More than 1,500 people unwittingly got stuck on Gronk's Party Cruise

Not everyone on gronk's party ship planned to be on gronk's party ship..

When Rob Gronkowski 's party ship set sail from Miami for a trip to the Bahamas on Friday, the cruise included Gronk and about 700 of his closest friends who signed up for a weekend of drinking and debauchery.

As it turns out though, the cruise also consisted of about 1,600 people who didn't sign up for drinking and debauchery, but got it anyway.

The Boston Globe put together a full write-up of the cruise, which you can read here , and in that story, the Globe notes that not everyone on the ship was there for the Gronk Cruise.

The Norwegian Pearl can hold up to 2,300 passengers and since only 700 were onboard for the Gronk Cruise, that means there were another 1,600 who booked their trip not knowing that Gronk and his hundreds of friends were going to be there drinking as much alcohol as humanly possible.

Although this sounds like a disaster waiting to happen -- I MEAN, A KID COULD BE ON THE GRONK CRUISE -- it sounds like everything worked out.

According to the Globe , "Non-Gronk fans were unfazed by the shenanigans."

For at least one woman, who booked the regular cruise, the fact that that Gronk was onboard turned her weekend into a people-watching fantasy.

"I've been telling my husband, 'John, take a picture!'" Sue Fritz told the Globe . "Hey, the more drunk people there are to laugh at, the better for me."

The non-Gronk fans even got a treat over the weekend: Apparently the Gronk side of the cruise didn't sell out, so the cruise line decided to just mix everyone.

ESPN sent a reporter on the cruise (Sarah Spain) and she described the situation involving the people there for the Gronk Cruise and the people who had no idea there was a Gronk Cruise.

Gronk's Party Ship had everything. (Instagram/Brett1312)

"They opened up the other half of the boat to regular cruise passengers, which sounded hilarious to me the first time I heard it and it's becoming more and more funny as I try to identify which of the many people waiting to board the boat are here for Gronk and which ones think they're on a regular cruise," Spain told the Dan LeBatard Show .

And yes, there were children on the Gronk Party Ship even though they didn't sign up for the Gronk Party Ship.

"There are small children. There are normal old couples holding hands," Spain said, describing the non-Gronk cruisers.

You can read more about the Gronk Cruise by clicking here or by clicking here . There was also a wedding proposal that you can read about by clicking here .

On the other hand, if you just want one video that sums up the Gronk Cruise, I think this one does it pretty well .

The Gronkiest Moments from Rob Gronkowski's Party Cruise

By Jack Moore

Image may contain Sunglasses Accessories Accessory Human Person and Stage

Rob "Gronk" Gronkowski is what would happen if a red solo cup were the star of a Toy Story -esque movie franchise. And now, this walking viral advertisement for Entourage DVDs has his very own cruise! This weekend Gronk and the members of Gronk Nation took a cruise from Miami to the Bahamas. It was appropriately Gronky. Thank god there were people there documenting it on social media for the rest of us.

At one point he offered a couple $10,000 cash to bang in front of everyone.

This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from.

It seems as though the couple passed, which is just bad financial planning if you ask me.

Gronk also danced to Flo Rida. He was surprisingly good in that it seemed like he actually enjoyed dancing to Flo Rida. Who knew?

Instagram content

Also, Gronk's dad was there to RAGE, because as it says on the official flag of Gronkonia: "SOMEBODY GONNA GET PREGNANT TONIGHT."

I also regret to inform you that someone's proposal story now involves Gronk Fest. The world is a dark and scary place.

But maybe the weirdest part of the Gronkening was when Gronk played Family Feud .

How does that fit into a raging party weekend? It doesn't. The only explanation is that as much as Gronk loves partying, that's how much he loves playing the Feud. I imagine the planning for this cruise went like this:

CRUISE DIRECTOR: Okay, so we've got six different club events. DJs. Live performances from Flo Rida and Waka Flocka. Drinking games. Wet T-Shirt Contest. I think we're ready for a killer trip. GRONK: What about the Feud? CD: Oh you were serious about that email? It doesn't really fit with the drinking and the partying vibe. Honestly, I thought you were joking. GRONK: I never joke about the Feud. CD: But won't people think it's weird to just watch you play a family game show instead of, you know, partying on a party cruise. GRONK: They can be drunk while they watch. But I'm only doing this if there's Feud.

Well, Gronk gets his way and the dude loves the Feud.

What he doesn't love is spelling "tackling" correctly:

gronkowski cruise

I’d like you to imagine something for a moment. I’d like you to imagine hundreds of people in matching zebra-stripe Zubaz headbands. I’d like you to imagine them on a tiny island in the Bahamas — a glorified sandbar, really — that hosts little beyond lizards, crabs, coconuts, and Bud Light, 50 miles from the next significant land mass. I’d like you to imagine them tanning and dancing and twerking and cradling bottles of Fireball, and at their center, surrounded by two brothers, a father, and an ever-adjusting wall of cameras straining to get a selfie with him: Rob Gronkowski, All-Pro New England Patriots tight end and designated party cruise captain.

These days, it often seems that Gronk, self-appointed party king of the NFL, is everywhere. He is in ads for the app Mobile Strike, for Nike, for JetBlue, for Madden, for Dunkin’ Donuts, for (of course) Zubaz. He is nude on the cover of ESPN the Magazine’s Body Issue, with a beer bong in the Entourage movie. He has his own brand of hot sauce. His own party bus.

