Labor Day may mark the unofficial end of summer in the U.S. — but it’s hardly the end of airport crowds. In fact, given record-breaking crowds already this year, there’s a good chance this Labor Day weekend could be busier than any prior Labor Day weekend.

Already this summer, U.S. airports have set fresh passenger records. June 30, the Friday before July 4, marked a new record high of passengers on a single day when more than 2.884 million people passed through Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoints.

That figure topped the previous record of 2.882 million people from the Sunday after 2019’s Thanksgiving, according to a NerdWallet analysis of TSA data showing the number of passengers screened at U.S. TSA checkpoints over the last four years.

Roughly 12% more people passed through U.S. airports in June 2023 versus June 2022, which is perhaps unsurprising given the lingering effects of the pandemic through 2022.

The more impressive feat, though, is that 2023’s crowds have exceeded 2019 levels. TSA screened 0.6% more passengers in June 2023 versus June 2019, proving that summer is back and bigger than ever.

Expect Labor Day 2023 crowds to be no different, but some days around the long weekend are significantly busier than others.

The best and worst days to fly Labor Day weekend

TSA checkpoint data suggests most people use Labor Day — which is observed on the first Monday of September — as a long weekend. They depart on Friday, bask in two full days of vacation and return home on Monday.

To avoid crowds, and likely save money, book Labor Day travel on days that aren’t the start and end of the weekend. Based on an average of the past four years, here were the most to least crowded days for the week surrounding Labor Day, ranked:

Friday before Labor Day (most crowded).

Thursday before.

Labor Day Monday.

Sunday after.

Friday after.

Monday after.

Monday before.

Thursday after.

Tuesday after.

Wednesday before.

Sunday before.

Saturday before.

Wednesday after.

Tuesday before.

Saturday after (least crowded).

When broken out by pre- and post-Labor Day travel, here are the three least crowded days to travel ranked from least to most crowded:

Pre-holiday:

Tuesday before (overall least crowded day pre-holiday).

Post-holiday:

Saturday after (overall least crowded day post-holiday).

During the seven days after and before Labor Day (including the holiday itself), the Friday before Labor Day has been the single busiest day to fly over each of the past four years.

As far as the period starting on Labor Day itself and spanning the subsequent seven days, Labor Day Monday has been the busiest day to fly over the past three years. If Labor Day Monday is excluded from the rankings, the Sunday after has been the busiest over the past three years. In 2019, the trends were flipped: the Sunday after was the busiest, and the holiday itself was the second busiest.

The smarter, cheaper Labor Day weekend itinerary

If you work a standard Monday-Friday workweek and have the holiday off, leaving Friday after work and returning on Labor Day seems logical. But following the same itinerary as everyone else means you’ll likely pay — both in airfares and navigating airport crowds . For lighter crowds (and perhaps better deals), try these travel days instead:

Fly on the Tuesday or Wednesday before: Let Labor Day weekend become closer to a week by jetting off earlier than the folks leaving Thursday or Friday, assuming you have enough vacation days to use (or can work remotely ). You’ll have more time away from home and be more relaxed without the big airport crowds.

Travel on Saturday: Crowds are light on Saturdays before and after the holiday. So, rather than rushing out of work on Friday afternoon to catch a flight, opt for the morning flight the next day.

That Saturday morning flight might also reduce your risk of delays , too. According to travel booking site Hopper’s Flight Disruption Outlook for Spring 2023, flights departing after 9 a.m. are twice as likely to be delayed than departures scheduled from 5-8 a.m.

Fly home the Sunday before: While most folks fly home on Labor Day Monday, you might get a head start by flying home on Sunday. Sure, you’ll have one less vacation day than folks following your same itinerary departing Monday, but that’s not a bad thing. By returning Sunday night, you’ll have a whole day to refresh and prepare for the week ahead by doing laundry, meal prepping or catching up on potential jetlag. Sometimes the nicest way to relax is by taking a vacation from your vacation.

Consider travel insurance

If you are forking out the big dollars to travel this Labor Day weekend, consider booking your trip with a card that has travel insurance or purchasing a supplementary policy from a third-party insurance provider, like Allianz or World Nomads .

Travel insurance can help you get money back for canceled or interrupted trips, or cover flight delays, lost luggage or emergency evacuation.

Read the policy, though, as many plans come to your rescue only if you experience a covered reason.

Traveling this Labor Day weekend? Here's what to expect at the airport

Caroline Tanner

The unofficial end of summer is fast approaching, with Labor Day on the immediate horizon.

An estimated 12.6 million people are expected to hit U.S. airports this weekend, according to data from Hopper, an online travel agency and app that tracks the price of airfare, car rentals and hotel rooms.

