15 best tom cruise action movies (& where to stream them).

From Top Gun to the Mission: Impossible franchise, Tom Cruise has made a name for himself as one of Hollywood's most prominent action movie stars.

One of the things that made Tom Cruise such a bankable star is his versatility. He’s appeared in all kinds of movies across various genres. He’s given hilarious turns in comedies like Risky Business and Tropic Thunder , as well as engaging dramatic performances in classics like Rain Man and Born on the Fourth of July .

But arguably the genre that Cruise is most commonly associated with is action. From the aerial acrobatics of Top Gun to the increasingly daring stunts of the Mission: Impossible franchise, Cruise has starred in some awesome action movies over the years.

Updated on May 23rd, 2022 by Mark Birrell:   As per Variety ,  Tom Cruise recently stated at the Cannes Film Festival that he never intends to release his movies straight to streaming, meaning that  Top Gun: Maverick won't be available to stream for some time yet. However, there are plenty of the actor's other great action movies available right now.

Top Gun (1986)

Available to stream on netflix and paramount+.

Maverick’s debut in the first  Top Gun  movie solidified Tom Cruise’s place on the Hollywood A-list and his return to the role after over 35 years has shown that he's still at the top of it.

RELATED: 15 Best Movies Like Top Gun

While its jingoistic message has gained the movie a reputation as thinly veiled propaganda,  Top Gun  is an action movie classic anchored by palpable bromance and dazzling aerial set-pieces courtesy of legendary director Tony Scott.

Mission: Impossible III (2006)

Available to stream on showtime.

A decade after the original movie wowed audiences, Cruise brought on the then-freshman film director–and now renowned reboot maestro–J.J. Abrams to helm the  Mission: Impossible franchise's third installment. Abrams then stayed on as a producer for the following sequels, with this entry sowing the seeds of what the   movies are today.

Though it may not contain a death-defying centerpiece like later  Mission: Impossible  sequels, the action never stops flowing in this threequel and Philip Seymour Hoffman's Owen Davian is one of the best villains in the  Mission: Impossible  franchise .

Oblivion (2013)

Available to stream on hbo max.

A stylish sci-fi action thriller in the vein of classics like  Logan's Run ,  Oblivion   was the first collaboration between Tom Cruise and director Joseph Kosinski, with whom Cruise would reunite for  Top Gun: Maverick .

Top Gun  fans will find plenty of aerial action in the movie, but it's really the slick and detailed designs of the post-apocalyptic world that Cruise's character inhabits that are the main selling point.

War of the Worlds (2005)

Though a far cry from an alien invasion blockbuster like Independence Day , Steven Spielberg's adaptation of H.G. Wells' seminal sci-fi story is bursting with huge action spectacle.

Despite his character not being an action hero by any means, Cruise plays perfectly into his star persona as a struggling divorced dad trying to protect his kids in the midst of a global attack by a technologically superior species. Cruise's character may be more of a spectator to the action rather than a participant in it but the grounded perspective makes scenes like the tripod's first appearance simply unforgettable.

The Last Samurai (2003)

Available to stream on netflix.

This period epic, whilst not without its romanticized depictions of its subject matter, is a highly-regarded entry in Tom Cruise's list of action movies. Set in Japan in the late 19th century, the film follows Cruise's haunted and bitter former soldier as he's placed in the middle of a samurai rebellion.

RELATED:  Tom Cruise's 10 Best Movies, According To Ranker

The Last Samurai was nominated for 4 Oscars, including Best Supporting Actor for Cruise's main co-star, Ken Watanabe. However, the whole cast gives noteworthy performances, with Cruise fully leaning into a violent samurai movie aesthetic.

Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015)

Available to stream on fubotv and paramount+.

The fifth  Mission: Impossible  movie introduced a SPECTRE-like organization to rival the heroes' superheroic skills and a Blofeld-like mastermind to become the movie-series' first recurring villain, with writer and director Christopher McQuarrie going on to become the franchise's first recurring director also.

As  Rogue Nation   delivers its signature death-defying stunt in the opening scene, which features Cruise attached to the side of a real jet plane as it takes off, the movie is mostly a slightly more grounded affair than the other sequels in the franchise but nevertheless has nailbiting tension throughout and one of the best car chases of the 2010s .

Jack Reacher (2012)

Available to stream on amazon prime video and paramount+.

Before Christopher McQuarrie took over the Mission: Impossible franchise, he directed Cruise as the title character in Jack Reacher . Based on One Shot , the ninth book in Lee Child’s Reacher series, Jack Reacher follows its eponymous vigilante’s investigation into a former military sniper who shot a seemingly random group of people in broad daylight.

Even the negative reviews of Jack Reacher noted that Cruise gives an affable turn and that the action sequences, like the car chase, are wildly entertaining.

Knight And Day (2010)

Available to stream on amc+ and fubotv.

A blend of action thriller and romantic comedy, Knight and Day stars Cruise as a secret agent on a deadly mission and Cameron Diaz as a tourist who gets unwittingly swept up in his adventures.

The MacGuffin-driven plot can get a little confusing, but the movie is elevated by thrilling large-scale action scenes and spectacular chemistry between Cruise and Diaz.

Mission: Impossible (1996)

Available to stream on pluto tv and paramount+.

The sequels to Mission: Impossible have become all-out action extravaganzas. Like the Fast & Furious series, it’s an exercise in one-upmanship as each movie sets out to top the spectacle of the last. But the original 1996 film directed by Brian De Palma was a slick and semi-grounded spy thriller.

More in line with the tone of the original TV series, the first Mission: Impossible movie revolves around meticulously planned espionage operations. Ethan Hunt dangling from the ceiling of a high-security vault is one of the most iconic movie moments of all time.

American Made (2017)

Available to stream on fubotv.

It’s rare that a biopic falls into the category of action, but Doug Liman’s American Made has shootouts, police raids, and crash landings. It tells the outrageous life story of Barry Seal, a pilot who simultaneously worked for the CIA and Pablo Escobar.

Cruise gives a charming and hysterically funny turn as Seal, while Liman conceived, shot, and edited the movie in the fast-paced, rapid-cutting, style of Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas .

Edge Of Tomorrow (2014)

Available to rent on amazon prime video.

Much like the slasher movie  Happy Death Day , Doug Liman's earlier collaboration with Tom Cruise,  Edge of Tomorrow , incorporates another genre into the Groundhog Day “time loop” concept. Set in a future in which humanity is at war with alien invaders, Edge of Tomorrow sees Cruise’s soldier living the same day over and over again.

Based on Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s All You Need is Kill , Edge of Tomorrow is one of the most acclaimed sci-fi action thrillers of recent years though fans are still waiting for the sequel.

Collateral (2004)

Available to stream on hbo max.

Directed by Michael Mann, Collateral is a riveting LA-set noir film and a fascinating two-hander about the relationship between two diametrically opposed characters. Jamie Foxx plays an everyman taxi driver and Cruise plays a ruthless hitman who hires him to transport him to jobs across the city on one fateful night.

As usual, Mann brings sleek cinematic style to the proceedings and the tangible on-screen chemistry shared by Foxx and Cruise keeps their characters’ dynamic compelling.

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011)

Though the first three Mission: Impossible  films were successful, Brad Bird's  Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol  was somewhat of a revamp for the franchise. This time, IMF operative Ethan Hunt is forced to go off the grid in his pursuit of a nuclear extremist.

RELATED:  Tom Cruise's 10 Most Iconic Movie Quotes

The movie’s central set-piece, in which Hunt hangs off the facade of the Burj Khalifa, became one of the all-time great IMAX movie moments, still packing a punch on the smallest of screens. It's filled with breathtaking action sequences, like a foot chase through a sandstorm and a heist in the Kremlin.

Minority Report (2002)

Available to rent on apple tv.

Steven Spielberg’s Minority Report is both a high-stakes crime thriller and a thought-provoking sci-fi epic. Set in a dystopian future in which the police can predict crimes before they take place, Tom Cruise’s top cop is accused of a murder he has yet to commit.

With its ambiguous morals and futuristic portrayal of law enforcement, Minority Report is a quintessential sci-fi noir in the same fascinating category as fellow Philip K. Dick adaptation Blade Runner .

Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018)

Available to stream on paramount+.

Acclaimed as one of the greatest action movies ever made by critics, Mission: Impossible – Fallout is by far the most thrilling, action-packed entry in the franchise so far.

