Blimp Time Hop: Doobie Bros at the Civic Center In ’78
- Share on Facebook
41 years ago today, The Doobie Brothers came to the Civic Center on the brink of their massive success Minute By Minute . On August 23, 1978, this was their first Maine show. It was a sold-out night in Portland on the Livin’ on the Fault Line tour.
This was the Patrick Simmons/Michael McDonald led line-up which also featured Jeff “Skunk” Baxter on guitar. The new Doobies tunes spinning on BLM in the summer of ’78 were Little Darlin’ (I Need You) and Echoes of Love.
They of course included songs from the Tom Johnston era like China Grove and Long Train Runnin’ on this tour as well. Tom Johnston left the band in 1977 after being side-lined by health issues and growing creative conflicts.
Michael McDonald was recruited to be the lead vocalist during this time by “Skunk”, who worked with him in Steely Dan. It is so very cool that Blimpsters got to see this funkier version of the Doobies with the blue-eyed soul of Michael McDonald in their one and only Portland appearance.
Now, "take this message to my brother, you will find him everywhere."
Make sure you watch the whole thing so you don't miss the outrageously great piano jam!
The Doobie Brothers returned to Maine as a Patrick Simmons/Tom Johnston led outfit in the summer of ’91 at SEAPAC in OOB and as recently as the summer of 2016 in Bangor with Journey.

January 1978: When The Doobie Brothers Rocked WHAT'S HAPPENING!!
There was no more impactful or memorable musical moment on prime-time TV all year than the night of January 28, 1978. That's the night when none less than the Doobie Brothers appeared on the first of a two-episode arc on the wildly popular show What's Happening!! From the classic "Which Doobie you be?" phone call to the moment Rerun was caught bootlegging the Doobies' show (he was dancing too hard, natch), the appearance helped make the band a household name all across America.
"We had done the albums Takin’ It to the Streets and Livin’ on the Fault Line, and had just hired a new publicist named David Gest, who would later leave PR and go on to marry Liza Minelli," guitarist Patrick Simmons recalled in 2018 . "A few months into working with us, David came in and told us there was an opportunity to do this situation comedy.
"I was already familiar with What’s Happening!! , because I’d watched the show a few times. I thought it was hilarious and really liked the character of Rerun (Fred Berry). I had actually met Fred one summer at a show we’d done where he was dancing with The Lockers. Because it was a black situation comedy, I thought it would be an adventurous thing for us to do because our music had always been laced with R&B and soul. Not only would our fans tune in, but it would also expose us to a new audience of people who watched the show regularly, and would begin to listen to our music. I had no idea how we would fit into the show but thought it was something fun and different to do. David had great ideas, and that was certainly one of them."
The Doobie Brothers performed a wide selection of songs over the course of the two episodes. Raj, his sister Dee, Rerun and Dwayne attend a soundcheck during which The Doobies play "Echoes Of Love" and a cover of Marvin Gaye's "Little Darling (I Need You)" from 1977’s Livin' On The Fault Line . The main concert footage features renditions of hits "Black Water" and "Takin' It To The Streets," as well as another Motown gem, "Take Me In Your Arms (Rock Me A Little While)" and the instrumental outro of "I Cheat The Hangman."
The shows were packed with iconic moments, from Rerun getting busted with a massive tape recorder he was wearing to bootleg the show (at the behest of unscrupulous character, "Al Dunbar"), to Raj's comical phone call to the group's hotel room. Watch it below.
"We had been ripped off more than once, so we were certainly aware of it," Simmons said of concert bootlegging in the 1970s. "I remember at the time, there was a lot of stealing of intellectual property going on. People would record shows and then sell them to some label in some other country. Then the label would produce it and ship it back to America. It was a difficult process trying to get in and record a show without being seen, but there was a certain amount of money to be made. It’s silly looking back on it now, because everyone is recording shows on their phones and giving it away on YouTube, but it was a different world in those days."

The Doobie Brothers ‘ 50th anniversary reunion, which is heading into its third year of touring, is yielding some new music as well.
Co-founders Patrick Simmons and Tom Johnston tell Billboard they’re both stoked about the band’s next album, which it’s finishing work on with Michael McDonald. The singer/keyboardist was with the Doobies from 1975-1982 and has been back in the fold since anniversary tour was first announced in 2019 and then delayed by the pandemic.

