15 Stunning London Gardens For You To While Away The Hours In

Nothing screams ‘peace and quiet’ more than a blossoming garden, so why not take a stroll around one of our capital's finest floral havens and grab yourself some real R&R?

Samuel Hopkins

There’s nothing quite like getting away from the craziness of life in the capital than by taking a wander through one of its many gardens. And luckily for us, we’re not exactly short of them here in our lovely capital city. So, without further ado, here’s our rundown of 15 of the best London gardens for you to explore. Don’t forget to pack a book!

1. Chelsea Physic Garden, Chelsea

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Chelsea Physic Garden (@chelsea_physic_garden)

Kicking off our roundup of the best London gardens you can visit is the Chelsea Physic Garden – London’s official ‘secret garden’ which is a green oasis tucked away beside the River Thames and which holds a unique collection of 5,000 different plants.

It also holds the prestigious title of being London’s oldest botanical garden, and this year it’s marking its 350th anniversary. They’ve recently restored their glasshouses, so it’s a really great time to visit this one!

📍You’ll find the Chelsea Physic Garden at 66 Royal Hospital Road, Chelsea, London, SW3 4HS.

🚇 Nearest station is Sloane Square.

2. The Garden of St. John’s Lodge , Regent’s Park

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Orchestra for the Earth (@orchestrafortheearth)

Robert Weir Shultz classed this garden as ‘fit for meditation’ all the way back in 1889 and, if it was enough to calm the soul in the 19th century, we’re pretty sure it’ll ease our minds now. Ornamented with lots of exquisite stonework and sculptures, you could easily get lost in the beauty of this corner of Regent’s Park.

The garden features a sunken lawn with hedge borders leading up to the St. John’s Lodge itself where you can get a view of the top of the villa, and maybe a cheeky glimpse through the hedge. Lined with benches on either side, it allows you to hunker down on a sunny day with a book or for a meditative moment, just as Robert Weir Shultz intended. We for one can certainly get on board with that!

📍You’ll find The Garden of St. John’s Lodge at Regent’s Park, Chester Road, London, NW1 4NR.

🚇 Nearest station is Regent’s Park.

3. Queen Mary’s Garden, Regent’s Park

View this post on Instagram A post shared by kat | pastel curator • london (@curiouskatsees)

Another one of London’s gardens based in Regent’s Park, this one is definitely for all you flower lovers out there, as it’s home to the largest collection of roses in London – a whopping 12,000. It’s kitted out with Mediterranean Borders, a Begonia Garden and strategically-designed shrubberies — but just be careful when you’re trying to snap that perfect shot for Insta (we know you won’t be able to resist).

📍You’ll find Queen Mary’s Garden at Chester Road, London, NW1 4NR.

4. Myddelton House Gardens, Enfield

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Myddelton House Gardens (@myddeltonhousegardens)

Boasting an impressive eight acres, this beautiful garden was created in the late 19th century by Edward Augustus Bowles, one of Britain’s most famous self-taught gardeners and botanists. With a lake , a Victorian greenhouse and lots of pretty crevices, nooks and crannies to explore, this garden is well worth the trip up to the Lee Valley.

There are also a plethora of unusual plants on show here, and throughout the year, the gardens also play host to a range of events, including live music and theatre on the lawn plus seasonal guided walks .

📍You’ll find Myddelton House Gardens at Bulls Cross, Enfield, EN2 9HG.

🚇  Nearest station is Turkey Street.

5. Kew Gardens , Kew

A tower in the magnificent Kew Gardens in Barnes, one of the best picnic spots in London

Another one of our favourite London gardens is none other than the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew – officially the UK’s favourite and most Instagrammable garden in which to visit – and who are we to argue? It’s official!

This world-renowned spot is made up of over 50,000 living plants which can be discovered in a variety of different environments, ranging from the famous Arboretum to the Alpine rock garden – and it actually holds the title of being the world’s largest botanical garden. Not bad right? Pay a visit to the ten-story Chinese Pagoda, come face to face with a venus flytrap in the Temperate House or  get a head for heights up atop the vertigo-inducing Aerial Walkway. Get your tickets here .

📍You’ll find the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, Richmond, TW9 3AB.

🚇 Nearest station is Kew Gardens.

6. Dalston Eastern Curve Garden, Dalston

Beautiful plants and flowers at the Dalston Eastern Curve Garden in East London

This community garden runs along the old Eastern Curve railway line that used to link Dalston Junction with the goods yard and the North London line. Now it’s a lovely green space dotted with wooden benches and a pavilion for events such as yoga , volunteer gardening and live music . Wholesome or what?