Cruise stepped it up by doing death-defying stunts in practically every scene of Fallout . He dangled from a helicopter, jumped out of a plane, and rode a motorcycle the wrong way around the Arc de Triomphe. The movie's commitment to largely-in-camera spectacle puts it in a class above most big-budget Hollywood action movies of the past decade.

Paramount+: Every Tom Cruise Movie That's Currently Streaming

By Daniel S. Levine - June 5, 2022 09:30 pm EDT

Tom Cruise helped reinvigorate the box office again  this weekend thanks to the eye-popping success of Top Gun: Maverick . Cruise is now 40 years into his career as a superstar, and many of the movies that helped him reach that status are available to stream on Paramount+ . That includes the original Top Gun , which was made for Paramount in 1986.

Maverick   grossed an astonishing $160.5 million in its first four days of release, reports Variety . That is now the biggest Memorial Day debut in history, edging just past Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End , which opened with $153 million. It helps that Maverick earned the widest release in film history, playing at 4,732 North American cinemas.

The new movie also proved how big a star Cruise is overseas. Maverick made $139 million in foreign markets, bringing its international total to over $300 million. Maverick is also the first movie in Cruise's career to make over $100 million in its opening weekend. War of the Worlds earned Cruise's previous biggest opening with a $64 million weekend in 2005. Now that you've satisfied the need... the need for speed, here's a look at the other Cruise movies readily available on Paramount+.

Taps (1981)

Taps is technically Cruise's second movie after he had a cameo role in Endless Love , released a few months earlier. However, Taps features Cruise's first major role as Cadet Captain Alex Dwyer. The movie's true star is Timothy Hutton, who was coming off his success in Ordinary People . Taps was based on a novel by Devery Freeman about military school cadets who take over the school to stop its closure. George C. Scott, Ronny Cox, and Sean Penn also star.

Top Gun (1986)

top-gun-getty-images.jpg

Although Top Gun has been available on other streamers in the past, Paramount made sure to have it available to stream on its own platform ahead of Maverick 's release. While the success of Risky Business (streaming on HBO Max) proved Cruise was a star, Top Gun proved he could also lead a blockbuster. The movie became a phenomenon, so ingrained in pop culture that a sequel could dominate the box office 36 years later.

The Color of Money (1986)

the-color-of-money-getty-images.jpg

While Top Gun was Cruise's big movie of 1986, he also starred in Martin Scorsese's acclaimed sequel to The Hustler , The Color of Money . It is best known today for helping Paul Newman secure his much-delayed Oscar victory. However, Cruise gives an electric performance as the young pool hustler Newman takes under his wing.

Mission: Impossible

mission-impossible-fallout-rotten-tomatoes-score-revealed-20040724.jpg

Five of the six Mission: Impossible movies are available on Paramount+ as of this writing. The only one you won't find there is J.J. Abrams' Mission: Impossible III , which is now on Showtime. The next movie, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One , will be released in 2023.

War of the Worlds (2005)

In 2005, Cruise reunited with Minority Report director Steven Spielberg to star in a new take on H.G. Welles' War of the Worlds . Cruise earned acclaim for his performance in the film, but he has not worked with Spielberg since.

Tropic Thunder (2008)

Anyone who saw Ben Stiller's Tropic Thunder when it came out can remember the revelation at the end of the movie that Cruise played the obnoxious studio executive. His performance as Les Grossman is one of the many parts of Tropic Thunder that feel very different over a decade after its release. The character was loosely inspired by Scott Rudin , whose poor treatment of people and temper in real life were played for jokes here. Last year, several employees spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about his abusive behavior, which eventually led to him stepping back from his stage and screen productions.

Jack Reacher (2012)

In the 2010s, Cruise appeared to be searching desperately for another franchise with Jack Reacher and later The Mummy . Although author Lee Child wrote dozens of novels about Jack Reacher, Cruise only wound up making two movies, Jack Reacher (2012) and Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (2016). Cruise's casting as Reacher was controversial among the character's fans because he didn't match the character's description. However, Cruise had Child's endorsement in 2012. Eventually, though, Child came around to agree with fans in 2018 that Cruise wasn't right for the part. Alan Ritchson stars as Reacher in the Amazon Prime Video series that debuted in February.

Tom Cruise is genuinely scary as a suave hitman in Michael Mann's slick crime thriller. Jamie Foxx plays a cab driver who unknowingly picks up Cruise's contract killer and agrees to drive him to various locations for a hefty sum. Foxx's Max Durocher soon discovers that the man he knows as Vincent is actually on a killing spree, murdering different targets at each stop.

Mann builds a tense back-and-forth between the two men, making them into worthy adversaries even though Vincent seems to have every advantage. Mann gives Los Angeles at night a gorgeous, otherworldly feel, the perfect backdrop for this battle between the sadistic and the noble.

Before "legacy sequels" were all the rage, Martin Scorsese directed this 25-years-later follow-up to 1961's The Hustler, with Paul Newman returning as pool shark Fast Eddie Felson. Eddie is older but not necessarily wiser, and his love for the game is rekindled when he spots hotshot young player Vincent Lauria (Tom Cruise).

Cruise and Newman have excellent chemistry as two control freaks who develop a wary respect but maintain their rivalry. Scorsese shoots the pool scenes with flair, bringing a dynamic excitement to the many games of nine-ball. The movie is a winning combination of Scorsese's cinematic creativity and the Hollywood charisma of its two stars.

Although it underwhelmed at the box office, Doug Liman's sci-fi action movie has proven worthy of its critical acclaim by building a dedicated following. Tom Cruise plays against his action-hero type as a whiny, self-serving military public affairs officer. He's thrown into the middle of a battle against aliens and finds himself in a time loop, returning to the same point every time he gets killed.

Emily Blunt plays the hardened battlefield sergeant who trains him to harness this unexpected ability. It's a clever, fast-paced, and playful take on a familiar sci-fi concept, with Cruise and Blunt making a perfect team of reluctant allies.

Edge of Tomorrow is available for digital purchase ($9.99+) and rental ($3.99) at Amazon , iTunes , Google Play , Vudu , and other digital outlets.

Author Anne Rice was initially outraged by the casting of Tom Cruise as her popular vampire character Lestat de Lioncourt, but she changed her mind completely after seeing Neil Jordan's film. Cruise may be an unlikely choice to play the decadent, narcissistic Lestat, but he captures the dark hedonism of Rice's vampires perfectly.

Brad Pitt matches him as Lestat's protégé Louis, and Kirsten Dunst gives one of the best-ever child performances as forever-young vampire Claudia. Jordan brings the eroticism and menace of Rice's vampires to life, telling a centuries-spanning story as narrated by Louis to a rapt reporter played by Christian Slater.

Jerry Maguire's catch phrases have been so extensively quoted and recycled that it's easy to forget this movie is more than just a collection of quips. It's a passionate, open-hearted romantic comedy from a master of the form, writer-director Cameron Crowe, and it features one of Tom Cruise's most purely likable performances.

He plays the title character, an idealistic sports agent who leaves his secure job to start his own firm with just one client, NFL wide receiver Rod Tidwell (Cuba Gooding Jr.). Jerry approaches negotiating with the same enthusiasm and honesty that he brings to his romance with single mother Dorothy Boyd (Renee Zellweger).

Tom Cruise is only one part of writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson's sprawling, multi-character epic, but he may be the most memorable part. Cruise was nominated for an Oscar for his portrayal of chauvinistic motivational speaker Frank T.J. Mackey, who's long estranged from his father Earl (Jason Robards).

Frank's arc of reconciling his feelings about his father ties into the movie's overall theme of redemption and forgiveness, which plays out in multiple overlapping storylines. The stellar cast also includes Julianne Moore, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and William H. Macy, but even among such amazing talent, Cruise stands out.

The Mission: Impossible movies have become an all-consuming project for Tom Cruise in recent years, and they remain one of the most satisfying blockbuster franchises in Hollywood. The series reached an apex with this fourth movie, directed by animation veteran Brad Bird.

Bird brings an animator's anything-goes approach to the movie's massive set pieces, including Cruise's Ethan Hunt climbing the side of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, still one of the greatest stunts ever captured onscreen. He also puts together a top-notch team to support Cruise, adding Paula Patton and Jeremy Renner as Ethan's fellow covert agents, and promoting Simon Pegg in what would become a key franchise role.

