2022 TOUR Championship: Final Field and Starting Leaderboard
Defending FedExCup champion Cantlay wins BMW Championship; Scheffler claims No. 1 seed
ATLANTA – The field is set for the 2022 TOUR Championship with the top 30 players in the FedExCup Playoffs Eligibility Points List qualifying following the BMW Championship. Patrick Cantlay captured his eighth PGA TOUR title and second of the season with a one-stroke victory over Scott Stallings at Wilmington Country Club in Wilmington, Delaware.
Cantlay, who will look to become the first player to successfully defend his FedExCup title, will start the TOUR Championship as the No. 2 seed and will be paired in Thursday’s first round with standings leader Scottie Scheffler, who finished T3 at the BMW Championship to reclaim the top seed.
The FedExCup Playoffs conclude this week at the TOUR Championship, presented by Accenture, Coca-Cola and Southern Company, where the top 30 players will compete for the FedExCup title as the PGA TOUR’s season champion. The first and second rounds will be broadcast live on Golf Channel from historic East Lake Golf Club on Thursday, Aug. 25 and Friday, Aug. 26 from 1-6 p.m. The third round will be broadcast on Golf Channel from 1-2:30 p.m. and on NBC from 2:30-7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 27, with the final round slated for Sunday, Aug. 28 from 12-1:30 p.m. on Golf Channel and 1:30-6 p.m. on NBC.
Scheffler’s four PGA TOUR victories during the 2021-22 season are the most of any player as he looks to become the third consecutive No. 1 seed entering the TOUR Championship to lift the FedExCup.
Other Player Storylines:
- Xander Schauffele (No. 4), who will make his sixth consecutive TOUR Championship appearance this week, has finished no worse than T7 in five previous starts at East Lake Golf Club: 1/2017, T7/2018, 2/2019, T2/2020, T5/2021. At No. 4 in the FedExCup, this is Schauffele’s highest position entering the TOUR Championship in his career.
- In search of his first TOUR Championship berth since joining the PGA TOUR in 2011, Scott Stallings (No. 12) finished runner-up at the BMW Championship to secure his spot at East Lake. It was the three-time PGA TOUR winner’s first runner-up finish or better on TOUR since the 2015 Farmers Insurance Open.
- Two PGA TOUR rookies qualified for the TOUR Championship, with Cameron Young (No. 14) and Sahith Theegala (No. 28) earning their place among the top 30 without a win on TOUR this season.
- In total, 10 players will make their TOUR Championship debuts this week: Will Zalatoris (No. 3), Sepp Straka (No. 9), Scott Stallings (No. 12), Cameron Young (No. 14), Matt Fitzpatrick (No. 15), Max Homa (No. 16), Tom Hoge (No. 23), K.H. Lee (No. 26), J.T. Poston (No. 27) and Sahith Theegala (No. 28)
- Five former FedExCup Champions qualified for the TOUR Championship: Patrick Cantlay (No. 2), Rory McIlroy (No. 7), Justin Thomas (No. 13), Jordan Spieth (No. 18) and Billy Horschel (No. 22)

- Four players advanced to the TOUR Championship after beginning the BMW Championship outside of the top 30: Scott Stallings (No. 46 to No. 12), K.H. Lee (No. 33 to No. 26), Adam Scott (No. 45 to No. 29) and Aaron Wise (No. 31 to No. 31)

2022 Tour Championship: Format, standings explained
By max molski • published august 23, 2022 • updated on august 23, 2022 at 9:46 am.
It all comes down to Atlanta.
The 2022 FedEx Cup Playoffs will conclude in Georgia’s capital city this weekend with the Tour Championship. The four-round event is the culmination of a season-long competition on the PGA Tour, as well as the tour’s three-tournament playoffs.
Masters winner Scottie Scheffler leads the standings and is the man to beat entering the Tour Championship, while reigning Tour Championship winner Patrick Cantlay won the second leg. Not only are Scheffler and Cantlay the top contenders based on their talent, but their season-long results will give them an advantage at this year’s Tour Championship. Will Zalatoris won the first event and was in third place, but he will miss the Tour Championship with the back injury that forced him to withdraw last weekend.