It’s dog-friendly so you can also bring your doggos here – as long as they are on a lead – and there’s a cute cafe you can visit if you fancy a cuppa.

📍 You’ll find Dalston Eastern Curve Garden at 13 Dalston Lane, E8 3DF.

🚇 Nearest station is Dalston Junction.

7. Eltham Palace & Gardens, Eltham

Eltham Palace being basked in the sunshine in South London

Perhaps one of London’s biggest hidden gems and tucked away in the Royal Borough of Greenwich , this extravagant spot was once a Medieval palace before it became a Royal Tudor residence. Then, in the 1930’s, it was transformed by the eccentric millionaires Stephen and Virginia Courtauld into a kooky, Art Deco-style mansion.

As well as the mighty (and still standing) Mediaeval hall at this palace , y ou’ll be able to try on a whole host of period costumes, take a wander around the beautiful Rock Garden with its waterfalls and rose beds, see the purpose-built home of Mah-Jong, the Courtaulds’ beloved pet lemur, or even catch a candlelight concert here!

📍You’ll find Eltham Palace & Gardens at Court Yard, Greenwich, London, SE9 5QE.

🚇 Nearest stations are Mottingham and Eltham.

8. Syon House & Gardens , Brentford

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Syon Park - House and Gardens (@syonparkofficial)

Syon Park is one of the last great manor houses of London but it’s their expansive gardens and conservatory that will win you over. Take a stroll around the park’s gardens, arboretum, parklands and meadows to take in some of the rare collections of wildlife and plants.

They’ve filmed everything here from the likes of The Madness of King George , Gosford Park , Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story and the Gwyneth Paltrow-starring Emma . So you’ll be walking in some pretty impressive footsteps at this one!

📍You’ll find Syon House & Gardens at Syon Park, Brentford, TW8 8JF.

🚇 Nearest station is Syon Lane.

9. Kyoto Japanese Garden at Holland Park, Kensington

kyoto garden with some autumnal coloured trees above the pond

Nestled right in the heart of leafy Holland Park lies a charming, hyper-Instagrammable, oasis of calm called the Kyoto Garden. The park was a gift from the city of Kyoto, honouring the friendship between the countries of Japan and Great Britain.

Central to it all is the famous waterfall, which trickles into a pond with koi carp swimming around. But there’s plenty more to see than just this water feature, with winding cobbled pathways, traditional Japanese stone lanterns, and more. There are even some resident peacocks here, who pose for photographs to anyone who comes across their path, and you can also spot numerous other species of wildlife here too – including Eurasian jays and, if you’re lucky, grey herons.

📍You’ll find the Kyoto Japanese Garden at Holland Park, Holland Park Avenue, London, W11 4UA.

🚇 Nearest station is Holland Park.

10. Charlton House & Gardens, Greenwich

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Charlton House & Gardens (@charltonhousegreenwich)

With three walled gardens to choose from, there’s plenty to see and walk around at this free green space at Charlton House, which is one the UK’s finest examples of a Jacobean manor home and was built all the way back in the early 17th century. Expect cute courtyards, ponds and everything pretty in-between. There’s also a long list of events and tours in case you want to make a proper day out of it and, really, we can’t blame you to be honest. Don’t miss out on checking out the art exhibitions here too!

📍You’ll find Charlton House & Gardens at Charlton Road, London, SE7 8RE.

🚇 Nearest station is Charlton.

11. Culpeper Community Gardens, Islington

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Culpeper Community Garden (@culpepergarden)

Another one of the best London gardens here is Culpeper Community Gardens, a peaceful oasis set right amongst the buzz and bustle of the city, which is managed by and for the local people.

But it’s also open to the public to enjoy a gorgeous slice of greenery and a variety of plant-life right in the middle of one of London’s most popular areas.  There are ponds, paths and lots of plants here, it’s the perfect place for a leisurely stroll or a Summer picnic .

📍 1 Cloudesley Road, near Angel station, N1 0EJ

🚇 Nearest station is Angel.

12. Hill Garden & Pergola , Hampstead

An aerial shot showing the verdant green spaces of the Hampstead Hill Garden and Pergola

The Hill Garden began its life as a Victorian folly, but it has since become London’s very own fairytale location. It is a beautiful, landscaped garden which was the private garden of a now demolished manor house. Right by the pergola, it offers expansive panoramic views over the rolling green hills of Hampstead Heath, and of course, you can’t miss checking out the pergola.

