Biarritz is one of the most popular beach destinations in southwestern France. The city is part of the French Basque Country and lies along the Bay of Biscay, only 18 km from the Spanish border.

What to Do in Biarritz

What to do in Biarritz, France? Here’s the list of the best things to do in Biarritz – places to visit and Biarritz activities – with something for every traveler.

1. Lighthouse of Biarritz

biarritz travel and leisure

At Pointe Saint-Martin, the northernmost point of Biarritz, there is a magnificent lighthouse, built in 1830, that sits atop a rocky cliff 79 meters above the water. You can climb the 248 steps to reach the top of the lighthouse, from which you can admire the splendid panorama below.

The best time to visit the lighthouse is towards sunset, which you can enjoy fully from the headland. Pointe Saint-Martin and the Lighthouse are Biarritz’s best spots to see the sun go down.

2. Les Halles (Covered Market)

biarritz travel and leisure

French food markets are incredible places to visit. They are much more than somewhere to purchase groceries: they are social and artistic hubs.

Biarritz’s Les Halles (indoor market) was built in 1885, and its cast-iron structure is incredible. The market is divided into two buildings. You will find stands selling sweets, cheese, meat, and typical products in one building. The other is dedicated exclusively to freshly caught fish.

Les Halles is one of the best places to see in Biarritz and a great place to stop for a quick lunch in the city. You can find many stalls preparing local food inside the markets. This is also one of the best areas in Biarritz for dining: the pedestrian streets around the market’s buildings are occupied by casual restaurants offering delicious food.

TIP: Discover (and taste!) the specialties of the Basque Country while visiting the best of the city with this Biarritz Gourmet Tour .

3. Plateau de l’Atalaye and Rocher de la Vierge

biarritz travel and leisure

If you want an incredible 360 degrees view of the coast of Biarritz, the best place to stop is Plateau de l’Atalaye. This is one of the best Biarritz things to do, and you can reach this elevated viewpoint through a series of small ramps.

From the Atalaye Viewpoint, you will also have a clear view of the Rocher de la Vierge . This famous landmark is a rock that stretches into the sea with the statue of the Virgin Mary at its highest point. The Virgin is regarded as the protector of fishermen and was placed on the rock in 1865.

You can take a closer look at the Rock of the Virgin by walking through a metallic bridge designed by Gustave Eiffel.

4. Aquarium

biarritz travel and leisure

Facing the Rocher de la Vierge, there is Biarritz’s Aquarium . The building that houses the Aquarium is in art deco style and has been expanded to include the Musée de la Mer.

The Aquarium is one of the best things to do in Biarritz for families. Inside the Aquarium, the pools show the marine flora and fauna typical of the Bay of Biscay, the North Atlantic, the Caribbean, and the Indo-Pacific areas. The two most popular parts of the Aquarium are the shark cave and the seals’ tank.

The Aquarium of Biarritz opens every day from 9.30 am to 7.30 pm and from 9 am to 10 pm in July and August. By visiting the Aquarium, you will also gain fascinating insights about Biarritz’s historic whaling history.

5. Port des Pêcheurs (Fishermen’s Port)

biarritz travel and leisure

Port des Pêcheurs is Biarritz’s original borough. The fishermen came to settle here around 1780, and little by little, fisheries were set up there. The very first one, the Silhouette fishery, was built on the site of the current “bassin à flots” (the first basin when a boat enters the port).

The Port conserves its ancient charm: the row of cottages where the fishers used to live are now restaurants serving fish and seafood, and you can still admire the high walls of the harbor, built in this way to protect the boats when the ocean was rough.

6. Beaches of Biarritz

biarritz travel and leisure

Biarritz is particularly popular as a summer beach vacation spot and a surfing destination, so there are beaches for every kind of traveler.

The most famous beach is the Grande Plage . Centrally located, it is Biarritz’s main beach. Grande Plage is fringed by the city’s grandest buildings, the Hôtel du Palais and the Casino. Grande Plage’s soft sandy beach and decent swells make it ideal for casual bathers and surfers alike.

If you are looking for a quieter experience, the Petite Plage is the spot for you. This small beach is situated along the rocky cove of Port-Vieux. The position shelters the beach from winds and waves, making it perfect for families with young children.

La Plage de la Côte des Basques is the dream of any surfer ( rent your equipment here ). The story goes that this beach became the first place where anyone surfed in Europe in 1957, during the filming of “The Sun Also Rises.” But don’t let the story enchant you: the strong waves and rocky seabed mean this Biarritz surfing beach is suitable for experienced surfers only!

7. Hotel du Palais

biarritz travel and leisure

Originally called Villa Eugénie, Hotel du Palais was Napoleon III’s favorite residence for his wife Eugenia, who spent the summer here.

The gorgeous palace was built on the orders of Napoleon III around 1855 for his beloved consort, a dedication visible in the building’s shape: it has a particular “E” shape from the Empress’s name. Following the collapse of the Second Empire, the palace reopened as a luxury hotel-casino.

The likes of Sinatra and Coco Chanel stayed here in the 20th century, and since 1993 the Hôtel du Palais has been listed as a historic landmark in France.

Today, the Hôtel du Palais is one of the 5-star palace hotels in France. For a unique Biarritz holiday, book your stay in this palace hotel .

8. Casino of Biarritz

biarritz travel and leisure

Directly in front of the Grand Plage, you will find the Casino of Biarritz , another stunning art deco building.

Built in 1929, the opulence of this building is truly fascinating! You can decide to sit for a while under its portico while sipping a glass of wine or venture inside. You can enter the building even if you aren’t going to try your luck: you can sit at the bar, admire the art deco skylights and floor mosaics, and feel the atmosphere of the roaring twenties.

The Casino opens every day from 10 am to 3 am (the games start at 8 pm). Just remember that you can only enter the Casino of Biarritz if you’re wearing fancy clothes!

9. Take a Day Trip from Biarritz

Saint Jean de Luz - French Basque Country

The Basque Country is known for its amazing countryside as well as its pretty villages, so make sure you get out and enjoy one of our suggested Biarritz day trips.

Take the time to see the coastal town of Saint-Jean-de-Luz , with its old harbor, beautiful architecture, and sea promenade. Don’t forget to taste the macarons, Saint-Jean’s specialty: they are delicious!

Bayonne is an excellent destination to learn more about the Basque culture. Bayonne’s Old Town hides many surprises, and it is perfect for a day of sightseeing.

15 Best Things to Do in Biarritz (France)

Biarritz had been a humble whaling town on the Atlantic Ocean before it was discovered in the 1850s by Empress Eugénie de Montijo, the wife of Napoleon III. The couple commissioned an extravagant  summer home on what was then just sand dunes, and so the Hôtel du Palais and Biarritz’s reputation as a getaway for nobility were born.

To this day it’s a cultivated, upmarket kind of place, with regal 19th-century architecture and supreme beaches. Take sophisticated strolls by the ocean on promenades and in parks with hydrangeas and tamarisks. Or ride the waves at Europe’s first ever surf beach, christened in 1957.

