Visiting Chile? Learn how to validate the Covid Vaccines

By: Chile Travel - 12 January, 2022

travel to chile unvaccinated

Here is everything you need to know about the validation of vaccines in Chile.

Updated on July 12th, 2022

If you are planning to travel to Chile, we recommend you to have your Covid-19 vaccines , which need to be validated to gain access to the Mobility Pass . The pass is mandatory for going into hotels, restaurants, theaters, and to get on buses, among other tourism services.Get it here.

It’s important to point out that the validation of Covid vaccines in Chile has no expiration date and is a free procedure. Therefore, even if you are not sure about your trip, it is highly recommended to do it in advance.

Steps to validate Covid vaccines

For the Covid vaccines validation in Chile you must:

Step 1: go to mevacuno.gob.cl .

Step 2: Create an account in the “Email” section.

Step 3: Click over the “Create an account” link. This must be done with the e-mail address of each person who is going to travel.

Step 4: Once you’ve created your account, go to “Validation” in the main menu.

Step 5: fill out a form with personal information and attach documents that certify your vaccination. This information will be authenticated on a case-by-case basis by Ministry of Health officials, who will provide a response to the applicant.

Information to attach

As each country has different methods of certifying and authenticating vaccines, at the time of validating vaccines for entry into Chile, it is important that you attach different documents while filling out the validation form. For example, a digital certificate with electronic signature or a QR code that certifies that the information is issued by an official government agency, will be sufficient.

For those who have physical documentation, which cannot be corroborated in any electronic system, this must be accompanied by some additional background information such as passport and laboratory test results to certify that they have positive lgM/lgG antibodies against the coronavirus and if the document is not in Spanish or English, an authorized translation will most likely be requested.

The number of vaccines required will depend on the vaccination schedule of the country of origin.

Possible results of your validation request

There are three possible results for a Covid vaccine validation in Chile :

1. Incomplete: The application is rejected for being incomplete or inconsistent. The user may fill in the missing details or upload the missing documents and try again.

2. Valid: The application is accepted and the applicant’s data is added to the mevacuno.gob.cl registry, making his/her proof of vaccination available indefinitely, and with it the QR code for the the mobility pass.

3. Temporarily valid: if a person is abroad and presents a consistent, but not electronically verifiable record, he/she may temporarily enter the vaccination registry and have a mobility pass enabled only to enter the country and do his/her isolation at home. However, upon entry, additional background information may be requested.

Covid vaccines that can be validated in Chile

The Covid vaccines that can undergo the validation process in Chile are all the vaccines that have been approved by the Chilean Institute of Public Health (ISP), the World Health Organization (WHO), the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA).

Currently, these are:

  • Pfizer/BioNTech
  • Janssen (Johnson&Johnson)
  • Oxford/AstraZeneca
  • Generium (Sputnik-V)

Are there requirements to enter Chile?

travel to chile unvaccinated

Now that you have completed your vaccination validation, we will tell you about the requirements that must be met to enter Chile.

Travelers must complete an electronic ¨ Traveler’s Affidavit ” up till 48 hours before boarding at www.c19.cl . A negative result for a PCR test is not mandatory, but it is recommended. In Chile, PCR and antigen tests are randomly carried out on travelers at the point of entry (airport or border crossings).

As of May 1st, if you wish to enter as a tourist and you are from Venezuela, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, or Dominica , prior to your arrival in Chile, you must have a Transitory Stay Visa .

Vaccinated travelers in Chile can skip quarantine with a test on arrival

A week after opening its borders to international visitors, Chile is changing its entry requirements again. From November, the recently-introduced five-day quarantine period will be scrapped for vaccinated travelers who take a second negative COVID-19 test on arrival.

Some of the world's best hiking trails—through deserts, volcanoes and snow-capped peaks—will soon be available to tourists as Chile opens up to tourists, just in time for summer in the southern hemisphere. And while there are plenty of new attractions to look forward to, including a new UNESCO site , there are a few steps to consider before traveling there, regardless of your COVID-19 status.

Viña del Mar.jpg

All travelers are required to fill in the Travelers Affidavit no later than 72 hours before traveling. Under new rules announced today, visitors have the option to complete the full five-day isolation period announced in September or temporarily isolate while awaiting the results of a COVD-19 PCR test, which can only be taken in Chile.

In both cases, travelers will need to get their vaccination certificate validated by the Chilean health ministry through the mobility pass app before traveling to Chile, a process that could take about a month. Chile's public health secretary Paula Daza has warned travelers not to book their trip until that step is completed to avoid the potential hassle of rescheduling flights.