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol is streaming on  Paramount+ ($4.99+ per month after a seven-day free trial).

A sci-fi movie focused as much on creative design and heady ideas as it is on action, Oblivion stars Tom Cruise as one of the last people left on Earth, ostensibly guarding the last remnants of human civilization following a deadly alien invasion. Cruise's Jack Harper and his partner Victoria Olson (Andrea Riseborough) start to realize that something isn't right about their supposed mission to repair essential technology before joining the human race's migration into space.

Oblivion is full of plot twists that don't always make sense, but Cruise convincingly plays every emotional reaction. He pulls the audience along on this sleek, mind-bending future journey.

Oblivion is available for digital purchase ($11.99+) and rental ($3.99) at Amazon , iTunes , Google Play , Vudu , and other digital outlets.

Anyone who only knows Risky Business from the often-parodied moment of Tom Cruise dancing in his underwear may be surprised to discover an emotionally engaging and sometimes dark coming-of-age dramedy. It's a bit like a cross between Ferris Bueller's Day Off and The Graduate, with Cruise as a recent high school graduate who finds a connection with a prostitute played by Rebecca De Mornay.

It features the requisite crazy parties and occasionally crass jokes of an '80s teen comedy, but that's balanced by a strong undercurrent of melancholy. Cruise captures the emptiness of a privileged teen staring into a predetermined future that he starts to realize may be meaningless.

Risky Business is streaming on Netflix ($9.99+ per month) and  HBO Max ($9.99+ per month).

Tom Cruise is probably not the first name that would come to mind to play a German officer during World War II, but the filmmakers behind Valkyrie pull it off. They cast Cruise and actors of various nationalities as the members of a secret German organization that conspired to assassinate Adolf Hitler, and nearly succeeded.

Set in the waning days of the war, Valkyrie generates plenty of suspense, even though anyone watching almost certainly already knows the outcome. It's a fascinating history lesson, a taut thriller, and a true ensemble piece. Cruise plays the man in charge of the plan, but he makes room for the likes of Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, and Kenneth Branagh, all working toward the same goal.

Valkyrie is available for digital purchase ($12.99+) and rental ($3.99) at Amazon , iTunes , Google Play , Vudu , and other digital outlets.

Magnolia (1999)

On a seemingly random day in the San Fernando Valley, a dying father, a young wife, a famous lost son, a male caregiver, a boy genius, a police officer in love, an ex-boy genius, an estranged daughter and a game show host will all play a part in a stunning variety of stories, but one story. Paul Thomas Anderson, the director, creates a complicated story that delves into the complexity of love, regret, and the mysterious coincidences that connect us all. Tom Cruise and the rest of the cast give outstanding performances that bring their various roles to life.

  • Cast: Tom Cruise, Jason Robards, Julianne Moore
  • Director: Paul Thomas Anderson

Edge of Tomorrow (2014)

Maj. William Cage, masterfully portrayed by Tom Cruise, undergoes a change when Earth is threatened by an unstoppable alien force. The idea of a time loop gives the usual alien invasion plot a distinctive twist.

Although Cruise’s character begins off as a rookie officer, the movie is really fascinating because of how he develops. In her role as his courageous ally, Emily Blunt excels. Their on-screen chemistry is explosive, and their battle against the aliens is thrilling and emotionally gripping.

Edge of Tomorrow (2014)

The Last Samurai (2003)

A stunning voyage that immerses you in the collision of civilizations and the conflict between tradition and development is “The Last Samurai” (2003). Capt. Nathan Algren is compellingly portrayed by Tom Cruise as he transforms from a soldier who has lost hope to a person who has a strong affinity for the Samurai way of life.

The film’s breathtaking scenery and huge battle scenes are visually pleasing, and Ken Watanabe’s portrayal of Katsumoto gives the narrative depth and realism.

A Few Good Men (1992)

Tom Cruise shines as Lt. Daniel Kaffee, a military lawyer forced to confront the military establishment’s dark secrets. Lt. Cdr. JoAnne Galloway, Kaffee’s opponent, is convincingly played by Demi Moore.

Col. Nathan R. Jessep, played by Jack Nicholson, is the star of the movie. A classic in motion pictures is Nicholson’s famous “You can’t handle the truth!” line. The courtroom moments are electrified by the conflict between Cruise and Nicholson.

A Few Good Men (1992)

  • IMDb rating: 7.7/10
  • Genre: Drama, Thriller
  • Runtime: 2h 18m
  • Cast: Tom Cruise, Jack Nicholson, Demi Moore
  • Director: Rob Reiner

Interview With The Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles (1994)

The 1994 movie “Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles” is a captivating and sinisterly seductive story about immortality and ethical dilemmas. This movie impressed me as a fan of the vampire subgenre. Lestat is portrayed by Tom Cruise in a menacing yet charismatic way, and Louis is played by Brad Pitt with a melancholy elegance. Claudia, a teenage vampire, is played hauntingly well by Kirsten Dunst. By creating an evocative and visually stunning universe, director Neil Jordan brings Anne Rice’s book to life.

  • IMDb rating: 7.5/10
  • Genre: Drama, Fantasy, Horror
  • Runtime: 2h 3m
  • Cast: Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Antonio Banderas
  • Director: Neil Jordan

Eyes Wide Shut (1999)

The 1999 film “Eyes Wide Shut” takes viewers on a bizarre trip into the depths of human passion and desire. Tom Cruise’s portrayal of Dr. Bill Hartford as he navigates the strange world of sexual discovery is eerily vivid. In her role as Alice, Bill’s wife, Nicole Kidman brings light to the movie. With a distinctive fusion of sensuality and uneasiness, the movie examines themes of envy, temptation, and the hidden aspects of desire.

Eyes Wide Shut (1999)

  • Genre: Drama, Mystery, Thriller
  • Runtime: 2h 39m

Jerry Maguire (1996)

Jerry, a sports agent who reevaluates his life and work, is brilliantly portrayed by Tom Cruise. His change from a materialistic success-chaser to someone who values real connections is expertly depicted in the movie. The relationship between Cruise and Renée Zellweger, who plays Dorothy Boyd, is believable and gives the narrative dimension. Rod Tidwell is portrayed by Cuba Gooding Jr. in a hilarious and heartfelt way.

The storyline directed by Cameron Crowe creates the ideal harmony between comedic and moving scenes. The movie’s catchphrases, such as “Show me the money!” have become ingrained in popular culture.

Mission: Impossible (1996)

“Mission: Impossible” from 1996 remains an iconic action thriller that’s aged like fine wine. Tom Cruise shines as Ethan Hunt, a skilled operative wrongfully accused of murder. One memorable incident is the risky break-in at the CIA building. The film’s iconic theme song and direction by Brian De Palma round out the experience. A timeless classic, “Mission: Impossible” raised the bar for the franchise.

Risky Business (1983)

A masterpiece of cinema, “Risky Business” (1983), expertly combines comedy, drama, and Tom Cruise’s charismatic youth. As Joel Goodsen, Cruise perfectly embodies the idea of a protected adolescent who, while his parents are away, ventures into the unknown. The movie’s examination of Joel’s development from naiveté to assurance is both humorous and thought-provoking. “Risky Business” is a throwback to the 1980s that includes recollections and a famous dancing scene.

Risky Business (1983)

  • IMDb rating: 6.8/10
  • Genre: Comedy, Crime, Drama

Top Gun Maverick

“ Top Gun: Maverick ” is about to fly into your living room — just in time for the holidays.

Tom Cruise’s hit sequel will finally hit streaming when it debuts on Paramount+ on December 22 in the U.S., Canada, Australia, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Italy and other markets, the U.K. and Latin America. It will also start streaming on Epix (which will be renamed MGM+ in January) on the same day.

The film has even attracted awards buzz through the fall season, with Variety ranking the sequel as a favorite for a best picture Oscar nomination.

The “Top Gun” sequel picks up with Cruise’s Pete “Maverick” Mitchell working as a test pilot, fighting to stay airborne as the military looks to ground him. A new threat brings the ace back to Top Gun, where he works to train a new generation of pilots for a nigh impossible mission. Along with Cruise, the film stars Tom Cruise, Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, Charles Parnell, Bashir Salahuddin, Monica Barbaro, Jay Ellis, Danny Ramirez, Greg Tarzan Davis with Ed Harris and Val Kilmer.