Lets explore the best things to do in Biarritz :

1. Rocher de la Vierge

Rocher de la Vierge

From the tip of this adapted rocky outcrop you can look up to the Bay of Biarritz or down to the Côte des Basques, even making out the outline of the Pyrenees far behind.

For centuries the rock had been used as a whale-watching platform and in the 19th-century, at the behest of Napoleon III, it was connected to the coast with a wooden bridge and the statue of the virgin was fixed on top of the rock.

This was replaced by a metallic one in 1887, named after Gustave Eiffel of the Eiffel Tower, even though he had nothing to do with the structure.

2. Grande Plage

Grande Plage

Biarritz’s main beach is fringed by the city’s grandest buildings, like the Hôtel du Palais and the Casino Barrière.

It’s an enticing golden bay with soft sand, just what you need for a sunny afternoon in the company of friends, family or a good book.

Grande Plage gets decent swells, so the beach is shared by casual bathers and surfers, and in July and August it can get a little crowded.

You could always retreat up the steps for an ice cream and a jaunt along the dignified promenade.

To the rear of the beach  is a long line of colourfully striped tents that you can hire for half a day, along with beach chairs.

3. Port des Pêcheurs

Port des Pêcheurs

In stark contrast to the imposing hotels above and along the shoreline, Port des Pêcheurs is a modest harbour built by Napoleon III for the town’s fishermen in the 1800s.

You can get down to it on the scenic path from the Musée de la Mer.

The walls of the harbour are high to protect the boats when the ocean is rough, even if fishing vessels have now been replaced by pleasure craft! The row of cottages where the fishers used to live are now restaurants serving fish and seafood, and it’s an adorable place to come for dinner with the sun going down in the evening.

4. La Côte des Basques

La Côte des Basques

The story goes that in 1957 when the American screenwriter Peter Viertel was in Biarritz filming The Sun Also Rises, he had his surfboard shipped from California and caught the waves at this beach.

So Côte des Basques was the first place where anyone surfed in Europe.

Despite being attached to a posh resort favoured by high society, the beach is as untamed and exposed as you can get.

Surfers and stronger swimmers will love it, apart from at high tide when the water comes all the way up to the roadside and everyone has to clear off.

To appreciate the size of the beach at low tide climb up to the Avenue de Notre Dame at the cliff-top and take in the seascape from a bench.

5. Biarritz Lighthouse

Biarritz Lighthouse

At Pointe Saint-Martin, marking the boundary between Biarritz’s rocky coast and the smooth sands of Landes, the city’s lighthouse sits atop a rocky headland 79 metres above the water.

It has been guiding mariners since 1834 and the current lenses are more than a century old, dating to 1904, with a range of 26 miles.

It has been fully automated since 1980 and you’re free to go inside if you’re in the mood to take on the 248 steps to get to the gallery deck.

Or you could remain below, as this headland is one of Biarritz’s best spots to see the sun go down.

6. Aquarium de Biarritz

Aquarium de Biarritz

If you’re a fan of deco architecture you may fall in love with this attraction facing the Rocher de la Vierge before you even go inside.

The Musée de la Mer building was completed in 1933, and the whole attraction went through a big renovation and extension in 2011, doubling the amount of exhibition space.

You’ll gain fascinating insights about Biarritz’s historic whaling history and watch a 40mm movie shot by Jacques Cousteau.

There’s a surprising number of live tanks and enclosures for an attraction of this size,  and you’ll travel through zones, with marine life from the North Atlantic, Caribbean and Indo-Pacific.

The shark cave goes down well with the crowds and it’s always fun if you can watch the seals at feeding time.

7. Église Russe de Biarritz

Église Russe de Biarritz

Eugénie invited the Russian aristocracy to join her in Biarritz in the summer, and the wealth that they brought with them helped transform the resort.

After a few decades the community was so large that they needed their own place of worship.

And they got one in 1892, designed in the neo-byzantine style and built in just two years.

The church is an enlightening  look back, not just at Biarritz’s past but Russia’s too, as the interior is adorned with icons transported from St. Petersburg.

8. Hôtel du Palais

Hôtel du Palais

Eugénie’s summer palace is still the most striking building in the city.

Where it was once alone on the dunes it is now the heart of the resort that grew around it, and following the collapse of the Second Empire it reopened as a luxury hotel casino.

Believe it or not, the palace was in disrepair in the post-war years, though it was soon restored to its imperial glamour in the 50s The likes of Sinatra, Ava Gardner and Coco Chanel stayed here in the 20th century, but  for most of us it’s something to admire from a distance!

9. Imperial Chapel

Imperial Chapel

A few dainty steps from the Hôtel du Palais is Eugénie and Napoleon’s private chapel, built in 1864. The design has clear Spanish influences, Spain being the Empress’ home country, with neo- Mudéjar arches and painted tiles (azulejos) decorating walls inside.

The highlight of the interior is the painting of the Virgin by the artist Louis Charles Auguste Steinheil above the chapel’s sanctuary.

Also check out the enamel medallions on either side of the apse depicting members of the House of Bonaparte.

10. Casino Municipal

Casino Municipal

Directly in front of the Grand Plage the Casino Municpale, from 1929, is another vivid and not-so-subtle reminder of Biarritz’s status in days gone by.

It’s an expansive and opulent art deco building and you might find yourself drawn to the shade of its portico for a glass of wine or post-meal digestif on sunny days.

If you plan to go inside you’ll need to be dressed up, and once through those doors you’ll be transported to the roaring twenties, with croupiers that remember your bets and respond to your slightest wink or nod.

Pull yourself away from the table to appreciate the art deco skylights and floor mosaics.

11. Les Halles de Biarritz

Les Halles de Biarritz

French food markets like this are much more than a place to purchase groceries; they’re little cathedrals, a social hub and the place to discover the produce and delicacies that generate regional pride.

Biarritz’s market, with its cast-iron supports, was built in 1885 and should be visited even if you don’t need anything in particular.

Laid out is cheese, pate, fresh meat, fruit and vegetables, so you may just decide to change plans and have a picnic.

You might also head into the adjoining seafood market to indulge in oysters that are shucked for you while you wait.

12. Cité de l’Océan et du Surf

Cité de l'Océan et du Surf

You can buy a ticket that combines the Aquarium with this museum. The Cité de l’Océan is a striking modern building designed by Steven Holl Architects in collaboration with Solange Fabião.

The museum explores Biarritz’s relationship with the ocean via an array of interactive and multimedia exhibits most likely to appeal to kids.

For example there’s a virtual reality surf experience and the “bathyscaphe”, an theatre showing  a 3D movie taking you down into the Gouf de Capbreton, an underwater chasm 3,500 metres deep off the coast of Biarritz.

13. Musée Asiatica

Musée Asiatica

One of a select few Asia-oriented museums in France, the Musée Asiatica is a pleasant surprise, with large collections of artefacts from China, Nepal and Tibet, arranged almost at random.

The largest galleries are reserved for the Indian subcontinent and take up the building’s entire basement.

In this department you can peruse Bronze Age weapons and a host of Buddha statues, textiles, jewellery and handicrafts from a dizzying array of time periods.