We are happy! As of October 1st our borders reopen for international visitors. Chile is Back! Plan your trip following the rules and sanitary measures. Find out everything you need to know before traveling here https://t.co/FlML9y1VVk pic.twitter.com/1d3tKBwqfu — Chile Travel (@chiletravel) September 16, 2021

Vaccines the Chilean Health Department is currently accepting include Moderna, Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson, AstraZeneca, Sinopharm, Sinovac, CanSino and Sputnik V.

In addition to testing, travelers will need to take out health insurance with a minimum coverage of $30,000 USD to cover any medical expenses should they contract COVID-19 on their trip. Once they're in Chile, a tourism spokesperson said "every person must comply with the traveler’s follow-up process, which is done over a period of 14 days and consists of daily self-reporting of health status, current location, and testing" through the mobility pass.

Chile has reported a successful immunization campaign with almost 87% of the eligible population fully vaccinated, according to the health ministry .

When borders reopen, visitors will be permitted entry through dedicated airports in the capital Santiago , the beach resort of Iquique , and Antofagasta , the gateway to the Atacama Desert . American Airlines is improving connectivity between the US and Chile by launching direct flights between New York and Santiago this month.

There are also plenty of exciting attractions for travelers to enjoy too. Earlier this year, Chile added its seventh UNESCO site: Arica and the mummies of Chinchorro . The Chincorro people are believed to be the world’s oldest ancestral civilization and their mummies date back some 7000 years, meaning they pre-date the Egyptian mummies by two millennia. The glass-protected mummies can be viewed at a smaller version of the anthropological Museum of San Miguel de Azapa , just outside Arica , before a new and larger version of the museum opens in 2024.

If Patagonia , Easter Island, Santiago , or Buenos Aires is on your travel wish list, you can finally start planning that trip. Chile and Argentina have announced that effective November 1, vaccinated international travelers can enter without having to quarantine.

After more than a year and a half of closed borders, Chile officially opened its borders to vaccinated international travelers on October 1, but with a mandatory five-day quarantine. As of November 1, Chile is dropping that quarantine requirement for vaccinated international travelers who submit to COVID testing, according to Chile tourism officials.

Vaccinated travelers will need to take a COVID-19 PCR test 72 hours prior to traveling to Chile and complete an online “Travelers’ Affidavit” form (which asks for travelers’ contact information, medical history, and previous travel history) within 48 hours of travel. In order to bypass the otherwise mandatory five-day quarantine, they will then need to take another COVID-19 PCR after arriving in Chile and isolate until a negative result is procured. Travelers will need to present proof of COVID-19 vaccination upon arrival, which they should upload prior to travel through the Chilean Ministry of Health’s online Mobility Pass .

Also required is proof of travel insurance to cover any COVID-19–related medical expenses with a minimum coverage of $30,000 for healthcare. International travelers must fly into Santiago, Iquique, or Antofagasta.

Unvaccinated travelers will be required to quarantine for seven days. All travelers, regardless of vaccination status, will be sent a daily email for up to 14 days of travel in which they will be asked to self-report their health status. Additional details are available through the Chilean Tourism Ministry .

Next door in Argentina, the borders are also opening on November 1 to fully vaccinated travelers who conduct a COVID-19 PCR test 72 hours prior to arrival, the country’s health minister announced on Twitter . As with Chile, another COVID-19 PCR test will be administered by local health officials after arrival in Argentina, and possibly a third test will be requested between the fifth and seventh day after arrival, per information provided by the U.S. Embassy in Argentina. Travelers are responsible for the costs of the COVID-19 tests.

Unvaccinated travelers arriving in Argentina will be required to quarantine for at least seven days.

The countries you can travel to without a vaccine

By Abigail Malbon

The 28 most popular countries you can travel to without a vaccine

Travel around the world is easier now, particularly for those who are fully vaccinated with an approved Covid vaccine – but some countries are allowing unvaccinated travellers to enter. Yet with restrictions constantly changing, how do the latest rules affect those who aren't fully vaccinated, and which countries are allowing tourists to enter if they're unvaccinated?

Where can I travel unvaccinated?

There are currently a number of countries that will allow visitors who have not been vaccinated to enter. A few of them are in Europe , and the others are slightly farther afield. We recommend always closely following UK health guidance, including having your Covid vaccine and booster if you are able to. Before travelling, you should regularly check government guidelines both for the country you might be considering visiting and for the UK when you return.

