Visiting Lanzarote in 5 days: essentials and tips

Is 5 days enough for lanzarote.

Lanzarote isn’t a big island, but there’s plenty to do. With 5 days, you can see most of the main attractions. You won’t see every corner of the island, but you’ll get a good idea of all it has to offer: volcanoes, mountains, César Manrique attractions… Compare available flights .

How to get around during your 5 days

It really depends on what you want to see. We think it’s best to rent a car to get the most out of the island, but you can also keep yourself busy by taking day trips from your hotel. Don’t worry, driving in Lanzarote is very easy (see our article with video ).

driving in Lanzarote

Need to rent a car? Our advice:

  • Compare car rental prices on our favorite platform: Discovercars.com – one of the best customer-reviewed comparison sites!
  • Choose the car and company you prefer (with enough power for steep roads).
  • Consider their comprehensive coverage option – we always take it for peace of mind!
  • As this is an island, the number of cars is limited. Book early for a wide choice of vehicles!

See our tips for renting a car in Lanzarote .

However, if you really don’t want to drive, we have a section on car-free Lanzarote below.

Option #1 – Lanzarote Highlights in 5 days (with car)

In this 5-day itinerary, we take you to all our favorite places in each category: volcanoes, beaches, culture…

Best place to stay for this itinerary

There’s no better option for this itinerary. Most of the attractions we visit are no more than 1 hour 10 minutes from the main cities. If you want to balance your travel time during your stay, choose either option:

  • Costa Teguise – see the best rated accommodations
  • or Playa del Carmen – see top-rated accommodations

And check out the car rental offers on our favorite platform: Discovercars

Day 1 – South Lanzarote: Papagayo and volcanic wonders

Stop 1 – Hike to Papagayo beach

Papagayo

Papagayo beach is one of Lanzarote’s most famous spots. Located on the south coast, this is the oldest part of the island. The small cove is beautifully shaped with emerald waters. There’s no paved road to get there, only a very bumpy track (where you’re not normally allowed to go with rental cars). You can get there on foot – it’s beautiful, along several beaches. It’s a 2 km walk in one direction, with ascents and descents. Read more about it.

Stop 2 – Salt marshes

Janubios Salinas

We’ve always loved salt marshes, their shapes, colors and little white cones of salt. On Lanzarote’s west coast, you’ll find the Janubios Salinas. In this astonishing landscape, it’s a real spectacle! We recommend you take a drive to discover the magnificent views.

  • Stop 3 – Los Hervideros

Los Hervideros

One of our favorite Lanzarote landscapes is Los Hervideros. We really enjoyed the mix of turquoise water, dark basalt columns and the small red volcanic hill behind. We sat there and watched. It was the perfect mix for our taste. A path has been laid out to explore these amazing cliffs, and here you can even see one of the arches. It’s a fun, easy walk.

It’s on the west coast, south of Timanfaya National Park, and the views are best at high tide, when you might see the waves crashing. Read more about it.

  • Stop 4 – The green lagoon (Charco Verde)

Charco Verde

On our way to Charco Verde, we only expected to see a green lagoon. But what’s left of the volcano behind is equally astonishing. There’s a mix of red, yellow and black rocks that have been beautifully shaped by erosion. All this is combined with a black beach and a practical viewpoint. An interesting little stopover and one of the best things to do in Lanzarote. Unfortunately, we don’t think any of our photos do this landscape justice. You’ll have to see for yourself! Read more about it.

Day 2 – Timanfaya and the volcanoes

  • Stop 1 – Timanfaya National Park

Timanfaya National Park

The best-known activity on Lanzarote is the Timanfaya National Park coach tour (see our Timanfaya guide ). Located on the west coast, this is one of the best and most picturesque parts of the island. It is made entirely of volcanic soil. There aren’t many ways to experience it. The main one is a bus tour along the park’s only road. You can’t get off the bus to protect the park, but you do get to see some of the most unique views you can imagine. It’s like visiting another planet! You drive there, park next to the restaurant and hop on one of the tourist buses!

Once again, we recommend visiting the park in the morning, as it’s less crowded.

  • Stop 2 – Hiking in and around Montana Cuervo

Montana Cuervo

We did a lot of walking on the island. But our favorite is actually one of the easiest and (unfortunately) most frequented: Montana Cuervo. Located in the Lanzarote Los Volcanes Natural Park (along with the Timanfaya area), it is easily accessible by road. First, you walk across the entire volcano, with superb views of a well-preserved cone. All around you, lava takes many forms. Panels help you understand the landscape around you and the volcano’s geological history. The path then takes you around it and inside through a collapsed side. Allow 1 to 2 hours, depending on the scope of the visit and the number of photos you wish to take. There’s no shade, so bring water and good shoes.

  • Stop 3 – Volcanic vineyards

Volcanic vineyards

You can then explore the central area with its volcanic vineyards. There are several wineries you can visit with tastings and/or museums. It’s quite impressive to see these plants growing on black soil when there’s nothing else around. The most famous is La Geria, but our favorite is El Grifo with its small museum.

Day 3 – César Manrique and Lanzarote

Stop 1 – Cactus garden

Cactus Garden

A garden full of cacti !!!! yeah !!! We love these funny and varied plants. Of all the places to visit in Lanzarote, this is our favorite. The cactus garden is the work of the famous architect and artist Cesar Manrique . He imagined how to transform this former rofera (quarry) into an exhibition of the most beautiful cactaceous flowers from all over the world. There are some 1,500 specimens of 450 different species, representing all 5 continents. ( see our article on the cactus garden for more photos)

Stop 2 – Jameos del Agua

Jameos del Agua

We think this is one of the most frustrating things about Lanzarote. This pool at Jameos des Agua is so inviting!!!! Don’t you think? And we love it. Here, César Manrique transformed part of a long collapsed lava tunnel into several locations. There’s an underground lake, restaurants, an amphitheatre… You can have lunch inside the cave! See more photos

Stop 3 – César Manrique Foundation

César Manrique Foundation

The César Manrique Foundation is based in a house designed by Manrique, where he lived for 20 years.

