Absolutely stunning performance, trascendental is the best way to describe it. This was my second time seeing him and I have to Tamino is one of the few artists who sounds even better live than he does on his studio recordings. His band is just as talented, particularly his drummer, Ruben Vanhoutte. I would seriously recommend all Tamino fans to see him live if you get the chance!

Astonishingly underrated artist, though with talent and passion like that I'm sure he's going to blow up very soon. Also, though somewhat shy, he still managed to connect with audience through his very sweet/cute disposition.

Me and my friends saw him live for the first time and we absolutely loved it. He is such a talented artist at such a young age. He has a beautiful, hypnotic voice which feels at times shocking that he can sing so good live.

Hands down one of the best concerts I have ever been to. So magical and intimate. His transcending and powerful voice literally puts you in a trance. Everything was just perfect! And I really hope to see him again soon

Breathtaking. Seeing him live adds so much feeling to his already beautiful songs. Definitely an artist on the rise. Don’t miss the chance to go see them while the concert halls still have space to breathe.

About Tamino

The arrival of Tamino is enough to make even an agnostic ponder predestination. The grandson of one of Egypt’s most famed singers, the great Muharram Fouad, Tamino came to the guitar as a teenager only after finding a rare resonator in his late grandfather’s attic.

Interview: Tamino

Tamino 2

Tamino in Brooklyn, NYC ; July 2022 – Photo Credit: Jeton Bakalli

Tamino-Amir Moharam Fouad , who records under the moniker Tamino , is a talented young Belgian-Egyptian (and Lebanese) songwriter, musician, and singer who is taking the world by storm with his quietly contemplative to passionately compelling music that is as much influenced by Eastern culture as by Western styles.

The UK, Europe, and the Middle East are already under his captivating spell, and the US is now quickly following suit. The fast-rising artist is cementing his status as a premier storyteller and mesmerizing singer with his upcoming second album, Sahar , which will be unveiled on September 23rd.

Tamino is kicking off a solo North American TOUR on September 16, and will follow it with a European TOUR with full band on November 21. He recently performed at Pukkelpop in Belgium. Upcoming TOUR DATES are listed at the end of this interview.

Tamino just dropped the absorbing music video for his stark third single “You Don’t Own Me,” a potent ode to striving for and attaining freedom in the midst of oppressive forces. The song was inspired by Man’s Search For Meaning by Viktor E. Frankl, and the video was directed by Bastiaan Lochs and Tamino’s brother Ramy Moharam Fouad , and choreographed by Olivier-winning choreographer and Beyonce collaborator Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui .

A master of mood and meaning, the magnetic Tamino released his debut album, Amir , in October 2018 and had been touring and promoting it before the pandemic hit. While on lockdown and while away from life on the road Tamino was able to concentrate on creating his new album – and he was out ‘n’ about in NYC this past July promoting his recent singles in high anticipation of Sahar ’s arrival this fall.

More from Tamino that is not covered in the chat below will be exclusively featured in the next issue of Big Takeover magazine, #91, which will be published this fall season.

Hello Tamino! It’s so wonderful to touch base with you about you and your music. I’ve been swooning over your songs ever since hearing “Habibi” in 2017. I reviewed your Habibi EP and debut album Amir in Big Takeover magazine, and have featured you at Big Takeover online with my Top 10 Songs playlists. Several years ago you even contributed a cool article to the site about your Top 5 Inventive Music Videos.

You’ve been off the (social network) grid for the past couple of years and now you’ve returned with two captivating singles and exciting news about your upcoming second album, titled Sahar , and fresh tour dates. You’ve also recently been playing some select live shows.

Where are you now while you’re replying to this interview?

Tamino: Hi! Thank you for your compliments and support. I’m in Williamsburg, NYC as I’m writing this. Spending some time here to get to know the city better and to do some promo, etc.

Did the pandemic affect the creation and recording of Sahar ? Did the lockdown/quarantine response delay the making of the album?

Tamino: I don’t want to call it a lockdown album, even though most of the songs were written in the heart of the pandemic. It probably did affect the writing a bit though. I remember going through a bit of an existential crisis at first when I got home, since what I had been devoting my life to for all my adolescent and adult life suddenly felt like it had no place or importance in our society anymore. Of course, that’s never been true, but it sure felt like that at some points.

Where was your home base during 2020/2021? Where did you compose the songs for Sahar , and where did you record them?

Tamino: Home was Antwerp, Belgium. I wrote most of it at home, recorded it in multiple places, the most important ones being my place, PJ ’s place (one of the producers of the album), and Studio ICP in Brussels.

