Sariska Tiger Reserve: A safari guide’s tips on the best time to visit, permits, hotels

By Kriti Saraswat-Satpathy

Sariska Tiger Reserve

At the crack of dawn, we wake up to the chirping of birds at our accommodation Utsav Camp, located close to the Tehla Gate of Sariska Tiger Reserve. The adventure begins even before we enter the park as we spot a golden jackal, a mongoose, and several peacocks on our way. Once inside, the chase for the striped beauty begins with many other jeeps lining up for the thrill. After following a few alarm calls and driving around, we head on a different path, and there we spot her, sunbathing in all her glory, a tigress named ST 30. She walks towards us before retreating into the thick of the forest and reappears just when we think we lost sight of her. The rush of excitement at the sudden sighting, the fear as she inches closer and the childlike wonderment that lingers on, Sariska gave us all this and more.

Sariska Tiger Reserve A safari guides tips on the best time to visit permits hotels

Planning a successful safari trip to Sariska requires a whole lot of research. To make things easier, Anil Roderges, the head naturalist at Utsav Camp Sariska, answers some common queries for a seamless safari experience.

What makes Sariska Tiger Reserve special?

A former hunting ground for the royal family of Alwar , Sarika has seen abundance as well as ample loss in its wildlife population. In 2004-2005, all its tigers were wiped off, which impacted the entire flora and fauna of the forest. But in 2008, the government and Wildlife Institute of India revived its tiger population by successfully relocating two tigers from Ranthambore National Park to Sariska Tiger Reserve. In the following years, a few more were relocated, and according to current records, it has a population of 31 tigers in its area of 881 square kilometres. Despite not being the most popular park in India, the dry deciduous forest boasts ample sightings that are only getting more prominent, a healthy bird life and places of historical and mythological importance, some of which are inside the reserve. It can be accessed from two gates, one more touristy than the other, giving travellers a choice to go with a popular or lesser explored zone. As you drive down from Jaipur , city buildings give way to boulders that line both sides of the road, tiny village settlements can be spotted and peacocks make an appearance every few metres. The blend of wildlife and manmade structures in one place makes Sariska Tiger Reserve special.

What to spot at Sariska Tiger Reserve?

“Sariska is a dense forest belt and a good habitat for terrestrial birds, but also has some water bodies where you can find residential and migratory birds,” says Roderges. When here, go birdwatching with a trained guide who can help you spot terrestrial birds like painted spurfowl, dusky eagle owls, brown fish owl, Indian peafowl, black francolin, painted francolin, spotted owlet and crested serpent eagle.

During monsoons, you can spot all types of cuckoos, shrikes, doves and aquatic birds like northern shoveler, northern pintail, gadwall, Eurasian wigeon, whistling teals, white-eyed pochards, ducks, moorhen and coots. Sariska is also home to seven species of vultures. Being a tiger reserve, the star attraction remains spotting the striped beast, but Sariska is also home to leopards that are at times spotted on the boulders surrounding the park. “Inside, you can find hyena, sambar deer, spotted deer, four-horned antelope, nilgai, wild boar, caracal, Asiatic wildcat, rusty spotted cat, porcupine and pangolin,” he says.

When is the best time to visit Mexico?

What’s the best time to go to Sariska Tiger Reserve?

“The charm of each safari is different, whether it is in the winter or summer. For me, Sariska is an all-year-round destination, except for the months it is shut, making it difficult to pick a specific season. While sightings are usually higher in summers due to watering holes drying up in the forest, the winter months offer a more pleasant experience with the lush greenery adding more charm. Sariska is also a haven for birdwatchers in these months. Sightings at Baghani and Kali Ghati are likely as there is a new tigress, ST 30, which has a small territory. Meanwhile, ST 23, a male tiger also resides here, ” says Roderges.

How many safaris should you do during a 3-night stay?

The naturalist recommends at least two safaris on your visit. Alternating between a morning and an evening slot is a great way to explore the reserve at different times of the day. You can also split your trip into two parts to be able to see the reserve from different gates.

What are the safari slots at Sariska Tiger Reserve?

Sariska Tiger Reserve has two safaris during the day, and the timings vary according to the season. Usually, from April to June, the safari is from 6 am to 9.30 am, and from 3 pm to 6.30 pm. In October as well as February and March, it opens from 6.30 am to 10 am, and 2.30 pm to 6 pm. From November to January, it changes to 7 am to 10.30 am and 2 pm to 5.30 pm. The reserve stays shut from July to September every year.

How to book a safari permit at Sariska Tiger Reserve and how much does it cost?

