miles on flights booked through Capital One Travel.

And when booking through Capital One Travel with other eligible U.S.-issued Capital One cards, earn 5X miles or 5% cash back on hotels and car rentals, depending on the card:

  • Travel credit cards : Venture, VentureOne
  • Cash back credit cards : Quicksilver, QuicksilverOne, Quicksilver for Good Credit, Quicksilver Student, Quicksilver Secured and Capital One Walmart Rewards® Card
  • Dining and entertainment credit cards : Savor, SavorOne, SavorOne Student, SavorOne for Good Credit
  • Business credit cards : Spark Miles, Spark Miles Select, Spark Cash Select, Spark Classic, Spark Cash Plus

Get price prediction and price watch alerts for flights

Looking for the best time to book flights? When you search for flights on Capital One Travel, you’ll see a recommendation to either book now or wait for a better price. Capital One Travel uses artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze billions of data points and predict how flight prices will fluctuate.

To get started, you can set a price alert for the destination and dates you’re interested in flying. Capital One Travel will monitor prices 24/7 and let you know when it’s time to book. With help from our price predictions and alerts, you can save an average of 15% on flights. 4

Get free price drop protection for flights

Did you book a flight to visit loved ones based on Capital One Travel recommendations? If you booked at a recommended time, Capital One Travel will keep watching the price for 10 days. If it drops, you get up to $50 in travel credit for the difference. 5

Get Capital One Travel's best prices, guaranteed

If you find a better price on the same flight, hotel or car rental, Capital One Travel will match it. Simply submit a request within 24 hours of booking with us, and Capital One Travel will give you a travel credit for the difference. For hotels, we also proactively adjust our prices to guarantee they match or beat other travel sites. 6

Redeem rewards for travel

Have you been saving up your rewards? Apply them to any trip booked through Capital One Travel. Or use a combination of rewards and your card when booking. The choice is yours.

Stay in style

Elevate your stay with rooftop drinks, meals at signature restaurants, room service and other unique amenities when you book with the Premier Collection or Lifestyle Collection . The collections also include a $50 or $100 experience credit (depending on the collection) and other premium benefits like room upgrades, early check-in and late checkout when available—all to make it even easier to upgrade your next getaway. 7

Here's how to earn credit card rewards while doing your taxes

Paying with the right credit card can earn you an almost-free vacation or significant cash back..

thumbnail

Tax season is in full swing. As you file your return, you may consider paying your taxes by credit card . After all, doing so can earn you travel rewards or cash back on your taxes.

Paying taxes with a credit card may not be the best idea for everyone, so you'll first want to determine whether it's a good choice for your situation. Once you've decided paying by credit card is right for you, don't just reach for your rewards credit card that only awards 1 point per dollar or 1% cash back on your purchases. Instead, consider how you can maximize your potential credit card rewards.

Below, CNBC Select goes over some of the best ways to boost your credit card rewards when paying your taxes and explains how you can stack deals for buying tax preparation software to save money and earn rewards.

What we'll cover

How to pay your taxes with a credit card, open a new travel credit card with a welcome bonus, use a credit card that offers a high cash-back rate.

  • Use a credit card that offers bonuses for meeting spending thresholds
  • Check out online shopping portals and look for credit card merchant offers

Bottom line

There are three IRS-approved third-party payment processors for credit card payments. All the processors accept cards from the major credit card networks, including Visa , Mastercard , Discover® and American Express . Each payment processing company charges different fees.

These are the three payment processors and their fees:

  • PayUSAtax.com : 1.82% (minimum $2.69)
  • Pay1040.com : 1.87% (minimum $2.50)
  • ACI Payments, Inc. : 1.98% (minimum $2.50)

Keep in mind that if you pay your business taxes with a credit card, the card processing fees are also tax deductible. However, individuals cannot deduct the fees from their personal tax return.

Having a planned large expense (like a big tax payment) is a great time to apply for a new credit card since most welcome offers require you to spend several thousand dollars to earn the bonus. Many travel rewards credit cards have big sign-up bonuses that can earn you enough points or miles to redeem for an almost-free vacation .