So when the Atlanta-based event company Sixthman announced that Gronk would be hosting a cruise to the Caribbean two weeks after Super Bowl 50, no one was really surprised. It’s so perfectly Gronk, after all, so totally in line with the image he has come to embody that it’s almost as if it were dreamt up by a moony sports columnist.

Last year, Gronk released his autobiography, which was co-written by Jason Rosenhaus, the brother of his agent, Drew Rosenhaus. It’s Good To Be Gronk detailed, among other things: building an indoor slip and slide with his brothers and finding a turd of unknown provenance in a bag of potato chips.

"From day one," Gronk-slash-Rosenhaus writes, "all I ever wanted to do was have fun with my brothers."

That book features a quote from the New York Post at the very top of the book jacket in bolded letters, which reads, "This 25-year-old is one of the best tight ends the game has ever seen. And off the field, he’s unabashedly Gronk — the cruise director of the NFL."

I imagine Gronk reading this, smiling, and then thinking, Hey, wait, what if…?

For all its buzz, the Gronk Cruise didn’t go exactly as planned. Sixthman had trouble selling tickets, which started at $700, so the Norwegian Pearl — a Norwegian Cruise Lines vessel rechristened Gronk’s Party Ship for the weekend — was opened up to the general public. The Pearl has capacity for 2,300 passengers; just 700 of those leaving the Port of Miami were there for Gronk. The remainder booked a standard four-day cruise from Miami to the Bahamas, some paying as little as $200 a head for the privilege.

gronkowski cruise

So on Feb. 19, 2016, we set sail from Miami at full capacity, accompanied by a dozen DJs, three Gronkowski brothers, at least two inflatable zebras, and an incalculable number of Solo cups, bound first for a private island (renamed, naturally, Gronk’s Island) and then for Nassau.

But here’s the thing: Norwegian didn’t tell the people booking the normal cruise that their ship would also host the Gronk Cruise. The first sign that something was seriously amiss came at the port, where an older couple dressed head to toe in purple and waiting to go through security stopped to look around as the woman gasped, "A football player?"

By the first morning, many of the regular cruise passengers had had enough. At the front desk, a duo from Saratoga lined up to complain. This was their platinum cruise — the highest honor in Norwegian’s rewards program, the result of somewhere north of 50 cruises — and they carried laminated key cards from past trips on lanyards around their necks. But they would never have booked this trip had they known it was the Gronk Cruise. They were saying the word "riffraff" over and over.

"They were throwing cigars onto our balcony last night," the man started.

"Which aren’t even allowed on board," his wife added. Riffraff .

But what can you do once you’re on Gronk’s Party Ship?

Everywhere Rob Gronkowski goes, he is followed: by people, by coos, by outstretched Sharpies, by raised iPhones, by calls of Raaahhhhhb! Raahhb, ovah heah! The cruise afforded an almost astonishing level of access to Gronk, his entourage, and the musicians booked to entertain the guests till 4 or 5 each morning: Waka Flocka Flame, Flo Rida, LMFAO’s Redfoo, and others. The VIPs were for the most part siloed in a section of suites on the ship’s top level, but they regularly strolled down the halls of the ship, popping up in elevators and outside the ship’s 13 restaurants and 16 bars. If you went on the Gronk Cruise with the explicit goal of talking to, requesting the signature of, or, as seemed to be the motivation of more than a few passengers, simply touching them, you could pretty much make it happen.

gronkowski cruise

As part of the Gronk’s Party Ship package, each passenger was guaranteed an Exclusive Photo Op with Gronk. I spent most of the wait for mine stroking the fuzzy anti-seasickness patch behind my ear and wondering what would happen if I threw up on Rob Gronkowski.

A fact about me: I happen to come from a long line of sailors who lived long enough to produce heirs and then promptly died at sea. John McNear after John McNear was raised in Maine, wed, produced another John McNear, and then, having ensured the future of the bloodline, sailed straight into the Atlantic, never to be heard from again. The curse was finally broken when a John McNear gave up and decided to head to California in search of gold. He found none but remained landborne, which was all well and good for generations until Rob Gronkowski planned a cruise.

The ocean is my hell. Put me in a vessel, add waves, and misery ensues. As part of my seasickness preparation before the cruise, I spent a lot of time researching the optimal location on the boat: on the lowest decks, as close to the center of the ship as possible. The photoshoot took place on the top deck at the very front of the ship, i.e. the most turbulent place on the boat, and just so happened to occur during the one time the Pearl saw anything like rough seas. People grasped at the tequila shots being passed around and stumbled, bumping into furniture as the boat rolled. I began to sweat.

If I threw up on him, would I be punished? If so, how? The guys in line behind me assured me that there was definitely a jail on board, and they seemed like they would know — the day before, one of them was briefly detained in the Miami Airport’s jail for reasons neither seemed very keen on discussing. "He was released into my custody," said the non-detained one, six or seven times.

In the end, miraculously, I did not throw up on Gronk, and I was handed, along with everyone else, a complimentary pair of Zubaz shorts and matching fluorescent headband. Gronk spent the two-hour photo session gamely following the lead of each set of guests: flexing when people flexed, looking shocked as two girls kissed him on either cheek, letting people pull up his shirt and touch his horrifyingly well-defined abs. By the time I was called up, near the end of the session, he seemed bewildered, and very much like someone who has been asked to politely greet strangers for multiple hours as flashbulbs went off every 10 seconds. On the way out of the photoshoot, several women bragged about grabbing Gronk’s butt during their photos. I staggered out to the deck for fresh air, where a woman in a pink rhinestone Gronkowski shirt was thrusting to "Hollaback Girl," piña colada in hand.

