There is no denying that visiting Phoenix in winter is one of the best times to head to the Arizona capital. When many other cities in the USA are shut in and tucked under a frozen blanket, winter is when Phoenix tends to experience some of the most pleasant temperatures and it is actually bearable to be outside.
Known for its abundant sunshine, great restaurants and fantastic outdoor activities, spending the winter in Phoenix is the perfect way to beat the frosty temperatures of elsewhere. So why not experience the high season in the Valley of the Sun while skipping out on the low season everywhere else? You certainly won’t be sorry.
If you’re planning a winter trip to Phoenix and want to know what to expect, then look no further. I was born and raised in the city and know exactly what it’s like and what there is to do.
Table of Contents
Winter Weather in Phoenix
The main thing most people want to know before planning a trip to Phoenix in the winter months is exactly what kind of weather to expect while you’re visiting. Does it get cold? Will it be blisteringly hot? What kind of clothes should you pack?
One thing to know is that Phoenix experiences quite extreme temperature variations throughout the day. Due to its desert climate, the nights and mornings can have a far lower temperature than at the peak of the afternoon. So if you’re judging the temperature based solely on the predicted highs, that’s not really the way to go about it.
In the months of December through February in Phoenix (generally considered to be the winter months here), the average low temperature ranges from 45-48°F (7-9°C) and the average high temperature ranges from 68-72°F (20-22°C).
The coolest month is often January and that also happens to be the rainiest month. Keep in mind, however, that there are still only an average of 3 days of rain during the month of January so you are still most likely to experience a lot of sunshine on your trip unless you get unlucky.
Nights and mornings can get pretty chilly so having a warm jacket is necessary for these times, but you can probably leave the scarves, hats and gloves at home unless you plan to visit parts of Northern Arizona, too. Phoenix can experience freezing temperatures at night, but it does tend to warm up by about 10AM so you likely won’t be too cold for too long.
It is worth noting, however, that the winter temperatures in Phoenix aren’t necessarily indicative of the entire state of Arizona in winter.
Which Month to Visit Phoenix in Winter?
If you want to plan a winter getaway to Phoenix, then which month should you visit in? As discussed above, the temperature doesn’t really vary too much during the months of December through to February, however, February does tend to be the warmest of the three.
If you’re thinking of visiting Phoenix in December, there are a lot of holiday light exhibitions on in the city. For instance, the Phoenix Zoo and Desert Botanical Garden all have seasonal light displays that generally are on from after Thanksgiving in November through to the first or second week of January. There are also lots of decorations that are put up in different areas lending to a great “festive” feel if that’s what you’re after.
If you’re planning on visiting Phoenix in January, there are a few events on that can make it worthwhile. For example, this is when the Barrett-Jackson Car Auction takes place which is a great event for those who want to view some really cool classic vehicles.
Phoenix in February is arguably one of the best months to head to the city. It’s where you can get some of the warmest temperatures and there are a few cultural and sporting events on that can be worthwhile, too. For instance, the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show is on from the middle of the month. If you’re a baseball fan, Cactus League Spring Training usually starts up at the end of February, as well.
Safety Tips for Visiting Phoenix in Winter
So are there any safety tips you need to keep in mind when visiting Phoenix in winter? Considering that the winters are incredibly mild and the excessive heat in the Valley does not usually begin until April or May, you don’t need to be as aware of any heat-related safety tips as if you were travelling in the summer months.
While your chances of getting heatstroke are drastically diminished during winter, you do still need to be aware of the strong sunshine that can be persistent even in the months of December, January and February. Especially if you’re planning on spending a lot of time outdoors or hiking (of course you are!), make sure to keep very hydrated, apply copious amounts of sunscreen and wear a sun hat.
If you’re out and about in the early morning or late at night, it’s worth noting that there can be frosts and things have the potential for getting icy, however, anything will tend to melt as soon as the sun goes up.
There is not generally a need to adjust any kind of driving style, for instance, when visiting Phoenix in winter and there aren’t any accelerated risks on winter roads vs any other time of year. If you need to rent a car for your trip to Phoenix during the winter months, browse Rentalcars.com which aggregates deals across many car hire companies.
Hiking in Phoenix in Winter
One of the most popular things to do in Phoenix any time of year is to go hiking on one or two of the many different trails that are present in the metropolitan area. Winter is arguably the best time of year to go for a hike as the temperatures are far more pleasant throughout the day, whereas in the summer you would need to hit the trail as early as possible to avoid the extreme heat and the risks involved with that.
When hiking, it’s important to be mindful of the wildlife you may encounter on the trail — particularly rattlesnakes. While winter is technically “hibernation” time and you are less likely to encounter snakes out and about, they do tend to congregate in dens in sunny areas so do be careful on the trail and don’t put your hands or feet into any crevices without checking who may or may not be inside first.
Rattlesnakes will not generally attack unless provoked so if you do encounter one when hiking in Phoenix in winter, make sure to give it a wide birth and simply walk around it.
Of course, lower temperatures don’t mean that there also isn’t a risk of dehydration or sunburn so make sure to drink plenty of water and wear lots of sun protection – sunscreen and a hat are necessary all year round!
One more thing to be mindful of is that the most popular hiking trails — particularly at Camelback Mountain, but elsewhere as well — can get extremely busy and parking can be an absolute nightmare.
Plan ahead, especially if you want to get a later start, and be prepared to spend a lot of time searching for a parking spot. You could always opt to take an Uber or similar to the trailhead if you don’t want to risk not finding a place to park — which is a serious risk! If you’re not an experienced hiker, you can also consider booking a guided hike.
Things to do in Phoenix in Winter
Now that we’ve covered all of the essential information that you need to know before planning a winter trip to the Valley of the Sun, here are just some of the great things to do in the Phoenix metro area in winter.
Desert Botanical Gardens
One of the top destinations on any Phoenix itinerary no matter the season would be the incredible Desert Botanical Gardens in Papago Park.
This 140-acre (57-hectare) botanical garden is filled with walking trails and exhibitions displaying all of the unique flora native to the area. There are also local art instalments to view and the wonderful butterfly pavilion that is filled with countless butterflies — a great place for both kids and adults!
If you happen to be visiting the botanical gardens in December, make sure to attend Las Noches de las Luminarias or the Luminaria Nights. This event runs through the entire month of December it includes thousands of luminarias lining the pathways of the gardens to a truly magical effect.
If you’re not familiar, luminarias are simply brown paper bags filled with a bit of sand to weigh them down with a small candle inside. In the evening, they are lit and give off a lovely glow — it is a very popular holiday light decoration in this area of the world.
The Luminaria event is one of the longest-running traditions of the gardens and has been taking place since 1978 and continues to be one of the most popular events the gardens put on.
Regardless of whether you visit for the Luminarias or simply have a daytime trip to the gardens, you can purchase tickets online through the Desert Botanical Gardens website .
Phoenix Zoo
Also located in Papago Park is the Phoenix Zoo which, in December, puts on a holiday light event known as Zoolights. This light exhibition is particularly good if you’re travelling in Phoenix in winter with kids, but it really appeals to all ages — especially if you’re an animal lover!
There are animal-themed lights lining all corners of the Zoo and visiting in the nighttime also gives a unique advantage of seeing the nocturnal animals out and about, something you don’t get to experience in the daytime.
If you happen to be visiting outside of December, the Phoenix Zoo is still very much worth the trip. As the largest privately-owned zoo in the country, there are lots of great animal exhibits and demonstrations to enjoy. A childhood favourite of mine has to be the squirrel monkey enclosure!
You can purchase tickets on the day at the zoo or, to save time, you can buy them online in advance here.
McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park
If you’re travelling with kids, one of the best winter destinations in Phoenix (well, Scottsdale) is the McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park. This park spans about 30 acres (12 hectares) and is full of wild west-themed playgrounds, a train museum and even a small passenger train that winds its way around the park.
What makes this a great winter destination, however, is the holiday lights display that is on from late November to early January each year. Here, you can ride the small passenger train through an array of spectacular and festive lights and really feel the spirit of the festive season.
Like visiting the zoo or the botanical gardens, heading to the railroad park in the winter is also a great idea outside of the holiday season as it is far more enjoyable when you aren’t contending with the sweltering heat.
Entry into the park itself is free, however, there is a fee to ride the train. It is also encouraged to book tickets for the holiday lights online in advance to your visit.
Barrett-Jackson Car Auction
If you’re interested in classic cars and wondering what to do in Phoenix in winter, then consider planning a visit around attending the Barrett-Jackson Car Auction. This collector car auction takes place in January of each year in Scottsdale and is packed to the brim with incredible collector cars.
Though the price tag on these vehicles is really only accessible to those in the upper echelon of earners, it can still be worth attending just to see the cool classic cars. The auction takes place at the WestWorld event centre in Scottsdale.
Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show
If you’re visiting the Phoenix area in February and love horses, then make sure to get tickets to the incredible Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show that is also put on at the WestWorld event centre.
This horse show has multiple different rings with a variety of competitions all featuring the Arabian horse breed. You can also find food stalls and lots of trade stalls for everything horse-related you may want to purchase. The event includes over 2,400 horses and is one of the largest Arabian horse shows in the world.
The event generally takes place in the last couple of weeks of February.
Of course, one of the absolute best things to do in Phoenix in winter is to hit one of the many hiking trails. There are countless different options throughout the city and surrounding suburbs – the most popular including Camelback Mountain (both the advanced Echo Canyon trail and the easier Cholla trail) and Piestewa Peak.
If you want to venture a bit further, opt to head to South Mountain or north to Pinnacle Peak. There are tons of options and the cooler temperatures of the winter mean that you can go at most times of the day without overheating. If you want to go on a guided hike, you can consider these sunrise or sunset hikes.
Alternatively, if you want to see the beauty of Phoenix from above without breaking a sweat, then consider booking a hot air balloon trip!
Cactus League Spring Training
One of the most popular events that takes place in Phoenix each year is Cactus League Spring Training. If you’re a baseball fan, a portion of the nation’s top teams come to the Phoenix area to play training games ahead of the beginning of the season in the summer.
This is a major event that draws countless visitors each year and tickets can be affordable to come by. However, despite the name being “Spring” training, the first games actually start in the end of February meaning that you can likely include a game if you’re planning a winter trip to Phoenix!
Winter Day Trips
If you’re planning on spending a bit of time in the Phoenix area and are considering exploring more of the great state of Arizona, there are a number of incredible day trips you could take.
For instance, if you’re interested in keeping in the warmer part of the state, consider driving from Phoenix to Arizona’s second city of Tucson taking in all of the great things to do there. If you would rather spend more time outside in nature, then you could also head to nearby Saguaro National Park and take in the incredible cacti that pepper the landscape.
If you want to head north, then make sure to pack your jacket. Visiting a town like Sedona in winter is a wonderful idea as the town is absolutely beautiful if you’re fortunate enough to experience it underneath a blanket of snow. A day trip to Sedona is really never a bad idea no matter the season.
If you don’t mind driving a bit and want to experience a lot of snow and winter temperatures (and even some skiing), you could even head to Flagstaff.
This university town has a lot of cool things to do and is home to the nearby Arizona Snowbowl, the state’s only ski resort. Keep in mind that if you’re visiting Flagstaff or Sedona you will need to make sure that you have proper winter attire as the climate is very different to that of Phoenix.

