Tour Overview

See the best of the Douro Valley on a private guided tour. Travel in the comfort of a luxury Mercedes to visit the famous Mateus Palace, visit wineries, experience a gourmet winery lunch, enjoy the option of sailing the Douro River on a traditional Rabelo boat, and drive one of the ‘most beautiful roads in the world’.

Tried and tested by the Winerist team we have chosen this tour as an excellent introduction to everything the Douro Valley has to offer. If you only have a day to spend in the Douro and you would like to see it with the comfort of your own private vehicle and guide for the day, we highly recommend this tour.

Your Private Douro Valley Tour Itinerary

8.30 am : Your friendly guide will meet you at your hotel or pick-up point of your choice in Porto. Our recommended start time is 8.30 am but it can be adapted to your preferences. (Pick-ups are from within Porto, however, other locations can be accommodated but may be subject to an additional fee upon request).

Set off in your air-conditioned luxury Mercedes and enjoy the views as you are driven towards the Douro Valley and your first destination of the day, the splendid Mateus Palace.

Mateus Palace : Enjoy a guided tour of this important emblem of Northern Portugal's history. Built in the first half of the 18th century, in 1910 it was classified as a National Monument. Your tour will include the ornate manor house and the beautiful gardens and you will learn fascinating stories about its history as you go. You will recognise the palace as that which is depicted on the labels of the famous Mateus rosé wine.

Winery visit and lunch : After your visit to the Mateus Palace your guide will take you onwards to visit a renowned winery set amongst the beautiful terraces of the Douro Valley. Explore the cellars and learn about the history of the winery and all about its winemaking processes. A traditional lunch will be served with specialities of the estate, paired with its highly regarded wines.

Picturesque drive : After lunch, you will be driven along the famous N222 road, known as ‘one of the most beautiful roads in the world’!

Rabelo cruise or 2nd winery visit : In the afternoon you will have a choice of taking a relaxing river cruise or exploring a 2nd winery in the Douro Valley.

Rabelo cruise: Arriving in Pinhão you will embark on a traditional Rabelo boat for a relaxing cruise along the river. These boats were used to transport the Port wine from the Valley to the wine cellars in Porto. This is an opportunity to sit back and soak up the spectacular scenery as you sail along the historical Douro River.

Winery visit: Enjoy another gorgeous Douro Valley estate, admiring the beautiful setting and tasting the wines that are explained, often by the winemakers themselves!

6.00 pm : After experiencing an amazing day in the Douro Valley, your guide will drive you back to the centre of Porto to your preferred drop-off location.

Welcome to Portugal. Wine Tourism in Portugal will invite you to discover the amazing Douro Valley. The Private Driver in a deluxe vehicle Mercedes is waiting for you in the lobby of your Hotel in Porto. Enjoy the scenic 2-hour road trip to the Douro Valley ( private driver option ).

You will visit  Quinta da Pacheca . One of the most well-known properties of the Douro Valley, stands out for having been the first to bottle wine under its own brand. The first reference to the Quinta is in a document dated of the 17thApril 1738, where it is called "the Pacheca" because its owner was then D. Mariana Pacheco Pereira. But it was only in 1903 that D. José Freire de Serpa Pimentel decided to develop his growing interest in oenology, acquiring the property in order to devote himself to the wine production.  A guided visit where you will have the opportunity to know the history, as well as the wine-making processes of the wines of Pacheca and a wine tasting.

After the wine experience you will enjoy  lunch  at  Quinta da Pacheca Restaurant  that offers a touch of luxury and gourmet and a search for constant quality, while keeping the true essence of the traditional Portuguese cuisine. Always prepared with fresh products of the land, the restaurant dishes are a real temptation. The quality of this cuisine, famous throughout the Douro region, makes the restaurant of Quinta da Pacheca the Ex-libris of the estate, a warm and relaxing place with a view over the Douro and the vine terraces, completed by the comfort of typical fireplace.

As the tour continues, you will have the oportunity to discover the famous  Quinta do Seixo . The Quinta is located in Cima-Corgo, in the heart of the Douro Region, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Following the Douro river from Régua to Pinhão, you can easily discover this old Quinta of the 17th century and its cellar of contemporary design. The view from Quinta do Seixo is breathtaking throughout the year, in a constant change of colour and light. A magnificent landscape, shaped by man in shale terraces, a surprising contrast with the brightness of the Douro river and the view of the picturesque village of Pinhão nearby. The vineyard, with over 100 years, is a true heritage of many traditional Douro grape varieties that still resist to the most harsh conditions and temperatures, producing unique and top quality wines.  You will have a g uided visit to the winery, Wine Cellar and Robotic Lagares. Tasting of two Porto Wines in a contemporary room and a magnificent terrace with one of the best views over the Douro River and the landscape.

