Loire Cycle Path: Wild-romantic all the way to the sea (from Orleans to St-Nazaire)

Fantastic trip. Hotels were tremendous, especially the meal in the hotel in Saint Florent-le-Vieil. Maps were good though I used my app Bikemap.net, to act as a Sat Nav. A couple of hiccups with luggaeew but minor in comparison with holiday organisation. Would certainly recommend.

The luggage was always on site, the hotels so O.k. and the description was good. For the navigation I was glad about the Garmin Navi.

Loire Valley Cycle Tour

Loire Valley Cycle

I travelled solo on the self guided Loire Valley Cycle. This was my first experience self guiding and it was a great introduction. The cycle routes mainly along cycle paths and country roads were usually well marked and the route notes & overview maps provided helped me to find my way – a few wrong turns here and there when I wasn’t paying attention, all part of the experience! Locals were always welcoming and went out of their way to help. The mix of 2 and 3 star hotels were well chosen for their charm with good locations, simple & plentiful continental breakfasts, delicious 3-4 course dinners if you choose the half board option for all nights (I was fit to bursting by the last day) and staff were always courteous. One of the highlights was the hotel in Chitenay which had a peaceful outdoor courtyard where dinner was served as we had good weather and a pool to make the most of the last of summer in September. The bikes were sturdy and suitable to the mostly flat terrain with rolling hills, typical for a wine growing region where you also have the opportunity for wine tasting and visiting the many chateaux along the way. The standout chateau was in Chambord – impressive just from the outside alone, well worth a look inside. Luggage transfers worked smoothly. Thanks UTracks for a great first experience self guiding and in the Loire!

Cycle the Loire - Nevers to Orléans Tour

Cycle the Loire - Nevers to Orléans

Bike was good. Holtels were good. First half of the route (Nevers to Sancerre) was good. Second half (Sancerre to Orleans) not so good (power station, often away from the river, uninteresting countryside).

Self guided cycle tour. The gps app was easy to use and kept us on track. The route was certainly hilly but we two 70+ coped without problems. The dinners were very good with a preponderance of duck and foie gras.

Are you unsure if your legs are up to tackling some of our more moderately graded tours in Dordogne or Provence? Do you want to make your easy-going France biking vacation a little bit easier? - you are on vacation after all! - then, opting for E-Bike hire is for you.

By no means "cheating," E-Bikes are commonly being coined as the "great equalizer" in cycling, as you will still pedal the same distance, but the electric rechargeable battery is there to give you a boost when you need it. They are an excellent tool for helping you feel confident on some long days or steeper sections that you may otherwise feel unsure about.

It's possible to upgrade to an E-Bike on a lmost all our cycling tours in France .  However, if  it's a tailored E-Biking experience you are looking for, then check out our E-Biking in Provence  tour!

Top Tip: Further to the apparent benefits, E-Bikes are actually just great fun to ride, especially on the quiet country lanes in France - that extra zip of pedal power almost takes you back to being a kid again!

Upgrade to an E-Bike in France?

Macs Adventure has been running self-guided walking & biking tours in France since 2008 . Our tours in France initially started with walking the Tour du Mont Blanc, which led us to seek out more and more areas where we could help people discover France on foot and bike.

From humble beginnings, we now send over 2000 walkers and cyclists to France every year , each biking or walking the route that excites them the most. We provide the freedom to choose your path, itinerary, and travel companions and discover France at your own pace.

We know how daunting it can be, setting off on an adventure of this scale, and we quickly realized how important it was to have excellent partners on the ground in France to deal with any issues that you might come across. We are proud to say that we work incredibly closely with all our accommodation suppliers and luggage transfer teams, and should you have the slightest issue, they will fall over themselves to help you out.

We offer a unique range of biking tours, showing a different slice of regional France.  Expect comfortable, friendly overnight accommodation in local B&Bs and guesthouses. We carry your bags to lighten your load so you can concentrate on enjoying the unique culture, food, and scenery of France. No hostels, no leaky tents, no heavy bags on your back, just a straightforward active vacation that you can book with confidence that we have it all covered for you.

Why Choose Macs Adventure to book your Biking Vacation in France?