When it comes to flights, Hopper pegs the average domestic Labor Day weekend airfare at $278 round-trip, which is a 23% increase over last year's numbers. However, it's certainly not a large enough jump to derail the plans of millions ready for one more summer getaway.

The Big Three U.S. airlines — American Airlines , Delta Air Lines and United Airlines — say they are preparing to fly between 2.5 million and 2.9 million passengers each. This means that U.S. airports and airlines will likely see somewhere between 9 and 12 million passengers.

If you are one of those millions packing your bags for vacation, here's what you can expect throughout the holiday travel weekend ... along with some tips for navigating any potential chaos at the country's busiest airports.

Busiest days for air travel: Sept. 1, 2 and 5

Nearly 13 million passengers are scheduled to fly from U.S. airports starting Thursday, Sept. 1, through Monday, Sept. 5; this is an average of 2.5 million travelers per day this weekend, based on Hopper's Labor Day 2022 Travel Guide .

As you might suspect, Hopper expects the Thursday and Friday before Labor Day, along with Labor Day itself, to be the busiest travel days of the weekend, as travelers head to and return from their destinations.

However, some airports also expect to see vacationers extending their trips beyond the typical four- or three-day weekend; many may be departing for extended celebrations beginning as early as Wednesday, Aug. 31, and not returning until Tuesday, Sept. 6, perhaps due to an increase in remote working and flexible travel schedules.

The three busiest airports this year are expected to be Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), Denver International Airport (DEN) and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX); this is per a second Labor Day travel report compiled by Hopper that examines airports specifically.

If you are one of the 1.6 million-plus passengers expected to travel through ATL from Sept. 1 to 6, airport officials say to arrive at least two hours early, particularly on Friday.

"Airport projections indicate Friday, Sept. 2 as the busiest day, with a little more than 300,000 passengers expected in ATL," an airport spokesperson said via email.

Not to mention, the usual tips and tricks to get through security faster — such as using Clear — don't always have the same time-saving impact in Atlanta as they do in other airports, likely because of a higher rate of use among travelers there.

busiest travel days labor day weekend

In an increase from last year, LAX expects to see an estimated 456,000 passengers — up from 398,000 passengers last year — depart this upcoming Thursday through Monday. Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) expects slightly more (481,000) arriving and departing passengers Wednesday through Tuesday.

"That's about 17% higher than the same period last year and 16% lower than 2019," per a PHL spokesperson. "The peak travel days for the Labor Day holiday weekend will be Thursday, Friday and Monday."

The Denver airport is projecting Thursday, Friday and Monday as the busiest days of the holiday travel period, matching what Hopper shows for national trends.

The airport anticipates nearly 67,000 passengers entering Transportation Security Administration checkpoints at DEN on Sept. 1, according to an airport spokesperson.

American anticipates 2.5 customers from Sept. 1 to 5 while United expects 2.6 million passengers from Sept. 1 to 6.

Although American's holiday flight schedule is similar to that of 2021 — with more than 26,400 scheduled flights for an average of nearly 5,300 daily departures — United has adjusted its schedule to accommodate a projected 20% increase in customers.

"During the Labor Day period, we anticipate approximately 2.6 million customers will travel with United," a spokesperson for the Chicago-based airline said. "This is nearly the same volume we had in 2019 and more than a 20% increase from last year, where ~2.1 million customers traveled with us during the same period [Sept. 1-6]."

United is the only one of the three largest U.S. airlines anticipating Labor Day volume mirroring pre-pandemic numbers.

Although Delta expects more Labor Day weekend flyers — between 2.8 and 2.9 million — than the other major airlines, these numbers don't quite meet Delta's pre-pandemic levels.

"Over the holiday weekend, Delta will operate over 25,000 flights," a Delta spokesperson shared via email. "For reference, Delta flew 3.1 million customers in 2019 and 2.5 million in 2021 over the same period of time."

Where are people going for Labor Day weekend?

busiest travel days labor day weekend

So where are all these people heading?

Among domestic destinations, the top five most booked locations via Hopper were Las Vegas, Denver, Atlanta, Miami and Los Angeles.

Internationally, users are favoring San Juan, Puerto Rico, as the top-booked destination (though, of course, it isn't exactly international for U.S. travelers). Multiple cities in Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Colombia are popular for travel this weekend, too.

"Over Labor Day weekend international travel will account for about 39% of travel over the holiday weekend, up 7 percentage points compared to last year in 2021," according to Hopper. This appears to support the expectations of airports, as both PHL and LAX noted an uptick among travelers opting to leave the country for the weekend.

"In addition to flying to domestic vacation locations (as they did in 2021), Philidelphia's passengers have demonstrated a strong desire to travel to international destinations in Europe, Mexico and the Caribbean this summer," an airport spokesperson said. International flight traffic at LAX has increased substantially as well.