After the visit, you will enjoy a relaxing moment with a  sailing cruise in the Douro River , while you taste Porto wine. Depart, on a exclusive basis, aboard a  sailing ship  for the discovery of the territory that the river has carved and men sculpted man, a region that was the source of compelling values for the humanity. Anew way of discovering Douro, an region of heritage, landscapes and wines that are unique in the world. Aboard the sailing ship live moments of intimacy with the nature while you travel with emotion along the history until the times when therabelosboats moved by the force of the sails.  Be amazed by the scenarios that Douro has to offer.

The Private driver will drop you off in Porto ( private driver option ).

The Douro Valley Wine Tour You Need to Know About

Dour Valley wine tour Croft vineyards

If you’re planning to visit Northern Portugal, a Douro Valley wine tour is one of the best experiences for wine lovers.

Not only is Douro Valley a UNESCO World Heritage site and the oldest demarcated wine region, but it’s also the only place in the world that makes port. Like how Champagne can only come from the region in France. Plus, there are some producers making delicious non-fortified wines at a great value.

Douro Valley is an easy day trip from the city of Porto. You could rent a car and drive out, but booking a full-day tour is a better way to see this beautiful region. The roads are narrow, steep, and winding. You do not want to be navigating this on your own after a few glasses of 20% ABV wine!

Side note: If you’re prone to motion sickness like I am, I swear by this anti-nausea wristband . I bring it with me on every trip I take, and it has saved me so many times.

I loved this small group tour that included a delicious lunch and a boat trip add-on. Our local guide, João, picked us up at our hotel in the morning. And my husband and I joined a few other couples in the comfortable van.

The drive is about two hours out to Douro Valley with beautiful scenery. Along the way, João shared fun facts about the history of the place, culture, and winemaking.

While you’re here, don’t miss taking my wine country destination quiz ! It will magically match your taste buds, travel style, and winederlust desires to reveal the wine region of your dreams. Plus, you’ll get my wine region guide to make planning a breeze. Take the quiz .

Recommendations may be affiliate links on which I earn a small commission at no additional cost to you. This helps me share new wine destinations with you and I only recommend products and services that I love and think you’ll love too!

What is Port?

Before I get too far, let me go over a few quick facts about port in case you’re not familiar with it.

  • Port, or Porto as it’s known locally, is a fortified wine, meaning they add alcohol (a neutral grape spirit – usually brandy) about halfway through the fermentation process. This kills the yeast before it can finish eating the sugar in the wine, leaving a naturally sweet wine with a whopping 19-22% alcohol.
  • Port was originally fortified to prevent spoilage during transit on the Douro River down to the Porto Port houses in Vila Nova de Gaia (across the river from the city of Porto).
  • In Portuguese, a Quinta is a wine-producing estate. They’re classified on a scale of A to F (with A being the best wineries) based on categories like age of the vines, vine density, soil type, and grape varieties.
  • Touriga Nacional is the preferred grape in port wine production but it’s difficult to grow so Touriga Franca is most common. There are also 100 other grape varieties allowed.
  • Port can be made in red, white, and rosé styles. Red is most common and you’ll see ruby or tawny versions (keep reading for more on that).

Okay, now back to the tour…

Which wine region should you visit? Click to take the quiz.

Quinta do Tedo Port Tasting

After a scenic drive and quick pick-up of the last couple at the nearby train station, we arrived at Quinta do Tedo, our first winery visit. They are a class A quinta that makes a few different port styles, as well as other non-fortified wines with the grapes not used in their port.

The visit started with a tour of the property, overlooking the rows of vines cresting over the rolling hills.

View from Quinta do Tedo

Grapes are hand-harvested and then placed in large stone troughs called lagares and manually crushed by human feet (yes, you read that right!). This is the traditional method called foot treading still used by some of the high-quality port producers. It helps bring color out of the skins without extracting unwanted flavors.

Eight to twelve people foot tread each lagar for two to three hours a day over three to four days. Sounds exhausting to me, but our host assured us that they keep spirits up with music, dancing, and plenty of glasses of port!

Next, we toured the cellar. We learned how ruby port retains its reddish color and fruit flavors with the use of large old oak barrels. This minimizes the effect that oxygen and oak can have on the flavors of the wine.