Burgundy - The most famous dish is the Boeuf Bourguignon (Beef Burgundy). This beef stew is made using the distinctive Burgundian red wine, which sets it apart from any other beef stews you may have tried. The beef is slow-cooked and tender, and the stew typically includes carrots, onions, garlic, and a bouquet garni (bundle of thyme, parsley, and bay leaves) then is garnished with pearl onions, mushrooms, and bacon. Usually served with potatoes, this is the perfect hearty meal after biking in Burgundy.

Provence -  If you are looking for some sugary treats to eat while biking in Provence, then look no further than the Calisson. These diamond-shaped sweets are made with almonds and have a marzipan consistency but with the fruity sweet taste of melon. So stock up and pretend just like they will make it home as gifts!

Loire -  Tarte Tatin, the story goes that two sisters accidentally created the Tarte Tatin at the Hotel Tatin in Lamotte-Beuvron, which they ran in the center of the Loire Valley in the 1880s. There are many variations of the story, but the most popular is that one of the sisters was trying to make an apple pie but was overworked that day and left the apples cooking in butter and sugar too long. She then tried to save the dish when she smelt burning by putting the pastry base on top of the apples in the pan then finishing it in the oven. When she took it out, she flipped it upside down so that the apples were on the top then served it to the guests, who loved the new dessert, much to her surprise.

Dordogne -  Fraise du Perigord are strawberries grown in the Dordogne region of France and must meet strict criteria to be sold. From sugar content to shine, the strawberries are put through their paces! They have an intensely sweet flavor and must be shipped 48 hours after harvest. So if you are full of deliciously rich food but still have some room for a light dessert, then why not buy some strawberries and ice cream? They won't be hard to find in this strawberry showcasing region.

Arrive in Avignon

Highlights: the City of the Popes, the palaces and the bridge.

Arrive in Avignon, which is easily accessible from Paris by TGV, to enjoy the City of Pope, ground-zero for the Catholic Schism during the Middle Ages. Visit its well-preserved ramparts, the Palace of the Pope, and famous bridge. Meet our representative for an orientation talk and bike fitting at the hotel, a historical luxurious property in the center of Old Avignon.

Ride from Avignon to Uzès

Highlights: Stunning Pont du Gard, Uzès

Today's route will head out of Avignon through forests and vineyards to visit the spectacular Roman aqueduct Pont du Gard, which dominates the river at over 165 feet high. You will cycle on to Uzès, a beautiful Provencal village with a rich history and beautifully tree-lined streets. Dinner included tonight Daily distance: 54km (34 miles) Elevation gain: +522 m (1712.6 ft)

Loop ride from Uzès

Highlights: More spectacular villages and stunning landscapes, Uzès' market

The ride today will head north of Uzès where you will find plenty of colorful vegetation and quiet roads. It's one of our favorite rides through small charming villages such as Vallabrix and Saint Quentin la Poterie, a dream spot for ceramic enthusiasts, where you will find lots of shops and a museum. If you come here on a Saturday, you will get to experience the colorful market of Uzès, an experience of its own. Daily distance: 39 km (24 miles) Elevation gain: +450 m (1476 ft)

Pedal from Uzès to Arles

Highlights: Ledenon, the fortification of Meynes, Arles and its Roman Heritage, Vincent van Gogh

Before arriving to Arles, head in the direction of Collias today, where you will witness the marvelous confluence of the Gardon and Alson rivers. Visit Ledenon, famous for its wine production, and the village of Meynes, a historical village that preserved its fortifications. Once at Arles, don't miss the extraordinarily well-preserved Roman arena, the Roman Theater, and the town museums, with one completely devoted to the art of Vincent van Gogh. Daily distance: 60 km (37 miles) Elevation gain: +293 m (961 ft)

