Review: kraftwerk at tsb arena, wellington, 29 november 2023.

Review - It has been 14 years since German electronic music pioneers Kraftwerk last played in New Zealand, and since then the band's long-term multimedia project exploring the synthesis between humanity and technology has grown further congruous.

In an age where large language models like ChatGPT present an approximation of human thought and speech to boost productivity, Kraftwerk's man-machine feels very present.

They're visiting on the busiest week for live music in Wellington that I can remember, but the TSB Arena is still packed and the crowd are friendly, social and excited for the show in that slightly nervous sort of way you get with beloved nostalgia acts.

The show begins. At the front of the stage, each standing behind a lit-up plinth, are four German men in Tron suits. They are largely indistinguishable from each other, which is deliberate - the band's image was always about the collective; each individual subsumed into the whole. The music too is a perfect sum of its parts; sequenced electronic music with simple melodies that sit behind minimal and modernist lyrics.

Of the four current members of Kraftwerk - Ralf Hütter, Fritz Hilpert, Henning Schmitz, and Falk Grieffenhagen - Ralf is the sole original member, and the only one who has a microphone.

Their show opens with a pair of songs from the Computer World album: 'Numbers' and 'Computer World'. Ralf's voice is older, there's a vulnerability present as he chants the technocratic refrain of "Interpol and Deutsche Bank… FBI and Scotland Yard", imbibing these institutions with a surveillant resonance that could not have been imagined in 1982. The largely impressive visuals are at their best here - numbers drip down the walls Matrix-style, consuming the musicians beneath a stream of data.

People were starting to dance by the time the slinky synth line of 'The Man-Machine' appeared.

Later, in 'Autobahn', Ralf,'s voice presented itself briefly raw, without filter. Throughout the show the occasional minor mistake gave a human note to the proceedings as we are reminded that these are human musicians working in their electronic garden.

A highlight was 'Radioactive', a reminder of the potential for nuclear destruction. "Chernobyl, Harrisburg, Sellafield, Fukushima" pulsed on the screen, as the bass put a dent into our bodies.

My favourite of the night was 'Trans Europe Express', intoxicating with its drive and sense of cool; a nostalgia for a future that we never got (a network of passenger railway lines!), the bassline chugging with the train engine, intimate and elegiac; endless, endless.

Then into 'The Robots', the closest thing to a pop song tonight. By now the aisles are full of dancers, some dancing with their phones held aloft in a perfect synthetic symbiosis. 'Musique Non Stop' is the closer before a polite ritual as each member shuffles off the stage one by one. Last to leave is Ralf Hütter, and the loudest applause of the night is given to celebrate this pioneer, this conceptual wizard. It was a special night with music that left an imprint.

Kraftwerk announce 2023 Australia and New Zealand tour, headline Meredith Music Festival

It’s the German electronic music pioneers’ first trip in 10 years

Kraftwerk

Kraftwerk , the fathers of electronic pop music, will make their return to Australia and New Zealand in November. In addition, the band will make its way to rural Victoria to headline the beloved Meredith Music Festival .

The tour marks the first time since May 2013 that the current line-up of Ralf Hütter, Henning Schmitz, Falk Grieffenhagen and Georg Bongartz have made the trip.

Frontier Members can access the pre-sale on Monday, July 17, at 11am local time. The general sale begins on Wednesday, July 19, at 10am local time. The Meredith Music Festival ballot is open now.

Hütter and the now deceased Florian Scneider founded Kraftwerk in 1970, in Dusseldorf. Their groundbreaking use of synthesisers changed the face of pop music and have left an almost unquantifiable legacy over 11 studio albums, including its seminal works ‘Autobahn’ (1974), ‘Trans Europa Express’(1977), ‘Die Mensch-Machine’ (1978) and ‘Computerwelt’ (1981).

In particular, the band’s robotic funk was adopted by early hip hop culture in the breakdancing and DJ scenes, notably on ‘Planet Rock’ by Afrika Bambaataa and the Soulsonic Force. The group has been sampled by a vast array of artists including New Order on ‘Blue Monday’ to Miley Cyrus, Dr. Dre, Coldplay and Timbaland.

