1 week africa itinerary – 1 diverse country.

Best Place to Stay Morocco: Les Matins Bleus, Essaouira

With just one week up your sleeve for Africa, it’s best to concentrate on 1 country that offers a lot.

Close to Europe, with short flights times, I really think Morocco makes the perfect choice for your 1 week Africa itinerary.

From the great cities of Marrakesh and Fez full of their photographic streets and pumping souks, to day trips in the Atlas Mountains , people-watching in the medina of Chefchaouen or exploring the coastline at Essaouira, you can do a lot with just 7 days here!

Morocco also gives travellers a good insight into the diversity of Africa – with Arabic, Bedouin, French and English spoken here and its people bringing a wide range of cultural backgrounds to the fore – this country provides a good introduction to the complex and layered diversity of this fascinating continent.

Plus you can’t go wrong with the food, or the mint tea of course!

2 Week Africa Itinerary – Safari and Sea

Both Kenya and Tanzania are perfect countries to explore with a 2 week Africa itinerary – although if you’re on a budget I’d suggest just picking one country and sticking with it to avoid double visa fees and pricey flight connections.

Best Place to Stay in Tanzania: New Teddy’s Place, Zanzibar

Starting with Tanzania, 2 weeks in this country is ideal for experiencing some of Africa’s most scenic and spectacular safaris.

My favourites, and pick of the bunch, were the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti, which I’d suggest allowing at least 3 days for if you really want to soak in their enormity.

Learn more in my post about why Tanzania’s Serengeti will blow your mind!

Picking up a tour last minute to these great game reserves can be done cheaply from the town of Arusha and you may want to hang a few days in this place to experience a bit of everyday Tanzanian life at the same time you try and score a bargain.

After you’ve had your wildlife fix, head to the coast and the country’s biggest city, Dar Es Salaam for a night, before hopping on the ferry to Zanzibar.

I’d allow at least 5 days for this stunning island – 2 nights in the capital Stone Town and 3 nights at the beach town of Paje on the east coast to dive, kitesurf or just relax!

And you can discover more about how to spend your time in this country care of my ideal Tanzania itinerary!

Best Place to Stay in Kenya: Distant Relative Eco-Lodge, Kilifi

When it comes to a 2 week Africa itinerary, Kenya is really hard to beat.

Like its neighbour Tanzania, Kenya has some incredible safari opportunities and some drop-dead gorgeous coastline too.

If you’re on a budget, consider limiting yourself to just one safari in Kenya (none of them come super cheap!) and with this in mind, it really is hard to overlook the mind-blowing magnificence of the Masai Mara.

Winner of the Best Africa Safari award (as voted by me!), the Mara is a paradise for its big 5 spots, stunning landscape shots and rich cultural heritage.

This place really does have it all and Milimani Backpackers in Nairobi provide some great value tours there for backpackers and solo budget nomads.

If you do feel like treating yourself to more than 1 safari, other great options in Kenya include:

  • Amboseli National Park
  • Lake Nakuru National Park
  • Tsavo East National Park
  • Hells Gate National Park

Otherwise, check out my list of the 14 most spellbinding things to do in Kenya for more ideas, or have a look at these fab Kenya tours .

Once you’ve got your wildlife fix in Kenya, it’s time to head to the coast!

Kilifi and Diani Beach and my 2 favourite spots.

The first offers creekside relaxation in the amazing Distant Relatives Backpackers, with day trips to Watamu and Malindi all possible from this local town.

Diani is all about the white sand, turquoise sea and dreamy views.

Diani Backpackers offers a great budget place to stay here among the expensive resorts and you can still access the beach, boat trips and some great diving opps along with everyone else!

Sometimes, with a 2 week Africa itinerary, people like to combine Tanzania and Kenya by visiting the Masai Mara for their safari fix and then heading to Zanzibar for their beach time.

Cheap and short flights between Nairobi / Mombasa and Zanzibar make this more than possible.

Discover more in my ideal Kenya itinerary for a tight schedule!

South Africa, Kruger NP, Zebra

3 Week Africa Itinerary – Southern Explorer

With 3 weeks up your sleeve for Africa, you can really start exploring more than one country.

I’d advise combining South Africa, Botswana & Vic Falls in Zimbabwe as a great option for this timeframe.

SOUTH AFRICA

Best Place to Stay in South Africa: The B.I.G, Cape Town

Begin in Cape Town, one of the continent’s most alluring cities, and after 3 days of exploring its dizzy heights with this perfect itinerary , begin making your way along the South African coast.

Allow plenty of time for the Wild Coast, as well as the wine country and the Drakensberg Mountains if you can – with 10 days you should be able to see most of the best things to do in South Africa.

