DOT supports Coron’s sustainable tourism development to bounce back
CORON, PALAWAN — The Department of Tourism (DOT) expresses support for Coron’s sustainable tourism development to draw more visitors and hasten tourism recovery.
“Giving our recovery plans for Coron a major boost is the Sustainable Tourism Development Project or STDP, which will be launched this year and will run throughout 2026,” Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat remarked during the dialogue with stakeholders on Thursday, March 04, banking on the able leadership of Mayor Marjo Reyes, local industry captains and community beacons to provide the impetus for this high-impact project.
The STDP is an initiative under the Transforming Communities Towards Resilient, Inclusive, and Sustainable Tourism (TouRIST) program of the DOT.
The STDP, a collaboration among the DOT, the provincial government of Palawan, the municipalities of Coron and El Nido and the Asian Development Bank (ADB), is aimed at making Coron and El Nido’s tourism development sustainable and inclusive. A five-year project to commence by the third quarter of this year, the major components include urban infrastructure, ecosystems improvement and enterprise development.
For Coron, urban infrastructure projects will include water supply, sewerage system, drainage improvements and urban beautification. The ecosystems component will focus on the restoration of four key ecotourism sites, capacity building for marine protected area (MPA) management and alternative livelihoods.
“The STDP will help build the capacity of local stakeholders to protect and conserve Coron’s natural beauty and biodiversity and ensure that tourism benefits the local communities,” Puyat said.
Meanwhile, the DOT has vowed to continue providing technical assistance in the areas of product development, marketing and promotions and capacity building for both the local government and tourism workers.
The DOT has conducted rigid inspections and regularly monitors its accredited accommodation establishments (AEs) to ensure that minimum health and safety protocols are enforced. As of February 15, 2021, a total of 20 AEs have been accredited.
As part of the Bayanihan 2 program, the DOT has partnered with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) to extend Cash Assistance to affected tourism workers. For Coron, a total of 34 enterprises with 740 workers received their benefits amounting to ?3,700,000.00 as of March 2, 2021. For more affected workers to benefit from the program, the tourism chief has urged the local government and tourism enterprises to help facilitate issuance of documentary requirements.
“We hope that this financial aid from the government will help get our tour guides, tour operators, and other displaced tourism workers back on their feet,” the tourism chief said.
Likewise, with the decision to still require RTPCR tests before travel, the DOT’s partnership with the University of the Philippines-Philippine General Hospital (UP-PGH) and the Philippine Children’s Medical Center (PCMC) will continue to boost local travel with the 50 percent subsidy program.
Coron prides itself for being almost COVID free, which is a positive pull factor for visitors to enjoy the many beautiful bleach white sand beaches, large limestone cliffs, endemic terrestrial wildlife and rich marine ecosystem. It is home to Kayangan Lake, touted as cleanest lake in the country.
Often cited in many lists of top dive spots in the world, its main draw are the World War II Japanese wrecks as well as the other fun dive spots.
Coron is a top destination for both international and local travellers. In 2019, Palawan welcomed 1,987,605 visitors, 15 percent or a total of 292,549 of which visited Coron.
Coron has attracted some 2,900 visitors since it reopened on 01 December 2020.

Study rates Puerto Galera carrying capacity
- Ma. Stella F. Arnaldo
- March 9, 2021
- 2 minute read
THE municipality of Puerto Galera is looking forward to the completion by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) of an environmental study that will determine the popular tourism destination’s carrying capacity.
Puerto Galera Mayor Rocky D. Ilagan told the BusinessMirror that prior to the pandemic, tourist arrivals in the municipality were “about 4,000 to 5,000 [tourists] per day,” adding that the DENR will finish its study by September.
Separately, in a news conference on Tuesday announcing the formal launch of “Amazing Puerto Galera,” Ilagan said the DENR study will complement the municipality’s strict entry protocols. Tourists, he said, will have to pass QR scanning “so we will know exactly how many tourists come in. The DENR financed a carrying capacity [study] of Puerto Galera, the beaches, and the resorts … eventually we will have a clear understanding how many tourists can be accommodated by Puerto Galera.”
He added, “With the QR coding we will see how many tourists are in those particular areas. So if we reach 50 percent of capacity, we will stop the tourists from going to those tourism destinations. We can inform them via text not to proceed.”
Starting March 10, tourists will be allowed to enter Puerto Galera even without RT-PCR or antigen tests. Mindoro Oriental has opened its borders, and thus will now be fully accessible by regular ferry service from Batangas. When Puerto Galera slightly reopened to tourism in August, Ilagan said tourists were able to visit the municipality via special shuttle from Manila to Batangas, and then fetched by boat from Batangas arranged by the resorts. (See, “No more Covid tests for visitors at Puerto Galera,” in the BusinessMirror, March 9, 2021.)
Sustainable tourism in Palawan
Meanwhile, Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo Puyat said DOT will launch by the third quarter this year the Sustainable Tourism Development Project (STDP), which will run until 2026, aimed at hastening the tourism recovery of El Nido and Coron, in Palawan.
The STDP is an initiative under DOT’s Transforming Communities Towards Resilient, Inclusive, and Sustainable Tourism (TouRIST) program. It is a collaboration with the provincial government of Palawan, the municipalities of Coron and El Nido and the Asian Development Bank.
For El Nido, STDP projects will focus on improving the town’s drainage; managing solid waste by developing a landfill; managing tourism sites based on ecosystems; and developing enterprises and skills.
For Coron, projects include the development of a clean and dependable water supply, construction of a sewerage system, drainage improvement, and urban beautification.
“The STDP will help build the capacity of local stakeholders to protect and conserve [El Nido and] Coron’s natural beauty and biodiversity and ensure that tourism benefits the local communities,” said Puyat in a news statement.
As of February 15, 2021, a total of 20 accommodation establishments in Coron have been accredited by the DOT.
Oriental Mindoro and Palawan are under the Mimaropa (formerly Southwestern Tagalog) region. Other provinces include Mindoro Occidental, Marinduque, and Romblon.