Some top travel rewards cards with the largest welcome offers include the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card (see rates and fees ), Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and The Platinum Card® from American Express . Depending on how you redeem your rewards, you can potentially earn over $1,000 in value from these bonuses if you meet the requirements.

If you're not interested in travel rewards, consider opening a new credit card that gives cash back on your purchases and using that card to pay your taxes. If you open a cash-back card that offers a welcome bonus and at least 2% cash back on your purchases, you'll essentially keep some money in your pocket after taking into account the processing fee charged by the payment companies.

Many popular cash-back credit cards also offer promotional 0% APR financing for up to 21 months. Using a 0% APR card can be a smart tax-paying strategy if you need extra time to pay off your bill.

Cards to consider include the Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card (earns unlimited 2% cash rewards on purchases), the Citi Double Cash® Card (earns 1% back when you purchase and 1% back when you pay) and the Bank of America® Unlimited Cash Rewards Card (if you qualify for the highest tier of BofA's Preferred Rewards program, you'll earn 2.62% back, otherwise it's a 1.5% back card).

Use a credit card with bonuses for meeting spending thresholds

If opening a new credit card isn't an option, you can pay your taxes with one of your existing credit cards with a bonus for meeting a high spending threshold. With this strategy, you may earn airline or hotel elite status, airline companion certificates or free hotel night certificates just by using the right card to pay your taxes.

Here are some examples:

  • You can earn American AAdvantage Loyalty Points that go toward qualifying for elite status with the Citi®/AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard® or the AAdvantage® Aviator® Red World Elite Mastercard® . Elite status begins at 40,000 Loyalty Points for Gold status and you earn 1 point per dollar for credit card spending. The Aviator card also earns a companion certificate for one guest at $99 plus taxes and fees each anniversary year when you spend $20,000.
  • You can earn 25 Premier qualifying points (PQP) for every $500 in net card spending in a calendar year, up to a maximum of 1,000 PQP with the United℠ Explorer Card . The points can be applied toward qualifying for United Premier status up to and including the Premier 1K level.
  • The Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card earns a free night certificate when you spend $15,000 in a calendar year. Complimentary Hilton Gold elite status comes with having the card, but you can be bumped up to Diamond elite status by spending $40,000 in a year. Terms apply.
  • The World of Hyatt Credit Card comes with a Category 1 to 4 free night certificate given each anniversary year, but you can also earn a second free night by spending $15,000. Complimentary Discoverist status comes with having the card, but you also earn two elite night credits for every $5,000 spent, which can go toward elevating your status to Explorist or Globalist.

Check online shopping portals and look for credit card merchant offers

If you are preparing your tax return and have decided to buy tax software to help you find all the deductions you may qualify for, be sure to first click through an online shopping portal before making your purchase.

By using a shopping portal , you can earn bonus points, miles or cash back from various rewards or loyalty programs. The bonus points or cash back is in addition to anything you earn from spending on the card itself.

Some examples of shopping portal offers available at the time of this writing include:

  • 1,000 Southwest Rapid Reward points for TurboTax through the Southwest Rapid Rewards shopping portal
  • 6 American AAdvantage miles per dollar for H&R Block through the American Airlines AAdvantage shopping portal
  • 10% cash back for TaxAct through TopCashBack
  • Up to 25% cash back or 25 American Express Membership Rewards points for TaxSlayer through Rakuten

You can use a shopping portal aggregator like Cashback Monitor to compare rewards earnings on tax prep software to see which program may offer the highest return. Offers change frequently and sometimes without advance notice, so if you see a high offer, it's best to jump on it. You may also see increased offers the closer we get to the tax filing deadline on April 15.

You can combine, or "stack," the shopping portal rewards with a discount from any card-linked offers you may have. Limited-time card-linked offers, such as Chase Offers, Amex Offers , Citi Merchant Offers and BankAmeriDeals provide savings at select merchants when you link your associated credit card to that offer. They can be found in your online account with the card issuer.