On the flip side, tawny port gets its brownish hue and develops flavors like walnut, coffee, chocolate, and caramel by aging in smaller barrels called pipes.

Quinta do Tedo wine cellar

Most ports are a blend of different years. But our host explained that in great years, a port producer can decide to declare a vintage and make a port using grapes only from that year’s harvest.

The wine then goes through an assessment process to be approved as a vintage port. On average, most producers only have three vintages per decade and these wines improve in the bottle with age.

The tour ended back in the tasting room with a sampling of three ports.

Quinta do Tedo ruby port tasting

The rosé was slightly chilled and refreshing with raspberry and red fruit flavors. The ruby also had some red fruit notes, plus black cherry and a hint of orange. The tawny was my favorite, with aromas of hazelnut and spices, and flavors of dried fruit.

Pin for Later!

Boat Cruise on Douro River & Lunch in Pinhão

Our next stop was an add-on to the tour, but everyone in our group opted to do the boat ride. I’d recommend it if your budget allows, although if you decide not to, you can explore the cute village of Pinhão during your free time.

Douro River boat

As I mentioned earlier, the Douro River was important for port as this was how they transported it to the shippers in Vila Nova de Gaia. Today, the flat-bottomed boats called “barcos rabelos” are only used for racing and other displays. But the boat tour gives you a feeling of what it might have been like.

Floating along on the waters of the Douro River, we were surrounded by emerald slopes filled with rows of vines and picturesque quintas. It’s truly one of the most beautiful places I’ve been.

João passed around glasses of port for us to enjoy during the ride — a perfect aperitif to lunch.

Back on shore, it was a quick drive to the restaurant, where we had several choices of traditional Douro cuisine. My husband was brave enough to go for the octopus, which he’d never had before. This earned him the endearing nickname “Octopus Man” for the rest of our tour.

Quinta do Jalloto Wine Tasting

After lunch it was back on the road to the second vineyard. The ride up was particularly steep, but the spectacular views of the terraced vineyards were well worth it.

Right off the parking lot is one of the most beautiful landscapes in all of Douro Valley. You can see all the way down to the main town of Pinhão and follow the winding river through the hillsides.

Wine Travelista at Quinta do Jalloto

Once we had our fill of the photo op, we were greeted by our host for a short tour. Quinta do Jalloto is a small, family-owned winery that makes non-fortified wines.

Like Quinta do Tedo, they still follow the traditional methods of hand-picking during harvest season and foot treading to produce high-quality small-batch wines.

Quinta do Jalloto vineyard

The family also makes their own honey and olive oil. We learned that bees pollinate cover crops that grow around the vines and the olive trees help shelter the vines against strong winds.

Our tasting was on the terrace with more breathtaking views. We sampled their white, rosé, and red wines — all very tasty and they went well with the olive oil, bread, and honey pairings. The wines are very affordable and we grabbed a bottle of the rosé to take with us.

Croft Port Tasting

I’m not sure if this is usually included in the tour, but we were running ahead of schedule so at the end of the day João made a quick stop at the Quinta da Roeda estate. The vineyard was acquired in 1889 and is currently owned by Croft.

We enjoyed tasting a couple of their ports in the restored visitors center, formerly the estate’s stables. The highlight for me was exploring the grounds. It looks like something out of a postcard!

Croft vineyard tour

From there we headed back to Porto, napping along the way. We were dropped off in the early evening at our hotel. And João and our new vacation friends bid farewell to the “Octopus Man.”

If you’re interested in this full day guided tour, here’s where you can book it .

Where to Stay in Porto, Portugal

Most of the hotels and historical attractions are located on the Porto side of the river. The hills are pretty steep on the roads leading away from the river, so if walking uphill is not your thing then stay closer to the river.

Or if you want to be closer to the port wine cellars, you can choose a place on the other side of the river in Vila Nova de Gaia. There’s a tram you can take up to the bridge to cross over to the Porto side, where you’ll have incredible views of the two cities.

For hotel reservations, I like to use Booking.com. Just enter “Porto, Portugal” and select your dates below to see available options.

BTW, if you’re a cat person, Porto is cat heaven. This little mustachioed guy kept visiting us on our patio. And then brought five of his friends!

Porto Wine Cellars

Guide to visit the wineries in Vila Nova de Gaia

Visiting the Porto wine cellars

How the porto wineries operate.

  • Book a visit with tasting

Which Porto winery to visit?

Wine cellar + tourist bus + cruise offer, how to reach the porto wineries, visit to the douro region.