You’ll be roaming the globe in support of Sahar soon, with some festival shows, and then a US/Canada tour in September and October, followed by a European tour in November and December. What can Americans and Canadians expect for your solo performances? Will it be you and a guitar on stage or…?

Tamino: Since the venues we’re playing in North America are still smaller than the ones we do in Europe or the Mena region it will indeed be a solo tour. We feel like the band becomes an added value the moment we play bigger places.

On stage it will be just me, my guitars, and my oud (I’ve been starting to play oud on stage only a couple of weeks ago and it feels great). I will be bringing my sound and lighting engineer though, so our approach is very much as serious as it would be in Europe. The main difference being that you’ll just be seeing and hearing me on stage.

So for the European tour you’ll have the full band. Who is currently in the line-up?

Tamino: Our live band currently consists of Ruben Vanhoutte on drums, Colin Greenwood [of Radiohead ] on bass, and Vik Hardy on keyboards/guitar.

Does this line-up differ for the musicians who contributed on Sahar ? Do you have any guest musicians/vocalists on the album?

Tamino: Ruben and Colin played on almost every track. During the recording of the album, I also made use of the opportunity to invite some musicians that I’ve always wanted to work with. Most of them I knew from seeing them at mutual friends’ or parties in Antwerp.

Most notable musicians who contributed that you should check out: Simon Beeckaert , Hendrik Lasure , and James De Graef . They all have multiple projects, which I love. James’ project Loverman is one in particular that I’m a huge fan of. His album isn’t released yet, but will be one of my favorite releases of the year, I’m sure.

Angèle , another one of my favorite artists from Belgium, sang on “Sunflower,” for which I am so grateful. We met each other some time ago and got along immediately, when I wrote the song, I had to think of her and her beautiful voice. So happy she’s on it!

Tamino 1

Focusing on your upcoming album, Sahar , you’ve released the brooding and longing rumination “The First Disciple” and followed that up with the equally yearning, but flowing popper “Fascination.” What are the other songs on Sahar like? Did you use different instruments, techniques, and/or song structures when recording in the studio?

Tamino: I learned how to play the oud quite well over the last few years and used it as a main instrument on this album a lot. I feel like the sound of the nylon strings of the classical guitar and the oud bouncing off each other sits at the heart of the key songs.

As for techniques, etc… we definitely had a different approach from the first album. There was more room [to] experiment and more time to mess around in the studio for the magic to happen.

Do you feel the need to be in control of every aspect of producing a song, or do you receive input from others, and possibly make changes as a result of their ideas?

Tamino: It’s both. I’m a bit of a control freak, but I surround myself with good people whose taste I trust and value highly, so I’ll always listen to their advice and ideas. I could never and would never want to do it on my own.

What about the subject matter of the songs on Sahar ? Relationships with others and with the self have been at the forefront, lyrics-wise. Do you also bring in other themes to this collection of tracks?

Tamino: It’s difficult to say as I’m only getting to know the songs as I’m playing them and I haven’t been able to play these songs for an audience yet (except for “The First Disciple”, “Fascination,” and “A Drop of Blood”; that last one is unreleased, but I felt like playing it already).

Overall, I feel like there is a sense of in-betweenness present in all the songs. That’s why I chose the name ‘Sahar’, which means ‘just before dawn’ and conjures up this in-between realm for me.

Another image that comes to mind is the aftermath of a storm (or a whirlwind), you don’t know precisely what happened, but you feel something impactful took place and it puts you in a reflective state of being. The air in the album is not clear, like there are dust particles flying in the air (we interwove the songs with a lot of noise which represents the dust particles for me).

Are there specific Belgian, Egyptian, Lebanese (or other) musicians who have had a direct influence on your aesthetic/musical outlook (sound, style, subject matter)?

Tamino: So many. Here are a couple: Egyptian: Oum Kalthoum, Abdel Halim Hafez, Moharam Fouad – I can’t not include him [Tamino’s grandfather, a renowned singer and actor] Lebanese: Fairouz, Marcel Khalife Belgian: dEUS, Balthazar, Zita Swoon, Kapitan Korsakov

What pearls of wisdom have you taken to heart from your 2017 to 2019 adventures on the road?

Tamino: Meditation is good for you. I do 10 minutes a day now and I’d recommend it to everybody. I wish I had done it in the beginning of my career as well.

And how do you prepare and/or stay in shape (vocally, physically, mentally) for a long tour?