“If the flying scenes here blow your mind, it’s because a great many of them are the real deal, putting audiences right there in the cockpit alongside a cast who learned to pilot for their parts,” Variety chief film critic Peter Debruge wrote in his glowing review of the film.

As for Epix/MGM+, the hybrid linear cabler continues to hold a deal for first-run pay windows of MGM films such as the latest James Bond entry “No Time to Die,” “House of Gucci” and “Licorice Pizza,” as well as output from Paramount (including “Top Gun: Maverick”), Blumhouse and other studios.

Rear Admiral : Maverick. Thirty-plus years of service. Combat medals. Citations. Only man to shoot down three enemy planes in the last 40 years.

[Cain looks through pages of Maverick's records]

Rear Admiral : 'Distinguished.' 'Distinguished.' 'Distinguished.' Yet you can't get a promotion, you won't retire, and despite your best efforts, you refuse to die. You should be at least a two-star admiral by now, if not a senator. Yet here you are: Captain. Why is that?

Maverick : It's one of life's mysteries, sir.

Rear Admiral : This isn't a joke. I asked you a question.

Maverick : I'm where I belong, sir.

Rear Admiral : Well, the navy doesn't see it that way. Not anymore.

Rear Admiral : These planes you've been testing, Captain, one day, sooner or later, they won't need pilots at all. Pilots that need to sleep, eat, take a piss. Pilots that disobey orders. All you did was buy some time for those men out there. The future is coming, and you're not in it.

[Cain faces the officer by the door]

Rear Admiral : Escort this man off the base. Take him to his quarters. Wait with him while he packs his gear. I want him on the road to North Island within the hour.

[surprised look on Maverick's face]

Maverick : North Island, sir?

Rear Admiral : Call came in with impeccable timing, right as I was driving here to ground your ass once and for all. It galls me to say it, but... for reasons known only to the Almighty and your guardian angel, you've been called back to Top Gun.

Maverick : Sir?

Rear Admiral : You are dismissed, Captain.

[Maverick proceeds to leave Cain's office]

Rear Admiral : The end is inevitable, Maverick. Your kind is headed for extinction.

[Maverick turns around]

Maverick : Maybe so, sir. But not today.

Best Tom Cruise Movies And Where To Watch Them

Tom Cruise can be easily considered a rather odd man – remember when he jumped up and down on Oprah’s couch yelling about how much he loved Katie Holmes? Or the fact he’s a devout Scientologist? All that aside, there’s no denying that Cruise is an incredible actor.

So far, Cruise has been nominated for three Best Actor awards at the Oscars and has been a part of some truly iconic films – including Top Gun and its sequel, Top Gun: Maverick .

If you want to have a Cruise movie marathon, these are the best Tom Cruise movies as well as what streaming platforms they’re available on:

Jerry Maguire

tom cruise movies streaming

7.3 IMDb score, stars Tom Cruise, Cuba Gooding Jr. & Renée Zellweger, Comedy, Drama & Romance, released in 1996

Jerry Maguire has it all; a beautiful fiancée and a successful career as a sports agent. However, after having a crisis of conscience, Maguire gets himself fired. Forced to start over with only one client, an egotistical football player, Maguire now faces hardships he’s never experienced before.

Jerry Maguire was nominated for five Academy Awards – including Best Picture – and is an absolute must-watch when it comes to Tom Cruise.

Where To Watch: Binge & Foxtel Now.

Mission: Impossible

tom cruise movies streaming

7.1 IMDb score, stars Tom Cruise & Jon Voight, Action, Adventure & Thriller, released in 1996

During a covert operation that goes wrong, US agent Ethan Hunt’s mentor is killed, leaving Ethan (played by Cruise) as the prime suspect. Ethan then recruits two former agents to help him break into the CIA to obtain the files that’ll prove his innocence.

Mission: Impossible is action-packed and started the iconic Mission Impossible franchise – that’s still going strong – making it a must-watch.

Where To Watch: Stan, Binge, Amazon Prime Video , Paramount+ & Foxtel Now.

tom cruise movies streaming

8.0 IMDb score, stars Tom Cruise & Dustin Hoffman, Drama, released in 1988

Cruise’s character, Charlie Babbit is a spoiled and self-centred young man who learns that his estranged father left a huge inheritance to someone other than him. Charlie soon learns that that someone is a brother he never knew of, who suffers from autism.

Both Cruise and Hoffman turn in incredible performances in this moving film; everyone should definitely see Rain Man at least once in their life.

Where To Watch: Rent or Buy on Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video AU, Google Play, Microsoft Store & Youtube.

Risky Business

tom cruise movies streaming

6.8 IMDb score, stars Tom Cruise, Comedy, Crime & Drama, released 1983

In case you didn’t know, the iconic scene – that’s been parodied to death – of a young man sliding along wooden floors and singing along to Old Time Rock & Roll wearing nothing but undies, socks, and a shirt is from Risky Business . Cruise plays a teenager who has nothing but fun while his parents are out of town.

This is a great comedy and will definitely give you a few chuckles.

Where To Watch: Stan , Binge, Paramount+ & Foxtel Now.

Rock of Ages

tom cruise movies streaming

5.9 IMDb score, stars Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin, Russell Brand, Bryan Cranston, Paul Giamatti & Catherine Zeta-Jones, Comedy, Drama & Musical, released in 2012

Stacee Jaxx in Rock of Ages is Cruise’s best film role to date, and this is the hill I’ll die on. Yes, musicals aren’t for everyone but Rock of Ages is so fun to watch and Cruise is SO good as Jaxx, even musical-haters will enjoy this film.

Please trust me and just give Rock of Ages a go if you’re a Cruise fan.

Where To Watch: Paramount+.

tom cruise movies streaming

6.9 IMDb score, stars Tom Cruise, Tim Robbins & Val Kilmer, Action & Drama, released in 1986

Can you really have a list of Tom Cruise’s best films without Top Gun on it? While Top Gun is not the best or most nuanced film in the world, it’s still extremely enjoyable to watch (especially for action film fans) and it cemented Cruise as a Hollywood star.

Top Gun is iconic for a reason, so if you haven’t seen it before, do so immediately.

Where To Watch: Stan, Binge, Paramount+ & Foxtel Now.

Tropic Thunder

tom cruise movies streaming

7.0 IMDb score, stars Tom Cruise, Ben Stiller, Jack Black & Robert Downey Jr., Comedy, Action & War, released in 2008

Okay, I’ll admit that Cruise does not have a huge role in Tropic Thunder but for those rare moments when he does appear, he’s a total scene-stealer. Cruise’s role, Les Grossman, is vastly different from all other roles Cruise has ever taken on and it’s definitely one of his best-ever roles.

Plus, Tropic Thunder is still rather funny – even if some jokes haven’t aged super well – making it a film you should definitely add to your binge list.

Where To Watch: Stan, Amazon Prime Video & Foxtel Now.

3 best Tom Cruise movies on Netflix to watch (and 2 to skip)

By bryce olin | oct 14, 2023.

NEW YORK, NY - DECEMBER 19: Tom Cruise attends the "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol" U.S. premiere at the Ziegfeld Theatre on December 19, 2011 in New York City. (Photo by Donna Ward/Getty Images)

If you’re a big fan of Tom Cruise, it’s a great time to have a Netflix subscription. There are so many Tom Cruise movies on Netflix in October 2023. The film industry veteran has been in 44 movies. While most of Cruise’s movies are unavailable to stream on Netflix, there are at least half a dozen worth watching.

To help you find the perfect movie to watch on Netflix tonight, we shared a list of three recommendations for good Tom Cruise movies to watch. We also shared two of Cruise’s movies that probably aren’t worth your time tonight and that you should skip.

Let’s get the list started with one of my favorite movies starring Cruise, Collateral.

Verdict: Watch

Collateral is one of the best movies on Netflix right now, and it has been for a while. Unfortunately, Collateral is leaving Netflix on Oct. 31, 2023, so you better watch the movie soon!

The movie tells the story of Max (Jamie Foxx), a taxi driver who begins driving around a man, Vincent (Tom Cruise), for the night. Max quickly realizes Vincent is a hitman and is hired to drive him around Los Angeles for the night.

If you’re into action thrillers, you can’t go wrong with Collateral on Netflix.