5 Great National Parks Near Phoenix To Visit In The Winter

Phoenix is the perfect winter destination, with its clear blue skies and moderate temperatures. It’s no wonder visitors flock to the city, many of them to stay the whole winter. Affectionately nicknamed snowbirds, many retirees even move to Greater Phoenix, part of the Valley of the Sun, to get away from the freezing temperatures, snow, and ice of their hometowns.
Getting away from the cold need not mean sitting in one place, though. While Greater Phoenix itself has plenty to offer, with world-class museums and desert trails in town, the city is also surrounded by national parks worth a visit. And I am not just talking about the Grand Canyon. Everyone who visits Arizona will take a trip to see this wonder of the world. But much closer to Phoenix, lesser-known national parks offer great day trips without subjecting the adventurous to colder temperatures or long drives.
These National Parks are all within two hours driving distance from Phoenix. They showcase high and low desert environments and boast perfect weather in the winter. These are the parks that you would avoid in the heat of the summer, but as temperatures get cooler, being outdoors in these spots becomes a joy. You might even see desert flowers dotting the landscape of one of the greenest deserts in the world (when you visit in winter, you’ll notice this). Whether you choose to visit significant archeological sites or enjoy unspoiled Arizona nature, these parks offer the best of both experiences all winter long.

1. Casa Grande Ruins National Monument
About an hour’s drive from Phoenix, Casa Grande Ruins National Monument makes a great day trip from the city, giving its visitors a glimpse into the lives of the early inhabitants of the Sonoran desert.
Built by the Ancestral Sonoran Desert People sometime around 1300 A.D., the site features the largest prehistoric structures built in the Southwest: Casa Grande, or Big House, which the site is named for. The oral history of the O’Odham people, the modern-day descendants of those who built these structures, confirms that Casa Grande was a ceremonial center. Built at the crossroads of an intensive system of irrigation canals, it also served as a trading center for the surrounding ancient villages.
You can learn all about the history of these ancient people and their way of life in this hostile environment by visiting the indoor museum at the visitor center. Then walk outside and follow the trail through a few smaller structures and visit the highlight of the site, the Great House, Sivan Vah’Ki.
The self-guided tour is a short, easy walk around the ruins. But in the winter, from November to April, you can join an hour-long guided tour led by a park ranger. Though you can’t enter the Great House even with the tour due to safety precautions, you’ll learn a lot about the area and its history. Before leaving, don’t forget to walk over to the Ball Court on the other side of the parking lot.

2. Montezuma Castle National Monument And Montezuma Well
About a 1.5-hour drive from Phoenix, Montezuma Castle National Monument has nothing to do with the Montezuma most of us are familiar with. Its name is a misnomer. Its first Western visitors, who could not imagine anyone other than the legendary Aztec king building such a “castle,” called it Montezuma. But the site is neither a castle nor the ancient home of a king.
One of the best-preserved in the Southwest, featuring 20 rooms, the five-story cliff dwelling was actually home to an entire village of indigenous people. Called Sinagua by the Spanish, (which means “without water”) these people lived and built a civilization in this harsh environment. Although no natural river was flowing at the site, the Sinagua weren’t actually without water. Instead, they built a canal around the site to bring in enough water for the village.
The short, paved interpretive trail takes visitors to the monument on a winding path to the cliff dwelling and the canal, which is shaded by mature sycamore trees. A winter visit offers not only pleasant weather but also a chance to see water flowing through the ancient canal.
About a 20-minute drive from Montezuma Castle, Montezuma Well is an oasis — a geological marvel of the desert. The sinkhole, created over 10,000 years ago, looks like a huge bowl filled with water. A short trail from the ranger station leads to the well. If you’re up for some stairs, you can also take the side trails off the main loop closer to the water.