Tamino: Amazing crew and band, yoga, meditation, vocal warm-ups, [and] grapefruit.

Do you find that audiences in different countries respond differently to your performances?

Tamino: I guess I notice some cultural differences for sure, but overall I feel like no matter where we play the people who come to our shows are able to open their hearts which often leads to a transcendental quality in the room.

Does your brother, Ramy Moharam Fouad, who is a filmmaker and photographer, or other family members accompany you on tour, or show up to your performances?

Tamino: [Ramy has] often joined us on tour and will keep on doing so where his schedule allows him to. He’s working a lot these days and doing many beautiful projects.

Speaking of Ramy, he directed the music videos for your songs “Cigar” (at age 16!), “Persephone,” and “Tummy,” and has photographed you for Flaunt, among other visual/storytelling projects. Is he involved with the visual aspect of Sahar at all?

Tamino: He made pictures for the artwork and filmed us while we were working in the studio. The music videos so far have been directed by Bastiaan Lochs and Jonathan Van Hemelrijck , two dear friends of mine who I wanted to work with for a long time.

I think filming the music video for “Fascination” must have been a special time for you. Can you tell us what the shoot was like, and where you filmed?

Tamino: It was a lot of fun. That was the main goal, actually: to have fun. Making music videos can be quite stressful. You’re usually doing something way too ambitious for way too small of a budget. So, this time around we wanted to have a good time.

We were very much inspired by the footage of Jim Morrison driving around Joshua Tree in a Ford Mustang. We shot in Spain, in the Navarro region, and rented a 1968 Dodge Charger.

For this song I thought it was important to, rather than make a video with much symbolism and mystery (like “The First Disciple”), set a mood and a feeling. That’s why a road movie in this beautiful region seemed ideal.

I have great memories of the shoot. One being of course the drifting, which is actually me (I saw some people asking questions [about] whether I actually did those scenes).

What record label is releasing Sahar ?

Tamino: It’s going through Communion for Europe and through my own label Djinn in collaboration with Secretly Group in North America.

On a non-musical note, I wanted to posit some quick questions regarding some of your favorite things and experiences, so to kick it off, what was the last book you read? Mine is Michael Palin’s New Europe from 2007 – Many of his observations still ring true, for better or worse.

Tamino: Last book I read was Karl Ove Knausgard’s My Struggle, Book 3 . I’m reading part 4 now. I am in awe with this series and find them deeply moving.

What is one of your most favorite books? One of mine is Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte.

Tamino: One of my favorite books of all time is The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera.

What was the last vacation you took? I can’t even remember mine, it was so long ago! I think it was Ocean City, New Jersey…

Tamino: I guess my time in New York [now] sort of counts as vacation.

What was your most fave vacation that you’ve been on?

Tamino: Before this I went to Essaouira in Morocco, which I loved. Difficult to pick a favorite.

What is the latest album you’ve played in full? Mine is Sweet and Savage by Los Indios Tabajaras, originally from 1958.

Tamino: The latest discovery probably: Mudanin Kata by David Darling & The Wulu Bunun.

What is one of your most fave albums to spin? Mine is Amir , of course!

Tamino: One of my favorites: Blue Maqams by Anouar Brahem.

What was the last show you attended as an audience-member? What was one of your most favorite shows as a fan?

Tamino: Last one I attended was Nick Mulvey [at] The Mercury Lounge in NYC . Beautiful show. One of my all-time favorite shows probably Nick Cave in Sportpaleis Antwerpen.

What was the latest instrument you played? What is one of your most fave instruments to play?

Tamino: Oud.

What is the last film you watched? Hmmm, for me can I say a season 4 binge of Stranger Things ?

Tamino: Last film I watched was Synecdoche, New York .

What is one of your most fave films? One of mine is Maurice , directed by James Ivory and based on E.M. Forster’s classic novel.

Tamino: One of my favorites: Phantom Thread .

What is the latest snack you’ve eaten? What is one of your most fave snacks to eat?

Tamino: New York Pizza. One of my favorites: Good olives.

Because it’s summertime – well, in the Northern hemisphere at least, what is the latest ice cream flavor you’ve eaten? Mine is Coolhaus [amazing women-owned ice cream brand] Street Cart Churro Dough. Yum! [Update: Coolhaus recently reformulated their products and this flavor is not as good as before, IMO ]

Tamino: The latest I ate was Thai Coconut ice cream (a bit spicy, [but it] was good!).

What is one of your most fave ice cream flavors? Mine is Coolhaus Chocolate Molten Cake. Delish!

