Ready to Go? These Are the 7 Best Responsible Travel Websites

responsible travel website

The start of the year (hello 2020) always has us browsing for possible trips and places to go. In the ocean of information we call The Internet it’s quite tough to find the right and responsible travel websites. Especially when the two biggest travel booking platforms worldwide, booking.com and airbnb.com, are still not facilitating sustainable accommodations. Sure, you can find ‘sustainable stays’ on these platforms. However, these accommodations haven’t always been checked on real key eco-qualities that actually make a difference. If, by any chance, someone from these two platforms is reading this; please work on your sustainability values. As a leading booking platform, your reach is incredibly big and you have a dominant role in the travel industry. Invest money in sustainability, set clear sustainable criteria and let’s focus on more eco-stays and the development of sustainable accommodations.

But before my rant goes on and on, there are definitely great responsible travel websites out there that really stimulate sustainable tourism and eco-friendly ways of travelling. They will ensure that your next activity or trip is local, meaningful, socially conscious and fun. But where to start? Don’t worry, we got you covered. In this article, we will share the 7 best responsible travel websites to book your next trip with.

1. I Like Local

I Like Local

I Like Local

Founded in 2014 by Dutch entrepreneur Sanne Meijboom, I Like Local is an online platform that connects locals and tourists. Through the platform, local people across Asia and Africa, can offer personal and shared activities, receive 100% of the money and directly benefit from tourism in their country. I Like Local offers a wide variety of activities such as a homestay, farm stay, food experience (like cooking), art & culture (which also includes crafts) and much more.

As explained by Sanne: ‘’The main reason why I started this whole concept was that I was a really avid traveller and I was also very interested in different cultures. I would always try to find out more about how people are living and what their lives look like.

During my own travels, I realized that my favourite moments were the ones with local people. Most of the time these were spontaneous moments, but they were the most memorable. At the same time, I realized that locals are usually not the ones that are benefiting from tourism that is coming into the country’’.

2. Better Places

Better Places

Better Places

When we travel, we mostly look for local tips, local spots and local places the go. We often say that the best and most real encounters are the ones with local people. How about you let local experts design your trip?

Better Places is a socially conscious, 100% tailor-made booking platform that connects travellers directly with one of the local travel experts all around the world. Together, the traveller and local travel expert design the individual travel experience. It’s all about meaningful, and sustainable trips that have a positive impact. These local travel experts can perfectly advise you on the unique and special places to go.

3. Book Different

Book different

Book different

Booking platform and eco-travel company, Book different offers over 2 million sustainable accommodations all over the world, from boutique hotels, urban jungle hotels, eco-tree houses and much more. With the website, you can find out the most responsible and best choice on where to stay.

Furthermore, you can also read about other people’s reviews, and how much kg co2 your night will cost. Bookdifferent.com ranks each accommodation using 4 key factors: sustainable management, fair & local practices, respecting the local culture and how environmentally friendly they work.

For example a night at the relatively new hotel Jakarta in Amsterdam gets graded a 9 by 4439 other travellers and will cost 21.9 kg co2.

4. Green Key

Green Key is an award-winning, online database managed by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) that provides an eco-label to accommodations, tours, campsites & holiday parks, conference centres and other travel companies.

They have already awarded well over 2600 places in nearly 60 countries with the eco-label. The goal of Green Key is to increase the use of sustainable methods and environmentally friendly methods in tourism but also the hospitality industry. Next, they want to raise awareness and create responsible behaviour. Furthermore, they want to also encourage accommodations to reduce the use of resources by providing technological improvements.

5. Duara Travels

Duara Travels

Duara Travels

A few weeks ago we shared our blog What you can do to ensure your travel money stays local . In this blog, I talk how only 5% of every dollar spend by a tourist stays with the local people and their communities. This number is shockingly low, but sadly nothing new.

However, there are great initiatives such as Duara Travels that try to bring a change in this. They empower local people and small community businesses through the promotion of village home-stays in remote parts of Africa and Asia.

6. Responsible Travel

Responsible Travel is a leading organization in ecotourism and eco-friendly travel since 2001. They offer over 5,000 adventures to destinations across the world. Kayaking, cycling, hiking, ethical wildlife encounters and much more, they have it all.

They make sure that your travel money goes directly to the local communities and small business owners. Responsible travel always works with a great giving back program such as Trip for a Trip , that focuses on local NGO’s and change-makers helping disadvantaged kids going on an inspiring trip.

7. Backstreet Academy

Backstreet Academy

Backstreet Academy

‘‘Do good as you travel’’ is the mantra of Backstreet Academy . Backstreet Academy is a social enterprise all about meaningful hand-crafted experiences in the travel space of Asia. They help these local hosts with direct access to the tourism market, ensuring that the benefits and money will also end up with them.

On the Backstreet Academy website, they connect travellers to local hosts with a particular set of skills, that is related to their indigenous heritage. We are proud new ambassadors of Backstreet Academy platform and are looking forward to taking the unique and small tours once we are in Asia.

Responsible Travel review

Responsible travel aims to offer holidays that enrich the lives of the locals, help the environment, and satisfy the traveler..

Top Ten Reviews Verdict

Responsible Travel not only offers eco-friendly holidays but also helps fund real change in the travel industry, while also helping local communities. We love it.

Why you can trust Top Ten Reviews Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing products and services so you can choose the best for you. Find out more about how we test .

Responsible Travel has a name that immediately makes it stand out from the other travel sites. This, its founder says, was done intentionally to challenge the holiday industry and to act like a Trojan horse, inspiring change from within. The result is a holiday booking platform that gets you the dream holiday you've always wanted only without the guilt. The company even started the World Responsible Tourism Awards back in 2004, aiming to inspire change in tourism.

Sure, you still have to get a flight in most cases, but the way your trip impacts the local community is taken into account. In fact Responsible Travel aims to help the community with its holidays. On top of that it runs a Trip for Trip scheme which puts profits into helping take children out on day trips for new experiences. It's one of the best online travel sites you can use, and one of the few that puts sustainability at the heart of what it offers.

Responsible Travel offers a wide range of vacations

Responsible Travel: What you get

Responsible Travel offers over 6,000 responsible holidays from 400 providers worldwide, making it ones of the largest green travel companies. It is also an ABTA member meaning your investments are protected so you can be sure you'll get your money back should there be any cancellations. Something like Expedia has more options, but that's a far larger and less responsible operator.

Each holiday is screened for its environmental compliance with a view to help grassroot initiatives and local providers. It was responsible for publishing the first carbon audits of holidays and tries to avoid flights where possible. The company also works to stop orphanage tourism, elephant rides, orca shows and doesn't offer any zoo related trips at all.

Since 2019 the site has been publishing its own travel guides and now features over 650, all of which aim to help educate travelers on how they can have the best holiday while making the right impact.

  • Go to Responsible Travel direct

Responsible Travel cuts out certain types of irresponsible travel

Responsible Travel: Website and user experience

The Responsible Travel website is super minimal, clear and easy to use. Right from the homepage you're met with big, inviting imagery. Across the top are options to search by Destination, Holiday Type, Last Minute, Offers or via the self-published Guides. If you go by location you're met with a guide to the area including maps, local history and community information as well as the best times to go, weather guides and must see sights.

This all makes it a decent option if you're not sure what you want and enjoy the part of picking the holiday. Shopping between a trip to the African plains with the Maasi or bullet train travelling around Japan – not a decision you get to enjoy making too often probably.