It was commissioned by Lord Leverhulme, who made his fortune selling soap. One summer’s eve in 1904, he decided that his nearby mansion needed an extravagant terrace , to host garden parties and lazy summer nights. So, being filthy rich, he decided to build it. Who can blame him hey?!

📍You’ll find the Hill Garden & Pergola at Inverforth Close, North End Way, London, NW3 7EX.

🚇 Nearest stations are Hampstead and Golders Green.

13. St-Dunstan-In-The-East , City of London

View this post on Instagram A post shared by andi (@uncharted.land)

Now we absolutely love this one here at Secret London. And to be honest – who can blame us!? It’s a little slice of tranquillity right in the heart of the City of London. After being ruined by the Great Fire of London and being bombed during The Blitz, the Anglican Church wasn’t then forced to abandon it.

However, in 1967, it was then converted into a public park, and the Church’s loss became London’s gain. Trees grow through windows and vines wind themselves around walls of St Dunstan in the East, whilst palm trees make for a positively tropical addition. All in all, it’s a gorgeously green spot and the perfect place to while away a few hours and grab some R&R.

📍You’ll find St-Dunstan-In-The-East at St Dunstan’s Hill, London, EC3R 5DD.

🚇 Nearest stations are Tower Hill and Fenchurch Street.

14. Crossrail Place Roof Garden, Canary Wharf

Crossrail Place roof garden at Canary Wharf.

Taking an amble around this serene rooftop garden right in the heart of Canary Wharf is arguably the perfect way to escape the hustle and bustle of life within the working district. It’s a beautiful little spot, where funky geometric windows offer great views back over Canary Wharf. To be honest, it was expected given that the architects responsible also count the Gherkin, City Hall, and the British Museum’s swanky roof amongst their creations. The plants are just as delightful, too, encompassing trees, shrubs, and flowers from all over the globe.

📍You’ll find the Crossrail Place Roof Garden at Crossrail Place, London, E14 5AB.

🚇 Nearest station is Canary Wharf.

15. Chiswick House & Gardens, Chiswick

The magnificent Chiswick House in leafy Chiswick, West London

Rounding off this list of the best London gardens is the magnificent Chiswick House & Gardens – and you really can’t go wrong with a wander round this charming locale on a sunny day. The gardens were restored to show the original vistas, garden buildings and statues that were placed here when the gardens were originally formed back in the 18th century. Plus, there are also dog shows, exhibitions, open houses and even a music festival here every September! Winner, winner.

📍You’ll find Chiswick House & Gardens at Burlington Lane, Chiswick, London, W4 2RP.

🚇 Nearest station is Chiswick.

So there you have it, a roundup of the very best London gardens for you to while away the hours and enjoy some real peace and quiet. So take along a book, bring a pair of sunnies and kick back and relax!

The Best London Gardens: Secret (and Not so Secret) Gardens You Have to Explore

The Best London Gardens: Secret (and Not so Secret) Gardens You Have to Explore

Love This? Save and Share!

Looking for the best gardens in London? These are the gorgeous spots you shouldn’t miss.

There’s something so nice about escaping to one of London’s green spaces – particularly on those (seemingly rare) days when the sun is on full blast and even the dourest Londoner starts smiling.

While at first glance London might seem like a concrete jungle, there are actually plenty of green spaces dotted all around the city.

Now, London has plenty of parks for you to explore but sometimes you’re looking for something a little more intimate – or you just want to find a new outdoors spot.

Luckily for you, London has a wealth of gardens, large and small for you to discover. These are the best London gardens – perfect for picnics, basking in the sun and escaping from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Best Gardens in London

Sky garden .

Sky Garden

It doesn’t get much more spectacular than the Sky Garden , the highest roof garden in London.

The difficulty is knowing where to look – will it be at the many gorgeous plants or flowers, or out at the dazzling view?

I say grab a glass of prosecco from the bar and give yourself plenty of time to do both.

Kew Gardens

Kew Gardens

There’s no two ways about it: Kew Gardens is the most famous flower patch in England, and quite possibly the world.

In fact, calling in a “flower patch” is quite the understatement. Laid out over 300 acres with over 30,000 species of plants, this botanical garden in London is really something.

If you’re looking to visit the most famous London garden – this is probably your best bet .