3. Tuzigoot National Monument
About two hours from Phoenix, Tuzigoot National Monument is a perfect winter day-trip destination. Hot and exposed in the summer, the pleasant temperatures in the winter help visitors enjoy this ancient pueblo sitting on a hilltop in the high deserts of Arizona.
The ancient village, built and inhabited by the same Sinagua people of Montezuma Castle, was a farming community, housing around 250 people at one time. With the oldest structure dating from 1000 A.D., the site features 97 ground-level rooms.
The museum showcases artifacts excavated at the site in the 1930s. Start your visit there to learn about the people who built these structures and lived here thousands of years ago. Then follow the paved interpretive trail through Tuzigoot Pueblo and Tavasci Marsh.
If you visit Tuzigoot and Montezuma Castle in November, you’ll also have an opportunity to witness indigenous cultural events. Native American Heritage Month is celebrated at both sites as they host cultural events and indigenous arts and crafts shows each weekend of the month.
Visiting Tuzigoot or Montezuma Well during the winter months — between September and May — also offers opportunities for bird walks led by park rangers and interpreters for those interested.

4. Tonto National Monument
About two hours from Phoenix, Tonto National Monument showcases two Salado cliff dwellings in the Sonoran Desert. Tonto’s inhabitants were a mixed people who archaeologists now refer to as the Salado.
Around 700 A.D., the Sonoran Desert people from around Phoenix settled here and mixed with the local population. Later, between 1100 and 1150 A.D., the Ancestral Puebloans and Mogollon people migrated and also settled here. The result was a cultural melting pot of several thousand people that led to a distinct culture.
The Salado built the two dwellings of Tonto overlooking the Rio Salado (and, now, Roosevelt Lake) around 1300 A.D. For the next half a century, their agricultural community thrived there, but as the climate became arid by the end of the 1300s, life became increasingly difficult, and the Salado left by 1450.
Start your visit at the monument’s newly remodeled museum, which showcases artifacts from the site. Then take the self-guided tour of the Lower Cliff Dwelling. The 1.5-mile trail is paved, but steep, and it takes about one hour round-trip. To visit the Upper Cliff Dwellings, you need to join a guided tour, offered in the winter season from January to April.

5. Saguaro National Park
Showcasing the nation’s largest cactus, the symbol of the American West, Saguaro National Park is a two-hour drive from Phoenix, right by the city of Tucson . With temperatures ranging in the 70s and 80s, winter is the perfect time to visit this desert park and enjoy walks among the giant cacti. With over 150 miles of designated trails, you can find one to hike no matter your fitness level.
Separated by the city of Tucson, Saguaro National Park has two districts, Saguaro East and West.
The East or Rincon Mountains District offers a scenic drive called the Cactus Forest Loop Drive, which offers amazing views of the Rincon Mountains. Take the short one-mile loop hike along the Freeman Homestead Interpretive Trail to an old homestead foundation and wander among a grove of large saguaros and a cool desert wash — a seasonal dry riverbed. During heavy rainstorms, water flows through desert washes, often turning them into fast and relatively deep rivers. But as soon as the rain stops, the water dries up. A few days later, the only sign of there ever having been water in a wash is the area’s vegetation, which is greener than its surroundings.
If you are there at the right time, you might see great horned owls along this trail. If you’re up for a slightly longer hike, take the Hope Camp and Ridgeview Trail. At two miles long and 400 feet elevation, it’s still relatively easy to hike. Panoramic views of Rincon Peak and the surrounding saguaro-filled desert reward you for your effort. Wildflowers might add to the view in late November or February through March, and after a rainy day, you’ll see quite a few waterfalls along the trail.
The West or Red Hills Tucson Mountain District has its own separate visitor center that offers a great orientation program that presents the Native American perspective of the giant saguaro. One of the easiest hikes on this side, the Valley View Overlook Trail, starts at the Bajada Loop and offers views of the Avra Valley and distant mountains. The Signal Hill Picnic Area offers views of hundreds of ancient petroglyphs .
If you hike in the desert at any of these sites, remember to carry water, wear a hat, and use sunscreen. Even if the weather seems perfect, with temperatures in the mid to high 70s, you are still in the dry desert, where it’s easy to get dehydrated and the sun is strong even in the winter.

Enjoy Christmas decorations all over the place and play in tons of fresh snow and sled riding. There’s a booth of North pole with Santa Clause perfect for picture taking.
6. Christmas Shopping At The Mall
Looking for the perfect gift for your loved ones? The best place to go to is at the malls. One of the fun things to do this December in Phoenix is joy hopping these malls to find the perfect gifts.
Phoenix Christmas shopping destinations include high-end shopping centers like the Biltmore Fashion Park. The shopping center is home to retailers like Williams-Sonoma, Pottery Barn and Macy’s.
For vintage goods, the Melrose District and Brass Armadillo are the perfect spot. Both are antique malls in the metro Phoenix area.
7. Glendale Glitters
You can also go to the historic downtown Glendale. The historic downtown is magnificently lit up and decorated for the holiday season. Stay after sunset and you’ll witness the widely celebrated Glendale glitters.
Arizona is all about magical places, especially in December. In Glendale Glitters, you will find a million LEDs on display across almost all blocks of Glendale. The display usually starts from Thanksgiving until January. Visiting this town during December is indeed one of the fun things to do this December in Phoenix. Glendale has a rich past and history making it one of the interesting places to visit in the state.

Phoenix Attractions: 25 of the Most Popular Spots to Visit
Updated: October 27, 2022
Phoenix attractions range from the beautiful outdoor Desert Botanical Garden to the incredible Musical Instrument Museum.
The city is also known for the incredible murals in and around the Roosevelt Arts District and Chase Field, which is the home to the Arizona Diamondbacks baseball team.
Some of the other highlights on our list of the top 25 attractions to see include the family-friendly Phoenix Zoo, the incomparable Heard Museum, the awe-inspiring heights and views from both Papago Park and South Mountain, and much more.
For car buffs, you'll want to check out the Penske Racing Museum.
Read on for more details about each one including tips on what to expect from each one during your stay in the Valley of the Sun.
Disclaimer: I receive a small commission from some of the links on this page.
1. Desert Botanical Garden
The Desert Botanical Garden is one of my favorite outdoor Phoenix attractions during any season of the year.
This garden encompasses more than 140 acres of land (with more than 55 under cultivation) and includes more than 50,000 plants, many of which are rare or endangered. Along with the plants, you can often see rabbits, lizards, and many different types of birds.
It is perfect for everyone and you could easily spend a whole day here and not see everything.
It is especially wonderful to come in the evening to watch the sunset over the valley. The botanical garden includes 5 major walking paths, 2 restaurants, a library and a gift shop.