Ride from Arles to Saint-Rémy-de-Provence

Highlights: Les-Baux-de-Provence, Gallo-Roman ruins, Abbey of Montmajour

The ride is not too long today, so you can spend some time in the morning visiting Arles and the many sites to see in this old Roman town. On your way to Saint-Rémy, you will pass by the Abbey of Montmajour, a stunning view with its eight centuries of architectural history. But not much can prepare you for your first glimpse of the impenetrable fortress of Les Baux. Perched on a high, rocky crag, the Lords of Baux ruled the entire valley at their will for about 600 years. It takes a short steep climb to get there, but you'll be rewarded along the way with a beautiful route that winds into the Alpilles hills through pine forests, amazing rock formations, and old Roman quarries. There's no better place to end your ride today than the town of St. Rémy, where Van Gogh made over 150 paintings, and filled with lovely cafés, restaurants, monuments and museums. Daily distance: 29km (18 miles) Elevation gain: +290 m (951 ft)

Loop ride from Saint-Rémy-de-Provence

Highlights: Eygalières, small country roads, Les Alpilles

Today you can take a rest day and start the morning relaxed, finish visiting what you missed in Saint-Rémy yesterday. Alternatively, you can then take a scenic loop ride to Eygaliéres and the Alpilles through vineyards and olive groves with the chance to visit and taste the wine and olive oil of the region. The ride can be modified to be shorter cutting out hills (round trip to Eygalieres). Daily distance: 44 km (27 miles) Elevation gain: +480 m (1575 ft)

Ride from Saint-Rémy-de-Provence to Avignon

Highlights: Abbey of Saint Michel de Frigolet, Avignon

You will head out in the direction of Avignon passing by the villages of Graveson and Barbentane where you can have lunch and visit the Abbey of Saint Michel de Frigolet from the 10th century. Upon arriving in Avignon, you can tour the city exploring its historical sites and experience the cultural richness of Provence represented everywhere in this city. Daily distance: 43 km (26 miles) Elevation gain: +250 m (820 ft)

The Tour ends in Avignon - Au revoir!

Highlights: End of tour, au revoir!

The tour ends today after breakfast. Take your time enjoying your last breakfast before departing for your next destination or for your flight back home. Au revoir! PLEASE NOTE: The final itinerary, including hotels and/or activities described here, are subject to changes according to availability. City hotel taxes are not included.

Understanding self-guided bicycle tours

Travel and Cycling Tips

self guided bike trips france

  • We loved our Provence with Youngsters cycle trip including our 3 kids aged 8, 12 and 14. Perfect distances and quiet, flat roads with some lovely village stops en route. We did a few 20km practise runs at home to ensure we could all do the distance (mainly the 8 year old) which was enough training...on the trip we stopped a few times for hot chocolates, then lunch in a field (usually a picnic with local produce). By the time we arrived at our destination early afternoon we were ready to chill out at one of the wonderful B&Bs selected for the tour. Highly recommended!

  • If you are planning a cycling vacation, I highly recommend this company! The Geneva to Alpe d'Huez tour was amazing! Everything I expected and more. Bruno, Deanna, Lucy and the team are very helpful and responsive and they ensured we had a lovely trip! I would definitely do this again!
  • Fantastic company - they provide : 1)first class carbon road bikes ( Wilier), inner tubes , pumps, tools to fix your bike en-route. When our bike was broken, they found and delivered replacement in an hour! 2)great hotels - mostly all of them has swimming pools, great meals and lovely rooms 3) maps and navigators with detailed advises on restaurants, places of interest etc 4)they offer most picturesque and interesting routes, besides, you can choose between short and long options which is handy.
  • The selfguided trip from Geneva at the first stages of Via Rhone, through a wonderful landscape and Seyssel, Chapagneux, Perouges to Lyon, the accommodation was splendid
  • The owner of Cyclomundo Bike Tours, Bruno, is a man of integrity. He responded quickly to my email questions. While on our trip, he and his staff were always supportive of our requests, including driving two hours to pick us up during a rain storm. I recommend Cyclomundo as an excellent, honest company to do business with.
  • star star star star star_border
  • Cyclomundo did a superb job - wonderful accommodations and food (we recommend the upgrade) and very good equipment. The bikes were new hybrids and we think this makes sense. Road bikes would have had some problems with gravel on some of the smaller trails. Provence is absolutely beautiful - vineyards and historic villages. We suggested to Cyclomundo that they consider bike GPS - the maps and directions were good but sometimes a bit confusing. Overall we would definitely use Cyclomundo again!