Before the event gets underway, here’s everything to know about the 2022 Tour Championship:
What is the Tour Championship?
The Tour Championship is the third and final event of the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup Playoffs, with the winner of the event taking home the FedEx Cup title.
Where is the Tour Championship?
Jake Knapp holds on to win Mexico Open and earn Masters spot
Tiger Woods' teenage son, Charlie, could make his PGA Tour debut next week. Here's how
The event will be held from Aug. 25-28 at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. Along with 1998, 2000 and 2002, the tournament has taken place at the course every year since 2004.
How many players compete in the Tour Championship?
Thirty players will compete in the final FedEx Cup Playoffs event.
The playoff field began with 125 players for the FedEx St. Jude Championship earlier this month. It was cut down to 70 for the BMW Championship in Delaware last weekend, and the top 29 players in the standings (minus Zalatoris) following that event will make up the field in Atlanta.
Are LIV Golf players allowed at the Tour Championship?
LIV golfers were banned from the FedEx Cup Playoffs.
Ahead of the FedEx St. Jude Championship, a federal judge in California ruled that three LIV golfers who sought a temporary restraining order would not be allowed to compete in the playoffs.
How does the Tour Championship work?
FedEx Cup points for the 30 remaining players are used to create “starting strokes” for the Tour Championship. Players at the top of the standings are given more strokes under par for the start of the event, giving them a head start on the competition.
As the leader in the FedEx Cup standings entering the event, Scheffler will start Thursday at 10 strokes under par. Here’s a full look at how many starting strokes each player will be given based on how they stack up with FedEx Cup points:
- 10 under: Scottie Scheffler
- 8 under: Patrick Cantlay
- 6 under: Xander Schauffele
- 5 under: Sam Burns
- 4 under: Cameron Smith, Rory McIlroy, Tony Finau, Sepp Straka, Sungjae Im
- 3 under: Jon Rahm, Scott Stallings, Justin Thomas, Cameron Young, Matt Fitzpatrick
- 2 under: Max Homa, Hideki Matsuyama, Jordan Speith, Joaquin Niemann, Viktor Hovland
- 1 under: Collin Morikawa, Billy Horschel, Tom Hoge, Corey Conner, Brain Harman
- Even par: K.H. Lee, J.T. Poston, Sahith Theegala, Adam Scott, Aaron Wise
How much does the Tour Championship winner earn?
Every stroke counts when there’s $75 million up for grabs.
The player who wins the Tour Championship will take home $18 million to go along with the actual FedEx Cup. The second-place finisher will earn a $6.5 million paycheck, as well. All players who finish in the top 10 will take home at least $1 million, and all 30 participants will make at least $500,000 from the event.

The PGA TOUR continues its Florida Swing at the 50th edition of the THE PLAYERS Championship in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. THE PLAYERS will be contested at TPC Sawgrass' Stadium Course from March 14-17.
Defending champion and world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler highlights the field. Past champions, including Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas and Rickie Fowler return, while new faces look to capture the coveted trophy.
The PGA TOUR uses a standardized system for determining event fields based on the current season’s Priority Ranking while also including additional exemption and qualifying categories.
Field sizes can vary by event, as can the number of event-specific exemptions. Fully exempt PGA TOUR members are guaranteed entry into all full-field events, with various conditional categories subject to periodic reshuffles based upon FedExCup Points accrued throughout the season. Categories with "reshuffle" notation indicate that a reshuffle period has occurred.
Note: An additional year of eligibility was granted to some categories because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

2024 Masters odds, field: Surprising PGA picks, predictions from top golf model that's called 10 majors
Sportsline's proven model simulated the masters 2024 10,000 times and revealed its pga golf picks for augusta national.
The 2024 Masters field has an impressive list of past champions, but it also features plenty of stars who have yet to slip on a green jacket. Rory McIlroy, Brooks Koepka and Justin Thomas have combined to win 11 majors, but none of those came at Augusta National. They'll get their next chances to do so when the first round of the Masters 2024 tees off Thursday, April 11. Of the 2024 Masters golfers, McIlroy is the only one who can complete the career grand slam with a victory.
Despite missing the cut in two of his last three Masters starts, McIlroy is a 15-2 co-favorite in the 2024 Masters odds alongside 2022 winner Scottie Scheffler. Reigning champion Jon Rahm is 19-2 in the Masters odds 2024 as he looks to become the first since Tiger Woods in 2001 and 2002 to repeat. Koepka is 19-1, while Thomas is 24-1. Before locking in any 2024 Masters picks of your own, be sure to see the 2024 Masters golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine .
SportsLine's proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June 2020. In fact, the model is up more than $9,000 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.
McClure's model predicted Jon Rahm would finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scottie Scheffler's 2022 victory.
In addition, the model included Nick Taylor in its best bets to win the 2023 RBC Canadian Open. That bet hit at 70-1, and for the entire tournament, McClure's best bets returned nearly $1,900. McClure's best bets also included Jason Day (17-1) winning outright at the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson and Rickie Fowler (14-1) finishing on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic.
This same model has also nailed a whopping 10 majors entering the weekend. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.
Now that the Masters 2024 field is taking shape, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard.
Top 2024 Masters predictions
One major surprise the model is calling for at the 2024 Masters: Rory McIlroy, a four-time major champion and one of the co-favorites, fails to complete the career grand slam and barely cracks the top five at Augusta National. After a stretch of making five straight top-10s at the Masters from 2014 to 2018, McIlroy has been inconsistent. Over his last five appearances, he has more finishes outside the top 20 (three) than inside, and he's missed two cuts, including last year. He's failed to break par in seven of his last 12 rounds at Augusta National.
McIlroy's lack of precision off the tee has been a major reason for his struggles at not just the Masters, but at all majors recently, as it's been a decade since his last major championship victory. He's ranked outside the top 100 in driving accuracy percentage the last seven seasons, with his rank of 171st last year being his worst. His inaccuracy with an iron isn't making up for his driving struggles, as he ranked just 79th in greens in regulation a year ago. Given the current flaws in McIlroy's game, but having the shortest 2024 Masters odds, he's a name to steer clear of with your 2024 Masters picks, according to the model.
Another surprise: Patrick Cantlay, a 21-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He has a much better chance to win it all than his odds imply, so he's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. Cantlay has yet to win a major and deservedly earned a reputation for struggling at major championships in the early part of his career. However, he's squashed that notion in recent appearances, as after having just four top-15s through his first 21 major starts, Cantley has done so in five of his last six majors. He was fourth on the leaderboard entering the final round of last year's Masters before a tough Sunday knocked him down to 14th.
Cantlay has played his best against the best this year on tour, placing 12th at the Sentry Tournament of Champions, 11th at Pebble Beach and fourth at the Genesis Invitational, all signature tournaments. He ranks 19th in birdie average, 22nd in scoring average, and has been nearly automatic on the greens. Cantlay is going undervalued in 2024 Masters picks according to the model, due to the rough start of his major championship career, but he's peaking as we approach Augusta National. See who else to pick here .
How to make 2024 Masters picks
The model is also targeting three other golfers with odds of 20-1 or longer to make a strong run at the green jacket. Anyone who backs these longshots could hit it big. You can only see the model's picks here .
Who will win the 2024 Masters, and which longshots will stun the golfing world? Check out the Masters 2024 odds below and then visit SportsLine to see the projected Masters leaderboard, all from the model that's nailed 10 golf majors, including last year's Masters and Open Championship .