You can find the full list of countries allowing people to enter without a vaccine below:

Since 1 May 2022, unvaccinated travellers are able to visit the country without proof of a negative PCR or rapid antigen test. Passenger locator forms are also no longer required.

Arrivals may, however, be required to undergo a rapid Covid test on arrival. If you test positive on arrival in Greece, you (and those you are travelling with) will have to self-isolate for at least five days, either at home or in a hotel (this will be paid for by the Greek state). If you have no symptoms on day five you will be allowed to leave quarantine.

For holiday inspiration, see our guide to the best Greek Islands to visit .

Read the rules on travel to Greece .

2. Portugal and Madeira

Portugal ’s mainland and Madeira are open to travellers who have not been vaccinated, as long as they can prove they don't have coronavirus when they enter the country. To enter mainland Portugal, you will be required to show proof of a negative PCR test taken within 72 or an antigen test taken within 24 hours of departure for the country as well as complete and submit a traveller questionnaire before departure for the country. Self-administered tests are not accepted. Your temperature will also be screened on arrival.

To enter Madeira, you must register on the Madeira Safe travellers platform and download a QR code to present to airport staff on arrival. You must provide proof of a negative antigen test taken within 48 hours of departure that has been administered by a trained healthcare professional.

Your airline may deny boarding if you cannot show one of these documents when you check in for your flight. Check with your airline before you travel.

A blue mind

Unvaccinated adult travellers can enter Spain if they are able to show proof of a negative test taken before entering the country. Previously, only fully vaccinated travellers aged 12 and over could enter Spain from the UK, but the destination has relaxed rules slightly, so it is now accepting negative PCR tests taken in the 72 hours before departure for the country or negative antigen tests taken in the 24 hours before departure for the country in lieu of full vaccination in adults. However, those who cannot meet either criteria will not be able to enter.

As of 1 February, you need to have received your second jab between 14 and 270 days before travel to Spain and the Canary Islands to be classed as fully vaccinated. Children aged 12-17 no longer need to show proof of a vaccine, but will need a negative PCR test to enter.

Read the rules on travel to Spain .

Unvaccinated travellers can enter Croatia without showing proof of a vaccine or negative test. The requirement to fill out a passenger locator form also no longer exists.

Read the rules on travel to Croatia .

Unvaccinated travellers to  Cyprus  must provide proof of a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours before departure for the country or an antigen test taken in the 24 hours before departure for the country. Travellers over 12 may then be asked to take another PCR test upon arrival at Larnaca or Paphos airports, and remain in isolation until the result comes back (this should take roughly three hours). This costs €15–€19 and must be paid for by the traveller.

Read the rules on travel to Cyprus .

  • Northern Chile – Containing the Atacama Desert, this region can have temperatures as high as 32. Travellers should prepare for high heat as well as cold, as night can dip to -1.
  • Central Chile – This region has a Mediterranean feel to it. It has many beach areas that provide plenty of sunshine for travellers to enjoy throughout the year.
  • Southern Chile – With strong winds and icy areas, it is best to explore this area in the summer months. Temperatures are fairly low all year round and bringing layers is recommended.

How Safe Is Chile?

Chile is generally a safe and secure environment for travellers. Chile has the lowest amount of violent crimes in all the Latin America.

Demonstrations and street crimes do occur, especially in cities. In the metropolitan Santiago area, home invasions and vehicle thefts are more common. To avoid being a victim to these criminal acts, stay alert and aware of your surroundings.

Tourist areas can have pickpockets and be sites of some types of petty crime. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times and, when possible, travel in a group.

Take a Trip to Easter Island

One of Chile’s most unique places to visit is the Easter Islands. Sitting off the coast of Chili, this volcanic island is isolated in the heart of Polynesia.

The island is most known for its monumental statues called moai. These were constructed by Chilean inhabitants of the 13th-16th centuries. There are nearly 900 moai on the island, each is carved to portray humans with significantly large heads.

The best time to visit is in February to witness Tapati. This is a festival in which teams compete in challenges to honor the Rapa Nui culture.

What Should I Take To Chile?

While a developed nation, there is still some preparation needed for a trip to Chile.