It is built in harmony with a lava flow formed during Lanzarote’s famous eruptions between 1730 and 1736. Inspiring rooms have been created in volcanic bubbles and linked by tunnels. Exploring the place is a fun experience, but you’re frustrated again at not being able to swim in the beautiful pool…

At the end, you can admire the showroom with paintings and lava flowing in through the window.

Allow time to enjoy the garden and its sculptures.

Stop 4 – Mirador del Rio

Mirador del Rio

Located on the Risco de Famara, the mirador overlooks the island of La Graciosa at over 475 m altitude. It was once a 19th-century military fort. César Manrique transformed it in the 1970s, camouflaging it in the rocks and offering incredible views of the cliff, the island and the stretch of sea in between, called El rio.

At the foot of the cliff, you can also see the Salinas del Rio salt marshes. The interior of the building, with its white walls and curves, provides an ideal backdrop to the magnificent scenery.

Find out more about César Manrique and the island of Lanzarote.

Day 4 – Nature and history

Stop 1 – Cueva de los Verdes

Cueva de los Verdes

This photo was taken at Cueva de los Verdes. Jesus Soto installed lights in the lava tunnel to create a fascinating experience. We’ll say no more, so as not to spoil the surprise. But we were very impressed with the experience in the end! But if you suffer from claustrophobia and vertigo, this is not the place for you. See more photos.

Stop 2 – Lunch in Punta Mujeres

Punta Mujeres

Then head for the charming coastal village of Punta Mujeres. Easily accessible from the main road, it feels integrated between land and sea. Lots of little white houses, a few fishing boats and several rock pools that fill up at high tide to let you cool off. The atmosphere is relaxed and the small restaurants welcoming.

Stop 3 – Teguise

Teguise

If you’re looking for a historical ambience, Teguise is an excellent choice. It was once the capital of Lanzarote and has retained its charm. It’s very pleasant to stroll through the narrow streets of the center with its white houses. Most of the time, it’s very quiet, but there are lots of people on Sundays for the market. Next door is a fort with a piracy museum, if you want to find out more and have some fun!

Stop 4 – Sunset at Famara beach

Teguise

It’s well known that one of the best places to see the sunset in Lanzarote is on Famara beach. When we saw that the conditions were going to be good, we jumped in the car and headed out. We were not disappointed! The wide beach reflects the impressive Famara cliffs, bathed in the setting sun. This is one of the best locations for photography in Lanzarote, with the silhouettes of surfers and the play of light. But you won’t be the only photographer around.

Day 5 – La Graciosa

Stop 1 – Ferry from Orzola

Ferry from Orzola

Drive to Orzola to catch the ferry. La Graciosa is a small island to the north of Lanzarote. Access is by ferry and there are no roads, just tracks in the sand. Explore on foot or by 4WD cab. Unlike Lanzarote, it is covered in white sand. But it also has a few volcanoes. The colors are amazing and you can enjoy a variety of landscapes: beaches, volcanoes and basalt columns. Even the ferry ride is fascinating, with superb views of the Famara cliffs to the north of Lanzarote.

Book your return ferry ticket.

Stop 2 – Exploring La Graciosa

Playa Francesa

Once on the island, you have several options:

  • Walk to a single location like Playa Francesa.
  • Use one of the 4WD cabs to go somewhere and arrange a pick-up later for the return journey.
  • Choose an island tour with one of the 4WD cabs – they include Playa Francesa, Playa La Conchas, Caleton de los Arcos, Pedra Barba.

Some of our favorite stops are: Playa Francesa, Playa de Las Conchas, Caleton de los Arcos (lava arch).

See more photos

Stop 3 – Back on the ferry

Return ferry to Lanzarote

Enjoy the beautiful trip home!

Stop 4 – Northern caletones

Caleton Blanco Lagoon

If you still have the energy, along the north coast (easy stops on the way back), you can admire the caletones with a lagoon, and very dark rocks contrasting with the white sand.

Alternative day – beach

You can also spend one of your days relaxing on the beach near your hotel!

And you can add a fun activity such as:

  • Sunset cruise with dolphin watching – see availability + book
  • Buggy ride – see availability + book
  • Scuba diving – see availability + book

OUR ADVICE FOR RENTING A CAR IN Lanzarote

  • Compare prices on our preferred platform: DiscoverCars – one of the best rated sites.
  • A small car is all you need.
  • But you can also choose a larger one if you wish, as the parking spaces are rather large.
  • There’s a lot of demand and it’s an island, so book early .

driving in Lanzarote

Read our tips

Option #2 – Best-of Lanzarote in 5 days (without car)

In this itinerary, we suggest some of the best group day trips you can take to discover the island without hiring a car.

If you don’t rent a car, you really should stay in one of the 3 main seaside towns from which all excursions depart:

  • or Playa del Carmen – see top-rated accommodations (with the most choice of activities)
  • Playa Blanca – see the best rated accommodations

Day 1 – Timanfaya National Park, volcanoes and wine

Timanfaya National Park

Timanfaya National Park is the ultimate Lanzarote excursion. It’s absolutely gorgeous! This is a national park and you can’t walk around on your own. But even in a group, it’s fantastic to see the colors and power of the Earth. Timanfaya National Park is located on the west coast of the island and consists entirely of volcanic soil.

