Numerous American Express cards offer travel protections that can take the headache out of your vacations. However, the coverage you get (and the limits of said coverage) differ by card. Rather than trying to remember all of this on your own, we will guide you through the travel protections offered by American Express cards.

This guide provides a comprehensive, detailed look at the variety of travel protections offered across the American Express card portfolio. Each section outlines a type of coverage and the cards offering this coverage. We also include coverage limits and any additional caveats to keep in mind.

Here's what you need to know about American Express travel insurance coverage.

Trip delay insurance

Trip delay insurance covers you when you encounter travel delays. This could be a delayed flight due to mechanical issues or an unexpected overnight due to a weather-related cancellation. Other reasons are covered, but individual policies vary in what they do and don't cover. If the reason for your delay is not specifically mentioned in your policy, assume that it's not covered.

With trip delay protection, there are two different "levels" of coverage, depending on the card you carry.

Level 1: Higher-end cards

Some of American Express' top products offer trip delay reimbursement of up to $500 per covered trip that is delayed for more than six hours, capped at two claims per eligible card per 12 consecutive months.*

This protection becomes effective when you purchase a ticket using any of the following cards:

Level 2: Mid-tier cards

Other American Express cards offer trip delay reimbursement of up to $300 per covered trip that is delayed for more than 12 hours, capped at two claims per 12 consecutive months.*

Trip cancellation and interruption insurance

This type of coverage is for situations in which your trip is canceled or interrupted (meaning you started the trip but must end it to return home). As a result, you're forced to forfeit prepaid, nonrefundable reservations. Again, be sure that your policy mentions your specific reason for it to be covered.*

All Amex cards with this benefit provide the same level of protection. If your trip is canceled or interrupted for a covered reason, you can receive a maximum of $10,000 per covered trip and a maximum of $20,000 per eligible card in a 12-month period.

Premium Global Assist Hotline

Like the benefit above, eligible cardholders for certain premium Amex cards can rely on the Global Assist Hotline 24/7 for medical, legal, financial or other select emergency services coordination and assistance services while traveling more than 100 miles from home. With the Premium benefit, emergency medical transportation assistance and related services may be provided at no cost.*

Baggage insurance plan

Baggage insurance applies to covered persons for eligible lost, damaged or stolen baggage during travel on a common carrier vehicle (such as a plane, train, ship or bus) when the entire fare for a ticket on the trip (one-way or round trip) is charged to an eligible card.

This benefit has two different "levels" of coverage, depending on the card you carry.

Some of American Express' top products offer baggage insurance coverage of up to $2,000 for checked baggage and up to a combined maximum of $3,000 for checked and carry-on baggage. This coverage is in excess of coverage provided by the common carrier. Coverage is subject to a $3,000 aggregate limit per covered trip.*

For New York state residents, there is a $2,000 per bag/per suitcase limit for each covered person, with a maximum of $10,000 aggregate for all covered persons per covered trip.*

Other American Express cards offer baggage insurance coverage of up to $1,250 for carry-on baggage and up to $500 for checked baggage. This coverage is in excess of coverage provided by the common carrier.*

For New York state residents, there is a maximum of $10,000 aggregate for all covered persons per covered trip.*

Car rental loss and damage insurance

Car rental loss and damage insurance applies to the theft of or damage to most rental vehicles when you use an eligible card to reserve and pay for the entire eligible vehicle rental and decline the collision damage waiver or similar option offered by the rental car company. Note that this product provides secondary coverage and does not include liability coverage. Not all vehicle types or rentals are covered, and geographic restrictions apply.

The Platinum Card® from American Express comes with a long list of perks and benefits , especially for high-earning frequent travellers. Travel insurance is offered by most travel credit cards as a complimentary perk, and the Platinum Card® from American Express card is no exception. This card includes coverage for emergency medical, trip cancellation and interruption, flight delay, baggage protection , and even coverage in the event your accommodations are burgled.

Keep in mind that travel insurance is designed to cover losses from “sudden and unforeseeable circumstances” and that the card only covers the first 15 days of travel. You can take as many trips as you’d like, but you must return home first between trips.

The Platinum Card® from American Express travel insurance is underwritten by Royal & Sun Alliance Insurance Co. of Canada, except for the travel accident insurance coverage, which is underwritten by Chubb Life Insurance Company of Canada.

Unlike separate travel insurance policies , you don’t need to apply for travel insurance with The Platinum Card® from American Express as it’s an automatic perk of the card. However, there are requirements in place if you want to access the card’s insurance benefits:

  • You need to pay for your trip with the card.
  • You need to be 65 years old or younger.
  • You need to be a resident of Canada.
  • You must have current coverage under your province or territory’s government health insurance plan (GHIP).

Here are the key types of travel insurance coverage offered by the The Platinum Card® from American Express credit card:

Out of province/country emergency medical insurance: If you get ill or are injured on your trip, travel medical insurance can pay for emergency medical expenses, up to the $5 million covered limit.

Emergency medical treatment coverage for the The Platinum Card® from American Express card includes:

  • Hospital accommodation up to a semi-private room
  • Treatment by a physician or surgeon
  • Outpatient hospital charges
  • X-rays and other diagnostic tests
  • Use of an operating room, intensive care unit, anaesthesia and surgical dressings
  • Prescription drugs (except for a chronic medical condition)
  • Local ground ambulance services or taxi/rideshare fare in a medical emergency
  • Rental or purchase of a hospital-type bed, wheelchair, brace, crutches and other medical appliances
  • Registered private nursing
  • Emergency dental expenses due to a blow to the face, plus continued treatment upon your return (within 90 days of the injury)
  • Emergency relief of dental pain
  • Professional services, such as that from a physiotherapist, chiropractor, osteopath, chiropodist or podiatrist
  • Return home due to a medical emergency
  • Return of your remains, plus associated costs
  • Additional meal and accommodation expenses after your return home is delayed due to you or your travelling companion’s medical emergency
  • Bringing a bedside companion to you if you are hospitalized for more than three days (or immediately if you are under age 21 or physically handicapped and dependent on your bedside companion for support)
  • Return of your vehicle or rental due to a medical emergency
  • Return of dependent children due to a medical emergency if you are hospitalized more than 24 hours or due to repatriation
  • Return of excess baggage due to a medical emergency

Trip cancellation insurance: If you cancel your trip before your departure date for a covered risk listed in your insurance policy, trip cancellation insurance can reimburse you for prepaid, non-refundable costs, such as airfare or hotels.

Covered risks include:

  • Your emergency medical condition, or the emergency medical condition of your travelling companion
  • Hospitalization or emergency medical condition of an immediate family member, business partner, key employee or caregiver
  • Your death, or death of an immediate family member, business partner, key employee, caregiver or travelling companion, family of your travelling companion or your host at your destination
  • A government advisory to “avoid non-essential travel” or “avoid all travel”
  • Transfer by your employer for you or your spouse
  • Loss of you or your spouse’s job
  • Cancellation of a business meeting
  • Being summoned to serve as a reservist, military, police, fire or medical personnel
  • An event that renders your home or place of business inoperative
  • Quarantine or hijacking of you, your spouse or dependent child
  • You or your spouse being called for jury duty, being subpoenaed as a witness or being required to appear in a judicial proceeding

Trip interruption insurance: Trip interruption insurance kicks in once you’re on your trip if you have to return home earlier than expected due to a covered risk and can pay for a last-minute flight home and/or reimburse you for the unused portion of your travel arrangements that are non-refundable and non-transferable. This insurance also provides benefits, such as reimbursement for accommodation, meals, telephone and rides, if your return home is delayed due to a covered reason.