Most accommodations around the tiger reserve offer safari booking services, while some even have an in-house naturalist to accompany guests on the safari at an additional cost. Alternatively, you can book a safari to any of the gates on the government portal and plan your visit as per the availability. While 75% of safari booking slots are reserved for advance bookings that can be made up to 365 days prior, you can also make a current or ‘tatkal’ booking as per the slots available about 30 minutes before each safari. “I recommend letting an agent or your hotel make a safari booking as they already have an SSO ID which is required for online bookings,” says Roderges.

The official portal lists the fee starting from Rs776 for Indians and Rs1,516 for foreigners. Every safari also has additional costs including the driver and guide fee. “A government safari usually costs around Rs8,000 for a gypsy with a maximum of six passengers. The cost includes all taxes, driver and guide fees and the vehicle cost. If you book through a hotel such as Utsav Camp then our fee is also added taking it up to Rs13,000 where we provide pick-up and drop services and an in-house naturalist provided there are only five passengers in a gypsy,” explains the naturalist.

How to book a jeep and guide at Sariska Tiger Reserve?

The online process lets you book a jeep (a gypsy or a canter) and driver, or some hotels also provide a vehicle along with a driver and naturalist.

Which zones are the best at Sariska Tiger Reserve?

There are two gates at this reserve which are about 80 km apart. The more popular one, known as Sariska Gate has access to zones 1 and 2, but the other one, Tehla Gate, has access to zone 3 and even though it is smaller, often leads to sightings. “Plan your safari according to your stay. If you are staying in Alwar near the first gate then book a safari from there but if you are closer to Tehla, take one from there where you will find a comparatively lesser number of tourists,” suggests Roderges.

What are the best hotels in Sariska Tiger Reserve?

Utsav Camp Sariska (doubles from Rs 9,700; website ) founded by Luv Shekhawat, is one of the first forest lodges in southern Sariska and is 7km away from the Tehla Gate of the tiger reserve. It offers beautiful forest bungalows, stone cabins and Swiss tents with all creature comforts and is a pet-friendly property. Besides jeep drives, what else can you do in Sariska Tiger Reserve?

Sariska is surrounded by the Aravalli mountain range that turns lush green in the monsoon . “Besides natural wonders, Sariska is gifted with some man-made marvels like the Neelkanth Mahadev Temple, the Kankwari Fort and the Bhangarh Fort, all a short car ride away,” says Shekhawat. The Neelkanth Mahadev Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is maintained by the ASI, and you can spot intricate carvings on its facade with restoration work in progress. In the surrounding area, a short walk away, find a stepwell (baori), as well as ancient ruins with a large sculpture of a Jain Tīrthaṅkara. The fascinating drive to the abandoned Kankwari Fort takes you through the forest, leading to animal sightings including a big cat if it is your lucky day. “We first enter the fort and check for leopards before letting guests in as they often come to this spot,” reveals Roderges. Once there, soak in a bird’s eye view of Sariska including the reserve and villages. If you fancy an experience laced with eeriness, drive down to Bhangarh Fort which is considered one of the most haunted spots in India with entry restrictions post-sunset. All these are easily accessible from the Tehla side. If you are on the other end, you can pay a visit to the Pandupol Hanuman Temple.

About Sariska National Park

Sariska overview:.

Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary or Tiger Reserve, is situated between 27°42’33.31” N /76°28’35.92” E and 27°3’44.89” N 76°16’27.75” E in the Alwar district of Rajasthan state in India. The tiger reserve is spread over an area of 1203.33 sq. km (881.11 sq. km core/  322.22 sq. km buffer) of Aravalli hills.

The first reference to Alwar goes back to the story of Prahlad-Hiranyakashap, next in Mahabharat, where the Pandavas spent one year in hidden exile (Virat Nagar). The area gained prominence under the rule of the Bargujar Kings and was a part of the vast northern Indian empire as Gujara Pratihara.

Sariska was the hunting reserve for the royal family of Alwar. After Independence, when the control of the forest was vested with the government, the Sariska area was first notified as a Wildlife Reserve in 1955, then a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1958; it came under Project Tiger as Sariska Tiger Reserve in 1979.

The Tiger Reserve remains dry most of the year. However, it changes dramatically during the monsoon with thick undergrowth. During the summer months, the temperature soars up to 45°C, and the entire Jungle turns ash brown, except for the valleys.

Quick Facts About Sariska :

1955 – Sariska area was first notified as a Wildlife Reserve

1958 – Identified as Wildlife Sanctuary and became Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary.

1979 – Sariska became India’s 11th tiger reserve

2004 – All the Tigers got extinct from Sariska.