Arts & entertainment, design & style, travel & leisure, search concrete playground, electro trailblazers kraftwerk have just announced a huge 2023 australian and new zealand tour.

Ahead of their time when they started making tunes in 1970, the German band is bringing its electronic music computer animations and performance art Down Under.

Electro Trailblazers Kraftwerk Have Just Announced a Huge 2023 Australian and New Zealand Tour

Some bands are so influential, so pioneering and so ahead of their time that they change the course of music history. Electro trailblazers Kraftwerk are one such group. Forming in  Düsseldorf in 1970, they quickly segued from krautrock to diving into the electronic scene — and imagining the future, including experimenting with robotics, in the process. The song 'Computer Love'? Back in the 80s, it foresaw internet dating.

Unsurprisingly, Kraftwerk have left their mark on everything from their chosen genre and techno to synth pop and hip hop since.  Also, more than five decades later, the German outfit is still touring.  Kraftwerk's live shows are an experience, combining the band's electronic music computer animations and performance art. Take note, audiences Down Under, because the group is heading to Australia and New Zealand in November and December.

The multi-media project founded by Ralf Huetter and Florian Schneider, and that aims to create "gesamtkunstwerk — a total work of art" — in each gig, will play seven shows in total across both countries. The 2023 tour starts in Wellington on Wednesday, November 29. From there, Kraftwerk will take to the stage in Auckland, Brisbane , Sydney , Melbourne and Adelaide, then end their trip in Perth on Friday, December 15.

Expect synthetic voices and computerised rhythms aplenty — it is what Kraftwerk's music is known for, and were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame for — plus a visual show that ponders man and machine to match.

Since starting their retrospective gigs at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 2012, they've hit up everywhere from London's Tate Modern and Bilbao's Guggenheim Museum to Tokyo's Akasaka Blitz and Los Angeles' Walt Disney Concert Hall.

Bringing together electronic music computer animations and performance art, Kraftwerk concerts are a true “Gesamtkunstwerk – a total work of art.”

The multi-media project Kraftwerk was started in 1970 by Ralf Huetter and Florian Schneider. They set up their electronic Kling Klang Studio in Duesseldorf, Germany, where they conceived and produced all Kraftwerk albums.

By the mid 1970’s Kraftwerk had achieved international recognition for their revolutionary electronic‚ soundscapes’ and their musical experimentation with robotics and other technical innovations. With their visions of the future, Kraftwerk created the soundtrack for the digital age of the 21st century.

Their compositions, using innovative techniques, synthetic voices and computerised rhythms, have had a major international influence across an entire range of music genres: from electro to hip hop, from techno to synth pop.

In their live performances, Kraftwerk founder Ralf Huetter and his team illustrate the belief in the respective contributions of both man and machine.

Starting with the retrospective of their catalogue at the Museum of Modern Art [MOMA] in New York in 2012, in recent years Kraftwerk have returned full circle back to their origins within the Düsseldorf art scene of the late Sixties.

The 3-D concert series at MoMA was followed by further presentations at Tate Modern Turbine Hall (London), Akasaka Blitz (Tokyo) Opera House (Sydney), Walt Disney Concert Hall (Los Angeles), Fondation Louis Vuitton (Paris), Neue National Galerie (Berlin) and Guggenheim Museum (Bilbao).

In 2014 Ralf Huetter and his former partner were honoured with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. And in in October 2021 Kraftwerk were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.

Tickets go on sale Wednesday 19 July (10am local time) via frontiertouring.com/kraftwerk . Sign up to get early access via the Frontier Members Pre-sale, which begins Monday 17 July (11am local time) – see website for further info.

‘It Just Felt Otherworldly’: Why Kraftwerk Are One of the Most Influential Artists in the History of Music

The electronic music pioneers will tour australia and new zealand in november and december.

Kraftwerk

Led by Florian Schneider and Ralf Hütter, electronic music pioneers Kraftwerk emerged out of Düsseldorf in the early ’70s, soon to become a massive influence on music worldwide.

They were trailblazers and innovators, expanding the boundaries of music and with that the ears of many devoted listeners. David Bowie was an early fan: his Berlin-era albums were heavily influenced by Kraftwerk, even going so far as to reference them on the track “V-2 Schneider” from his classic 1978 album Heroes .