Reach Joburg and hop up to Kruger National Park for an amazing full day game drive in one of this continent’s most famous game reserves before heading onto Botswana – maybe via a short flight if you’re pushed for time.

Check out this top-rated private day-long game drive in Kruger (which includes a pick-up) if you’re looking for a great option.

Otherwise, if you’re hoping to travel South Africa on a budget, then these top hacks for a cheap safari there may help you.

Botswana, Chobe National Park, Local Man

In Botswana, the Okavango Delta and Chobe River National Park offer more sublime safari experiences.

Choose between them or hit up both (allow at least 4 days for both) if you have time.

VICTORIA FALLS

Best Place to Stay in Victoria Falls: Shoestrings Backpackers, Zimbabwe

From Chobe River, it’s then a “short” drive (in Africa terms) across the border into Zimbabwe where you can see the stunning Victoria Falls.

With all manner of crazy activities on offer here, adrenaline junkies should allow at least 2 nights to get their fix!

Learn more in my list of the 8 things to do in Victoria Falls , which are g uaranteed to get your heart racing

1 Month Africa Itinerary – Northern Highlights

From one end of the continent to another, with 1 month for your African adventure, you can definitely explore the best that the northern end of this continent has to offer.

Best Place to Stay in Egypt: Ekadolli Nubian Guesthouse, Aswan

Egypt really is every bit as spectacular as you imagine and with so much to see and do here, I’d suggest allowing 10 days-2 weeks to explore the length and breadth of this fab country.

Begin in Cairo and give yourself 3 nights here to tick the Pyramids and the Sphinx off your bucket list, as well as see the Islamic and Coptic quarters of the city and one of the world’s best museums.

Learn more in my list of the 10 best things to do in Cairo

From Cairo, head to the Red Sea to get your beach fix.

The mega-chilled town of Dahab gets my vote for its awesome cafes, cheap prices and super diving opps.

Allow yourself 3-4 nights, although if you’re anything like me, you’ll be hardpressed to leave!

After the Red Sea, it’s time to crack on with the sightseeing.

First up, Luxor for the Valley of Kings, Karnak and Luxor Temple.

The Luxor Museum and other sites of the West Bank are also highly worthwhile.

Allow 2-3 nights in Luxor (here’s a handy itinerary to help you) and consider taking a well-priced tour to get the best from your experience.

I highly recommend Emad, a very experienced tour guide with fantastic English and a cracking sense of humour! He can be contacted via Whatsapp on +20 100 151 3578.

From Luxor bag yourself a cheap cruise and sail down the Nile to Aswan, passing Efnu Temple and Kom Ombu Temple on the way.

Once in Aswan, Philae Temple and Abu Simbel cannot be missed!

Best Place to Stay in Sudan: The Nubian Rest House, Karima

Sudan might seem an unlikely choice on an Africa itinerary, but trust me you’ll be blown away when you get there just like everyone else.

Full of amazing historical sights, fascinating culture and some of the friendliest people on earth, a week here will give you an experience few travellers are lucky enough to get… yet.

Get to Sudan either by crossing overland from Aswan or flying direct to Khartoum from Cairo.

Allow 3 days for the capital and then split the rest of your time between the Nubian town of Karima and the splendid Meroe Pyramids.

Get more information in my perfect Sudan travel itinerary.

Best Place to Stay in Ethiopia: Mr Martin’s Cozy Place, Addis Ababa

After Sudan, you can either fly or cross overland into Ethiopia, my favourite country of ALL time!

Yes don’t get me started on how amazing this place is!

With 1-2 weeks you’ll have a good amount of time to see all the major attractions including the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela , the mind-blowing landscape of the Danakil Depression , the Camelot of Africa – Gondar – and hike in the UNESCO-listed Simien Mountains .

As well as sample the amazing food, coffee, music and dancing of this utterly unique place!

2 Months Africa Itinerary – The Best of South & East

2 months in Africa will give you a great opportunity to see the best of the Southern and Eastern parts of this continent and tick quite a few experiences off your bucket list while you’re at it!

Fly into Cape Town and enjoy a week exploring the attractions of this dazzling city as well as its many day trips.

There’s tons of details and tips available in my list of the best things to do in Cape Town.

Namibia, Dune 45, Sunrise

From Cape Town head north into Namibia and spend a week checking out the Etosha National Park , Sossusvlei, Fish River Canyon and Skeleton Coast.

Namibia is a large and sparsely populated country, which means distances between destinations can be significant, but it’s worth the journey because this country is like nowhere else on earth!

Discover more with my list of the 9 best places to visit in Namibia.

Botswana, Okavango Delta, Sunset Mokoro Ride

After Namibia, hop across the border into Botswana to check out Okavango and Chobe River National Parks, allowing yourself 5 days to take in their natural splendour.