Credit card merchant offers are targeted, meaning the same offer may not be available for everyone with that card, and require enrollment, but here are some tax prep software offers we've seen in the past:

  • Amex Offer of spend $500 or more, get $100 on TurboTax Live Small Business Tax Preparation
  • Amex Offer of 30% back, up to a total of $60, on your TaxAct purchase
  • Chase Offer of $10 cash back on TurboTax when you spend $25 or more, plus get additional savings up to 10% at checkout when you purchase through Chase's link
  • Chase Offer of $7 cash back on your TaxAct purchase
  • Citi Merchant Offer of 25% back, up to a total of $60, on your TaxAct purchase
  • Citi Merchant Offer of $10 back from TurboTax on a purchase of $25 or more, plus extra savings when you purchase through Citi's link

Be sure to add the offer to your credit card before making your purchase and check the fine print for any exclusions.

Paying your taxes with a credit card is quick and easy, but it's important to take some time to plan how you can maximize your rewards earnings. Some ways to earn more points, miles or cash back during tax season include signing up for a new credit card or using one you may already have that offers bonuses for high spending thresholds . Be sure to only charge what you can pay back in full to avoid paying interest. If not, any interest payments will likely negate the rewards you've earned.

Whether or not you owe any taxes, there are also ways to earn rewards and potentially save a little money if you are planning to purchase tax preparation software.

Meet the Artist Delighting Amsterdam

Thanks to a street artist named Frank “Frankey” de Ruwe, a wander through the Dutch capital may lead to a playful discovery or two.

  • Published March 1, 2024 Updated March 12, 2024

In the spring of 2020, at the height of the pandemic, the always bustling Dam Square in Amsterdam was deserted, silent and surrounded by concrete counterterrorism blocks. The Dutch street artist Frank de Ruwe, who goes by the name of Frankey, decided these daunting studded blocks resembled something more innocent — giant Lego blocks — and that the city needed something to lighten the gloom.

The result? Later that summer, Frankey created and placed a giant yellow-and-black Lego figure of the Dutch folk singer André Hazes, whose songs have been pub favorites in the Netherlands for more than 40 years.

An enormous yellow-and-black Lego figurine, wearing a black hat and black sunglasses, sits on a studded concrete block in the middle of a city square.

“It’s all about seeing the right thing,” Frankey said recently, over coffee in his Amsterdam neighborhood. “I think everyone was searching for a bit of bright news during these dark days.”

Frankey continues to delight Amsterdam with his whimsical, witty street art. Yes, every Saturday, he publishes a new piece in the Dutch newspaper Het Parool , as well on Instagram , but those are just the tip of the iceberg. He turns any unassuming spot in the city — a street sign, an oddly shaped brick, a ledge — into something more playful. You’re bound to run into his work on any trip to Amsterdam.

This conversation has been edited and condensed for clarity.

In the press, your street art pieces are called ‘urban interventions.’ What does that term mean to you?

I just want to make people smile with my work, that’s the greater good. A 6-year-old and a 90-year-old can smile at the same thing; it’s amazing that you brighten someone’s day with just one object. It’s so easy to be a bit more friendly in the streets, and I think that’s what I’m doing. And if people want to call them urban interventions, I’m cool with that. It feels a bit like a buzzword, but people have been making fun stuff to brighten up the streets for centuries — it’s always been there. I’m just one of those guys who’s also doing that.

When you leave your art on the street, is it legal?

No. It’s illegal. I do have some rules for myself, because I love Amsterdam a lot. I don’t want to harm the city at all, so all the pieces I make can be removed quite easily without leaving any damage. I work a lot with magnets and tie wraps — I probably own every type of double-sided tape in the world. Sometimes I may not know how to construct a piece without using screws or kits or whatever. Then it becomes a nice challenge to connect it so it’s still safe and people could remove it easily. But it’s still illegal.

Do you know what happens to your pieces when they are removed?

Sometimes the streets just get cleaned, and the cleaner doesn’t even notice there was a piece of art to begin with. There’s also a group of people collecting the art to sell online, thinking my work is worth some money. But what I really like is that I’ve seen government vehicles with my work on their dashboard. So they removed it, but kept it as a trophy. But if people want to take it away or take it home — it’s all fine with me. I think it’s a win-win. Even if it’s gone.

What is your method to place your pieces on the street?