Once you've narrowed down a holiday – from a list shown with large images, clear price ranges and traveler review ratings – you are met with more useful information. There's a selection of real images from actual holidays, the price 'from' and 'to' and a list of what's included (or not, in the case of flights). You even get a day by day break-down of the trip saying what you'll be doing and where. You can check dates, prices and availability or hit the "Enquire Or Book" icon.

This takes you to an email webform where you can send your request. Yup, this is a real person dealing with you, not a pre-populated list that you can hit to order instantly. That's a positive for a bespoke booking with a helpful travel team guiding you along, but a negative for anyone that wants to book there and then in a hurry. That said, you can call directly with a number given, if you want to handle everything quickly over the phone, or just prefer the person to person talking.

Extra information on "free from" food options and LGBT (they left off the Q+) friendliness are also welcome additions.

Responsible Travel: Sustainability credentials

Responsible Travel can be a little more expensive, but we think the extra cost is worth it

Responsible Travel works to be eco-friendly on a number of fronts.

Community Primarily it was setup to help create a balance between travellers and local communities. The idea being that both sides gain from the trip so the local communities welcome visitors and share their experience and wisdom with the holidaymakers who's money is giving back to helping sustain that community.

One example of community support, beyond just money, is at the Okavango Delta World Heritage Site where locals take you to the Delta so they get paid for their knowledge of the area. This ecosystem is under threat a dam being built that could cut off its water supply. By informing travellers it's more likely that actions like that will be opposed and the area can be protected.

Environment Travel is kept to small groups for a more intimate experience but also less impact on the environment. This also helps to keep the carbon footprint down and where possible local forms of transport will be used, like trains rather than planes, for example. Gas cooking rather than coal, proper waste disposal and locally owned accommodation use are all ways to help reduce negative environmental impact. And that's just naming a few, there are plenty more listed specific to each holiday.

Climate This gets its own section as its mostly about keeping flights to a minimum. This means taking a longer holiday with fewer flights if possible, avoiding internal flights, picking economy seats, choosing a newer aircraft and packing light. Responsible Travel's founder Justin Francis works with the UK government and has founded the Jet Zero Council which has created legislation to get to zero carbon aviation.

Responsible Travel encourages its holidaymakers to give a review of the trip but unlike many sites this also features a star rating for the eco-friendliness of the offering. The result is a clear view, when browsing the site, of just how good each trip is.

Responsible Travel: Customer reviews

With a Trustpilot review rating of 4.3, with 71% "excellent" ratings, this appears to be a very well received website.

One positive review from Catherine in California said: "I have arranged two trips using Responsible Travel, a group walking tour of Mt. Blanc and a guided cycle trip in Italy. Both booking experiences were smooth and all my questions were handled promptly. The trips used very knowledgeable guides and they were open to using local food and entertainment as well as being mindful about recycling and the environment. I will definitely book through Responsible Travel again. Thank you to the team."

One negative review, from RL in Great Britain, talking about his three star review not appearing said: "My conclusion is that they 'lose' less than perfect reviews." The only other negative review was actually about another company, so this can't count against Responsible Travel.

If you'd rather get more customer reviews before making your vacation decision, we think Priceline is a good pick here.

Should you use Responsible Travel?

If you want all the ease of a holiday that's filled with memory making experiences but without the hassle of organizing it yourself, Responsible Travel is great. But on top of that you are also getting the peace of mind knowing that your trip will impact the environment and local community positively – or at least a lot less negatively than most other options. While travel inherently comes with some kind of impact on the environment, Responsible Travel does its best to acknowledge we, as humans, want to travel and minimizes the negatives of it.

This is a great eco-friendly holiday booking tool that works with a clear, informative and concise website and allows you to book with a helpful and friendly travel team of real-world people. It's not the cheapest but in terms of value you get what you pay for. If you just want cheap at any cost, something like CheapTickets will serve you well.

The Case for Responsible Travel: Trends and Statistics

Since 2013 we have released an annual report, The Case for Responsible Travel: Trends and Statistics . Our reports highlight general consumer, business, and destination trends that support the case for a sustainable tourism approach, and focus around a pressing theme for that year.

Trends and Statistics 2021: The 2021 report reflects on the tourism industry’s initial crisis response and its transition into the recovery and resilience phase. In addition to general consumer, business, and destination trends, our ninth edition highlights tangible actions that practitioners, destination managers, and travelers themselves have implemented to build a better future.

Trends and Statistics 2020 : CREST’s 2020 report has a special focus on the two major crises facing our world today: climate change and COVID-19. Sharing cutting-edge research and examples, the report describes how travelers, tourism businesses, and destinations are implementing workable, sustainable solutions to support our planet and its people. Prepared in collaboration with more than 30 organizations, the report also provides an overview of what consumers, businesses, and destinations are experiencing during COVID-19 and offers sustainable solutions that can help the tourism industry on the road to responsible recovery.

Trends and Statistics 2019: CREST’s 2019 edition of our annual Trends & Statistics report includes a special focus on impact tourism, providing cutting-edge examples of how tourism businesses, travelers, and organizations are making strategic contributions of time, talent, and treasure to social and environmental projects in destinations. The report was prepared in collaboration with more than 30 leading organizations and institutions.

Trends and Statistics 2018: CREST’s 2018 report considers overtourism trends in five distinct types of destinations and concludes that the principles of responsible travel and visitor education provide a vital framework for effectively addressing the issue. It also highlights growing consumer demand for authentic and meaningful travel experiences and analyzes the role of tourism businesses in mainstreaming responsible travel. The report was prepared in collaboration with 30 leading tourism organizations and institutions.

Trends and Statistics 2017: CREST’s 2017 annual meta-analysis is a special edition, structured around the UNWTO’s five pillars of the UN’s International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development: 1) inclusive and sustainable economic growth; 2) social inclusiveness, employment, and poverty reduction; 3) resource efficiency, environmental protection, and climate change adaptation and mitigation; 4) respect for cultural values, diversity, and heritage; and 5) mutual understanding, peace, and security. The report highlights the need for success of tourism to be measured in increased retention of tourism revenue in the destination and the equitable distribution of tourism earnings to better economic, social, and environmental conditions. The report was prepared in collaboration with 25 leading tourism organizations and institutions.

Trends and Statistics 2016: This 2016 version of CREST’s annual study demonstrates that the growth of responsible tourism continues to outpace the growth of the tourism industry as a whole. In addition, it concludes that “the social and environmental imperative for responsible travel” is being spurred, in part, by the twin crises of wealth inequality and climate change. “Doing sustainable tourism business in the era of climate change is not just politically correct, it is a comparative advantage,” states to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The report was prepared in collaboration with 16 leading tourism organizations and institutions, including UNEP, the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, IUCN, and the Global Wellness Institute.

Trends and Statistics 2015: The 2015 version of CREST’s annual study includes a meta-analysis of consumer and industry demand for responsible tourism, drawn from surveys, polls, and market studies over the last five years. It is endorsed by the following leading tourism organizations and institutions: United Nations Environment Programme, Global Sustainable Tourism Council, International Institute for Peace through Tourism, The George Washington University International Institute for Tourism Studies, Tourism Cares, The Ocean Foundation, Rainforest Alliance, International Ecotourism Club, The International Ecotourism Society, The Travel Foundation, and Sustainable Travel International.