It’s then just a “short” drive from northern Botswana across the Zimbabwe border and onto Victoria Falls, one of the 7 natural wonders of the world, this is absolutely one of the best things to see in Zimbabwe .

From rafting to canyoning, zip-lining to bungee jumping, this is the adventure capital of Southern Africa so it’s time to get your adrenaline fix at this iconic spot!

Absolute Africa, Zambia, Leopard

Cross the border at Victoria Falls and head onto Zambia’s most national park – South Luangwa –  for some seriously close encounters with hippos, elephants and more!

Give yourself 2 nights here, unless the animals freak you out so bad on the first night you can’t stay longer!

Best Place to Stay in Malawi: Thumbi View Lodge, Cape Maclear

Now it’s time to chill a bit, and there’s few better places to do it in this part of the world than Lake Malawi.

Pick one spot along its banks, pitch your tent and unwind!

Zanzibar, Stone Town, Jaws Corner Flags

I’d really suggest 7-10 days in Tanzania to take in as much as you can of this amazing country.

From world-class safaris in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater to the stunning beaches and fascinating Swahili culture of Zanzibar, this is a country of contrasts that shouldn’t be overlooked.

I suggest a 3-day safari tour as a good option, followed by plenty of downtime both in Zanzibar’s capital Stone Town and its east coast resort of Paje.

Best Place to Stay in Rwanda: Discover Rwanda Youth Hostel, Kigali

And finally, dive into the heartland of East Africa with a trip through Rwanda and then into Uganda.

Compared to the mostly dry and arid Tanzania, the lush, green countryside of these 2 countries can be a welcome surprise, although often the humidity is not!

Best stop in Rwanda is the capital Kigali where the important Genocide Memorial Centre is, but here’s 6 other epic things to do in this country too.

Best Place to Stay in Uganda: Fat Cat Backpackers, Kampala

In Uganda it’s all about the wildlife, so don’t miss out on any of the amazing national parks here including Murchison Falls National Park and Queen Elizabeth National Park.

The town of Jinja , the East Africa adventure capital and start of the Blue Nile falls is another must, as is gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest of course.

With all this on your plate, you’ll need at least a week to explore the best of this beautiful country.

Get more ideas in my list of the 10 best things to do in Uganda .

3 Months+ – Cape Town to Cairo

South Africa, Cape Town, Jackets

And with a 3 month+ Africa Itinerary open to you, you’ll have to time to do the most legendary of all legendary journeys – Cape Town to Cairo!

If you’re a fast mover then, I’d suggest following the 2 month itinerary above and then tagging on Kenya, Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt onto the end (view my 1 month Africa itinerary above for best details on this northern section).

Otherwise, if you’re a slower mover like me, then a South Africa – Swaziland – Mozambique – Tanzania – Kenya – Ethiopia – Somaliland – Sudan – Egypt route takes in less countries, giving you more time in each!

This whole route can be done overland, although you’ll have to make provisions and plans for border crossings in advance.

I’d start in Cape Town and then work up the coast to Eswatini before continuing north, but depending on the time of year, you could just as well make this journey in reverse.

Check out the other itineraries in this post for more detailed information about each country in this epic voyage.

Hello Stephie, While in Uganda you can tour various parks in 2 to 3 weeks. You can allocate Murchison 3 Days,Transfer to Kibale for Chimpanzee tracking 2 days,go via Fort Portal and connect to Queen Elizabeth National Park where you can spend another 3 days, head to Bwindi National Park via Ishasha for Gorilla Tracking also 3 days, then proceed to Lake Bunyonyi in Southern Uganda for may be 2 days. Then you can return to the capital or proceed to Kigali which is 2 h-3 hours away and take a flight from there.Thank you for loving Africa.

dream trips south africa

Thanks Immaculate, this sounds like a jam-packed, action-packed itinerary that takes in the best of Uganda. I do worry it might be a bit rushed though. Probably leaving out Fort Portal would make it more manageable, plus relaxing at the lake at the end is a great idea. If you had to choose between Chimpanzee or Gorilla trekking, which would you go for?

I would choose Gorilla tracking anytime any day.The experience of tracking in the highlands of Bwindi in groups of 8 is worth the while. You need to be fit though.

Great, feeling pleased I’ve trekked with the gorillas, but not the chimps yet! Loved the challenge of the Bwindi terrain too šŸ™‚

You are more than welcome to track the chimpanzees as well in Kibale National Park or Budongo Forest in Murchison Falls National Park. It’s a good experience too.

Wonderful, it’s definitely on list for when I return to Uganda

Thank You for sharing this kind of article. But I don’t think we could travel in 2021? What do you think of travelling in 2021? and I would like do a safari

Dreaming of South Africa: How Iā€™m planning to return using points, miles and cash

Katie Genter

Update: Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .

As a digital nomad without a home base, I'm itching to get back on the road when the time is right.

Related reading: Here's what to consider if you're thinking about booking future travel now

Although I have a lot of upcoming trips planned, I keep coming back to one destination: South Africa .

My husband and I were in South Africa this March when the country declared a State of National Disaster because of the coronavirus pandemic. Four days later the U.S. Department of State issued a worldwide Level 4 "do not travel" warning and advised U.S. citizens to return immediately to our home country unless we were "prepared to remain abroad for an indefinite period." We heeded the advice and canceled the rest of what would have been a three-week trip to four destinations across three African countries.

My South African dream trip isn't about recreating what we missed in March, however. Half of the Marriott properties we'd booked for that trip have now jumped in category level . And, we decided we'd rather focus on multiple destinations when we return in order to maximize a parks and reserves annual pass we purchased in March. So, here's what I'm planning for my next trip to South Africa.

For TPG news delivered each morning to your inbox, sign up for our daily newsletter .

My husband JT came across an inexpensive LATAM one-way business class fare from Mexico City to Cape Town via SĆ£o Paulo and Johannesburg a few weeks ago. We booked this one-way in October for MX$14,660 total, which is about $618 total for both of us.

We'd been discussing a trip to Mexico City and wanted to return to South Africa before next March to take advantage of the Wild Card parks and reserves annual pass we purchased during our trip this March. So this one-way business class fare seemed too good to pass up.

If Mexico, Brazil and South Africa are accepting visitors from the U.S. this fall and it's advisable to travel, we'll be flying. If not, we'll rely on whatever travel waivers are offered by LATAM to reschedule our flights. Worst case, we'll just have to walk away from the $309-per-person business-class fare -- a risk we're willing to take.

Related reading: The six best ways to get to South Africa on points and miles

Since the LATAM fare departs from Mexico City, we'll need positioning flights. We expect to be in Birmingham, Alabama, for a wedding in early October so I snagged American Airlines award flights from Birmingham to Mexico City. As American Airlines Executive Platinum elites , we can cancel award flights and redeposit the miles without a charge, so there's no risk in booking these Web Special awards for 10,000 miles and $31.77 in taxes and fees each.

dream trips south africa

I was even able to build in an extended layover in Dallas so I can work most of the day while enjoying the Flagship Lounge . After all, Mexico City is a qualifying international destination for lounge access for an Executive Platinum elite (although I could also get access with Oneworld Sapphire status through Malaysia Airlines ).

Once in South Africa, we'll either pay cash or redeem Ultimate Rewards points at a rate of 1.5 cents each for flights through the Ultimate Rewards portal for domestic flights. There are many domestic carriers in South Africa and most fares are relatively inexpensive even at the last minute. It usually doesn't make sense to redeem airline points for award tickets when flying within South Africa. It's also usually possible to snag inexpensive one-way car rentals through Autoslash when needed.

Related reading: Top nine ways to fly business class to Africa using points and miles

As for our return from South Africa, we used American Airlines AAdvantage miles to book Qatar business class from Johannesburg to Atlanta via Doha. And, we're scheduled to fly QSuites from Doha to Atlanta .

dream trips south africa

At 75,000 AAdvantage miles and $15.70 per person for a business-class redemption from Africa to the U.S., this is a great use of American Airlines miles . And, as Executive Platinum elites, we can always cancel and refund the miles if our plans change.

Hotels and destinations

We plan to spend four nights in Mexico City and 19 nights in South Africa and Eswatini (which is completely landlocked by South Africa). We're prioritizing destinations from which we can visit reserves and parks that are accessible with our Wild Card . And, since I'll be working U.S. East Coast hours most weekdays for TPG, we'll need to travel slower and prioritize properties with adequate internet and workspace.

Related reading: A guide to planning your African vacation

Here's our hotel plan.

Four nights in Mexico City

I'd had my eye on a 10,000-point-per-night IHG property in Mexico City's Zona Rosa district ever since I researched my "stretch your points" piece on IHG . A few other loyalty programs have attractive low-category Mexico City properties such as Hyatt's Category 1 Hyatt House Mexico City/Santa Fe and Marriott's Category 2 Courtyard Mexico City Revolucion -- but this IHG property wins when it comes to location. Plus, as an IHG Rewards Premier Credit Card cardholder I can get four award nights for just 30,000 points total at this 10,000-point per night property.

dream trips south africa

There are lots of fun activities in Mexico City including visiting nearby Teotihuacan , checking out the Zocolo and seeing mariachi bands in Plaza Garibaldi . I hope to take a day off to do some sightseeing in addition to what I can explore in the evenings.