There are full-day tours that take you to Timanfaya for the bus tour, but also take you to the coast south of the park (our tip: sit on the right-hand side of the bus in the national park). We think it’s really worth it. The green lagoon of El Golfo and the incredible coastline of Los Hervideros are among our favorite spots on the island. The colors are simply incredible. Lava and erosion have created magnificent shapes. We sat there and enjoyed the view.

We really recommend that you book the combined tour to be able to see them.

See program and availability + book

Day 2 – La Graciosa

La Graciosa catamaran

La Graciosa was one of our favorite stops on our trip to Lanzarote. This small island to the north of Lanzarote has no roads. Unlike Lanzarote, it offers magnificent white sandy beaches. A trip there will give you another appreciation of the Canary Islands.

An organized tour will pick you up and take you to Orzola, where you’ll board the ferry to La Graciosa. Once in La Graciosa, you’ll board a catamaran to admire the islands from the water and enjoy lunch. You can then enjoy your free time in La Graciosa.

Day 3 – Beach day and fun activities

You can relax on the beach near your hotel.

Beach in Puerto del Carmen

  • Stand-up Paddle – see availability + book

Day 4 – Cesar Manrique

al Campesino

Lanzarote is also famous for being the home of architect and artist César Manrique. Above all, he liked to integrate architecture with the natural environment. It’s thanks to him that there are no major developments on the island and that it retains so much charm with all its little white houses.

Excursions take you to the north of the island to discover many of César Manrique’s creations. They may include

  • The cactus garden , with hundreds of species of cactus and a breathtaking view of the region from the windmill.
  • Jameos del agua – part of the architectural complex designed by Cesar Manrique. It’s fun to explore and watch the little white crabs in the lake. But we have to admit, it’s pretty frustrating not to be able to swim in this incredible pool!
  • The César Manrique Foundation with some of his works of art. It’s his old home and blends in with the lava.
  • Mirador des Rio and its incredible views of La Graciosa.
  • Monumento al Campesino. Beautiful to photograph, but not as fascinating as the other places you’ll see on this tour.

One of our favorite tours includes a bit of everything Cesar Manrique – see program and availability + book

Or see the many options

Day 5 – catamaran to Papagayo

Papagayo

Or you can enjoy a catamaran cruise and admire the coast and beaches from the boat. Lunch on the boat is included. A relaxing day with breathtaking views! Pick-up service available at all major hotels to take you to Puerto Calero, where the boat sails. See program and availability + book

Note: if you’re staying at Playa Blanca, you can walk to these superb beaches (2 km one way). Find out more here.

Option #3 – 5-day stay in Lanzarote: beach focus

No need to explore the island for that. You can simply stay in one of the coastal towns and enjoy the beautiful beaches. However, we think Playa Blanca is your best bet. You’ll find the city’s beaches here, but you can also walk to the many beaches surrounding Papagayo. You have much more choice without driving.

5-day stay in Playa Blanca

Playa Blanca

Located on the south coast of Lanzarote. We liked the size of the town, the beaches and the walk along the water, which is not on the side of the road. There’s a relaxed atmosphere that we really appreciated. The town is divided into several sections around the beaches and, at the eastern end, the Rubicon Marina with its public swimming pool and good restaurants. The beaches are smaller than in the other two towns, but we find them more beautiful. And if you want bigger beaches, you can head to Playa Mujeres.

  • LUXURY RESORT Princesa Yaisa Suite Hotel Resort, a fantastic location and superb design See photos and availability
  • FAMILIAL Gran Castillo Tagoro Family & Fun – Perfect for families (Rooms & Activities) see pictures and availability
  • ALL INCLUSIVE Sandos Papagayo Beach Resort has many facilities and a wide choice of food – 7min walk from the beach see pictures and availability
  • or see the best rated accommodations

5-day stay in Costa Teguise

Costa Teguise

Costa Teguise was developed for tourism. So you’ll find very practical facilities and plenty of parking close to the beaches (which is not the case in other resorts). That’s a big plus!

We think the best thing about Costa Teguise is that it’s so conveniently located, with easy access to all Lanzarote’s attractions. It’s not as charming as Playa Blanca, but we enjoyed its relaxed atmosphere. It’s an ideal place for families with young children.

Costa Teguise has a wide choice of beaches. Playa Bastian is quiet and ideal for families, while Playa Cucharas is very popular for learning to windsurf, with a little wind and a large stretch of water.

  • ADULT ONLY HOTEL Barceló Teguise Beach right next to La Cucharas beach, dinner included, great facilities see pictures and availability
  • ALL INCLUSIVE HD Beach Resort has a modern design and superb sports facilities close to the beach. see pictures and availability
  • APARTMENT Casa Linda just 2 minutes’ walk from the beach and close to everything see pictures and availability

5-day stay in Puerto del Carmen

Puerto del Carmen

Puerto del Carmen is the most famous and largest of all Lanzarote’s seaside resorts. It has everything you need in a seaside resort: beaches, casino, shopping, leisure activities, zoos, golf… The advantage is that you can find accommodation and activities to suit all budgets.

The city is quite long. It takes a long time to walk from the marina to the other end… And we think the walk is less pleasant than at Playa Blanca because you’re close to cars. This is the town with the longest beaches. However, it becomes a bit of a “sardine can” as we say in French, where everyone is lined up and too close together. However, if you avoid the main beach (Playa Grande), you can settle on smaller beaches or rocky coves. All beaches are open to the public, even in front of hotels.

  • LUXURY HOTEL Lani’s Suites de Luxe in Puerto del Carmen (adults only) – clean, stunning design and an extraordinary swimming pool see pictures and availability
  • ALL INCLUSIVE Seaside Los Jameos in Puerto del Carmen – a charming setting and a superb garden see pictures and availability
  • QUIET APARTMENT Riviera Park Apartamento 2A in a quiet complex close to the seafront, modern and practical see pictures and availability

And if you want to see more… Papagayo

If you’re looking for wilder beaches, you can head for the Papagayo beaches. Go first to Playa Blanca in the south of the island. Then walk for 2 kilometers or less, choosing your favorite beach along the way! They are sandy and beautiful. Read more about it.