The covered risks are similar to those for trip cancellation insurance, but also include:

  • Delay of a private car causing a missed connection or flight due to mechanical failure of that transportation, weather, earthquake, volcanic eruption, traffic accident or an emergency road closure
  • Delay of your common carrier causing a missed connection due to the above unexpected issues
  • Delay of your common carrier causing a delayed departure due to the above unexpected issues causing you to miss your scheduled cruise or tour

Like emergency medical insurance and trip cancellation insurance, trip interruption coverage is for sudden and unforeseeable circumstances. To ensure you’re able to access your coverage when you need it most, it’s crucial to review the complete list of covered risks to understand what is and is not covered and under what circumstances.

Flight and baggage delay insurance: This insurance provides coverage in the event that your flight and/or baggage is delayed, or if you suffer a loss due to a hotel burglary.

The coverage and benefits are as follows:

  • Missed connection: If a delay of an incoming flight causes a missed connection and no alternative onward transportation is available within four hours of deplaning, this insurance will pay up to the benefit limit for expenses related to meals, accommodations and rides incurred within 48 hours of deplaning.
  • Delayed flight departure or denied boarding: If your departing flight is delayed for four hours or more or if you’re denied boarding due to overbooking and no alternative transportation is available within four hours of your scheduled departure, this insurance will pay up to the benefit limit for expenses related to meals, accommodations and rides incurred within 48 hours of the delay or denied boarding.
  • Emergency baggage delay: If your checked baggage is not delivered within six hours of arriving at your destination, this insurance provides reimbursement for expenses related to essential clothing and toiletries that are purchased within the first four days after arrival and before your bags are returned.

The maximum aggregate limit for the three coverages above is $1,000.

Hotel burglary insurance: If your accommodations are burgled due an illegal forced entry, this coverage will reimburse you for the loss of personal items, excluding cash. The maximum amount payable is $1,000 per burglary.

Lost or stolen baggage insurance: This insurance can compensate you up to your policy limit if your baggage is lost or stolen. Specifically, this insurance reimburses you for loss or damage to owned or borrowed baggage and personal effects, whether in transit as checked baggage or carried on board, as long as your full fare was paid with the card. The maximum amount payable is $1,000 for all insured persons combined. The amount includes a $300 limit for jewellery and a $250 limit for golf clubs, including golf bags.

This coverage does not cover loss or damage of eyeglasses or contact lenses, artificial teeth or limbs, cameras and camera equipment, electronics including laptops and cell phones, sports equipment (except gear for golf, skiing or tennis), fragile objects, such as china or glass, art or antiques, business items, household effects, perishable goods, animals, furs, cash, securities, or valuable papers and documents.

Travel accident insurance: This coverage offers compensation in the event of accidental death or catastrophic injury from a flight accident during your trip, including the loss of limbs or eyesight. Injury can be sustained during a flight or during alternative transportation due to a delayed or rerouted flight. The amount paid out depends on the severity of the loss or dismemberment and the insurer will only pay for one loss. The maximum amount payable is $500,000 per covered person and the benefit amount paid is for the greatest loss.

Car rental theft and damage insurance: This insurance covers theft, loss or damage to a rental vehicle for up to 48 consecutive days when you use your card to pay for the rental. In the event of theft or damage, you or the rental agency will be compensated up to the actual cash value of the vehicle (maximum $85,000 MSRP). It’s important to note there are a number of rental vehicles excluded from this coverage, including vans or cargo vans, pick-up trucks, off-road vehicles, motorcycles, trailers or RVs and antique cars. You will still require your own third-party liability, personal injury and damage to property car insurance coverage.

We’ve highlighted key benefits of the travel insurance offered by The Platinum Card® from American Express.

(i) $1,000 aggregate maximum for flight delay insurance and baggage delay insurance.

In general, a pre-existing condition is defined as any sickness, injury or medical condition, whether or not diagnosed by a physician, that you showed signs or symptoms or received medical attention for before the start of your coverage.

The Platinum Card® from American Express Travel Insurance will not pay any expenses related to any medical condition that is not stable in the 90 days before you leave on your trip.

A medical condition is considered stable when there has been:

  • No new treatment, medical management or prescribed medication, and
  • No change in treatment, medical management or medication (with some exceptions), and
  • No new, frequent or severe symptoms or findings, and
  • No new test results or results showing a deterioration, and
  • No investigations or future investigations initiated or recommended, and
  • No hospitalization or referral to a specialist, made or recommended

In addition, The Platinum Card® from American Express will not pay any benefits for the following:

  • Your heart condition (with or without diagnosis) that has not been stable in the 90 days before your departure or for which you have taken nitroglycerin more than once per week for the relief of angina pain.
  • Your lung condition (with or without a diagnosis) that has not been stable in the 90 days before your departure or for which you have been treated with home oxygen or taken oral steroids, such as prednisone or prednisolone, for any lung condition.

In addition to pre-existing conditions, The Platinum Card® from American Express Travel Insurance does not pay expenses related to the following general exclusions:

  • Any medical condition for which future investigation or treatment is planned before your trip
  • Continued treatment of a medical emergency, included any heart or lung condition, if you chose not to return home after receiving emergency care
  • Any services that are not related to an emergency
  • Routine care of a chronic condition
  • Routine prenatal care
  • Pregnancy, complications or birth of a child in the nine weeks before or after your expected delivery date, or any child born on a trip
  • Invasive testing or surgery without prior approval, or any other benefits that require prior authorization that did not receive authorization
  • Expenses related to participation as a professional athlete in a sporting event, including training or practice; any motorized race or motorized speed contest; or high-risk activities including scuba diving without a basic scuba designation, hang gliding, rock climbing, paragliding, skydiving, parachuting, bungee jumping, mountain climbing, rodeo, heli-skiing, any downhill skiing or snowboarding outside marked trails, any cycling racing event or ski racing event
  • The commission of or attempt of a criminal act
  • Intentional self-inflicted injury, suicide or attempt to commit suicide
  • Any medical condition related to chronic use of alcohol or drugs, or your abuse of medication, drugs or alcohol, or non-compliance with prescribed medical treatment
  • Mental or emotional stress, including anxiety and panic, unless it was severe enough to require medical attention
  • War or rebellion
  • Any treatment, surgery, investigation, palliative care or alternative therapy that was the purpose of your trip
  • Any medical condition for which treatment is expected
  • Symptoms in the 90 days before your trip that would cause a “prudent” person to seek medical attention
  • Treatment for any condition for which you have been advised by your physician not to travel
  • Any medical condition suffered or contracted or loss incurred in a country where there is an “avoid non-essential travel” or “avoid all travel” travel advisory in effect before you leave on your trip
  • Any medical condition if the insurer’s medical advisors recommend you return home and you choose not to return
  • Any radiation or radioactive contamination from any nuclear fuel or waste, or the radioactive, toxic, explosive or other dangerous properties of nuclear machinery

There are additional exclusions related to particular insurance coverages, so read your certificate of insurance carefully.

