The Trip Adviser: Stacy Evos of ‘A Girl’s Gotta Go’
Delivering the latest in style, inspiration, helpful tips and tricks, and everything else you need to know to plan the perfect new england wedding..
Photograph by Adam Detour
After the cake is cut and the bouquet is thrown, life’s next great adventure awaits: your honeymoon. But who has time to deal with booking flights, hotel rooms, and dinner reservations in the midst of all the prewedding chaos? Enter Stacy Evos, president and cofounder of A Girl’s Gotta Go. When Evos launched her Cambridge-based luxury travel agency in 2008, the major focus was on girls’ getaways—mother-daughter trips, bachelorette extravaganzas, milestone birthday bashes—hence the company’s name. But her team found their niche in the romance market after noticing a high demand for wedding-related retreats. “I love making sure a couple has the experience they envision,” Evos says. “It’s really about making people’s dreams come true.”
What are the advantages of using a travel agent versus going it alone?
With so many online booking sites, it can get extremely overwhelming trying to pull off a once-in-a-lifetime honeymoon on your own. That’s where we come in. We’ve been in the industry for years—not just selling travel but also traveling extensively throughout the world ourselves—and have cultivated many wonderful working and personal relationships with preferred partners who can add that “special something” to the experience. We often have access to exclusive promotions and amenities at the hotels and resorts that newlyweds may not receive when booking directly on their own. And we do all the research, so it saves time on the couple’s end—especially when they are so busy planning their wedding.
How do you guide brides and grooms through the process of planning their honeymoon?
We like to do a phone consultation and discuss what they are looking for in terms of destination, style, and activities. Do they want to go somewhere tropical and lay on the beach? Do they want to be able to explore? We send them information and guide them based on their preferences and their budget, then help with the full package: hotel accommodations, airfare, car rental, train tickets, and excursions.
What are the most popular destinations right now?
Tahiti, Greece, and the Greek islands are really hot this year. The Caribbean is always popular, especially for those who can’t take more than a week off. Costa Rica gives you that added adventure, which is nice for couples that want to combine relaxation and activity. And Italy is always in demand.
Are couples still hopping right on the plane after tying the knot?
It’s really a personal preference. Sometimes they want to get on the plane the next day. Other couples still have family in town and want to be around. I advise against leaving the day after the wedding when possible. It’s best to take a day or so off to regroup and relax. Sometimes waiting a few weeks could result in better weather or significant savings. If so, I talk it out with the couple so they know their options.
Is it ever a good idea to visit a destination in the off-season?
It can be. I have worked with couples that were getting married in the winter and wanted to travel somewhere warm, but the rates were highest in the winter. So they decided to postpone their honeymoon and went during an off-peak time. I also let couples know when it’s hurricane season. Many, many people still choose to travel during these times. I strongly recommend that if you do, you get some sort of travel insurance. The weather is the one thing that no one can control.
What if you can’t take an elaborate trip right after the wedding?
A short honeymoon will still give you a few days to celebrate. At a later date, you can go on a longer trip when the timing makes more sense for you, whether it’s when you have more time off from work, better pricing, or better weather.
So what are some good “mini-moon” locations close to home?
Nantucket is one of my favorites. It’s easy to get to, but far enough away to feel like you are on vacation. The island has great beaches, shopping, restaurants, and history. Even the off-season is a nice time to visit. The Berkshires are also popular. There are activities in the area during every season: skiing in the winter and concerts in the summer.
What are some of the most unique destinations you’ve booked?
The Maldives. It’s an exotic, once-in-a-lifetime destination. The water is gorgeous, the diving is great, and there are over-water villas. Mauritius, in the Indian Ocean, is another stunning tropical location. It’s great to combine with a stay in Cape Town.
Is there an ideal honeymoon length?
After planning a wedding, it takes a few days to unwind before you really start enjoying your time. A week is never usually enough. Ten days is a good medium—you’re recharged and ready to head back to the real world.

Less time in flight, more time in paradise. Stacy Evos picks five honeymoon havens that you can reach in five hours or less.
Montreal: The majority of the population speaks French—that in itself makes the city romantic! Stroll down cobblestone streets and visit museums and markets.
Bermuda: After just a two-hour flight, you can be in a tropical paradise. The weather is nice from mid-April through early October.
Denver: Vail, Breckenridge, and Telluride are wonderful honeymoon spots for ski and snowboard enthusiasts. I recommend flying into Denver and staying overnight in the lower altitude before taking the gorgeous drive to the ski resorts.
Riviera Maya: I was just there! The blue skies and turquoise water make it a great vacation spot. You can go on cultural trips to see ruins such as Chichén Itzá and Tulum.
Iceland: Iceland is a great destination for an active couple that loves the outdoors. The best time of year to view the Northern Lights is September through early April.

Why travel to Moscow
Contrasts: 12th century monasteries and some of the tallest skyscrapers in Europe can be found side-by-side in this complex and captivating city. The diversity of this mega-city is astounding. Only a few steps away from the solemn red facade of the Kremlin and the sounds of righteous church bells, a buzzing night scene and alternative-fashion boutiques can be found.
Culture: In Moscow only the best goes. Be it a theatre, restaurant or gallery, the standards are certain to be world-class. The Bolshoi ballet company is reputed to be even better than the Mariinsky’s and “MMOMA” (Moscow’s museum of modern art) exhibits works of art as profound as any that could be found in the famed MOMA.
Convenience: Unlike the rest of Russia, it’s easy enough to get by with just English in Moscow and, driving excepted, it is surprisingly safe: the murder rate is lower than in some of America’s major cities.

Why visit Moscow
It would take more than two days to walk around the perimeter of the biggest city in Europe, Moscow. Many of its inhabitants barely know what’s beyond the few blocks around their flat and there are so many attractions that it’s almost impossible to know where to start. If there is such a thing as an antidote to boredom, Moscow City is it. The mind-boggling range and diversity of things to do, places to eat, parks, historical monuments and more means that a vacation in Moscow has a wealth of activities to offer for every type of traveler, from young families to retirees.
Reasons to Vacation in Moscow in 2022
The Bolshoi theatre is familiar to almost everyone as Russia’s grandest theatre, but what people don’t know is that there are many more bolshoi (big) sites in Moscow that are worth travelling all the way to Moscow to see. For more than 100 years, the world’s biggest bell has been hidden behind the Kremlin’s walls and inside Moscow’s main park (which is bigger than some countries!) there is the world’s largest outdoor ice-rink. Travelers that visit Moscow can stay at the Izmailovo, Europe’s biggest hotel, then eat at the largest and most historic McDonald’s in Europe and after that have fun at the largest European indoor theme park!
Ancient Past & Stunning Architecture:
As those who travel to Moscow will see, just because Moscow is a city of record-breaking, glitzy high-rises doesn’t mean that there is no history. On the famous Arbat street, time-worn, wooden storehouses and century-old churches are squashed up against grey, soviet blocks which are then towered over by 21st century office-blocks. Unlike its much younger sibling, St Petersburg, Moscow’s roots stretch way back to the 12th century. