A tourist board is an important type of travel and tourism organisation that makes up a key part of the structure of the travel and tourism industry . But what is a tourist board, what does this organisation do and why are tourist boards so important? Read on to learn more…
What is a tourist board?
What type of organisation is a tourist board, what does a tourist board do, national tourist boards, regional tourist boards, local tourist boards, what is a tourist board: further reading.
A tourist board is a tourist organisation that is founded with a view to promoting and creating the identity, and to enhance the reputation of tourism in a particular location. They are official organisations that encourages tourists to visit a particular city, country, or region.
A tourist board is a not for profit organisation that is usually government owned. This means that the focus is on providing a service to the general public, as opposed to making a direct profit. However, indirectly, tourist boards do help to make money for the country because their aim is to promote the tourism industry, which in turn brings in revenue. Tourist boards are publicly funded, meaning that the money needed to operate comes from money that is raised through taxation. Tourist boards operate within the public sector.
A tourist board is generally a point of information for consumers or tourists. The primary aim is to promote tourism in a particular area. They may do this through a range of marketing initiatives including targeted campaigns and advertisements. Tourist boards may run adverts on TV and place advertisements on bus shelters or on the tube, for example. Tourist boards have also been known to partner with influencers such as bloggers and Instagram influencers who will promote the destination to their followers. Sometimes these can be sizeable campaigns.
Tourist boards will also provide information about a specific area, including transportation options, popular tourist attractions , and types of accommodation available in the area. Tourist boards also provide information about the history and the culture of a specific area.
Behind the scenes, tourist boards also do a lot of work to help manage and facilitate the tourism provision in a particular area. Some of their duties may include:
- Conducting market research
- Analysis and appraisal of tourism business in the area
- Liaising with other Governmental organisations
- Managing tourist representative and the provision of tourist information
- Cooperation with tourist boards in other destinations
- Developing the tourism provision in the area
Different levels of tourists boards
There are different levels of tourist boards that focus on different levels of tourism, I will explain each of these below.
National tourist boards oversee tourism at a national level, in other words, they are responsible for tourism throughout the country, or the nation. National tourist boards typically set the agenda for tourism and support the sector to improve what is has to offer. National tourist boards provide funding and help to promote a positive image of the country. They will also work closely with other areas of Government at a national level.
Examples of national tourist boards include Visit Britain , Amazing Thailand and Incredible India .
Regional tourist boards are organisations that are in charge of promoting and managing tourism at a regional level. Regional tourist boards will often work closely with national tourist boards. Their main role is to lead the regional tourism strategies in the area. Regional tourist boards will collaborate with local authorities, tourism businesses and other organisations to undertake a range of marketing, product investment and business support activities within the travel and tourism industry.
A local tourist board is a tourist board that focusses on a specific local area. Many local tourist boards will support local tourism groups and associations that help to bring together the private and public sector. Local tourist boards will address issues at grass roots and will demonstrate a higher level of understanding of tourism in a particular area than a national or regional tourist board will. They will work closely will the local authority and local Government.
Local tourist boards will often have responsibility for tourist information centres. These are centres that provide a range of information to tourists on attractions, accommodation, hospitality options etc within the local area. There will often be trained staff who work at the tourist information centres who are able to advise and help tourists. There may also be a small gift shop onsite.

Tourism Development Authority
The Tourism Development Authority promotes travel, tourism and conventions; sponsors tourism-related events; and finances tourism-related capital projects. The authority is responsible for administering the proceeds of a 3-percent room occupancy tax. At least two-thirds of the tax’s proceeds must fund travel and tourism promotion, with the rest available for other tourism-related expenditures.

The Tourism Development Authority has added a funding mechanism for special projects and partnerships to remain responsive to opportunities to expand tourism and to partner with local nonprofit organizations to promote travel, tourism and conventions; sponsor tourism-related events; and finance tourism-related capital projects . Requests for special projects and partnerships are generally small in scope, are needed only once, and must demonstrate or explain how the project or partnership will expand tourism and increase Hillsborough lodging occupancies.
The Tourism Board has contract with the Alliance for Historic Hillsborough to operate the Hillsborough Visitors Center in the first floor of the Alexander Dickson House at 150 E. King St. The center offers a gift shop, tours, exhibits and gardens.

U.S. Travel and Tourism Advisory Board
About the ttab.
The United States Travel and Tourism Advisory Board (TTAB) serves as the advisory body to the Secretary of Commerce on matters relating to the travel and tourism industry in the United States. The Board advises the Secretary on government policies and programs that affect the U.S. travel and tourism industry, offers counsel on current and emerging issues, and provides a forum for discussing and proposing solutions to industry-related problems.
Past Boards have presented Secretaries of Commerce with advice on a wide range of policies and issues facing the travel and tourism including travel facilitation, visa policy, infrastructure, aviation security, research, energy policy, and economic sustainability, as well as, valuable advice on the National Travel and Tourism Strategy. Board recommendations will be shared on this site.
The Board is comprised of up to thirty-two members appointed by the Secretary of Commerce. Members represent companies and organizations in the travel and tourism industry from a broad range of products and services, company sizes and geographic locations. Members serve, at the pleasure of the Secretary, typically for a two-year term. The Board was originally chartered in 2003, and because of the Department’s need for the ongoing advice from industry representatives, has been re-chartered 10 times, most recently in 2023. Under the Visit America Act, the TTAB is now a congressionally-mandated federal advisory board.
Members includes representatives of state and regional economic development teams, businesses, and organizations.
The Deputy Assistant Secretary for Travel and Tourism serves as the Board’s Executive Director. The National Travel and Tourism Office serves as the Executive Secretariat for the Board. If you have questions or comments, please email [email protected].

Secretary raimondo appoints members of u.s. travel and tourism advisory board, office of public affairs.
Board Advises the Secretary on Matters that Relate to the Travel and Tourism Industry in the United States
Today, Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo announced the appointments of 32 leaders from businesses and organizations in the domestic travel and tourism industry to the U.S. Travel and Tourism Advisory Board (TTAB). TTAB members advise the Secretary of Commerce on how government policies and programs affect the travel and tourism industry and offer counsel on current and emerging issues to support sustainable growth of the travel and tourism industry as our nation’s economic engine.
"Travel and tourism returned with force in 2022 as we opened up our country once again to visitors from around the globe,” said Secretary Raimondo. “Since day one of the Biden Administration, the Commerce Department has taken decisive actions to support this industry’s recovery. The U.S. Travel and Tourism Advisory Board plays a vital role in providing expert recommendations and industry insight to optimize the American travel experience. I look forward to working with new and returning members.”
TTAB was first chartered in 2003 and has been re-chartered nine times. Past boards have provided advice on a wide range of policies and issues, including travel facilitation, visa policy, infrastructure, aviation security, tourism research, climate and economic sustainability.

Executive Director
David is Executive Director of State of Washington Tourism. Previously as Senior Vice President, Public Affairs of Visitor Seattle, he oversaw public policy, industry advocacy, government relations, crisis communications and strategic communications. His career in tourism began with statewide travel promotion, running press trips throughout Washington and working closely with the state tourism office on destination PR programs. David was previously President of the Puget Sound Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America and served on the board of directors of the Society of American Travel Writers.
Director of Strategic Partnerships and Tourism Development
Mike is a Washingtonian through-and-through. Born in Spokane, he grew up on Tiger Mountain, just east of Seattle. After high school, Mike fell in love with the tourism industry, first working on steamboats on the Mississippi River. His tourism career has taken him around the world. Among his many jobs, he was a photographer, a maitre’ d, and an overland tour guide in South America. He joined SWT in 2012 and after 7 years of working to help pass tourism marketing legislation, Mike loves playing a part in showcasing Washington to the world. He now lives in Seattle with his wife, two kids, and their dog.
Michelle Thana
Director of Marketing
Michelle joined SWT in 2021. A relatively new Washingtonian, Michelle has lived in the Pacific Northwest her entire life and grew up in Portland, Oregon. Her career in tourism began at Travel Portland, where she spent nearly five years working on from consumer marketing. From there, she hopped the river to lead the marketing team at Visit Vancouver USA from 2019 – 2021. Michelle is excited to help tell Washington’s story on a larger stage and bring her experience in consumer marketing to the team at this exciting point for tourism in the state.
Marianne Graff
Senior Content Manager
Marianne joined SWT in 2022. A lifelong Washingtonian, Marianne oversees B2B and B2C content creation, website growth and optimization, organic social media, influencer partnerships, email marketing, and more. Before joining SWT, Marianne worked in digital marketing and communications for the Whatcom Museum in Bellingham. Prior to that, she spent seven years as an editor and social media specialist at the daily Skagit Valley Herald in Mount Vernon. Marianne holds a degree in journalism from Western Washington University.
Matthew Ozuna
Destination Development Manager
Matthew joined the team in 2022 and previously worked with Destinations International, Simpleview, and other consulting teams on tourism projects. He grew up in the Yakima Valley, attended college in Walla Walla, and holds a Master of Tourism Administration with a concentration in Sustainable Tourism Management from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. At SWT, Matthew manages programs associated with scenic byways, rural tourism, industry education, and destination development grants. Before venturing to D.C., he worked with political campaigns, cultural heritage organizations, and educational institutions in the Walla Walla Valley.
TOURISM DEVELOPMENT MANAGER
Lisa joined SWT in 2023. She grew up in Spokane, attended college in Bellingham, and has worked with cruise lines, Alaska Native corporations, and family-operated companies in the Alaska Tourism Industry. Her genuine enthusiasm for tourism growth and development led to her serving on the District Export Council and Visit Anchorage Board of Directors. Returning to Washington, Lisa is excited to connect with SWT partners and travel trade in both domestic and international markets to boost tourism across Washington.
Beth Salgado
MARKETING COORDINATOR
Beth joined SWT in 2023. She recently moved to Washington from Colorado and grew up in New Mexico where she attended college. In Colorado, she worked for a healthcare marketing firm as a digital marketing specialist. Before that, she spent five years as a freelancer in copywriting, social media, and web design. Beth is excited about her new role in the tourism industry where she will be assisting with communications, website content, social media, and email marketing.
Andi joined the team in 2023 and has made Washington her home since arriving to serve with AmeriCorps VISTA in 2021. Originally from Georgia, Andi ventured into the tourism industry while working at a local advertising agency. In that position, she handled social media marketing for three destination marketing organizations within her home state. Andi is thrilled to play a role in SWT’s marketing initiatives, with a special emphasis on social media.
Tamara Rice
Destination Development Coordinator
Tamara joined SWT in 2024. A Washington resident since 2008, Tamara previously lived in rural Southeast Alaska, where she worked in the tourism industry, including the wilderness operator Alaska Discovery, as well as co-owning and operating a wildlife tour and kayak transport company with her husband. Most recently, she served as the Membership Director with the nonprofit association of the Washington Brewers Guild. Tamara is excited to support SWT’s grant applicants, provide program tech support, and contribute to SWT’s ongoing tourism work.