Related reading: 10 things every tourist must eat (and drink) in Mexico City

Five nights in Cape Town

Since we fly into Cape Town and have enjoyed visiting the city on previous trips, we plan to spend five nights there. We're opting for five because we may use points to stay at one of the city's many low-category Marriott properties, where we'd get a fifth night free on award stays.

There are two Category 1 Marriott properties and three Category 2 properties in the Cape Town area.

The three Marriott Category 2 properties in the Cape Town area are all appealing for different reasons. The Protea Hotel Cape Town Cape Castle is appealing for its Green Point location near the V&A Waterfront; the Protea Hotel Stellenbosch would be convenient for a wine-country visit, and the Protea Hotel Cape Town Mowbray is very well-rated and located in the Observatory neighborhood.

dream trips south africa

There are also some appealing higher-category Marriott properties. And the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Cape Town - Upper Eastside is currently bookable for 15,000 points per night or $63 per night during our dates. Alternatively, the Holiday Inn Express Cape Town City Centre is currently bookable for 20,000 points per night.

On this trip, I'm hoping to explore less-visited parts of Table Mountain National Park. I may also spend a morning in the Stellenbosch wine country and perhaps take a drive down to see some of the Cape Peninsula sites. (Robben Island, site of the infamous prison where Nelson Mandela was held for 18 years, is a must-visit if it's your first time in Cape Town.)

Five nights in Kimberly

Kimberly looks like an interesting town with a strong history of diamond mining. There's a Category 1 Marriott, the Protea Hotel Kimberley, located next to what some claim is claim is the world's deepest hole excavated by hand. But my main reason to visit Kimberly is South Africa's newest national park, Mokala National Park, little more than an hour's drive from Kimberly.

dream trips south africa

Mokala National Park has a couple of treetop cottages that can be booked through the national park for between 1,750 and 1,950 South African rand (between $93 and $104) per night with a two-night minimum. The treetop cottages don't have power, are relatively primitive and can be difficult to book -- but they look amazing and some overlook waterholes frequented by animals. If I'm able to snag one of these cottages for two nights, I'll have to take some time off to disconnect and enjoy the experience.

Three nights in Mbabane, Eswatini

It's difficult to look at a map of South Africa and not notice two landlocked countries within it: Eswatini and Lesotho. As I looked at all the parks for which I could use the Wild Card parks and reserves annual pass we'd purchased for use in Kruger National Park, I noticed there were three parks in Eswatini where the pass would provide entry. So, having the annual parks and reserves pass is a good motivation to check out Eswatini for a few nights.

Related reading: Swaziland now has a new name

We may stop in Eswatini on the drive from Kruger to Johannesburg, or we may fly via Johannesburg. The Hilton Garden Inn Mbabane will likely be our best lodging option and it's currently charging 18,000 points or $78 per night for our dates. However, the overnight packages at Mkhaya Game Reserve look epic and relatively affordable, so we may spend a night in one of the park's stone cottages.

dream trips south africa

With four days and three nights in Eswatini, we'll likely drive out to each of three parks covered by our annual pass. Eswatini is a relatively small country, and all three parks are reachable as day trips from Mbabane. I already priced out a rental SUV on AutoSlash , and it will only cost us about $80 to rent a car for four days from Eswatini's international airport.

Five nights just outside Kruger National Park

Kruger National Park is my happy place right now. I've been to the park twice and love doing self-drive safaris there. And there's a Category 2 Marriott property, the Protea Hotel Kruger Gate, just outside the Kruger Gate entrance to the park.

dream trips south africa

We were at this property when South Africa declared a State of National Disaster because of the coronavirus pandemic in March and our five-night stay became a 12-night stay as we canceled onward travel plans and waited for our flight back to the U.S. Even with 13 days of self-safari driving in the park, we never tired of seeing wildlife every day.

dream trips south africa

I could happily spend all of our 19 nights in South Africa at the Protea Hotel Kruger Gate and driving through Kruger National Park. But I'll likely limit myself to just five -- with the fifth award night free -- before moving on to see other parks and reserves.

As a Marriott Category 2 property, a five-night stay at the Protea Hotel Kruger Gate costs between 40,000 points and 60,000 points, depending on whether the nights are peak, standard or off-peak. At TPG's valuation of Marriott points at 0.8 cents each , even at 60,000 points for five nights, you'll come out well ahead of cash prices.

One night near Johannesburg airport

We visited Johannesburg extensively during our first trip to South Africa, so we'll skip the city on this trip and spend the last night near Johannesburg airport at the Category 2 Protea Hotel O.R. Tambo Airport before our 7:55 a.m. flight.

dream trips south africa

If you haven't visited Johannesburg, I highly recommend a few days in the city. There are a lot of places worth visiting, including the Apartheid Museum, Constitution Hill Human Rights Precinct and Soweto.