Trends and Statistics 2014: This second edition of our annual report, which reviews a wide range of surveys and studies from the previous five years, was endorsed by the United Nations World Tourism Organization, Global Sustainable Tourism Council, and eight other leading tourism organizations.

Trends and Statistics 2013: This first edition makes a case for why responsible travel should be a priority for both businesses and destinations alike. This widely used publication which is endorsed by eight leading international tourism organizations, including the United Nations World Tourism Organization, examines scores of surveys and studies done in the past five years to assess commitment to responsible travel.

Responsive Travel website using HTML, CSS and Javascript

In this article, you will learn to create this awesome fully responsive travel website using only HTML, CSS and Javascript. It is fully responsive and has animation on scroll, smooth scrolling, tile animated background images slider and a lot of stuff.

You can download the code .

So without wasting time let's see how to code this.

Video Tutorial

Video tutorial if you like to watch a video and follow along.

So to start coding or following this article. First you need to setup the folder.

For this project, we will use Google Fonts , AOS library for animations and Fontawesome for icons.

So you can either add CDNs manually or you can download the start files from this repo

Github Repo

Repo also includes all the images

So I hope you have the starting files now. Let's start with our navbar first.

To create navbar we need to make a header and that header will contain the navbar, as well as the main section.

The value of href of links are id of the sections that we will create next. Giving ids as a link will take you to that section after clicking on the link.

But to add a smooth scrolling effect to the navbar links. Make sure you give scroll-behaviour to the html.

Navbar

Hero Section

Now to create hero section we will use main tag inside header after nav .

If you notice, i used data-aos attribute in code. This attribute is custom provided by AOS library to add sroll animations. In this case, I am adding fade-up effect. To make it work though. you have to put AOS.init() in app.js along with the CDNs provided in the github repo.

Make sure you download the repo to start

Hero Section

Now the best part of this whole website, the background image slider.

Image Slider

To create Image Slider, first we will create a img below the content and then above img we will create 6 divs of background black in a grid. Those divs will cover whole image when needed. So basically, we will show those divs and hide them and in between we will change the background image using JS.

For this make .background div inside main before hero-section-content

And give some styles.

If you see above code, I used ::before and ::after to create some linear gradients over the image to create the depth. The variables I used are in the CSS file of repo.

Background Image

Now to make this slider working. Just add this simple JS code inside app.js file

After adding this, the slider will work. In above code we are basically using timeout to hide and show the 6 divs and in between changing the src of the image.

Explore Section

To create next section which is "explore section" Its actually simple. Just add this in index.html file.

Explore

If you see your output, you'll notice that the navbar and explore sections are overlapping and navbar is not fully readable. To fix that, we need to add background to the navbar after a certain amount of scroll using JS.

and after adding this, you'll see after 188 of scrollY navbar changing its background color.

Service Section

In this section, for icons I am using fontawesome, so make sure you have its CDN to be able to see the icons in your code.

Services

Book Section and footer

And the last but not least, book now and footer.

last section

So we are done, now to make this website responsive. Just use media-query of CSS like this.

And the website is done. Its fully responsive now too.

So we are done, we made this awesome responsive travel website. If you stuck anywhere or run into some error, feel free to leave a comment or DM me on instagram .

I hope you like this article, you like the website design and the tutorial. If this helped you in someway make sure you follow me on my instagram and youtube .

You can checkout my youtube channel, I create lots of content like this including fullstack ecommerce website and fullstack blogging website.

You can download the code . Thanks for reading 👋

We have always believed in the life-changing power of travel, but for that power to exist we need to travel the right way. Since the very beginning, G Adventures’ vision for travelling responsibly has meant giving back as much — if not more — than what you take away. Yes, travel should be incredibly fun (have you been on one of our tours?), but we also believe travel needs to be a force for good. For you, for local communities around the world, and for the world itself — we call it “community tourism.” See how we do it below.

responsible travel website

A lot of companies use “sustainability” or “sustainable travel” to talk about exploring the world in a better way, but we’ve never been ones to follow in others’ footsteps or borrow out-dated ideas. Our commitment to making travel a force for good is different — so we call it G for Good. It stands for all of the social, environmental, and ethical good we create as a business which helps to fuel community tourism . Which is… you ask? It means our tours are built on meaningful relationships with local communities and directly benefit the people and places we visit. Today, our definition of community tourism means that the communities we positively impact ripples far beyond these destinations, to include our employees, supplier and agent partners, small business owners, customers, social followers, and travellers like you. G for Good is what makes us, us. With your help, we can make travel the force for good we’ve known it can be since our company was established over three decades ago.

Acting Responsibly

Our efforts to protect and conserve our world fall under two approaches. The first, Acting Responsibly, is our commitment to improve the sustainability of our own operations. You can’t create change without taking action — so that’s what we’ve done. If you want to make sure your next trip follows these guidelines, all you have to do is travel with us!

Animal Welfare

G Adventures recognizes the importance of animal welfare. That’s why we have worked with experts from World Animal Protection, The Jane Goodall Institute and The World Cetacean Alliance to draw up a robust policy, which builds on the ABTA Global Welfare Guidelines for Animals in Tourism and puts the needs of animals first. We want to ensure that all animals featured on our tours are treated humanely.

Child Welfare

It is critical that no child is ever harmed as a result of tourism. Travellers have the power and responsibility to make a true impact in the communities they visit, and that’s why we actively work to ensure child welfare is protected in the places we operate. We were also the first global travel company to achieve Friend’s International ChildSafe certification.

Climate Action

With all the good global travel does for local communities, it’s an unfortunate truth that the industry produces environmentally harmful carbon dioxide. That’s why we signed the Glasgow Declaration on Climate Action in Tourism and got to work on halving our carbon footprint by 2030. Want to know exactly how we and our travellers are going about it? Read on to review our full Climate-Biodiversity Action Plan.

Respecting local cultures

Connecting curious travellers with Indigenous communities is an essential part of our identity at G Adventures. We are committed to respecting the rights, history, and culture of Indigenous people while ensuring that tourism supports their well-being.

Plastics Partnership Project

Plastic pollution is a huge global problem. G Adventures is working with our partners to eliminate as much single-use plastic on our tours as possible.

Traveller Conduct Policy

We believe travel should be a respectful, safe, and enjoyable experience for everyone. We’re a community of diverse individuals united by a profound respect for, and enthusiastic belief in, our values and each other. That’s why we designed a set of guidelines to help establish a sense of safety, security, and happiness for all on any of our tours. This includes our staff members, partner suppliers, and the local people and cultures in the destinations we visit.

responsible travel website

Creating Positive Impact

Creating Positive Impact is our second approach to responsible travel. These initiatives focus on leaving the right impact in the places you visit with us.

responsible travel website

Established in 2003, Planeterra is our non-profit partner dedicated to ensuring communities touched by tourism benefit from the opportunities it provides. They help empower local people to develop their communities, conserve their cultures, and create humane and supportive systems for their endeavours.

Planeterra Projects

Our mission has always been a simple one — to help people thrive through solutions, not handouts. We do this by providing the resources and opportunities for local people in the areas we serve to develop and strengthen their communities with projects supported by Planeterra. Then, our network of travellers provide these communities with the long-term income to make these solutions sustainable.