I always do it during the day. And I wear one of those orange jackets with fluorescent stripes, so I look like a guy working with the municipality. Whenever I do a big piece and need some space, I bring some orange traffic cones with me. It’s been my method for 20 years and I still get away with that one.

I’ve read that you carry a fake permit. Is that true?

It’s just a piece of paper with a lot of stamps, saying “I, Frank de Ruwe, give a permit to Street Art Frankey to place so-and-so …” But it looks somewhat official because of its layout and because I always add a lot of appendixes. You’ll have an officer standing there with all these papers, all with date stamps — which by the way, say “Frankey official” around the date — and they think: “If it’s got a stamp, it must be official.” It’s the same with the orange jacket.

You’ve done so many pieces. Which one is your favorite?

I was really proud that I was able to make our former mayor for Paradiso, the music venue. The best musicians in the world have played there. It’s an old church, right in the city center — it’s a cultural temple. When I heard that it might not stay a music venue forever, I thought that can’t be possible! It’s such a part of Amsterdam. And our former mayor, Eberhard van der Laan, who was so beloved, was also really into arts and culture.

So I made a little bronze sculpture of him, and he’s sitting on top of Paradiso, holding the building and protecting it with a little smile. And every time I go there, I look up and say: “Yeah, this is a good spot, protect that building.” I have a lot of pieces I don’t check out whenever I pass them. But I’m really proud of that one.

The best ways to redeem Capital One miles for domestic flights

When Capital One introduced airline transfer partners , it was a game-changer for Capital One miles collectors. It provided an opportunity for bargain hunters to squeeze even more value from the rewards earned on cards like the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card.

There are now 14 frequent-flyer programs to which you can transfer your miles, most at a 1:1 ratio . However, with no U.S. carriers on the list anymore, you'll have to know just how to leverage airline partnerships if you're looking to book a domestic flight.

In today's post, we'll examine the best options for transferring Capital One miles to airline partners when you need to book a domestic flight. And we'll also look at how to decide when to use this option versus redeeming Capital One miles at a fixed value .

Capital One transfer partners

Let's start with a high-level overview of the program's transfer partners and what it will take to book a flight within the U.S. Here's a chart that shows four key details:

  • How much does each carrier charge for a one-way domestic flight (economy / first class)
  • How many Capital One miles you'd need to transfer for each one-way award
  • Which domestic partner(s) are bookable through the carrier's program
  • Whether you can book those awards online

*Uses dynamic pricing and is often higher than award charts.

Just keep in mind that these partners have varying transfer times, so check out our guide to Capital One transfer times so you know how long you'll have to wait for your miles to post.

Best transfer options

That's a lot of information to take in. So, which programs are the best options for domestic flights? In no particular order:

British Airways Avios

British Airways' distance-based award chart has some sweet spots for short and medium-haul domestic flights operated by American or Alaska. Specifically, Zone 1 flights in the U.S. (up to 650 miles in distance) price at 7,500 miles in economy or 15,000 miles in business class and Zone 2 flights (up to 1,151 miles in distance) cost just 9,000 miles in economy or 16,500 miles in business class.

This opens up some valuable redemptions like New York-JFK to Miami (MIA) in a lie-flat seat for just 16,500 miles or Chicago O'Hare (ORD) to Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) for only 9,000 miles in economy. Additionally, you can book economy flights to Hawaii from several West Coast cities (less than 3,000 miles) for only 13,000 miles each way .

Etihad Guest

Another excellent option for domestic flights is Etihad Guest , which allows you to book American Airlines award flights for 12,500 miles each way in economy and 25,000 miles each way in first class. Both of these match American's saver award rates through the AAdvantage program, but unfortunately, you'll have to call to book.

Turkish Miles & Smiles

Turkish Miles & Smiles offers hands down the most generous domestic redemption awards on U.S. carriers of any award chart. It charges a flat 7,500 miles each way in economy or 12,500 miles each way in business class for any domestic route. This includes flights to Hawaii, premium transcontinental routes and flights to Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. These rates are a fraction of what United would typically charge for these flights.

