Last year, the indie-rock veterans spoke to NME about pulling together their best-of album, and how “There’s quite a lot of snobbery about greatest hits.”
“When I was a kid I grew up with greatest hits records,” frontman Alex Kapranos said. “My folks didn’t have a 4,000 LP record collection. They had best-ofs, they had greatest hits, they had ‘Changes’ by Bowie. They didn’t have ‘Low’, they didn’t have ‘Lodger’ – and that was enough for them. They just wanted to hear the best bits, they just wanted to hear the hits. That’s great.”
He added: “If that’s all they wanted to hear, if that’s all these needed to hear from those artists then fuck it – you enjoy that! But also, those records were something else. That’s what it was for them, but for me it was an introduction: it was that doorway that I could step through into the world of those artists.”

Armed with an astute sense of what constitutes the “classic pop song” (famously proclaiming that they write music “to make girls dance to”) the music of Franz Ferdinand continues to resonate globally, and over the course of nearly two decades they’ve become, commercially and critically, one of the biggest UK bands in the world, selling over 10 million albums, 1.2 billion streams to date, 14 platinum albums, winning Brit, Ivor Novello + Mercury Prize awards, Grammy nominations and selling 6 million tickets for their incendiary live show worldwide.
Franz Ferdinand signed to Domino in May 2003 and released their first single, “Darts Of Pleasure” shortly after. Second single “Take Me Out” exploded onto the international stage, putting the band firmly on the global map and was a precursor to their eponymous debut album which went on to sell nearly four million copies worldwide.
Artistically always forging forward, their following albums, You Could Have It So Much Better (2005), Tonight: Franz Ferdinand (2009), Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action (2013) and Always Ascending (2018) all offered a new take on the Franz template and saw them work with some of the most pioneering producers around including Dan Carey, Joe Goddard and Alexis Taylor of Hot Chip, Todd Terje and Philippe Zdar.

Death Cab, Franz Ferdinand Teaming Up For Indie-Riffic North American Tour
Maybe they could call it "The Sensitive and the Scottish." Or perhaps "Franz Cab for Cutie." Whichever clever name they decide upon, it's official: Death Cab for Cutie and Franz Ferdinand are teaming up for a co-headlining tour of indie-riffic proportions, set to kick off this spring.
On Thursday (February 2) representatives for both bands' labels confirmed -- via a breathlessly written press release -- the "tour of which dreams are made," a North American jaunt that gets under way on March 22 in Portland, Oregon, and comes to a close on April 26 in Canada.
Both DCFC and FF have spent much of the past half-year crisscrossing the globe in support of their respective new albums, Plans and You Can Have It So Much Better. They've each also recently signed on for big-ticket U.S. festival appearances later this year, as Death Cab have committed to the Bonnaroo fest in June (see [article id="1522919"]"Radiohead, Beck, Death Cab, Elvis Costello Playing Bonnaroo"[/article]) while Franz will play Coachella (see [article id="1522840"]"Tool And Franz Ferdinand Will Rock Coachella"[/article]) three days after the Franz Cab tour ends.
An on-sale date for tickets has not been announced, though it is expected to be sometime around February 9 or 10.
Dates for the Death Cab for Cutie/ Franz Ferdinand co-headlining tour, according to the bands' labels:

Having nearly completed work on its sophomore Domino/Epic album, U.K. rock act Franz Ferdinand has unveiled plans for a fall North American tour. The month-long trek will begin Sept. 20 in Chicago and has dates on tap through Oct. 18 in Toronto. The group is expected to return for more shows in the first portion of 2006. Like its 2004 predecessor, the new album will be a self-titled affair. A number of songs from the set, due Oct. 4, were road-tested earlier this spring during a series of gigs in Russia, which allowed the band to fine-tune them before recording final versions. “By the time we’d gone to Russia, we had the rough versions of the songs down,” lead singer Alex Kapranos tells Billboard.com. “But in some ways, it was very, very good for us to play them in Russia. I don’t think a song is complete until you’ve performed it in front of people live, which brings up a whole interesting point. I don’t think a song is ever complete. Songs are always evolving. They’re never quite the same. But you understand a song in a different way when you see how an audience responds to it. You can exaggerate the things that are working because you can see how people react.” Following the North American dates, Franz Ferdinand will embark on a European tour Oct. 28 in Paris. The group is also assembling its first DVD, which will feature footage contributed by fans. Here are Franz Ferdinand’s tour dates: Aug. 9: San Sebastian, Spain (Estadio de Anoeta; w/ U2) Aug. 11: Madrid (Estadio Vicente Calderon; w/ U2) Aug. 20-21: Staffordshire/Chelmsford, England (V Festival) Aug. 30-31: Edinburgh (Edinburgh Castle) Sept. 20: Chicago (Aragon Ballroom) Sept. 21: Minneapolis (Target Center) Sept. 22: Kansas City, Mo. (Uptown Theatre) Sept. 23: St. Louis (Pageant) Sept. 25: Austin, Texas (Austin City Limits Festival) Sept. 27: Denver (Fillmore Auditorium) Sept. 28: Magna, Utah (Great Salt Air Amphitheatre) Oct. 1-2: Seattle (Paramount Theatre) Oct. 3: Portland, Ore. (Rose Garden Arena) Oct. 4: Vancouver (Orpheum Theatre) Oct. 6: San Francisco ( Bill Graham Civic Auditorium) Oct. 7: Los Angeles (Greek Theatre) Oct. 9: San Diego (SDSU Open Air Theatre) Oct. 11: Las Vegas (the Joint) Oct. 17: New York (Theatre at Madison Square Garden) Oct. 18: Toronto (Ricoh Centre) Oct. 28: Paris (Zenith) Oct. 31: Rouen, France (31st) Nov. 1: Lille, France (Zenith) Nov. 2: Metz, France (Les Arenes) Nov. 4: Grenoble, France (Zenith) Nov. 7: Dusseldorf, Germany (Phillishalle) Nov. 8: Berlin (Tempodrom) Nov. 9: Hamburg, Germany (Colour Line Arena) Dec. 12: Munich (Zenith)