The Brothers Gronkowski

The Pearl set sail with just three of five gigantic Gronkowski brothers. Glenn, the youngest brother, announced in January that he would forgo his senior year as fullback at Kansas State to declare for the NFL draft; while his brothers were at sea, he was back in Florida training for the combine. Dan, the second-oldest, had been planning for the cruise for a long time: he and his wife, Brittany, timed her pregnancy around it. She’s not due till June and was ready to set sail till Zika happened. Then it was just going to be Dan, but — wouldn’t you know it — the damn thing can be transmitted sexually, so Dan, Brittany, and the intact cerebellum of the world’s next Gronkowski stayed back in upstate New York.

So it came down to Rob, Gordie Jr., Chris, and their father, Gordon Sr., alias "The Creator," alias "Papa Gronk," alias "Big G," a former offensive guard at Syracuse who went on to raise a small army of boys in Buffalo. Those boys were: drafted by the Angels (Gordie Jr., in 2006, the lone Gronkowski not to take up football), drafted by the Lions (Dan, 2009), picked up by the Cowboys (Chris, 2010), and drafted by the Patriots (Rob, 2010). If things go well — which is to say, if they go as they are meant to — Glenn will make five-for-five, a clean sweep of this generation’s professional athleticism, a quintuplet of gigantic, buoyant, Polish-American boys barreling across yards and yards of our nation’s finest fields.

Big G is pretty pleased.

gronkowski cruise

He runs an athletic equipment company out of a Buffalo suburb these days, filling homes and gyms and homes with gyms, like Big G’s, with the Precor EFX Precision Series and leg press machines. Gordie Jr. and Dan both help out now that their athletic careers are through. Business is booming, Big G says. Just booming .

Someone asks him where he got his sunglasses and he says he doesn’t know. "Oakley just sent them to me."

Big G calls Big G "Big G," too, as in, "Big G got nothing on Mojo Rawley," said, fawningly, to Mojo Rawley — WWE wrestler, friend of the family, and special guest on Gronk’s Party Ship. While his sons were backstage at the weekend’s various concerts and events, safe from grasping Patriots-themed fingernails, Gordy Sr. was mostly among the passengers, beaming, dancing, posing for selfies, and accepting congratulations on his brood from the many, many people eager to offer them.

Wouldn’t you want to throw a party like this for your family?

gronkowski cruise

The narrative is that of the brothers Gronkowski, a clan of superhuman athletes. But in truth, the name "Gronk" refers to only one of them. In a Visa ad released last year, Gronk walks around town in his 87 jersey, receiving high fives, tables at fancy restaurants, cakes from elderly ladies, and general adulation — only to turn around and reveal himself to be Dan Gronkowski, not Rob. Rob Gronkowski’s memoir is titled It’s Good To Be Gronk . The reality is it’s good to be one Gronk in particular.

Take Chris Gronkowski, for example. A day after Rob was drafted by the Patriots, Chris was signed by Dallas, reportedly with a paltry $10,000 signing bonus. His brief career in the NFL had perhaps its most notable moment in October 2010, when Chris, then a fullback with the Cowboys, missed a block, allowing Giants linebacker Michael Boley to pummel into quarterback Tony Romo. Romo was leveled and immediately came up clutching his shoulder; hours later, the team announced he had fractured his clavicle, ending his season. It’s the same clavicle that was rebroken last year, twice, again relegating Romo to the sideline.

How many undrafted fullbacks who suited up for three different teams during a three-year career ever get the opportunity to autograph somebody’s back on a private island, as Chris Gronkowski did?

gronkowski cruise

Gronk’s Island

On the small boat shuttle to the island, a very muscular man with no shirt on tried to convince the passengers around him that he was Glenn Gronkowski. "I got combine in one week," he slurred.

"SIDDOWN, CHRIS!" one of his friends yelled.

Mojo Rawley, head wrapped in a Zubaz headband, stood up, bouncing as the ship began to move. "TIP THE BOAT!" he screamed. "TIP THE BOAT!"

On Gronk’s Island, a group of men stood in a lagoon and pumped their fists to the bassline. A stage had been set up, and Gronk joined the DJs periodically. When he spied a couple making out at the front of the crowd, he screamed 15 words that a guest caught on camera, which made headlines around the web. Any other NFL star — any other star, period — might quickly have come to regret those words, have needed to apologize for them, but instead they made everyone shake their heads and say, Oh, Gronk…

"I’ll give you ten grand cash right now if you bang in front of everybody."

The couple declined.

gronkowski cruise

The Sixthman promotional materials promised a particular kind of paradise on the island: "Bro’s and Babes line the beach of Gronk’s very own private island with the sole intention of livin’ it up!"

"If this doesn’t sound Gronk’d enough for you," they continued, "then you’re not ready to party with the big dogs."

Don’t you want to party with the big dogs?

The island’s main event was, ostensibly, a flip cup tournament, featuring teams with names like Gronkaholic, Gronk-meowski, and DTF. As the afternoon wore on, Gronk eventually joined in. Allow me to tell you something that you probably do not know for certain, but which deep down you have probably always known: this was clearly not Rob Gronkowski’s first game of flip cup. When his team — which included his father and his brother, Chris — inevitably won, he and his fellow victors huddled and cheered, and then Gronk started leaping, bouncing up and down, taking off on his surgically repaired ACL and MCL, pivoting, leaping again. Chris’ career ended after he tore his hamstring; after Rob’s knee surgery in 2013 and a string of operations and complications to a forearm injury, many speculated that his days of dominance had come to a close. Instead, he followed up with a career year that concluded with a Super Bowl victory. It’s good to be Gronk.

gronkowski cruise

All around him, passengers on Gronk’s Party Ship clamored for autographs. He signed most everything that was offered to him: jerseys, hats, a woman’s right butt cheek. A second woman in a Patriots bikini showed off a signed breast.