--> A week in Provence!! " Bespoke cycling for all levels, exceptionally well maintained modern bikes and the opportunity to experience the countryside riding through lavender fields and vineyards. Neil and Nat offer a unique cycling holiday for everyone! Every aspect of this experience is a treat. For this return visit we chose to stay in the 17th Century Farmhouse so we had the luxury of the smorgasbord breakfast prepared by Neil, making new friends and sharing our daily experiences cycling the countryside . Two three course sensational dinners are included during the 6 night stay by Chef Neil. It’s also great to stay in the one place and cycle out to different hilltop villages each day. Over the years Neil and Nat have continued to evolve the cycling experience . Carefully mapped Garmin GPS routes (this is where you will really appreciate the experience) guiding you through vineyards, poppy and lavender fields set this cycling holiday apart from the rest. Daily briefings including “watch outs, best places to stop, where to explore and eat” where greatly appreciated. All supported by well detailed and mapped trip notes. All the planning and thinking is done for you. Even dinner recommendations and bookings are made for you. Having the swimming pool available for pre and post ride swims is fabulous! An extensive range of bikes are on offer to suit beginners through to very experienced cyclists which means this trip can be enjoyed by all members of the family. We chose e-bikes this trip so we could ride further and easily enjoy the countryside. If self-catering is more your style then their villa in a village nearby is a wonderful option. The bikes and daily cycle briefings still accompany this option. We had the opportunity of visiting the villa and the pool during this stay - it's gorgeous and we would definitely consider this option when we return. We have been travelling for 6 weeks in France and this holiday has been the highlight of our trip so far." Cycle Break in Provence, France. - Travelbuggill - Australia - June 23 - 5* Tripadvisor review. Unparalleled cycling experince in Provence. "Nat & Neil, our checkout day has arrived, and we are sad to go! What a lovely time we have enjoyed at your beautiful villa. Cycling in Provence was a long-delayed goal from the summer of 2020, but it was worth the wait! Thank you for accommodating us in every way! The detail & preparation you put into every part of our experience is unparalleled!! From suggesting daily rides based on predicted wind conditions, to reserving spots at some extraordinary local restaurants, you helped us to make every moment count. You have our higher recommendation, and we can't wait to return!." Villa Bike Tour in Provence, France. - The Cook Family - US - July 23 - 5* Guestbook review. --> Not To Be Missed! "If you are planning to visit this area, please consider seeing it with the help of Provence Cycling Holidays ! You will not find a more authentic travel experience than this! Great people, great conversation, wonderful food (& wine), excellent bikes, fantastic routes, charming villages, spot on suggestions. I could keep going but the best thing to do is experience it for yourself. Let hosts, Neil & Nat and their children show you how to enjoy the French countryside. Whether you are an experienced rider or just want to try something different, they will make it work for you! " Bike Trip in Provence, France. - Travel261149 - Can - June 22 - 5* Tripadvisor review. Excellent biking getaway! "We just returned from our second trip to Provence Cycling Holidays. Neil and Nat are fabulous hosts, the bike rides are gorgeous and beautifully laid out. We get to choose where we want to go each day and take off on our own with the amazing Garmin GPS directing us at every turn. The cards have info about where to eat and what to do in the villages we are passing through that day. If the weather is not great, Nat and Neil have lots of ideas for hiking or museums or more. And the breakfasts are amazing as well as the two family style dinners we shared with the family. This is a must do on the list of anyone that enjoys biking in Europe!." Cycle Break in Provence, France. - Jane - US - Oct 21 - 5* Tripadvisor review. --> A wonderful week cycling in Provence. "Our group had a fantastic time at Provence Cycling Holidays. We felt completely at home with Neil and his engaging family. He was patient with us as our plans evolved at the last minute during the pandemic. The bikes provided met our requests with some using the standard hybrids, some on road bikes and one on an ebike. The rides suggested to us from his library or custom plotted were appropriate to each of our desires, from longer, harder road rides to moderate hybrid tours through amazing scenery to some of the most beautiful villages in Provence. The food, recommendations and information provided were all terrific. If you want a cycling vacation in a beautiful part of the world where you feel at home and part of the family and where you are extremely well looked after, this is the place to go." Bike Tour in Provence, France. - Doreen - Can - Sept 21 - 5* Tripadvisor review. Great cycling holiday! "This B&B provides self-guided bike tours in the Provence area of France. This business provides pre-loaded routes on Garmin Edge bike computers. The owners take great care in helping guests select routes to maximize their enjoyment. Our group had both pedestrian and hardcore cyclists and everyone loved the cycling routes they chose and had a great time. The owners are first class and made everyone feel like they were part of the family. The B&B rooms were very nice and the food was fantastic! No COVID issues." Cycle Tour in Provence, France. - Dale - Can - Sept 21 - 5* Tripadvisor review. 