"Available seats to many international destinations this weekend are two to three times higher than the same time last year, so it looks like a lot of people are taking one last summer trip overseas," an LAX spokesperson said.

Tips for staying sane during busy travel days

The combination of holiday weekends and full planes can bring little recourse if flight delays and cancellations start to pile up.

Before you even head to the airport, we suggest having a sense of alternate departing flights that day, just in case your flight is significantly delayed or canceled .

Along the same lines, make sure to download your airline's mobile app, many of which provide real-time flight updates. This will allow you to track your flight, get notified of flight changes and, in some cases, even chat with a representative regarding flight issues.

If you cannot reach an agent via the app or phone, follow the airline on social media and direct message them on Twitter or Instagram , where you might get a quicker response.

Being one of the first people to reach customer service can be essential when seats are in limited supply.

Additionally, regardless of which airport you're traveling through this weekend, we suggest arriving early to allow extra time for getting through security. At worst, you end up with more time in the lounge or at the gate.

As always, it helps to be enrolled in programs like TSA PreCheck and Clear, which can help you get through security faster.

Bottom line

Labor Day weekend will be another test for airlines before they head into the holiday travel season. Operational meltdowns were present on some busy travel weekends this summer, while others went mostly as planned.

"Compared to some of the chaos we saw earlier this summer, airlines have certainly turned in a better performance as the summer draws to a close," TPG senior aviation reporter Ethan Klapper said.

We are crossing our fingers for a busy — but smooth — holiday travel weekend.

TSA prepares Labor Day weekend travelers for busy airports, based on summer travel trends

WASHINGTON  — The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) expects to screen more than 14 million passengers during the Labor Day holiday weekend from Sept. 1, 2023 through Sept. 6, 2023. The busiest day is projected to be Sept. 1, 2023, when TSA expects to screen over 2.7 million travelers passing through security checkpoints.

The agency has screened about 227.5 million passengers since Memorial Day weekend, an average of 2.5 million per day. Travel volumes during this summer travel period are higher than 2019 during the same summer travel period, marking the busiest summer travel period on record.

“We anticipate this Labor Day holiday weekend will be busy, with passenger volumes nearly 11% higher than last year—volumes that already exceeded 2019 Labor Day holiday travel volumes,” said TSA Administrator David Pekoske. “We are prepared for the increase in travel volumes and are working closely with our airline and airport partners to make sure we are maintaining our wait time standards of 30 minutes and under for standard screening lanes, and 10 minutes and under for TSA PreCheck lanes. There are occasions where wait times may be longer, so we encourage you to arrive early, pack your patience and reach out to us before arriving to the airport if you have any questions on our security procedures or items you may bring. I applaud our frontline employees who have done an excellent job throughout the busy travel season to facilitate secure travel for millions of passengers, all while we continue to deploy new checkpoint technology that enhances security effectiveness, efficiency and the passenger experience.”

Here are some valuable, family-friendly travel tips to know before you go:

  • Arrive early. The airport will be busy, especially this Friday, so arrive two hours prior to your scheduled flight to allow for adequate time to park your car or arrive via public transit or rideshare, check bags and go through security screening before arriving at the departure gate.
  • Unpack before you pack. Start packing with a bag that is already empty. Unzip every compartment. Prior to packing that empty bag, check TSA’s “What Can I Bring?” tool to know what is prohibited and permitted in your carry-on, and what must go in your checked bag. Know what is in each family member’s carry-on and personal item to ensure there are no prohibited items inside. If your children are packing their own bags, make sure they are not packing anything that is or may resemble a prohibited item. Water guns or any other replica weapons are not allowed to fly in your carry-on bag. Firearms are allowed in checked baggage when unloaded, declared with the airlines and stored properly. Firearms are not allowed at the security checkpoint, secure areas of the airport, or onboard aircraft.
  • Respect TSA and other frontline airport and airline employees.  Violence and unruly behavior in the nation’s transportation systems are not acceptable and will cause delays for passengers. Transportation Security Officers (TSOs), along with all frontline airport and airline employees and local law enforcement are all working together to ensure safe and secure travel. Assaulting a TSO is a federal offense and will result in penalties and/or arrest. Always follow the directions of flight attendants aboard aircraft. They are there for your safety and security.
  • Know TSA’s liquids rule and avoid a bag check. Know the 3-1-1 liquids rule . Pack liquids, gels and aerosols larger than 3.4 ounces in a checked bag to avoid having a carry-on bag pulled aside and opened by a TSO. The most common mistake travelers make when appearing at the checkpoint is having a large liquid container in their carry-on bag. If you are traveling with an infant, most items in your diaper bag are actually exempt from TSA’s liquids rule. Breast milk, powdered formula, baby food and snacks, bottles and sippy cups are all allowed to fly. This also goes for liquid and cream medications. Please separate these items from your bag and place them into a different bin for X-ray screening. If your item alarms, additional screening may be required.
  • Car seats, strollers and pet carriers. Be sure to contact your airline before your flight. You will want to make sure your car seat, stroller or pet carrier is able to fly with you. Please remove children from strollers and car seats before going through screening. Follow officer instruction regarding pets and never send them through the X-ray machine. Be sure to remove any loose items and place them in a bin or on the X-ray belt for screening. Collapse or fold large items and submit them to the X-ray machine. If your item is too large to be screened via X-ray, then it will have to undergo a visual and physical inspection by a TSO. We do not want to see you struggle, so if you need help, all you have to do is ask. An officer is always available to lend a helping hand.
  • Have acceptable ID out and ready. Ad ult passengers 18 years and older must show  valid identification  at the airport checkpoint in order to travel. To strengthen identity verification, TSA has been deploying Credential Authentication Technology (CAT) units to confirm the authenticity of a passenger’s identification credential, flight details and screening status – without having to scan a boarding pass. With CAT, passengers only need to provide their acceptable photo identification to the TSO.
  • Be aware of new checkpoint screening technology. TSA uses a variety of security methods and technologies to secure our transportation systems. Screening protocols can be unpredictable and may vary from airport to airport depending on available technology and the current threat environment. Some airports have installed new state-of-the-art Computed Tomography (CT) scanners which significantly improve threat detection capabilities for carry-on bags and reduce physical searches of bag contents for prohibited items. CT units give TSOs the ability to review  3D images of passengers’ bags and reduce physical searches of bag contents for prohibited items. Passengers screened in security lanes with CT units do not need to remove their 3-1-1 liquids or laptops, but they must place every carry-on item, including bags, into a bin for screening.
  • Just @AskTSA. If you have a question about the security screening process, just ask us! TSA is active on most social media platforms where travelers may send their questions. Tweet @AskTSA or send a Facebook message to AskTSA. Engage with our virtual assistant instantly or text directly with an AskTSA team member in real-time from 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. Eastern, 365 days a year at TRAVEL or 275-872. TSA’s social media accounts provide helpful security tips and guidance—often in a humorous way, so please follow us on Instagram, X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook. You may also contact TSA by calling (866) 289-9673 for automated information anytime or for a representative 8 a.m. – 11 p.m. ET weekdays and 9 a.m. – 8 p.m. ET weekends/holidays.
  • Request Special Assistance. Contact TSA Cares 72 hours prior to traveling if you or someone you’re traveling with requires special accommodations during the airport security screening process. TSA Cares is a helpline to assist travelers with disabilities and medical conditions. TSA Cares may be reached online at http://www.tsa.gov/contact-center/form/cares or by phone at (855) 787-2227 or federal relay 711. If you’re already at the airport, inform the TSO if a child or family member has a disability, medical condition or medical device, and advise the officer of the best way to relieve any concerns during the screening process. Parents may carry their child through screening to ease the screening process. The TSO will not remove a child from his/her mobility aid, wheelchair or scooter.
  • Travel with ease with TSA PreCheck and  ensure you have the TSA PreCheck mark on your boarding pass. Our trusted traveler program now has 90 participating airlines, is available at over 200 airports and has two authorized enrollment providers . Most applicants get a Known Traveler Number (KTN) within 3-5 days and 99% of members wait 10 minutes or less in a screening lane. TSA PreCheck passengers travel with ease and keep their shoes, belts and light jackets on and keep laptops, 3-1-1 liquids and food items in their bags. If you already have TSA PreCheck, your kids 12 and under may join you in the TSA PreCheck screening lane. Children 13-17 may join enrolled adults in the dedicated lanes when traveling on the same reservation and if the TSA PreCheck indicator appears on the child’s boarding pass . TSA PreCheck passengers must ensure that their KTN along with correct date of birth is in their airline reservation.

NOTE: Given airport and airline preparations in advance of Hurricane Idalia’s landfall, it is important that passengers monitor for weather impacts on their travel plans. Be storm ready, vi sit Ready.gov to make your plan today.

DALLAS (AP) — By some measures, air travelers have enjoyed a less stressful summer than last year, but canceled flights remain elevated as airlines face their last big test of the prime vacation season: Labor Day weekend.

The Federal Aviation Administration predicts that this will be the third busiest holiday weekend of the year so far, behind only the Juneteenth weekend, which included Father’s Day, and the Presidents Day break.