2. The Heard Museum
The Heard Museum is an internationally known and respected museum focusing on everything related to Native American peoples.
The museum has been newly renovated and has distinct exhibits for each of the different tribes and cultures.
This allows you to travel through them and see the similarities and difference between the cultures.
It is quite incredible to see how some tribes, who were only miles away from each other, have such different art and belief systems.
With over 21,000 square feet, this museum is able to have both permanent exhibits, and traveling exhibits from other museums, and from artists that you would not be able to see anywhere else.
If you are looking to take a break as you walk through the Heard, they have a café, an outdoor courtyard, and museum shops. You are welcome to enter the gift shop, café, or the stores even if you do not purchase a ticket to the Heard Museum.

3. Roosevelt Row Murals
Located in the hip and fun Roosevelt Row Art District, you will find an amazing collection of murals. These murals are primarily produced by local artists.
Many focus on cultural and political statements about what is happening to this area, the city, and the world.
Something that we love about this area is that many of the murals are painted over by the artists, so you can often find something new and different whenever you go there.
The most famous area is the 1 1/2 Street murals which have a whole block full of murals from many different artists.
It makes it very easy to see a lot of them, and different styles, all in one small area. Also, something else we love is that there are so many murals around this area since they are hidden behind houses, in alleys, and behind buildings.
The nice thing is that you can still see them and take photos no matter where the murals are in this district.
In case you are hungry or thirsty, there are lots of great restaurants and bars around this area too. It's one of my favorite Phoenix Attractions.
4. Camelback Mountain
If you like hiking, then this Phoenix attraction is a perfect place to go out and see everything this beautiful desert has to offer.
There are two trails on Camelback Mountain, with Cholla being one and the other being Echo Canyon. The mountain tops out at about 2,700 feet so it is not going to take you a long time to get to the summit.
However, they are both difficult climbs, so you'll want to be prepared before you head out on them.
If you want to tackle them, they are very much worth it since the summit offers 360-degree views and can see from miles.
We suggest you bring a water bottle, some food, and a good hat since the temperatures in the appropriately named Valley of the Sun can get quite hot.
Camelback Mountain is about 20 minutes from downtown Phoenix, so it is easy to get there no matter where you are at in the city.
Note: Parking is only allowed from sunrise to sunset, so you'll want to plan accordingly.
5. Phoenix Art Museum
This is a must visit for art lovers of all types.
With over 20,000 pieces of art, from all over the world, you will be sure to find many pieces that will enthrall and enchant you.
There are 9 areas, ranging from Latin American, to Asian, to European and pretty much everything in-between. These include photography, paintings, sculptures, and other types of art.
Both first time visitors and those returning for a second or third time will love their traveling exhibitions.
Some of our favorites have included ones on Japanese bowl and ceramics, Ansel Adams' exhibit on how he made his prints, and "Sweet Land of Funk" which is based on the Funk style of art.
Trust us, there is always something new and fun! It's another of the Phoenix attractions that you do not want to miss!
6. Phoenix Zoo
As the song says, "It's all happening at the zoo" and they are right about that as this is one of the best family-friendly Phoenix attractions.
It is almost impossible to explain how much there is to do at here, so we've collected just a small glimpse of your choices.
You can check out the African area which has lions, rhinos, and tigers just to name a few. The Tropics Trail has orangutans, jaguars, elephants and more.
The Arizona Trail has local species like bobcats, parrots, javelinas (they are really ugly but fun to see!) and other creatures.
Last but not least, there is the Children's Trail which lets the little ones get up-close and personal with animals like emus, an ocelot, and my favorite, the golden lion tamarins.
We really love that kids of all ages can check out the petting zoo to really get the feel of the zoo. There are tours, events, a restaurant and a gift shop.
There is also the "Cruise the Zoo" tour where you can drive your car through the zoo to see it in a very different way. It is a fun way to see the animals while keeping nice and cool if it is too hot outside.
>> F ind out more about the Phoenix Zoo
7. Phoenix Attractions: Papago Park
If you want to get outside, and into a bit of nature, then Papago Park is the place for you.
It is very close to downtown Phoenix and easy to get to anytime of the day. One of the things that we love is that most the trails are very easy, and they don't take a lot of effort to get up or go down them.
You can get great views all around and you'll be enthralled by the massive buttes that jut up from the ground as you hike through the park.
If you want to do something more than just hike at the park, there is an archery range, a lake where you can go fishing, the Papago Park golf course and many other activities.
You will see lots of hikers, runners, and mountain bikers here as it is such a popular place and so easily accessible for all.
This is also where you will find three other great Phoenix attractions here: Phoenix Zoo, the Hole in the Rock , and Desert Botanical Garden.
The park is open from sunrise to sunset, but you can hike the trails from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. These hours may change depending on the season, so you'll want to check ahead.
8. Musical Instrument Museum
Simply stated, there is no other museum like this anywhere else in the whole world.
As one of the top Phoenix attractions, it has basically every type of musical instrument from around the globe that you can imagine!
Not only do they have musical instruments, they have memorabilia from musicians too. Some of these pieces include Elvis Presley's actual military uniform, masks from different parts of Africa, full outfits from Asia, and so much more than we can even being to tell you about here!
The beauty of this museum is that are instruments from 5,000 BC and continuing up until today and they are constantly having new exhibits and shows.
There is also a special kid's room where they can play music and explore what different instruments sound like as they become musicians of the world.
There is a very cute gift shop, where all the pieces for sale are specially made by the artists and certified, to support them.
There is also a restaurant in case you are hungry and an outdoor area to eat at or just relax.
>> Learn more about the amazing Musical Instrument Museum
9. Butterfly Wonderland: Rainforest Experience
The name seems to say it all, but there is so much more here than just butterflies.
Like the name states, you truly will experience being in the rainforest when you walk into this massive greenhouse.
The Butterfly Wonderland is home to over 70 different species of butterflies and in total there are many thousands of them flying around you!
Not only are there butterflies, but there is a Koi fishpond, a few cute chickens, and a bunch of sleepy tree frogs just hanging out.
There is a short movie explaining the life of the butterfly if you want to learn more about the butterflies after or before walking around the area. It is very educational and fun.
There is the Rainforest Reptile Exhibit, which lets you get up close and personal with these slithering beauties (don't worry they are behind glass so you are safe), a totally fun honey bee exhibit where you can see them work constantly making honey, and so much more.
If you get hungry, there is an "Edible Insect Station" where you can actually eat chocolate covered ants, scorpion lollypops, and other "delicious" things.
As for us, we tend to prefer normal food, so we tend to go the "normal" café that is located on the grounds.