Tamino: One of my favorites: Pistache.

Q&A: Tamino looks ahead at his solo North American tour

by Julia Sullivan 2022-09-19

Q&A: Tamino looks ahead at his solo North American tour

Tamino’s spellbinding music combines European and Arabic folk traditions into novel creations. As he embarks on a solo tour of Canada and the USA, WRBB’s Julia Sullivan caught up with him to talk Patti Smith, guitars, and favorite hometown spots. Tamino’s sophomore album, Sahar , is due September 23. In the meantime, you can catch Tamino at the Sinclair on September 19 (tickets here ).

Julia Sullivan: What are you most looking forward to on this upcoming tour compared to your previous shows?

Tamino: I’m good — grateful to be on the road again. This tour is quite special. We haven’t played that much in North America so far, so I feel like we’re reaching a lot of new people. The venues we’re performing at are smaller than the ones we play in Europe, so that’s why this is a solo run. The goal is to play big enough venues on our next American tour to justify bringing the band. For now, I’m really enjoying these solo shows. It’s how I started out years ago, so I guess you could say it’s going back to our core.

I saw that you are opening for Patti Smith at the XPoNential Music Festival this weekend. What is that like? Are you a Patti Smith fan, and did anything in her set surprise or inspire you? Have you read her books?

I’m a huge Patti Smith fan. Not only her music and her books, but also her inherent wisdom are a continuous inspiration, so when I heard I would be opening the stage for her, I was over the moon with excitement. The show went great. As I was playing, I felt like I was on holy ground. Seeing Patti’s concert afterwards was the greatest gift, honestly one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. It was both the biggest rock n’ roll and the warmest, most tender, and uniting of experiences.

When you’re at home in Antwerp, where are your go-to spots for checking out new live music, or any of your favorite locals?

De Roma is a beautiful venue in Antwerp; it’s an old opera house in a cool multicultural area of the city. Another favorite place of mine is De Studio, an old legendary theater academy attended by some of Belgium’s finest actors. Now, the beautiful building serves as a cultural meeting place for live music, theater, cinema, and great parties where all these different disciplines are often combined.

What types of guitars do you prefer to play when you’re touring or playing live? Does it change at all when you’re recording in the studio?

I travel with a bunch of guitars. My most trusted live guitar is a Gibson Sonex custom from 1981. It was also the most featured guitar on the first album. Other important live guitars are a Squier baritone, a Telecaster made for me by luthiers from my hometown, and a Manuel Bellido flamenco guitar. Recently I also started playing the oud on stage, which is an Arabic lute. For shows I use a Riversong electric oud — an amazing instrument, very true to the original sound of an acoustic oud.

For the new record, I mainly used acoustic guitars, an acoustic oud, and piano/keys. Live, I’ll play some of the new songs on the recently acquired Bellido nylon string guitar, while others will be interpreted differently on electric guitars.

Who would your dream collaborator be and who were some of your biggest influences as a developing artist? Are there any new artists that you love right now?

There’s a few but I’m always scared to jinx any possible collaborations by mentioning them in interviews.

Street: Is there anything different about this [North American] tour that allowed you to be able to write more?

Tamino: I think it's just mindset. I used to need a lot more alone time. And I would keep new ideas to myself for a very long time until I thought they were worthy of showing to other people. And I think now I'm able to present an idea, even if it's not fully formed yet, to the people I trust or to musicians I want to work with which is a different process.

I do have a few questions about your songwriting process, because your lyrics are so interesting. A lot of your songwriting is very visual. Do you have a favorite visual artist or images you pull from when you're writing?

I'm very flattered you say that actually, because I feel like visually, I'm actually not that advanced. If I'm in a museum, and I look at some paintings, I don't feel like I'm an expert or that I'm able to see stuff that maybe some of my friends are able to see or be touched by. I had this one friend in New York who took me to the [Museum of Modern Art] and he was like, “Ahh, the way the light falls there ...” He was touched by everything.

Recently I went to the [Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp] where I live, a big museum that was under construction for 10 years, and now they reopened. They have an artist there called James Ensor who is this English painter who lived in Belgium for most of his life. I think most of his collection is in Belgium. I thought he really made beautiful paintings. He's a big influence on expressionism , because it was sort of at the edge of impressionism and then [the start of] expressionism, so I think he's really cool. Overall, I guess I'm more touched by expressionism, but I also really love very figurative, realistic stuff.

Would you say those are the same inspirations that go into your music videos as well?