5* comfort with awesome cycling! "Dear Neil & Nat - Our first time & hopefully not our last! We have so thoroughly enjoyed staying at your gorgeous Les Taillades Villa. Everything we hoped for! I would recommend this experience to anyone who enjoys 5* comfort combined with awesome cycling in the Luberon . We were so very lucky to experience this, thank you so much for running this for tourists. All the very best!" Bike Tours Provence - Christina & Mike - NZ - June 2019 - 5* Villa Review. Wonderful cycling week. "Another good vacation, this time at your beautiful Taillades Villa. Five fabulous days of riding! The villa was delightful: clean, spotless, well supplied and our tours were well planned and delightful. Everything was taken care of down to the last detail. Thankful you came to see us each day to give us the benefit of your insight and counsel on ride selection, restaurants and sites." Cycling Holidays France - Bonnie, Tim & friends - US - June 2019 - 5* B&B Tripadvisor Review. Simply Fabulous. "Spent 6 nights here in beautiful Provence. An absolutely fantastically located base for touring round this lovely area under Neil’s expert guidance. The B&B is immaculately run by Neil & Nat. Would not hesitate in recommending this place to anyone! Well done Neil, Nat & the kids." Bike Holidays France in Provence - Mike M - UK - July 2019 - 5* B&B Tripadvisor Review. Absolutely merits 5 stars! "As all previous reviews state, what a fantastic and quality set-up. The Villa is beautiful and so well equipped. The bikes and the sat nav's showing the best routes to amazing villages with least effort all just perfect. The hosts Nat and Neil work tirelessly to ensure that everyone who stays with them either in the Villa or their B& B get the best out of their holiday. Absolutely merits 5 stars. Thank you both. We have very happy memories." Cycling Tours France, Provence - Lorna - UK - May 2019 - 5* Villa review. It fitted our needs to perfection. Highly recommended! "We are a family of 6 and stayed at the self-catering villa in Taillades. It was splendid. We loved the set up of the villa - the huge well-equipped kitchen, spacious living areas and comfortable rooms. It fitted our needs to perfection - we had privacy and all the support we needed from Nat & Neil. Our days were spent cycling on one of the many routes programmed on the GPS and Neil would point out the restaurants and highlight sights we should not miss. The bikes were in tip-top condition and it was so helpful that they provided helmets. Nat & Neil were helpful, engaging and wonderful hosts. Highly recommended!" Bike Vacation in Provence - Caroline - Singapore - June 2018 - 5* Villa Review. Super Provence Biking! "We can't say enough about what a wonderful vacation we had cycling in the beautiful Luberon area of Provence . Neil and Nat and kids are fantastic hosts in their lovely farmhouse complete with fabulous meals and atmosphere. It was great meeting new people from other places. Real family feel, very comfortable. Highly recommended! We hope to be back soon!" Cycle Tours France in Provence - Bonnie - US - May 2018 - 5* B&B Tripadvisor review. A big thank you to Neil, Nat and family. "We had a wonderful trip, the bikes were perfect and the GPS navigation took all the worry out of directions. Our hosts Neil and Nat, briefed us every morning on our rides. With the easy GPSs, we were able to enjoy the beauty of the area, stunning views and delightful little villages to explore, including markets , lavender , galleries, churches, and lovely cafes and restaurants to enjoy our lunches. I thoroughly enjoyed my week, a big thank you to Neil, Nat and family." Bicycle Holidays in France, Provence - Heather - Australia - May 2018 - 5* B&B Tripadvisor review. A fabulous holiday and highly recommended! "We stayed at the Taillades Villa in June 2017 with a group of friends and had a brilliant time. The villa was beautifully furnished and equipped to a high standard. The Garmin route guides took us on quiet tracks and roads that we would never have found ourselves, and were a real bonus as there was no map reading required. Neil and Natalene were really helpful with advice on the rides, which restaurants to try and the best places to visit. All in all a fabulous holiday and highly recommended!" Cycling Vacation France, Provence - Julia H. - UK - July 2017. - 5* Villa Review. Exceeded our expectations in every way! "We're just home from a truly memorable way to experience Provence and our best (four so far) self-guided cycling tour . We honestly couldn't have asked for a better six days. As a small, family-run business, Neil and Nat invite you into their home and lives - you don't get this experience with a large cycling company. We'd love to return and try out their new villa in Taillades." Bike Trip in Provence, France - Sue - US - June 2017 - 5* B&B Tripadvisor review.