2008 – Tigers were reintroduced to Sariska from Ranthambore (Worlds First Tiger Relocation)

2012 – World first Tiger Relocation got successful after a tigress from Sariska (ST2) gave birth to 2 cubs.

2013 – Sariska forest was extended to Siliserh lake and Balaquila forest as the buffer zone of Sariska.

History of Sariska:

Set against the backdrop of the majestic Aravallis, Sariska is regarded as the place in the Mahabharata where the Pandavas found sanctuary during their last year of banishment. According to legend, it was here that the strongest Pandava brother, Bhima, was defeated by Hanuman. A shrine dedicated to Hanuman at Pandupol, which means “gateway of the Pandavas” in Sanskrit, is thronged by thousands of pilgrims on certain auspicious days.

Historically, the beauty of the forests here has caught the eye of royalty too. The Kankwari Fort, located within the core of the reserve, was built by the Rajput Maharaja Jai Singh II in the 17th century and was recently reopened to visitors. It had gained notoriety when Mughal emperor Aurangzeb imprisoned his elder brother Dara Shikoh here.

Despite the intrigue surrounding Kankwari, Bhangarh, another fort located on the southern border of the reserve, is more well-known. Bhangarh Fort is older, constructed by Maharaja Man Singh I, one of Akbar’s foremost military commanders and navratnas. It is famous for being one of the most haunted places in India.

Tiger Relocation in Sariska – The Glory is Back :

The Sariska Tiger Reserve is a remarkable success as the Tiger has been reintroduced here and they are breeding after 2005 when all Tigers were found having disappeared here. The reintroduced plan was devised in 2006- 2007 with a core group constitution by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) and the Department of Forest, Rajasthan.

It was during 2008 to 2011, eight Tigers were reintroduced here and each was given a number. In 2012, ST 2 gave a little (2 female cubs), In 2014, ST2 gave another litter of (2 cubs) and ST10 also gave its first litter (2cubs) in the same year.

The radio-collared Tigers are monitored round the clock through ground tracking (VHF) using homing in and triangulation technique. Seventeen dedicated teams have been deployed each has one forest guard and one research assistant with the vehicle. Wireless, GPS, and datasheet are provided to each party.

The Reserve has a beautiful blending of tropical dry deciduous and tropical thorn forest and is dotted with numerous narrow valleys. Dhok (Anogessus pendula) is the dominant tree species covering over 90% area of the forest. Boswellia Serrata and Lannea coromandelcia grow in rocky patches. Kathaa (Acacia catechu) and Bamboo are common in the Valleys. Some valleys support Palas (Butea monosperma) and Ber (Ziziphus species). Besides these, some noteworthy tree species are Arjun (Terminalia arjuna), Gugal (Commiphora wightii), Kadaya (Sterculia urens), Amla (Emblica Officinalis), Bahera (Terminalia bellerica).

In fact, during summer when most of the grasses are dry and are nonpalatable, the highly nutritious dry Dhok leaves fall on the forest floor and provide fodder for Sambar, Chital, and other herbivores.

The avian world is also well represented with a rich and varied Birdlife. These include Peafowl, (the largest population density in India) Grey partridge, Painted spurfowl, Bush Quail, Sand Grouse, Rufous Treepie, Golden-backed Woodpecker, Crested Serpent Eagle, White-eyed Buzzard, Oriental honey buzzard, Shikra, Short Toed snake eagle-owl, Disky eagle owl, Brown fish owl, and Paradise flycatcher. Golden oriole, Indian pitta migrate in large numbers in summers.

Sariska host more than 200 species of birds. For aquatic species, it is an ideal habitat as water is retained around the year, Resident species breed here while migratory ones stay during winter.

Sariska, a tiger reserve with extremely rich biodiversity is not only home to many mammals and birds but also inhabits various reptile species as well. While Cobras and Kraits are the common venomous snake species that can be seen in the fields and grasslands, the rocky terrain provides an ideal habitat for Vipers like the Saw Scaled and Russel’s. Other non-venomous species like the trinket, wolf snake, Royal snake, common kukri, Checkered keelback, etc can be easily seen including the Rock Python and Boa.