Kyoto Garden

Kyoto Garden

I love the traffic and hustle and bustle of downtown London, but it’s not exactly a zen kind of place to do some reflection.

Luckily, London’s Kyoto Garden certainly is. Donated by the city of Kyoto in the 90s, it’s a peaceful oasis inspired by traditional Japanese gardens and one of the most romantic places in the city .

While it’s not enormous, there’s plenty to see and it’s best explored slowly – so I recommend leaving an afternoon to see it.

Chelsea Physic Garden

Chelsea Physic Garden

The Chelsea Physic Garden was established by the “Worshipful Society of Apothecaries” (has there ever been a cooler name for an organisation?) way back in 1673.

Today, it remains popular and is one of the more unique gardens to visit in London. There’s a focus on the scientific side of the plants, including their medicinal uses.

Perfect if you’re a secret (or out and proud) flower geek.

Isabella Plantation

Isabella Plantation

If there was ever a garden to inspire you to become a budding (get it?) flower enthusiast, it’s the Isabella Plantation .

Located in Richmond Park, this flower garden in London is packed full of dreamy flowers like colourful azaleas.

Perfect for inspiration for your own garden – or just as an Insta backdrop.

Queen Mary’s Garden

If it’s rose garden in London that you seek, then I present to you – Queen Mary’s Garde n in Regent’s Park.

Apparently Queen Mary (wife of King George V) really loved roses. I certainly don’t blame her – the sight of over 12,000 of them is seriously gorgeous.

In fact, there are more than 85 different types of roses in the garden. You’re sure to leave with more rose knowledge than you ever thought possible.

Secret Gardens in London

Looking to discover some hidden gems in London? Luckily, there are plenty.

Barbican Conservatory

Barbican Conservatory

Even many Londoners are surprised to hear that the Barbican Conservatory is the city’s largest conservatory after Kew Gardens.

That said, the fact that it only opens up on some Sundays does mean this tropical garden in London has a little less hype around it.

It also only adds to the intrigue if you ask me – and it’s well worth checking out.

Streatham Rookery

Inside the Old English Garden

This pretty and petite London garden is one of my favourite places to escape the city crowds. My parents always used to take me here as a child and I’m glad to say that it’s just as beautiful decades later.

The Streatham Rookery been perfectly landscaped, with impressive hedges and a beautiful pond nestled right on the edge of Streatham Common. Even better? Very few people know about this secret spot – perfect for grabbing a bit of peace and quiet.

Postman’s Park

Watts Memorial in Postman's Park

A picturesque garden north of St Paul’s Cathedral, Postman’s Park is more than just a pretty face.

My favourite part of this space is the moving ‘Memorial to Heroic Self-Sacrifice’ in the midst of it.

Here, you’ll find dozens of plaques dedicated to people who lost their lives trying to save others (it even popped up in the film Closer starring Jude Law, Julia Roberts, Natalie Portman and Clive Owen).

Not hard to see why it’s one of my favourite free gardens to visit in London.

St Dunstan in the East

St Dunstan in the East

This is a bit of a loose interpretation of ‘garden’, but it’s so unique that I couldn’t leave St Dunstan in the East off the list.

This site was once the home to a beautiful old church, however it was largely destroyed during The Blitz.

Instead of restoring it, it has been left to be slowly reclaimed by the plants and flowers around it.

The result is exceptionally beautiful and interesting. It’s a real favourite with local workers as a lunch spot, but visit outside of the peak hours and St Dunstan’s is an oasis of quiet.

Eltham Palace

Gardens Eltham Palace

Once a royal residence, Eltham Palace is today managed by English Heritage and open to all us commoners.

There’s 19 acres of beautiful gardens to enjoy. The rock garden, water pools and historic bridge are particularly unique features.

A more recent addition that’s great for kids is a play area inspired by the travels of former owners Stephen and Virginia Courtauld.

Coombe Wood, Croydon

Coombe Woods

If you ask me, Coombe Wood in Croydon (shout out to my hometown) is worthy of far more acclaim than it gets. That said, I’m not complaining about it never being overrun with crowds…

This picturesque garden is inspired by the woodlands and opened back in 1948.

It’s beautiful all year round, but it’s one of the most delightful spring gardens in London thanks to its abundance of flowers and pretty stream.

The Secret Garden in Brockwell Park

Brockwell park

If you’ve ever seen the movie The Secret Garden and dreamed of finding your own secluded spot, have I got a treat for you.