  • Release Year: 2004
  • Director: Michael Mann
  • Cast: Tom Cruise, Jamie Foxx, Jada Pinkett Smith, Mark Ruffalo, Peter Berg, and Bruce McGill
  • Watch on Netflix: Collateral

Verdict: Skip

The Mummy starring Tom Cruise seemed like a good idea, but unfortunately, it’s one of Cruise’s worst movies in his career. It’s a reboot of the original Mummy movies starring Brendan Frasier, and it’s just not a good movie.

The Mummy tells the story of treasure hunter Nick Morton (Tom Cruise) who accidentally awakens the spirit of Ahmanet, an ancient Egyptian princess who is back for revenge.

The Mummy was just added to Netflix in October 2023, so it might look like it’s a popular new movie to watch on the streaming service, but don’t be fooled. The Mummy is a skip!

  • Release Year: 2017
  • Director: Alex Kurtzman
  • Cast: Tom Cruise, Annabelle Wallis, Sofia Boutella, Jake Johnson, Courtney B. Vance, Marwan Kenzari, and Russell Crowe
  • Watch on Netflix: The Mummy

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol

Verdict: Watch

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol is now streaming on Netflix, and it’s definitely a must-watch for Cruise fans. It’s easily one of the best action movies on Netflix right now.

Ghost Protocol is the fourth Mission: Impossible movie, and it follows Ethan Hunt’s journey after he and others close to him are framed for a bombing at the Kremlin. Hunt and his team try to prove their innocence and stay alive while being pursued by other skilled agents.

The first four Mission: Impossible movies are streaming on Netflix right now. There’s no doubt Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol is the best of the bunch, but it’s the perfect time for a Mission: Impossible marathon on Netflix right now.

  • Release Year: 2011
  • Director: Brad Bird
  • Cast: Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, and Paula Patton
  • Watch on Netflix: Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol

War of the Worlds

War of the Worlds is based on H. G. Wells’ novel of the same name. The action film tells the story of an alien invasion of Earth. Ray (Tom Cruise), a father, tries to protect his two children, Rachel (Dakota Fanning) and Robbie (Justin Chatwin) from the alien invaders who are killing and rounding up humans.

Overall, War of the Worlds is not that bad of a movie, in my opinion. Cruise and Fanning deliver excellent performances, but it’s probably not a movie that you really want to watch right now. For that reason, it’s a skip!

  • Release Year: 2005
  • Director: Steven Spielberg
  • Cast: Tom Cruise, Dakota Fanning, Miranda Otto, Tim Robbins, and Justin Chatwin
  • Watch on Netflix: War of the Worlds

American Made

American Made is one of the most popular movies on Netflix during the fall of 2023, which is surprising because the movie is more than five years old. The film stars Cruise as a pilot, Barry Seal, who is working for the CIA and making trips to Central and South America when he begins smuggling drugs for Pablo Escobar and the Medellin Cartel during the 1980s. Later, Seal gets caught and is forced to become an informant for the DEA to save himself.

You’ve seen a lot of shows and movies like American Made, and many of them are available to stream on Netflix. If you’re interested in American Made and like the movie, we highly recommend all five seasons of Narcos on Netflix.

American Made also has an incredible cast with Domnhall Gleeson, Jesse Plemons, and Sarah Wright Olsen rounding out the cast. American Made is also on the list of the best movies on Netflix right now.

  • Release Year: 2017
  • Cast: Tom Cruise, Domhnall Gleeson, Sarah Wright Olsen, Jesse Plemons, and Caleb Landry Jones
  • Watch on Netflix: American Made

That’s the list of the best Tom Cruise movies on Netflix right now! We’ll update the list as more Cruise movies are added to Netflix.

Netflix to add Tom Cruise blockbuster with 99% on Rotten Tomatoes this month

Aviators at the ready

Top Gun: Maverick

QUICK SUMMARY

Netflix is adding the long-awaited sequel Top Gun: Maverick to its platform. The Tom Cruise film will be available from March 22nd.

It may be the weekend of the Oscars but sometimes you can have your fill of arthouse movies and just want to watch something spectacular instead. There's nothing wrong with that, but you will have to wait just a little longer to watch one of the biggest movies in years at home.

On March 22nd, Netflix is entering the danger zone, that's right, Top Gun: Maverick will hit the streaming service. It's no indie darling but that's not stopped it from universal acclaim with a stellar 99% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes and 96% critic score. That's a heck of an achievement and you'll soon be able to catch it on another of the best streaming services (it's already available on Paramount Plus ).

A follow-up 36 years in the making, Top Gun: Maverick sees Tom Cruise's peerless pilot (who looks almost the exact same) return. Now he's teaching the next generation of aces how to be heroes, including the son of his late former wingman Goose (Miles Teller) - I'm not crying, you are. Rooster (his callsign) is a capable pilot with lofty career goals, but Maverick made a promise to the boy's mother that he wouldn't let him fly, putting him in a difficult position.

But what you really want to know are two things, is the flying epic? And is there a volleyball scene? The answer to both is an emphatic yes. Tom Cruise wasn't allowed to fly the jets himself (although he probably could) but the stunts are real, with absolutely minimal CGI.

Making a sequel to one of the most famous movies of all time is no small task, but Maverick is an excellent blend of paying homage to the original (with some familiar faces popping up) and telling its own story. Director Joseph Kosinski has remarkably done it twice, also leading Tron:Legacy the sequel to 80's classic Tron .

If you need something to fill the time until the 22nd then why not try something a bit more unusual with Adam Sandler's Spider-infused sci-fi , also on Netflix ?

One Of Tom Cruise’s Best Movies Is Now Streaming For Free

One of Tom Cruise's best movies is now streaming for free and it well worth a watch if you've never seen it before.

Tom Cruise

It’s been 35 years since Top Gun first launched Tom Cruise to the top of the Hollywood A-list, and he’s largely remained there for so long by essentially playing himself over and over. The actor knows audiences love to see him headline broad spectacle-driven blockbusters that feature his signature brand of daredevil risk-taking, and it’s a formula that’s served him incredibly well over the decades.

However, when Cruise ventures outside of his action hero wheelhouse, he tends to deliver the best work of his career. He’s got three Academy Award nominations to his name for going firmly against his usual grain in Born on the Fourth of July , Jerry Maguire and Magnolia , while he buried himself under heavy prosthetics to steal every scene of Tropic Thunder he was in.

tom cruise collateral

One thing the 58 year-old hardly ever does, though, is play the bad guy, but Michael Mann’s 2004 noir thriller Collateral proved that he was unsurprisingly great at that as well. Cruise sports gray hair and a mean streak as hired killer Vincent, who enters a reluctant partnership with Jamie Foxx’s cabbie Max as he enlists the driver’s services to ferry him from one hit to the next, with the police and FBI soon ending up hot on their tail.

Foxx may have landed an Oscar nod for Best Supporting Actor, but Tom Cruise is every bit as good in the type of role you’d never expect him to play, and it’s nothing short of a travesty that he’s shown no interest in sinking his teeth into another villainous turn in the seventeen years since. Collateral is now streaming for free on IMDb TV, and it’s well worth checking out if you can handle the ad interruptions that come with not having to pay to watch.

From heartbreaking monologues to death-defying stunts, Cruise has been lighting up the big screen since he slid across the floor in Risky Business . At 61, Cruise has no plans of slowing down, with Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two hitting theaters in 2025.

7. Days of Thunder (1990)

6. the firm (1993), 5. eyes wide shut (1999), 4. a few good men (1992), 3. magnolia (1999), 2. mission: impossible (1996), 1. jerry maguire (1996).

Cruise went from budding star to acting icon in the 1990s as he starred in nine films from 1990-1999. Several of Cruise’s films during the 1990s feature some of the actor’s finest work, and he even scored two Oscar nominations. From charming dramedies to action tentpoles, Cruise did it all in the 1990s. Below, we rank Cruise’s seven best films of the decade.

Cruise mastered playing the young, cocky hotshot in Top Gun . Cole Trickle falls under the same archetype in Days of Thunder . After dominating in open-wheel racing, Cole jumps to NASCAR, where he quickly forms a rivalry with veteran champion Rowdy Burns (Michael Rooker). After a crash sidelines them with injuries, Cole and Rowdy put their differences aside and become friends. Cole also romances Dr. Claire Lewicki, played by Cruise’s future wife (now ex-wife) Nicole Kidman.