Ripple Score

You deserve to see exactly what we mean when we say we’re changing lives through travel. Now you can. On a scale of one to 100, this score shows you how much of your money spent in destination goes towards using local services on your tour. The higher the Ripple Score, the more money that is staying in the local community. Look for it on your trip itinerary.

G Values Fund

Our CEOs are the best tour leaders the world has to offer. The G Values Fund helps them further provide amazing experiences to our travellers with low interest loans that bring their travel business ideas to life.

Additional Responsible Travel Commitments

Here are more ways you can see our commitment to spreading G for Good around the world.

Our Modern Slavery Statement

G Adventures is committed to understanding all potential modern slavery risks related to our business and to putting steps into place to ensure there is no slavery or human trafficking in our operations.

CEO Wellbeing Fund

At every step of every tour, our CEOs are there for us. The CEO Wellbeing Fund is our commitment to ensuring they’re supported, too.

13 Ways Responsible Tourism Can Help Save Wildlife

Posted: April 19, 2023 | Last updated: June 7, 2023

There are a handful of important and highly-reputable certification programs that travelers can look for before participating in an experience that involves wildlife. This is perhaps the first step travelers should take and the easiest. Each of the organizations mentioned on the following three slides provides accreditation or some other form of thorough review that recognizes companies committed to responsible practices.

Certifications

The <a href="https://sanctuaryfederation.org/" title="Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries">Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries</a> accredits and recognizes sanctuaries and rescue centers that meet the highest standards of care during rescue, rehabilitation, and for the rest of the animal's life. The organization's website lists more than 200 sanctuaries around the world that have been vetted and received its accreditation. The website can be used to search for sanctuaries by animal type, region of the world, or by the sanctuary name.

ChangChill Elephant Sanctuary, Thailand

<a href="https://whaleheritagesites.org/" title="Whale Heritage Sites">Whale Heritage Sites</a> and <a href="https://whalesense.org/" title="Whale Sense">Whale Sense</a> are two separate global organizations that recognize and accredit responsible whale and dolphin-watching tours and companies. The Whale Heritage Site program is an initiative created by the <a href="https://worldcetaceanalliance.org/">World Cetacean Alliance</a> that's operated in partnership with <a href="https://www.worldanimalprotection.org/">World Animal Protection</a>. Its certification program is designed to promote responsible whale and dolphin watching to the public in destinations worldwide. Whale Sense meanwhile, is sponsored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Whale and Dolphin Conservation organization. It is an education and recognition program offered to commercial whale watching companies in the U.S. Atlantic and Alaska Regions. Both of these organizations provide lists on their respective websites of responsible tour operators, allowing travelers to easily identify the best companies to book tours with.

Elephant rides involve a lifetime of cruelty for the elephants involved. Thankfully, a growing number of tour operators have stopped including such venues on their tours. But there are still plenty of travel companies featuring these inhumane experiences. Steer clear of this type of activity in order to help bring about industry change. Instead opt to see elephants in the wild via a safari or visit a responsibly-run elephant sanctuary. World Animal Protection features a <a href="https://www.worldanimalprotection.org/elephant-friendly-tourist-guide#slice-11" title="list of approved elephant sanctuaries">list of approved elephant sanctuaries</a> on its website. The sanctuaries, which have been carefully vetted by WAP, are located throughout Thailand, Cambodia, Nepal, India, Laos, and Sri Lanka.

Beyond looking for certifications, there are other ways tourists can ensure their choices are not harmful to wild animals. For instance, just because a venue or wildlife attraction has positive reviews on TripAdvisor, doesn’t mean the venue does not harm animals. “Some years ago, researchers did a study where they analyzed thousands of reviews of wildlife venues on TripAdvisor and 80 percent of people left positive reviews of venues that mistreated animals,” Nicole Barrantes, of World Animal Protection, explained during the recent webinar. “So sometimes, it’s challenging to identify animal cruelty. We suggest keeping this in mind when you’re doing research.”

Two lions (Panthera leo) resting high up in a tree

The wildlife entertainment industry knows people don’t want to support animal cruelty, says Barrantes, so they use the word “sanctuary” to confuse people into coming to their venue. Check the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries website to verify that a venue is truly a sanctuary and one that has been vetted. If the facility is not on the list, it is best to avoid visiting altogether.

A monkey in a cage

If you're uncertain about a wildlife attraction, here's the best rule of thumb, according to experts: Any experience where you can ride, touch, or feed an animal is animal cruelty. "Wildlife should be viewed with no contact or interaction," Intrepid Travel's Global Environmental Impact Manager, Susanne Etti, explained during the webinar.

A mother gorilla and her baby in the rainforest of the Congo Basin.

Small tours are far more eco-friendly as they have less of an impact on the places being visited. And as it turns out, these type of tours are also more wildlife friendly. “You’ll get a more intimate experience and it will have less disruption for the animals you’re encountering,” Kelley Louise, founder of Impact Travel Alliance, explained during the webinar.

Travelers using binoculars in a forest

Don’t seek out, participate in, or support opportunities that keep wildlife in captivity. Instead, opt for opportunities that allow you to see wildlife in the wild, in their own natural environment, advises Louise. The options include walking tours, hiking expeditions, biking tours, and safari explorations—all of which allow for observing animals in their natural environment. For those who like cruise vacations,<a href="https://www.hurtigruten.com/en-us/expeditions/" title="Hurtigruten Expeditions"> Hurtigruten Expeditions</a> is known for its highly eco-conscious ethos and practices.

Hurtigruten Galapagos cruises

World Animal Protection recently released its annual <a href="https://www.worldanimalprotection.us/blogs/new-report-reveals-major-travel-companies-are-failing-wild-animals" title="Tracking the Travel Industry">Tracking the Travel Industry </a>report, which involved an exhaustive review of dozens of companies operating in the travel industry. The WAP report identified companies that are leaders in responsible wildlife tourism and those that are continuing to sell and profit off of venues that involve cruelty to animals. Concerned travelers should familiarize themselves with the company names on the report's list of the best and worst. And make spending decisions accordingly.

Visit Sumatra with Intrepid Travel

The names to know when it comes to responsible wildlife tourism include: Airbnb, Expedia, Booking.com, G Adventures, Intrepid, The Travel Corporation, and Education First. Each of these companies received top marks in the WAP vetting process. "All of these companies are leaders in the responsible wildlife tourism space,” explained Barrantes. “They are the committed to protecting animals…World Animal Protection encourages the public to book travel with these companies. We want to support companies that are doing the right thing."

Intrepid Travel Plants Trees in Kenya

WAP recommends avoiding the following companies, all of which continue to sell and promote activities that are harmful to wildlife. Get Your Guide, Groupon, Trip.com, Klook, Musement, and Tui. “Unfortunately, all of these companies, in some form or another, sell wildlife entertainment,” said Barrantes. “That could be dolphin shows, elephant rides, tiger selfie opportunities. We have reached out to all of these six companies to discuss their animal welfare policy or lack of animal welfare policy, but as of today there is no response.”

Travel planning on the computer

Each of us has a role to play when it comes to protecting the planet and wildlife. That includes governments, industry associations, travel companies and yes, individual travelers. Spread the word about what you’ve learned and how to book travel that does not perpetuate a life of cruelty and captivity for wildlife. “As travelers we have the power to decide how we book our vacations and where we put our money,” said Barrantes. Not supporting companies that continue to perpetuate wildlife cruelty with your tourism dollars, sends a clear message to businesses that you find such practices unacceptable.