Travel assistance is available 24/7 and is provided by Global Excel Management Inc.

The following assistance services are available:

  • Direction to one or more recommended medical service providers near you
  • Confirmation of coverage
  • Direct payment of eligible medical expenses to your service provider
  • Consultation with your physician and monitoring of your care
  • Monitoring the appropriateness, necessity and reasonableness of that care to ensure your expenses will be covered by insurance
  • Conveying emergency messages to your immediate family, physician or business
  • Coordination to replace your prescription eyeglasses or medication if necessary (though the actual cost to replace these items is not covered)

In the event of a medical emergency you, or someone acting on your behalf, must call Global Excel before receiving any medical treatment or, if this is medically impossible, as soon as possible afterward. If you do not make contact before seeking medical treatment or if you receive care from a non-approved medical service provider, you will be responsible for 20% of your covered medical expenses to a maximum of $25,000.

Emergency medical coverage: This is provided by the Platinum Card® from American Express for the first 15 consecutive days of your trip, starting with the day you leave your home province or territory and ending the day you return home.

However, coverage is automatically extended beyond the 15-day limit by the following amounts due to these circumstances:

  • Up to five dates if you or your travelling companion are hospitalized due to a medical emergency on your scheduled return date
  • Up to five days if you must delay you or your travelling companion’s return date due to a medical emergency
  • Up to 72 hours if there’s a delay with your common carrier (plane, train, etc.) on your return date

Trip cancellation and trip interruption coverage: This begins on your effective date, or the date any portion of the trip costs are first charged to the card or paid by American Express Membership Rewards points. The coverage ends at midnight on your return date, though may be subject to extension due to the circumstances noted above.

Flight and baggage delay insurance: This coverage begins when your full fare is charged to your The Platinum Card® from American Express card. The hotel burglary insurance begins when your accommodations are reserved, booked and charged to your card. Coverage ends when you return home.

Lost and stolen baggage insurance: This starts when your baggage has been checked in and is in the care of an airline, or in the case of carry-on baggage, when you board the plane.

Travel accident insurance: This is in effect for the duration of the policy and will cover losses that happen within 100 days of the date of the accident that caused the injury.

Car rental theft and damage insurance: This valuable coverage is valid for a maximum of 48 consecutive days, starting the day you take control of the rental car. If you rent your vehicle for more than 48 days, there is no coverage provided, including for the first 48 days. You can not extend your insurance in any way. You can only qualify for the car rental theft and damage insurance coverage once in a calendar year.

In addition, coverage for all The Platinum Card® from American Express travel insurance ends when:

  • Your account is cancelled.
  • Your privileges are terminated.
  • Your account is no longer in good standing.

You can fill a claim by visiting the online claims portal at amex.rsagroup.ca. There you can start a claim and submit your required supporting documents. Once submitted, you can track the status of your claim through the portal.

You must file your claim(s) within a prescribed number of days, as follows:

Depending on your claim, you may need to submit supporting documentation with your completed claim and authorization form, including:

  • Proof of your departure and return dates
  • Originals of all bills, invoices and receipts
  • Proof of payment by your government health insurance plan and/or payment from any other insurer or benefit plan
  • Complete diagnosis from the physician and/or hospital that provided the treatment, including confirmation that the treatment was medically necessary
  • Proof of the accident for emergency dental treatment
  • Written evidence of the risk insured that was the cause of the cancellation, interruption or delay
  • Tour operator terms and conditions
  • Copies of Amex statements showing payment of your trip or redemption of points
  • Complete unused transportation tickets and vouchers
  • Receipts for prepaid land arrangements and/or subsistence expenses
  • Original passenger receipts for new tickets
  • Reports from the police or local authorities documenting the cause of the missed connection
  • Detailed invoices and/or receipts from service providers
  • A copy of the travel agent’s invoice or itinerary and account statement of the full fare expenses
  • Alternate boarding pass or flight delay report from the airline
  • Verification from the airline of the delay, including reason, duration of delay and any compensation received
  • Proof of delivery confirming date/time baggage was delivered
  • Invoice issued by your accommodations
  • Police report confirming forced entry and a burglary report from the accommodation
  • Receipts for repaired or replaced items
  • Lost or damaged baggage report
  • Proof of settlement from your personal insurance company and/or airline
  • Estimate of personal item or baggage repair(s)
  • Itemized original receipts for replacement items
  • Vehicle rental agreement
  • Accident or damage report

You may also need to undergo a medical examination by a physician (or physicians) selected by the insurer.

The travel insurance offered by The Platinum Card® from American Express card offers comprehensive coverage in case of a wide number of travel calamities. For a simple trip of less than 15 days, this card likely offers sufficient protection. But if you plan on travelling for longer, have some high-risk activities in mind or live with pre-existing health conditions, you may want to consider additional coverage.

Does The Platinum Card® from American Express travel insurance pay directly?

According to the certificate of insurance, “.. wherever possible, Global Excel will… pay your eligible medical expenses directly to the recommended medical service provider.” The insurer also notes, however, that “there are certain countries where, due to local conditions or travel reports from the Canadian government, assistance services are not available and you may be required to make a payment up front.” In this case, it’s crucial that you obtain detailed and itemized original receipts to later use for your claim.

Does The Platinum Card® from American Express travel insurance have any age restrictions?

You must be at least 15 days old and under age 65 to qualify for The Platinum Card® from American Express travel insurance.

Does The Platinum Card® from American Express travel insurance have any date restrictions?

The Platinum Card® from American Express travel insurance will only cover the first 15 days of travel. Beyond 15 days, you can request a top-up of coverage for an extra premium.

Does The Platinum Card® from American Express travel insurance cover COVID-19?

Emergency medical coverage is available for COVID-19-related emergencies, as long as there is no “avoid all non-essential travel” or “avoid all travel” travel advisory in effect for your destination. If an advisory is issued while you are on your trip, The Platinum Card® from American Express provides coverage for medical emergencies related to COVID-19 for up to 10 days. If you are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 before you leave on your trip, your insurance will likely not provide coverage as it is considered a pre-existing condition. According to the trip cancellation and trip interruption certificate of insurance (effective January 1, 2021), “A trip cancellation, trip interruption or trip delay, which is related, directly or indirectly, to Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)” is not covered. This means that expenses related to quarantine, refused boarding or refused entry are not covered.

What if my insurance benefits are insufficient?

The Platinum Card® from American Express travel insurance is considered excess insurance and last payor, meaning that all other sources of reimbursement, such as your provincial or territorial health plan and (if applicable) and any other insurance, such as that from a current or former employer, must be exhausted first. The Platinum Card® from American Express will pay the balance owing for eligible expenses. You are responsible for any deficit between the amount owing and the amount covered by insurance.

What if I’m travelling more than 15 days?

If you travel for more than 15 days, you can either request a top-up from The Platinum Card® from American Express and pay the extra premium or you can purchase a standalone policy.

Which is better: credit card or separate travel insurance ?