"I was like, sign me anywhere!" she said by way of explanation.

"Some chicks backstage showed me their titties," Gronk told the crowd, climbing back onstage from the small VIP section security set up behind it. "So front stage…."

He trailed off suggestively, at which point the crowd, always willing to follow his lead, screamed "TITTIES!" at a trio of bikini-clad women sitting on people’s shoulders as they danced. Gronk slipped backstage again and as the moments ticked by, still with no titties shown, the DJ yelled, "Show your titties!" The women did not.

Nearby, a group of men bought a bottle of Fireball from a beachside bar. As they passed it among themselves, they chanted: GRONK! GRONK! GRONK!

gronkowski cruise

The Gronk vintage of partying is a sort of platonic ideal of frat culture. Here, when you wake up with a hangover — which you will, often — you laugh as you remember, hazily, everything that happened. It’s a world where no matter how drunk you get, you make only silly decisions and never bad ones, and when you engage with the opposite sex — which you will, even more often — the sex will be fantastic, readily given, and enthusiastically, ecstatically consensual. Partying is only fun in Gronk’s world. Bad things don’t happen.

That doesn’t mean, of course, that Rob Gronkowski’s life, and specifically his partying, are as sunny as they’re portrayed to be. In May 2014, Gronkowski made headlines after he was photographed partying with Johnny Manziel in Las Vegas, the two of them surrounded by women in bikinis. Gronk was rehabbing an injury at the time, and critics accused him of not taking his training seriously. Here were two football stars who had adopted partying as part of their public brands — one already an All-Pro and AFC champion, the other the Heisman winner, freshly drafted by the Browns and certain to begin compiling his own NFL accomplishments soon. You know what happened next: the rehab, the alleged drinking during the season, the demotion by the Browns, the neighbor’s call to 911, the helicopter search for a man accused of hitting his girlfriend so hard she lost hearing in one ear.

Rob Gronkowski, for all his partying, has never been accused of any wrongdoing. But it’s hard not to look at the things he does in public and wonder where they will lead him once he’s no longer scoring touchdowns, once he’s too old to play the frat boy he makes himself out to be, once it’s not charming anymore, once he no longer receives the benefit of the doubt.

Gronk has built a brand where he can be filmed motorboating a woman in a bar shortly after judging a bikini contest, as he was in May, and instead of being castigated, face something that often seems eerily like praise. Through some combination of charisma, on-field talent, and more mysterious forces, including, one thinks not insignificantly, that he is a 6’7 white man from Buffalo, every salty thing he says is treated at worst as a benevolent quirk. Add to this that in spite of his self-stated propensity for hard liquor, he never seems out of control. As his party ship sailed out to sea, he occasionally hinted at some boundary he was mindful of: when Mojo Rawley bobbed toward him on stage late one night, fists raised as if to play-fight, Gronk gave a quick shake of his head and Rawley backed off.

For now, his fans just want to see him win, badly. They’ve seen a lot of it: in Arizona, at Foxborough, in Super Bowl XLIX. The last night on the ship, Gronk joined his brothers in a round of Family Feud against a group of passengers. Wearing matching cutoff jumpsuits, the Gronkowskis were aggressively terrible, rarely allowing the increasingly exasperated host to get more than a few words of a prompt out before guessing an answer, usually something drinking-related. The audience loved it.

"Chicks!" Gronk, who had by this point in the voyage lost his voice, rasped when asked to name something you wouldn’t want anyone to borrow. "I won again!" he wheezed into the microphone when "significant other" was revealed on the board.

But the Gronkowskis’ tactic proved less than successful, and when it came time for a bonus round, they were eliminated, leaving only the winning group of passengers to play. Gronk then feigned sadness, suggesting he was too disappointed to continue partying with passengers that night — at which point the winning team begged him to change his mind and forfeited the round to Team Gronk to keep them on the stage.

"He must be sooo drunk right now," a woman in the audience gushed admiringly.

On Monday, the ship returned to port, and passengers wobbled down the gangway, clutching their heads and wearing T-shirts that said "I PARTIED WITH GRONK."

"My niece asked me what getting gronkd meant," a passenger wrote in the cruise’s Facebook group a day after the trip ended. "I told her it was getting drunk but not fall down drunk. It was being the happiest you have ever been."

Gronk Cruise: 700 Patriots Fans, 13 Bars and One Rob Gronkowski

gronkowski cruise

By Victor Mather

  • Feb. 23, 2016

A three-day cruise to the Bahamas full of Patriots fans, with the fun-loving Rob Gronkowski as the star attraction. Who thought this was a good idea?

Apparently, the ship returned to port on Monday none the worse for wear. What happens on a cruise ship doesn’t stay on a cruise ship in the age of social media, and passengers and Gronkowski himself sent out running updates of the high jinks:

Insanity times this weekend on the cruise. Appreciate everyone for coming out! — Rob Gronkowski (@RobGronkowski) February 23, 2016
Appreciate the artist and DJ's for coming on and making this the most turnt up event ever. pic.twitter.com/NxwYLEu9mR — Rob Gronkowski (@RobGronkowski) February 23, 2016

(For those not in the know, “turnt” is a good thing.)