Those movements really struck a chord, and those paintings really struck a chord with me. The "Sunflower" video was influenced by Degrasse very clearly and some other stuff. Then "You Don't Own Me" was influenced by a Tarkovsky movie. "Fascination” [is] just a total tribute to [and] rip off of a Jim Morrison video.

Thinking about the songwriting process of Sahar versus Amir , I think that Sahar seems more pared down, and it wasn't recorded with the firka from Amir , so it's more intimate lyrically. How would you compare your process for writing the two albums?

The process of songwriting was similar in the sense that it's just usually me on a guitar trying to figure out something that I like—a chord progression or melody. [For Sahar, ] I recorded a lot of the demos in my home, and they had a roominess to them. I wanted to keep that intimate feeling in them. We definitely consciously didn't make a big sounding record. It didn't feel right. It was a time of reflection and of looking inwards, I guess. I feel like that's what you feel in that record.

Across your songs, you use a lot of religious allusions and considerations of faith. What is your relationship with spirituality and religion?

There's this friend of mine who is actually reading a book called The Hero with a Thousand Faces , and it talks about how the stories that are most true to our inner being will always come out in some way or another in similar ways—and it's true. We like to look at religious texts from all over the world, [and] they always share a lot of similarities. That's not because they necessarily influenced each other, it's more that our inherent experience as humans comes out through storytelling. It's awesome. So that's something that's really interesting: the story that we need to tell. And the stories that we tell will always survive longest. I think it sort of gives them a higher truth, a metaphysical truth, which makes religion quite beautiful to me. You don't have to necessarily believe in every little thing that's described in a book.

I mean, that's something that I would never do, for example, to specify my take on religion. I could never believe some of the miracles described in some of the holy books, but they are talking about the metaphysical truth, which says something about us as humans, and it's something very valuable. I really think it's true that a person's relationship with a character from a story can be more real and more valuable than with their own neighbor, so that's the same with religion. I felt with just reading books, just reading some of those authors who have died a long time ago—that they're my friends. Sometimes they're even better friends than people I know in real life. I think [that is] what religion does, but I don't know. That's my take on it.

I'm not a practicing believer—not in the classical sense. But I do have faith. I think a lot of people have faith without realizing [it]. Even waking up and starting your day, we all have like these little acts of fate throughout our lives without even noticing.

Which artists would make your dream collaboration list for any future albums or work?

There are so many. I've always said a song with Massive Attack would be cool. I still think that would be amazing. Not even on [one of my albums], I would gladly sing a song on their album, or a standalone song, whatever it is. I would love to work with them, but I've never reached out or anything. Maybe I should try that one.

In a 2020 interview with GQ, you had mentioned that you were learning Arabic. How is that going?

How do I say it… انا افهم عربي شوية ["I understand Arabic a little" - Ed.]. I'm learning a bit of Egyptian dialect on an app. I should do it every day, like half an hour, but I always begin and go slow. But I'm loving it though. It's really a lot of fun.

You've been spending a lot of time in New York, and I think you've hinted at a possible move. What appeals to you about New York? How do you feel like the music scene compared to that of Brussels?

I'm definitely planning on moving. It's just where I want to be right now.

I've never really felt part of the music scene, and it's the same over here. I think if I would want to be part of the scene, I'd better move to LA where there are a lot of musicians. I feel like here there's a lot of artists, but not necessarily a lot of musicians—at least not that I know of, not that I've met. I'm moving because I just don't know any other place like this where you can walk out your door and experience so much unplanned adventure. It's just so inspiring. So much has been said about this, and so much more eloquent stuff that I don't have the vocabulary for it.

I don't have the experience of the city to talk about it that way. But I can only say that the experiences I've had so far over here have been beautiful and life changing. I just want to keep being in that energy for at least a while, and I feel like it's beneficial for me as a songwriter as well.

How do you like to spend your time in the city?

Walking is just my favorite thing, which is honestly something I never did in Antwerp. It's just not an inviting city to go for [a walk]. Some parts of it are, but in New York just everywhere, just anywhere, I love to walk. It's so inviting to go out there and see where you end up. It feels like this huge playground where you can just hop from one thing to another. You can go to a museum, then you can go shopping or go to a bookstore, and it's just endless. It's endless.

And you can also just do nothing and not be bothered by anything. Yeah, it's very freeing. Very, very liberating.

To finish off the interview, what made you decide to record in English [at the beginning of your career] rather than Dutch or French? Did you always plan to target your music towards an English–speaking audience?