Singapore KrisFlyer

Singapore KrisFlyer can be a great option for booking Alaska Airlines flights. Coach flights start at just 7,500 miles each way and top out at 12,500 miles, including Hawaii and Alaska. You will have to call to book, though. And don't bother considering first-class awards, as you'll need to use anywhere from 17,500 to 47,000 miles each way and Alaska doesn't offer lie-flat seats.

The KrisFlyer program also partners with United, but you'll be much better off transferring to and booking with Turkish for these flights.

Decent options

travel partners for capital one

Some of Capital One's other partner programs have decent award rates. So, under certain circumstances, it could make sense to use these options:

Avianca LifeMiles

If you don't want to book through Turkish, you can also get great award rates on United with Avianca LifeMiles . The LifeMiles award chart divides the continental U.S. into three zones, and if your origin and destination are both in a single zone, you'll redeem just 7,500 miles each way.

In most cases, these will be short-haul United flights , but there are some geographic sweet spots. Here are some examples of flights that require 7,500 miles each way:

  • Colorado to California
  • Florida to Montana
  • Maine to South Carolina

Even better? Despite what the award chart says, Avianca prices some award flights at just 6,500 miles each way. Plus, awards between continental U.S. zones top out at just 12,500 LifeMiles each way in coach and 25,000 miles each way in business, including premium transcontinental routes.

Air Canada Aeroplan

Alternatively, the Aeroplan program can also be a solid option for United flights, especially since you can easily book partner awards online. Awards start at 6,000 miles each in economy class for flights of 500 miles or less and become more expensive as the distance increases.

While there are no fuel surcharges, Aeroplan does charge a CA$39 ($32) per-person partner booking fee. So you should only consider this option if you run into issues with Avianca LifeMiles or Turkish.

Related: How does Aeroplan's award chart compare to other Star Alliance programs?

Air France-KLM

Flying Blue has a dynamic award formula , so there's really no telling how many miles an award flight on Delta will require. However, they generally start at 11,500 Flying Blue miles each way in economy.

You should be able to book online, but the Flying Blue website is notoriously unreliable and has had issues displaying Delta-operated award flights in the past. If you're having trouble finding availability online, try to use mobile apps to beat Flying Blue restrictions on award searches .

Cathay Pacific Asia Miles

The Asia Miles program offers domestic award flights in economy class on both American and Alaska. You can book Alaska award online, but not American.

Redemption rates vary by route, but you can check the rates on Cathay's website for your specific route. For example, you can fly from New York-JFK to Los Angeles in economy for 15,000 miles or in first for 45,000 miles.

Emirates Skywards

With Alaska out of the picture , Emirates' only U.S. partner now is JetBlue. Domestically, you can book coach awards as well as Mint flights. The pricing is based on the route, but there is some good value to be found (see the award chart here ).

For instance, Mint awards on transcontinental routes cost 52,000 miles. By comparison, JetBlue's own TrueBlue program typically charges at least 82,200 TrueBlue points for transcontinental Mint awards. Even better, you can book these awards online.

Qantas Frequent Flyer

You can easily book awards on American Airlines using Qantas miles. Award rates start at 8,000 miles each way in economy class and 18,400 miles each way in domestic first class on two-cabin aircraft for flights of 600 miles or less. While those are decent rates, British Airways and Etihad offer slightly better award rates and should have access to the same inventory. So, you'll want to consider those options first.

Poor options

Some of Capital One's airline partners have such unfavorable award charts for their respective U.S. partners that it's difficult to imagine a situation where you should transfer miles to one of them for a domestic award:

When to transfer miles to partners versus when to redeem miles directly for travel

travel partners for capital one

The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card, Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card, Capital One Spark Miles for Business and Capital One Spark Miles Select for Business let you redeem your miles for one cent each as statement credits towards any travel purchase you've made within the last 90 days. So how do you decide when to transfer miles and when to redeem for recent travel purchases ?

T he information for the Capital One Spark Miles Select for Business has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

At its most basic, before you transfer, make sure the airline miles you'll be using will be worth more than one cent apiece for the award redemption you want. If not, you'll be better off simply redeeming your Capital One miles directly for travel as a statement credit. Here are five factors you should consider.