The ship was the Norwegian Pearl, a 965-footer with a spa, casino, bowling alley and, perhaps most important, 13 bars and lounges. The Gronk Cruise left Miami on Friday for the Bahamas with 2,300 passengers, 700 as part of the Gronk cruise and the other 1,600 apparently in for more than they bargained for.

Some reporters with indulgent editors were also on board. A comprehensive report in The Boston Globe — the paper that also brought you the Pulitzer Prize-winning series that turned into the film “Spotlight” — noted, “Festivities hit booze-addled, fist-pumping heights and carried on till nearly 4 a.m. each day.”

“Am I having a good time? Oh my God, yes! Although I kind of don’t remember last night. I might have blacked out,” The Globe quoted a woman who declined to be identified: “There’s absolutely no way I’m telling you my name.” Gronkowski posted several photos to Instagram , including one of him busting a move shirtless on stage as an appreciative crowd looked on.

Still photos not enough? Then enjoy a video. The cruise was run by the Atlanta company Sixthman , which will be offering excursions with Kid Rock, KISS and Pitbull in the near future. Neil Genzlinger of The New York Times took a Rock Cruise with the company in 2014 and gave it an enthusiastic write-up . Several of Gronkowski’s brothers made the Gronk Cruise even Gronkier, and at least one other celeb turned up.

In the end, the ribaldry seemed to stay all in good fun, revelers reported. The Globe said, “At press time, the fun never seemed to be excessive, nor was the ship turned upside down or trashed by rabid fans.”

And all good things must come to an end, which even Gronkowski knows:

Come Sail Away

Love them or hate them, cruises can provide a unique perspective on travel..

Icon of the Seas: Our reporter joined thousands of passengers on the inaugural sailing of Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas . The most surprising thing she found? Some actual peace and quiet .

Th ree-Year Cruise, Unraveled:  The Life at Sea cruise was supposed to be the ultimate bucket-list experience : 382 port calls over 1,095 days. Here’s why  those who signed up are seeking fraud charges  instead.

TikTok’s Favorite New ‘Reality Show’:  People on social media have turned the unwitting passengers of a nine-month world cruise  into  “cast members”  overnight.

Dipping Their Toes: Younger generations of travelers are venturing onto ships for the first time . Many are saving money.

Cult Cruisers: These devoted cruise fanatics, most of them retirees, have one main goal: to almost never touch dry land .

It’s 2:58 a.m. Gronk’s Party Ship is docked in a Bahamian port of call. I’m catching the tail end of a musical performance on the fifth deck of the ocean liner with my wing-person designate, a college friend we’ll call Charlie. Waka Flocka Flame, the rapper, is funneling distilled liquor down peoples’ throats. Redfoo, a performer of uncategorizable genre, formerly of three-hit wonder LMFAO, parades around in zebra-stripe undies. Mojo Rawley, a semiprofessional WWE grunt, makes love to the air with an inflatable palm tree. Audience members have begun crawling up onto the stage, zombielike, past indifferent security guys. In the thick of it is our dazed ringmaster, Rob Gronkowski, swigging Grey Goose and, I guess, twerking.

Drink handy, I’m mostly enjoying myself. But Charlie is disturbed by the spectacle. “Gronk should get off the stage,” he says. “These other guys are clowns. He’s the greatest to play his position ever.”

It’s a fair point. Why is probable future Hall of Famer Rob Gronkowski sharing oxygen with these C-listers? At one point Gronk loses his balance and falls down. He was fine, but imagine if he hadn’t been. Gronkowski Suffers Career-Ending Injury After Slipping on Puddle of Tequila Spilled by Redfoo.

I assumed that once he was on board, Gronk might try to avoid such a calamity and recede to the background. It seemed more plausible that his father and two of his brothers—also aboard the Gronk’s Party Ship maiden voyage—would do the public relations work while the star tended to his failing knees in a secret whirlpool. Meanwhile, thousands of Gronk-starved guests would wander the boat listlessly, searching in vain for their beloved Polish-American tight end.

Not so! Rob Gronkowski was admirably present, drinking steadily and gyrating to much music. Having intentionally neglected to research the FAQs of celebrity cruisedom— research didn’t seem to be in the spirit of the SS Gronkowski —it slipped my attention that celebrities usually fraternize with fans on their own cruises. Besides, Gronk had a brand to cultivate. What is Gronk’s brand? Gronk’s brand is frat-row joie de vivre. Gronk’s brand is posing shirtless for a magazine spread while draped in kittens. Gronk’s brand is humping a duck boat during the Super Bowl victory parade while wearing a Minions hat.

Gronkowski claims in his 2015 memoir, It’s Good to Be Gronk, that he hoards his football salary and lives entirely off endorsements and appearances. A Miami-Nassau-Miami party cruise represented his most intuitive marketing opportunity yet. He could do what he seems to do anyway—remove his shirt and pound shots with his brothers—while building brand equity. Meanwhile, paying customers would get the chance not only to meet the great specimen, but also to channel his very essence.

From the promotional literature:

It’s time to PARTY, it’s time to ROCK, but more importantly, it’s time to get GRONK’D! Rob Gronkowski and his family want you to grab your sunnies, your swimsuits, your babes and your bros for one hell of a shindig sailing down the coast.… If this doesn’t sound Gronk’d enough for you, then you’re not ready to party with the big dogs.