10. Heritage Square
Most people think of Phoenix as being new and hip, which it is. That being stated, if you want to travel back in time, to the late 1800s, then Heritage Square is the place for you.
You can just walk around the area, but if you really want to experience the olden days, you'll want to go to the visitor center, check out the displays, and then buy tickets to the Phoenix attractions all around the square.
There are galleries to view so you can experience what it was like living in this area back in the day, tours of the Rosson House, and The Bungalow, where you can eat some snacks and buy some memorabilia.
They also have traveling exhibits and a few restaurants if you need a break after walking around and seeing the neighborhood.
Now, I've left the best for last as you'll definitely want to go into the Rosson House. This almost 3,000 square foot mansion is amazing and perfectly preserved.
Also, if you are into a bit of the supernatural, you just might be able to go to their "Seances and Spiritualists" tour depending on the day and date of your visit. WOOOOOOO!!!!! SPOOKY!!!!!
11. McCormick - Stillman Railroad Park
"CHOO CHOO AND ALL ABOARD!!!!" is what you'll be saying when you visit this fun and one of a kind place.
This is one of our favorite Phoenix attractions because it is fun not only for kids, but for kids of all ages (like us). You can learn just about everything regarding trains in this old-time train park.
After that, make sure to grab a train at Stillman Station and cruise around the park. You can also ride a carousel where you can go around and around and check out loads of displays including ones where they show how to build a model railroad.
Something that we love is that you can visit this park for free anytime you want. You will have to pay for the train ride, and the carousel, but that is only if you want to take one.
So, if you just want to hang out, go ahead and do that.
If you want a bite to eat, head over to "Hartley's General Store" and grab some ice cream, a hot dog, or something else that looks good.
12. South Mountain
If you are looking for a little privacy in the outdoors of the Valley of the Sun, then South Mountain is the place for you!
With over 16,000 acres of land, this park is one of the largest in the whole United States of America. There are three main mountain peaks and loads of trails for walking, running, mountain biking, horseback riding, and more.
Cresting at 2,300 feet, Dobbins Peak is the highest part of the park where the public is allowed because of safety reasons (you are not allowed to climb any higher).
We love Dobbins Peak since we can walk up to it, but if we are feeling lazy, we can also drive up it on the appropriately named Summit Road.
You will get an amazing view of the whole valley when you are up here, and it is absolutely worth the time to go there especially if you want to see a magical sunset.
Hours are usually from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. but sometimes extend out to 11 pm, so you'll want to plan accordingly and check the schedules.
13. OdySea Aquarium
There are some Phoenix attractions that just are impossible to describe and OdySea Aquarium is one of them.
This massive aquarium is unlike any that we've seen anywhere on our travels around the globe. It houses more than 10 exhibition areas, ranging from oceans and lakes all over the world, and each one is spectacular.
Some of these include the Deep Ocean exhibit where you take an escalator down UNDER the sea and walk through a glass tunnel as if you were actually there.
Another favorite is the Bizarre & Beautiful. I won't even try to explain that, but you can just imagine what might be there.
We love that they have special programs like the "The Penguin Encounter" where you can pet a bunch of cute furry friends in their habitat.
Trust us, touching them is totally different because their feathers are so soft, and they are so happy for you to do that to them!
Another favorite is the "Shark Tour" where you get to walk around a pool full of sharks and see them up close (don't worry, you won't touch them and they won't touch you!).
As mentioned above, this is just a bit of what is here, since it is impossible to go "in-depth" on everything that the OdySea Aquarium has without running out of space on the page!
>> Learn more about what you'll experience at the aquarium here
14. Taliesin West
Taliesin West was designed by the famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright in 1937 and is an UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The house was incredibly advanced for its time and it was his winter home to escape the brutal Wisconsin winters. It was specially made to contour with Arizona's landscape and formations.
It was built with local desert rocks, with wood laid on top of that, and then covered with concrete.
The colors, the angles of the building, and the glass covered main areas are so amazing and majestic compared to almost any other buildings anywhere in Arizona..
Not only was this a home for Wright and his wife, but is has now become a teaching center, home to a cabaret studio, outdoor music pavilion, and so much more inside and outside the house that are spectacular in design and artistic elegance.
Note : You cannot buy public tickets individually. The only way to visit Taliesin West is to go on the guided tours that last 1 to 3 hours.
We suggest booking them in advance as they are very popular and sell out quickly.
15. Western Spirit: Scottsdale Museum of the West
This is one of the premiere Phoenix attractions and is entirely dedicated to all art and culture from the Western United States of America.
Not only is this a museum, but it is also an educational center so visitors can learn about the different cultures, peoples, art styles, and how the west came to be up to until today.
It houses 8 exhibit areas, a a gift shop and restaurant, and a 135-seat multimedia auditorium.
Some of the art includes paintings by Georgia O'Keeffe, Will James' Cowboy Artist and Author, pottery art created by the Hopi Native People and much more.
The museum is usually open every day of the week except Monday. It also is closed during most holidays.
16. Chase Field
This impressive baseball park will amaze you when you go for a tour. It opened in 1998, which was the first day of the Arizona Diamondbacks becoming a Major League Baseball team.
It also became the first stadium to have a retractable roof since it can get incredibly hot in Phoenix or there can be a monsoon which will flood the field in just a few minutes.
You can learn about all of this, and more like the dbTV which is one of the largest high-definition TVs in the world, the D-Backs pool in right field, and other information about this gorgeous stadium.
Chase Field is home to the MLB Arizona Diamondbacks baseball team. It is always a great experience to watch a game there since the weather is perfect underneath their retractable roof.
As well as the Arizona Diamondbacks playing their home game there, there are also other sporting events and concerts. Some of the bands that have played here include Billy Joel, Kenney Chesney, and others.
Fun fact : The massive roof takes only 4.5 minutes to open or close and costs just 2 or 3 dollars because it was built to glide perfectly.
17. Phoenix Attractions: Arizona Science Center
Located in the heart of downtown, The Arizona Science Center has almost 400 permanent exhibits that allow you to get up close and fully interact with them.
Some of these include fun ones such as Solarville, where you can learn all about solar energy.
One of our favorites is the Forces of Nature. This is where you are in a fully immersive studio where storms are all around you by screens, a moving platform beneath you, and you can hear and feel the wind.
There are also traveling exhibits and many different demonstrations and programs while you visit here.
This center is very spacious since it is over 40,000 square feet, has a massive planetarium, an IMAX theater, a gift shop and a restaurant if you get hungry or thirsty.
Every time we go, we always learn something new and are amazed at how incredible science can be and what it can do in our lives.
18. Children's Museum of Phoenix
If you have kiddies, with ages starting from a few days to 10 years old, this is a must visit for you and them.
This museum is ranked as one of the top three children's museums in the USA. They are proud of that and that they want your kids to touch everything you can here.
Their whole point is to help kids feel secure and to learn, enjoy, and experience things for the first, or depending if you've been here before, the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or 100th time!
Something we love about this museum is that not only do they have over 40,000 square feet for your kids to play in, they have over 300 play experiences that your kid can experience on 3 different floors.
They also have fun programs and classes that will help expand your child's mind such as yoga, music, how to become an artist, and so many more that you will never run out of things to do, or learn, no matter how many times you visit with your little ones!
Also, if you are a kid at heart, there will definitely be fun things for you to do also, so don't be afraid to experience all that the Children's Museum has to offer you and your family.
19. Pueblo Grande Museum Archeological Park
Unlike many museums that want you to stay back and not interact with the exhibits, this one is set specifically to encourage you to do just that.
It is set both indoors and outdoors since they want you to experience what life would have been back in the years of 450 AD to 1450 AD.
This museum holds 4 different areas with the first being the indoor exhibit dedicated to the Hohokam people.
There are pieces of artwork, blueprints for the massive canal systems they built, and other amazing structures like the Big House where they studied the sky using astronomy.
The other main sections of the museum are outside and allow you to walk around, and sometimes inside, places such as The Adobe Compound, The Pit Houses, the Desert Oasis, and our personal favorite, The Ball Court.
It really is amazing to see what the Hohokam people's lives would have been like and experience a bit of their culture even in today's world.
If you bring your little ones along, there is a special hands-on children's gallery called, "Dig It!" And, trust me, they will dig it. If that isn't enough, they also have changing exhibits so you can always see something new.
20. Penske Racing Museum
Drop the flag and away we go to one of the fastest Phoenix attractions!
This museum is going to get your heart pumping as you'll want to race away with one of the many gorgeous cars on exhibit here. Even though the cars totally "rev our engines," we also love that this museum is so much more than just them.
It has many of the awards and trophies that Penske racing team has won, including 17 Indianapolis 500 championships!
Some of the cars on display include a replica of that 1963 Pontiac Catalina that Roger Penske drove to win the 1963 Riverside 250.
All that speed usually tires us out, so we need to take a moment to grab a bit to eat at the Penske Racing Museum pit stop called the Turn 4 Café on the 2nd floor.
Feel free to eat or drink whatever you want as you overlook the test track and check out the sites. There is also a store if you want to take home some toys or books.
You can even buy hand-signed shirts and memorabilia from people who have driven for the Penske Racing Team!
21. Tovrea Castle at Carraro Heights
If you've never heard of Tovrea Castle, you shouldn't be surprised as many locals have no idea this incredible, and strange, structure even exists near Phoenix.
This castle was originally going to be a casino, but then became a home, and finally was bought by the Phoenix parks system. It has over 5,000 cacti, and over 100 different varieties, all around the castle and the 44-acre area surrounding it.
Originally constructed in 1928, the castle was built in a three-story style that resembled a wedding cake (we told you it was strange) and is made of pine wood and stucco.
It had fallen into disrepair and that is why the park system took it over as they knew it was too special of a building to let die.
Now it has been fully restored and is the majestic residence it was back when it was first built.
Note: Tours are limited, and it is incredibly difficult to buy tickets. There is a lottery system and you must apply FAR in advance of your trip.
So, if you can't get tickets, you should be able to drive by loop 202 near Van Buren and 52nd Street even just to see it from the road since it is so magnificent.
22. Castles n' Coasters
Since we are on the subject of castles, Castles N' Coasters is one of our favorite Phoenix attractions whenever we want to get out in the sun and have some fun!
This is the perfect place for kids, and kids of all ages, since there is so much to see and do. Just a sample of your choices include a mini golf course ranging from 4 - 18 holes, over 150 arcade and pinball games, 20 rides and attractions, bumper cars, and loads more to experience.
Now, since we talked about the castles, we have to talk about the coasters, and this is where it really gets fun.
One of our favorites is the Desert Storm which takes you on not just one, but two loops, as you ride around it. Another is the Splashdown, which you can guess what happens to you on that ride.
If you really want to test your fear of heights, you can try the Sky Diver where you are dropped from way up in the sky and start falling instantly.
Once you get your feet back on the ground, and your legs stop shaking, you might to grab a bite to eat or a drink.
Since they have 5 food and drink bars, you are going to find a place to sit no matter where in the park you are at that time.
23. Japanese Friendship Garden of Phoenix
You might not think that you can find peace, serenity, and calm in the middle of downtown Phoenix, but this is the perfect place for that.
The city of Phoenix, and the city of Himeji in Japan, are sister cities and wanted to share a piece of Japan here to show their love for each other. The garden was built in 1996 and has only become more beautiful and enjoyable since then.
If you just want to get away for a bit, this is a perfect place for that as walking around the garden, and the lake, will give you that peace of mind on your busy trip.
There is so much to do beyond just relaxing in this beautiful garden. Some of the choices included in a stop at this relaxing garden are taking part in one of the tea ceremonies, moving slowly in a tai-chi class in the afternoon, or even an Ikebana Japanese floral arrangement class.
We love all three of these as it takes us away from the hustle and bustle of the city. There are many more, so you'll want to check the schedule and plan ahead.
You can also take guided tours if you want to learn more about this garden from a trained docent.
24. SMoCA: Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art
Known as SMoCA by locals, this museum opened in 1999 and has been flourishing ever since.
When you first see the building, you'll be amazed by the beauty and artistry of its exterior. Then when you enter, you'll be able to visit the 4 exhibit areas that include the museum's permanent collection and the traveling exhibits that are changing throughout the year.
So, no matter how many times you visit, you will see something new among the most contemporary art from around the globe.
Speaking of something new, we love that this museum is home to the always enjoyable "Knight Rise " by the famous artist, James Turrell. His work seems to be very simple, but it is the simplicity and grace which makes it so special and unique.
It is a permanent piece that allows you to see the sky through a large hole above you.
Because of the way it is designed, it almost looks like the sky is falling towards you. There are also colored lights in the walls that give you have a different perspective compared to the sky's the natural colors.
It really is something to behold and we like to just relax and spend some time sitting under it and watching the world, or sky, go by.
Another reason we love "Knight Rise" is that it is free for anyone to visit during museum hours.
25. Kid Friendly Phoenix Attractions
There are so many kid friendly Phoenix attractions that you will, and your little ones, will be hard pressed to figure out which one(s) they will want to do!
Jill and I think that The Valley is one of the best vacation spots for parents and their kids. This is because there are many museums, parks, fun places to hike and climb, and loads of other things to do and explore.
Some of our favorites include the OdySea Aquarium, Butterfly Wonderland, Castle N' Coasters, the Musical Instrument Museum which has a specific area just for kids to play music, the Phoenix Zoo, and last but not least, the Children's Museum of Phoenix.
However, these are just a sample, check out below to find out about them and so many more!