I've always listened to English music way more than any Dutch [music]. I know some Dutch songs, of course, usually “klein tunes,” which means “little art,” literally translated. It's usually very folky songs about our little life basically, and it's something that I never quite related to. Also, being Egyptian and Lebanese, I've always felt more like, it's a cliche, but a child of the world or whatever. So, that would have never felt right. [As for] French, I don't even speak French that well, so that was never an option.

English felt natural, it still does. It's the language I love expressing myself in. I do love this distance between me and the language, because, I mean, it's not my native language. So I'm always learning, which is fun. Even now, I also love to read. I read more English books than I do Dutch books, or I watch more English movies. It just makes sense to me. Of course, the fact that it's more universal, well, that's something that's very appealing too, because it blows my mind where I can go. Seeing all of those places ... that's an amazing experience which would, of course, never have happened if I sang in Dutch.

This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.

Tamino on lana del rey, personal sacrifice, and revisiting  'amir'.

image

Belgium-based artist Tamino captivated audiences with the release of his debut album,   Amir , earlier this year. His sound is a melancholy marriage of effortless guitar licks, the occasional note from the Arabic scale, and his spellbinding voice, which is both unique in tone and absolutely astonishing in range.

In the midst of a flurry of shows, he announced a deluxe version of Amir , complete with two brand new songs, "From Every Pore" and "Crocodile," live recordings with the Nagham Zikrayat orchestra, demos, and live recordings from his show at La Cigale in Paris. The deluxe version of his album hits virtual shelves on October 18, but Tamino has continued his substantial tour schedule in the meantime, most recently playing shows in Tunisia and Egypt.

We sat down with Tamino at the tail end of his North American tour to talk opening for Lana Del Rey, his grandfather's guitar, the difference between Western and Arabic orchestras, and more.

OTW: How are you? You've been consistently on the move this year!

Tamino: The bike ride I just took did me well. We might do it in every city now. You see a lot of the city you're visiting in a short amount of time. It's really cool.

OTW: Are there cities that you're looking forward to hitting on your upcoming tour?

Tamino: I'm very much looking forward to the Middle Eastern tour, because it's the first time I'm playing in my Fatherland, Egypt. It's the first time I'm playing in Morocco and Tunisia. We're going to play some shows in Turkey as well. I don't recall many artists who have gone there, and it's a shame. There's a lot of fans of alternative and indie music over there, so I'm looking forward to it.

OTW: Your show at the Moroccan was incredible. How did you learn to play guitar?

Tamino: My Belgian uncle taught me like three chords, I think they were A, B, and G. But then the rest of it I learned by myself, and I got some lessons too. I found my grandfather's guitar in Cairo and I took it home, and that was the moment I decided I wanted to learn guitar.

OTW: Do you still play on your grandfather's guitar?

Tamino: That one I use quite often yes. The resonator guitar, it was made in Egypt.

image

OTW: You've mentioned that your music features the Arabic scale, which can be new or confusing to the Western ear. How have Western audiences perceived that sound?

Tamino: Well, I myself am Western. Half of my family is Arabic, and I have a strong connection to those countries, but I grew up in Belgium. I only ever play for audiences who don't know Arabic music well. I know the scales and what's special about them, though I don't consider myself an expert, but I think the way it comes through in my music is very natural. I don't feel like Western crowds have difficulty with it at all. I think the songs are the most important thing, and it's all about songwriting. The Arabic elements, a quarter note here and there, is not in the way of them experiencing the music in my opinion.

OTW: One of the most interesting things about being at your show was seeing the level of focus in the crowd. Your fans are clearly hardcore. Have you had any memorable fan interactions on this leg of the tour?

Tamino: All the time. They all touch me. What's funny to see is that there's people from all sorts of backgrounds and ages, I find that really cool. I also noticed that there could be people whose other favorite artists are hip-hop artists. There could be people who mainly listen to classical music, but they are all coming together at my show. I'm always amazed to see that. People travel from far to see the shows, because I'm not yet playing in every town. I don't want them to have to travel that far. I'm hoping to play shows closer to their towns.

OTW: Do you have any pre-show rituals?

Tamino: I wish I had more of them! Today's bike ride was really cool, maybe I will make it one of my rituals. I do like to warm up my voice for at least half an hour if possible. Scales and some improvisation before running a marathon.

OTW: Let's talk about the deluxe version of your album, Amir . What sparked the decision to include the live recordings with the ones that were produced out?