Notably, Tiger Woods will stay out of the competition. Having pulled out of the Genesis Invitational last month, the ace golfer still seems to be in recovery.

More details on the PGA Tour 's The Players Championship 2024, including prize money and tee times, will be updated soon.
Purse progression: How The Players Championship prize money progressed over 50 years
Players Purses: How the money started good and got better over 50 years, with total purse, and winner's share in parentheses.
1974-1975: $250,000 ($50,000 for the winner)
Notable: Jack Nicklaus took home $18,500 more than Gary Player earned for winning the Masters as the PGA Tour established from the start that every effort would be made to make sure The Players would be the most lucrative professional tournament.
1976-1977, $300,000 ($60,000).
1978: $344,270 ($60,000).
1979: $437,292 ($72,000).
1980: $440,000 ($72,000).
1981: $435,620 ($72,000).
1982: $500,000 ($90,000)
Notable: The Tour celebrated moving The Players to the TPC Sawgrass Players Stadium Course with the largest bump in the first-place check in tournament history. Jerry Pate was kept in orange golf balls for a long time.
1983: $700,000 ($126,000).
1984: $800,000 ($144,000)
Notable: In just three years, the first-place check doubled for Fred Couples' victory.
1985-1986: $900,000 ($162,000).
1987: $1 million ($180,000)
Notable: The Players is now a million-dollar tournament. But other events, such as those at Doral or Las Vegas, matched or surpassed that figure. That changed in 1988 when The Players purse surpassed all other regular-season events.
1988: $1.25 million ($225,000).
1989: $1.35 million ($243,000).
1990: $1.5 million ($270,000)
Notable: The first-place check, for the first time, surpassed the total purse for the first Players in 1974.
1991: $1.6 million ($288,000).
1992: $1.8 million ($324,000).
1993-1994: $2.5 million ($450,000).
1995: $3 million ($540,000)
Notable: The total purse doubled in five years. If winner Lee Janzen had not played in any other Tour event, he would have finished 32nd on the money list.
1996-1997: $3.5 million ($630,000).
1998: $4 million ($720,000).
1999: $5 million ($900,000).
2000-2002: $6 million ($1.08 million)
Notable: It took only another five years for the purse to double again and for the first time the winner took home a cool million.
2003: $6.5 million ($1.17 million).
2004-2006: $8 million ($1.44 million).
2007: $9 million ($1.62 million)
Notable: The move to May brought about the first increase in purse in four years, matching the longest streak when it was stagnant.
2008-2013: $9.5 million ($1.71 million)
Notable: The purse stayed at $9.5 million for six years, the longest unchanged streak in the history of The Players. The depression of 2008 had a bit to do with that but no one who won during that period was starving.
2014-2015: $10 million ($1.8 million)
Notable: The purse went to eight figures for the first time but FOX Sports launched a money skirmish with the U.S. Open surpassing the Players.
2016-2017: $10.5 million ($1.89 million).
2018: $11 million ($1.89 million).
2019: $12.5 million ($2.25 million).
2021: $15 million ($2.7 million).
2022: $20 million (3.6 million)
Notable: With FOX out of the U.S. Open, The Players had returned to the top purse in golf in 2019 and doubled in seven years.
2023-2024: $25 million ($4.5 million)
Notable: The total purse is equal to the LIV Golf League, with the winner getting a half-million more. And Kevin Kisner, who finished in last place in 2023, earned only $1,250 less than Nicklaus hauled in for winning the first Players.
Nice work if you can get it.