  • 10 best anime movies of the 1990s
  • 5 Tom Cruise movies you need to watch in August

Days of Thunder is not as good as Top Gun , but it’s still a fun sports movie with good racing sequences and a flashy Cruise performance. Fun fact: Days of Thunder is Cruise’s only writing credit. Cruise received a story credit along with Robert Towne, the Academy Award-winning screenwriter.

Stream Days of Thunder on Paramount+ .

Considering he’s played lawyers in multiple movies, I wonder if Cruise ever wanted to seek a career in law if acting didn’t work out. Luckily for Cruise, he chose the right profession. In The Firm , Cruise plays Mitch McDeere, a promising Harvard Law School graduate who takes a job with a prestigious firm in Memphis. The firm introduces Mitch to a life of wealth and power. However, the long hours strain his marriage with his wife, Abby (Jeanne Tripplehorn).

Mitch accidentally discovers the firm’s illegal activities, from money laundering to tax fraud and murder. Approached by the FBI to flip on his associates, Mitch knows he’s a dead man if he helps the authorities. Cruise’s fiery persona and star power are a winning combination in Sydney Pollack’s cat-and-mouse legal thriller. The Firm also inspired Cruise’s lifelong mission to become an elite runner .

Looking at how Cruise gravitated toward action in the 21st century, Eyes Wide Shut was one of the actor’s biggest risks. Stanley Kubrick’s final film stars Cruise as Bill Harford, a doctor who is stunned to learn that his wife, Alice (Nicole Kidman), has sexual fantasies about sleeping with other men. Jealous, Bill sets out to look for a sexual encounter.

Bill meets with his old friend, Nick Nightingale (Todd Field), and learns about a masked sex party hosted by a secret society. After attending one of the parties, Bill realizes he’s in danger, leading him to rethink his intentions. Unfortunately for Cruise and Kidman, their real-life marriage ended a few years after this film, and when you read about the difficult production , it’s easy to speculate that it may have played a part. However, Eyes Wide Shut remains one of Cruise’s most vulnerable performances.

Rent Eyes Wide Shut  on Prime Video , YouTube , Apple , or Google .

Cruise starred as a JAG attorney in A Few Good Men. In the film directed by Rob Reiner and based on a script by Aaron Sorkin, Cruise plays Lieutenant Daniel Kaffee, a lawyer tasked with defending two U.S. Marines accused of murdering another Marine on Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba. Kaffee assembles a team, including Lt. Cdr. JoAnne Galloway (Demi Moore), to mount a defense and prove the Marines were carrying out an order from a superior officer.

Cruise’s courtroom scenes are some of his finest acting moments. He brings the proper amount of intensity and ferocity to the courtroom, leading to the film’s climatic scene between Kaffee and Col. Nathan R. Jessup, played by Jack Nicholson . Cruise versus Nicholson in a courtroom , what’s better than that?

Rent A Few Good Men  on Prime Video , YouTube , Apple , or Google .

Magnolia has a lot of problems, but Cruise isn’t one of them. While Cruise was making Eyes Wide Shut , director Paul Thomas Anderson  met with Cruise to discuss working together on a future film. That film became Magnolia , with Cruise starring as Frank T.J. Mackey, a conceited motivational speaker and dating expert who teaches people that life is about “what you take.”

While the misogynistic speeches show Cruise’s comedic chops, the single best scene of his career is when Frank breaks down and weeps in front of his dying father. How the Academy watched that scene and didn’t award Cruise Best Supporting Actor is beyond me.

Stream Magnolia on Prime Video .

The role that has come to define Cruise for the last three decades is Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible . Ethan is an elite agent who works for the Impossible Mission Force (IMF), the secret government agency called upon for dangerous assignments. In Mission: Impossible , a failed mission that results in the death of several IMF agents forces Ethan to go on the run as the government deems him the prime suspect.

Forced to clear his name, Ethan assembles a new team to infiltrate the CIA building and steal an electronic list that could prove his innocence. By 1996, Cruise mostly did dramas with a few action films mixed in. However, the success of Mission: Impossible kicked off Cruise’s run as a global action star who is not afraid to push himself to the absolute limit, even if that means driving a motorcycle off a cliff.

Stream Mission: Impossible on Paramount+ or Prime Video .

Jerry Maguire is Cruise’s magnum opus. Everything we love about Cruise, from his natural charisma and infectious smile to his exuberant energy and undying passion, is channeled into the football dramedy Jerry Maguire . Written and directed by Cameron Crowe, Jerry Maguire stars Cruise as a sports agent who quits his high-profile agency to start his own management firm, so he can focus on stronger relationships with fewer clients.

Jerry’s only client is Rod Tidwell (Cuba Gooding Jr.), a wide receiver in the NFL who wants Jerry to “show him the money.” Jerry’s only employee is Dorothy Boyd (Renee Zellweger), a single mother and eventual love interest. Cruise turns his movie star charm up to 10 in Jerry Maguire . And yes, Tom, you had us at hello, too.

Rent Jerry Maguire on Prime Video , YouTube , Apple , or Google .

In 1996, Tom Cruise starred in two movies. One of those movies, Jerry Maguire, earned the actor his second Oscar nomination. The other film was Mission: Impossible, a film that drastically changed the course of his career. As Ethan Hunt, Mission: Impossible elevated Cruise into a bonafide action star, as he started his transition from dramatic and comedic movies to more action and sci-fi films.

Thirty years later, the Mission: Impossible franchise remains one of the most consistent series in Hollywood. Mission: Impossible continues to raise the stakes with each entry as Cruise risks his life with each death-defying stunt, all in the name of entertainment. Before Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, we have a task for you to complete. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to read the Mission: Impossible movie rankings below and discover which one is the best in the series. Cue the theme song.

When it comes to television, one of the biggest reasons modern audiences come back to watch certain shows is their characters. But sometimes, the villains of the series have made viewers want to tune in to the next episode more than the heroes did.

Whether they be ruthless crime lords, destructive supervillains, or just plain old jerks, television has presented audiences with some of the most despicable characters in pop culture, and these evildoers are good at their jobs. 10. Vecna from Stranger Things (2016-present)

Catch up on Maverick's return.

preview for Tom Cruise on his 36 year wait for Top Gun Maverick

If you haven't seen it yet, or just feel the need for speed a rewatch, Top Gun: Maverick is now available to watch for free on Channel 4's streaming service, following its network premiere last night (March 23) on Channel 4.

The sequel will be available to watch for the next 30 days.

Top Gun: Maverick sees Tom Cruise reprise his classic role as Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell as he heads back to Top Gun to train up a new batch of recruits, including Goose's son Bradley 'Rooster' Bradshaw (Miles Teller).

The mission? To destroy an unsanctioned nuclear plant before it becomes operational, and since it's Top Gun, it's a mission that could prove deadly to whoever takes part in it.

Top Gun: Maverick also brings back Val Kilmer as Maverick's nemesis-turned-friend Tom 'Iceman' Kazansky, while other newcomers include Jennifer Connelly as Maverick's ex Penny, Glen Powell as Jake 'Hangman' Seresin and Jon Hamm as Beau 'Cyclone' Simpson.

glen powell, top gun maverick

The sequel proved such a hit that Paramount was confirmed to be developing a third movie earlier this year, with Top Gun: Maverick co-writer Ehren Kruger working on a draft of the script.

Powell appeared to already confirm his return shortly after the news: "There is stuff happening, and it sounds very exciting. I don't know when I'll be going back… I'm sure there is a jet waiting for me sometime in the future."

Top Gun: Maverick is now available to watch on Channel 4's streaming service.

Hannah Waddingham's 'intense' first meeting with Tom Cruise involved being stuck on a fighter carrier for 5 days sitting inches away from his face — and it was 'lovely'

  • Hannah Waddingham had an intense but lovely first meeting with Tom Cruise on "Mission: Impossible 8."
  • She told Business Insider they were stuck on a fighter carrier together for five days during filming.
  • Waddingham was also stuck in a confined space with Ryan Gosling and Aaron Taylor-Johnson filming "The Fall Guy."

Insider Today

Hannah Waddingham got up close and personal with Tom Cruise when they first met — literally.