From Tibet and China you’ll discover prehistoric jade carvings made for burials and a fabulous set of Thangkas, Buddhist paintings made on silk.

14. Surfing

Surfing

Biarritz will hold the World Surfing Games in 2017. Veteran surfers will know all about the city’s surf heritage, and will make a bee-line for La Côte des Basques, but there are other waves to be caught along this six-kilometre coast.

Newcomers won’t have to search hard for surf schools (there are five!), or places where you can rent and buy gear.

For beginners committed to becoming the best surfers they can be, there are also surf camps.

On these, equipment, transfers, accommodation and tuition from certified pros, are all provided for as long as a week.

So there’s no excuse not to be able to at least keep your balance for a few seconds once you’re finished.

Anglet

On the other side of Pointe Saint-Martin are the epic beaches of Anglet.

The Côte d’Argent begins here and continues right the way up to the Gironde Estuary north of Bordeaux.

Next to Biarritz’s Lighthouse, Chambre d’Amour has dreamy views of the headland from its panoramic boardwalk.

Plage des Corsairs is also prime surfing territory, offering similar waves to La Côte des Basques but with a gigantic sweep of golden sand to go with it.

Many of France’s next big surf talents learn their craft at this beach.

On terra firma it’s a fun place to fly kites with kids, or go for an invigorating jog next to the ocean.

Biarritz Is Having a Moment in the Sun

By Monica Mendal

Biarritz Is Set to Be This Summers Buzziest Resort Town

Every summer, stylish crowds congregate along France’s southeastern shores seduced by the glamorous promise of the French Riviera , spending their days sipping overpriced cocktails at the high-end resorts that line its sandy beaches as if plucked straight from a Slim Aarons photo. Historically, Biarritz—a small seaside hamlet on France’s southwestern coast—has closely competed with its eastern neighbors on the Med. Both stretches of coastline were holiday hotspots for royals in the mid-19th century, and again for France’s high society in the years following the Second World War. While the royal influence of Biarritz has since dissolved, due in large part to the wild and more unpredictable nature of the Atlantic (thus making it harder to develop), the allure of Biarritz’s prime positioning within the Basque Country never dimmed. What Biarritz lacks in glitz, it makes up for in soul.

Biarritz Is Set to Be This Summers Buzziest Resort Town

From the picturesque beaches that have earned it the title of Europe’s surf capital, to its majestic landscapes articulated through the Pyrenees mountains and the rolling hills of Basque Country, to its proximity to cultural hubs like Bordeaux and Madrid, Biarritz has remained something of a well-kept secret. While Basque Country day-trippers, in-the-know surfers, and French locals have been visiting for years, Biarritz is having a moment right now: what with the likes of experienced French chefs, a leading hospitality group, and a renowned gallerist all making their mark on the unassuming seaside town in this small corner of France’s southwest.

Below, a guide to Biarritz—and why it’s set to be this summer’s buzziest European beach destination.

Where to Stay

The former summer home of Napoleon III and Empress Eugenie reopened in 1893 as the now iconic  Hotel du Palais Biarritz ; soon becoming a bolt-hole for famous guests like Frank Sinatra and Coco Chanel, it remains the jewel of France’s southwest to this day. Still, the past five years have seen a string of new-agey boutique hotels populating the seaside town’s western shores, signaling a new awakening for an oft-overlooked slice of France’s coastline.

In 2020, French hospitality brand Experimental Group began planting roots in the sunny coastal city when it took over two historic buildings and transformed them into contemporary boutique hotels. The first was the legendary Le Régina Hotel & Spa, now re-named  Regina Experimental Biarritz , situated in a Belle Époque building overlooking the bay of Biarritz, which will open in June. With the help of French designer Dorothée Meilichzon, the property will re-open as a trendy 72-room boutique hotel, restaurant, and spa. Regina sits beside Experimental’s other property  Le Garage , a 27-room boutique hotel situated in a former classic car garage that opened in 2021.

Also among the crop of boutique hotels making their mark is the newly refurbished  Hotel de la Plage , which opened last year overlooking the famous Port Vieux beach with 20 rooms and a panoramic rooftop for breakfast and afternoon cocktails. For a more bucolic stay, there’s Villa Magnan , where the owners have transformed an abandoned villa formerly belonging to the Spanish Royal family into a family-style guesthouse with six artfully-designed suites, a dreamy gourmet kitchen, and various indoor and outdoor living spaces where guests can feel at home. Similarly,  Casaviel forms an authentic Basque farmhouse bed & breakfast situated in a 17th-century home on one of Biarritz’s oldest farms, located just a 10-minute walk from the beach.

Where to Eat

The Basque Country has long been known for its distinct culinary offerings: from fire-grilled meat and fish plates, to hot stews and signature Basque pastries. And now, with a myriad of buzzy new restaurants helmed by some of France’s top chefs and curious creatives from around the world eager to experiment with the territory’s rich ingredients, Biarritz is becoming an epicure’s paradise in its own right. If you’re just passing through, pick up a box of Basque macarons (a heartier cousin to Parisian macarons) from the famed  Maison Adam  to take home with you before hitting  Les Halles  food market, where you can sample Basque cuisine via the various local fruit, vegetable, cheese, and meat vendors. If you’re looking for a traditional Basque bistro, on the other hand, head to the beloved  Le Bar Jean for tapas, paellas, and meat dishes.

Pastries at Hungry Belly.

Pastries at Hungry Belly.

In the mornings,  Hungry Belly  will lure you in with its pastel-hued terrazzo tables and counters lined with powder pink stools and vintage plates topped with a tempting assortment of cookies, lemon and poppyseed cakes, and pistachio flan. This summer, they will also unveil a selection of homemade ice creams with at least one vegan option a day. For a quick lunch or casual dinner with friends,  Club Sandwich opened just last year, serving sandwiches with locally-sourced ingredients paired with natural wines and hot beverages. With a strong focus on music, vinyl records spin daily while a rotation of chefs from all over France are invited to take over the kitchen.

A popular dinner outpost since 2016,  Carøe is owned by a Danish husband-wife duo who sought to create a cross between a restaurant and a tapas bar, serving seasonal products paired with natural wine and good music. Primarily offering up fish dishes from small boats around the harbor of Saint Jean de Luz and shellfish from the Atlantic up to Brittany, as well as one meat plate and many vegetables, all dishes are meant to be shared. While the menu changes daily, some staples are available all season, like the clams with white miso sabayon, kimchi pancakes with black garlic mayo, and burnt leeks with anchovy sauce.

The dining area at Carøe.

New to the scene is Villa Magnan’s restaurant,  De Puta Madre , tucked in the shady garden behind the property where meals are enjoyed under the property’s old oak trees, with meals featuring ingredients from the local farm nearby. A single menu is offered for dinner at 85 euros per person and an à la carte sharing menu is available for lunch.  Chéri Bibi also opened last year under new ownership, transforming the former fish shop into a casual restaurant focused on local, organic, and seasonal ingredients with a daily-changing dinner menu centered around sustainability, featuring 60 to 70 percent vegetable-forward items, as well as high quality and sustainably-sourced fish and meat. While there’s no physical wine menu, guests can access the wine cellar to hand-select their own bottle of natural wine to pair with their meal.