There are many Marriott properties in Johannesburg and nearby Pretoria, but I'd likely choose the centrally located, all-suites Marriott Category 1 Protea Hotel Johannesburg Parktonian All-Suite in downtown Johannesburg -- which is inexpensive at $41 per night including taxes and fees on some dates.

dream trips south africa

Alternatively, the well-rated Marriott Category 1 Protea Hotel Pretoria Loftus Park looks like a great option if you want to stay in Pretoria.

Other ideas

I'm not at all committed to the itinerary outlined above, so I may substitute some of the following ideas -- or simply include them on a subsequent trip to South Africa.

Visit Port Elizabeth and Addo Elephant National Park

Addo Elephant National Park, the third-largest national park in South Africa, is near Port Elizabeth. We could stay at the Category 2 Protea Hotel Port Elizabeth Marine, which is a 35-minute drive from the Mathyolweni Gate of Addo Elephant National Park and drive out to see the park on a couple days.

dream trips south africa

Addo Elephant National Park allows you to do self-drive safaris and you can even book a hop-on guide who will ride in your vehicle and provide information. Plus, exploring the city of Port Elizabeth, enjoying the beaches and checking out the Addo Elephant National Park marine area would provide plenty to do.

Visit the Protea Zebula Lodge north of Johannesburg

I've had the Protea Zebula Lodge on my to-stay list ever since I researched my piece on Marriott properties where you can stretch your points. This property is a two hour and 23-minute drive from Johannesburg (JNB) and looks to be a great place to just get away. It has a golf course and spa, and is located on 1,100 hectares of pristine bush-veld. And, your points will book you into a bush cottage.

dream trips south africa

I'm looking forward to staying at this property on a future trip -- but since we have a Wild Card this time, I'm focusing on destinations for visiting parks and reserves included on that pass.

Drive the full length of Kruger National Park

dream trips south africa

On our first trip to South Africa in 2015, we spent three days and two nights driving through Kruger National Park from Phalaborwa to Malelane. On our most recent trip, we spent 13 partial days in Kruger, basing ourselves just outside Kruger Gate at the Protea Hotel Kruger Gate. Although the more recent trip allowed for working in the late afternoons and evenings, I enjoyed covering more territory and seeing different climates on our first trip.

The rest camps in Kruger National Park provide a great self-safari experience and have everything from cottages to campsites. But, because of limited cell phone coverage and poor to nonexistent Wi-Fi, these camps aren't conducive to working for extended periods each night. I'm hoping we can drive the full length of Kruger someday when we can both take a week or two off.

Bottom line

My husband and I have already booked trips for late summer 2020 into 2021(many were lined up before coronavirus became a global concern) . Hopefully, South Africa will be one of them. It's difficult to pass up the excellent award availability and cash fares we're currently seeing for travel in the fall and beyond.

But we're well aware that many of our trips may need to be postponed, altered or canceled, depending on when, how and where it becomes safe to travel again. So, for now, we wait and dream about the trips we'll take.

I'm far from the only one at TPG who is dreaming about destinations and future trips . Other TPG staffers have recently written about the destinations they are dreaming about:

  • Dreaming of United's Island Hopper through the Pacific Islands by Zach Honig
  • Dreaming of Mongolia by Alberto Riva
  • Dreaming of French Polynesia by Clint Henderson
  • Dreaming of the Greek Islands by Liz Hund
  • Dreaming of Patagonia by Chris Dong
  • Dreaming of Italy by Samantha Rosen

5 Epic Dream Trips and How to Make Them Happen (Video)

Meena Thiruvengadam is a lifelong traveler and veteran journalist who has visited more than 50 countries across six continents. Her writing has appeared in The Wall Street Journal , Departures , TripSavvy , and other publications.

dream trips south africa

There's nothing like waking up at sunrise in a big, comfortable bed with the Taj Mahal outside your window ā€” except maybe basking in a glorious sunset from the pool of your overwater bungalow in Bora Bora.

Some experiences really are dreams come true, and they don't have to feel like a gargantuan chore to plan. The first step is deciding what your idea of a dream trip is. "For some people, the idea of a dream trip is really just a time out," said Stacy Small, the founder and CEO of Elite Travel International, which focuses on crafting luxury travel experiences for executives, entrepreneurs and celebrities. Small says requests for bucket-list type experiences are fewer and farther between than they once were.

While there are still travelers looking to summit Kilimanjaro and go on safaris in East Africa, "the idea of a dream trip is changing," Small said, adding it's "more about getting the family together." Many families are choosing to travel with young children, often turning vacations into educational experiences, she said.

Whether it's a relaxing escape, a family walk through history, an escape into nature or something you seek, we've got an itinerary for you. Here are five dream trips and what you need to know about planning them.

Relax in an overwater bungalow

If your idea of a dream trip is an escape to a quiet corner of paradise, Bora Bora has an overwater bungalow for you.