The choice between credit cards travel insurance or an individual, separate travel insurance plan is a personal one, based on your travel itinerary, health and insurance needs. Credit card travel insurance is a useful perk included in a card’s annual fee. There is no additional premium for insurance, unless you require coverage longer than the number of days under your policy, for example, 15 days with the The Platinum Card® from American Express card. You’ll need to purchase your non-refundable and non-transferable expenses, such as flights and hotels, with the card to get coverage. However, credit card travel insurance is limited compared to separate travel insurance policies that often have higher benefits, more comprehensive coverage and can include add-ons for high-risk activities or pre-existing conditions. If your credit card does not meet your needs, you can purchase a standalone policy as a top-up to your card’s coverage.

Can I pay for my trip with points and still get travel insurance coverage?

It depends. Trips will be covered if trip costs are paid for by redeeming Amex Membership Rewards Program points, but not if points are used from another reward program.

Purchases by both the Basic Card Member and any Additional Card Members on the Card Account are eligible for statement credits. However, the total amount of statement credits for eligible purchases will not exceed $200 per calendar year, per Card Account. Fine Hotels + Resorts ® program bookings may be made only by eligible U.S. Consumer Basic Platinum and Additional Platinum Card Members. The Hotel Collection bookings may be made by eligible U.S. Consumer Basic and Additional Platinum Card Members and Companion Platinum Card Members on the Platinum Card Account. Delta SkyMiles ® Platinum Card Members are not eligible for the benefit. To receive the statement credits, an eligible Card Member must make a new booking using their eligible Card through American Express Travel on or after July 1st, 2021, that is prepaid (referred to as "Pay Now" on amextravel.com and the Amex App), for a qualifying stay at an available, participating Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection property. Bookings of The Hotel Collection require a minimum stay of two consecutive nights. Eligible bookings must be processed before December 31st, 11:59PM Central Time, each calendar year to be eligible for statement credits within that year. Eligible bookings do not include interest charges, cancellation fees, property fees or other similar fees, or any charges by a property to you (whether for your booking, your stay or otherwise).

Statement credits are typically received within a few days, however it may take 90 days after an eligible prepaid hotel booking is charged to the Card Account. American Express relies on the merchant to process transactions within the same calendar year that you made the prepaid booking in order to apply the statement credit in the calendar year that it was intended. For example, if you make an eligible prepaid booking on the last day of the year, but the merchant doesn't process that transaction until the next day, then the statement credit available in the next calendar year will be applied to the Card Account, if the purchase is eligible. Statement credits may not be received or may be reversed if the booking is cancelled or modified. To be eligible for this benefit, your Card account must not be cancelled or past due at the time of statement credit fulfillment. If American Express does not receive information that identifies your transaction as eligible, you will not receive the statement credits. For example, your transaction will not be eligible if it is a booking: (i) made with a property not included in the Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection programs, (ii) not made through American Express Travel, or (iii) not made with an eligible Card. Participating properties and their availability are subject to change. If American Express, in its sole discretion, determines that you have engaged in or intend to engage in any manner of abuse, misuse, or gaming in connection with this benefit, American Express will not have an obligation to provide and may reverse any statement credits provided to you. Basic Card Members will get 1 Membership Rewards® point for each dollar charged for eligible purchases on their Platinum Card® or an Additional Card on their Account and 4 additional points (for a total of 5 points) for each dollar charged for eligible travel purchases on any Card on the Account (“Additional Points”), minus cancellations and credits. Eligible travel purchases are limited to: (i) purchases of air tickets on scheduled flights, of up to $500,000 in charges per calendar year, booked directly with passenger airlines or through American Express Travel (by calling 1-800-525-3355 or through AmexTravel.com); (ii) purchases of prepaid hotel reservations booked through American Express Travel; and (iii) purchases of prepaid flight+hotel packages booked through AmexTravel.com. Eligible travel purchases do not include: charter flights, private jet flights, flights that are part of tours, cruises, or travel packages (other than prepaid flight+hotel packages booked through AmexTravel.com), ticketing or similar service fees, ticket cancellation or change fees, property fees or similar fees, hotel group reservations or events, interest charges, or purchases of cash equivalents. Eligible prepaid hotel bookings or prepaid flight+hotel bookings that are modified directly with the hotel will not be eligible for Additional Points.

U.S. Platinum Card and U.S. Business Platinum Card Members may qualify for Complimentary Guest Access for up to two (2) guests per visit to locations of The Centurion Lounge in the U.S., Hong Kong International Airport and London Heathrow Airport (“Complimentary Guest Access”), after spending $75,000 or more on eligible purchases on the Platinum Account in a calendar year. Escape Lounges – The Centurion® Studio Partner This benefit is available to U.S. Platinum Card Members. Companion Platinum Cards on Consumer Platinum Accounts and Additional Gold and Additional Business Expense Cards on Business Platinum Accounts are not eligible for access to Escape Lounges – The Centurion® Studio Partner. Card Members receive complimentary access to all US locations of the Escape Lounges. Delta Sky Club

This benefit is available to U.S. Platinum Card Members and Additional Platinum Card Members on the Account (each, an “Eligible Platinum Card Member”). Companion Platinum Cards on Consumer Platinum Accounts and Additional Gold and Additional Business Expense Cards on Business Platinum Accounts are not eligible for the Delta Sky Club benefit. Platinum Card Members must present their valid American Express Card, government-issued I.D., and boarding pass to the Delta Sky Club ambassador. Boarding pass must show a reservation for a same-day Delta-operated flight (Delta or Delta connection) departing from or arriving at the airport in which the Delta Sky Club is located. Name on boarding pass must match name on the Card. Eligible Platinum Card Members on departing flights can only access the Delta Sky Club or the Delta Sky Club “Grab and Go” feature within 3 hours of their flight's scheduled departure time. Effective January 1, 2024:  Eligible Platinum Card Members traveling on a same-day Delta-operated flight with Basic Economy (E) fare tickets will not have access to the Delta Sky Club or to Grab and Go.  

Effective September 14, 2023 through January 31, 2025:  Eligible Platinum Card Members receive complimentary access to the Delta Sky Club or to Grab and Go when traveling on a same-day Delta-operated flight. Eligible Platinum Card Members may bring either up to two guests, or their immediate family (spouse/domestic partner and children under 21) to the Club at a per-visit rate of $50 per person, per location or to Grab and Go at a per-visit rate of $25 per person, per location. The Eligible Platinum Card must be used as the payment method to purchase guest access. Guests must also be flying on a same-day Delta-operated flight. Children under 2 years of age may accompany the Eligible Platinum Card Member for free.

Effective February 1, 2025:  Eligible Platinum Card Members will receive 10 Visits per Eligible Platinum Card per year to the Delta Sky Club or to Grab and Go when traveling on a same-day Delta-operated flight. Visits are non-transferable and may only be used by the Eligible Platinum Card Member. Visits issued from February 1, 2025 through January 31, 2026 will expire on January 31, 2026, and Visits issued in subsequent years will expire on January 31 of each calendar year thereafter. 