  • Sunglasses – It is almost always sunny in Chile, especially near the beaches. Bring along a good pair of sunglasses to protect your eyes during your time outside.
  • Layers – Chile, especially in the northern region, has unpredictable temperatures. Bring layers of clothing such as a hoodie, sweater, or jacket.
  • Walking Shoes – There are a lot of parks and walking paths throughout Chile. Whether you are visiting a city, beach, or nature site, you should expect to be walking a lot. Comfortable walking shoes are key to helping you enjoy the trip.

Frequently Asked Questions: Guidance for Travelers to Enter the U.S.

Updated Date: April 21, 2022

Since January 22, 2022, DHS has required non-U.S. individuals seeking to enter the United States via land ports of entry and ferry terminals at the U.S.-Mexico and U.S.-Canada borders to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 and provide proof of vaccination upon request.  On April 21, 2022, DHS announced that it would extend these requirements. In determining whether and when to rescind this order, DHS anticipates that it will take account of whether the vaccination requirement for non-U.S. air travelers remains in place.

These requirements apply to non-U.S. individuals who are traveling for essential or non-essential reasons. They do not apply to U.S. citizens, Lawful Permanent Residents, or U.S. nationals.

Effective November 8, 2021, new air travel requirements applied to many noncitizens who are visiting the United States temporarily. These travelers are also required to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination. All air travelers, including U.S. persons, must test negative for COVID-19 prior to departure. Limited exceptions apply. See  CDC guidance  for more details regarding air travel requirements.

Below is more information about what to know before you go, and answers to Frequently Asked Questions about cross-border travel.

Entering the U.S. Through a Land Port of Entry or Ferry Terminal

Q. what are the requirements for travelers entering the united states through land poes.

A:  Before embarking on a trip to the United States, non-U.S. travelers should be prepared for the following:

  • Possess proof of an approved COVID-19 vaccination as outlined on the  CDC  website.
  • During border inspection, verbally attest to their COVID-19 vaccination status.
  • Bring a  Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative  compliant border crossing document, such as a valid passport (and visa if required), Trusted Traveler Program card, a Department of State-issued Border Crossing Card, Enhanced Driver’s License or Enhanced Tribal Card when entering the country. Travelers (including U.S. citizens) should be prepared to present the WHTI-compliant document and any other documents requested by the CBP officer.

 Q. What are the requirements to enter the United States for children under the age of 18 who can't be vaccinated?

A:  Children under 18 years of age are excepted from the vaccination requirement at land and ferry POEs.

Q: Which vaccines/combination of vaccines will be accepted?

A:  Per CDC guidelines, all Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved and authorized vaccines, as well as all vaccines that have an Emergency Use Listing (EUL) from the World Health Organization (WHO), will be accepted.

Accepted Vaccines:

  • More details are available in CDC guidance  here .
  • 2 weeks (14 days) after your dose of an accepted single-dose COVID-19 vaccine;
  • 2 weeks (14 days) after your second dose of an accepted 2-dose series;
  • 2 weeks (14 days) after you received the full series of an accepted COVID-19 vaccine (not placebo) in a clinical trial;
  • 2 weeks (14 days) after you received 2 doses of any “mix-and-match” combination of accepted COVID-19 vaccines administered at least 17 days apart.

Q. Is the United States requiring travelers to have a booster dose to be considered fully vaccinated for border entry purposes?

A:  No. The CDC guidance for “full vaccination” can be found here.

Q: Do U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents need proof of vaccination to return to the United States via land POEs and ferry terminals?

A:  No. Vaccination requirements do not apply to U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or Lawful Permanent Residents (LPRs). Travelers that exhibit signs or symptoms of illness will be referred to CDC for additional medical evaluation.

Q: Is pre- or at-arrival COVID testing required to enter the United States via land POEs or ferry terminals?

A: No, there is no COVID testing requirement to enter the United States via land POE or ferry terminals. In this respect, the requirement for entering by a land POE or ferry terminal differs from arrival via air, where there is a requirement to have a negative test result before departure.

Processing Changes Announced on January 22, 2022

Q: new changes were recently announced. what changed on january 22.

A:  Since January 22, 2022, non-citizens who are not U.S. nationals or Lawful Permanent Residents have been required to be vaccinated against COVID-19 to enter the United States at land ports of entry and ferry terminals, whether for essential or nonessential purposes. Previously, DHS required that non-U.S. persons be vaccinated against COVID-19 to enter the United States for nonessential purposes.  Effective January 22, all non-U.S. individuals, to include essential travelers, must be prepared to attest to vaccination status and present proof of vaccination to a CBP officer upon request. DHS announced an extension of this policy on April 21, 2022.