Simmons, the lone Doobie Brother to be part of the band’s entire 54-year career, shared the news with fans via a social media post. “It’s very exciting,” he tells Billboard . “At one point I said, ‘Hey, we’re doing all these dates… As long as we’re doing this it would make sense to do a record. I think people would really get a kick out of that.'” With a chuckle he adds that, “We have yet to find out whether they’ll get a kick out of it or whether we’ll get kicked for it.”
The latter is unlikely, of course. McDonald’s tenure with the band — coming after he worked with Steely Dan — was among its most successful. Brought in to help the Doobies while Johnston was suffering burn-out, McDonald contributed hits such as “Takin’ It to the Streets,” “It Keeps You Runnin’,” “You Belong to Me” (co-written with Carly Simon) and “Real Love.” The triple-platinum Minute By Minute album in 1978, meanwhile, was the Doobies’ sole No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and won three Grammy Awards including Record of the Year for the hit “What a Fool Believes.”
Simmons says he’s particularly happy to have himself, Johnston and McDonald — as well as fourth Doobies principal guitarist John McFee — fully engaged together on the new album. “It’s nice that Tom has an opportunity to interact with Mike musically because they have so much in common as far as their love of R&B and the people they admire,” he explains. “They never really got a chance to interact in this way before, so it makes me happy to see that happening. It’s more than the sum of our parts, I think.”
He’s particularly stoked about a gospel-flavored track called “Walk This Road” that features lead vocals by both McDonald and Johnston as well as guest Mavis Staples. “John Shanks had assumed I knew Mavis was singing on it, and I had no idea,” Simmons says with a laugh. “I hear this voice and I’m going, ‘What the…? Tommy is really killing it;’ it didn’t’ really sound like him but he has that quality to his voice. But it was Mavis, and… the three of them singing, I’m telling ya it just floored me. And there’s a bunch of other great tracks, just some killer — for me, anyway — great songs on this record, some ferocious tracks.”
Johnston, meanwhile, predicts that, “This one’s probably a little moreso diverse because Michael is involved in all the tunes, but that’s fine, man. It’s an extension of what we’re doing on the road.”
In addition to the album, McDonald is publishing What a Fool Believes: A Memoir , co-written with Paul Reiser, on May 21. He also contributed to 2022’s Long Train Runnin’: Our Story of the Doobie Brothers , which Simmons and Johnston helmed.
“It’s been a lot of fun,” Simmons says of the continuing Doobies reunion. “We’re having a good time. It’s kind of continuing what we’ve been doing for the last 50 years and we still do things the same way for the most part, but having Mike on board again is great. I think it’s just having great artists, great creative people and talented guys that write the material… and then we have a great band. We’ve always had really great musicians, great singers. I think that really helps with how people perceive the band at any given time. It’s as strong now as it ever was.”

The Doobie Brothers to Release Their First Album with Michael McDonald in 44 Years as They Reunite on Tour
T he "Listen to the Music" band reunited in 2019 for their 50th anniversary tour, which has continued into its third year of touring
Fans of The Doobie Brothers don’t just have 2024 tour dates to look forward to.
The legendary rockers reunited with their core lineup in 2019 for a 50th anniversary tour that launched in 2021 after being delayed due to the pandemic, and have remained out on the road ever since. Having recently announced a massive string of 2024 dates , the group now featuring co-founders Tom Johnston and Pat Simmons, as well as longtime members Michael McDonald and John McFee, will also release a new album — marking their first with McDonald, 72, in 44 years.
Simmons, 75, and Johnston, 75, revealed their plans to release their 16th studio album and follow-up to 2021's Liberté in an interview with Billboard .

The two guitarists/vocalists expressed excitement about making new music with the former Steely Dan member, who was in The Doobie Brothers from 1975 to 1982 before officially rejoining nearly four decades later for the 50th anniversary tour.
“It’s very exciting,” Simmons told the outlet. “At one point I said, ‘Hey, we’re doing all these dates ... As long as we’re doing this it would make sense to do a record. I think people would really get a kick out of that.'”
The Rock and Roll Hall of Famers also spoke about how fulfilling it’s been to join forces in the studio with the keyboardist after so long, as he last appeared on 1980’s One Step Closer and hadn’t been on an LP with Johnston since 1975’s Takin’ It to the Streets . “[Johnston and McDonald] never really got a chance to interact in this way before, so it makes me happy to see that happening,” Simmons shared. “It’s more than the sum of our parts, I think.”
Although a title hasn't been announced and there’s no official release date, Simmons confirmed that “the songs are done” and revealed that he feels as though the project is about halfway towards completion.
Details are slim regarding what fans can expect from the new tracks, although there is at least one collaboration in the works. Billboard reports that a song called “Walk This Road” features lead vocals by McDonald and Johnston, as well as a guest performance by R&B/soul legend Mavis Staples .

It’s unclear if the “Listen to the Music” band will play new material out on the road, but they’ll be setting out on a 38-date North American tour later this year. The group will be playing shows in a handful of cities that they missed in recent years on their trek from June 15 until Aug. 30.

In addition to the live shows and forthcoming new music, McDonald will also soon release a memoir . Set for release on May 21, the book is titled What a Fool Believes and named for The Doobie Brothers’ Grammy-winning song.
The legendary songwriter collaborated on the memoir with actor Paul Reiser , and the two opened up about their collaboration to PEOPLE when the cover art was revealed late last year.
“The thing that was the most daunting was wondering if there ever even was a story there,” McDonald said. “Because my story really, I've always felt, existed more in the people I worked with. That was really basically my story. It wasn't really so much about me as my good fortune to work with a lot of different people.”
He continued, “But as we kind of moved along, the story emerged for me, and I think for the first time, I understood my own story a little better on a more personal level.”