And if you want to see more… La Graciosa

La Graciosa ferry

If you’re looking for wilder, more adventurous beaches, we recommend the island of La Graciosa. You’ll need to get to Orzola first, then take a ferry that offers breathtaking views and lets you explore this roadless island.

Book your return ferry ticket .

Option #4 – 5-day Lanzarote tour: volcano focus

If you’re fascinated by volcanoes and volcanic activity, we recommend planning an itinerary similar to the first, but with the following changes.

You’ll need a car for this itinerary. See the car rental offers on our favorite platform: Discovercars You can stay wherever you like.

But if you want accommodation with a view of a volcano or lava, take a look:

  • Casa Diama Cottages surrounded by volcanic vineyards – see pictures and availability
  • Finca Curbelo Apartment in a historic Finca, surrounded by volcanoes. – see pictures and availability
  • Petit La Geria Lanzarote 2-bedroom house with spectacular 360° views! – see pictures and availability
  • Eco-villa entre Volcanes 4-bedroom house with breathtaking views and swimming pool. – see pictures and availability

Lodging amid the volcanoes

Similar to the first route:

  • Stop 1 – Hike to Papagayo beach with a view of the volcanoes in the background
  • Change Stop 2 – Hiking in Montana Roja A beautiful walk takes you to the top and around the rim of the volcano, with superb views over the southern tip of Lanzarote. On a clear day, you can also admire the island of Lobos and the north coast of Fuerteventura.

Montana Roja

Day 3 – Volcanic caves

  • Stop 1 – Cactus garden in the middle of lava
  • Stop 2 – Jameos del Agua, the lava tube with crumbling sections
  • Change Stop 3 – Cuevas de los Verdes (instead of Cesar Manrique Foundation) This photo was taken at Cueva de los Verdes. Jesus Soto installed lights in the lava tunnel to create a fascinating experience. We’ll say no more, as we risk spoiling the surprise. But we were very impressed with the experience in the end! But if you suffer from claustrophobia and vertigo, this is not the place for you. See more photos.

Cuevas de los Verdes

Change Stop 4 – Montana Colorada (instead of Mirador del Rio) Another interesting place to see in Lanzarote is Montana Colorada (the colorful mountain). This is another walk that takes you all around the volcano, with signs explaining what you’re seeing. One side of the volcano is bright red, hence its name. Apart from the color, Colorada is also famous for having the largest volcanic bomb (thrown up by the volcano during eruption) on the island. It’s huge. Unfortunately, no one was around when we went for our walk (early in the morning), so we can’t give you an idea of the scale.

Montana Colorada

Day 4 – Los Rodeos and views of La Graciosa

Day 4 is completely different from the first itinerary.

Stop 1 – another volcano hike

Los Rodeos

If you like hiking around volcanoes, you can add another hike to your week. For example:

  • climb to the top of another volcano for a breathtaking view: Los Rodeos
  • walk around a white volcano such as Montana Blanca
  • La Corona in northern Lanzarote. Its highest point is 609 metres.

Stop 2 – visit to the Timanfaya visitor center

Timanfaya visitor center

If you’d like to find out more about Lanzarote’s volcanic nature, visit the Visitor Center, located just outside the park. We recommend visiting the center during the hottest part of the day. It’s a great way to refresh yourself and learn more about the fascinating world around you.

You have a scale representation of the park and the alignment of volcanoes. You’ll also find photos and explanations of the region’s geology, the history of eruptions and how flora and fauna come back after such a cataclysm.

Stop 3 – Mirador del Rio

Located on the Risco de Famara, the mirador overlooks the island of La Graciosa at over 475 m altitude. It was once a 19th-century military fort. César Manrique transformed it in the 1970s so that it was camouflaged in the rocks, offering an incredible view of the cliff, the island and the stretch of sea in between, called El rio.

From here, you can clearly see the various volcanic cones on the island of La Graciosa.

Day 5 – La Graciosa volcanoes

On this other day, we recommend a trip to the island of La Graciosa to see its volcanic cones and volcanic features.

Mirador del Rio

If you love volcanoes, we recommend a tour of the island to see Playa Francesa and the lava arch at Caleton de los Arcos. See more photos

Caleton de los Arcos

Stop 3 – The caletones of the north coast

If you still have the energy, along the north coast (easy stops on the way back), you can admire the caletones with a lagoon, and very dark volcanic rocks contrasting with the white sand.

5 days all-inclusive on Lanzarote

If you simply want to enjoy a resort in the sun, that’s also possible. Lanzarote has a good choice of all-inclusive resorts. For greater flexibility, buy your own flights: Compare available flights .

Then choose the hotel that suits your needs. Think about it:

How to travel: One week in Lanzarote

Travel tips for the volcanic island

Sunset at Famara Beach in Lanzarote

(Last Updated: April 2023) . Are you wondering which Canary Island might be the right choice for you? Choose (at least) one week in Lanzarote if you’re up for: Rough and picturesque volcanic landscapes , appealing architecture & design, interesting experiences & sights as well as unique boutique hotels and culinary delights. Especially the focus on local artisanal products and the very unique architecture (that steers clear of any high rises and ugly resorts) are reasons to select Lanzarote over Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Tenerife in comparison. After having visited all four of the larger Canary Islands Lanzarote still remains our favorite!

Timanfaya National Park Lanzarote

The volcanic landscapes are one of the main reasons to visit Lanzarote.