Baltimore bridge collapse: Everything we know about the disaster

Rescue teams are searching for survivors after the 1.6-mile long Francis Scott Key Bridge crashed into the Patapsco River at around 1.30am local time (5.30am UK time) on Tuesday.

Wednesday 27 March 2024 04:54, UK

responsible travel website

A major bridge collapsed in the US city of Baltimore after it was hit by a 289m-long cargo ship.

Six people remain missing after two others were rescued from the water following the disaster in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Here's everything we know about the incident so far.

What happened?

A large section of the 1.6 mile-long Francis Scott Key Bridge fell into the water after it was struck by a container ship, known as the Dali, at around 1.30am local time (5.30am UK time).

The vessel struck one of the bridge's supports, causing the whole structure to collapse, sending the road surface and steel beams crashing into the water.

The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation into what happened, with its chair Jennifer Homendy saying at least six people are still missing.

Eight people were initially unaccounted for - with one described as being in a "very serious condition" in hospital. The other was not injured.

The six missing are believed to be part of a construction crew that was repairing potholes on the bridge, the Maryland Department of Transportation has said.

All 22 crew members on board the ship, including the two pilots, have been accounted for and there were no reports of injuries.

What does the footage show?

Dramatic video shows the cargo vessel approaching the bridge before the structure collapses into the water.

Vehicles can be seen falling from the bridge.

An exact number has not been given, but Baltimore fire department's communications chief Kevin Cartwright said multiple vehicles were on the bridge when it was struck by the ship, one of which was the size of an HGV.

US president Joe Biden said in a news conference hours after the collapse that personnel on the ship were able to alert the Maryland Department of Transportation that they had lost control of their vessel.

Mr Biden added this "undoubtedly saved lives" at it meant local authorities were able to close the bridge before it was struck.

Bridge in Baltimore collapses after apparent impact with cargo ship

What happened in the moments before the crash?

CCTV and marine tracking data shows the container ship lost power for about 60 seconds about four minutes before it hit the bridge. It appeared to adjust its course and start smoking before impact.

According to the timings on the CCTV, the vessel hit the structure at 1.28:44am - with the bridge collapsing four seconds later.

The operators of the Dali cargo ship issued a mayday call that the vessel had lost power moments before the crash, but the ship still headed toward the bridge at "a very, very rapid speed", Maryland Governor Wes Moore said.

The ship was moving at eight knots, which is roughly 9mph, when it hit the structure, the governor said.

Francis Scott Key Bridge

What do we know about the ship?

The Singapore-flagged container ship, known as Dali, was headed to Colombo in Sri Lanka at the time of the collision.

Synergy Marine Group, the company which manages the ship, said it hit the bridge while under the control of two pilots.

The firm said the exact cause of the incident was yet to be determined.

The Dali was previously involved in a minor incident when it hit a quay at the Port of Antwerp in Belgium in 2016, according to Vessel Finder and maritime accident site Shipwrecklog.

An inspection of the Dali last June at a port in Chile identified a problem with the ship's "propulsion and auxiliary machinery", according to Equasis, a shipping information system.

The deficiency involved gauges and thermometers, but the website's online records did not elaborate.

The most recent inspection listed for the Dali was conducted by the US Coast Guard in New York on 13 September 2023. The "standard examination" did not identify any deficiencies, according to the Equasis data.

What do we know about the bridge itself?

Last June, federal inspectors rated the 47-year-old bridge to be in fair condition. But the structure did not appear to have pier protection to withstand the crash, experts said.

"If a bridge pier without adequate protection is hit by a ship of this size, there is very little that the bridge could do," according to Virginia Tech engineering professor Roberto Leon.

Built in 1977 and referred to locally as the Key Bridge, it was named after the author of the American national anthem.

What impact could this collision have?

All ship traffic into and out of the Port of Baltimore has been suspended until further notice, though the port remains open to trucks, Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld said.

Last year, the port handled a record 52.3m tons of foreign cargo worth $80bn (£63bn), according to the state. In addition to cargo, more than 444,000 passengers cruised out of the port in 2023.

The port is a major east coast hub for shipping. The bridge spans the Patapsco River, which massive cargo ships use to reach the Chesapeake Bay and then the Atlantic Ocean.

The Dali was headed from Baltimore to Colombo, Sri Lanka, and flying under a Singapore flag, according to data from Marine Traffic.

President Biden said that he plans to travel to Baltimore "as quickly as I can" and that he expects the federal government to pick up the entire cost of rebuilding the bridge.

Has this ever happened before?

From 1960 to 2015, there were 35 major bridge collapses worldwide due to ship or barge collisions, with a total of 342 people killed, according to a 2018 report from the World Association for Waterborne Transport Infrastructure.

Eighteen of those collapses happened in the United States.

Among them were a 2002 incident in which a barge struck the Interstate 40 bridge over the Arkansas River at Webbers Falls, Oklahoma, sending vehicles plunging into the water. Fourteen people died and 11 were injured.

In 2001, a tugboat and barge struck the Queen Isabella Causeway in Port Isabel, Texas, causing a section of the bridge to tumble 80 feet into the bay below. Eight people were killed.

In 1993, barges being pushed by a towboat in dense fog hit and displaced the Big Bayou Canot railroad bridge near Mobile, Alabama.

Minutes later, an Amtrak train with 220 people onboard reached the displaced bridge and derailed, killing 47 people and injuring 103 others.

It Can Take Years to Repair Bridges After a Collapse

The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge wiped out a roadway that tens of thousands of people used to travel to and from Baltimore.

Vehicles on a collapsed bridge over water.

The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge early on Tuesday wiped out a roadway that tens of thousands of people used to travel to and from Baltimore every day, and it is difficult to say how long it will take to rebuild.

Gov. Wes Moore of Maryland called the reconstruction a “long-term build” at a news conference on Tuesday and said that the authorities were still focused on rescuing people.

The repair time after catastrophic bridge collapses has varied over the past few decades. The episodes are difficult to compare because of differences in the structure of each bridge and the damage, and in the surrounding environment.

One of the deadliest bridge crashes in American history was at the Big Bayou Canot Bridge in Alabama in 1993. A towboat struck a rail bridge on a foggy September morning and threw the train tracks out of alignment.

Minutes later, an Amtrak passenger train derailed as it crossed the water, killing 47 people. The rebuilding efforts began within days.

In 2001, barges struck the Queen Isabella Causeway bridge that connected Port Isabel to South Padre Island in Texas, killing eight people and sending a section of the structure plummeting into a lagoon in the Gulf of Mexico. Much of the bridge remained intact after the collision, and it was repaired and reinforced in about two months .

In 2007, an Interstate 35 bridge over the Mississippi River near Minneapolis collapsed under the weight of rush hour traffic, killing 13 people. The disaster appeared to have been caused by structural issues, not a crash. That bridge was rebuilt in a little over a year .

And last year, an overpass section of Interstate 95 in Philadelphia collapsed after a fiery crash involving a tanker loaded with gasoline, killing one person. A temporary roadway opened within two weeks. In 2022, a bridge collapse over a ravine in Pittsburgh injured at least 10 people. The bridge reopened within a year.

To some experts, the catastrophe in Baltimore recalled one at the Sunshine Skyway Bridge in Florida more than 40 years ago. The bridge tumbled into the water near Tampa in 1980 after a freighter hit a support column. The collapse killed 35 people.