Chef and owner Anthony Orjollet of Eléments opened  EPOQ , a restaurant with an open kitchen, wine bar, and wine shop in the center of Biarritz in 2019. Serving local and sustainable cuisine– 80 percent of which is cooked on an open fire—Orjollet places a particular focus on biodynamic and natural wines. Working closely with wild foragers and botanists, as well as independent fishermen and local cheesemakers, 98 percent of their offering is local and organic.

Mathieu Rostaing-Tayard, former chef of the renowned Café Sillon in Lyon opened  Sillon in Biarritz last year, forming both a restaurant and a comptoir. In the restaurant, which is somehow both sleek and cozy, with its lime-wash walls and wood floors, guests can choose between an à la carte menu meant to be shared or a tasting menu ranging from five to seven courses. The comptoir is more casual, with a large wooden bar, copper lights, and a semi-open kitchen, serving sharing plates from local ham to smoked fish and stuffed shellfish. Finally, end your night at the newly opened  Centro Biarritz for ceviche and oysters, innovative cocktails, and a trendy music scene, or at the beloved wine bar  Retour Verre Le Futur .

Travelers have long descended on Biarritz not only for its gastronomic excellence, but also for its unwavering promise of surf and sun. The scenic seaside town was once a hub for members of France’s high society who preferred something more laid back than the glitzy Cote D’Azur in the east, and a casual atmosphere still persists here, thanks in part to the surf culture that has propagated over the years. It’s no secret that Biarritz is a surfer’s paradise, often being dubbed “little California'” for its breathtaking beaches like Le Grande Plage, Plage Côte des Basques, and Plage Marbella. (Those seeking calmer waters can swim in smaller bays like Plage du Miramar, Plage Port Vieux, and Plage La Milady.)

Biarritz Is Set to Be This Summers Buzziest Resort Town

Until now, the global art scene hadn’t quite made its way to the unpretentious seaside town, but Biarritz is conveniently flanked by major art hubs with Paris, Madrid, and Bilbao all within a short driving distance. As of late, however, Biarritz is beginning to form its own contemporary art identity with the inception of Lucy Chadwick’s contemporary gallery  Champ Lacombe , which the British gallerist opened in 2021. As the first contemporary art space in Biarritz, which has featured exhibitions by artists like Gaetano Pesce and Tim Breuer, Chadwick’s presence has led to many in the art and fashion worlds making a beeline for the city over the past few years.

An exhibit by artist Tim Breuer at Galerie Champ Lacombe.

This summer, Champ Lacombe will host an immersive group exhibition co-curated by Taylor Trabulus: titled “Baroque,” it features over 20 international artists across multiple mediums and will span both the gallery and Biarritz and Chadwick’s new outdoor location in Les Landes. “[While] there is an abundance of cultural festivals that take place in and around Biarritz annually, there have not been many new physical spaces that have opened in Biarritz itself as the contemporary art scene is particularly new,” Chadwick explains.

More recently, there have been a series of projects and residencies taking place at Villa Magnan, as well as at  Sunburn Store . Chadwick continues: “The closest active contemporary art scenes are in Bordeaux, where the CAPC Museum has a brilliant program led by Cedric Fauq, and then across the border in Spain in San Sebastián and Bilbao.” Looks like it won’t be long before Biarritz has its moment in the creative spotlight.

A local’s guide to Biarritz, France: five great things to do

Artist Isabelle de Joantho delights in the Atlantic city’s crashing waves, pinxtos, galleries and green spaces

Isabelle de Joantho is a painter and sculptor who studied at the Bayonne-Anglet-Biarritz School of Art.

La Goulue restaurant (named after a can-can dancer at the Moulin Rouge who used to gulp down her clients’ drinks) serves great, local fare in a Basque-red 1900s dining room. I love the chipirons grillés a la plancha (squid grilled with garlic and parsley) and Spanish-style sea bream. For fresh food, Les Halles covered market is filled with tasting bars, organic bakeries, cheese and charcuterie stalls and fishmongers. Two other places not to miss are Place Bellevue on the seafront for one of Maison Pariès ’ caramel fondant kanougas , flavoured with vanilla or Espelette chilli pepper. And in Bidart, a town a little way down the coast, it’s worth watching a gâteau basque (a cake with a creamy filling and orange zest) being made in front of you at the Moulin de Bassilour watermill.

Inspiration

Église de Sainte-Eugénie

Overlooking the old fishing port is the impressive, greystone neo-Gothic Église de Sainte-Eugénie – patron saint of Napoleon III’s wife, Eugénie de Montijo, who fashioned Biarritz as a spectacular health and holiday resort in the mid-19th century. My inspirational place lies beneath: the huge, vaulted crypt, which is used as a venue for art shows. I have exhibited there many times and it has an amazing ambiance. Biarritz is now a major hub for galleries and contemporary art, and I always attend La Brouillarta , an annual outdoor art fair on the seafront. There’s also a parcours d’oeuvres d’art, a walking route around the city’s many frescoes and outdoor sculptures.

Green space

Biarritz’s assets include the sea, the mountains, the countryside and the Spanish border, but we have three golden retrievers, so green spaces are very important to us. There are two wonderful lakes just outside the city, Lac Mouriscot and Lac Marion . Mouriscot is popular with joggers and cyclists: it has wide, wild pathways through the woods and plenty of benches overlooking the lake. Marion, which is equally good for dogs and families, has a bucolic lakeside path, some areas of marshland, plus lots of mature trees and lawns. Both can be reached on bus route 5 from the centre of town, heading past Biarritz’s horse racing track .

Neighbourhood

La Grande Plage.

Biarritz’s Grande Plage and casino seafront can become very crowded in the summer, so it is best to visit out of season, but the Port des Pêcheurs to the south is always wonderful. Set on a natural creek, the protected harbour has a “village” of 65 cabins known as crampottes – whitewashed fishing huts built into the rock, with red, blue or bright green shutters. They have hardly changed in 150 years, though a few have been turned into cafes and restaurants. There is a 19-year waiting list to rent one – you have to own a boat and a mooring in the fishing port. The port sits beneath the old whale-watching tower and is the most authentic and charming stretch of the Biarritz seafront. It has a little beach, and lanes draped with floats, fishing nets and the occasional giant anchor.

Locals Guide to Biarritz Illustrations by Hennie Haworth strawberry on page

Le Bar Jean , at the heart of Biarritz’s tapas, paella and beef-eating culture since the 1930s, stays open until well after midnight, as do many of the pintxos (tapas) bars around Les Halles market. It’s popular to go from bar to bar in Biarritz, tasting tapas with Basque cider, which is poured into tiny, round glasses from high above the table so the cider becomes aerated, though it is quite sour and vinegary! Or, if you are at the beach along the city’s Côte des Basques, it’s only 100 steps up to Bar Etxola Bibi, a great place to watch the sunset with a cocktail and plate of pintxos.

