Birthright Israel

Meet Our Team

So you’re probably wondering who is going to be guiding you through the best trip of your life.

Here’s the answer: a bunch fun-loving, young, relatable, easygoing and highly experienced people who are going to be making every moment memorable for you!

The Tour Educator. The licensed tour guide knows Israel like the back of their own hand. He or she shows you all the sights and provide insightful background on where you are and what you are seeing. Far from boring you with historical facts, the tour guide is fun and engaging and can make places really come to life. They add a ton of personality and meaning to every location and help you experience Israel in a vibrant, deep, and rich way.

An Israeli Activity Leader*. This staff member makes the trip fun and engaging by running activities on the bus and at night. They’ll help break the ice, teach you Israeli songs and a little Hebrew, run awesome evening programs exploring Jewish identity, and prepare you to meet the Israeli soldiers. The activity leader works every day to make sure you don’t have a dull moment!

American Staff Leader. This is the leader of the American team who makes sure to develop personal relationships with the participants. Their main goal is to make sure this trip is going to be the time of your life . On some trips the staff leader might be a famous Broadway performer , on other trips a Jewish educator or rabbi. They share great stories, meaningful content, insights, cool facts, etc., and make the trip an even more fun and meaningful experience.

A Note on Rabbis: if the word “rabbi” makes you want to run screaming, consider this  amazing review  from Jenny, a 20-year-old participant:

  • “I’m not religious, so having a rabbi on my trip was a major concern I had about going. I can honestly say that all of my fears about the strict, no fun rabbi I expected, were completely diminished within the first few seconds of meeting him. Throughout the trip my Rabbi crowd surfed on the bus, wore a durag, told us to call him Rabbi D-Unit, sang his own rendition of multiple Backstreet Boys’ songs, and danced down the aisle on the bus to any and every song that came on. He was hysterical, and the more time I spent with my Rabbi, the more every negative idea that I previously had about a Rabbi being on my trip dwindled. To my complete surprise, he was probably the best part of my trip.”

American Co-Staff. This can include an American co-staff leader, alumni staff, and/or madrichot.

  • American Co-Staff Leader: Some trips also have an additional American staff leader who works together with the main staff leader to ensure you are having the most incredible experience possible!
  • Alumni Staff: These are people who have been on Birthright Israel themselves, usually in their mid-20’s. They help out with logistics, and are there to talk to the group and hang out as friends. You can talk to them, ask them questions, and turn to them with any problems you might have.
  • Madrichim: “Madrich/a” in Hebrew means “counselor”. The madrich or madricha is usually a student leader. You can talk to them about anything. They’re there for you if you have any questions or issues. They are caring and helpful and create a family-like atmosphere in the group.

The Medic/Security Guard. Picturing a strict, serious man following you around with a gun? Think again: the medic/security guard is usually a young man or woman and totally a part of the group. Many participants make friends with the security guard and stay in touch after the trip!

The Bus Driver. This is the person who’s going to take you all over Israel, picking you up and dropping you off at every location. Trust us, at the end of the 10 days you will miss your driver! Plus, the bus driver usually has a bunch of water bottles to sell in case you forgot it.

*Not all trips have an Israeli co-staff. At those times, this role is played by the tour guide too.

OU Israel Free Spirit has private donors who provide an extra American staff member on some of the trips, who goes above and beyond what is provided by normal Birthright Israel trips; this is one of the things that makes Israel Free Spirit so special!

Ten things i’ve learned by staffing 10 birthright trips.

birthright trip staff

I’m a practicing attorney with a fire in my soul that burns for the Jewish people and Israel. And I’m obsessed with Birthright. Taglit-Birthright Israel is famous for offering a free trip to Israel for any Jew ages 18-32. Each Birthright group of approximately 40 participants is assigned a tour guide, two American staff, a medic/security guard and bus driver. Over the course of the past six years in addition to managing Rosenblum Law, I’ve had the merit to staff more than 10 Birthright trips as a volunteer, bringing groups of young Jews to Israel for seven to 10 days at a time. I’ve staffed several trips of each age group (18-22, 22-26, 27-32) across multiple trip providers. I’m also a Birthright Fellow. Here are some of my takeaways from the varied experiences that I’ve had:

1. It’s not all about having fun. Birthright Israel has often gotten a bad rap for being a “party trip,” nothing more than an opportunity for Jewish youngsters to party hard on a free trip. While it’s undeniable that certain participants do come on the trip with this as a motive, in general there are many (low-cost, if not free) options that college students have if that’s their primary goal. Birthright trips are structured to give participants a good time, but the majority of the itinerary is focused on education, not partying.