Pixies Add Second North American Leg to Its 2023 World Tour
Franz Ferdinand and Bully Will be Special Guestson all Pixies' Leg Two Headline Dates
Today, alt-rock icons Pixies announce the addition of Leg Two for its 2023 North American concert tour. With many dates on Leg One already sold out, Leg Two launches on June 8 and will see the band headlining in venues from Boston to Ohio to Texas, as well as making a special appearance at Bonnaroo on June 18. Also announced, the Scottish rock band Franz Ferdinand, and American indie rockers Bully will be Special Guests on all Pixies’ Leg Two headline dates. Confirmed shows for Legs One and Two are below; tickets for Leg Two go on sale Friday, February 3 at https://pixies.ffm.to/live.OPR ; remaining tickets for Leg One dates are currently on sale at https://pixies.ffm.to/live.OPR
All North American dates are in support of Pixies’ latest album, Doggerel (BMG), and are part of the band’s 2022-2023 World Tour that launched last Spring and has seen the band playing to sold-out headline shows throughout the UK, Europe, South America, Japan, New Zealand and Australia.
As Pixies rehearse 90-100 songs before every tour, there are no predetermined set lists for any of the concerts, the band will play what they want when they want, and each “next” song is determined just before its first note is played. Consequently, every Pixies show is different.
In his review of Pixies’ Edinburgh show last August, David Pollock from The Scotsman wrote, “Grimy, relentless and effortlessly tuneful, this was some show from the Pixies, packing no fewer than 37 songs into a two-hour set. This was Maximum Pixies… a ‘Now That’s What I Call a Pixies set,’ which condensed more than 35 years of history into one bullet-sized dose. ” And from NME’ s Sam Moore at Spain’s Mad Cool Festival, “Things you expect to see at your average Pixies gig: hit after hit after hit. ‘Gouge Away’? Check. ‘Wave Of Mutilation’? Of course! ‘Caribou’? Naturally. No banter – just bangers. — You want more? Don’t worry: Black Francis and Co. have got you, with ‘Hey’, ‘Tame’, ‘Monkey Gone To Heaven’ and ‘Vamos.’” Chris Schulz with the New Zealand Herald wrote, “Pixies’ Sydney Opera House show is a rambunctious, confrontational blast from the past. ‘Bone Machine,’ ‘Debaser,’ ‘Gouge Away,’ ‘Here Comes Your Man,’ and ‘Where Is My Mind?’ All get wickedly delicious outings, bringing the crowd to their feet and dancing and singing along in unison. No opening act, just two hours and 31 songs of pure Pixies, who proved they’re still as weird and wonderfully bonkers as their fans. That standing ovation lasted for minutes – and they deserved every second of it.”
Confirmed dates for Pixies’ North American tour are as follows:
4 Fox Theater, Oakland, CA
6 Golden State Theatre, Monterey, CA
8 The Van Buren, Phoenix, AZ
9 Lensic Performing Arts Center, Santa Fe, NM
10 The Mission Ballroom, Denver, CO

Hans Zimmer Talks About First North American Tour Dates in 7 Years, the Magic of Composing for Film
Composer Hans Zimmer’s film scores have soundtracked magic movie moments in “The Lion King," "The Dark Knight” and both new “Dune” movies, to name a few