Lanzarote has many advantages over the other Canary Islands. Gran Canaria is much more developed touristically and has some ugly architectural mishaps. The same goes for Fuerteventura, which is truly lacking the choice of interesting hotels, that Lanzarote offers! And then of course there’s the iconic landscapes. If you love volcanoes & don’t want to stay in one of the high rises that call themselves hotels, Lanzarote really is the place to go.

Haría Lanzarote

This is as green as Lanzarote gets – palm trees and cacti grow here. But there’s no forests.

How to travel Lanzarote

Lanzarote isn’t a very big island (although the locals might ask you if you’re crazy, when you want to cross the whole island in one day). From one tip to the other it takes you about 1,5 hours of (comfortable) driving. We therefore recommend to rent a car (Price for one week: we paid around 200 Euros, excl. gas – prices might have increased since our visit a few years ago and also after Covid-19).

Rental Car Lanzarote

We recommend renting an SUV if you also want to drive a bit off-road to hidden coastal spots.

Street through Timanfaya National Park Lanzarote

The dirt roads are exceptions though – the main roads on the island are in great shape!

Where to stay in lanzarote.

There’s basically two ways of enjoying the island to the maximum:

  • ) You can stay close to the seaside and enjoy ocean views. (Check our hotel review of  La Isla Y El Mar Hotel )
  • ) Or you can decide to stay central  and enjoy remoteness and quaint landscapes. (Check our hotel review of: Buenavista Country Suites Lanzarote )

We recommend to combine the two experiences!

Terrace view of room 606 La Isla Y El Mar Boutique Hotel Lanzarote

Our room with ocean view at La Isla Y El Mar Hotel in Lanzarote.

Stay at the beach for a couple of days and enjoy a bit of ocean front relaxation and chilling at the pool. Then move to the vineyards of the “La Geria” region for a complete change of scenery. This will give you a taste of the slow life & wine culture of Lanzarote. With this combination you’ll get the maximum out of your one week in Lanzarote.

Suite Este at Buenavista Country Suites Lanzarote

The suites of Buenavista Country Suites Lanzarote are located in the middle of the volcanic landscapes.

What to do in lanzarote.

There’s a couple of things that you can do – even on an island that feels like it’s virtually made from volcanic sand and stones. We recommend a fair amount of coastal explorations and water sports – combined with tours of the interior of the island.

View of La Graciosa Island from the north of Lanzarote

Our top 5 experiences of lanzarote.

There’s a few classics, that draw most visitors to Lanzarote each year. Among the favourite activities are road biking and hiking . You’ll see a lot of people riding bikes on the streets over the rolling hills of Lanzarote. And then there’s various hiking paths around or on top of the countless volcanic cones. But there’s more to do – and these are our favourites:

  • Take a Sailing trip
  • Study the legacy of César Manrique
  • Explore the volcanic landscapes
  • A sunset over La Graciosa island
  • (Kite) Surfing at Famara Beach

A sailing trip of Lanzarote

1.) Take a Sailing trip on Lanzarote

Lanzarote (as it’s sister island Fuerteventura) is well known for the heavy winds . The island is covered in a constant stream of air. This might be annoying on a sandy hill, but it’s perfect for a day (or a couple of hours) of sailing. We took a two hour private sailing trip with Captain Manuel from “Sailing Tour Lanzarote” .

Private Sailing Tour of Lanzarote

We paid 250 Euro for the 2 hour private excursion . The trip started from Puerto del Carmen and we spent most of the time sailing towards Isla de Lobos. In two hours you cannot really reach any other place, but sailing is mostly about spending time on the water anyhow 😉 If you take a longer trip (4 hours or more) you can even eat lunch on the boat or go snorkelling in one of the bays along the shoreline.

2. Study the legacy of César Manrique

It’s quite inspiring to learn how one person can change a whole island. The artist and architect César Manrique had a vision for Lanzarote . He wanted the island to be a pioneer in sustainable tourism. Therefore he started his foundation in the early 1980s and worked closely with the government to forbid developments of high rise hotel buildings and distracting billboard ads on the roads.

El Diablo Restaurant at Timanfaya National Park

This restaurant building is one of the projects by César Manrique.

There’s a number of César Manrique projects that you can visit during your stay in Lanzarote. Basically you can choose between a couple of museums, his private home, restaurants, a cactus garden and many more. Either way we recommend to buy one of (or better both) combination tickets.

  • Combination ticket “César Manrique Foundation”: This ticket costs 15 Euros and combines the famous Volcano House (a former private home of César, that was partially built into volcanic caves) and his last private home called “Palm Grove” in Haría  (with all of his personal belongings and his studio still there basically untouched).

Volcano house

Volcano House by César Manrique Lanzarote

The Volcano House was home to Manrique for many years, before he transformed it into the foundation and it’s now a museum.

Palm grove house: césar manrique house museum in haría.

César Manrique house in Haría

The César Manrique house in Haría is where he spent his last years. This feels much more like his personal space, with all his private belongings still there untouched. (Photography is only allowed in the exterior spaces).

Our personal tip: We enjoyed the visit of both houses and definitely recommend the combination ticket. The house in Haría feels really personal and private and you even get a glimpse of his studio. The foundation on the other hand shows how well he incorporated architecture into the natural landscape of the island. Make sure to go late in the afternoon (or first thing in the morning) for some quiet during the visit!

Volcano House by César Manrique Lanzarote

While building the Volcano house Manrique discovered the volcanic caves and decided to use them as living space.

  • Combination ticket CACT Lanzarote: The so called CACT (Centres of Art, Culture and Tourism of Lanzarote) unite 9 different “attractions” and you can buy different combination tickets. We decided for a 6-centre ticket for 33 Euros and ended up visiting these 5 places: The Jardín de Cactus , Jameos del Agua , Cueva de los Verdes , Montañas del Fuego and the Mirador del Río . The ticket is valid for 14 days, so you don’t have to visit everything in one day.