Close to the beaches and Les Halles, Villa Koegui (doubles from €85, breakfast €15pp) was renovated this year. It has a stylish lounge, an outdoor terrace and family suites.

10 Top Things to Do and See in Biarritz

Surfing lesson at Cote des basques beach

Very popular among French people, Biarritz’s easy-going way of life, the plethora of activities available in the city, and its surroundings and magnificent sites attract more and more tourists from all over the world. If you’re already planning your trip over there, here are the top ten reasons why you should head to the Bay of Biscay this summer.

Find your style in the ocean.

If you’re coming to Biarritz, you will probably swim at la Grande Plage or in some of the less crowded beaches of the area, but the city has more to offer. Taking a surfing lesson is a must-do for many tourists but if not, you can try bodyboard or stand-up paddle instead.

Run on the Beach

Pamper yourself at the spa.

Spending the day at the beach and partying all night long can be exhausting at times. Take a break from all this and indulge in some of the region’s specialties. Try a seawater treatment and come out rejuvenated.

Wander Around in Les Halles

This is the perfect place in the heart of the city to walk around, grab something to eat, and meet the locals. If you are an early bird and feel like cooking with local products during your holiday, you should definitively go to its market, open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Become a Festayre

Anyone who has spent a night out partying can be considered as a festayre . But if you really want to blend in the region’s partying culture, join as many local ferias as possible, dress up in white and red (the region’s official colors), sing along with the locals, and engage in some serious partying! Incredible memories and partial amnesia guaranteed.

Feria time

Visit Le Rocher de la Vierge (the Virgin’s Rock)

It is a must while you’re staying in Biarritz. You will for sure enjoy the walk to this rock formation in the Bay of Biscay, considered by many as a touristic curiosity. Offering an amazing view over the mountain and the ocean, it will take your breath away.

Plan an Excursion to San Sebastian

if you are staying longer than a weekend, you should definitively plan a day trip to San Sebastian. Another culinary haven of the region, you might want to try some pintxos and enjoy some of the other local food. If you are into cultural tourism, you will be pleased with the numerous museums and exhibitions in Donostia/San Sebastian that was elected in 2016 “Europe’s capital of Culture.”

Get Married on the Beach

If you’re a nature lover and are looking for a romantic original for your special day, Biarritz is the place to say “I do.” There are several agencies that will help you plan a memorable ceremony and answer to your needs for your special day. Florina from the Vahine Ori Tahiti will be more than happy to make all the arrangements for you!

Beach wedding

Attend a Rugby Match

It might be possible if you come during the summer (rugby players go on vacation too) but if you stop by some other time during the year, going to a rugby match is something to do. Depending on who you’re talking to, you will be told to support the “B.O” (for Biarritz Olympique Pays Basque Rugby), the city’s rugby club or “l’Aviron” (for Aviron Bayonnais), the other big club of the region located in Bayonne and historical rival (some will say enemy) of the “B.O.”

Wear Espadrilles

Some locals might roll their eyes when they will see you wearing espadrilles but you’re a tourist, so you’re supposed to do “touristy” things aren’t you? Originally worn by locals as an all-around shoe, it has become a highly fashionable accessory around the world. If you feel like going a little further and wearing a Basque beret, don’t.

biarritz travel and leisure

Biarritz is a beautiful seaside town in the French Basque Country on the southern Atlantic coast, close to the border with Spain, making it a great place to spend one day in Biarritz as a day trip from other points in the region. Due to its location, any Biarritz itinerary is incomplete without a trip to the beach and an excellent dining experience, but if you have even more time, you can try surfing or other adventurous activities in the area.

Table of Contents

How Many Days in Biarritz?

Biarritz is not a big city, but there are plenty of activities to fill a day trip if you’re not looking to get so active or don’t have so much time to spend in the city. However, if you’re a surfing fanatic or are wondering where to spend your summer holiday, how many days to spend in Biarritz is a valid question.

In one day in Biarritz, you can see a few of the city’s excellent museums, as well as enjoy the scenic coastline and delicious cuisine, so a Biarritz day trip from nearby Bilbao , San Sebastian or Bayonne is a great idea.

However, to spend a relaxed time on the beaches and get to know more about the city from its historic museum and huge aquarium, you do need to spend more than a day.

If you can spare a few days in Biarritz, it’s a popular place to go surfing, rafting in La Nive River and mountain biking, and you can even take boat trips out to try to spot the dolphins.

City of Biarritz

Getting To & Around Biarritz

Biarritz Airport is just a 10-minute drive from the city centre or 30 to 40 minutes with public transport, so if you’re flying into the region, you can easily rent a car at the airport and spend a few days in the Basque Country, including a day trip to Biarritz.

Although if you’re starting your Basque road trip in Bilbao, you can also easily rent a car ( browse Rentalcars.com for options) from Bilbao airport and drive for 1 hour 45 minutes to Biarritz, or take a bus for 2 hours 30 minutes up to 4 hours. You can view bus schedules here.

To break up your journey while you get to Biarritz, however, you can also spend a day in San Sebastian – famous for having an inordinate number of Michelin-starred restaurants for such a small town – which is 1 hour and 10 minutes driving from Bilbao, and 50 minutes from Biarritz.

It’s then just another 20 minutes to the small but picturesque town of Bayonne on the Ardour River to complete a beautiful Basque road trip over 4 to 5 days.

You can also choose to take an organised tour from Spain such as this full-day tour or this private tour.

Within Biarritz, if you don’t have a rental car or simply prefer to find a free car park and leave your car there during the day, there is a good public transport system, although it’s not entirely necessary for short stays exploring the city.

There are some free shuttle buses going through the city, usually to more touristic zones such as through the centre, to and from the beach, but there is also a park-and-ride system with 22 car parks around the region, as well as buses and a trambus for a greener alternative. You can use these buses to navigate most of the French Baque region, including trips to Bayonne.

If you like to stay active and make your journeys between stops quicker, you can also rent bikes in the city for very reasonable prices for a day.

The streets are well looked after and the city itself is relatively flat so you don’t have to put too much effort in, and there’s even a 1,200 km cycle route from Hendaye on the French-Spanish border to Roscoff in Brittany all the way along the Atlantic coast, so cycling around this area is a great experience.

Biarritz Lighthouse

1 Day in Biarritz Itinerary

Starting in the north of the city, either arriving by bus, car or on foot, our itinerary will take you on a cultural journey into the city, with opportunities to unwind as well as learn about the region and, of course, enjoy the freshest seafood.

You can choose to take a walking tour to learn more about the city from a guide.

Phare de Biarritz

On the north coast of Biarritz, you start your day in the city at the brilliant white Biarritz lighthouse. Built in 1834, this 73-metre-high building stands on a rocky formation reaching out into the Atlantic Ocean and looks stunning with the white outer wall contrasting with the deep blue sea and dark greenery on the land.

Only opening in summer, you can go up the lighthouse from 10 am to 7 pm each day in July and August, although the lighthouse does close in extremely bad weather. Once you’ve walked up the 248 steps inside, you’re rewarded with mesmerising views of Biarritz, and on a clear day, you can even see across to Spain.