Nestled in Brockwell Park , you’ll find a beautiful old walled English garden in this south London park .

How this gem has remained hidden, I don’t know – but do check it out before the secret gets out!

The garden was once the kitchen garden for the (now demolished) mansion on site. Today, however, it’s all about the looks – with roses and other plants galore.

Hampstead Hill Garden + Pergola

Hill Garden & Pergola

One London garden that’s well known to locals but strangely hidden from the pages of most guidebooks is Hampstead Hill Garden and Pergola .

The charming, overgrown pergola overlooks West Heath.

In spring, wisteria snakes its way around the pergola’s columns, making it even more beautiful.

As well as enjoying the relaxing vibes and beautiful plants, this garden also gets a lovely view out over London.

Rembrandt Gardens in Little Venice

Located in the heart of charming Little Venice, the Rembrandt Gardens are a lovely place for a stroll or a lazy picnic (sounds good to me.)

The name of the gardens comes from the fact that tulips were donated to the garden by the City of Amsterdam in the 1970s.

As well as the tulips, there’s also plenty of inviting green lawn as well as other plants and flowers to enjoy.

Queen Elizabeth Hall Roof Garden

A garden that is free and on a rooftop? Yep, that’s what’s on offer at the Queen Elizabeth Hall Roof Garden at the Southbank centre.

This a beautiful spot to enjoy a drink, admire the flowers and take in the view of London.

Plus, the garden is maintained by a group of volunteers recovering from issues like homelessness and mental illness – so it’s a place that’s more than worthy of your support.

Myddelton House Gardens

Beautiful Myddelton House was once home to Edward Bowles, who was a definite gardening addict.

He spent years teaching himself everything he could about botany and landscaping. He then put his knowledge to work and designed the amazing eight-acre gardens at Myddelton House.

To this day they are one of the most popular gardens in London and well worth a visit.

Phoenix Gardens

It’s not the grandest of the gardens in London, but it is certainly one of the most loved.

Even in the big city, Phoenix Garden proves that everyone loves a community garden.

This modest sized garden is nestled between Soho and Covent Garden. It gives the area a much-needed injection of green space, and community spirit.

It’s a not-for-profit that relies on donations, so if you have any spare pounds – consider handing them over.

Embankment Gardens

The strip of lawns and lush flower beds along Embankment are on the radar of almost anyone trying to sneak a bit of sunshine on a lunch break in that part of town but are still ones to have in mind if you’re looking for a little green space in central.

They’re easy to get to from pretty much anywhere in London’s centre and some of the flowers on display are truly beautiful. Throw in some curious statues and fountains and you’re on for a winner.

Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens

Straddling the line between park and gardens comes the intriguing Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens (it is in the title after all). They’re a sprawling run of lawns and more secluded spots where you can discover some curious flora among the flowerbeds.

What’s more curious though is the history of this space. The Vauxhall pleasure gardens were once a place of extreme debauchery, where Victorians would go to visit prostitutes, watch lewd theatre and get into fights.

None of that goes on any more. These days the gardens are really rather peaceful. They even have a city farm. Can you get more wholesome than that?

Gardens in London: Palaces + Stately Homes

London’s wealthy elite have historically had some pretty amazing gardens – and nowadays, many are open to the public (but only if we’re on our best behaviour).

Hampton Court Palace Gardens

Hampton Court Gardens

Henry VIII may not have been a stellar husband, but he did have great choice in gardens. You can see for yourself at his old stomping ground, Hampton Court .

Here, you’ll find over 60 acres of perfectly manicured garden. It’s all very aristocratic, with perfectly polished hedgerows and imposing statues.

It’s not all serious though – there’s also a huge maze, which is great fun for kids (and kids-at-heart).

Fenton House

Not far from Hampstead Heath, Fenton House was built by a wealthy merchant back in the 1600s.

As was all the rage back then (and to this day), the house is surrounded by a gorgeous garden.

Not only is it beautiful, but it’s also quite practical. There’s a huge apple orchard as well as a bee habitat – you can even buy the honey from the gift shop.

Ham House Garden

Ham House Gardens

If you were fabulously wealthy in the 17th century then an impressive house and spectacular garden were definite non-negotiables.

To have a peek at how the other half lived, you can pay a visit to Ham House with its gorgeous garden.

Flowers abound in this garden – if you want to know more, you can even join a free tour of them.