Zimmer’s film scores have soundtracked magic movie moments in “The Lion King," "The Dark Knight” and both new “Dune” movies, to name a few. This fall, the “Hans Zimmer Live” tour will hit U.S. and Canada, marking the first time Zimmer has performed in North America in seven years. (Photo by Rebecca Cabage/Invision/AP, File)
LOS ANGELES (AP) — For generations, German composer Hans Zimmer 's film scores have soundtracked magic movie moments in “The Lion King,” “Gladiator," the “Dark Knight” trilogy, and most recently, “Dune” and “Dune: Part Two.” This fall, Zimmer will bring his award-winning scores to the live stage.
His “Hans Zimmer Live” tour, which sold out in Europe, will make its way to the U.S. and Canada this fall, marking the first time Zimmer has performed in North America in seven years.
The last time, as some fans may recall, was a 2017 Coachella performance.
Over Zoom from New York , Zimmer said he was inspired after “refusing to get onto a stage for 40 years” because of something his friends, The Smiths' Johnny Marr and Pharrell Williams, told him.
“You have to look your audience in the eye. You can’t hide behind the screen forever. You know, you owe it to your, you know, audience,” he says they told him. And after Coachella, he realized: “I can do this,” he said.
Having done the run in Europe, “we're at the top of our game at the moment,” he says of his orchestra.
Photos You Should See
Don't expect a traditional, classical music setting or a piano concerto — at “Hans Zimmer Live,” there is no conductor, no sheet music in front of each musician, and not a single frame from any of the films he's referencing.
“I come from rock and roll and I believe in putting on a show,” he says. “People stay with us because we give them an experience which they’ve never had before... Life is hard. Life is tough these days. And people worked hard to go to pay for these tickets, so we better pull off a show that is absolutely worthy of them coming and seeing us."
“Hans Zimmer Live” kicks off at the Gas South Arena in Duluth, Ga. on Sept. 6 and will hit 17 cities across the U.S. and Canada before concluding at the Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia on Oct. 6.
The tour includes stops in Hollywood, Florida; Raleigh, North Carolina; New York; Baltimore; Boston; Montreal and Toronto; Minneapolis; Chicago; Fort Worth, Texas ; Denver; Las Vegas; Los Angeles; Oakland, California, and Seattle.
Zimmer says attendees can expect a diverse audience. “I’ve looked out at the audience and there’s a mom with her grandson sitting next to a guy with a mohawk, sitting next to a man in a business suit, sitting next to another bunch of, you know, bikers,” Zimmer said. “So, it’s not just multi-generational, it’s multicultural.”
In more ways than one: Zimmer’s orchestra is from Ukraine; “Two weeks after the invasion started , we managed to get about half of them out of Odessa,” he says. Lebo M, who sings “The Lion King” theme, was a political refugee from South Africa when Zimmer first met him. Pedro Eustache, his woodwind player, is from Venezuela , “and he thinks he can probably never go back home,” says Zimmer.
“I have this very, very international group of players and ... part of what makes them such emotionally committed musicians is that they all have a story to tell you.”
“Hans Zimmer Live,” which has been recently rearranged, includes works from “Gladiator,” “Pirates of the Caribbean,” “The Dark Knight,” “Interstellar,” “The Lion King,” “The Last Samurai,” and “Dune.”
“Each piece is connected with the adventure of actually creating it, the adventure of actually making that movie, the adventure of the collaboration, the adventure of, you know, ‘How did we get here?", he says. "Where did this journey start? And how can we make sure that it never ends?
“Each one of those movies is painted in color and affected by what is going on around us. And they have all been extraordinary journeys.”
All of these films and their scores are vastly different, but Zimmer's idiosyncratic approach and arrangements should be considered the connective tissue. That, and a certain je ne sais quoi that makes an effective — and affecting — score.
“You need to be committed. You need to be honest. You can’t be sentimental,” he says of a successful score. “The other thing is, it’s the people who are performing it. Because if you think about it, the last actors that really get hired, the last actors that perform in a movie, are the musicians. So, I’m very careful about picking the people I work with.”
Tickets for “Hans Zimmer Live” will become available for purchase at www.hanszimmerlive.com , starting at March 22 at 10 am local time.

Hans Zimmer talks about first North American tour dates in 7 years, the magic of composing for film
Composer Hans Zimmer’s film scores have soundtracked magic movie moments in “The Lion King," "The Dark Knight” and both new “Dune” movies, to name a few
LOS ANGELES -- For generations, German composer Hans Zimmer 's film scores have soundtracked magic movie moments in “The Lion King,” “Gladiator," the “Dark Knight” trilogy, and most recently, “Dune” and “Dune: Part Two.” This fall, Zimmer will bring his award-winning scores to the live stage.
His “Hans Zimmer Live” tour, which sold out in Europe, will make its way to the U.S. and Canada this fall, marking the first time Zimmer has performed in North America in seven years.
The last time, as some fans may recall, was a 2017 Coachella performance.
Over Zoom from New York, Zimmer said he was inspired after “refusing to get onto a stage for 40 years” because of something his friends, The Smiths' Johnny Marr and Pharrell Williams, told him.
The tour includes stops in Hollywood, Florida; Raleigh, North Carolina; New York; Baltimore; Boston; Montreal and Toronto; Minneapolis; Chicago; Fort Worth, Texas; Denver; Las Vegas; Los Angeles; Oakland, California, and Seattle.
In more ways than one: Zimmer’s orchestra is from Ukraine; “Two weeks after the invasion started, we managed to get about half of them out of Odessa,” he says. Lebo M, who sings “The Lion King” theme, was a political refugee from South Africa when Zimmer first met him. Pedro Eustache, his woodwind player, is from Venezuela, “and he thinks he can probably never go back home,” says Zimmer.
Tickets for “Hans Zimmer Live” will become available for purchase at www.hanszimmerlive.com, starting at March 22 at 10 am local time.