Hurricane Idalia weakened and headed out to sea Thursday. While the storm left damage and power outages , its impact on travel eased. Airlines canceled several dozen flights in Florida and Georgia on Thursday but expected to operate at full strength Friday. Travelers can check conditions where they are going on the FAA website .

Thursday figured to be the busiest day in U.S. airspace, with 52,203 flights scheduled, followed by 49,111 flights on Friday, according to the FAA. After a lull on Saturday and Sunday, flights are scheduled to pick back up Monday and Tuesday. The numbers include airline, military and some private flights.

Carol Giuliani, who is a member of the Dementia-Friendly Airports Working group and works as a travel companion for seniors with dementia, walks through Terminal 3 at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport after bringing a client from Minnesota Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2023, in Phoenix. “Ninety percent of the time it’s a family member that hires me,” said Giuliani, while seated at Phoenix Sky Harbor after escorting an elderly man on a flight. “The one I did today, (the wife) was like ‘thank you, thank you, thank you!’... I know how to pace it so that he gets safely and comfortably back home.” (AP Photo/Ross D. Franklin)

The Transportation Security Administration expects to screen more than 14 million passengers from Friday through Wednesday, up nearly 11% over the same weekend last year.

TSA Administrator David Pekoske warned that at times it could take more than 30 minutes to get through security and more than 10 minutes in PreCheck lanes, “so we encourage you to arrive early, pack your patience.” The agency recommended that travelers get to the airport two hours before their flight.

AAA said bookings for domestic travel — flights, hotels, rental cars, and cruises — are running 4% higher than Labor Day last year. The auto club and insurance seller said international bookings are up a staggering 44% now that COVID-19 restrictions have been lifted, with the top destinations being Vancouver, Rome, London, Dublin, and Paris.

Gasoline prices are similar to last year. The nationwide average was $3.83 a gallon on Wednesday, a penny less than a year ago, AAA reported .

On many planes this weekend, every seat is expected to be filled, capping a busy summer.

American Airlines expects to carry nearly 3.5 million passengers on about 32,000 flights between Thursday and next Tuesday. United Airlines is predicting its biggest Labor Day weekend ever, with nearly 2.8 million passengers in that same six-day stretch.

TSA figures show that the number of travelers going through U.S. airport checkpoints in August is 2% higher than in August 2019, before the pandemic.

The good news for travelers is that the rate of canceled flights is down about 19% from last summer, according to data from tracking service FlightAware. Still, the 1.8% cancellation rate since June 1 is a tick higher than during the same period in 2019, and flights delays are even more common than last summer.

Weather has accounted for about three-fourths of all airline delays this year, according to the FAA, but at other times the volume of flights has been too much for FAA air traffic control centers, many of which are understaffed.

Travelers have enjoyed a bit of a break from last year’s skyrocketing airfares. The average fare for a domestic flight in July was down 9% from June and 19% from last July, according to the government’s consumer price index . However, the index sample is skewed toward discount airlines — the biggest airlines have reported that their prices are closer to 2022 levels.

This Labor Day weekend is shaping up to be a crowded one, from airports to interstates.

The Federal Aviation Administration predicts this will be the third-busiest holiday weekend of the year so far, behind the weekends of Juneteenth (which overlapped with Father's Day) and Presidents Day in February.

It's forecasting a peak of 52,000 flights on Thursday, compared to its daily average of 45,000.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) expects to screen more than 14 million passengers , which it says is almost 11% higher than last year at this time. It projects there will be more than 2.7 million passengers on Friday, its busiest day.

And AAA expects to see more traffic on the roads than it has in years, especially on Friday and Monday afternoons. It says Labor Day weekend bookings of flights, hotels, rental cars and cruises are up 4% domestically and 44% internationally over last Labor Day.

And it's not just the sheer number of travelers that could create a hassle.

Parts of the South are still recovering from Hurricane Idalia, which temporarily closed several Florida airports and disrupted thousands of flights earlier this week. Plus, American Airlines flight attendants voted to authorize a strike on Wednesday, while United Airlines flight attendants and Southwest Airlines pilots picketed outside airports across the country on Thursday.

David Koenig, airlines reporter for the Associated Press, is cautiously optimistic. He says the flight attendants aren't likely to actually call a strike anytime soon — in part because federal law makes it so hard for airline unions to do so — and air travel seems to have recovered from the impacts of Idalia.

But that doesn't mean there won't be cancellations, delays or other general inconveniences, he tells Morning Edition .

"The cautionary note is that airlines have struggled at times in the last couple of years, even during good weather, when air travel has come back the way it has," he says. "And we're also dealing with a shortage of air traffic controllers."

Here's what to know — and how to minimize stress — if you're heading out of town for the weekend.