St. John’s Lodge Gardens

Hidden in plain sight just off the Inner Circle in Regent’s Park the St John’s Lodge Gardens date back over 200 years. They’ve served as gardens to a private residence that has in its time been a hospital for officers wounded in the first world war and the HQ of the Institute of Archaeology.

The mansion is now a private residence again but you can still go and visit the gardens. They are home to a Grade II listed bronze statue of a young woman holding a goat, a donation from the National Council for Animal Welfare in the thirties.

The statue is in honour of Gertrude Baillie Weaver, a suffragette who co-founded the aforementioned National Council. It is inscribed “To all the Protectors of the Defenceless”.

Kensington Palace Gardens

If you’re intrigued by the young royals (let’s admit it, aren’t we all?) then you should definitely swing by the Kensington Palace Gardens .

Not only is the palace impressive, but it’s surrounded by one of the most beautiful gardens in London. The summer garden is especially impressive and colourful.

Best of all there is no entrance fee if you don’t mind skipping the house, making it one of the best free gardens in London.

Buckingham Palace Gardens

What could be more British than checking out the garden at Buckingham Palace ? You can even stop in at the tea shop afterwards.

As you’d expect from the home of the royal family, the garden is gobsmackingly pretty. In particular, it’s home to one of the most beautiful rose gardens in London.

Just note that it’s only open in summer ; the rest of the time it’s just for Queen Liz and her corgis.

Syon House Gardens

If you arrive at Syon House and Gardens and feel a sense of deja vu – don’t be alarmed. You’ve probably just seen it in a show like Downton Abbey, Killing Eve or Poirot.

The spectacular house and garden are quite the favourite of film-makers.

The gardens here are really something, as you’d expect from Greater London’s last remaining ducal estate. Prepare to be impressed (and really jealous.)

Fulham Palace Gardens

Fulham Palace knot garden | credit: Matthew Bruce

Once the home of the Bishops of London, Fulham Palace Gardens is today open for everyone to enjoy and admire.

It’s a combination of beautiful, flower-filled “pleasure gardens” as well as “kitchen gardens” where herbs and spices would have been grown.

Dating back from the 17th century but with modern changes, it’s one of the most historic and beautiful gardens in London. Best of all, entrance is free.

Tips for Visiting London’s Gardens

  • A number of these gardens are managed by the National Trust or English Heritage . Members are entitled to free entry. Overseas visitors can also sign up for a temporary overseas membership.
  • For those gardens with an entry fee, it is usually cheaper (and easier) to book your tickets online. It avoids the crowds and usually saves a few pounds.
  • Don’t be afraid to join a garden tour which are on offer at many of these sites. They’re a fun walk and you can pick up some tips to apply to your own garden (or houseplant).

31 Best Gardens in London: Famous, Quirky, Secret & More

Sharing is caring!

London is, without doubt, one of the world’s most exciting capitals – from nightlife and a vibrant restaurant scene to art, sporting events and exceptional shopping, it’s truly a place that’s got it all.

However, sometimes hectic city life can all get a bit too much, at which point you might appreciate somewhere to escape for a moment of peace. Thankfully, London is blessed with a large number of gardens, and here’s 31 of our favourites.

Must-See Gardens

Some of the gardens in London are world-famous and simply can’t be missed while others are also essential stops on any garden lover’s itinerary due to their unique nature. Here are our recommendations for must-see gardens in London.

1. Kew Gardens

Kew Gardens

  • Address: Kew, Richmond, London, TW9 3AE

Founded in 1840 and housing the largest botanical and mycological collection in the world, Kew Gardens is one of London’s major attractions and should top the list of places to go for anyone with a love for all things that grow.

Highlights include a treetop walkway, the Alpine House, the Palm house and one of the largest compost heaps in Europe, which can be seen from a specially-constructed viewing platform. Also not to be missed is The Hive, a multi-sensory exhibit about the lives of bees.

2. Sky Garden

Sky Garden

  • Address: 1, Sky Garden Walk, London EC3M 8AF

The highest public garden in London provides a lush green haven far above the streets below and also boasts an observation deck and open-air terrace with sublime views of the capital’s skyline.

The plants are mostly drought-resistant varieties from the Mediterranean and South Africa, and the range of species ensures that something is always in bloom.

The Sky Garden also contains two restaurants and two bars, making it a spectacular location for a drink or a bite to eat. Entry is free, but places are limited, so tickets should be booked ahead online.