The easiest way to start looking for a domestic flight is to check your favorite airline's price and search an online travel agency for the lowest prices (or consider Google Flights for a quick snapshot).

As noted above, domestic round-trip economy awards booked through Turkish will require you to transfer 15,000 miles. As a result, if you find any highly-discounted fares for $150 round-trip or less, you should likely just book a paid fare and then redeem miles to offset your recent travel purchases.

Award availability

Next, look for award availability at the lowest mileage levels using the major domestic carriers' websites (American, Delta and United). When you find saver-level award space, you can use the chart above to see how many airline miles it will require.

travel partners for capital one

Factor in mileage earning and upgrade opportunities

When you redeem Capital One miles for recent travel purchases, you can book tickets the way you usually do.

That means you can earn miles from the flight and get credit towards elite status. If you currently hold elite status, you should still enjoy all of your elite status benefits, including being eligible for upgrades. You may not receive those benefits when you transfer your Capital One miles to an airline and book a partner award. To estimate the value of the miles you could earn, consult TPG's points and miles valuations .

One additional note: if you want to enjoy your free checked-bag benefits on United-operated flights through cards like the United Explorer Card, remember that you have to use your card to purchase the ticket. As a result, flights in this scenario would be a poor choice for redeeming for recent travel, as you'd still need to pay those checked bag fees .

Consider taxes and fees

All frequent-flyer programs will add security fees at a minimum, which will be $5.60 each way. However, Flying Blue has started adding additional surcharges to Delta awards , so remember this when using your miles. Similarly, Aeroplan charges a partner booking fee, albeit a low one of just CA$39 (US$32).

Think about the risks and hassle factors

When you are faced with the choice of redeeming miles for recent travel or transferring miles to frequent-flyer programs, consider the time it could cost you, especially if the airline doesn't offer online booking. You may have to create a new account and spend time calling the airline.

There's also the risk that the airline won't be able to see the award you want or that the award could disappear before you receive your airline miles . For these reasons, you should default to redeem miles toward recent travel when you won't save a lot of miles by transferring them -- especially when you aren't familiar with the frequent-flyer program.

Bottom line

Capital One took a significant step forward when it upgraded most transfer partners to a 1:1 transfer tier. After all, this redemption option significantly boosted the value of Capital One miles -- and the value of holding Capital One cards like the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card and Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card.

If you need to book flights within the U.S., Capital One's transfer partners give you various options, some with solid redemption rates. Just be sure to crunch the numbers to ensure you won't get a better value by redeeming miles for recent travel purchases.

A trip to Moscow

I'm going to organize a trip this summer. I want to plan everything. I’ll fly from London to Moscow, and I also want to visit St. Petersburg. Could you, please, advise me what places I should visit? I’ll stay in Moscow for about 10 days before going to St. Petersburg. Thank you!

Not a country I’d be spending my money in at the moment.

Ditto. Ditto!

I don't really see the point of shunning a country because you don't agree with its leader and/or its government. Would you go to Italy? China? Tourist dollars are more likely to get into the hands of the people rather than any corrupt bureaucracy and meeting friendly tourists might just change the locals opinions of foreigners and even give them some information they don't get from local news media.

Hopefully , I won't be starting a war here , but I must say I agree with Chani's comments . Having taken three year visas in 2015 , we have been to Moscow and St; Petersburg ( once to Moscow , and twice to St Petersburg ) . The History , Art , Music ( I am a classically trained musician ) and Culture , fascinate us . Much to experience there and advance preparation is essential , To get a good grounding for your visit , read this lavish and detailed book by Suzanne Massie , it's one of the best ways to immerse yourself in what you will experience - https://www.amazon.com/Land-Firebird-Beauty-Old-Russia/dp/096441841X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1521652009&sr=8-1&keywords=land+of+the+firebird+massie&dpID=51CPK13XKGL&preST=_SX218_BO1,204,203,200_QL40_&dpSrc=srch

And while leaders of such countries can point to foreign visitor numbers as a sign of support ? I also believe that personal safety for certain travellers, especially obvious minorities, cannot be guaranteed, as fervent nationalism increases, and tolerance levels evaporate. Just as I may decide against a purchase at the supermarket because of a company’s behaviour, ethics will always be a consideration.