Tamino: We did some live sessions with Nagham Zikrayat, the orchestra that recorded on the record. They play exactly like an Arabic orchestra from the 1950s, or before that even. They are very good at creating the same sound as back then, which I really love. They're very nice and amazing musicians, so we recorded live with them in one room and we took some videos of that as well, which will be released soon. Then there are some demos and B sides on the deluxe as well.

OTW: When you work with the orchestra, what is your role? Are you acting as director, arranger, and conductor or are you letting them do their thing?

Tamino: I wrote all of the melodies for the parts, but I don't know how to arrange for an orchestra. So I had an arranger come in and write down which instruments should play what, and he also conducted it. I was at the recording desk, listening, and would tell them if I wanted it a bit more dramatic or held back. The cool thing about Arabic musicians is that they will always do their own thing with it. They will play what's written on the paper but add their own improvisational ornaments. We had one song played by two different orchestras actually, one Arabic and one Western. I would compare the versions and the difference was huge, totally different vibe, though they were given the same arrangements.

OTW: Did you have a preference between the orchestras?

Tamino: Definitely the Arabic. Not for every song though. For "Persephone," I wanted a more straight dance on that one, so I went with the Western ensemble.

image

OTW: The last year has been very big for you, with the release of your debut album Amir being so successful. You also recently opened for Lana Del Rey! How was that?

Tamino: I supported her in Dublin, and it was a lovely experience. She is really, really cool and very kind. It was a total honor and I felt like the people in Dublin really embraced me. It's always scary to do a support show because you never know if people will pay attention to you, but they were so nice and it was a great experience.

OTW: Can we expect any collabs between the two of you or is that just wishful thinking?

Tamino: I don't know about any of that, I'm totally not in a position of assuming such a thing. (laughs)

OTW: You're really far from home, what does your family think about the success that you've had?

Tamino: My father was a singer. His father was a big singer in the Arabic world. He understands, but my mom understands as well. They are very supportive. They just hope that I'm doing well and find it important that whatever takes me away from home has to be worth the sacrifice. When you're in this profession, there is a lot of sacrifice, so it has to be worth it, you know?

OTW: What do you hope to do with music in the coming year?

Tamino: I have no answer for that, I only know that I'm going to take some time off and write new stuff and then come back. It goes where it goes. It reaches whoever it reaches, and I hope it reaches many. The way my life has been organized for the last three years has been a lot of playing, and there wasn't much time to think about anything or write. So, I will probably fall into a black hole - into my time of rest, but then, afterward, I hope to come back with a new record and do some touring again - play bigger venues, reach more people, reach more places.

OTW: That will be a much-deserved hibernation. Finally, who are your Ones To Watch?

Tamino: That's really difficult. I mainly listen to older music, if I listen to anything. The ones I have in mind are already big! I guess good music finds people, so they don't need a shoutout from me.

Hans Zimmer talks about first North American tour dates in 7 years, the magic of composing for film

Composer Hans Zimmer’s film scores have soundtracked magic movie moments in “The Lion King," "The Dark Knight” and both new “Dune” movies, to name a few

LOS ANGELES -- For generations, German composer Hans Zimmer 's film scores have soundtracked magic movie moments in “The Lion King,” “Gladiator," the “Dark Knight” trilogy, and most recently, “Dune” and “Dune: Part Two.” This fall, Zimmer will bring his award-winning scores to the live stage.

His “Hans Zimmer Live” tour, which sold out in Europe, will make its way to the U.S. and Canada this fall, marking the first time Zimmer has performed in North America in seven years.

The last time, as some fans may recall, was a 2017 Coachella performance.

Over Zoom from New York, Zimmer said he was inspired after “refusing to get onto a stage for 40 years” because of something his friends, The Smiths' Johnny Marr and Pharrell Williams, told him.

“You have to look your audience in the eye. You can’t hide behind the screen forever. You know, you owe it to your, you know, audience,” he says they told him. And after Coachella, he realized: “I can do this,” he said.

Having done the run in Europe, “we're at the top of our game at the moment,” he says of his orchestra.

Don't expect a traditional, classical music setting or a piano concerto — at “Hans Zimmer Live,” there is no conductor, no sheet music in front of each musician, and not a single frame from any of the films he's referencing.

“I come from rock and roll and I believe in putting on a show,” he says. “People stay with us because we give them an experience which they’ve never had before... Life is hard. Life is tough these days. And people worked hard to go to pay for these tickets, so we better pull off a show that is absolutely worthy of them coming and seeing us."