On the red carpet for the premiere of "The Fall Guy" at the SXSW Film & TV Festival on Tuesday, Waddingham spoke to Business Insider about her time filming the eighth installment of the "Mission: Impossible" franchise and what Cruise was really like.

"We were stuck on the George H. W. Bush fighter carrier for five days," Waddingham told BI, adding that they were "literally" face to face with each other for all that time. "That was my first meeting with him."

Related stories

Despite the confined quarters, Waddingham said the experience was "quite intense and very lovely." The two even bonded enough for her to land a spot on Cruise's famous holiday coconut cake list . (Cruise famously sends an elite group of people, including his friends and many famous costars, a decadent white chocolate coconut cake from Doan's Bakery in California every year.)

"I've had the coconut cake," Waddingham gleefully confirmed.

The "Ted Lasso" star has been on an action kick recently. Her casting in an undisclosed role in the untitled eighth film in the "Mission: Impossible" film series was revealed by director Christopher McQuarrie on Instagram in March 2023.

On top of making her debut in the long-running franchise, she's also in "The Fall Guy." The comedy, directed by former stuntman and acclaimed action director David Leitch , is loosely based on the 1980s TV show of the same name and centers on washed-up stunt performer Colt Seavers ( Ryan Gosling ), who's recruited by Waddingham's character, Diet Coke-obsessed producer Gail Meyer, to retrieve missing action star Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) in order to save his ex-girlfriend Jody's (Emily Blunt) movie.

The action-heavy film required a lot of physical work from everyone, including Waddingham. On the red carpet, she added that she pulled off the most difficult stunt of her career on "The Fall Guy," — and it involved getting cozy with her costars Gosling and Taylor-Johnson.

"It was a little bit of myself and Ryan and Aaron in a confined space for two or three days… doing things," Waddingham teased.

"Which sounds fruity but isn't," she laughed.

"The Fall Guy" hits theaters on May 3.

How to watch all the Godzilla movies

Long live the King of the Monsters!

Godzilla fights Kong in Godzilla vs. Kong

Godzilla has been a mainstay in cinema ever since the irradiated monster’s debut in 1954. Forty years later, the Japanese film icon is arguably more popular than ever thanks to Universal’s MonsterVerse films and the critically acclaimed Toho-produced “Godzilla: Minus One.” Whether you’re a long-time enthusiast or a newcomer, this is one of the most exciting periods to be a fan of the legendary King of the Monsters.

Though it seems “Godzilla: Minus One” isn’t emerging onto streaming services any time soon, “Godzilla x Kong: The New Kingdom” arrives in theaters on March 28. That makes this the perfect time to revisit or watch all the Godzilla movies. Some of these films are all-time kaiju classics, while others are less so. However, even the lesser films in the franchise contain enough action and imagination to keep you entertained. Like pizza, even bad Godzilla is good Godzilla.

Without further ado, here are all the Godzilla movies you can watch on streaming services.

Showa Era (1954-1975)

The Showa era of Godzilla introduced us to the famous monster. While the first two films were serious affairs, the franchise gradually became sillier as the producers aimed the movies toward children. Godzilla went from terrorizing Japan to becoming its protector. That’s one hell of a character arc!

Showa Era movies have been around the longest, so it’s no surprise that they’re the most beloved. These are the same films I grew up watching reruns of on WPIX channel 11 in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. Yes, some of these movies are downright silly, but I still get a kick out of them.

  • "Godzilla" (1954) - Amazon
  • “Godzilla Raids Again“ (1955) - Amazon
  • “King Kong vs. Godzilla“ (1962) - Pluto channel
  • “Mothra vs. Godzilla“ (1964) - Amazon

  •  “Ebirah, Horror of the Deep“ (1966) - Amazon
  • “Son of Godzilla“ (1967) - Amazon

  • “All Monsters Attack“ (1969) - Amazon
  • “Godzilla vs. Hedorah“ (1971) - Amazon
  • “Godzilla vs. Gigan“ (1972) - Amazon
  • “Godzilla vs. Megalon“ (1973) - Amazon
  • “Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla“ (1974) - Amazon
  • “Terror of Mechagodzilla“ (1975) - Amazon

Hesei Era (1984-1995)

The Godzilla franchise went into dormancy after Terror of Mechagodzilla. You can’t keep a good monster down, however, and the irradiated lizard came back with the appropriately named Godzilla Returns in 1984. This signaled the start of the fan-favorite Hesei Era.

Heisei Godzilla films feature a meaner, more animalistic Godzilla. Though he would sometimes inadvertently help mankind in some outings, Heisei Godzilla was often the antagonist in these movies — even if there were more threatening monsters destroying Japan.

Unlike other eras of Godzilla, the Hesei films all took place in the same timeline — featuring returning monsters and humans. The psychic Miki Saegusa, for instance, appeared in every Heisei flick except “Return of Godzilla.” Seeing Godzilla evolve and become stronger throughout these movies is a blast — one that ends with a satisfying end for the monster. If you can’t tell, Heisei Godzilla is my absolute favorite.

  • “Godzilla Returns“ (1984) - Amazon
  • "Godzilla vs. Biollante“ (1989) - Pluto channel
  • “Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah“ (1991) - Pluto channel
  • “Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II“ (1992)  - Amazon
  • “Godzilla vs. Mothra“ (1993) - Pluto channel
  • “Godzilla vs. Space Godzilla“ (1994) - Pluto channel
  • “Godzilla vs. Destoroyah“ (1995) - Amazon

Millenium Era (1999-2004)

After the disastrous Roland Emmerich-directed “Godzilla” film in 1998, Toho Studios decided to bring the original Godzilla back after a brief hiatus following “Godzilla vs. Destoroyah”  As its name suggests, these are the Godzilla films released in the 2000s, or aughts as the kids say.

Except for “Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla” and “Godzilla Tokyo SOS,” the Millenium Godzilla movies were stand-alone films. But like the Heisei Era, Godzilla was a destructive force that humanity tried to stop. While this era had some great monster action, the movies were somewhat standard kaiju films that did little to shake things up. The big outlier is “GMK,” which featured one of the most terrifying and original takes on Godzilla.

While these movies aren’t all that great, they’re still fun — even the goofy “Godzilla: Final Wars.” The franchise would go into another hibernation period after this.

  • “Godzilla 2000“ (1999) - Amazon
  • “Godzilla vs Megaguirus“ (2000) - Amazon
  • “Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack“ (2001) - Amazon
  • “Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla“ (2002) - Amazon
  • “Godzilla Tokyo SOS“ (2003) - Amazon
  • “Godzilla: Final Wars“ (2004) - Amazon

Reiwa Era (2016-present)

This is the current era of Godzilla films, hence the noticeable lack of entries. Technically, there are five Reiwa Era films, but only two are live-action. It’s hard to give an overview of the Reiwa films since we’re still in this era. So far, these are the most serious Godzilla movies since the original and “Return of Godzilla.“

Arguably, the most interesting Reiwa movie was “Shin Godzilla.“ Not only was it directed by Neon Genesis Evangelion creator Hideaki Ano, but was also a scathing commentary on the Fukushima nuclear incident — only with Godzilla acting as the natural disaster Japanese officials failed to save people from. In terms of tone, “Shin Godzilla“ is closest to the dour original. It’s my personal favorite after the 1954 classic.

Then we have Oscar-winning “Godzilla: Minus One“ — the first Godzilla movie to ever earn that coveted award. Of all the Godzilla movies, this is the one with human characters you actually care about. In fact, they drive the plot! “Godzilla: Minus One“ is a film anyone can enjoy, even if they don’t care for monster films. Hopefully, it’ll come to a streaming service soon.

  • “Shin Godzilla“ (2014) - Crunchyroll
  • “Godzilla Minus One“ (2023) - unavailable

MonsterVerse (2014-present)

Legendary Pictures’ MonsterVerse is intriguing since it’s the only non-MCU cinematic universe that’s still flourishing. Not only does it contain five films (one of which is the upcoming “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire“), but there are various comic books and TV shows associated with it.

The MonsterVerse began with 2014’s “Godzilla.“ That one has the most serious tone as each subsequent film in the franchise would progressively become more lighthearted. I wish they had retained the mood of 2014’s “Godzilla,“ but I’ve still enjoyed the flicks since they don’t lack amazing monster battles. Visually, these films are everything I could have hoped for when watching Godzilla movies as a kid.