This a great place to start your Biarritz itinerary as you can glance over the whole city to see where you’re headed to next and what landmarks stand out in the landscape.

Head down along Miramar Beach, one of the longest in Biarritz in the Grande Plage neighbourhood, and stop for a spot of sunbathing (one of the best things to do in Biarritz), or continue until you see some beautiful domed roofs behind the iconic seafront building, the Hôtel du Palais.

This hotel is home to the Villa Eugenie and was commissioned by Napoleon III and was constructed in 1854.

Miramar Beach

Église Orthodoxe de Biarritz

Just off the beach, before you arrive at the Plage de Biarritz, is the stunning Orthodox Cathedral of Biarritz, complete with a huge domed roof topped with golden orthodox crosses.

This cathedral was built in Biarritz in the late 1800s by Russian aristocrats, after the construction of the Russian Orthodox Cathedrals of Nice , Paris and Pau in the 1860s, and you can see the Russian influence in the architectural style of the cathedral as well as the golden ornaments that adorn the cathedral’s exterior and interior that were brought directly from St Petersburg.

The cathedral was restored in the 1980s thanks to many donations, including by famed Soviet dissident, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, and you can visit the cathedral for free to witness the incredible paintings and wood carvings inside.

Biarritz is a seaside city, but as with most religious buildings, you’ll need to dress appropriately to be allowed in, so make sure you have a shawl to cover your shoulders and knee-length skirts or shorts before you go in.

Just across the road, you can also stop by the intriguing Imperial Chapel. This chapel was built 30 years before the Russian Orthodox Cathedral of Biarritz and showcases the Spanish-Moorish design style that southeastern cities of Spain like Seville and Granada are known for, with its colourful tiles and stained glass windows.

Continue along the coastal road to reach Biarritz’s old port.

Orthodox Church in Biarritz

The old port of Biarritz is a must-see destination within the city, so if you’re on a Biarritz day trip from a nearby city and don’t have a complete day to fill with activities, you should head straight here for a short walk and a great lunch.

This is one of the most picturesque parts of Biarritz, so you can slowly amble through the city streets and along the northern shore for scenic views of the aquamarine waters, quaint harbour and fishing port, with the striking dark grey backdrop of the neo-Gothic Sainte-Eugénie Church.

You can walk all the way out to the rocky point of Gamaritz, where you can look out over the Atlantic or back over the city of Biarritz, and take the small bridge over the rocks to the Rocher de la Vierge, the more popular overlook with a statue of the Virgin Mary.

The area’s landscape means it’s a perfect location for a seafood lunch, with fishermen bringing fresh produce to the locals daily from the port and incredible views over the ocean while you dine.

Try Casa Juan Pedro or slightly more upmarket Chez Albert for great fish and white wine, or head further inland to Bistrot Etxeko for a meatier Basque menu.

If you have more than one day or are planning a weekend in Biarritz, you can spend some time visiting Biarritz’s famous aquarium, although the oceanographic site is so large you’ll need plenty of time there to make the most of your visit.

What’s more, you can come back to this area towards the evening to have some fun in the casino! This large beachfront building has poker tables as well as a delightful bar and live music and entertainment in the evenings, making for a great night out.

Bridge to Rocher de la Vierge

Musée Historique de Biarritz

The Biarritz History Museum welcomes you to learn about the history of the Basque city from its origins to the present day.

Created in the 1980s in a converted Anglican church, the Biarritz History Museum has been collecting artefacts and documents detailing the history of the former whaling town to its current status as a famous French surfing city.

You can learn all about the conflicts with the British and Bayonne, as well as the Basque influence on the city by admiring the over 5,000 objects in the museum, which underwent reconstruction in 2019 to further educate and entice its visitors.

You can enjoy a couple of hours in the museum, and take an audio guide to learn more about the city.

Musée Asiatica

Continuing on through the Pierre Forsans Public Garden in front of the Central Train Station of Biarritz, you’ll arrive at the city’s other fascinating museum – the Asian Art Museum.

With a collection on par with that of the British Museum in London, or the Musée Guimet in Paris, Biarritz’s Asian Art Museum is one of the finest in Europe, drawing visitors from all over the continent to admire the centuries-old paintings, sculptures and jewellery from South and East Asia.

Predominantly coming from India, Tibet and China, the works of art in the museum consist of jade, porcelain, bronze and ivory, showing the intricate detail developed over the centuries through Asian artwork.

You can easily spend hours reading about each of the different pieces, their origin and purpose, and still need to come back, so it’s a great final stop on your Biarritz itinerary so you don’t spend your whole day trip to Biarritz inside the museum!

Those who would rather enjoy more beaches during their time in Biarritz rather than visit a museum can round out their day on the Plage De la Cote des Basques, another gorgeous and popular surf beach located just south of the Vieux Port.

Have 2 or 3 Days in Biarritz?

Biarritz has grown as a surfing destination since the 1950s when Peter Viertel rode the first wave in the city – allegedly the first time surfing was practised in Europe – and you can now find 18 surf schools along the beach as well as plenty of board rentals and surf shops including Billabong and Quiksilver.

If you’re a surfer or want to learn, you can spend at least 2 days in Biarritz to have a few hours of lessons each day or just enjoy your time out on the waves.

If you’re lucky enough to spend 3 days or more, you can also take a trip out to La Nive River where you can go mountain biking in the surrounding forests or try a more exhilarating adventure rafting down the river!

For culture and food fans, rather than trying your hand at water sports, you can take a 20-minute bus ride or car journey to the nearby historic town of Bayonne on the Ardour River to explore the mediaeval old town and delight your senses with exceptional tapas in the beautiful riverside restaurant Une Bouteille à la Nive. Or, if you prefer, sample the local ciders and traditional dishes at the Cidrerie Ttipia.

Of course, if you want to continue your journey into France, you can also visit nearby Bordeaux , which is located just north of the French Basque region.

Sports, Leisure & Activities Biarritz

Biarritz is an incredible playground. Nestling between the ocean and the mountains, it is the ideal place for activities of all kinds. Sporting, of course - the town's beaches and waves make it a great place to try out surfing - but also cultural, with a strong Basque heritage.

Biarritz activities: surfing and more

Biarritz offers a wide range of sporting activities. As well as the inevitable introduction to surfing, which you certainly won't want to miss, thanks to the many surf clubs on the beaches, there are plenty of other activities to discover in Biarritz. The Nive, a tributary of the Adour, the river that flows into the Atlantic, offers many possibilities. Rafting and hydrospeed are just some of the freshwater activities on offer. For climbing enthusiasts, you can also take advantage of the region's rugged terrain and discover the via ferrata of the Baztan rocks, all just a 45-minute drive from our centre.