Porto Wine Cellars are the place where port wine , produced in the Douro Valley region, is stored.

In Portuguese, the cellars are known as caves. So when you see that word walking around Porto, you know what it means.

Technically the wineries are not in the city of Porto, they are actually in the city of Vila Nova de Gaia . To get there, you just have to cross the river across the  Dom Luis I Bridge from the Ribeira . It's just a few minutes and in addition it's a very pleasant walk with one of the best views of Porto’s riverfront.

On the other side if you are looking to book a day trip to the region where this wine is made, you should take a look at our Douro Valley section, since the Douro Valley is where the port wine comes from.

Now, after that little explanation, let's find more about the wine cellars in Porto ! 👇🏼

douro river cruise and port wine cellars tour

We recommend anyone visiting Porto to make a visit to the wine cellars. It is interesting to learn about the history, the processes and the impact that wine has had on the city. In addition to the delightful tasting that awaits you at the end of the tour.

Origin of port wine

In the Douro Valley region white and red wine was already being produced in the 17th century. But it was the conflicts of 1678 between England and France that led to the emergence of port wine. The English ran out of wine imports from France, and in the search for alternatives they came across the wines of the Douro. They experimented mixing the red wine with spirits or brandy, to stop fermentation and be able to preserve it better during the voyage to England. This is how Porto wine or port wine was born and became popular.

Thanks to this origin related to England, you will see that many wineries have names that are not Portuguese at all. It was not until the creation of the Real Companhia Velha , in 1781, that the Portuguese began to enter the port wine business as well.

douro river cruise and port wine cellars tour

In the guided tours of the different Porto wine cellars, they will explain you the whole journey of the grapes until they are transformed into this precious wine. While your guide tells you everything, you walk through the barrel rooms, some of which are reserved for celebrities.

At the end of the visit you will go to a tasting room where you will be served two or three types of Porto to enjoy at your leisure.

The generic tour usually costs between 10€ and 15€, and is offered in different languages.

You can make a reservation in advance, in order to be able to do the visit when you desire. That said, you can also make the reservation at the winery on the same day, but you run the risk of not being able to find a place in the language or the time you desire.

You should always ask for updated schedules because each winery has different hours of operation and can vary according to demand.

The wineries are mostly quite close to each other and almost all of them close early, so it is best to arrive before 5 pm.

All the wineries have their own store where you can buy bottles of port wine and other souvenirs related to the world of wine to take home.

douro river cruise and port wine cellars tour

The truth is that all of them are beautiful, interesting and with a wonderful product. So you really don't need to give it too much thought. And if you can, visit more than one.

Poças: a family business with more than 100 years of history, but with a young spirit. They have a newly renovated visitor center. We recommend visiting them to get to know a more modern approach of port wine. Their visitor center is a bit away from the river (approximately a 20 min walk). Nevertheless, it’s worth the effort because it tends to be not as crowded as the ones by the river front. Thus, you will be in a relaxed atmosphere to appreciate one of the best port wines. Book a visit here .

Calém : is one of the classic wineries and one of the first you find when crossing the Dom Luis I Bridge. It has a small interactive museum that you can walk around while waiting for your guided tour. Book a visit here.

Sandeman: A classic and well located winery in a 1797 building.

Ramos Pinto: in the riverfront area, with a small museum of antique viticultural objects. You can buy their old posters to take home.

Real Companhia Velha: the first Portuguese port wine house.

Offley: one of the old British companies.

Ferreira: You have to walk a bit along the river in Vila Nova de Gaia to get there. Nevertheless, its location in an old convent, makes it is well worth it!

douro river cruise and port wine cellars tour

If you buy a ticket for this  Porto tourist bus , you have access to its two routes covering the whole city for 48 hours, including the wineries area. It includes a visit with wine tasting at the Cálem Cellar and a river cruise.

Buses 900, 901 904 and 906 will take you there, but we recommend passing the Don Luis Bridge walking, starting at the La Ribeira and continuing on foot to the cellars.

We recommend you not to hesitate, and visit at least one winery. You will realize that it is one of the essential visits to do in Porto.

If you have the time and can afford a visit to the Douro Valley from Porto  we highly encourage you to do it. Here you will be dazzled by the staggering landscape and the vineyards that stretch all the way to the river. You can visit the quintas (the Portuguese name for the estates) where wine is produced and do wine tasting as well.