Q: Who is affected by the changes announced on January 22?

A: This requirement does not apply to U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or U.S. Lawful Permanent Residents. It applies to other noncitizens, such as a citizen of Mexico, Canada, or any other country seeking to enter the United States through a land port of entry or ferry terminal.

Q: Do U.S. citizens need proof of vaccination to return to the United States via land port of entry or ferry terminals?

A: Vaccination requirements do not apply to U.S. Citizens, U.S. nationals or U.S. Lawful Permanent Residents. Travelers that exhibit signs or symptoms of illness will be referred to CDC for additional medical evaluation.

Q: What is essential travel?

A:  Under the prior policy, there was an exception from temporary travel restrictions for “essential travel.” Essential travel included travel to attend educational institutions, travel to work in the United States, travel for emergency response and public health purposes, and travel for lawful cross-border trade (e.g., commercial truckers). Under current policy, there is no exception for essential travel.

Q: Will there be any exemptions?

A: While most non-U.S. individuals seeking to enter the United States will need to be vaccinated, there is a narrow list of exemptions consistent with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Order in the air travel context.

  • Certain categories of individuals on diplomatic or official foreign government travel as specified in the CDC Order
  • Children under 18 years of age;
  • Certain participants in certain COVID-19 vaccine trials as specified in the CDC Order;
  • Individuals with medical contraindications to receiving a COVID-19 vaccine as specified in the CDC Order;
  • Individuals issued a humanitarian or emergency exception by the Secretary of Homeland Security;
  • Individuals with valid nonimmigrant visas (excluding B-1 [business] or B-2 [tourism] visas) who are citizens of a country with limited COVID-19 vaccine availability, as specified in the CDC Order
  • Members of the U.S. Armed Forces or their spouses or children (under 18 years of age) as specified in the CDC Order; and
  • Individuals whose entry would be in the U.S. national interest, as determined by the Secretary of Homeland Security.

Q: What documentation will be required to show vaccination status?

A:  Non-U.S. individuals are required to be prepared to attest to vaccination status and present proof of vaccination to a CBP officer upon request regardless of the purpose of travel.

The current documentation requirement remains the same and is available on the CDC website . Documentation requirements for entry at land ports of entry and ferry terminals mirror those for entry by air.

Q: What happens if someone doesn’t have proof of vaccine status?

A: If non-U.S. individuals cannot present proof of vaccination upon request, they will not be admitted into the United States and will either be subject to removal or be allowed to withdraw their application for entry.

Q: Will incoming travelers be required to present COVID-19 test results?

A: There is no COVID-19 testing requirement for travelers at land border ports of entry, including ferry terminals.

Q: What does this mean for those who can't be vaccinated, either due to age or other health considerations?

A: See CDC guidance for additional information on this topic. Note that the vaccine requirement does not apply to children under 18 years of age.

Q: Does this requirement apply to amateur and professional athletes?

A: Yes, unless they qualify for one of the narrow CDC exemptions.

Q: Are commercial truckers required to be vaccinated?

A: Yes, unless they qualify for one of the narrow CDC exemptions. These requirements also apply to bus drivers as well as rail and ferry operators.

Q. Do you expect border wait times to increase?

A:  As travelers navigate these new travel requirements, wait times may increase. Travelers should account for the possibility of longer than normal wait times and lines at U.S. land border crossings when planning their trip and are kindly encouraged to exercise patience.

To help reduce wait times and long lines, travelers can take advantage of innovative technology, such as facial biometrics and the CBP OneTM mobile application, which serves as a single portal for individuals to access CBP mobile applications and services.

Q: How is Customs and Border Protection staffing the ports of entry?

A: CBP’s current staffing levels at ports of entry throughout the United States are commensurate with pre-pandemic levels. CBP has continued to hire and train new employees throughout the pandemic. CBP expects some travelers to be non-compliant with the proof of vaccination requirements, which may at times lead to an increase in border wait times. Although trade and travel facilitation remain a priority, we cannot compromise national security, which is our primary mission. CBP Office of Field Operations will continue to dedicate its finite resources to the processing of arriving traffic with emphasis on trade facilitation to ensure economic recovery.

Q: What happens if a vaccinated individual is traveling with an unvaccinated individual?

A:  The unvaccinated individual (if 18 or over) would not be eligible for admission.

Q: If I am traveling for an essential reason but am not vaccinated can I still enter?