A “Visit” is an entry to one or more Delta Sky Clubs or usage of the Delta Sky Club “Grab and Go” feature, at one or more airports, for a period of up to 24 hours starting upon the first Delta Sky Club entry or Grab and Go usage, during an Eligible Platinum Card Member’s travel on a same-day Delta-operated flight. A single Visit permits usage of Delta Sky Club(s) in multiple airports during the 24-hour period. For example, if you visit a Delta Sky Club in different airports on a trip, entry into one or more of these Clubs will be considered part of the same Visit as long as these additional entries occur within 24 hours of the first Delta Sky Club entry. If travel exceeds 24 hours from the first Delta Sky Club, then a second Visit will be deducted if entering the Delta Sky Club or using Grab and Go more than 24 hours after the first entry. Eligible Platinum Card Members may not access the Club or a Grab and Go location in the three hours from the time of previous Grab and Go usage at the same airport. Once all 10 Visits have been used, Eligible Card Members may purchase additional Delta Sky Club Visits (including Grab and Go) at a per-Visit rate of $50 per person. Visits cannot be used for guest entry. During a Visit, Eligible Platinum Card Members may bring either up to two (2) guests, or their immediate family (spouse/domestic partner and children under 21) to the Club (including Grab and Go) at a per-Visit rate of $50 per person. The Eligible Platinum Card must be used as the payment method to purchase Card Member and guest access. Guests must also be flying on a same-day Delta-operated flight and be accompanied by the Eligible Platinum Card Member. Children under 2 years of age may accompany the Eligible Platinum Card Member for free.

To earn an unlimited number of Visits (“Unlimited Delta Sky Club Access”) starting on February 1, 2025, the total eligible purchases on the Eligible Platinum Card Account must equal or exceed $75,000 (the “Purchase Requirement”) between January 1, 2024 and December 31, 2024 and in each calendar year thereafter. Unlimited Delta Sky Club Access will be provided to all Eligible Platinum Card Members once the Account has reached the Purchase Requirement. Companion Platinum Cards on Consumer Platinum Accounts and Additional Gold and Additional Business Expense Cards on Business Platinum Accounts are not eligible for the Unlimited Delta Sky Club Access benefit. All entry requirements set forth above will continue to apply with respect to Unlimited Delta Sky Club Access.

Unlimited Delta Sky Club Access will be processed within a week of the Eligible Platinum Card Account’s satisfying the Purchase Requirement in most instances but may take up to 12 weeks to become effective. Once effective, Unlimited Delta Sky Club Access will be available for the remainder of the calendar year in which it became effective, the following calendar year and through January 31 of the next calendar year (for example, if Unlimited Delta Sky Club Access becomes effective on May 1, 2025, it will remain effective through January 31, 2027). Eligible purchases made by any Additional Card Members on the Eligible Platinum Card Account will contribute to the Purchase Requirement. Eligible purchases to meet the Purchase Requirement are for goods and services minus returns and other credits. Eligible purchases do NOT include fees, interest charges, cash advances, purchases of travelers’ checks, purchases or reloading of prepaid cards, purchases of gift cards, person-to-person payments, or other cash equivalents. If a Card Member upgrades or downgrades from a different American Express Card to an Eligible Platinum Card, eligible purchases made on the prior Card Account will count toward the Purchase Requirement. Delta reserves the right to revoke Unlimited Delta Sky Club Access if you return, reverse or charge back eligible purchases in a way that reduces your eligible spend below the Purchase Requirement for the calendar year. If Delta and/or American Express determine that you have engaged in abuse, misuse, or gaming in connection with this Delta Sky Club Access Benefit in any way or that you intend to do so, Visits may be deducted from your account and/or Unlimited Delta Sky Club Access revoked.

$200 Uber Cash Show Details Hide Details

Basic Card Members on a Consumer Platinum Card or Centurion account and Additional Centurion Card Members are eligible for Uber VIP and the monthly Amex Benefit (“Amex Benefit”). To receive this benefit, you must have downloaded the latest version of the Uber App and your eligible Platinum Card or Centurion Card must be a method of payment in your Uber account. The Amex Benefit may only be used in the United States.

To be eligible for the Amex Benefit, your Card Account must not be canceled or past due. American Express reserves the right to suspend your eligibility for the Amex Benefit if we suspect any violation or abuse. To continue to receive the Amex Benefit, the details for your eligible Card must be kept up to date in your Uber Account. Cards added to your Uber account through a third party such as Apple Pay or PayPal will not be eligible. An eligible Platinum Card or Centurion Card may receive the Amex Benefit on one Uber account. If the same Card is added to multiple Uber accounts, only the first Uber account to which the Card is added will receive the Amex Benefit. If your American Express Card details change, you will need to make required updates to your Card details in your Uber payment profile before the end of the current month to ensure you remain enrolled in the Amex Benefit. If you do not update your Card details prior to the first day of the following month, you may need to re-enroll to continue to receive your Amex benefit. It may take up to 48 hours for the Amex Benefit to become available in your Uber account after your eligible Card has been added to that account. Uber VIP is available in select cities and is governed by Uber’s terms and conditions.

The Amex Benefit is found within your Uber Cash balance. In order to use the Amex Benefit, Uber Cash must be turned on. If Uber Cash is turned on when you request a ride, Uber Cash will appear above the confirmation button. If Uber Cash does not appear above the confirmation button, tap on the current payment option and turn on Uber Cash. If you do not see the Amex Benefit in your Uber Cash balance within 48 hours from the time you enroll, call the number on the back of your Card for assistance.

The Amex Benefit may be applied to all vehicle types with Uber, orders on Uber Eats and to any other services to which Uber permits Uber Cash to be applied. If your Uber Cash balance does not satisfy the cost of your ride or order, the primary payment method on your Uber account will be charged for the difference.

The Amex Benefit will not apply to previous Uber transactions and cannot be used when paying with an UberFAMILY profile. New and existing Uber users are eligible. Uber will apply the Amex Benefit at the point of sale and it will be displayed on your emailed receipt. There is no limit to the number of transactions you may apply your Amex Benefit to each month, up to a total of $15 per month (up to a total of $35 in December).

Your monthly Amex Benefit expires at 11:59 PM Hawaii Standard Time on the last day of each calendar month. Unused balance in Uber Cash from your Amex Benefit will not carry over to the following month. Your Amex Benefit will be applied for the month in which the transaction is completed. If a transaction is eligible for another promotion that you have added to your Uber account, the promotion will be applied before your Amex Benefit. Certain other types of balances in Uber Cash may be applied to the cost of your ride or order prior to your Amex Benefit in Uber Cash. For purposes of fulfilling this benefit, American Express will share with Uber certain information about your Card, including the Card type, and updated Card information from time to time. If you do not wish to receive the Amex Benefit, please call the number on the back of your Card. If you do not see the Amex Benefit in your Uber Cash balance by 5:00 PM Hawaii Standard Time on the first day of each calendar month, call the number on the back of your Card for assistance.