3. Kyoto Garden

Kyoto Garden

A gift from the Japanese city of Kyoto that was opened in 1991 in honour of the longstanding friendship between Japan and the UK, the Kyoto Garden is one of the most beautiful, tranquil spots in London.

The garden was designed by a famous Japanese landscape artist and contains traditional Japanese elements such as tiered waterfalls, a pond filled with koi and Japanese maple trees.

The garden is located in Holland Park. Entry is free, but the park closes 30 minutes before dusk.

Palace and Stately Home Gardens

As the capital of England and the United Kingdom, London is home to a wide range of royal palaces and stately homes, many of which have outstanding gardens that can be visited.

The church and gardens also have other literary connections. The poet Percy Bysshe Shelley and the future Mary Shelley, author of Frankenstein, held secret meetings at the tomb of Mary’s mother, the writer Mary Wollstonecraft, who was buried in the cemetery.

1. Garden Day Trip to Sissinghurst

I have to start my list of garden day trips from London with Sissinghurst Castle Garden in Kent. Created by writer Vita Sackville-West and her husband Harold Nicolson, this Grade I-listed creation is considered one of the best gardens in England.

Sissinghurst Castle Garden is renowned for its seasonal blooms, from the manicured gardens around the house to the wild bluebell woods on the periphery. It’s one of my favorite spring gardens in the UK .

But it’s great at other times of year, too. The Rose Garden comes to life in summer and the South Cottage Garden is beautiful in autumn.

Beyond those places, features like the White Garden, Herb Garden, and Purple Border are all delights to see.

The Formal Gardens surround Blenheim Palace, and they’re worth a special trip. They feature 150 acres (61 hectares) of Water Terraces, the Italian Garden, the Secret Garden, the Churchill Memorial Garden, and the Rose Garden.

If this sounds like your kind of day out, you can book an entry ticket for the palace and gardens here.

The Spa Hotel , Royal Tunbridge Wells

Garden set within 81ha (200 acres) of woodland and parkland in Haywards Heath, West Sussex with magnificent views across the Ouse Valley viaduct. The garden has distinct ‘rooms’, each with its own unique style and character. Subtropical Round Dell, the Rose Garden, Italian Garden and Paradise Walk. Lunch included today.

Two influential gardens today! Sissinghurst, loved for its balance and harmony, garden rooms and inspired planting combinations; the result of the partnership between Vita Sackville-West and Sir Harold Nicolson. Cimb the tower for a fabulous view, and peep into Vita’s writing room. Explore each compartment of the garden, walk down to the Moat, herb garden and through to the new Delos Garden, a landscape of ruined stone fragments and Mediterranean plants, inspired by their visits to the Greek island. This garden has been re-created by Dan Pearson and opened in 2021 . Travel on to Christopher Lloyd’s Great Dixter, overwhelming and boisterous, and densely packed with plants. Now under the carefull stewardship of Fergus Garrett, who will give us his guided tour. Travel on to Tunbridge Wells, historic Spa town in Kent. Check in to Spa Hotel for the next four nights. Dinner is included this evening.

Travel into Sussex today to Nymans, originally the home of Ludwig Messel who bought the Estate in the Sussex High Weald in the 1890 to make a dream family home. Inspired by the magnificent wooded surroundings, he created a garden with plants collected from around the world. The house was partially destroyed by fire in 1947. The enclosed ruined Gothic styled Great Hall has recently been transformed into a small garden that includes many plants introduced to western horticulture by the Messel family and their gardeners, all grown in giant planters and pots. Lunch is included at Nymans before we travel back to Tunbridge Wells. Free afternoon.

We are heading to Winchester today with a visit to Wakehurst, the wild botanic garden managed by Kew Gardens. It’s home to the Millenium Seed Bank, the world’s largest store of seeds from wild plant species. In this ancient and beautiful landscape in the Sussex High Weald this diverse collection of plants from Britain and around the globe thrives within a tapestry of gardens, woodlands, meadows and wetlands. Knepp Estate is next, a brand new “rewilding” project. Isabella Tree and Charlie Burrell have brought a failing farm back from financial ruin and in the process created habitat for wildlife. It’s a biodiverse Wilderness Area in the Low Weald of Sussex, one of the most exciting wildlife conservation projects in the UK, and indeed in Europe, bringing back nature; hope for the future. Beautiful and inspiring! Travel on through Sussex and Surrey into Hampshire to our hotel in Winchester for the next four nights.