The MEC for finance, economic development and tourism, Nompumelelo Hlophe, has welcomed the appointment of Oupa Pilane, a new board member of South African Tourism (SAT), announced by cabinet on Thursday February 29.

“With experience spanning over 18 years in the tourism industry, Pilane is a self-made entrepreneur, tourism development consultant, local government specialist, business coach, and a preacher. He started his career as a spokesperson of the first premier of Mpumalanga, Dr Mathews Phosa,” she explained.

He is currently the national deputy chairperson of the Southern African Tourism Services Association and former chairperson of the Kruger Lowveld Chamber of Business and Tourism, among others.

AYESHA NURAIN JANAH Chairperson Nurain Janah is a Chartered Accountant, professional director, consultant & executive coach. With over 10 years’ experience as a director, she has held a portfolio of roles in investment and finance, construction and project management, and philanthropy. Nurain is currently Group Vice Chair at Hotels and Resorts Investment Pvt Ltd (HARIM), an international multi-industry business spanning hotels and resorts development, construction technology, marine products, and investment services. HARIM is a second-generation family-run business based in the Maldives with globally recognised construction projects. Since moving to the Maldives from New Zealand to join the family business in 2022, Nurain has transformed the family business to implement operational efficiencies and positioned HARIM to effectively pursue and implement international diversification and investment. Nurain is Founder and Director of Rehendhi Consulting, a global social enterprise supporting multinational corporations to embed environmental, social and governance into their strategies. Nurain is also Founder and Trustee of Authenticity Aotearoa, an award winning New Zealand-based charity empowering women of colour to express their authentic selves and working to create inclusive workplaces. Nurain serves as Trustee of Foundation North, a $1.3bn philanthropic impact investment funder, and she is a Member of the New Zealand National Advisory Council on the Employment of Women. She was selected as an Explorer by AirTree Ventures, a venture capital hedge fund. She is also an Advisory Board Member for The Code of Practice for Online Safety and Harms, a world first initiative. A Chartered Accountant and with a Masters in Professional Accounting and a Bachelor of Science, Nurain had a career as a Manager at Ernst & Young in the restructuring, turnaround and insolvency industry. FATHMATH THAUFEEQ CEO & Managing Director / Board Director Fathmath Thaufeeq was appointed by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to the role of CEO & Managing Director of Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), the national tourism promotion board of Maldives, on December 17, 2023. Having graduated with a Masters in Business Administration from the University of West of England, Bristol, Ms. Thaufeeq has over 17 years of experience in diverse fields such as human resource and management, procurement, and public relations. She has also held senior management positions for over 9 years. With her extensive knowledge and skills in management, Ms. Thaufeeq is able to bring all key stakeholders together to work towards accomplishing the pledges set out by the President of Maldives and to take Maldivian tourism to even greater heights. MAHA NASEER Board Director Maha Naseer was appointed as a Board of Director of Maldives Marketing and PR Corporation on 26th December 2023. A highly accomplished culinary professional, Ms. Maha brings a wealth of experience spanning various culinary domains. With more than 10 years of experience in the tourism industry, she has held key positions, showcasing her leadership skills and culinary expertise. Currently serving as the Freelance F&B Consultant and Entrepreneur, Ms. Maha has demonstrated her culinary expertise in different capacities. She has successfully navigated roles as a Freelance F&B Consultant and Pastry Designer, contributing her innovative thinking to projects at renowned establishments such as Fihalhohi Island Resort and Amilla Fushi Maldives. Additionally, her dedication to the culinary arts extends to teaching, where she has served as an instructor, sharing her knowledge and skills with aspiring chefs. Maha’s remarkable achievements include being recognized as the first Maldivian to receive the prestigious “Master Chef” recognition by the World Master Chef Society. Her strategic thinking and organizational skills were further honoured during her term of service as the Secretary General of The Chefs Guild of Maldives from 2019 to 2023. Maha, a proud graduate in culinary arts and cuisine from Singapore Creative Culinaire (2014), holds a MasterChef certification from the World MasterChef Society (2022). Additionally, her commitment to the art of baking is evident through her graduation from the prestigious Lavonne Academy of Baking Science and Pastry Arts in 2017.