A long weekend aboard Gronk’s Party Ship also struck me as a great opportunity. Here, hundreds of nautical miles from Coach Belichick and the rest of the Patriots’ PR apparatus, I might catch Gronk unguarded and in his element. Factor in the bros, the Massholes, the mysterious solo travelers, Redfoo—and the ground was fertile for a little drive-by pop sociology.

The ground was also fertile for drinking three days’ worth of Bud Light Lime and making the occasional note on my iPhone. For grabbing my swimsuit and partying with the big dogs. For getting Gronk’d.

The party-boat company running the Gronk cruise, an Atlanta outfit named Sixthman, encouraged people to travel en masse. I invite Charlie, a Patriots fan with man-of-the-people tendencies I thought would serve us well. We meet on a Friday morning in February at Miami International, make a pit stop in South Beach to buy obnoxious straw fedoras, then journey on to the Port of Miami.

Our ride is a 12-deck, 965-foot hulk of a skiff named the Norwegian Pearl . She was built in Germany 10 years ago and “christened” at the Port of Miami by her “godmother,” Rosie O’Donnell—apparently a longtime friend of Norwegian Cruise Line. The Pearl ’s claims to fame include hosting the band Kiss five separate times, as well as causing a power outage that affected the entire European continent while passing through the Ems River in Germany in 2006.

After taking some useless wide-angle photos of the boat, we enter a kind of holding pen where our bags are scanned and tickets checked. Immediately, something feels off. I spot a handful of 87 and 12 jerseys, but mostly I see people for whom a Gronk cruise seems wildly inappropriate: toddlers, the elderly, couples in love. I walk up to two senior ladies and genially ask if they are “ready to Gronk?” I’m met with a friendly but uncomprehending look. “What’s a Gronk?” one of them asks back.

gronkowski cruise

This past weekend Rob Gronkowski's inaugural Gronk Boat party cruise sailed from Miami to the Bahamas for three days of island-hopping, concerts and fun. Before the boat ever left port, the imaginations of intrigued landlubbers had already gone wild. Sex, drugs and body shots on the open seas! Creepy "bros," objectified women, players behaving badly! Once photos and videos from the cruise started to hit social media, those back on shore tried their best to spin them into something that might fit those expectations. Unfortunately, they didn't get much to work with, just scene after scene of people enjoying some good old fashioned (occasionally drunken) fun and displaying some incredibly entertaining dance moves.

From what I've read and heard since returning to shore, the narrative about the Gronk Boat seems to have been built entirely by people who weren't on it. Everybody from media hoping to expose some sort of wrongdoing by a famous NFL player to everyday people "concern trolling" over their imagined treatment of women on the boat. One tweeter said it was hypocritical for me to be a feminist and go on the Gronk Boat. Others asked why "any woman" would ever want to go on the trip.

What is it about a party cruise that's inherently "sexist?" I can't think of a damn thing. The insinuation that a woman going on a party boat is setting herself up for chauvinism is frankly insulting -- to both men and women. Frozen drinks, tropical weather, private beaches, intimate concert venues and dance parties are pretty universally liked; there's no reason why men should enjoy them freely while women are judged. Let's give all those "concerned" folks out there the benefit of the doubt that they don't believe that women just drinking and dancing is problematic. So if it's not the idea of a party cruise itself that's troubling, then it must be a party cruise with the Gronkowski family, right?

So what is it about the Gronks that makes some people imagine the worst? Is it just the neon outfits, the big muscles and the crazy amounts of energy? Part of the reason the Patriots' tight end is so beloved by fans is that he's fun-loving and down to party, but never comes across as mean-spirited, lascivious or creepy. He's perhaps the greatest tight end the game has ever seen, stays out of legal trouble and enjoys a good party in the offseason. Unless you're the kind of person who gets worked up over that one picture of him with a porn star a few years back, you'd be hard-pressed to find something he's done that's controversial. And while his Zubaz, tank tops and vocabulary ("chicks" and "bros" are two of his favorite words) might be a bit meatheaded, he's not someone who's earned a reputation for sexism or misogyny.

Men who like to work out, dance and party should not automatically be implicated as part of the "bro culture" that's become a talking point in recent years. Real, damaging "bro culture" excludes and alienates women and minorities, makes for an uncomfortable and sometimes hostile workplace or classroom, and isn't something to be taken lightly. It's unfair to point to the Gronkowski family as part of that problem, particularly when the Gronk Boat was remarkably inclusive and friendly to all.

From the two widows in their 60s who love the Patriots to the pre-teen boys who kept popping up at the concerts with their parents, everyone was invited to dance, jam out to the live performances and have fun. The concert stage wasn't restricted to "hot girls," there weren't VIP rooms where the celebrities disappeared all day and night, and there were no standbys of "Spring Break" culture like body shots, wet T-shirt contests or the like.

The boat seemed to take on the persona of its namesake, with everyone mirroring Gronk's innocent, fun-loving attitude. No fights, no name-calling and no cliques. Just people having fun, making new friends and partying together. I know that might sound impossible, but don't you think you'd be in a pretty good mood if you and your friends were partying with your favorite player and a handful of famous musicians on a beautiful ship in perfect weather?

Maybe it's more fun to hear people speculate about a nightmare scenario than believe someone who was actually there, but why hope for the worst? With our country perhaps more divided than ever, can't we celebrate the magical moments when people forget their differences and just embrace the good stuff? And if Gronk's ridiculous dance moves, an insanely entertaining Flo Rida concert, a couple of daiquiris and a 24-hour buffet are enough to get 750 people all jamming to the same beat, then I say "Where do I sign up for next year?"