“Hans Zimmer Live” kicks off at the Gas South Arena in Duluth, Ga. on Sept. 6 and will hit 17 cities across the U.S. and Canada before concluding at the Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia on Oct. 6.

The tour includes stops in Hollywood, Florida; Raleigh, North Carolina; New York; Baltimore; Boston; Montreal and Toronto; Minneapolis; Chicago; Fort Worth, Texas; Denver; Las Vegas; Los Angeles; Oakland, California, and Seattle.

Zimmer says attendees can expect a diverse audience. “I’ve looked out at the audience and there’s a mom with her grandson sitting next to a guy with a mohawk, sitting next to a man in a business suit, sitting next to another bunch of, you know, bikers,” Zimmer said. “So, it’s not just multi-generational, it’s multicultural.”

In more ways than one: Zimmer’s orchestra is from Ukraine; “Two weeks after the invasion started, we managed to get about half of them out of Odessa,” he says. Lebo M, who sings “The Lion King” theme, was a political refugee from South Africa when Zimmer first met him. Pedro Eustache, his woodwind player, is from Venezuela, “and he thinks he can probably never go back home,” says Zimmer.

“I have this very, very international group of players and ... part of what makes them such emotionally committed musicians is that they all have a story to tell you.”

“Hans Zimmer Live,” which has been recently rearranged, includes works from “Gladiator,” “Pirates of the Caribbean,” “The Dark Knight,” “Interstellar,” “The Lion King,” “The Last Samurai,” and “Dune.”

“Each piece is connected with the adventure of actually creating it, the adventure of actually making that movie, the adventure of the collaboration, the adventure of, you know, ‘How did we get here?", he says. "Where did this journey start? And how can we make sure that it never ends?

“Each one of those movies is painted in color and affected by what is going on around us. And they have all been extraordinary journeys.”

All of these films and their scores are vastly different, but Zimmer's idiosyncratic approach and arrangements should be considered the connective tissue. That, and a certain je ne sais quoi that makes an effective — and affecting — score.

“You need to be committed. You need to be honest. You can’t be sentimental,” he says of a successful score. “The other thing is, it’s the people who are performing it. Because if you think about it, the last actors that really get hired, the last actors that perform in a movie, are the musicians. So, I’m very careful about picking the people I work with.”

Tickets for “Hans Zimmer Live” will become available for purchase at www.hanszimmerlive.com, starting at March 22 at 10 am local time.

Jennifer Lopez cancels handful of shows on first tour in 5 years, fans demand explanation

tamino north american tour

Jennifer Lopez has canceled shows in seven cities on her upcoming " This Is Me…Now The Tour ," her first tour in five years.

According to Ticketmaster's website , Lopez will no longer stop in Nashville, New Orleans, Raleigh, Atlanta, Houston, Cleveland and Tampa.

Ticketmaster's website says that the event organizer has canceled the event and that no action is required to obtain a refund. At this time, the reason for the canceled shows is unknown.

USA TODAY has reached out to reps for Lopez, Ticketmaster and Live Nation.

Some fans expressed disappointment in the comments section on the website.

"The concert in Raleigh was cancelled. and for several days now we have been waiting for at least some comments, but no one is giving them. This is disrespectful towards the audience! I can’t even buy a new ticket in another state now, because I don’t know which cities will cancel!" one person wrote.

Another commented, "The show in ATL was canceled. Why was this show canceled with no explanation."

In February, Lopez announced her upcoming tour in celebration of her new record "This Is Me...Now," which released in mid-February as a 16-track deluxe album.

Lopez has said that this might be her final album and she doesn’t suggest otherwise when asked to explain why she would be happy with “This is Me … Now” as her swan song.

“This was going to be the quintessential thing I have been searching for and wanted to say about love. I’ve been guy on this search for so long, since people first met me and my first record came out and even before that in my first movie role, where I’ve been on this journey trying to figure this thing out for myself. This (album) kind of closed the loop in a way,” Lopez previously told USA TODAY.

Jennifer Lopez says new album sums up her feelings, could be her last: 'True love does exist'

She added: “It captures this moment to really say the things I want to say about love, and that is that true love does exist and some things are forever. Please don’t give up on that because that’s all that matters in life … love.”

The upcoming tour will also feature Lopez's chart-breakers and classic hits from her discography, like songs "On The Floor," "Let's Get Loud" and "Jenny from the Block." Lopez's most recent tour in 2019, the "It's My Party" tour, sold out venues across the country.

This tour is quite special. We haven't played that much in North America so far, so I feel like we're reaching a lot of new people.