Best day trips from phoenix.
A popular destination for travelers who love sun and warm weather, Phoenix offers ample hiking, relaxing and sightseeing opportunities. U.S. News considered sights, culture, proximity and expert and traveler feedback to determine the Best Day Trips from Phoenix. Read on below and vote for your favorite destinations to help form next year's list.
Grand Canyon National Park
Montezuma castle national monument, petrified forest national park.
One of the country's most popular national parks, the Grand Canyon is about a three and a half hour drive north of Phoenix. But if you hit the road early, it's worth it to be able to walk along the Rim Trail, snap photos from Yavapai Point and explore the Grand Canyon Village. The scenery here – from the deep gorges to the towering rock formations – is otherworldly.
Sedona sits north of Phoenix and can be reached by car in around two hours or in about three hours by shuttle from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Spa lovers and adventure enthusiasts will both find fun things to do here. Plan to pencil in some time for hiking the famous red rocks and seeing the heightened energy spots called vortexes, then end your day with a relaxing massage or facial at a Sedona spa.
Tucson – about two hours south of Phoenix – is one of the sunniest spots in the United States, seeing an average of 350 days of sun each year. What's more, temps here typically hover in the 60s or higher year-round. If the pleasant weather isn't enough to woo you, Tucson's beautiful natural and cultural sights should. Saguaro National Park (filled with cacti) and the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum are two highlights.
Approximately an hour and a half north of Phoenix, Montezuma Castle National Monument makes for a superb cultural day trip. Here, travelers will find a set of preserved cliff dwellings once inhabited by the Sinagua people hundreds of years ago. Visitors can explore the pueblo ruins and various archaeological sites, hike the trails at Montezuma Well and enjoy ranger talks.
Head to Flagstaff to hike through Walnut Canyon National Monument and check out Sunset Crater National Monument. The latter, once a volcano, features interesting lava rock formations and an easy mile-long hiking trail. After a day spent outdoors, make your way downtown to relax with a meal and a local brew. Flagstaff is located about two hours north of Phoenix.
About a three and a half hour drive northeast, this destination is quite unique. Petrified Forest National Park stretches across 200,000 acres and is home to one of the largest concentrations of petrified wood in the world. Travelers recommend seeing the Painted Desert, learning the park's geography at the Rainbow Forest Museum and hiking through the park's scenic trails.
A day trip to Prescott should be filled with boating, kayaking and fishing in Watson Lake, soaking up the Arizona sun. The striking blue waters of the lake are framed by granite boulders and hiking trails, which also make for great photo ops. After a day on the lake, check out downtown Prescott's historic area, breweries and eateries. This city is less than a two-hour drive from Phoenix.