A:  No, if you are a non-U.S. individual. The policy announced on January 22, 2022 applies to both essential and non-essential travel by non-U.S. individual travelers. Since January 22, DHS has required that all inbound non-U.S. individuals crossing U.S. land or ferry POEs – whether for essential or non-essential reasons – be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 and provide related proof of vaccination upon request.

Q: Are sea crew members on vessels required to have a COVID vaccine to disembark?

A:  Sea crew members traveling pursuant to a C-1 or D nonimmigrant visa are not excepted from COVID-19 vaccine requirements at the land border. This is a difference from the international air transportation context.

Entering the U.S. via Air Travel

Q: what are the covid vaccination requirements for air passengers to the united states  .

A:  According to CDC requirements [www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/noncitizens-US-air-travel.html | Link no longer valid], most noncitizens who are visiting the United States temporarily must be fully vaccinated prior to boarding a flight to the United States. These travelers are required to show proof of vaccination. A list of covered individuals is available on the CDC website.

Q: What are the COVID testing requirements for air passengers to the United States?

A:  Effective Sunday, June 12 at 12:01 a.m. ET, CDC will no longer require pre-departure COVID-19 testing for U.S.-bound air travelers.

Watch: 50 people injured, 13 sent to hospital after 'technical event' on flight

travel to chile unvaccinated

At least 50 people were injured Monday by what officials described as a "strong movement" on a Chilean plane traveling from Sydney to Auckland, New Zealand.

LATAM Airlines said in a statement that there was "a technical event during the flight which caused a strong movement." It did not elaborate on what happened.

Passengers were met by paramedics and more than 10 emergency vehicles when the flight touched down in Auckland.

About 50 people were treated at the scene for mostly mild injuries. Ten passengers and three crew members were taken to the hospital for checks and treatment.

One patient was believed to be in serious condition.

Passengers said a number of people were not wearing seatbelts when flight LA800 suddenly dropped. The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner landed at Auckland Airport as scheduled and was due to continue on to Santiago, Chile.

"LATAM regrets the inconvenience and injury this situation may have caused its passengers, and reiterates its commitment to safety as a priority within the framework of its operational standards," the airline said.

Incidents of severe turbulence have been increasing in recent years due to climate change, though it's unclear if turbulence was a factor in what happened on this flight.

If it turns out to be an issue with the plane, it would be the latest in the ongoing run of headaches and bad press for Boeing.

Regardless of the cause, LATAM 800 is a reminder for passengers to always wear their seatbelts while flying and obey the seatbelt sign whenever it's on.

Sara Nelson, president of the Association of Flight Attendants, previously told USA TODAY that unbuckled passengers put everyone in danger if the airplane makes an unexpected maneuver.

"The people who are not strapped in now also become projectiles themselves and can harm people when they come back down," she said.

New Wildfires Threaten Chile’s Pacific Coast

Several communities in the Valparaíso region were being evacuated. Fires along the coast killed more than 100 people last month.

The authorities were battling another round of dangerous wildfires along Chile’s Pacific Coast early Thursday morning, several weeks after blazes there killed more than 100 people .

The national disaster agency said on Wednesday night that several communities in the Valparaíso region were being evacuated. That part of the coast is dotted with towns that rise steeply from the ocean.

Fire crews were fighting three fast-moving blazes overnight that were contained but still burning, Carolina Tohá Morales, Chile’s interior minister, told reporters . She said one challenge was that the crew could not send planes to drop water at night.

While the extent of the damage was unclear, she added, the authorities estimated that it affected 15 to 40 homes.

Devastating wildfires swept through the region last month after erupting in Viña del Mar, a coastal resort city about 80 miles by road northwest of Santiago, the capital. They ravaged entire neighborhoods, trapped people fleeing in cars and destroyed thousands of homes.

President Gabriel Boric called those fires Chile’s worst disaster since a cataclysmic 2010 earthquake killed more than 400 people and displaced about 1.5 million more .

Learn actions you can take to stay healthy and safe on your trip. Vaccines cannot protect you from many diseases in Easter Island, so your behaviors are important.

Eat and drink safely

Food and water standards around the world vary based on the destination. Standards may also differ within a country and risk may change depending on activity type (e.g., hiking versus business trip). You can learn more about safe food and drink choices when traveling by accessing the resources below.

  • Choose Safe Food and Drinks When Traveling
  • Water Treatment Options When Hiking, Camping or Traveling

You can also visit the Department of State Country Information Pages for additional information about food and water safety.