Jameos del Agua

The Jameos del Agua are located close the coastline. Our personal highlight: You have to get out of your shoes and wade through water to enter the building .

Jameos del Agua by César Manrique in Lanzarote

Jardín de Cactus

The “Jardín de Cactus” features hundreds of different cacti species and you will be tempted to touch them all. Be warned: This is quite overrun by tourists, better come early morning or late in the afternoon!

Jardín de Cactus by César Manrique in Lanzarote

Cueva de los Verdes

The cave system was our least favourite of all César Manrique projects . Why? You can only enter with a guided tour together with approx. 30-40 other visitors. This makes it less calming and spiritual then his other buildings. Other than that it’s worth a trip as you’ll get to cool off as well 😉

Cueva de los Verdes by César Manrique in Lanzarote

Mirador del Río

The Mirador del Río features some stunning vistas of La Graciosa island . But: You can also get those views without paying the entrance fee (find out more below under item 4)! We still believe it’s worth the visit for the architecture.

Mirador del Río by César Manrique in Lanzarote

3. Explore the volcanic landscapes

One of the most common ways to visit the volcanic landscapes of Lanzarote is to take a bus tour at the Montañas del Fuego (located within Timanfaya National Park). Unfortunately, this tour is not accessible for private cars. You can only visit the National Park with your own car, but won’t be able to access all the roads (actually you can only take the one road that leads up to the El Diablo restaurant).

Mirador del Rio Lanzarote

As we are not big fans of bus tours with dozens of other tourists we decided for a private trip . The road up to the top of the hill where the restaurant is located takes around 5 minutes and isn’t too spectacular. Also there’s no way to park your car alongside the road to take a walk around. Basically you pay the entrance fee for “Las Montañas del Fuego” (9 euros without the combination ticket!) to drive to a restaurant. Up there we got lucky as there was a bus tour that had just arrived. This way we at least got to see the show, which consists of a display of the heat and power of the (still active) volcano.

El Diablo Restaurant at Timanfaya National Park

The guides at El Diablo set a ball of straw on fire, by simply pushing it down a hole in the ground. And then there’s pipes in the ground, that evaporate water into a fountain of steam  within a second. It’s quite impressive to get a sense of the power of the heat in the underground, but don’t expect more than a 3 minute show.

Timanfaya National Park

We recommend that you take the road to the western, coastal part of Timanfaya National Park towards “Playa de la Madera” . Here you don’t have to pay any entrance fee and enjoy scenic views of the landscape. Plus you can hike alongside the coast through volcanic stone (that actually feels and even sounds more like black glass scattered all everywhere on the ground).

Playa de la Madera Lanzarote

The volcanic cones of Timanfaya National Park in the background – as seen from Playa de la Madera.

Playa de la Madera Lanzarote

We recommend a hike alongside the coastline of Playa de la Madera at sunset.

4. a sunset over la graciosa island.

The Northern part of Lanzarote is part of the Unesco Biosphere Park and protected for it’s landscape and wildlife. Therefore you won’t find any bigger cities or hotels up in the North. Most visitors of Lanzarote come to the North for the “ Mirador Del Rio ” – the famous lookout platform and restaurant built by César Manrique. But you don’t have to pay the entrance fee to get an amazing view!

Mirador del Rio Lanzarote

You can see neighbouring La Graciosa island from the Northern tip of Lanzarote. But not just from the official Mirador!

Unfortunately El Mirador is quite overrun by tourists and also closes before sunset. Therefore we decided to spend the sunset just about 300 meters South of the Mirador Del Río at the cliffs. Here you can park your car next to the street and enjoy the views of La Graciosa island while the sun sets. If you’re lucky you’ll also have clouds rolling in over the edge of the cliff – which is quite a spectacle.

The cliffs south of Mirador del Rio

The cliffs south of Mirador del Rio – clouds are rolling in (you can spot our car in the distance).

Sunset over La Graciosa as seen from Lanzarote

When the sun sets you’ll get some magnificent views of La Graciosa island.

Our personal tip: Bring a picnic and enjoy it up there (as there’s no really good restaurants in the nearer vicinity – see our blogpost with  vegetarian restaurant tips for Lanzarote ).

5. (Kite) Surfing at Famara Beach

Famara Beach is famous for it’s wind and ideal surfing conditions. This long and wide stretch of beach is not so popular amongst swimmers and families because of it’s higher waves and zero sun or wind protection . So either you want to go surfing (or kite surfing) yourself, or you prefer watching them at sunset. But don’t go here for a day of beach relaxation – there are calmer beaches in the southern part of Lanzarote (Playa de Papagayo, Playa Mujeres, Playa del Pozo, etc.).

Road to Famara Beach Lanzarote

The road to Famara Beach is already stunning!

We spent two evenings and sunsets at Famara Beach , because of it’s incredible views and spectacular mountainous scenery.

Famara beach Lanzarote

Surfers and Kite surfers love Famara beach, but it’s not ideal for swimmers!

Famara Beach Apartment Lanzarote

If you’re into architecture definitely check out the apartment buildings at Famara Beach!

Other tips for lanzarote.

What else is there to do? You can visit one of the many vineyards of La Geria and discover how the grapes are grown in these arid conditions. (Of course you can also attend a wine tasting!).

La Gerja vineyards Lanzarote

We also recommend to visit the ceramic studios at Teseguite to understand more about the local craftmanship and design background (and maybe bring a true artisanal souvenir home with you).

The “Atelier + Ceramica” studio in Teseguite  is run by lovely artistic couple.

Restaurant tips for Lanzarote

We compiled a list of our favourite restaurants in Lanzarote , which also offer vegetarian options . It’s a bit of a challenge to find vegetarian food, but there are some options everywhere (think potatoes and mojo, a green or red sauce). Other than that Canarian cuisine centers a lot around meat dishes.