One of the most picturesque regions of France, Alsace is also one of the most cycle-friendly. Designated bike paths and quiet country backroads provide a perfect passage along the Rhine, passing Hansel and Gretel style houses overlooked by imposing medieval castles. There is plenty of opportunity to explore the cobblestone streets of quaint villages and marvel at the impressive Romanesque and Baroque churches. Gastronomic delights are plentiful in this corner of France and you can sample some of the Alsace's finest produce as you travel through undulating farmland, orchards and vineyards. Electric Bike

An electric bike is available on request. A supplement applies, see below.

Electric bikes, or e-bikes, are designed to make cycling easier. The pedaling ‘boost’ provided by an e-bike opens up more options, allowing people of different fitness levels to cycle together or for cyclists to take on routes they may otherwise consider too tough for their current fitness capabilities. Please note that e-bikes are heavier than normal bikes and given the higher speed possible, should only be ridden by confident cyclists. Minimum age for e-bike rental is 12 years and a minimum height requirement is 148cm / 4ft10in.

self guided bike trips france

moderate

The cycle is moderate (3) grade with daily cycles of between 39 and 65km (24.5 and 40mi), or you can choose the more challenging 'sports' option should you want longer rides (between 75 and 111km/46.5 and 69mi) between the same towns. The terrain mainly flat or gently undulating, with days 3, 4 and 7 involving some steeper ascents and descents. You will ride mainly on cycle paths, on minor agricultural tarred roads or on small secondary roads without much traffic. The accent is on keeping a relaxed pace to take in all of the attractions, with time to stop and take photos. You will need a good level of fitness to participate fully in this adventure. It is considered suitable for fit beginners and children aged 12 and over who are used to pedalling on hills and over time. If you are not used to cycling then we recommend that you include as much cycling on roads in your pre-trip training. This is to get used to cars passing you at times and will be invaluable practise for when you are entering and leaving towns and cities when on the trip.

Level 1 Easy Our easiest trips. Well suited for beginners, seniors and families, who are looking for a relaxed cycling event. Flat routes with sometimes a gentle slope. Short distances; not more than 35 km/21 miles per day. There’s still enough time ‘to smell the flowers’. Often trips along rivers and seashores like the Loire river or the Atlantic Coast. Level 2 Easy to moderate These trips, for the ones who are cycling now and then, are a bit more challenging. Still these cycle adventures remain relaxed holidays. The steep slopes are short, while the longer slopes are not so steep. The landscape varies from flat land to gently hills. The distances, which are not more than 50 km/31 mi, make the cycling days a bit longer. Level 3 Moderate These are trips for more sportive people who are cycling regularly and having a good condition. The slopes are longer and steeper, the daily distances mostly between 50 km/31 miles and 65 km/40 miles. There are more challenging days during these holidays. Often these trips are taken place in the more hilly and a bit mountainous regions.. Level 4 Moderate to streneous  For those who want to search for their cycling limits and have a splendid condition. Some big climbs, long and demanding distances (mainly more than 65 km/40 miles) makes those trips a challenging event.  Those cycle adventures are taken place in the more mountainous regions of France. Level 5 Streneous These challenging adventures are only for the experienced cyclists who have done those kinds of longer and strenuous trips before. The combination of long daily distances with regularly steep climbs are making these challenges great for the ‘tough few’.