Steakhouse to brunch: Here are the best restaurants in metro Phoenix, according to readers
In January we shared our annual list of the 100 essential restaurants of 2024 . It's a collection of the locally owned restaurants we keep going back to, curated by not only the dining team, but other editors and reporters who cover the Valley's music, travel, arts and entertainment scenes. Then we asked local chefs about the restaurants they can't live without.
Ever since the essentials list was released, we've been asking readers to tell us about their favorite restaurants and places they feel are vital to the metro Phoenix dining scene.
And you answered with passionate, thoughtful recommendations that ranged from hidden gems to iconic fine dining. In no particular order, we're delighted to share this list of 19 essential metro Phoenix restaurants, according to The Arizona Republic readers.
Best, according to the best: Chefs absolutely love these 10 metro Phoenix restaurants
Cups N' Crepes
This is a rare quiet retreat in Ahwatukee. Always consistent with lots of choices of crepe fillings, plus they will always mix up a custom request. They do salads and bagels, too. This is a breakfast and lunch place. I bring small groups in or just drop in for coffee and a bagel when errands and traffic are too much.

Christo’s Ristorante
Locally owned, Christo’s has been in business for 30 plus years and has always had great food. The "go-to" place when my husband and I wanted a special lunch or dinner or to take out-of-town visitors to. The menu is varied, not just Italian, but has chicken, fish, veal dishes and more including specials with various preparations. Included with dinner is soup, which changes each day and all delicious, plus salad. They are open for lunch Monday through Friday, dinner Monday through Saturday. White tablecloths and napkins, impeccable service but not stuffy atmosphere.

Kevin Binkley was executive sous chef at the Inn at Little Washington, which is a Michelin 3 star restaurant. Next, he was a chef at the French Laundry, also a Michelin 3 star, owned by the famed Thomas Keller, arguably the best American chef of all time. We have been to the French Laundry several times and absolutely love it. ...Kevin Binkley is a treasured gem in our local food community and among the very best, not just in Phoenix, but in the country. Our city is fortunate to have him. Ask any local chef in town who they look up to and admire among the ranks here in Phoenix, and I suspect many of them will have Kevin at the top of their list.

Wong's in Avondale
Wong's was the only restaurant within 5 miles when we first moved to Avondale. We have enjoyed Wong's for more than 30 years. We usually do takeout on Saturday night. I was there a few weeks ago and they were very busy. Customers were waiting patiently, outside in the cool weather.

For over 11 years, the dedicated team at Vovomeena has been serving amazing food that is entirely made in house and is locally sourced. The staff treat everyone like family, including regulars like my husband and me. The warm welcome we receive every time we visit only enhances the amazing food. Vovomeena is the standout local restaurant on Corporate Corner. It’s ironic that Vovomeena is on Corporate Corner because this restaurant doesn’t cut any corners in making the very best food and beverages for their loyal customers.
My husband’s favorite is the B.M.O.C. because the smoked pork chop is so flavorful and tender. I lean toward the Banging Pocket with the pita that acts like the perfect wrap to keep the scrambled eggs, Gouda and Schreiner’s sausage warm. The Pain Perdu is perfect for sharing and elevates bread pudding to the sublime. Their Japanese Cold Brew Coffee is the perfect beverage to accompany their scratch made foods and provides just the right caffeine buzz to start off the day.

The Eleanor
I have a great breakfast/brunch place. It is my essential restaurant. The Eleanor opened in September. The vibe in that place is amazing and the service is great. The food is consistently great. One of the reasons I love it is there aren’t that many great restaurants in south Scottsdale that aren’t geared to the 20-something crowd.

The owner is hands-on, and you see him there all the time. The food and service are consistently good. And, they have their own parking lot which is a premium in Old Town.

Yo Pauly's New York Pizza Co.
The best, New York style pizza! I am from New York and it can hold up against any place there. In fact, when I went back recently, I thought Yo Pauly's was better! In addition to the pizza they have the best chicken wings. While I enjoy many of the other Italian dishes, the pizza and wings are my favorite. And their cannolis, also much like back east, and the best I’ve had in the Valley to date. It's a weekly visit for Sunday dinner and many times a weekly lunch spot!

Restaurant Progress
Great atmosphere, great food and wine list, great service.
Details: 702 W. Montecito Ave., Phoenix. 602-441-0553, progressphx.com .
Via De Los Santos
We have been going there for too many years to count. Consistent great family style Mexican food. And it's one of the few that serve calabacitas and/or sides of zucchini and corn. Their tamales are excellent. Unfortunately, they took down the velvet paintings, but it is still full of old Mexican charm. GREAT tequila selection. Never disappoints and is a great place to take out of towners who can't get good Mex in their hometown.
Details: 9120 N. Central Ave., Phoenix. 602-997-6239, viadelosantosaz.com .
Lovecraft Ale on 32nd Street and Cactus. New Mexican style BBQ food. It is delicious. They have the best queso dip I have ever had. They make a prime rib (there is an entree, a sandwich and a salad every weekend) that is out of this world amazing. It is juicy, tender, with a smoky flavor. I also typically get the chimichangas smothered in queso. Flavors are amazing! My husband loves their green chile burrito.

Ghost Ranch
Ghost Ranch in Tempe (wonderful New Mexican style) and the greatest frozen prickly pear margaritas on earth.
Details: 1006 E. Warner Road, Tempe. 480-474-4328, ghostranchaz.com .
Hana Japanese Eatery
We have been eating here ever since the place opened. Their sushi is fresh and delicious. They create specials that are unique and want you to keep coming back. The owners are always there to greet you. It is neighborhood spot that keeps you coming back for the regular menu and for the creative dishes they prepare. We often gather a group and go there for a shabu-shabu dinner that you need to request in advance.
— Garthanne D.

Zinc Bistro
This is our special occasion go-to restaurant. Our favorites here are the mussels marinière (me) and the flat iron steak with madeira sauce. For dessert we must have the chocolate soufflé!

Zinc Bistro: This luxurious Scottsdale sandwich is all about French technique and indulgence
Original Breakfast House on 32nd Street and Thunderbird
This spot is a gem. Owner John Stidham is outside greeting guests coming in most days. Everything I have had on their menu is delicious. The menu is huge. One of my favorites is the asparagus and goat cheese scramble. Such an amazing combination of flavors. The French toast is the best you will get anywhere. I have also had the chilaquiles, which are so good, so filling, so flavorful. My husband loves their chicken fried steak and eggs too. They only accept cash and for a reason I love — they would rather give their employees the money that would have gone to the credit card companies. And speaking of employees they are all so happy! They have very little turnover, which is not too common for a restaurant.