El Chupadero Lanzarote

Our favourite restaurant in Lanzarote: El Chupadero.

Lanzarote vs. the rest of the canary islands.

These were all our tips for one week on Lanzarote. If you’re still considering which Canary island to choose , then let us explain a few of the key differences.

If you prefer hiking in the woods, whale watching or watching stars on the clearest night sky of Europe  you might want to consider going to Tenerife instead (read our blogpost about what to do in Tenerife if you just answered this question with yes).

El Teide National Park in Tenerife

Tenerife’s El Teide is the highest mountain in Spain and one of the main reasons why people visit Tenerife.

Fuerteventura on the other hand is even drier than Lanzarote , you’ll hardly spot any green on this island. It’s a hot spot for surfers and therefore offers a lot of hip cafés with vegan food. The downside of Fuerteventura is that there’s really no beautiful hotels. Yes, you’ll find a few large all inclusive resorts and some small bed and breakfast, but there’s no exciting boutique hotel or yoga stay. Most visitors flock to Fuerteventura in their camping vans or rent homes for a longer stay. Lanzarote is better equipped in the hotel department for sure!

When compared to Lanzarote Fuerteventura is even more dry – and has one disadvantage: no nice hotels!

Hiking in Lanzarote: Six incredible trails to hike on the island + trail maps

Lanzarote, set in the Canary Islands, isn’t really the first place you think of when thinking of adventure. The island has developed a little bit of a reputation as somewhere to go for party or beach package holidays. However, look a little further and you’ll find an incredible, volcanic landscape with an interesting array of hiking trails just waiting to be explored.

Hiking in Lanzarote: Six incredible trails to hike on the island + trail maps - Fayandmattgraphic

When you delve a little bit further into how the island looks, you’ll see that there is a whole lot of adventure to be had in this incredible, volcanic landscape. It truly is like nothing we’ve ever experienced before and is one of our absolute favourite places full of beautiful hikes and panoramic views. What’s also great is, if your experience is anything like ours, you’ll find yourself completely alone on pretty much all your hikes, making for a great experience of solitude.

𝘐𝘮𝘢𝘨𝘦 𝘋𝘦𝘴𝘤𝘳𝘪𝘱𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯: Matt walks along a path through a volcano - with oranges, reds, browns, greens and natural earthy coloured rocks all around him. ⁣

Within the Canary Islands, Lanzarote is known for its volcanoes with its last eruption being in 1824. It’s classed as dormant although in some areas of Timanfaya National Park, you can still feel the heat under the surface (although these are carefully protected areas and many areas of the park are inaccessible to the public or without tours and guides).

When you arrive on Lanzarote, we’d recommend taking your hire car and driving to the Visitor center situated in the National Park. From here, you can pay a relatively small fee to drive up a private road to load onto a bus where you’ll be taken around the twists and turns of the most protected areas of the National Park. This is a great experience in its own right with incredible views, otherworldly craters and you’ll really be glad you did it, even if it does feel a little touristy.

Generally, getting around Lanzarote is very easy, and of course the hikes below are only really a tiny amount of what is available on the island. The island is quite small, so it often means very little driving to get to all of the different hikes – and most of the hikes that we’ve included below are all relatively short distances from each other. We stayed in a place called La Asomada and many of the hikes included were roughly 10 to 15 minutes away in the car – a really welcome experience if you’re often used to driving long distances to hikes, meaning you can spend more time connecting with nature and doing the things you love.

Image description: A landscape image. Fay and Matt mostly fill the frame and have their backs to the camera. They are both wearing heavy backpacks and are looking out at a view of a volcanic landscape. Matt has his right arm over Fay’s shoulders and…

A word of warning, but absolutely not one to put you off – it does get incredibly hot on Lanzarote. The thing that makes Lanzarote great is the fact that it has a fairly temperate climate all year round, making it an ideal place to go for an adventure in the European or North American winter months. In winter, you can expect temperatures anywhere between 15c and 23c on average every day. The first time we visited four years ago, we didn’t wear a jacket once. Interesting, when we returned in July, the temperatures were on average higher, ranging anywhere between 24c and 32c on our visit. What was different was that on our trip in winter four years ago, we had bright blue, crisp skies every day. On our summer adventure, the weather was a little changeable. When we visited, there was a storm passing, so this likely had something to do with it, but we found we actually preferred how the weather felt in winter.

It also has a habit of getting very windy on the island. This is largely due to the fact that it is a small island, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean with very little shelter due to its relatively low-lying topography. You’ll generally experience some degree of wind whenever you visit, but because of the storm that was passing through, some days we experienced winds up to 50mph. Which was intense and made some of the hikes a little tiresome when walking into a headwind! You’ll be able to notice in our documentary that our hair is blowing all over the place and many of our interviews are met with a marriage of wind and voice (haha).

The wind, however, can actually provide a welcome respite from the close heat, but do not let the fact that it is windy fool you – you need to be wearing sun cream or protecting your skin from the sun in whatever way works for you. We learnt a little the hard way with this and forgot to reapply cream one day and came back very red!

gift ideas for hikers and backpackers

Talking of the relatively low-lying topography, we heard it mentioned when we first looked into visiting the Canary Islands that Lanzarote was a great place to go on your first adventure trip. We’d agree – the mountains aren’t crazy high and there is something to suit a wide range of skills and experience levels all whilst taking in amazing scenes and panoramic views. Even if you’re more experienced in the outdoors, we still think there is a lot for you on the island of Lanzarote, but this is also a fantastic location to visit if you perhaps want to try mixing hiking with relaxing on the beach. Or if you have different ideas of what you want from a trip now to your family. None of the hikes we’ve outlined here are particularly long apart from the Timanfaya Coastal Path, so most can be done within a couple of hours, meaning that the adventure experience doesn’t necessarily need to take over the whole trip. If this is the case for you, we’d recommend setting out earlyish to do the hike, meaning you’ll come back with a big chunk of the day to spend with the group you’re travelling with.