$189 CLEAR Plus Credit Show Details Hide Details

Basic Card Members can earn up to $189 in statement credits per calendar year when the Platinum Card or Additional Cards on the Account are used to pay for an annual CLEAR Plus membership. Enrollment in CLEAR Plus is required and is subject to CLEAR’s terms and conditions. CLEAR Plus memberships automatically renew each year unless canceled and CLEAR will charge the applicable membership fee to the Card CLEAR has on file. American Express has no control over the application and/or approval process for CLEAR, and does not have access to any information provided to CLEAR by the Card Member or by CLEAR to the Card Member. American Express has no liability regarding the CLEAR program. If a Card Member's application is not approved by CLEAR, CLEAR will refund the charges. If the statement credit benefit has been applied before CLEAR refunds the charges, that statement credit will be reversed. Purchases by both the Basic Card Member and any Additional Card Members on the Card Account are eligible for statement credits. However, the total amount of statement credits for eligible purchases will not exceed $189 across all Cards on the Account per calendar year. $200 Airline Fee Credit Show Details Hide Details

Enrollment through American Express is required to receive the benefit. Basic Card Members on U.S. Consumer and Corporate Platinum Card Accounts can enroll in the benefit by making their airline selection in the Benefits section of their americanexpress.com online account or by calling us. Enrolled Basic Card Members on U.S. Consumer Platinum and U.S. Corporate Platinum Card Accounts are eligible to receive up to $200 in statement credits per calendar year for incidental airline fees charged by their one selected qualifying airline to the enrolled Card Account. Purchases by both the Basic Card Member and Additional Card Members on the enrolled Card Account are eligible for statement credits. However, the total amount of statement credits will not exceed $200 per calendar year, per Card Account. Amex rental car insurance: Get added protection for road trips and adventures

B esides generous rewards, the best credit cards offer several valuable perks to benefit cardholders. One of these perks is rental car insurance, which helps protect you when you use your credit card to rent a car. Several card issuers, including American Express, provide a rental car insurance benefit.

If you’re an Amex cardholder, here’s what to know about its rental car insurance, how it protects you, and how to file a claim.

What is the American Express rental car insurance policy?

American Express provides secondary rental car coverage as a complimentary benefit with many of its credit cards. This coverage serves as a backup to your primary insurance coverage when you use your card to rent a car and decline the rental car company’s collision damage waiver (CDW). 

“Generally, your personal auto insurance would need to be utilized first before submitting a claim with the insurance provided through your credit card,” says Kim Chambers, Product Manager, Credit Cards for Georgia's Own Credit Union . “The major benefit of secondary coverage is it often covers the deductible for your primary insurance.” 

Your credit card rental car insurance can also help cover the gap if another driver hits your rental car and the cost of the repairs exceeds your primary insurance policy’s limits. Certain premium Amex cards, like the The Platinum Card® from American Express, provide additional insurance coverage beyond coverage for damage or theft.

In addition to the secondary coverage benefit with many of its cards, Amex offers optional premium rental car coverage for a flat rate. This coverage also protects your rental if it's damaged or stolen, but it serves as primary instead of secondary coverage. This means you’d file a claim with Amex for damage or theft before contacting your personal insurance. While Amex’s premium coverage comes at a cost, you won’t pay a deductible before it kicks in. 

What is covered?

The complimentary coverage benefits you receive as an Amex cardholder will vary depending on your card. Most cards offer protection against theft or damage, though some may provide additional coverage, such as accidental injury or accidental death and dismemberment insurance.

Besides protecting your rental car if it’s damaged or stolen, premium rental car coverage from American Express provides these additional protections for drivers and passengers.

  • Secondary medical coverage
  • Secondary personal property coverage
  • Accidental death and dismemberment coverage

“There are limitations to be aware of with credit card rental car insurance,” warns Stuart Winchester, founder and CEO of digital insurance wallet Marble . “The amount of coverage may not be sufficient, and you might not be covered everywhere you travel. It’s important to read the fine print to understand potential exclusions.” 

Note that neither the standard rental car insurance nor the premium insurance provides liability coverage, which protects you if another driver or their passengers are injured or another vehicle is damaged due to an accident you cause.

Who does the policy cover?

Coverage varies slightly by card, but it applies to the following drivers in most cases. Certain cards, like the The Platinum Card® from American Express, also offer protections for passengers.

  • The cardholder’s spouse or partner
  • Authorized drivers on the rental contract

Amex rental car insurance pricing

As mentioned, American Express offers complimentary rental car insurance with many of its cards. You won’t pay anything out of pocket for this secondary coverage. But if you opt for its premium car rental coverage, you’ll pay a flat rate of $12.25 to $24.95 per rental period, depending on your coverage level. 

Amex rental car insurance coverage levels

  • Complimentary coverage: Up to $50,000 or $75,000 for theft or damage, depending on the card. Certain cards also provide additional accidental death and dismemberment, accidental injury, and car rental personal property coverage.
  • Premium coverage : Up to $100,000 for theft, damage, accidental death and dismemberment coverage; up to $15,000 for secondary medical expenses; and up to $5,000 in secondary personal property coverage.

Which Amex cards include car rental insurance? 

Over 60 American Express cards include car rental insurance, but coverage amounts vary by card. For example, the The Platinum Card® from American Express offers up to $75,000 in coverage for damage or theft of a rental car. By comparison, the American Express® Green Card has $50,000 worth of theft and damage coverage.

How do I file a claim?

Amex cards come with secondary rental car insurance, meaning you must first file a claim with your personal insurance company if your rental car is damaged or stolen. That said, primary coverage is available for an added cost with Amex premium rental car insurance. 

You can file a claim with American Express after a qualifying incident online or by calling 1-800-338-1670. Be prepared to provide copies of the following as part of the process:

  • Rental agreement
  • Police reports
  • Insurance coverage information
  • Relevant repair bills or receipts

Amex generally takes about 45 days to process claims, and you can check on your claim’s status anytime online or by calling (800) 338-1670. 

The takeaway 

Amex has two rental car insurance options for cardholders: secondary coverage, a free perk with many of its cards, and optional primary coverage available for a fee. The secondary coverage benefits will vary depending on your card, with premium cards like the Platinum Card® from American Express offering more comprehensive coverage. 

But both its secondary and primary rental car coverage provide valuable protection. The secondary coverage available to cardholders can reimburse you for the deductible on your primary insurance, as well as any costs exceeding your personal policy limits. If you opt for its primary coverage for a fee, you’ll get up to $100,000 in theft and damage insurance, plus other coverages for added protection.

Summer is just a few months away — and if you're planning a vacation this year, the last thing you want is an unexpected event to derail your plans (and cost you hundreds).

Flights get delayed or canceled constantly. Luggage disappears into the ether. Medical emergencies occur in remote destinations. Yet many jetsetters simply cross their fingers and hope for the best rather than prepare for the worst.

That's why, as a financial planner, I believe it's crucial to consider protecting your trips with the right insurance coverage. One option often overlooked, particularly by frequent travelers, is annual travel insurance .

Annual travel insurance covers all your trips within 365 days. Unlike stand-alone travel insurance, which only covers you for a specific trip, an annual policy covers any trips you take within the year.

That's why I tell clients who travel frequently that an annual policy is a good choice for their needs. By opting for an annual plan, you don't have to go through the hassle of booking multiple policies and potentially save money compared to purchasing individual trip coverage. Here's how it works.

What to look for in a policy

While specifics may vary depending on the insurer and plan tier, most include the following key benefits:

  • Trip cancellations or interruptions: You may be able to get reimbursed for expenses (even nonrefundable ones!) related to an illness, injury, or natural disaster that forced you to cancel or cut your trip short.
  • Emergency medical and dental care: If you fall ill or get injured while traveling, your insurance can help cover the cost of medical treatment.
  • Emergency evacuation: In a serious medical emergency or security situation, your policy will arrange and pay for transportation to a hospital or back to your home country.
  • Lost, delayed, or damaged baggage: If your luggage is lost, delayed, or damaged during your trip, you can get financial coverage for essential items while you wait for your stuff to be recovered or replaced.
  • Trip delays and missed connections: When your travel plans are disrupted due to issues like mechanical problems or severe weather, you may get reimbursement for additional expenses incurred, like meals, lodging, and transportation.