First & Last
Love this place! Food's great! Cocktails are top notch and you can’t beat the service and ambiance!
Details: 1001 N. 3rd Ave., Phoenix. 602-975-8297, firstandlastphx.com .
Cherry Blossom Cafe
We love this place for its food and service. The staff are great at getting your food served to you quickly and while it is still hot. We like their sushi and any of their noodle dishes. My husband loves their Gomoku Yaki Udo with a great assortment of seafood. I love their Spicy Gyoza Pot and their Nasu-Miso eggplant. Our friend loves their Bolognese.
Details: 914 East Camelback Road, Phoenix. 602-248-9090, cherryblossom-az.com .
Miracle Mile Deli
They are iconic, historic and locally owned and operated staples in the Valley. Why do I love MMD? First of all, Josh Garcia , the VP of the restaurant gives his heart to that establishment every single day. You'll find him working there most every single day, while also making sure the events and businesses who hire them for catering are taken care of. Stop by and I bet you'll see some familiar faces there. Former politicians, tv anchors/reporters, sports icons, etc. dine there because of the customer service and the great food. Josh works very hard to offer a quality experience.

Organ Stop Pizza
Because, come on, they are the most unique dining establishment in the state, heck, most of the United States. The only other "Pizza and Pipes" concept left from the boom in the 70s and 80s is Organ Piper Pizza in Milwaukee. Organ Stop Pizza will celebrate 52 years in the Valley in 2024. They are home to the Mighty Wurlitzer organ, the largest theater pipe organ in the US. They are one of the few places in town to still have a salad bar (and they still have great sanitary requirements for it.) The pizza sometimes gets a bad rap, but did you know the recipe for it was created with the help of a Disney chef? The critically acclaimed Yorgos Lanthimos film Poor Things is finally available on streaming. The black comedy fantasy film is an adaptation of Alasdair Gray ’s 1992 novel of the same name, which won the Guardian Fiction Prize and the Costa Book Award (formerly Whitbread Award), and echoes elements of Mary Shelley ’s Frankenstein , but looks at the concept from a new and very different perspective. Poor Things is a fantastic tale of the evolution of a young woman named Bella Baxter, who is brought back to life by an unconventional genius scientist, Dr. Godwin Baxter. Bella begins to evolve under the guidance and protection of Dr. Baxter until her hunger for knowledge and exploring the world takes over. She experiences romance with the slick and depraved lawyer, Duncan Wedderburn, and runs off with him on a whirlwind adventure around the world. Told through a journey of romance and self-discovery, Poor Things explores themes of freedom, equality, and sexual liberation.
Oscar-winner Emma Stone stars as the film’s protagonist, Bella, with Willem Dafoe as Goodwin, Mark Ruffalo as Duncan, and Ramy Youssef as Max McCandles. Poor Things also marks a reunion for Stone and Lanthimos in their third collaboration . The duo had earlier worked together on The Favourite , the 2018 period dark comedy-drama which won several BAFTAs, an Academy and a Golden Globe Award, and the 2022 short film Bleat . For everyone wanting to be swooned over by Stone’s brilliant performance and get lost in the fantastical world of Lanthimos, here’s a quick guide on how you can watch Poor Things .

Searchlight Pictures released the first official trailer for Poor Things in May 2023, followed by several new trailers and featurettes, and the latest one in November 2023. From all the promotional videos, if there’s one thing that stands out about this film, it’s the signature filmmaking style of Lanthimos. The trailers show a colorful yet bizarre and surreal world where Stone’s Bella Baxter is finding herself in her resurrected mind and body. The film, as also said of the original novel, is presented as a brand-new interpretation of Frankenstein’s monster, albeit in a fantastical setting. There’s a certain air of mystery around the plot and its characters, where you feel you know what’s happening and yet, not quite enough. The latest trailer, like the rest, is also packed with odd and uncanny elements, like the way Bella dances, talks, or eats. Though she is a living being but is not yet completely evolved like the rest of society. All the clips of Poor Things give a peek into Bella’s resurrection and what she desires, but to find out how far she goes in becoming her own person and a fully evolved being, you have to watch the rest of the film.
Poor Things is available to stream in the United States exclusively on Hulu. You can watch it by clicking the button below.

Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos is most recognized for making provocative , twisted films across black comedies, horrors, and psychological thrillers. Lanthimos’ works have earned several prestigious awards and recognitions. His films are known to explore thought-provoking subjects like human connections, solitude, self-discovery, and similar topics that break down human emotions and ideas through abstract storytelling and edgy cinematography. His latest film, Poor Things, joins the list, following these remarkable titles.
The Lobster
In his fifth feature and first English-language (feature) film, Lanthimos directs this absurdist black comedy drama that he produces and co-writes with Efthimis Filippou , his frequent collaborator. The Lobster follows David, separated from his wife and newly single, who checks into a hotel with several other singles like him. The hotel manager tells them that they all have 45 days to find a romantic partner, or they will all be transformed into an animal of their choice. Besides its esoteric theme , the film also features a stacked cast with Colin Farrell as David, along with Rachel Weisz , Jessica Barden , Olivia Colman , and Ben Whishaw , among others. Released in 2015, The Lobster met with critical acclaim and numerous accolades. It was nominated for Best Original Screenplay at the 89th Academy Awards, earning a BAFTA for Colman, and several other awards at the Cannes Film Festival, including the Jury Prize.

The Killing of a Sacred Deer
Two years after The Lobster , Lanthimos reunites with Filippou and Farrell for this 2017 film, which he also co-writes and produces. The psychological horror thriller also stars Nicole Kidman , and Barry Keoghan in main roles, with Raffey Cassidy , Sunny Suljic , Alicia Silverstone , and Bill Camp in various supporting roles. The Killing of a Sacred Deer follows Dr. Steven Murphy (Farrell), a surgeon who invites Martin Lang (Keoghan), the teenage son of his deceased patient, into his family. Having lost his father, Martin finds comfort in Steven and they develop a friendship. But as their friendship grows, Steven’s wife and children begin to fall sick one by one, turning the plot into an unexpectedly dark, surreal thriller. On its release, The Killing of a Sacred Deer was highly praised for its screenplay, metaphors, and direction. But most importantly, Keoghan’s performance as Martin was critically acclaimed, earning him several nominations and winning the Best Screenplay Award for Lanthimos and Filippou at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival.

The Favourite
There are countless period dramas and adaptations of historical characters and events, but this 2018 film will tell you why Lanthimos’ take on history stands apart. Although it’s billed as a dark comedy, The Favourite takes a much darker view of the world (of its time) and explores other grave themes like animal cruelty, ailments of the mind and body, and unfulfillment. Set in the early 18th century, against the backdrop of a war between England and France, The Favourite explores the relationship between Sarah Churchill , Duchess of Marlborough, and Abigail Masham , as they compete to become the favorite courtier of Queen Anne . Directed and produced by Lanthimos from a screenplay by Deborah Davis ( Marie Antoinette ) and Tony McNamara ( The Great ), the period drama stars Rachel Weisz, Emma Stone, and Olivia Colman in the lead roles, thus reuniting Weisz, Colman, and Lanthimos since The Lobster . On its release, the film earned widespread acclaim, particularly for the performance of Stone, Weisz, and Colman, with Colman winning an Academy, a BAFTA, and a Golden Globe for Best Actress. The film overall earned a total of 119 awards and 274 nominations, including Academy nominations for Lanthimos, Stone, and Weisz.