Biarritz activities: an important cultural heritage

But Biarritz isn't just a city of sport, it's also a city with a strong and enduring heritage. A heritage that can be felt on the plate, with famous local dishes that have crossed time and borders, such as poulet basquaise and piperade. This heritage can be seen at first glance on the facades of the town's houses. Magnificent houses with exposed woodwork, sometimes red, sometimes green, sometimes blue. Each colour has its own history and meaning. These different shades give the town its charm. Finally, if you're looking for more traditional activities in Biarritz, you can visit the Biarritz lighthouse or the Rocher de la Vierge.

The Best Places to Stay in Biarritz

Biarritz was once renowned as the Monte Carlo of the Atlantic Coast. Royalty and the rich and famous summered here from the time Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie made Biarritz their summer hideaway up until WWII. These days the old world glamor hangs on with the former summer residence of Empress Eugénie an elegant luxury hotel. But the surfer vibe that caught on when American screen writer Peter Viertel caught a wave in 1957 mixes the luxe with laid back shabby chic, and these days Biarritz attracts all kinds. There’s a little something for everyone from some of the best golf courses to some of the best surfing swells in Europe.

The Perfect 3-Day Weekend in Biarritz

Aerial shot of Hotel de Palais and new pool with garden

Hotel de Palais

Hôtel du Palais

Once the summer residence of Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie, the beach-front palace became the 5-star luxury Hôtel du Palais in 1893. It dominates the seaside with its perch on the Grand Plage and offers an old-world elegance that will make you feel like you’re Empress Eugénie herself.

It’s just a 10-minute stroll to Biarritz center, but the distance is far enough to put you away from the summer crowds. It’s one of the only Biarritz hotels on the beach, which is quite literally located in front of the hotel. Hotel du Palais feels like its own little oasis in one of the most popular beach towns on France’s Atlantic Coast.

Many of the hotel’s rooms offer sea and pool views. The decor keeps with the Belle Époque style of the hotel with plush carpets and fabrics, artwork in gilded frames, and carefully chosen furniture while still managing to be light and welcoming. There’s also modern amenities like air conditioning and flat screen tvs.

Hôtel du Palais, also known as the Grand Hotel Biarritz, recently underwent a huge renovation and the outdoor areas are all new with a California-style outdoor swimming pool and pool bar, a solarium, and gardens. There’s also a second indoor swimming pool in the Guerlain spa annex. The spa, which can be booked whether you’re a guest of the hotel or not, is a must for a bit of relaxation during your trip to Biarritz.

There’s also two on-site restaurants open year-round and a third beachfront restaurant open in the summer months.

Hôtel du Palais includes complimentary wifi. The hotel has free parking available onsite for guests. Pets welcome for a fee.

View of the garden from a balcony room at Hotel de Silhouette

Hotel de Silhouette

Hotel de Silhouette is a charming family-run 4-star boutique hotel with just 20 rooms in the heart of Biarritz center just steps away from Les Halles covered market. It’s housed in one of the oldest buildings in Biarritz, but has had extensive renovations to give this hidden gem of a hotel a contemporary feel.

Each room has its own unique touches and several have balconies overlooking Hotel de Silhouette’s lovely garden. The rooms are also soundproofed, which is a nice touch since the bars and restaurants can get a bit rowdy in Biarritz center.

The hotel has a beautiful and spacious garden for guests to enjoy, which is like a little hideaway in the heart of Biarritz’s busiest district. Artists, both up and coming as well as established, exhibit their works throughout the hotel and in the garden making it a lovely spot to pop in to for a drink whether or not you’re a guest.

Hotel de Silhouette includes complimentary wifi. The hotel has parking available onsite for a fee of € 15 per day. Pets are not allowed.

Mercure Biarritz Centre Plaza

The 4-star Mercure Biarritz Centre Plaza sits just steps away from the Casino and the art deco building overlooks the Grand Plage. The location is excellent and just a short walk from both the beaches and the Quartier des Halles. It’s conveniently located to all of Biarritz’s attractions.

The hotel was entirely renovated in 2017 and the rooms are comfortable with air conditioning and modern amenities. The decor pays homage to the art deco building, which is a recognized historical monument for its architecture by Monuments de France. You’ll find restored antique furniture throughout the hotel, including in the guest rooms.

Mercure Biarritz Centre Plaza includes complimentary wifi. Private parking is available nearby the hotel for a fee of € 20 per day. Pets welcome for a fee.

The loft bedroom of the duplex rooms at Escale Oceania Biarritz

The duplex rooms give you a little extra space or are perfect for a family

Escale Oceania Biarritz

Escale Oceania Biarritz is located just a 5-minute walk from Hotel du Palais and the Grand Plage. The 3-star hotel is on a quiet street and the location is good for exploring Biarritz.

The hotel was last refurbished in 2012 and the room decor is a bit basic. It could use a fresh update, but the value for the location is excellent. The duplex rooms are spacious with a seating area and bathroom on the first level and the bedroom in a loft with one queen bed and an additional single bed. The duplex is also ideal for a small family since the sofa in the sitting room also opens in to a sofa bed.

The staff at Escale Oceania Biarritz are incredibly friendly and accommodating. We personally experienced this and a number of TripAdvisor reviews mention how various members of the staff went above and beyond.

Escale Oceania Biarritz includes complimentary wifi. Secure parking in the hotel garage is available for a fee of € 15 per day. Pets welcome for a fee.

The Best Places to Stay in Saint-Jean-de-Luz

Saint-Jean-de-Luz is a tiny fishing town just 18 kilometers south of Biarritz, and is famous as the place where one of the most important political marriages in history took place. The beach is sheltered from the more wild swells of Biarritz and the Bay of Biscay thanks to a break wall that Napoleon III ordered after his boat nearly sank, which makes the town a family favorite for beach getaways. There’s also fabulous foodie and shopping scenes here. Not to mention that the town couldn’t be more quaint with it’s traditional red and white Basque buildings dotting the bay.

The park and main Basque villa with the ocean beyond at Hôtel la Réserve

Hôtel la Réserve is set on a stunning park overlooking the ocean

Hôtel La Réserve

Located just a short walk from the center of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Hôtel La Réserve sits on a cliff just above the Atlantic Ocean. It’s a 4-star hotel set in a Basque villa with lush gardens and a gorgeous infinity pool perfect for lounging around when the summer heat wave hits. It feels like a wonderfully private retreat away from the bustling center of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, but is easily connected via a 10-minute walk along a paved coastal pathway for easy access to the protected beach, shops and restaurants of the town.

The hotel itself has 41 rooms and suites inside the main building, plus residences that are like apartments with kitchens for guests that want to stay a bit longer than just a few days. All of the rooms and suites in the hotel and the apartments in the residence are decorated in the Basque style and each has its own unique touches. The residence had newly been renovated and there are apartments from studios to 3-bedroom apartments.

There’s three hectares of park with a British-style lawn, tennis courts, ping pong and a heated double infinity pool. The hotel also has an onsite spa with treatments exclusively designed in the Basque spirit. There’s also beach access from the hotel.

The gourmet onsite restaurant shouldn’t be missed with the chef’s innovative spin on traditional Basque cuisine.

Hôtel La Réserve includes complimentary wifi. The hotel has free parking available onsite for guests. Pets are not allowed.