Brand Marketing

Why rob gronkowski is taking 2,500 fans on a ridiculously lavish pleasure cruise, nfl star's sea voyage is just the latest extension of his brand.

gronkowski cruise

NFL star tight end Rob Gronkowski  obviously knows how to play football. He's three years into a six-year contract worth $54 million with the New England Patriots. But the 26-year-old Gronkowski (or, as fans know him, just Gronk) is even better at playing the endorsement game.

Gronk has put his name and inimitable grin on  Dunkin' Donuts , BodyArmor sports drink and Zubaz sweat pants, to name a few. In fact, "to this day, I still haven't touched one dime of my signing bonus or NFL contract money," Gronk revealed in his 2015 book, It's Good to Be Gronk . "I live off my marketing money."

Well, come early next year, Gronk will be able to stuff a few more bills into his piggy bank—but not from hawking clothes or food or another book. Nope. This time, Rob Gronkowski is going to sea.

gronkowski cruise

On Feb. 19, 2016, Gronk's Party Ship will cast off from the Port of Miami on a three-day cruise to the Bahamas along with Gronk, his family and, says the website, "2,500 of his most hype'd up fans." There will be plenty of room for those fans, too: Gronk is taking over the 93,530-ton  Norwegian Pearl —not just a block of cabins, the whole ship. To put this in Gronk scale, the ship is roughly two and a half football fields long. And to quote Gronk himself (in the promotional video), it's a "big-ass cruise ship," where everyone can "come hang out with the family, listen to music, play some games and get Gronk'd." (With 13 bars on board, getting suitably Gronk'd shouldn't be too hard at all.)

SixthMan , a themed-cruise operator owned by Norwegian Cruise Line, will be running the excursion that, in keeping with Gronk's party-boy reputation, promises to be nonstop bacchanalia. But according to communications director Alaidriale Derway, the big reason to buy a ticket is a chance to lift a brewski with the big man himself.

"What's really important for us is to break down the barriers between the fans and the brand," said Derway, who ticks off a list of activities that will be both Gronk-themed and Gronk-attended, including a Q&A session, a game of Family Feud and photo ops with Gronk or one of the Gronks ("Papa Gronk" Gordon, Chris, Gordie Jr., and "Baby Gronk" Glenn).

gronkowski cruise

There's also an eight-hour beach party at a place called—wait for it—Gronk's Island, which is actually Great Stirrup Cay , a 250-acre cay that Norwegian bought from Belcher Oil Company in 1977.

gronkowski cruise

Hanging with the Gronks won't come cheap: $225 per person, plus your quarters, which range from a $600 interior cabin to a $950 ocean view cabin on Deck 8. Nevertheless, Derway said the ship is mostly sold.

There's no word on how much of the proceeds will go to Gronk's hyped-up bank account, but he's hardly first to discover that going to sea can be a highly effective way to extend a brand, not to mention being a decent revenue source.

Next month, for example, six famous toques from the Bravo show Top Chef will board the Celebrity Reflection for a  cruise filled with "duel-style cooking demonstrations" and classes for passengers. In January, Norwegian will host its annual Walker Stalker Cruise (currently sold out), featuring 10 stars from AMC's The Walking Dead. And next January and February, the Disney Fantasy will host a Star Wars Day at Sea .

Author and travel expert Mark Murphy said themed cruises like these "put a face on the brand and create a personal relationship" with fans. And while a tropical cruise exposes a celebrity or company to fewer consumers than mass forms of marketing, it works because of what Murphy calls the selfie effect—"You take 3,000 passengers and each of them is sharing photos with 400 to 500 friends, and suddenly you're in the millions."

Derway adds that celebrities—even those at the peak of their fame, like Gronk—need to consider marketing tactics that will give them personal interactions with fans because that's what fans have come to expect. Famous athletes and performers "have discovered that if you don't actually make some sort of connection with your biggest fans, they'll forget you," she said. "If you're a brand, you have to do something that touches someone's life. You have to do something people will talk about and tweet about. That's the only way to do it these days."

The idea for Gronk's Party Ship actually originated with the Gronkowski family, which has enjoyed plenty of exposure from the Gronk Party Bus , a 25-passenger leasable coach stuffed with Gronk merchandise. (The Twitter account for the bus has attracted 10,900 followers.) Gronk's Party Ship basically takes that idea, multiplies it 100 times and sends it out into the ocean.

Of the Gronkowski family talent for having a good time, Gordie Jr. has previously said that "we make sure we party rock the whole time." On this cruise, they'll be able to do that literally:  Red Foo of LMFAO—which brought us "Party Rock Anthem"  in 2011—will be among the musical guests.

Aboard Gronk’s Party Ship, these folks know how to party

Travel writer Chris Muther and former music critic James Reed lived aboard the Gronk Party Ship this weekend.

The cruise — hosted by Patriots tight end and party boy Rob Gronkowski and his family — set sail from Miami on Friday and traveled to “Gronk Island” (which we’re pretty sure isn’t the island’s real name) in the Bahamas. Several big-name musicians have been in attendance, including Flo Rida and Waka Flocka Flame. Activities included a flip cup tournament, family feud, and dancing around in tank tops.

Here’s a catalogue of Muther and Reed’s tweets about the people making up the party. You can also follow the pair on Twitter: @chris_muther and @jreedwrites .

Moscow River

Moskva river has the form of a snake and is the main waterway of Moscow, consisting of a cascade of reservoirs. Within the city, Moskva river is 80 km long, 120 m - 200 m wide and up to 14 m deep. The narrowest part of the river is the Kremlin area in the city center, and the most extensive is around the Luzhniki Stadium in the south.