The St. Regis Bora Bora Resort offers nearly 50 acres of French Polynesian paradise, featuring the largest over water villas and suites in the South Pacific. Expect to spend your days enjoying crystal blue waters, lounging on white sand beaches and taking in view of picturesque Mount Otemanu, with its rich vegetation.

Bungalows range in size from 1,500 to 3,500 square feet, many with pools, whirlpools, and decks for outdoor dining. Each comes with viewing panels to give you a glimpse of the turquoise water below. Prices for overwater bungalows start at $1,900 during high season, $1,500 during low season, or at 85,000 points for rewards redemption. The St. Regis Bora Bora is part of the Marriott International portfolio, so consider a card like the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Card from Chase , which currently has a 75,000-point new cardmember bonus offer, to make this dream come true.

When you're ready to leave your bungalow, consider visiting a Tahitian pearl farm or taking an excursion lagoon cruise to see sharks and feed sting rays. Don't try to make this one a last-minute dream trip, though. The St. Regis recommends booking overwater bungalows at least a couple of months ahead.

Experience la dolce vita in Italy

If your idea of a dream trip involves beach time, fresh Italian food, celeb-spotting and maybe a yacht, fly into Naples and head toward Italy's Amalfi Coast .

Exploring this region known for its cliffside towns, epic views, limoncello and fresh seafood. From Sorrento, you can hire a yacht or catch a ferry to Ischia, an island known for its thermal baths and fine wines, or to Capri, known for its colorful lagoons. Sorrento is near both Mt. Vesuvius and Pompeii, the ancient city destroyed when Mt. Vesuvius erupted in AD 79, making it easy to delve deep into history when you're ready to take a break from island hopping, sipping limoncello, and sampling gelato.

From Sorrento, you can also rent a car, hire a car and driver, or rent a yacht to explore a half dozen picturesque towns including Amalfi, Ravello, and Positano.

Wake up to the Taj Mahal

If your idea of a dream trip is checking out a wonder of the world, pack your bags and head to northern India. Fly into New Delhi to embark on your journey through India's Golden Triangle.

Hire a car and driver to explore the city's sights, making time to wander around the Red Fort, Qutub Minar, and old Delhi. Pay your respects to Mahatma Gandhi at Raj Ghat, and when you're ready, catch an express train to Agra. Express trains will take you from Delhi to Agra in under two hours. When you're ready to explore the Taj Mahal, plan to spend several hours there and hire a guide to help you spot architectural secrets you might otherwise miss.

After two nights in Agra, you'll likely be ready for something new. Head to Jaipur, India's famed pink city to complete your Golden Triangle experience. From October through March, a trip like this would come in around $2,600 total for a party of two, said Ankur Sharma of Meet India Tours.

Fall asleep to the Northern Lights

If you're looking to experience a natural phenomenon on your dream trip, catch a flight to Reykjavik. Iceland is located at 65 degrees North, at the edge of the Arctic Circle, and offers one of your best chances to see the Northern Lights without the extremely cold temperatures you would have to endure in other parts of Scandinavia.

Start your journey toward the Northern Lights with a dip in the Blue Lagoon, a thermal spa complex located not far from Keflavik International Airport, to shake off any jet lag you may have.

If you choose to stay in Reykjavik, several companies offer Northern Lights tours. If you'd prefer to drive, renting a car is also an option ā€” just beware of the Icelandic roads in winter.

Go on safari in South Africa

If your idea of a dream trip is a crossing a safari off your bucket list, head to South Africa. The country is especially good for first safari experiences as it offers so much more than safaris, said Stacy Small, CEO and founder of Elite Travel International. An easy first safari could start with a flight into Johannesburg and then a road trip to Kruger National Park in the eastern part of the country.

South Africa is home not only to Kruger National Park, but also has beaches, mountains and wine country in addition to bustling cities like Cape Town. "There's a lot to do over a two-week trip," Small said.

And Kruger isn't the only option for wildlife seekers. South Africa is home to several private game reserves as well.

Unpacking South Africa: A Deep Dive into Respecting Local Customs

South Africa , with its vibrant landscapes and dynamic people, is a traveler's dream. But how often do you pause to ponder the significance of the customs you witness? You might be surprised at the rich tapestry of cultures that underpin every greeting, every dance, and every meal. Understanding this is key to an authentic travel experience.

  • South Africa is home to a diverse population with over 10 different cultural groups.
  • Knowing and respecting local customs can enrich your travel experience.
  • Greetings in South Africa are formal and involve specific etiquette.
  • South African cultural appreciation is crucial to bridge cultural divides and foster unity.

The Cultural Melting Pot of South Africa

According to a 2017 report by the South African Department of Arts and Culture, there are over 55 million people in South Africa with diverse ethnic backgrounds.