About seven years passed before a new bridge opened over Tampa Bay.

Any attempt to rebuild a bridge as long as the Francis Scott Key, which is 1.6 miles, would probably also be a multiyear effort, said Benjamin W. Schafer, a professor of engineering at Johns Hopkins.

“There isn’t a temporary bridge structure to be put up at those span lengths,” he said, adding that search and rescue operations would be the priority, followed by wreckage removal so that ships can pass through.

President Biden addressed the collapse in remarks on Tuesday, calling the Francis Scott Key Bridge “one of the most important elements” supporting the U.S. economy in the northeast. Mr. Biden said that he expected the federal government to pay for the “entire cost” of bridge repairs.

Katie Rogers contributed reporting.

Who owns the ship that struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore?

By Megan Cerullo

Updated on: March 26, 2024 / 5:05 PM EDT / CBS News

The collapse of  Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge on Tuesday after being struck by a cargo ship has raised questions about who owns and manages the ship, as well as on the potential impact on one the busiest ports in the U.S.

Called the Dali, the 948-foot vessel that hit the bridge is managed by Synergy Marine Group, a Singapore-based company with over 660 ships under management around the world, according to its website . The group said the ship was operated by charter vessel company Synergy Group and chartered by Danish shipping giant Maersk at the time of the incident, which sent vehicles and people tumbling into the Patapsco River.

"We are horrified by what has happened in Baltimore, and our thoughts are with all of those affected," Maersk said in a statement to CBS News Tuesday, in which it also confirmed the ship was carrying cargo for Maersk customers. The company had no crew or personnel aboard the ship.

The Dali, which can carry up to 10,000 twenty-foot equivalent units, or TEUs, was carrying nearly 4,700 containers at the time of the collision. It was operated by a 22-person, Indian crew. It was not immediately clear what kind of cargo the ship was carrying.

Who owns and manages the Dali?

The Dali is owned by Grace Ocean Private, a Singapore-based company that provides water transportation services. The ship was chartered by Danish container shipping company Maersk at the time of the collision.

Synergy Marine, founded in 2006, provides a range of ship management services, including managing ships' technical components and their crews and overseeing safety, according to S&P Capital IQ. Its parent company, Unity Group Holdings International, an investment holding company, was founded in 2008 and is based in Hong Kong.

Where was the ship headed?

The outbound ship had left Baltimore and was headed for Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, Synergy Marine Group said in a  press release .

How busy is the Port of Baltimore?

In 2023, the Port of Baltimore handled a record 52.3 million tons of foreign cargo, worth $80 billion, according  to the office of Maryland Gov. Wes Moore. The port is also a significant provider of local jobs.

The top port in the U.S. for sugar and gypsum imports, it is the ninth busiest U.S. port by the total volume and value of foreign cargo handled. All vessel traffic into and out of the facility is currently suspended, although the port remains open and trucks continue to be processed within the its terminals, according to a statement release by Port of Baltimore officials.

What is the potential local economic impact?

Directly, the port supports 15,300 jobs, while another 140,000 in the area are related to port activities. The jobs provide a combined $3.3 billion in personal income, according to a CBS News report . The Port of Baltimore said Tuesday that it is unclear how long ship traffic will be suspended.

The disaster also caused chaos for local drivers. The Maryland Transportation Authority said all lanes were closed in both directions on I-695, with traffic being detoured to I-95 and I-895.

How could the bridge collapse affect consumers and businesses?

Experts say the bridge collapse could cause significant supply chain disruptions.

"While Baltimore is not one of the largest U.S. East Coast ports, it still imports and exports more than 1 million containers each year, so there is the potential for this to cause significant disruption to supply chains," Emily Stausbøll, a market analyst at Xeneta, an ocean and air freight analytics platform, said in a statement.

She added that freight services from Asia to the East Coast in the U.S. have already been hampered by drought in the Panama Canal, as well as risks related to conflict in the Red Sea. Nearby ports, including those in New York, New Jersey and Virginia, will be relied on to handle more shipments if Baltimore remains inaccessible.

Whether ocean freight shipping rates will rise dramatically, potentially affecting consumers as retailers pass along higher costs, will depend on how much extra capacity the alternate ports can handle, Stausbøll said. "However, there is only so much port capacity available and this will leave supply chains vulnerable to any further pressure."

Marty Durbin, senior vice president of policy at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, said that the bridge is a critical connector of "people, businesses, and communities."

"Unfortunately, its prolonged closure will likely disrupt commercial activities and supply chains that rely on the bridge and Port of Baltimore each day," he said in a statement.

What other industries could be affected?

Trucking companies could be severely affected by the disaster.

"Aside from the obvious tragedy, this incident will have significant and long-lasting impacts on the region," American Trucking Associations spokesperson Jessica Gail said, calling Key Bridge and Baltimore's port "critical components'' of the nation's infrastructure.

Gail noted that 1.3 million trucks cross the bridge every year — 3,600 a day. Trucks that carry hazardous materials will now have to make 30 miles of detours around Baltimore because they are prohibited from using the city's tunnels, she said, adding to delays and increasing fuel costs.

"Time-wise, it's going to hurt us a lot," added Russell Brehm, the terminal manager in Baltimore for Lee Transport, which trucks hazardous materials such as petroleum products and chemicals. The loss of the bridge will double to two hours the time it takes Lee to get loads from its terminal in Baltimore's Curtis Bay to the BJ's gasoline station in the waterfront neighborhood of Canton, he estimated.

Cruise operators are also being affected. A Carnival cruise ship that set off Sunday for the Bahamas had been scheduled to return to Baltimore on March 31. Carnival said Tuesday it is "currently evaluating options for Carnival Legend's scheduled return on Sunday." The company also has cruises scheduled to set sail from Baltimore through the summer.

Norwegian Cruise Line last year introduced new routes departing from the Port of Baltimore. Its sailings are scheduled for late this year. The company said the Key Bridge collapse doesn't immediately require it to reroute any ships.

Who will pay to rebuild the bridge?

President Biden said Tuesday that the federal government, with congressional support, would pay to rebuild the bridge.

"We're going to work with our partners in Congress to make sure the state gets the support it needs. It's my intention that the federal government will pay for the entire cost of reconstructing that bridge," Biden said in comments from the White House. "And I expect the Congress to support my effort. This is going take some time. The people of Baltimore can count on us though, to stick with them, at every step of the way, till the port is reopened and the bridge is rebuilt."

What caused ship to slam into Baltimore's Key Bridge? What we know

What we know about the condition of Baltimore's Key Bridge before its collapse

What we know about the container ship that crashed into the Baltimore bridge

  • The ship that crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge on Tuesday was the Singapore-flagged Dali.
  • The container ship had been chartered by Maersk, the Danish shipping company.
  • Two people were recovered from the water but six remain missing, authorities said.

Insider Today

A container ship crashed into a major bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday, causing its collapse into the Patapsco River.

A livestream showed vehicles traveling on the Francis Scott Key Bridge just moments before the impact at 1:28 a.m. ET.

Baltimore first responders called the situation a "developing mass casualty event" and a "dire emergency," per The Associated Press.

James Wallace, chief of the Baltimore Fire Department, said in a press conference that two people had been recovered from the water.

One was uninjured, but the other was transported to a local trauma center in a "very serious condition."