Prevent bug bites

Bugs (like mosquitoes, ticks, and fleas) can spread a number of diseases in Easter Island. Many of these diseases cannot be prevented with a vaccine or medicine. You can reduce your risk by taking steps to prevent bug bites.

What can I do to prevent bug bites?

  • Cover exposed skin by wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and hats.
  • Use an appropriate insect repellent (see below).
  • Use permethrin-treated clothing and gear (such as boots, pants, socks, and tents). Do not use permethrin directly on skin.
  • Stay and sleep in air-conditioned or screened rooms.
  • Use a bed net if the area where you are sleeping is exposed to the outdoors.

What type of insect repellent should I use?

  • FOR PROTECTION AGAINST TICKS AND MOSQUITOES: Use a repellent that contains 20% or more DEET for protection that lasts up to several hours.
  • Picaridin (also known as KBR 3023, Bayrepel, and icaridin)
  • Oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE) or para-menthane-diol (PMD)
  • 2-undecanone
  • Always use insect repellent as directed.

What should I do if I am bitten by bugs?

  • Avoid scratching bug bites, and apply hydrocortisone cream or calamine lotion to reduce the itching.
  • Check your entire body for ticks after outdoor activity. Be sure to remove ticks properly.

What can I do to avoid bed bugs?

Although bed bugs do not carry disease, they are an annoyance. See our information page about avoiding bug bites for some easy tips to avoid them. For more information on bed bugs, see Bed Bugs .

For more detailed information on avoiding bug bites, see Avoid Bug Bites .

Stay safe outdoors

If your travel plans in Easter Island include outdoor activities, take these steps to stay safe and healthy during your trip.

  • Stay alert to changing weather conditions and adjust your plans if conditions become unsafe.
  • Prepare for activities by wearing the right clothes and packing protective items, such as bug spray, sunscreen, and a basic first aid kit.
  • Consider learning basic first aid and CPR before travel. Bring a travel health kit with items appropriate for your activities.
  • If you are outside for many hours in heat, eat salty snacks and drink water to stay hydrated and replace salt lost through sweating.
  • Protect yourself from UV radiation : use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15, wear protective clothing, and seek shade during the hottest time of day (10 a.m.–4 p.m.).
  • Be especially careful during summer months and at high elevation. Because sunlight reflects off snow, sand, and water, sun exposure may be increased during activities like skiing, swimming, and sailing.
  • Very cold temperatures can be dangerous. Dress in layers and cover heads, hands, and feet properly if you are visiting a cold location.

Stay safe around water

  • Swim only in designated swimming areas. Obey lifeguards and warning flags on beaches.
  • Practice safe boating—follow all boating safety laws, do not drink alcohol if driving a boat, and always wear a life jacket.
  • Do not dive into shallow water.
  • Do not swim in freshwater in developing areas or where sanitation is poor.
  • Avoid swallowing water when swimming. Untreated water can carry germs that make you sick.
  • To prevent infections, wear shoes on beaches where there may be animal waste.

Keep away from animals

Most animals avoid people, but they may attack if they feel threatened, are protecting their young or territory, or if they are injured or ill. Animal bites and scratches can lead to serious diseases such as rabies.

Follow these tips to protect yourself:

  • Do not touch or feed any animals you do not know.
  • Do not allow animals to lick open wounds, and do not get animal saliva in your eyes or mouth.
  • Avoid rodents and their urine and feces.
  • Traveling pets should be supervised closely and not allowed to come in contact with local animals.
  • If you wake in a room with a bat, seek medical care immediately. Bat bites may be hard to see.

All animals can pose a threat, but be extra careful around dogs, bats, monkeys, sea animals such as jellyfish, and snakes. If you are bitten or scratched by an animal, immediately:

  • Wash the wound with soap and clean water.
  • Go to a doctor right away.
  • Tell your doctor about your injury when you get back to the United States.

Consider buying medical evacuation insurance. Rabies is a deadly disease that must be treated quickly, and treatment may not be available in some countries.

Reduce your exposure to germs

Follow these tips to avoid getting sick or spreading illness to others while traveling:

  • Wash your hands often, especially before eating.
  • If soap and water aren’t available, clean hands with hand sanitizer (containing at least 60% alcohol).
  • Don’t touch your eyes, nose, or mouth. If you need to touch your face, make sure your hands are clean.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when coughing or sneezing.
  • Try to avoid contact with people who are sick.
  • If you are sick, stay home or in your hotel room, unless you need medical care.