Bridges in Moscow

Undoubtedly, bridges and embankments are among the most scenic spots and main attractions of Moscow. Plus, they are so romantic.

  • Bolshoy Kamenny Bridge –  Great Stone Bridge –  is the main bridge of Moscow . The first stone bridge was constructed here in the 17th century.
  • Patriarshy Bridge  is one of the youngest pedestrian bridges, built in 2004. The bridge connects the iconic Christ the Saviour Cathedral with funky Bersenevskaya embankment, extremely popular place among locals for its trendy art galleries, cafes and panoramic views. Patriarshy Bridge used to be a shooting location for ex-Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's New Year speech to the nation.
  • Borodinsky Bridge,  erected in honor of the 100th anniversary of the glorious victory in the Battle of Borodino (which every Russian kid knows about), a fierce legendary battle during the Russo-French war of 1812.
  • Bagration Bridge  one of the  pedestrian bridges with most picturesque views of the Moskva River with its numerous upper-level observation platforms. The bridge was erected to celebrate the 850th anniversary of Moscow city in 1997.
  • Krymsky Bridge  used to be in Top 5 Europe’s longest bridges some 100 years ago. The bridge got its name after the ancient Krymsky ford which Crimean Tartars used to invade Moscow in the 16 th  century.

Embankments of Moscow

Moscow river boats 37 embankments, the most popular being Kremlevskaya, Sofiyskaya, Pushkinskaya, Vorobyovskaya and Kolomenskaya.

You can get the most spectacular views of the Kremlin from  Kremlevskaya and Sofiyskaya embankments.

  • Pushkinkaya embankment  is the most romantic in Moscow. It meanders along Gorky Park and Neskuchnyi garden and is rich for all kinds of entertainment as well as cozy nooks, including Olivkovy beach, the famous Zeleny theater as well as a pier for river cruisers.
  • Vorobyevskaya embankment  is part of Sparrow Hills nature reserve. This place opens a beautiful panorama of the river and city from the observation deck and is considered to be the place for taking serious decisions in life.
  • Embankment in Kolomenskoye  Museum-Reserve has a special charm due to its peculiar geographical relief. The boat trip around Kolomenskoye would be the most peaceful in your life.
  • Taras Shevchenko embankment  is popular among photographers for its modern Moscow City skyscrapers. Highly recommended for your night boat trip.
  • Embankments of Moscow are the pride of the capital. A distinctive feature of each of the promenades is its architecture and beautiful views. In addition, almost all the embankments of Moscow have a rich history and a lot of notable buildings.

Different epochs

Taking a walk along the Moskva River by boat, you will witness the architecture of Moscow from different eras and styles. Archaeological studies indicate that already in the XI century there stood a fortified settlement on Borovitsky hill, which is now called the Kremlin. Little fortress could not accommodate all the residents of the rapidly growing city, and the Grand Duke ordered the construction of a new Kremlin, larger than the former.

Boat trip around Kolomenskoe Park

Moscow river boat trip starts from the pier Klenovy (Maple) Boulevard and provides reat views of Nicholas Perervinsky monastery.

Nicholas Perervinsky monastery was founded at the time of the Battle of Kulikov (1380). The monastery, got its name from the surrounding area – “Pererva”, which can be translated like “tear off” and because of the location –  here it abruptly changed its course, turning to Kolomna, standing on the opposite bank.

Nowadays Kolomenskoye is State Art, Historical, Architectural and Natural Landscape Museum-Reserve, which doors are open to everyone who wants to get in touch with the ancient history of Russia.

Take a break from the big city hustle in the shady parks and gardens of the Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve. Don’t miss a wonderful Church of the Ascension and Tsar Alexey’s Palace in Kolomenskoye!

Monasteries and temples

  • Novospassky Monastery
  • Founded in the 13th century on the site where now is located the Danilovsky monastery. After a few decades, in 1330, Ivan Kalita moved the monastery onto the Borovitskii hill of the Kremlin. However, in the 15th century, Spassky Monastery again moved, this time to a more spacious place on Krasnoholmskaya waterfront.
  • Church of St. Nicholas in Zayaitskom
  • Erected in the middle of the XVIII century in baroque style. The building survived after the 1812 fire, but the utensils were destoyed. Parishioners collected donations and restored the temple on their own. In Soviet times, it was closed and re-opened only in 1992.
  • Cathedral of Christ the Savior
  • The church was originally erected in honor of the victory over Napoleon and was being under construction for long 44 years. Notoriously demolished in 1937 to be a giant swimming pool under open sky. The current building was constructed in 1990s. It is the tallest and one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world.
  • The temple was built in 1679-82, during the reign of Tsar Fedor Alekseevich, in late Muscovite Baroque style and can be characterized as bonfire temple. Each gable is a symbol of a heavenly fire.
  • Novodevichy Convent
  • The most famous concent and monastery in Moscow, presumably founded in 1524. Novodevichy’s status has always been high among other monasteries, it was in this monastery where the women of the royal blood, the wives of Tsars and local rulers of Moscow were kept in prison as nuns.
  • St. Andrew’s church  (male acts as Compound Patriarch of Moscow)
  • St. Andrew’s church stands right on the slopes of the Sparrow Hills, on the way down to the Moskva River, on the territory of the Nature Reserve “Sparrow Hills”. The monastery is small in size but is very cozy. It’s situated in a quiet courtyard surrounded by temples, fruit trees and flowers.