Well, I'd argue supermarket ethics does not readily translate to travel ethics - the latter is far more complex. Personally, I see the whole "vote with my hard-earned travel dollar" approach as overly simplistic, but if it's your position - I totally respect it.

What I don't understand is members volunteering ethical guidance in response to what seems an innocuous request for travel-related information.

Note a discussion on ethics hosted a year ago by the Webmaster of this very forum.

I appreciate Rick Steves' point of view in his "Travel As A Political Act". That said, Putin's Russia is not a place I would support. But, to each his or her own....

From a practical point of view, travel between the two countries can be difficult. I understand the Russians who traveled in the US this past winter had to go to the US Embassy in the country of Georgia to get visas because the Russians expelled American embassy personnel. If you do travel to Russia, you may be on your own. See the American travel advisory: https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/traveladvisories/traveladvisories/russia-travel-advisory.html

Travel Advisory January 10, 2018 Russia – Level 3: Reconsider travel Reconsider travel to Russia due to terrorism and harassment. Some areas have increased risk. Read the entire Travel Advisory U.S. citizens are often victims of harassment, mistreatment, and extortion by law-enforcement and other officials. U.S. consular assistance to detained individuals is often unreasonably delayed by Russian officials. Russia also enforces special restrictions on dual U.S.-Russian nationals. Due to the Russian government-imposed reduction on U.S. diplomatic personnel in Russia, the U.S. government has reduced ability to provide services to U.S. citizens.

We have traveled to Moscow and St. Petersburg over the past few years. As in the US, most of the people we encountered helpful and not particularly political. In Moscow, we stayed at The Garden Ring Hotel which was a close walk to the metro. The hotel was very comfortable and quiet for being in the city. We loved the art museums and the Georgian restaurants. In St. Petersburg, we stayed at both The 3Mosta hotel near the Hermitage and the Art Hotel Demetra.. In St. Petersburg, we especially liked the Hermitage and Russian museum. Learning the Cyrillic alphabet and having a good map is a must.

As I think the point about ethical considerations has been made, please keep future replies more specific to the question at hand. Thanks.

Either read a good travel book or book a guide who can personally take you to the best places that interest you and tell about the sights you're seeing. We used Dan Petrov on 2 different trips to Moscow and found him to be wonderfully friendly and witty not to mention super knowledgeable.

Latest advice, Australian Governmemt, 1 April 2018. “Due to heightened political tensions, you should be aware of the possibility of anti-Western sentiment or harassment. While the Australian Government is not aware of any increased difficulties for Australians travelling in Russia at this time, you should follow the security and political situation closely and keep up to date with this travel advice. Remain vigilant, avoid any protests or demonstrations and avoid commenting publicly on political developments.”

We very much enjoyed our group trip to Moscow and St Petersburg last year. excellent guides and accommodations. While Steven who has replied here has excellent advice, ( and we took advantage of it), we felt an organized tour really facilitated our enjoyment of the country. You may want to consider a combination of an organized tour and than adding independent days . Some of the Australians on the tour had arrived a couple of days earlier than the tour stated and then some stayed later. If we were to go again (which I would), that"s how I would do it. And I must say , it was enlightening to have conversations with the Russian tour guides and the non Americans about the current world situation. Not that we went into any great depth, but I think we all went away with a little more understanding. Top places: allow lots of time in St Petersburg at the Hermitage- take a separate day for the Impressionist building. In Moscow, the Russian Art Museum was amazing.

Solid advice from Australian government quoted above, especially the keeping up to date part.

I checked the current version (Sep 18) of that advisory - and it hasn't been updated much. In fact, some sections don't seem to have changed since 2005 - their recommendations for importing/exporting currency and financial instruments, for example, are at least five years behind.

I do like reading governmental travel advisories for entertainment purposes - for instance, up until very recently the US one sternly advised potential travelers that Moscow was largely a cash-based economy (couldn't be further from the truth) and warned about intrinsic dangers of gypsy cabs (which had all but disappeared by 2015).