5000 tourist arrivals a day ??? That is one ferry banka with 100 passengers arriving every 10minutes !!! If tourists stay 3 nights on average that would translate to 15000 beds and many times more that number during peak season. So can PG really accomodate tens of thousands of tourists at a time ?? Obviously NOT. Typical numbers inflation to gain funding for municipal nonsense projects.
I am not from PG. But every tourist is income for local establishments, jobs for the people, and income for the local government. Transport and environmental protection infrastructure can be put in place to enable the increase in tourism while protecting the environment. You have to balance between environmental protection and the need to grow the economy and provide room for people to improve their lives and pursue their dreams. An impoverished people, given no alternatives, will find any means to feed their family and clothe their children, even environmentally destructive means. People first.

Egypt and UNIDO Collaborate on Green Hurghada Project to Boost Sustainable Tourism
By Belal Nawar
Senior journalist.
Egypt and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) have signed an agreement on Tuesday 12 March for the “Green Hurghada project”, a project that aims to transform the tourism industry in Hurghada into a sustainable and resilient sector.
With investments of USD 3 million (EGP 146 million), the project will focus on mitigating greenhouse gas emissions, preserving biodiversity, and fostering the adoption of climate-smart technology and conservation practices in the tourism, energy, and transport infrastructure sectors.
The signing ceremony was attended by key officials such as the President of the Environmental Affairs Agency, Ali Abu Sunna, and UNIDO representatives including Patrick Gilbert and Jihan Bayoumi.
Egypt’s Minister of Environment, Yasmine Fouad, emphasized the project’s alignment with the country’s green recovery plans and its goal of promoting sustainable technology applications and encouraging green investments in Hurghada’s tourism sector.
Funding for the Green Hurghada project comes from the Global Environment Facility (GEF), a multilateral fund dedicated to addressing climate change and preserving biodiversity.
Over the course of five years, the project will implement measures to mitigate the impact of climate change and air pollution, conduct a strategic environmental assessment, and raise awareness about biodiversity conservation.
The Green Hurghada project builds upon Egypt’s successful experience in transforming Sharm El Sheikh into a green city, which served as a model for sustainable development.
Egypt’s efforts in Sharm El Sheikh include the introduction of electric vehicles, green certificates for hotels (assure guests that certified establishments adhere to strict environmental criteria to make a positive impact on the environment), and the elimination of single-use plastic bags.
Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt’s key tourist destinations on the Red Sea coast, attract millions of visitors annually. In 2023, these two destinations welcomed around seven million tourists, representing nearly half of Egypt’s total of 14.9 million visitors.

Tvel completes development of new fuel for Paks nuclear plant
!{Model.Description}
The full package of documents is handed over to the Hungarian customer, MVM Paks Ltd, for further licensing of the new fuel by the national nuclear power regulator, Tvel said.
The first fuel assemblies have also passed acceptance testing at Tvel's Elemash Machine-building plant in Elektrostal, Moscow region.
The new modification of VVER-440 second generation fuel increases the efficiency of fuel usage and advances the economic performance of the power plant operation, Tvel said.
The engineering contract for development of the new VVER-440 fuel was signed in late 2017. The development and validation work involved a number of Russian enterprises, including OKB Gidropress (a part of Rosatom machine-building division Atomenergomash), Bochvar Institute (material science research facility of TVEL Fuel Company), Elemash Machine-building plant and Kurchatov Institute national research center. At the site of OKB Gidropress research and experiment facility, the new fuel passed a range of hydraulic, longevity and vibration tests .
The first consignment of the modified fuel will be delivered to Paks nuclear power plant later this year. The four-unit Paks nuclear plant, which entered operation between 1982 and 1987 currently operate on a 15-month fuel cycle and supply around 50% of Hungary's electricity.