6 Best Things to do in Douro Valley Portugal

L isted as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Douro Valley Portugal is the world’s oldest demarcated wine region. Nestled in Northern Portugal, the valley is known for its beautiful lookout points, charming villages and abundant wineries. About an hour from the city of Porto, the Douro wine region can easily be visited on a day trip or a long weekend trip while visiting Portugal . Viking River Cruises also offers an intimate longship journey through the Douro.

Table wine and port wine are produced here and shipped all over the world. Spend the day exploring vineyards, crushing grapes with your feet or sampling local wines. In addition to wine tasting , visitors can take a river cruise on the Douro River, go hiking and visit a natural park. Plus, be sure to explore the valley’s villages. Read about these activities, and more, with our roundup of the 6 best things to do in Douro Valley Portugal.

1. Visit a winery

A trip to Douro Valley would be incomplete without a visit to a winery. Quinta da Pacheca in Lamego sits in the heart of the Douro Valley. One of the region’s oldest wine estates, Quinta da Pacheca is a winery, hotel and olive producer all-in-one. Wine lovers can take a guided tour of the winery, book a tasting, go grape stomping, participate in an olive harvesting experience and more. The wine hotel features traditional guest rooms or for something a little more adventurous, guests can go glamping in huge wine barrels.

In addition, Quinta Nova is another hotel and winery that goes way back. Here, visitors can go wine tasting, take a wine-making class, enjoy a vineyard tour at sunset and order traditional Portuguese food at the winery restaurant. Plus, there is a museum associated with the winery that preserves its history.

Quinta do Seixo

Visit Quinta do Seixo for beautiful views over the valley. This winery is part of the Sandeman brand, a popular port wine producer. Here, visitors can have a picnic in the vineyard, take a guided tour of the estate or book a tasting. Quinta do Vale Meao is another famous winery. In the city of Vila Nova de Foz Côa, this winery is family-owned and a great place to learn about Douro Valley wine production.

2. Take a boat tour through the Douro River

One of the easiest ways to see the Douro Valley is from a boat trip down the Douro River, which stretches from the Soria Province in Spain to Porto. In fact, wine was traditionally carried down this river in Rabelo boats, long flat boats, recognizable by the long oar protruding from the back. The wine was then stored in Porto wine cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia. Today, many boats make the same journey, this time carrying tourists as part of organized river cruises.

There are short boat trips that depart from Pinhão or longer ones that leave from Porto. Many tours include wine tasting and lunch. The longer tours from Porto typically make stops at some of the smaller villages along the river valley. Click here  to select the right tour for you.

3. Go to a lookout

The Douro Valley is known for its amazing lookout points. São Leonardo da Galafura is one of the most famous lookouts. Here, visitors will be greeted by stunning views of terraced vineyards, rolling hills and the meandering Douro River. There is also a chapel and a picnic area.

São Salvador do Mundo is another breathtaking viewpoint. It’s perched at the top of a hill, and although you can drive up part of the way, you’ll have to walk the rest, but the views are certainly worth the walk. The Valeira Dam, open countryside, lush greenery, rugged slopes and the beautiful Douro River are all visible from the viewpoint.

The Miradouro de Casal de Loivos is another amazing place to soak up the Douro Valley’s natural beauty. It’s located near the village of Casal de Loivos and can be reached by car. From here, viewers can look over Pinhão, the Douro River and several wineries spanning the hillside.

4. Visit the Douro International Natural Park

Immerse yourself in the valley’s untouched nature while hiking in the Douro International Natural Park. This protected area is close to the Spanish border and features a deep river canyon, majestic cliffs, olive trees and many different animal species, including wolves, wild boar, cave bats and Egyptian vultures.

For panoramic views of the canyon, head to one of the park’s many beautiful viewpoints. Penedo Durão is the best viewpoint for birdwatching and Miradouro de Penha das Torres is a great place to see the sunrise. If you’re not sure where to start your adventure to the Douro International Natural Park, book a guided tour, such as this one with Ambieduc .

5. Visit the Douro Museum

Dive into the valley’s history at the Douro Museu or the Museu do Douro. Located in the small town of Régua, the museum is housed in a historic wine warehouse on the riverfront. Exhibits showcase the history of the wine-making industry in the Douro Valley, and its impact on the local community. In addition, you’ll learn about the geographical features of the valley and why these are so well suited for producing wine.

After exploring the museum, enjoy a glass of wine at the on-site wine bar. Visitors receive one complimentary glass of port or table wine with their ticket. For those based in Porto, the museum can be reached by train from the São Bento Station or through a boat tour from Porto.