The Best Places to Stay in Pays Basque

Head in to the interior for tiny villages that the famous wild Pottok ponies wander through. Here it’s beautiful rolling green hills of the pre-Pyrenees dotted with farms. Only 30 minutes drive to the beach towns like Biarritz and Saint-Jean-de-Luz, the interior is a much quieter retreat away from the buzzing beaches.

Exterior of historic l'Auberge Basque with green shutters and trim

l’Auberge Basque is set in a traditional Basque house

l’Auberge Basque , Saint-Pee-sur-Nivelle

Situated just 7 kilometers from Saint-Jean-de-Luz, the family-run l’Auberge Basque is a boutique hotel set in a nearly 350-year old traditional Basque house. The house is set on a beautiful hillside with a beautiful view of the Rhune Mountain. It’s also a fabulous Michelin-star restaurant, which shouldn’t be missed when visiting Pays Basque.

The house might be historic, but the rooms have all been modernized in design and decor. Each room is unique and some have balconies or terraces with the view of Rhune Mountain. The 2-bedroom apartment is perfect for families. There’s air conditioning for hot summer days and a lovely outdoor terrace to lounge on. Even breakfast is personalized for each guest.

l’Auberge Basque includes complimentary wifi. The hotel has free private parking onsite for guests. Pets are welcome for a fee.

Even on a rainy evening in the Pays Basque, Sare is cute and charming

Hotel Arraya , Sare

Hotel Arraya sits on the main square in the charming Basque village, Sare. It’s close to La Rhune and a short drive from Espelette. Both Saint-Jean-de-Luz and Biarritz are only about a 30-minute drive.

It was once a traveler’s hostel on the Saint James Way and the three connected Basque houses were converted in to a boutique hotel in 1951. It’s been run by three generations of the same family since. There’s also a  beautiful secret garden for guests.

The hotel has two junior suites called the prestige rooms, which we stayed in. The prestige rooms are spacious rooms and perfect for a family since there’s a small second bedroom located just off of the main bedroom. These rooms also have private balconies overlooking the secret garden, where we spotted two Pottok ponies in the pasture behind the hotel. Each room is uniquely decorated.

There’s also an onsite restaurant that has a reputation for being one of the best restaurants in the Pays Basque interior.

Hotel Arraya includes complimentary wifi. The hotel has free private parking nearby for guests. Pets are not allowed.

Biarritz looks stunning and Hotel de Palais looks like my kind of place! I’ve been to Spain’s Basque and loved it. I’ve often wondered what Pays Basque had to offer. The scenery looks amazing and the history would be fascinating.

August 5, 2018 at 10:12 PM

We were sorry we missed Biarritz when we were in Basque country. You have provided a good selection of places to stay. Certainly looks like Monte Carlo on the north shore. We would definitely choose one of the spots with a beach. And splurge a little. So the Hotel du Palais might be our choice for a pampering weekend. Although Hotel la Reserve has the most amazing view.

I haven’t been to the Pays Basque yet – I used to live in Spain so know it better as el pais Vasco! Biarritz sounds like a fabulous place to visit, but the rest of the countryside would be my preferred option I think, l’Auberge Basque, looks amazing!

I love the sound of “laid back shabby chic”. But seems like most of these places would still be way over my budget. How do the locals feel about campers on the beach?

August 8, 2018 at 11:53 AM

Wild camping is illegal in France and most of Europe, actually. But there are some official camping sites on the coast between Biarritz and Saint-Jean-de-Luz. You definitely can’t just come pitch a tent on the beach though.

Hotel de Palais looks like a dream, but I would settle for Escale Oceania Biarritz. I usually never spend all that much time in hotel room anyways so its basic accommodation is just fine by me.

August 8, 2018 at 11:52 AM

For us, it depends on the destination. There’s so much to see and do in Biarritz that we didn’t spend a ton of time in the hotel room. But Hotel du Palais is truly gorgeous and the spa treatments we had there were perfect after having some surfing lessons.

I have never heard of Biarritz but the coast looks gorgeous. Also, Pays Basque is a place I’m hearing for the first time about so I believe my geography really sucks! Hotel du Palais looks like a real palace and I imagine the views from the rooms must be to die for. So happy to read about a place I have never even heard about before.

August 8, 2018 at 11:48 AM

Biarritz and Pays Basque isn’t so well known to people outside of France and Spain, so your geography doesn’t suck.

August 9, 2018 at 7:30 AM

I actually have no idea where Biarritz and Pays Basque are but from the looks of the hotels and accommodations you mentioned here, it looks like a wonderful place to explore. My fave would be the Hotel de Palais.

This elegant resort destination offers a blend of natural beauty with its rugged coastline and cultural sophistication. Ideal for adventurers and leisure seekers alike, Biarritz promises an unforgettable experience with its unique combination of surf culture and underground explorations.

Ride the waves at Grande Plage

Grande Plage is the central beach of Biarritz and a surfer's paradise. With consistent waves throughout the year, it caters to both beginners and seasoned surfers. As you walk toward the lighthouse at Pointe Saint-Martin, take in the fresh ocean breeze and watch local fishermen at work, adding a tranquil moment to your adventure-filled trip.

Les Halles market buzzes with activity as locals and tourists alike shop for fresh produce, artisanal goods, and regional specialties. It's an excellent place to immerse yourself in Basque culture and perhaps pick up some picnic supplies before heading back to relax on one of Biarritz's beautiful beaches.

Miami Beach Launches 'Anti-Spring Break' Campaign, Plans to Strictly Enforce Rules and Security Checks

The city will implement curfews, security searches, and bag checks at beach access points, and will enforce early beach entrance closures.

biarritz travel and leisure

The city of Miami Beach is enforcing stricter rules when it comes to visitors heading to the popular spring break destination this year.

The city will implement curfews, security searches, and bag checks at beach access points, along with enforcing early beach entrance closures, according to a post on Miami Beach's website . In addition, there will be DUI checkpoints and road closures while police intend to crack down on drug possession and violence.

“The measures… will ensure that our residents, businesses, and visitors are safe and thrive during Spring Break,” Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner said in a recent statement . “Everyone is invited to enjoy the beauty and hospitality of our City. But we are a law and order City and we will enforce our laws all year round, including during March’s Spring Break.”

The new rules, which were announced as part of a “breaking up with spring break” campaign, also came with reminders of what is banned on the area’s beaches, including smoking cigarettes or filtered tobacco products, consuming alcohol or drugs, playing loud music, and more.

In addition to these rules, the city will also eliminate all sidewalk seating on Ocean Drive from March 8 to 10 and from March 15 to 17, enforce a flat parking rate at garages and lots of $30 for visitors on several Thursdays to Sundays in March (and close them altogether on others), and double non-resident towing rates.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis also pledged to increase law enforcement presence in “popular spring break destinations like Miami Beach , Daytona Beach, and Panama City Beach.”

“Florida may be popular for spring break, but it is inhospitable to criminal activity,” DeSantis said. “Florida does not tolerate lawlessness and chaos.”

The new rules come as Miami Beach has struggled to keep spring breakers under control following several years of spring break violence and arrests.