AMINATH VULAU MOHAMED NAZIM Board Director
Aminath Vulau Mohamed Nazim did her undergraduate and postgraduate studies in the prestigious University of Birmingham, UK in Hospitality, Tourism management, and is currently pursuing her PhD in University of Primorska, Slovenia in Innovative tourism. She has been working in the field of hospitality and tourism in the Maldives and previously in the UK for the past 15 years. She is the co-founder and MD of Hotel 78 group private limited. Their portfolio includes two of the longest running and top rated guesthouses and restaurants in Hulhumale and have recently expanded into logistics and transport as well. h78 has won various awards including the Agoda Gold Circle award, TripAdvisor traveler recommendation awards and Booking.com awards just to name a few in its 9 years in operation. She has been serving as the Chairperson of one of the first corporate society boards in the Maldives for the past 7 years. She also sits on the advisory board of the Fertility Support Community, an organisation that helps couples to get fertility assistance and to spread awareness about fertility issues. Her key strengths are in strategy development and research. As well as having worked in Maldives and abroad, she has a unique understanding of cultural nuances and a wealth of experience that she uses in work at her successful businesses to understand and serve customers better. During her PhD. studies, she has undertaken various research projects and understands the value of a data drive marketing strategy. She is one of the first female owners and leaders in the fast growing guesthouse industry here in the Maldives.
RAFIL MOHAMED Board Director
Rafil Mohamed is currently working as the Executive Director of the Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI). A role he has filled since July of 2018. He is tasked with overseeing day-to-day operations, assisting in long-term strategic planning, enhancing membership levels, leading member communications and engagement and being the primary liaison of MATI for Governmental Agencies, Private sector stakeholders as well as international agencies. He has also worked as a Deputy Director for the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation during which he led the team tasked with the formulation of the integrated marketing campaign titled the ‘’Story of Maldives Campaign’’ 2017/2018 which included components such as the ‘’Adventures of Maldives – video competition’’ and the ‘’Visit Maldives Photography Ambassadorships’’ He is also a Co-founder and former Director of the International Maldives Travel Market (IMTM), a B2B Travel and Trade fair held annually in Maldives. He oversaw the recruitment and management of Hosted Buyers, Airline Partners and Accommodation Partners during his tenure at IMTM. He started his career in the Tourism Industry of Maldives as scuba diving guide / instructor and has worked on liveaboards such as Dhoni Stella 1 and 2, Scubaspa Maldives and briefly on Dream Voyager and Black Pearl. He has also worked as a Diving Operations Manager for Dhoni Stella 1 and 2. He holds a Master’s Degree in Marketing from the University of Sydney and a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management from the Manchester Metropolitan University. He also holds a Diploma in Strategy and has also completed the Creative Director program from the Miami Ad School Sri Lanka and Maldives. In terms of professional scuba diving, he holds a PADI IDC Staff Instructor Rating and an SSI Assistant Instructor Trainer rating.

HKTB Board Members
The Board of the HKTB comprises 20 Members, representing a broad cross-section of the tourism and other industries. Members of the Board are appointed by the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. They are broadly based and include, amongst others, passenger carriers, hotel operators, licensed travel agents, tour operators, retailers and restaurant operators.