TSA Administrator David Pekoske says the agency is prepared for the increase in travel volumes this weekend.

He said in a statement that it's working with airlines and airports to ensure wait times are no more than 30 minutes in standard screening lanes and 10 minutes in TSA PreCheck lanes — but made no promises.

Traveling for the holidays? 7 tips to help you keep your cool

Traveling for the holidays? 7 tips to help you keep your cool

"There are occasions where wait times may be longer, so we encourage you to arrive early, pack your patience and reach out to us before arriving to the airport if you have any questions on our security procedures or items you may bring," he added.

TSA advises arriving two hours ahead of your scheduled flight, leaving extra time to navigate busy airports.

Use these tips to keep your time at the airport as easy as possible

To make your travel day even easier, Pekoske recommends packing properly ( here's what you can and can't bring in your carry-on) and keeping an acceptable ID out and ready when it's time to go through security.

People should also call TSA Cares 72 hours in advance to request any special accommodations, and contact their airline ahead of time to make sure any car seats, strollers and pet carriers are allowed on the plane.

You can check airport status and delays on the FAA website and monitor flight updates through your airline's website or app.

If you're gearing up to hit the road this holiday weekend, you're not alone.

AAA anticipates the busiest travel time will be Friday afternoon when travelers will share the highway with daily commuters. The same goes for late Monday afternoon.

If you have any flexibility, it says, consider planning your drive for off-peak hours.

Three songs for the perfect summer road trip playlist

The transportation analytics company INRIX says the best times for your road trip are before 11 a.m. on Friday, after 6 p.m. on Saturday and after 7 p.m. on Monday. It expects minimal traffic impact on Sunday.

"The best times to travel by car over Labor Day weekend are early in the morning or in the evening," says analyst Bob Pishue. "If you must travel during heavy traffic, navigation apps and local departments of transportation can help steer drivers around long delays."

AAA recommends taking some time to prepare your car before getting on the road.

"It's important that drivers remember that their vehicle can break down just as easily over Labor Day weekend as it can at any time of year and that they take every precaution to ensure that their cars are road ready," says Amy Parmenter, spokesperson for AAA in Greater Hartford.

They advise checking tire pressure and tread, making sure your battery is in good condition, checking your air conditioning, windshield wipers, fluids and headlight functionality and fully charging your cell phone before driving.

AAA also recommends stocking your car with a summer emergency kit, including jumper cables, tools, first aid supplies, a flashlight, road flare or reflective triangle, extra medications, water and snacks.

Every year, millions of people embark on journeys, whether for business or leisure. After a few years of much less crowded airports due to the pandemic, the International Air Transport Association is reporting that passenger numbers are just about what they were prepandemic levels.

However, there have already been a number of days that have surpassed prepandemic levels and they’ve largely fallen right before or after holidays.

Take Independence Day, for example. In 2023, AAA projected that 4.17 million people flew over the July Fourth holiday period, surpassing the previous air travel record of 3.91 million travelers, set in 2019. Similarly, TSA screened a record number of passengers on the Sunday following Thanksgiving in 2022, with more than 2.56 million passengers.

According to the TSA, the busiest travel days of the year are usually the Tuesday and Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the Sunday after Thanksgiving . TSA recorded its highest passenger screening volume in its history on the Sunday after Thanksgiving in 2019, when nearly 2.9 million passengers passed through TSA checkpoints. But Thanksgiving and Christmas aren’t the only times we can expect busy airports. Here are the busiest travel day of the year.

Busiest travel days of the year

Thanksgiving and Christmas tend to be the busiest travel days of the year, but other holidays like Memorial Day, July Fourth, and Labor Day also see some of the highest volumes of air passengers.

So far this year, daily passenger numbers have been growing each month. In all of 2022, only one day had more than 2.5 million air passengers in the United States: November 27 (the Sunday after Thanksgiving), with 2.560 million. As of August 20, 2023, there had already been more than 75 days in the calendar year that had surpassed 2.5 million air passengers, according to TSA checkpoint data .

These have been the five busiest travel days in the last full year:

  • July 30: 2.793 million passengers
  • July 28: 2.785 million passengers
  • July 23: 2.789 million passengers
  • June 30: 2.884 million passengers (the new record for the busiest air travel day ever in the United States)
  • June 16: 2.785 million passengers

For reference, the busiest travel day in all of 2019 was November 27, with 2.882 million passengers.

The busiest travel days around Christmas and New Year’s, historically

As for Christmas and New Year’s Eve, the number of travelers is likely to ramp up during the end of December and into early January as well. In 2019, the highest number of travelers during the Christmas and New Year period was on Friday, December 17 (one week before Christmas), when 2.6 million travelers passed through TSA checkpoints. The second busiest day was Christmas Eve, with 2.58 million travelers, followed by the day after Christmas with 2.57 million travelers.