Bengal Monitor is fairly common around the whole Sariska while Spiny Tailed Lizard is visible at the desert patches around it. Our guide took a few pictures of us told us a little about the history then rushed us around from place to place. The objective became clear when he then took us to some of the expensive tourist shops inside the fort. As soon as we indicated we did not want to buy anything the tour abruptly ended. We bought the trip via the TripAdvisor app turns out we could have bought on the day for 1/4 of the price at the fort itself and hired a guide locally. The ticket included “fast track” entry and whilst the fort was “ overrun” with visitors there was NO queue. Feel very badly let down by TripAdvisor on this one. Will not use for booking tours again. How to Book Safari in Sariska? – Timings, fees & other details

' src=

Sariska tiger reserve is one of the most popular tiger reserves in India. It is located in the Alwar district of Rajasthan. This is approx. 110 km from Jaipur and 200 km from Delhi which makes it a great getaway from these 2 cities. Sariska is an ideal place for wildlife lovers as well as people who want to escape the city chaos and spend some time in a less-crowded close to nature kind of a place.

If you follow me on my social media or read this blog regularly, you must have read about trip to Sariska Tiger Reserve. I am linking all the articles at the end of this post for your reference. In this post, I am sharing everything on how to book safari in Sariska tiger reserve.

How to book safari in Sariska tiger reserve

How to Book Safari in Sariska? - Timings, fees & other details

There are 2 ways to book safari in Sariska – online and offline.

Offline safari booking means you go to the Sariska gate 1 or 2, goto the counter and buy your ticket. Although, I feel it is less convenient considering the fact that there are long queues at the ticket counter and you might not secure the desired number of seats in a single jeep if your group is big.

I booked my Sariska tiger reserve safari from Sariska Wild Ventures . They are the oldest wildlife tour organisers in Sariska. I am thanking them for hosting us and providing a memorable experience.

The process to book online safari for Sariska is very easy, especially with Sariska Wild Ventures. You can fill the form on their website or simply hit the whatsapp button and chat with the organiser to proceed with the bookings.

You can check with them for see which Sariska gate is nearest to your resort or hotel as there are 2 gates of Sariska Tiger Reserve – Gate 1 (i.e. Sariska Gate) and Gate 2 (i.e. Tehla Gate).

The details are as follows:

Jeep Safari Booking

  • Price (Indian) INR. 1500 per passenger / 8000 Full Gypsy
  • Price (Foreigner) INR. 2500 per passenger / 14000 Full Gypsy

P.S: Maximum 6 people are allowed in one Jeep

Canter Safari Booking

  • Price (Indian) INR. 1100 per passenger
  • Price (Foreigner) INR. 2000 per passenger

P.S: Maximum 20 people are allowed in one Canter

Safari Timings

  • Timings Morning 06:30 AM – 10:00 AM
  • Evening 02:30 PM – 06:00 PM

P.S: Safari timing varies as season changes, you may confirm the timings with the tour operator

Once you confirm the details with operator and make the payment, you will have to provide the aadhar card photo (on phone itself) of all the passengers for the ticket generation.

And done, you will get your confirmation receipt along with tour operator’s numbers.

Read at least 15 minutes prior to your safari timings in order to avoid the chaos.

Apart from Sariska tiger safari, you can also go for Bala Quila buffer zone safari and Bara Liwari buffer zone safari as well, which is also organised by Sariska Wild Ventures.

Not just this, but if you are planning to stay for 2 nights, then you can also go for Alwar sight-seeing and Bhangarh fort visit as well. All the options are available with Sariska Wild Ventures and this is the reason why I am happy with them and suggesting you to check them out.

So, my suggestion would be to book your sariska safari online from Sariska wild ventures or any other tour operator of your choice. Online booking is way more convenient that going there and booking in-person.

How many days are enough for Sariska tiger reserve? If you are going from Delhi or any other place then 2 nights, if you are going from Jaipur then 1 night is enough.

ATTILA THE PUN: A Magic Moscow Story

by Daniel Pinkwater ‧ RELEASE DATE: Oct. 5, 1981

This companion to last year's Magic Moscow is one of Pinkwater's trifles, not as far-out funny as its predecessor and thinner altogether, but a little better than its title and still containing enough throwaway laugh lines to uphold the joke-butt status of Hoboken, New Jersey--where a real comic-book collector named Steve actually does run a soft-ice-cream parlor called the Magic something-or-other and dispenses health-junk combinations almost as bizarre as the Nuclear Meltdown featured here. It's one of the regular Meltdown buyers, a fake ""mystic seer"" named Lamont Penumbra, who sets the action (such as it is) in motion in his loft above Hoboken's Parthenon Puerto Rican Restaurant. Armed with some old magic books acquired by Steve, and using Steve's kid helper Norman Bleistift (the narrator) as a go-between, Lamont sets out to summon ""a famous person from the past"" and gets Attila the Hun's less famous brother Attila the Pun. The problem then is what to do with this stomping, singing, sword-whacking, never-sleeping, and endlessly pun-cracking ghost--and the solution, dreamed up by Norman and following close on the heels of the problem's formulation, is to make him night watchman and Friday night comic at the Magic Moscow. ""It turns out that fifth-century Hun humor really goes over well in Hoboken,"" and Attila's act becomes the biggest show in town. Readers are treated to a sampling, and no doubt kids will take more enthusiastically than reviewers to Attila's puns.