Wallace said up to 20 people were thought to have fallen into the river and some six people were still missing.

Richard Worley, Baltimore's police chief, said there was "no indication" the collision was purposeful or an act of terrorism.

Wes Moore, the governor of Maryland, declared a state of emergency around 6 a.m. ET. He said his office was in close communication with Pete Buttigieg, the transportation secretary.

"We are working with an interagency team to quickly deploy federal resources from the Biden Administration," Moore added.

Understanding why the bridge collapsed could have implications for safety, in both the shipping and civil engineering sectors.

The container ship is the Singapore-flagged Dali, which is about 984 feet long, and 157 feet wide, per a listing on VesselFinder.

An unclassified Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency report said that the ship "lost propulsion" as it was leaving port, ABC News reported.

The crew notified officials that they had lost control and warned of a possible collision, the report said, per the outlet.

The Dali's owner is listed as Grace Ocean, a Singapore-based firm, and its manager is listed as Synergy Marine, which is also headquartered in Singapore.

Shipping news outlet TradeWinds reported that Grace Ocean confirmed the Dali was involved in the collapse, but is still determining what caused the crash.

Related stories

Staff for Grace Ocean declined to comment on the collision when contacted by Business Insider.

"All crew members, including the two pilots have been accounted for and there are no reports of any injuries. There has also been no pollution," Synergy Marine said in a statement.

The company did not respond to a request for further comment from BI.

'Horrified'

Maersk chartered the Dali, with a schedule for the ship on its website.

"We are horrified by what has happened in Baltimore, and our thoughts are with all of those affected," the Danish shipping company said in a statement.

Maersk added: "We are closely following the investigations conducted by authorities and Synergy, and we will do our utmost to keep our customers informed."

Per ship tracking data, the Dali left Baltimore on its way to Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, at around 1 a.m., about half an hour before the crash.

The Port of Baltimore is thought to be the largest in the US for roll-on/roll-off ships carrying trucks and trailers.

Barbara Rossi, associate professor of engineering science at the University of Oxford, told BI the force of the impact on one of the bridge's supporting structures "must have been immense" to lead to the collapse.

Dr Salvatore Mercogliano, a shipping analyst and maritime historian at Campbell University, told BI: "It appears Dali left the channel while outbound. She would have been under the control of the ship's master with a Chesapeake Bay pilot onboard to advise the master.

"The deviation out of the channel is probably due to a mechanical issue as the ship had just departed the port, but you cannot rule out human error as that was the cause of the Ever Forward in 2022 just outside of Baltimore."

He was referring to the incident two years ago when the container ship became grounded for a month in Chesapeake Bay after loading up cargo at the Port of Baltimore.

The US Coast Guard found the incident was caused by pilot error, cellphone use, and "inadequate bridge resource management."

Claudia Norrgren, from the maritime research firm Veson Nautical, told BI: "The industry bodies who are here to protect against incidents like this, such as the vessel's flag state, classification society, and regulatory bodies, will step in and conduct a formal investigation into the incident. Until then, it'll be very hard for anyone to truly know what happened on board."

This may not have been the first time the Dali hit a structure.

In 2016, maritime blogs such as Shipwreck Log and ship-tracking site VesselFinder posted videos of what appears to be the stern of the same, blue-hulled container vessel scraping against a quay in Antwerp.

A representative for the Port of Antwerp told BI the Dali did collide with a quay there eight years ago but couldn't "give any information about the cause of the accident."

The Dali is listed as being built in 2015 by Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea.

Crew member on DALI said everyone on board was safe hours after bridge collapse, official says

From CNN’s Amy Simonson

A crew member on the DALI cargo ship sent a message hours after the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed Tuesday saying everybody on board was safe, according to Apostleship of the Sea director Andy Middleton.

Middleton, who spent time with the captain of the DALI Monday, told CNN’s Laura Coates he reached out to a crew member after hearing about the incident Tuesday morning.

He said there were 22 members aboard the ship from India who were setting sail earlier Tuesday morning and were heading toward Sri Lanka.

“I was able to reach out to a crew member very early this morning around 5:30 (a.m. ET) or 6 (a.m. ET) and get a message to them asking if they were OK,” he said. “That crew member responded within just a few minutes advising that the crew was safe, and everybody that [was] on board was safe.”

Middleton was told by the ship's captain Monday that the vessel was going to take a longer route to avoid risks along the Yemen coast.

“When I was out with the captain yesterday, we were talking while we were driving, and he advised that they were sailing down and around the tip of South Africa in order to avoid the incidents that are going on off the Yemen coast, and it was a safer way to go,” he said.

Middleton said the  Apostleship of the Sea  is a ministry to seafarers with members that spend time in the port and on the vessels as a friendly face to the seafarers that visit the Port of Baltimore, “taking care of their needs to make sure that they're reminded of their God-given human dignity when they're here in Baltimore.”

Search operation ends in "heartbreaking conclusion," Maryland governor says. Here's the latest

From CNN staff

The Dali container vessel after striking the Francis Scott Key Bridge that collapsed into the Patapsco River in Baltimore, Maryland, on Tuesday, March 26.

Six people, who were believed to be part of a road construction crew, are presumed dead after Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed early Tuesday morning. The collapse came after a 984-foot cargo ship hit the bridge's pillar.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore told reporters Tuesday evening it's a "really heartbreaking conclusion to a challenging day."

Late Tuesday, it was discovered that two of the construction workers who went missing after the bridge collapsed were from Guatemala , the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said late Tuesday.

Here's what you should know to get up to speed:

  • The victims: Eight people were on the bridge  when it fell, according to officials. At least two people were rescued — one was taken to the hospital and was later  discharged , fire official and the medical center said.
  • The incident: Video shows the moment the entire bridge structure falls into the water, as the ship hits one of the bridge's pillars. CNN analysis shows that the  ships lights flickered  and it veered off course before it hit the bridge. Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said the crew on the ship were able to issue a "mayday" before colliding into the bridge, which allowed the authorities to stop incoming traffic from going onto the bridge.
  • Response efforts: Earlier, dive teams from various state and local agencies were brought in to assist in search-and-rescue operations, according to Maryland State Police Secretary Col. Roland L. Butler Jr.. The mission started with 50 personnel and continued to grow before the Coast Guard announced Tuesday evening that it was suspending its active search-and-rescue operation and transitioning to a "different phase."
  • The investigation: Authorities are still working to establish exactly how the crash occurred. The National Transportation Safety Board will look into  how the bridge was built  and investigate the structure itself. It will "take time to dig through" whether the bridge had ever been  flagged for any safety deficiencies , NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy said.
  • Rebuilding the bridge: US Sen. Chris Van Hollen said the path to rebuilding the bridge will be "long and expensive." Senior White House adviser Tom Perez told reporters Tuesday “it’s too early” to tell how long it will take to rebuild the bridge. President Joe Biden said Tuesday he wants the federal government to bear the full cost of rebuilding the collapsed bridge, noting that it will not wait for the company who owns the container ship DALI to shoulder the costs. Funding could come from the Federal Highway Administration as well as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, but it may require additional funding from Congress.

2 of the missing construction workers from bridge collapse were from Guatemala, foreign ministry says

From CNN’s Allison Gordon, Flora Charner and Amy Simonson

Two of the construction workers missing from the bridge collapse in Baltimore were from Guatemala, the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement late Tuesday.