The Winchester Hotel & Spa , Winchester

We are travelling into the picturesque South Downs today to Uppark, built in 1690 with gardens designed by Humphrey Repton. First is a guided tour of the gardens, then lunch in the old Orangery. Afternoon tour through the State rooms of the house, filled with treasures. On our way back to Winchester we will stop at the ancient market town of Petersfield.

Mottisfont is highly regarded as one of the world’s finest rose gardens. The walled garden is home to the National Collection of pre-1900 old garden roses, which reach their peak in early summer. Lunch inlcuded today. These roses tend to flower just once a year, an extraordinary sight. Created by emminent rosarian, Graham Stuart Thomas in 1970, who selected old varieties that may otherwise have become extinct. Travel back to Winchester with the afternoon free. Option to attend Evensong in the exquisite Winchester Cathedral this evening.

Meet head Gardener, Matt Reese this morning at Malverleys, a private garden that has captured world interest and acclaim, thanks to his skill and dedication. Exquisite long borders, abundant Terrace Garden, shady Stumpery and prolific flower meadow; it’s a triumph! Travel on to Richmond and our Petersham Hotel.

Petersham Hotel , Richmond

Wisley, showpiece of the RHS with an impressive suite of gardens. Glasshouse with gardens designed by Tom Stuart-Smith and Piet Oudolf’s new perennial borders. The afternoon is free to either relax or go exploring in Richmond. Farewell dinner to share highlights and bid farewell as we head home or travel further.

Our tour ends at breakfast this morning. Check out of the hotel at your own convenience.

Dear Garden Enthusiast,

Welcome to COOPERSMITH'S, North America's oldest and most trusted international garden and stately-home tour company, now in our 40th year of crafting One-of-a-Kind Tours® for the discerning traveler.

Over the years, people have asked me, “What made you decide to go into the tour business?” My answer, simply put, is that travel has been in my blood for as long as I can remember. Having grown up in New Jersey, some of my fondest childhood memories were the car trips our family took to places like Niagara Falls, Smokey Mountains, and Williamsburg. While in high school, I savored week-long bicycle tours in Nova Scotia and Martha’s Vineyard.

Later, while attending the University of California, Berkeley, I hitchhiked annually between West and East coasts. Upon graduating, I set out for Europe, where I thumbed my way around the Continent for six months before settling in London. In the ensuing three years, I researched and wrote a guide book for like-minded travelers ( Rule of Thumb: A Hitchhiker’s Handbook , Simon & Schuster, 1973).

Back in Berkeley, where I supported my travel habit by working for over ten years as a landscape gardener, contractor, and garden designer, I co-founded A Taste of Britain, later to be renamed COOPERSMITH'S One-of-a-Kind Tours®. My passion was, and still is, crafting unique, small-group, upscale garden and manor-house tours that I, myself, would feel comfortable being part of.

The following elements have always formed the foundation for those tours:

World-class tour leaders, with a minimum of ten years' experience in the field

Exceptional gardens, featuring private tours by owners and head gardeners

Small groups: as few as six and never more than 20 participants

Relaxed pace: on average, one visit in the morning, and one in the afternoon

Limited time on the motorcoach, with plenty of extra seats

In-depth focus on one or two regions of one country

Four-to-seven-nights in atmospheric country inns and manor-house hotels

Gourmet meals, often locally-sourced

Now, four decades later, we’re still going strong. Our tours typically fill up 12 to 18 months in advance. We have dozens of clients who travel with us on a regular basis, some up to two or even three times a year. I love what one of our clients once wrote on his feedback form: "Going on a COOPERSMITH'S tour," he said, "is like taking part in a traveling house party, focusing on beautiful homes and gardens, with Jeeves doing all the work!"

When people go on a COOPERSMITH'S tour, odds are they’ll be signing up for another one soon - sometimes even before finishing the one they’re on! Come join us in 2024 and help us celebrate our forty years in the business. And see for yourself what makes our tours truly One-of-a-Kind®!

Happy travels,

"A company that specializes in small groups [where members] are often taken to private gardens rarely seen..." — The New York Times

"My wife recently had the good fortune to meet and speak with [famous English horticulturalist] Penelope Hobhouse, who recommended your garden tour as one of the two best in Europe..." — Collier Espy, Jr., Dothan, Alabama

Entering the Hyde Park Garden, guests will be transported to a secluded, quintessentially British garden, situated in the Royal Park itself.