It's important to note that annual travel insurance plans have limitations. Certain high-risk activities, pre-existing medical conditions, and travel to specific regions may be restricted or require additional coverage.

Some travelers may assume that their credit card's built-in travel protections are enough. While many travel rewards credit cards offer perks like rental car insurance, trip cancellation, and baggage reimbursement, the coverage limits are often much lower than a dedicated annual travel insurance plan.

Credit card coverage for emergency medical care is also particularly limited — capped at a few thousand dollars — which may not be enough in the face of a major international medical emergency.

How much travel justifies an annual plan?

For the occasional traveler who takes one or two trips a year, single-trip policies will probably work for you. But if you fall into any of these buckets, you may want to consider an annual policy:

  • Regular international travelers (three or more trips abroad yearly)
  • Road warriors frequently away for work
  • Adventurers engaging in high-risk activities like heli-skiing, scuba diving, or mountain climbing
  • Cruisers and tour group travelers
  • Students or retirees taking extended trips throughout the year
  • Those visiting developing countries with limited medical care

AmEx Platinum cruise benefits

AmEx Platinum cruise benefits vary based on which cruise line you book and the details of your cruise. AmEx cardholders can book online or call AmEx Travel at 866-669-4423 to receive these exclusive benefits.

At the moment, American Express partners with 18 different cruise lines. Each cruise line offers different benefits across a variety of price points, travel dates and selected cabins.

Shipboard credit

As part of the American Express Cruise Privileges program, eligible cardholders receive $100 to $300 of onboard credits per stateroom. These credits are redeemable for dining, spa services and more. They cannot be used for casino charges, gratuities or similar expenses.

The shipboard credits are applied to your final bill at the end of your cruise.

They may be paid in local currency and are subject to foreign currency fluctuations. Any unused portion of your credits is nonrefundable, so travelers should use them fully.

Exclusive amenities that vary by cruise line

In addition to an onboard credit, reservations include exclusive amenities unique to each cruise line. Examples include premium wine, assorted canapés, spa vouchers and behind-the-scenes ship tours.

How to receive American Express cruise benefits

To receive your cruise benefits, follow these steps and ensure your reservation meets the requirements.

Call or book online with AmEx Travel

Your reservations must be booked through AmEx Travel online or over the phone. These benefits are unavailable if you book directly with the cruise line or through a third party, like a travel agent or online travel agency.

Cruise must be at least five days and have double-occupancy

The cruise must be at least five days long, and you must be traveling with at least double occupancy in your room.

Onboard credits and other amenities are available for up to three staterooms per eligible card member, per cruise. So, you can share benefits with fellow travelers if you book all of the staterooms together using your eligible credit card.

Cardholder must travel on the cruise

While you can book additional rooms for travel companions, the cardholder paying for the cruise must be on the trip. Otherwise, those on the cruise will not receive the benefits.

Book an eligible room type

Not all staterooms are eligible for Cruise Privileges program benefits. Requirements vary by cruise line, so double-check eligibility before booking your room to avoid disappointment during your trip.

Use an eligible card to pay

Amex Green Card — Travel Insurance Benefits

With the Amex Green card, you don’t get access to fancy Amex Centurion Lounges or perks like free breakfast and room upgrades when booking through Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts .

But you’ll still get a handful of useful travel protections and benefits that could save you thousands of dollars in the long run (though we hope you won’t ever have to use these benefits because that would mean an unfortunate incident has occurred).

If you tend to rent cars while traveling, you might be surprised to discover that many credit cards offer insurance for your rental car. In this case, the Amex Green card comes with secondary rental car coverage (not to be confused with primary rental car coverage).

Secondary rental car insurance requires you to file a claim with any other insurance policies you have (including the one you use for your main car at home) before any of its coverage can apply.

Also, this particular rental car coverage policy covers rentals of up to 30 consecutive days and insures up to $50,000 per rental.

Premium Protection

With the Amex Green card, you also have the ability to purchase primary rental car coverage through Premium Protection , which comes at a low, fixed price of between $12.25 and $24.95 for the entire rental duration (eligible rentals can be up to 42 total days in length).

There’s no deductible, and this is a per-rental rate, not a per-day rate, which translates to much greater savings over other primary car rental insurance policies. The policy includes accidental death/dismemberment coverage, rental car damage, theft, and loss of use coverage.

Keep in mind that neither of these policies offers liability coverage — so if you are deemed at fault for the incident, you’ll be solely responsible for any costs and damages incurred regardless of whether you purchase Premium Protection or stick with the standard secondary car rental insurance. There’s also no disability coverage or uninsured/under-insured motorist coverage with Premium Protection.

Also, there is no coverage available when renting motor vehicles in these countries:

  • New Zealand
  • Any other countries subject to comprehensive sanctions administered by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (e.g. Iran, Cuba, etc.)

Filing a Claim

You can file a claim for a covered incident by calling 800-338-1670 within 30 days of the loss or as soon as reasonably possible. You can also file a claim at the American Express Claims Center .

After opening a claim, you’ll be sent additional forms within 15 days of reporting the incident to complete. These claims must be submitted, alongside any required documentation within 60 days after the incident.

Any claims that are fully substantiated will be paid within 30 days after your claim is approved.

Another lovely benefit of the Amex Green card is trip delay insurance, which can cover you in the event that you’ve booked round-trip travel (which can consist of a combination of one-way tickets) entirely on your Amex Green card and there’s a covered delay of more than 12 hours. Coverage is also secondary to any primary coverage you may hold.

This insurance policy covers common carrier tickets, meaning any land, water, or air conveyance operating under a valid license for the transportation of passengers for hire and for which a ticket must be purchased prior to commencing travel.

Commercial airline tickets are eligible, as are high-speed train tickets and even cruises. However, some exclusions include taxis, limousine services, commuter rail or commuter bus lines, personal automobiles, or rental vehicles.

You, eligible family members, and traveling companions can get up to $300 in trip delay coverage towards the purchase of reasonably essential expenses like meals, lodging, toiletries, medication, and other personal use items if your trip is delayed more than 12 hours.

You can be approved for up to 2 trip delay claims every consecutive 12-month period.

Covered losses include:

  • A common carrier’s equipment failure
  • Inclement weather , which prevents a reasonable and prudent person from traveling or continuing (e.g. severe weather that delays the scheduled arrival or departure of a common carrier)
  • Lost or stolen passports or travel documents
  • Terrorist action or hijacking

Anything that falls outside of the categorization for covered losses is considered to be an exclusion for trip delay coverage.

For example, if the airline struggles to staff your aircraft with a crew, this would not be grounds for a covered trip delay because it doesn’t fall under the 4 bullet points above.

You can open a claim by calling your Benefits Administrator at 844-933-0648 within 60 days of the covered loss. The representative will provide instructions for submitting a completed claim and any required documentation which must be furnished within 180 days after the date of the covered loss.

Another great travel protection benefit of the Amex Green card is the baggage insurance plan. Simply pay for your common carrier ticket entirely using your Amex Green card (or using Membership Rewards points) to get baggage insurance coverage.