As time went on and new heroes rose to acclaim, the likes of Gary Numan, Depeche Mode, Human League, Daft Punk, and Kanye West all hailed Kraftwerk, who are also one of the most sampled bands of all time. Artists as disparate as Coldplay, Dr. Dre, De La Soul, Lil Wayne, Miley Cyrus, My Morning Jacket, LCD Soundsystem, and Afrika Bambaataa have taken their songs to greater heights with Kraftwerk samples.

The Chemical Brothers – themselves touring Australia in March 2024 and who have consistently featured alongside Kraftwerk on festivals lineups in recent years – sampled Kraftwerk’s 1975 track “Ohm Sweet Ohm” in one of their most classic songs “Leave Home”, which featured on their 1995 album, Exit Planet Dust .

Florian Schneider died in April 2020 from cancer at the age of 73. He left Kraftwerk in 2008, with Hütter steering the ship ever since with a cast of new members who currently include Henning Schmitz, Falk Grieffenhagen, and Georg Bongartz.

“It takes all kinds of different mental states, from patience, to anger to a big smile when everything is functioning,” Hütter told The Guardian in 2009 of Kraftwerk’s ongoing journey, which includes a 2021 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

“But we chose to continue working, and follow the idea of the Man-Machine,” he continued, citing the group’s influential 1978 album. “And for us, it’s still working positively.”

Kraftwerk have also had a huge impact on Australian EDM artists. Paul Mac was effusive about their influence in a 2020 interview with Andrew Ford on ABC Radio National’s The Music Show .

“They were just game changers personally for me,” he said, “because up until that point – like I’m the youngest of seven – all the music in our house was a lot of prog rock, like Yes, and bands like that. So I suppose up until that point, my concept of what a good musician was that you were virtuosic, and the faster you could play, the better you were.

“And then there were a couple of bands and Kraftwerk was definitely one of them. I started with Computer World . It was just mind boggling, the sound world, the concept, the imagery, the Man-Machine idea was just like, wow! It was 100% electronic and I was getting into that.

“To a lot of people growing up on it, it was just such a weird language that you didn’t hear in the blues or blues-based pop. It just felt otherworldly. I think their choice of notes and the economy with which they used them just sounded fresh. It didn’t sound like anything else.

“It was all encompassing – the artwork, the live show. It was kind of taking this idea – the Man-Machine – to the nth degree, which was kind of radical at the time. I suppose the other thing to think of with electronic music was it was often deemed to be inauthentic and soulless and all of that in the early days because it was made by machinery and not by humans. But I think that apart from the radicalness of it they also just had a really good sense of humour with it.”

Tom Ellard of pioneering Australian electronic outfit Severed Heads recalled seeing Kraftwerk perform on their first tour here back in 1981.

“It was wonderful,” he said on his Nilamax.com website in 2013. “They brought their whole opera stage with them; all those green/yellow Wagnerian boxes and knobs and neon tubes. They seemed to enjoy their show as much as their personas allowed – even daring to tap their toes – and were just then at the peak of their musical importance.

“It was so vital in the early ’80s Australia to have this approval from on high for music that was from a different planet to AC/DC. We were empowered by it.”

Julian Hamilton from The Presets was introduced to Kraftwerk through a family friend in the early ‘80s. Many years later in 2003, The Presets were on the same Big Day Out bill and Hamilton spent the national jaunt attempting to go full fanboy.

“I carried this copy of Autobahn (1974) around with me hoping to get it autographed, yet each time I approached them I was waved off by a scary looking German bouncer type who shook his head and simply said in a deep voice, ‘later,’” he told The Guardian in 2021.

“I’d all but given up by the time we’d reached the final stop in Perth. I was walking through the backstage area when a white Tarago suddenly pulled up in front of me, the door opened and out stepped bloody Ralf and Florian. The only thing standing between them and their band room was this young idiot holding their LP and a Sharpie.

“They must have figured it was easier to simply sign and move along – which they begrudgingly did, and it sits on my studio wall to this day.”

So, look both sides of your seat when you catch Kraftwerk on their Australia/NZ tour. You never know who might be sitting beside you.