2. There is no “right-wing” agenda. Left-wing groups such as J Street and IfNotNow have made significant efforts to deter young Jews from going on Birthright. Their claim is that Birthright presents a myopic, unbalanced viewpoint that is intended to delegitimize (or at least ignore) the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In my personal experience, this couldn’t be farther from the truth. The tour guides I’ve had have been balanced, straightforward and open to any question or issue raised by the participants. Every trip includes a geopolitical lecture in which timely issues are addressed, which also gives participants an opportunity to ask questions in an open forum.

3. Age matters. Birthright trips are roughly divided between three age groups (18-22, 22-26, 27-32). There are vast differences between the various age groups in terms of engagement. In general, the older the participant, the greater the level of engagement. While some have criticized Birthright for expanding the upper age limit due to concerns that it would cause younger Jews to procrastinate, it’s clear that expanding the limit not only gave participants who had “aged out” a second chance, but it also meant giving more mature and engaged individuals an opportunity for a meaningful experience.

4. Distance is a plus. One of the greatest challenges facing educators today is the significant number of distractions, technological and otherwise. It’s very difficult to expect sustained focus in this day and age. However, bringing an individual across several time zones and immersing them in a different culture and language helps reduce that challenge significantly. While participants still do bring their phones to Israel, the itinerary is packed and gives participants a more appealing alternative to their digital screens (especially if the tour guide is engaging!).

5. The tour guide and American staff can make a huge difference. Just as with teachers, Birthright tour guides (or “tour educators” in Birthright parlance) can vary. Some are more articulate, some less. Some are newer and seem to be more invested in giving participants a great experience, and some are more tired and weatherworn, having staffed dozens of trips. Some organizers select U.S. staffers who are very educated in terms of Israel and Judaism, and some have very little background and know very little Hebrew. Birthright Fellows is a training program that aims to better prepare and educate U.S. staffers for their Birthright trips. Yet not all staffers are fellows. Having experienced, educated and spirited staffers can mean a totally different experience for participants than the opposite.

6. The Israeli “mifgash” is often the highlight of the trip. Every Birthright trip is joined by a number of Israeli peers for part (or all) of the Birthright trip. Known as the mifgash, it’s an opportunity for the participants to connect with Israelis of the same age. While at the beginning the contrast seems stark—not just as a result of the language barrier but also the fact that the Israelis have all served (or are currently serving) in the IDF—by the end of the mifgash most participants remark with surprise regarding how similar they really are to their Israeli peers.

7. The seven-day itinerary is limiting, but still better than nothing. Some years ago, Birthright started experimenting with a shorter itinerary, ostensibly intending to make it easier for working participants to come on Birthright and not have to take that much time off from work. Invariably, a shorter itinerary not only means that certain experiences will have to be omitted, it also means that there won’t be as much time to work on group and relationship dynamics.

8. Shabbat and the bar/bat mitzvah ceremony can be very powerful. Not every Jew (and especially these days) has a bar/bat mitzvah and many haven’t ever been in a shul. Some participants have never experienced a Shabbat, and some don’t even know what Shabbat is.

9. The most understated part of Birthright is the idea of community. I’ve been saying for years that if the founders wanted every Jew to have a free trip to Israel, they easily could give everyone a free plane ticket and some travel vouchers to see the sites. The fact that Birthright is a group trip is by design. Many participants don’t have any idea of what a Jewish community (or a community in general) is. I’ve had participants who have said that they were “the only Jew in my high school” and things of that nature. One of the most powerful parts of Birthright is the gelling of the “bus community” into a cohesive unit. Participants feel like they are part of something greater and not just a random Jew living in the isolation of the American exile.

10. Levels of post-trip engagement can vary greatly. A study recently released by Brandeis University found that Birthright has a significant impact (in terms of Jewish identity and connection to Israel) on virtually all types of participants, despite their disparate Jewish identities and backgrounds. I’ve found that this impact varies greatly. Some participants jump right in after the trip and connect with their local JCC, synagogue or Chabad House. Most Birthright groups these days create a WhatsApp group that allows them to stay in touch. These groups are often jammed with 100 messages a day in the days following the trip, yet over time most participants become less active. Yet for others it takes time for that seed that was planted on Birthright to germinate. I’ve had participants who said they never considered marrying Jewish or raising their children Jewish until Birthright.

Specially-Trained Birthright Israel Trip Staff Ready to Lead and Engage at Home

Over 90 current, future birthright israel trip staff learn together at the kona kai resort as newest cohort of birthright israel fellows..

Israel National News

More than 90 current and future Birthright Israel trip staff learned together at the Kona Kai Resort in November as the newest cohort of Birthright Israel Fellows. The program, run by The iCenter for Israel Education, deepens the skills, knowledge, and confidence of Birthright Israel staff to create inspiring and meaningful educational experiences for Birthright Israel participants during their trips.