  • “Godzilla“ (2014) - Max
  • “Kong: Skull Island“ (2017) - Max
  • “Godzilla: King of the Monsters“ (2019) - Max
  •  “Godzilla vs Kong“ (2021) - Max
  • “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire“ (2024) - only in theaters

Other Godzilla movies

If you’re this deep into the Godzilla movies, then you may as well watch the Godzilla-awful ones.

1998’s “Godzilla“ had one of the biggest (pun absolutely intended) marketing campaigns I had ever seen. Unfortunately, all those Taco Bell commercials and posters stuck on buses couldn’t help what would ultimately be a bad “Jurassic Park“ movie masquerading as a Godzilla film. Though I didn’t hate the design, having Godzilla be a mutated iguana was just plain stupid. Also, there is no universe where a New York City taxi cab can outrun a monster that can easily catch up to military helicopters. I’ll stop ranting now, but suffice it to say “Godzilla“ 1998 is the bottom of the barrel of the franchise.

Or it would be if the Netflix-exclusive “Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters“ trilogy didn’t exist. These anime films (and I use the term anime very loosely) have a cool premise but the execution never works. I’d go into detail about the plot, but to be honest, it’s so nonsensical that it’s not worth explaining. Only watch these movies if you’ve got nothing better to do.

  • "Godzilla" (1998) - Amazon
  • “Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters“ (2017) - Netflix
  • “Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle“ (2018) - Netflix
  • “Godzilla: The Planet Eater“ (2018) - Netflix

‘Road House’ Director Doug Liman’s Studio Star Vehicles Are Always Refreshingly Uneven, Unpredictable, and Weirdly Alive

Where to stream:.

  • Road House (2024)

Wait, Was That Post Malone In ‘Road House’?

Is glass key, florida a real place what to know about ‘road house’ 2024 filming locations, stream it or skip it: ‘road house’ on amazon prime video, a highly enjoyable remake starring jake gyllenhaal and his abs, when does ‘road house’ (2024) come out on amazon prime how to stream jake gyllenhaal’s ‘road house’ movie.

If you heard around the year 2000 that the director of Swingers and Go had signed on to remake the 1989 action movie Road House , you might sigh with trepidation over another seemingly independent-minded filmmaker getting sucked into a vortex of Hollywood pointlessness. Then you might patiently wait for the movie to flop and bust him back to the smaller-budget world where he clearly flourishes. But the strangest thing about the career of director Doug Liman isn’t that he would wind up remaking Road House after such a promisingly scrappy start back in the 1990s; it’s that in 2024, the new version of Road House feels weirdly of a piece with Liman’s other films. He hasn’t made recent studio-feuding headlines by prematurely denouncing his own selling out; he’s made them by angrily insisting that his new movie deserves to be seen in a theater, rather than heading straight to streaming . Whatever he’s up to, Doug Liman is taking it seriously.

Maybe he’s still sensitive about the fact that his first movie, the little-seen dark comedy Getting In , was sent direct to video back in 1994. Liman got a quick reboot of sorts when he directed the 1996 indie comedy Swingers , which is now more closely associated with screenwriter and star Jon Favreau (himself no stranger to corporate-sponsored fare). But with Swingers and its 1999 follow-up Go , Liman established himself as snappy, scrappy chronicler of post-Tarantino semi-youth culture, following would-be scenesters and some actual dirtbags on their misadventures, often involving side trips to Las Vegas. A quarter-century later, Go may look dated in some of its fashions or cultural preoccupations, but it’s still a fast, funny crime comedy – one of the only Pulp Fiction knockoffs that feels like it occupies its own distinct milieu, perhaps due to Liman’s admitted tendency toward “chaotic” shoots that find the movie as he goes rather than working from a strict and disciplined blueprint.

Liman’s jump to bigger projects came with The Bourne Identity , though he retained enough of that old chaos during filming that the studio kept him off the many subsequent sequels. Throughout his “sellout trilogy,” as he once called it, you can sense that creative process starting to wobble, the wheels about to come off: The messy but icon-heavy Mr. and Mrs. Smith gets by on its star power and occasional, mildly Soderberghian touches, and Jumper (or as my tour guide at the Coliseum in Rome referred to it when listing movies that filmed there, The Jumper ) should be a good fit for Liman’s immediate, itchy style, but collapses in a heap of YA franchise spare parts. His subsequent big-to-small-to-big swings have only occasionally seemed strategic, even when, by the vagaries of studio release schedules, his last bunch of movies have been released in complementary size-contrasting bursts: The stripped-down war actioner The Wall and one of Tom Cruise’s only non-franchise movies American Made months apart in 2017; the long-delayed sci-fi YA picture Chaos Walking and the antsy COVID project Locked Down even closer together in 2021.

Road House is sort of both scales at once; a splashy, star-vehicle action movie on one hand, a straight-to-streaming remake of an unambitious exploitation movie on the other. Tackling a disreputable cult classic, Liman has a few tricks he uses incessantly, primarily whip-panning his camera around so ostentatiously, and at such canted angles, that it looks virtual, like the more heightened sequences in James Wan’s Aquaman movies, only without the high-fantasy imagery. The fight scenes are more elaborate and sustained than in the 1989 original, and also, befitting this era of filmmaking, look way more fake. Thematically or formally, it’s hard to draw many connections between this movie and, say, Go , other than a sly sense of humor and an unflagging energy.

At the same time, there is a kind of knockabout unity among most of Liman’s films. It’s best encapsulated by his best big-budget movie, maybe even his best movie full stop: Edge of Tomorrow , the Tom Cruise/Emily Blunt time-loop adventure. While following the incremental growth of a callow military public relations officer (Cruise) as he lives, dies, and re-lives the same ill-fated battle with hostile alien invaders, Liman finds a lively rhythm to Cruise’s repeated demise, mixing montages and more sustained sequences with abandon. It feels like the movie he was looking for during Jumper or Mr. and Mrs. Smith , the perfect vehicle for the restlessness of his scrappy very ’90s comedies – and for Tom Cruise, too, at a time when his star-driven career moves threatened to feel overly brand-managed.

The same nearly happens with Jake Gyllenhaal in Road House , albeit at a lower wattage and with bigger caveats about his own later-career tendencies: The movie feels tailored, on the fly, to Gyllenhaal’s personality, just as Mr. and Mrs. Smith refashioned itself around Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie almost instinctively, and Bourne Identity turned into a signature level-up for Matt Damon despite a seemingly interchangeable blank of a lead character. Still, nothing in those movies has the bittersweet romantic soul that emerges from Edge of Tomorrow , where Cruise does his most effective audience-surrogate work of the past 20 years simply by quietly falling in love with Emily Blunt while repeatedly getting shot down – literally. Just limiting the comparison to action-movie skills, nothing in Road House has Tomorrow ’s slam-bang slyness, even when Liman seems interested in using CG action to bend and stretch the laws of physics, like a scene where a pickup truck bears down on Gyllenhaal, throws into reverse, and somehow manages to force-scoop him up and yeet him off a bridge. The visual effects of the scene are dodgy, yet there’s more muscle behind this fakery than in similar moments from, say, Matthew Vaughn’s Argylle . Throughout the movie, Liman slides in and out of the uncanny valley; I still have next to no idea whether or not he can be described as good at directing action. I do know that the sloppy-by-design Vegas car chase in Go has a lot more juice than anything that happens in Jumper or most of the cartoony face-offs in Road House (or even the comparably stripped-down The Wall ).

Why, then, does Doug Liman making junk like Road House still sound weirdly promising? How did I so enjoy, for example, his seemingly intentionally annoying marital-disintegration caper movie Locked Down , as well as his computerized Road House and even the largely ignored/reviled Chaos Walking ? I think it’s because there’s something genuinely flaky and erratic about Liman that often makes his bigger-budget movies uneven, unpredictable, and weirdly alive. On paper, Road House is everything wrong with reboot culture: It tries to steal the valor of a movie with an organic, cable-grown cult following; it slathers its “updates” in unconvincing special effects; it actively wastes the time of multiple talented performers; it chucks any chance to say anything (beyond pointing out its own questionable bona fides as a quasi-western) with reckless abandon. In reality, the movie fakes it until it makes it. Maybe that’s why so much of Liman’s disparate, uneven work still feels spiritually connected to Swingers : Those guys bumbled, wheedled, and improvised their way toward unlikely charm, too.