Jeep's Easter Safari Builds Go All Retro For 2024

It's hard not to look back with over eight decades of off-roading history on the books.

Wrangler low down concept.

Jeep has built more than 100 of these custom 4x4s since 2008, but only a select few have managed to stick in the minds of the Jeep faithful. The new Rubicon 392 -based Wrangler Low Down concept pays homage to one of the most famous Easter Jeep Safari builds, the Lower 40 concept from 2009. That early build featured a V-8 engine swap under the hood, and made use of gigantic 40-inch rubber despite a stock ride height. The new truck is a bit more extreme, trading that old-school 5.7-liter V-8 for the potent 6.4-liter engine provided by the Rubicon 392. The new build also retains the stock suspension package from the Rubicon 392 model, but swaps out the stock Dana 44 axle for more robust Dana 60s with 5.38 gears. Those beefier axles help support the truck’s massive 42-inch BFGoodrich Krawler mud-terrain tires, which come installed on a set of 20-inch beadlock wheels. The stock fenders have been replaced with a set of flared carbon units, which help give the truck a purposeful stance. A Poison Apple Red paint job and a red-tinted bikini top are a nice nod to the original concept as well.

2024 jeep willys dispatcher concept

Wrangler 4xe Willys Dispatcher Concept

The second Wrangler build looks even further back in brand history, paying respects to the early civilian model Jeep from the post-war era . Based on the 4xe hybrid model, this Willys Dispatcher Concept gets some old-school appearance tweaks, including custom steel bumpers at both ends. The hood also features stamped “Willys” branding, which it shares with the original seven-barred product. Upgraded Dana 50 axles with 4.70 gears help increase capability, as do the Super Traxion 36-inch tires. That rubber comes wrapped around retro-style steel wheels, which are finished in a cream hue. The SUV itself is finished in a bespoke shade of Element 115 Green paint, which is accented nicely by the blacked out windshield banner. The best looking part of this custom SUV is the interior, complete with distressed saddle leather and houndstooth inserts throughout. The headrests have been pulled from the seats to improve that retro appearance. It’s the sort of thing we’d love to see make its way to the production models, however unlikely. The throwback style Warn Winch is another nice touch and helps to round out the package.

Gladiator High Top Concept

The Gladiator High Top Concept is a bit less of an involved build, borrowing mostly from the Jeep Performance Parts catalog. Upgrades include items like an AccuAir air suspension system, which work with Dana 60 axles at both ends to support 4x4 endeavors. The suspension system is put to the ground via a gigantic set of 40-inch BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO3s, which come wrapped around a set of 18-inch KMC Grenade Crawl beadlock wheels. A set of flat fender flares and AEV bumpers ensure that the large rubber is covered and ready for road-use, while giving the pickup some additional flair. Out back you’ll find a truck bed storage system by Decked, which brings a bit of overlanding capability to the build. A Warn Winch and some rock slider steps have also been added should any off-roading adventures take a turn for the worse.

2024 jeep vacationeer concept

Vacationeer Concept

Rounding out the 2024 Easter Jeep Safari lineup is the Grand Wagoneer-based Vacationeer Concept. The design is a clear nod to the original Wagoneer models, complete with the oh-so lovely wood grain graphics missing from the current production model. The woody look pairs very nicely with the Spearmint paint, which has slightly more white in the mix than the aforementioned Element 115 color. The wheel openings have also been massaged to make room for the larger 35-inch tires, which come wrapped around 18-inch Method Race wheels. A 1.5-inch suspension lift adds a bit of aggression to the stance, while bringing a bit more off-road capability to the table. The rear rows of seats have been removed in favor of a carbon-fiber RedTail Overland Skyloft, which serves as a passthrough rooftop tent for ideal camping conditions. Under the hood sits a high output variant of the Hurricane inline-six engine, which provides 510 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque. That said, the real highlight of this build is found on the interior, where Jeep enlisted the assistance of fashion designer Kiel James Patrick. The custom flannel seats feature famous Jeep models from years gone by, and fit with the theme perfectly. This is exactly how the Grand Wagoneer should have looked in production form, but we’ll settle for a concept like this one.

The Easter Jeep Safari runs through March 31st, 2024 in Moab, Utah. If you’re a diehard Jeeper, it might be worth the trek to lay eyes on these unique concept vehicles.