Below, you’ll find our hiking guide, in the order we did them on the incredible island of Lanzarote.

𝘐𝘮𝘢𝘨𝘦 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘤𝘳𝘪𝘱𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯: Landscape image. Fay is walking along a path through a volcanic, mountainous landscape with her back to the camera. There are many earthy colours that make up the scene - such as browns, reds and oranges. It is sli…

Montana Tinasoria Hiking Route

What you’ll experience: A close drive from Puerto Del Carmen – as you wind up the path that hugs into the mountain, you’ll be generously greeted by extensive grapevines growing in holes in the lava (which we learnt is to protect the fruit from the strong winds on the island). This is a fantastic hike to introduce you to the offerings of Lanzarote. It eases you into the mountain topography of the island whilst proving stunning views of the Martian style landscape, with a view into the National Park where you’ll set foot tomorrow. This hike is exposed, with far reaching panoramic views, like all hikes on the island, so on very hot days it can be quite hard work. We’d recommend lots of sun cream, a hat and plenty of water (as an estimate, we took 3l each and drank pretty much all of it). The hike to the top of the mountain is really lovely with incredible views. If you’re used to the Peak District in the UK, or even the South Downs, this Lanzarote hike should feel well within reach – a truly beautiful hike.

Montana Los Rodeos Hiking Route

What you’ll experience: Like a number of the hiking paths in Lanzarote and the Timanfaya National Park, the walk in at the beginning until you get to the base of the crater certainly isn’t to be sniffed at, but it is part and parcel of the topography here. The views on this volcano hike on the walk in are fantastic – lava fields for days and gives you time to get your legs warmed up for a steep, but short climb up to the top of Montana Los Rodeos. The path down from the summit retraces your steps from the way up, and as a walk down becomes a steep, slightly loose scree slope. Don’t let this put you off, just pay extra attention to your footing. We actually feel like you get better views on the hike back down, and the views out as you’re heading down from the summit which will be on your left are absolutely spectacular! Allow plenty of time for this hike – you’ll be stopping to take photographs and take in the scenery pretty often.

Image description: A landscape image. The image is of a vast volcano and you can see into the caldera to the base of the volcano. A wide angle shot that shows a vast landscape of volcanoes and lava fields in the background. The main colour palette i…

Montana Colorada Hiking Route

What you’ll experience: You’ll notice from the route when you load into your mapping software that it goes up to the summit, then down, then back round a different way. It might seem a little counter intuitive, but the extra effort (which is mere km’s rather than a sizeable distance) is well worth it to catch the views on this breathtaking volcano hike in all their beauty. Even if you don’t fancy going to the top of the volcano, you’ll still have a brilliant experience around the base of the crater – every angle looks different and again, you’ll be stopping lots for photo breaks of Timanfaya National Park and to marvel at what an incredible world we live in. If you look at a map of Lanzarote, you’ll see that there is massive potential from this hike to join onto other calderas, volcanoes and mountains as many of the trails connect, making the opportunity to have a much longer day.

Montana Cuervo Hiking Route

What you’ll experience: Just ever so slightly down the road from Montana Colorada in Timanfaya National Park you’ll find an incredible experience – you get to go into an actual volcano. Even though it is a short and simple hike with relatively little ascent or descent, this is one of our favourite volcano hikes on the whole island. The colours you see, the different textures you encounter, you’ll get sucked up into a beautiful, rich tapestry like you’ve never seen before. Leave plenty of time for this hike – especially in the crater where you’ll find your eyes enticed by any number of beautiful, other worldly formations. Even though this is one of the more popular hikes on Lanzarote, we really feel like this is a must do experience! There’s a great path pretty much all the way round too.

Caldera Blanca Hiking Route

What you’ll experience: Probably one of the most famous hikes on Lanzarote, this is a must do but it also makes for a beautiful hike. This hiking path is so prominent, firstly because the caldera itself is white and cream in colour making it stand out from some of the other prominent peaks in the area, but also because it has intact, polished walls which is very different too. There are a few sections on this path where you’re walking along a ridge of the crater rim and do feel a little exposed, but also very manageable. Be warned again like with all hikes on the island, this hike is exposed with no shade at all so come prepared with lots of water, sun cream and come to terms with the idea that you’re most likely going to get a little sweaty. This is a truly beautiful hike and the spectacular views from the rim of the caldera are breathtaking – one of the best Lanzarote has to offer!

Timanfaya Coastal Path

What you’ll experience: This hike provides quite a different experience from most of the other hikes and takes in the ‘journey along the way’ rather than being about a particular summit. You couldn’t ask for a better way to explore that notion and spend a day. The great thing about this hike as well, because it is a linear path, is that if you’re not feeling up to the whole hike, you can cut it short, turning back whenever feels good for you. The views on one side of the bright blue ocean crashing against the contrasting black volcanic rocks with the Timanfaya National Park mountains on your other side is truly an unforgettable experience. Starting off at one of the most spectacular views, picturesque beaches and finishing in the iconic El Golfo makes this hike varied, interesting and one not to miss whilst you’re visiting Lanzarote.

Oscar nominee Dev Patel (Lion, Slumdog Millionaire) achieves an astonishing, tour-de-force feature directing debut with an action thriller about one man’s quest for vengeance against the corrupt leaders who murdered his mother and continue to systemically victimize the poor and powerless.

As his childhood trauma boils over, his mysteriously scarred hands unleash an explosive campaign of retribution to settle the score with the men who took everything from him.