Tips for flying during the busiest times of the year

There are a few ways to make travel easier and clear busy TSA checkpoints more quickly, this holiday season.

Get TSA PreCheck, Clear, and/or Global Entry

Never have these security expediting services been more valuable than during the current congestion happening at U.S. airports. TSA PreCheck recently reduced its prices from $85 to $78 for a five-year membership, and it’s only $70 to renew . Clear costs $189 per year. International travelers should consider the $100 Global Entry, which includes TSA PreCheck, for expedited customs screening upon arrival in the United States—and there’s a secret way to speed up the application process .

Check to see if your airport has a fast-pass security lane you can book in advance—for free

No TSA PreCheck or Clear? Select U.S. airports are giving travelers the option to make an advance “fast pass” reservation to head to the front of the security line—free of charge. We’ve compiled the full list of airports that offer this service .

Consider traveling with carry-on only

For those who don’t want to risk their luggage getting lost during a busy travel time when airports remain understaffed, traveling with carry-on may be your best bet. Another alternative? Luggage-shipping services .

Know what you can bring through security

If you’re traveling with carry-on, know what you can and cannot pack in said carry-on. By now, you know you can only carry on liquids in containers 3.4 ounces or smaller, so be sure that holiday items such as gravy, cranberry sauce, or wine are either left behind or packed in a checked bag as they are considered liquids and could otherwise be confiscated (and create delays). Check AFAR’s in-depth guide to what foods you can bring through TSA to make sure that what you’ve packed in your carry-on can pass through security.

Thoroughly check your bags before leaving the house

TSA recommends that travelers fully empty their bags prior to packing to make sure that they don’t accidentally bring something to the airport that they didn’t intend to bring, which could cause further delays.

Monitor the weather

Check the weather and forecasts that are available on sites such as the National Weather Service , the Weather Channel , and AccuWeather so that you can be prepared for possible disruptions and establish back-up plans for delayed travel.

Get to the airport earlier than you’d think

The lines and wait times at the country’s airports (and abroad, too) are longer than they’ve been in years. Best to arrive early and have some extra time postsecurity than risk missing your flight waiting in an hours-long check-in or security line. Aim for at least two hours before domestic flights and at least three for international flights.

Know if and when you are due a refund because of a delayed or canceled flight

On September 1, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) launched a new Aviation Consumer Protection website to help travelers track down what kind of refunds or compensation their airline should provide when there is a cancellation or delay.

Airlines aren’t required to compensate passengers when flights are delayed or canceled due to problems deemed beyond the company’s control, like bad weather. They also aren’t required to provide a refund when the passenger initiates the cancellation or flight change. But a refund is required by U.S. law when the airline cancels, delays, or alters a flight, or passengers are involuntarily bumped from a flight that is oversold or due to issues originating from the airline, such as operational or staffing problems.

Additionally, after the federal government began cracking down on airlines this year, all of the major U.S. airlines vowed to provide meal vouchers for delays of more than three hours and to provide transfers and hotel stays to passengers affected by an overnight cancellation. They have all also agreed to rebook travelers on an alternate flight at no added cost due to a delay or cancellation and most will also rebook on a partner airline.

Dear Fellow Travellers

We're thinking of visiting Suzdal on a one-day trip from Moscow this mid-August. We did our homework, and found the best way is to go to Vladimir by train and take a bus to Suzdal. We also checked the fare/timetable with Russian National Railway's official website ( http://pass.rzd.ru ) , then started wondering whether it is worth to book trains in advance. Yes, it's a busy season and we feel safe, but none in our group speaks Russian, and if something happens, we cannot catch the train we booked, all the money will be wasted. So, would we be better off not to book any train and go with the 'suburban' train that does not take booking (incidentally RZD site does not tell us how much it costs - maybe because it is a different operator and we cannot buy the ticket on their site?) Or would you recommend booking trains in advance?

Also, we've been trying to find a bus timetable between Vladimir and Suzdal, but so far we couldn't.

Could anybody help?

Thanks in advance, Ken.

There are not many suburban trains to Vladimir, and they are usually packed, as any suburban trains to other regions. You trip is going to be very uncomfortable (I know, I've tried if once 'cause experss tickets were sold out). Suggestion: for trip to Vladimir, book a # 7082 train: https://rasp.yandex.ru/thread/7082_0_2000001_g19_4 (or a # 728 train if tickets are not too expensive). For return trip, maybe train # 709.

> RZD site does not tell us how much it costs - maybe because it is a different operator

:))) There is no 'other operator'. RR site just does not sell commuter train tickets.