This contributes to more than 10 different cultural groups, each with its distinct customs, languages, and traditions.

As a traveler, it's not just about snapping photos ; it's about immersion and understanding.

Greeting Etiquette: Handshakes and Head Nods

While roaming the streets of Johannesburg or Cape Town, you're bound to meet friendly faces.

In South Africa, it's customary to greet with a firm handshake.

But be aware : some women may not shake hands and instead nod their head in greeting. And while you're at it, ensure you use titles like Mr ., Mrs ., or Miss until you're invited to do otherwise.

Deep Dive: Why Respecting Local Customs Matters

  • Unity in Diversity: With South Africa's complex past, showing respect to its diverse population aids in healing and unity.
  • Personal Growth: As the adage goes, when in Rome , do as the Romans do. Engaging with the culture enhances your experience and broadens your horizons.
  • Building Bridges: As Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, former Chairperson of the African Union Commission, aptly said, "South Africa has an incredibly rich tapestry of cultures that should be celebrated, respected, and protected." By respecting customs, you're playing a part in building cultural bridges.

Insider Tips from Kevin Erickson: Enhance Your Journey

If you want to truly experience South Africa, Kevin Erickson suggests you:

  • Attend a Cultural Event: Be it a Zulu dance performance or a Xhosa wedding, participating will give you a genuine feel of the culture.
  • Learn a Few Local Words: Even a simple "Sawubona" (Hello in Zulu) can go a long way in building rapport.
  • Ask Before You Click: Always ask for permission before taking photos, especially during traditional ceremonies or rituals.

In the vast tapestry of global travel destinations, South Africa stands out as a beacon of diversity , history , and unparalleled natural beauty. Beyond its scenic landscapes and thrilling wildlife, lies the beating heart of the nation: its people and their rich cultural customs.

As travelers, our journeys are not solely about capturing breathtaking moments through a lens, but truly immersing ourselves in the local ethos and understanding the essence of places we visit.

Respecting local customs is not just a nod to etiquette; itā€™s an ode to humanity, mutual respect, and understanding. Each handshake, nod, or greeting in South Africa isn't just a simple gesture; it's a doorway into a lineage of traditions, stories, and shared history.

Itā€™s about recognizing that beneath our external differences, the core of human emotion, aspiration, and experience remains universally shared. South Africa, with its mosaic of customs, beckons travelers to not merely witness, but to engage, empathize, and embrace.

To truly experience the "Rainbow Nation" , one must delve deeper than the surface, intertwining with its rhythm, its pulse, its soul. In doing so, you're not just enriching your travel diary, but also fortifying the universal tapestry of shared human experiences.

As Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma aptly articulated, the celebration and protection of South Africaā€™s cultural fabric is not just a responsibility for its residents but for every global citizen. So, as you tread its vast terrains, remember that every step taken with respect and understanding is a step closer to a united, harmonious world.

Conclusively, to respect South Africaā€™s customs is to respect its heart, and in that heartbeat, you find the rhythm of a nation that has overcome, risen, and shines brilliantly against all odds.

Why is it essential to understand local customs in South Africa?

Understanding local customs enriches your travel experience, fosters mutual respect, and promotes cultural unity.

How can I learn about South African customs before my trip?

Research online, read travel guides, or even better, connect with locals or expatriates who've lived there to gain insights.

Are all South African customs similar across the country?

No, given its diverse population, customs can vary widely between regions and ethnic groups.

Is it offensive not to greet in South Africa?

Greeting is an integral part of South African etiquette. While not greeting might not be considered offensive, it's certainly seen as impolite.

Which other countries share similar customs with South Africa?

Given its location and history, some customs might resonate with other African nations, but South Africa's diversity makes it uniquely distinct.

Charges: Key/Breakage R500.00 Beach towels, umbrellas Deposit - refundable Parking (Limited) R35.00 per day per vehicle (subject to change) Communal Braai Facilities Charcoal - R120.00 Gas - R80.00 (subject to change) Generator fuel levy (optional) Dear Valued Guest I am pleased to inform you that we have a generator that can maintain full power in all areas of The Peninsula, so we are able to protect you from the current load shedding crisis that South Africa is experiencing. The Peninsula is not able to cover this expense without increasing rates or charging a special levy to owners. After discussion with the Directors a practical solution has been agreed upon and we will be implementing from the 20th January 2023, a R60,00 daily charge for occupants who would like to keep the power on in their suites over the load shedding hours, if you choose this option this will be added to your in-house account to be settled on departure. We are currently experiencing 6 to 8 hours of load shedding a day and for those that agree to pay, the power will stay on 24hours a day and maintain all electrical appliances including air conditioning and hot water geysers. If there is no load shedding no charge for that day will be applied.