Coverage can apply to the cardmember, cardmember’s spouse or domestic partner, cardmember’s dependent children under 23 years of age, or dependent children because of a handicap condition that occurred before the attainment of the limited age of 23.

With the exception of war, acts of war, service in the armed forces or united auxiliary to it, acts of the customer or government authority, you can be eligible for the replacement cost of baggage and its contents subject to these coverage limits:

There’s also a sub-limit of $250 maximum per covered person per trip for all bags for high-risk items like jewelry, sporting equipment, photographic or electronic equipment, and more.

Lastly, for New York state cardmembers, there’s a maximum limit of $10,000 in aggregate per trip for all covered persons.

Here are the types of property that are excluded from coverage:

  • Cash or its equivalent, notes, accounts, bills, currency, deeds, evidence of debt or intangible property, rare stamps or coins
  • Credit cards and other travel documents including passports and visas
  • Documents and tickets of any kind
  • Eyeglasses, sunglasses, and contact lenses
  • Food, consumable, and perishable items
  • Hearing aids
  • Living plants and animals
  • Prescription or non-prescription drugs
  • Property shipping as freight or shipped prior to the departure date
  • Prosthetic devices
  • Traveler’s checks and other negotiable instruments including gift certificates, gift cards, gift checks, food stamps

You can file a claim by visiting the A merican Express Online Claim Center or by calling 800-228-6855. You’ll need to provide notice of a claim within 30 days of the loss or as soon as reasonably possible.

Complete the claim form and submit any required or supplemental documentation within 60 days. This includes a list of the items lost, receipts, and other reports.

Approved claims will be paid within 30 days after satisfactory proof of loss evidence has been received.

Travel Benefits

Outside of travel insurance and protection, there are still a number of ways the Amex Green card can help when you’re traveling.

There are several factors that determine the cost of travel insurance, including:

  • Age and number of travelers being insured.
  • Trip length.
  • Total trip cost.
  • The travel insurance plan you choose.
  • The travel insurance company.
  • Any add-ons, features or upgraded benefits you include in the travel insurance plan.

It also offers upgrades such additional medical coverage, “cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage and an adventure sports rider that may be a good fit for your trip.

Reasons to consider paying more for travel insurance 

Make sure you understand what you’re giving up if you buy the cheapest travel insurance. Here are a few reasons you may consider paying a little extra for better coverage. 

  • Emergency medical. The best travel medical insurance offers primary coverage for emergency medical benefits. Travel insurance with primary coverage can cost more than secondary coverage but will save you from having to file a claim with your health insurance company before filing a travel insurance claim.
  • Emergency evacuation. If you’re traveling to a remote location or planning a boat excursion on your trip, look at travel insurance with a high medical evacuation insurance limit. If you are injured while traveling, transportation to the nearest adequate medical facility could cost in the tens to hundreds of thousands. It may make sense to pay more for travel insurance with robust emergency evacuation coverage. 
  • Flexibility. To maximize your trip flexibility, you might consider upgrading your travel insurance to “ cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage . This will increase the cost of your travel insurance but allow you to cancel your trip for any reason — not just those listed in your policy. The catch is that you’ll need to cancel at least 48 hours before your trip and will only be reimbursed 50% or 75% of your trip expenses, depending on the plan. 
  • Upgrades. Many travel insurance plans have optional extras like car rental collision and adventure sports (which may otherwise be excluded from coverage). These will cost you extra but may give you the coverage you need.

The best way to find the cheapest travel insurance is to determine what you’re looking for in a travel insurance policy and compare plans that meet your needs.

 “Travel insurance isn’t one-size-fits-all. Every trip is different, and every traveler has different needs, wants and concerns. This is why comparison is key,” said Morrow.

Consider the following factors when comparing cheap travel insurance plans.

  • How often you’re traveling. A single-trip policy may be the most cost-effective if you’re only going on a single trip this year. But a multi-trip travel insurance plan may be cheaper if you’re going on multiple international trips throughout the year. Annual travel insurance policies cover you for a whole year as long as each trip doesn’t exceed a certain number of days, usually 30 to 90 days. 
  • Credit card has travel insurance benefits. The best credit cards offer perks and benefits, and many offer travel insurance-specific benefits. The coverage types and benefit limits can vary, and you must put the entire trip cost on the credit card to use the coverage. If your trip costs more than the coverage limit on your card, you can supplement the rest with a cheaper travel insurance plan.
  • The coverage you need. When looking for the best travel insurance option at the most affordable price, only buy extras and upgrades you really need. A basic plan may only provide up to $500 in baggage insurance, but if you only plan to take $300 worth of clothes and accessories, you don’t need to pay more for higher coverage limits.

Is cheap travel insurance worth it?

Cheap travel insurance can be worth it, as long as you understand the plan limitations and exclusions. Taking the time to read your policy, especially the fine print, well before your trip can ensure there won’t be any surprises about what’s covered once your journey begins.

“If a traveler is looking for coverage for travel delays, cancellations, interruptions, medical and baggage — a comprehensive travel insurance policy will provide the most bang for their buck,” said Morrow. But if you’re on a tight budget and are only worried about emergency medical care and evacuation coverage while traveling abroad, stand-alone options are cheaper.

Before buying travel insurance, you should also consider what your health insurance will cover. 

“Most domestic health insurance plans, including Medicare, will not cover medical bills abroad,” said Morrow. Even if you’re staying stateside, you may find value in an affordable travel insurance plan with medical coverage if you have a high-deductible health plan (HDHP). 

A cheap travel insurance plan is better than none at all if you end up in a situation that would have covered some or all of your prepaid, nonrefundable trip expenses.

Methodology

Our insurance experts reviewed 1,855 coverage details and 567 rates to determine the best travel insurance . From those top-scoring travel insurance plans, we chose the most affordable for our rating of the cheapest travel insurance.

Insurers could score up to 100 points based on the following factors:

  • Cost: 40 points. We scored the average cost of each travel insurance policy for a variety of trips and traveler profiles.
  • Medical expenses: 10 points. We scored travel medical insurance by the coverage amount available. Travel insurance policies with emergency medical expense benefits of $250,000 or more per person were given the highest score of 10 points.
  • Medical evacuation: 10 points. We scored each plan’s emergency medical evacuation coverage by coverage amount. Travel insurance policies with medical evacuation expense benefits of $500,000 or more per person were given the highest score of 10 points.
  • Pre-existing medical condition exclusion waiver: 10 points. We gave full points to travel insurance policies that cover pre-existing medical conditions if certain conditions are met.
  • Missed connection: 10 points. Travel insurance plans with missed connection benefits of $1,000 per person or more received full points.
  • “Cancel for any reason” upgrade: 5 points. We gave points to travel insurance plans with optional “cancel for any reason” coverage that reimburses up to 75%.
  • Travel delay required waiting time: 5 points. We gave 5 points to travel insurance policies with travel delay benefits that kick in after a delay of 6 hours or less.
  • Cancel for work reasons: 5 points. If a travel insurance plan allows you to cancel your trip for work reasons, such as your boss requiring you to stay and work, we gave it 5 points.
  • Hurricane and severe weather: 5 points. Travel insurance plans that have a required waiting period for hurricane and weather coverage of 12 hours or less received 5 points.