“Birthright staff are deeply committed to creating meaningful Israel experiences, both during the trips and in their engagement with young adults at home,” adds Ari Berkowicz of The iCenter. “We want to elevate staffs’ skills and approach so they can help any person—regardless of their interests, political views, or level of knowledge—build an authentic relationship with Israel and Israelis.”

Fellows are largely young North American professionals with a passion for Jewish continuity and Israel that work within the private sector, as well as Hillels, Federations, Maccabi USA, and elsewhere. During the four-day intensive training, Fellows learned from and with experts in Jewish, Israel, and experiential education. The program’s interactive and dynamic workshops were designed to inspire and challenge Fellows’ thinking, and to help them engage with anyone on a Birthright Israel trip. Sessions covered areas such as how to build effective relationships, understanding blind spots as educators, making space for a diversity of perspectives, and more.

“Birthright Israel Fellows provided me the ability to come together with other peer leaders and educators from the Jewish community to talk about practical programming and things we can do on the ground in Israel,” said Alex Reiss from Vermont. Alona Izkovitz, Israeli Tour Educator, from Hadera agreed, “I’m amazed and shocked by the amount of things that I’m learning each and every moment, and it’s opening my mind to so much more about what I’m going to do next.”

  • Birthright to resume trips to Israel next month
  • Birthright cancels upcoming Israel trips
  • First second generation participant is a historic milestone
  • 13,000 North American Jews to visit Israel with Birthright

Birthright Israel Fellows are committed to staffing at least three Birthright Israel trips following the training. Now in its 10th year, the Birthright Israel Fellows program develops an elite cadre of North American experiential Jewish educators to enhance Birthright Israel experiences and the broader field of Israel education and Jewish education. Through this personal and professional development program, these educators have the tools to help young Jewish adults develop deep and meaningful connections with Israel and Israelis. Cohort 12 participants will begin staffing trips this winter.

Ideally, Birthright Israel staff will be on UF’s campus for at least one semester following the trip

Be available for staff training on Monday nights at UF Hillel beginning at 8:30pm from 3/27-4/17

The follow-up that happens after the trip is just as important as the trip itself; relationships built during the trip are an extension of the Jewish community on campus. Staff members are expected to continue engagement during the following semester in order to support participants in bringing their experience to campus. Although this is not a paid position, all travel, food, and accommodations are covered for staff members. If this sounds like the job for you, please fill out the application below.

The deadline to apply is Wednesday, Feb 1, 2023.

Applicants that UF Hillel would like to move forward with will be granted an in-person interview at Hillel conducted in February.

2 crew members die during ‘incident’ on Holland America cruise ship

  • Associated Press

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Two crew members on a Holland America cruise ship died during an “incident” in the ship’s engineering space, the cruise line said.

The unidentified crew members died Friday while the Florida-based Nieuw Amsterdam was at Half Moon Cay in the Bahamas, Holland America said in a statement.

Authorities were notified and the cause of the accident is being investigated, the cruise line said. Crew members were being offered counseling.

“All of us at Holland America Line are deeply saddened by this incident and our thoughts and prayers are with our team members’ families at this difficult time,” the statement said. “The safety, security and welfare of all guests and crew are the company’s absolute priority.”

The cruise line did not offer any further details about the crew members, nor which agency was handling the investigation. The ship set sail out of Fort Lauderdale on March 16 for a seven-night trip.

Auburn made 'great first impression'

birthright trip staff

Akylin Dear has plenty of schools pursuing him.

He finally got to check off a visit to one of them Friday.

The four-star running back out of Quitman, Miss., made his first visit to Auburn, getting to meet with head coach Hugh Freeze, running backs coach Derrick Nix and tour the Woltosz Football Performance Facility.

"First experience, great first impression," Dear said.

Akylin Dear visited Auburn Friday.

Freeze grew up in Independence, Miss., and being from the same state, there's definitely a connection.

"We’re Mississippi kids, we’re different," Dear said. "He kept it real with me. Great coach, I could see myself being coached by him."

The other guy that would be in charge of Dear is the running backs coach Nix. Dear knows about Nix's history in the game and sees the potential to get developed under him.

"Great coach, he’s been in the game a long time," Dear said. "Pretty sure he can teach me a lot at the running back position. Great guy, honest guy."

When it comes to Auburn, the tradition of running backs is something that sticks out to the No. 7 running back in the nation. Ronnie Brown and Bo Jackson are a couple that come to mind for Dear and Auburn's message is that he could be the next.

"I think about all the running backs that came here," Dear said. " I could see myself being the next great. They produce some great running backs, RBU."

Auburn preached priority to Dear throughout the day and it's one of the reasons he "for sure" wants to visit again. An official visit is something Dear looks to set up either for the fall or summer.

He'll do the same for several other programs and is eyeing a later decision, following the conclusion of his senior season.