Avoid sharing body fluids

Diseases can be spread through body fluids, such as saliva, blood, vomit, and semen.

Protect yourself:

  • Use latex condoms correctly.
  • Do not inject drugs.
  • Limit alcohol consumption. People take more risks when intoxicated.
  • Do not share needles or any devices that can break the skin. That includes needles for tattoos, piercings, and acupuncture.
  • If you receive medical or dental care, make sure the equipment is disinfected or sanitized.

Know how to get medical care while traveling

Plan for how you will get health care during your trip, should the need arise:

  • Carry a list of local doctors and hospitals at your destination.
  • Review your health insurance plan to determine what medical services it would cover during your trip. Consider purchasing travel health and medical evacuation insurance.
  • Carry a card that identifies, in the local language, your blood type, chronic conditions or serious allergies, and the generic names of any medications you take.
  • Some prescription drugs may be illegal in other countries. Call Easter Island’s embassy to verify that all of your prescription(s) are legal to bring with you.
  • Bring all the medicines (including over-the-counter medicines) you think you might need during your trip, including extra in case of travel delays. Ask your doctor to help you get prescriptions filled early if you need to.

Many foreign hospitals and clinics are accredited by the Joint Commission International. A list of accredited facilities is available at their website ( www.jointcommissioninternational.org ).

In some countries, medicine (prescription and over-the-counter) may be substandard or counterfeit. Bring the medicines you will need from the United States to avoid having to buy them at your destination.

Select safe transportation

Motor vehicle crashes are the #1 killer of healthy US citizens in foreign countries.

In many places cars, buses, large trucks, rickshaws, bikes, people on foot, and even animals share the same lanes of traffic, increasing the risk for crashes.

Be smart when you are traveling on foot.

  • Use sidewalks and marked crosswalks.
  • Pay attention to the traffic around you, especially in crowded areas.
  • Remember, people on foot do not always have the right of way in other countries.

Riding/Driving

Choose a safe vehicle.

  • Choose official taxis or public transportation, such as trains and buses.
  • Ride only in cars that have seatbelts.
  • Avoid overcrowded, overloaded, top-heavy buses and minivans.
  • Avoid riding on motorcycles or motorbikes, especially motorbike taxis. (Many crashes are caused by inexperienced motorbike drivers.)
  • Choose newer vehicles—they may have more safety features, such as airbags, and be more reliable.
  • Choose larger vehicles, which may provide more protection in crashes.

Think about the driver.

  • Do not drive after drinking alcohol or ride with someone who has been drinking.
  • Consider hiring a licensed, trained driver familiar with the area.
  • Arrange payment before departing.

Follow basic safety tips.

  • Wear a seatbelt at all times.
  • Sit in the back seat of cars and taxis.
  • When on motorbikes or bicycles, always wear a helmet. (Bring a helmet from home, if needed.)
  • Avoid driving at night; street lighting in certain parts of Easter Island may be poor.
  • Do not use a cell phone or text while driving (illegal in many countries).
  • Travel during daylight hours only, especially in rural areas.
  • If you choose to drive a vehicle in Easter Island, learn the local traffic laws and have the proper paperwork.
  • Get any driving permits and insurance you may need. Get an International Driving Permit (IDP). Carry the IDP and a US-issued driver's license at all times.
  • Check with your auto insurance policy's international coverage, and get more coverage if needed. Make sure you have liability insurance.
  • Avoid using local, unscheduled aircraft.
  • If possible, fly on larger planes (more than 30 seats); larger airplanes are more likely to have regular safety inspections.
  • Try to schedule flights during daylight hours and in good weather.

Medical Evacuation Insurance

If you are seriously injured, emergency care may not be available or may not meet US standards. Trauma care centers are uncommon outside urban areas. Having medical evacuation insurance can be helpful for these reasons.

  • Carry a photocopy of your passport and entry stamp; leave the actual passport securely in your hotel.

Healthy Travel Packing List

Use the Healthy Travel Packing List for Easter Island (Chile) for a list of health-related items to consider packing for your trip. Talk to your doctor about which items are most important for you.

Why does CDC recommend packing these health-related items?

It’s best to be prepared to prevent and treat common illnesses and injuries. Some supplies and medicines may be difficult to find at your destination, may have different names, or may have different ingredients than what you normally use.

Be sure to tell your doctor about your travel, including where you went and what you did on your trip. Also tell your doctor if you were bitten or scratched by an animal while traveling.

For more information on what to do if you are sick after your trip, see Getting Sick after Travel .