Those missing included a 26-year-old originally from San Luis, Petén. The other is a 35-year-old from Camotán, Chiquimula, the statement said.

The ministry said both were part of a work team “repairing the asphalt on the bridge at the time of the accident.”

The statement did not name the two people missing, but it said the country’s consul general in Maryland “went to the area where the families of those affected are located,” where he hopes to be able to meet with the brothers of both missing people.

The consulate   also issued a statement Tuesday saying its consul general in Maryland "remains in contact with local authorities," and also confirmed that two of those missing "were of Guatemalan origin.”

Six people, who were believed to be part of a road construction crew, are presumed dead after Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed early Tuesday morning when a cargo ship hit the bridge's pillar.

State and federal officials have not released information about the identities of any of the six missing workers.

Underwater mapping of bridge collapse area to begin Wednesday, Baltimore fire chief says

From CNN's Jennifer Henderson

Search operations near the Key Bridge collapse have shut down for the night due to dangerous conditions, but the process of underwater mapping with many local, state and federal dive teams will begin Wednesday, Baltimore City Fire Chief James Wallace told CNN’s Anderson Cooper Tuesday night.

Wallace said the portion of the Patapsco River is “tidal influenced, so it goes through tide cycles just like the open waters of the Chesapeake Bay does.”

The water depths in the area under the bridge vary from 40 feet to more than 60 feet, Wallace said. The deeper the divers go, the colder the temperatures they encounter, and the visibility is zero, he added.

Wallace said when crews arrived Tuesday morning, the surface water temperatures of the Patapsco River were about 47 degrees with an air temperature of 44-45 degrees.

Here's what you should know about the historic Francis Scott Key Bridge

The Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed early Tuesday after a massive container ship lost power and crashed into the iconic Baltimore bridge, sending people and vehicles into the frigid Patapsco River.

Six people, believed to be part of a road construction crew, are presumed dead and the Coast Guard has ended its active search and rescue mission.

Here's what you should know about the historic bridge:

  • How old?: The Francis Scott Key Bridge, also referred to as just the Key Bridge, opened to traffic in March 1977 and is the final link in the Baltimore Beltway, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA.) It crosses over the 50-foot-deep Patapsco River, where former US attorney Francis Scott Key found inspiration to write the lyrics to the Star Spangled Banner, the MDTA says.
  • How long?: The bridge was 1.6 miles long when standing, MDTA reports.
  • Traffic volume: More than 30,000 people commuted daily on the bridge, according to Maryland Gov. Wes Moore.
  • How much did it cost?: The bridge cost $60.3 million to build, MDTA says. Since its collapse, President Joe Biden said he’s committed to helping rebuild the bridge as soon as possible.
  • About the port: Baltimore ranks as the ninth biggest US port for international cargo. It handled a record 52.3 million tons, valued at $80.8 billion, in 2023. According to the Maryland state government, the port supports 15,330 direct jobs and 139,180 jobs in related services.
  • About the ship: The bridge collapsed after a container vessel called Dali collided with one of its supports. Dali is operated by Singapore-based Synergy Group but had been chartered to carry cargo by Danish shipping giant Maersk . The ship is about 984 feet long , according to MarineTraffic data. That’s the length of almost three football fields.

Baltimore woman says bridge collapse was "like a piece of family dissolved"

From CNN's Kit Maher

For longtime Baltimore resident, Ceely, who opted not to share her last name, seeing footage of the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse  Tuesday was deeply personal.

“I was very heavy-hearted,” Ceely told CNN. “Very tearful, thinking about the families whose loved ones may be in the water and just remembering when the bridge was constructed, and it was just like a piece of family dissolved.”

Ceely was at a prayer group Tuesday morning when she saw the news. She recalled being afraid when she first crossed the bridge while in Ford Maverick in 1975, but grew to like it because it saved time on the road.

“It was a main artery just like a blood line. It was a main artery to the other side of town. It was awesome. It beat going through the city all the time,” she said.

Elder Rashad A. Singletary , a senior pastor who led Tuesday night’s vigil at Mt. Olive Baptist Church told CNN that many church members watched the bridge's construction.

"It’s a part of the community. A lot of our individuals in our congregation drive that bridge to go to work, and so now it’s really a life changing moment,” he said.

"Heartbreaking conclusion to a challenging day," Maryland governor says as Coast Guard ended search operation

From CNN's Aditi Sangal

People look out toward the Francis Scott Key Bridge following its collapse in Baltimore, Maryland on March 26.

More than 18 hours after the collapse of the Baltimore bridge, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said it was a heartbreaking conclusion after the Coast Guard ended the search-and-rescue operation for the six people who were on the bridge when it collapsed.

It's a "really heartbreaking conclusion to a challenging day," he said.

"We put every single asset possible — air, land and sea" to find the missing people, he told reporters on Tuesday evening. "While even though we're moving on now to a recovery mission, we're still fully committed to making sure that we're going to use every single asset to now bring a sense of closure to the families," the governor added.

6 people presumed dead after Baltimore bridge collapse, Coast Guard says. Here's what we know

As the sun sets in Baltimore, six people are presumed dead after a major bridge collapsed overnight Tuesday, according to the Coast Guard. The Francis Scott Key Bridge came down around 1:30 a.m. ET after a cargo ship collided with it.

The Coast Guard said it has ended its active search-and-rescue operation for the missing construction workers who were on the bridge when it collapsed.

  • What we know: Eight people were on the bridge when it fell, according to officials. At least two people were rescued — one was taken to the hospital and has been discharged . The Coast Guard has been searching for six other people. But, around 7:30 p.m. ET, the Coast Guard said it has transitioned to a “different phase” of operation, now it did “not believe we are going to find any of these individuals alive,” Rear Adm. Shannon Gilreath said.
  • About the ship: The bridge collapsed after a container vessel called Dali collided with one of its supports. The vessel is operated by Singapore-based Synergy Group but had been chartered to carry cargo by Danish shipping giant Maersk . The US Embassy in Singapore has been in contact with the country’s Maritime and Port Authority, a State Department spokesperson said.
  • The investigation: The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation into the collapse. A team of 24 experts will dig into nautical operations, vessel operations, safety history records, owners, operators, company policy and any safety management systems or programs, said NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy. A voyage data recorder will be critical to the investigation, she added.
  • Vehicles on the bridge: Officials are also working to verify the numbers of how many cars and people were on the bridge, Homendy said. Gov. Wes Moore said the quick work of authorities in closing the bridge had saved lives . Radio traffic captured how authorities stopped traffic and worked to clear the bridge seconds before the impact . Maryland State Police Secretary Col. Roland L. Butler Jr. said there is a “ distinct possibility ” more vehicles were on the bridge, but authorities have not found any evidence to support that.
  • Looking ahead: NTSB will look into how the bridge was built and investigate the structure itself, including if it was flagged for any safety deficiencies , Homendy said. The federal government has also directed its resources to help with search and rescue, to reopen the port and rebuild the bridge, Vice President Kamala Harris said . Earlier, President Joe Biden said t he federal government will pay to fix the bridge.
  • The economy: Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg warned the collapse will have a serious impact on supply chains . Until the channel is reopened, ships will likely already be changing course for other East Coast ports. Ocean carriers are already being diverted from the Port of Baltimore, where the bridge collapsed, to the Port of Virginia to “keep trade moving."