> bus timetable between Vladimir and Suzdal

https://rasp.yandex.ru/all-transport/vladimir--suzdal . In short , every 30 minutes.

And the last: if possible, allocate 2 days to Suzdal and Vladimir.

' class=

The train you can book on rzd.ru, fast train to Nozhniy Novgorod via Vladimir is nice, comfortable and surely needs to be booked in advance. You can leave early in the morning, and reach Vladimir in under 2 hrs; as opposed to 3+ hrs by a suburban train. It costs like R350-400, (do not remember easily), but fast train is wirth effort.

As for getting the train - station has signs in English, board is in English and even these trains are annonced in English. You can visit the station the day before for orientation... Many people have done that before.

As for going to Suzdal from Vladimir, tgere are plenty of buses, right from train station sq. in Vladimir, but taxi would be faster and easier, esp.for several people, just use Yandex/Gett app.

Thanks a lot, Dmitri and Vasily! You guys are really great - we will definitely book fast trains. One thing which is not urgent - is it cheaper to buy return tickets from Moscow to Vladimir, or the two single/one-way tickets are the same price? In Britain, they are completely different: returns are often cheaper but sometimes two singles are cheaper - very confusing. We hope Russian system is more straightforward. Thanks again, Ken.

You can buy a return ticket only for suburban trains, and it will cost as 2 one-way tickets anyway. For everything else, you just buy 2 singles one by one - simple as it can be :).

Thanks a lot, Dmitri. Glad to know Russian rail system is not so complicated. Cheers, Ken.

And some more thoughts on the matter :).

1. If you don't feel confident, arrive at the station somewhat earlier, like 30 minutes in advance (not 10 like I did). I know half an hour is a bit overkill... just for the peace of mind :).

2. Vladimir trains depart from the Gorky direction dead end platforms (highlited here: http://yandex.ru/maps/213/moscow/?ll=37.662677%2C55.755958&mode=poi&poi%5Bpoint%5D=37.661626%2C55.756222&poi%5Buri%5D=ymapsbm1%3A%2F%2Forg%3Foid%3D188728336151&z=18 ). Do not enter main building, you don't need it.

3. I tend to agree with Vasili's advice about taxi. Suzdal bus staiton is on the outskirts of the town, you'll have either walk to the center (as I did - but I had 2 days instead of one) or wait for the local bus. Taxi will take you straight to the town centre.

I specify that high-speed trains to Vladimir leave from the first high platform. It is in the opposite part of the Kursk railway station than dead-end platforms. Common local trains to Vladimir depart from dead-end platforms.

Thanks everyone. I'm sure we'll have a super time in Suzdal. Cheers, Ken

These Are the Busiest Days to Travel for Christmas and New Year's, According to the TSA

Be prepared for airport congestion if you're flying on these days.

busiest travel days labor day weekend

The Transportation Security Administration expects busy airport checkpoints this winter holiday season and is warning travelers to come prepared.

During its busiest days this season, the agency expects to screen more than 2.5 million passengers each day, a 6 percent increase compared to last year. The TSA said the most crowded days at airports across the country are forecast to be Thursday, Dec. 21, Friday, Dec. 29, and Monday, Jan. 1.

Last year, the busiest day was Dec. 29.

“We are prepared to handle the busy passenger volumes this winter holiday season,” TSA Administrator David Pekoske said in a statement . “TSA’s continued success during this record year for travel is a direct result of teamwork, planning and professional execution across the agency, from our frontline employees to those behind the scenes; partnerships with airports and air carriers; and innovative checkpoint technologies that improve security effectiveness, efficiency and the passenger experience.”

The start of Christmas and New Year’s travel — which airlines expect to be record-breaking — follows an equally busy Thanksgiving during which the TSA recorded the busiest day in its history . In total, a record 7.5 million travelers are forecast to fly over the end-of-year holidays, according to AAA .

To cope with the crowds, the TSA recommends travelers come prepared by knowing what they can and cannot bring through security. Certain holiday staples like pies are fine to bring in a carry-on bag, while others, like large bottles of eggnog, must be placed in a checked bag. Travelers should also think twice before wrapping gifts since TSA officers may have to unwrap them to inspect them.

Travelers who are unsure can check the “ What Can I Bring? ” page on the TSA’s website or ask the agency by texting a question to 275-872 or messaging the agency with the @AskTSA handle on X, formerly known as Twitter, or through Facebook Messenger.

The agency also wants travelers to be aware of new technology it is rolling out, like the Credential Authentication Technology (CAT), which allows travelers to get through security without having to show a boarding pass or, in some cases, even a physical ID ; and the full-size Computed Tomography (CT) x-ray system , which can create 3D images of carry-on items, allowing officers to detect things like weapons, explosives, and other banned items.
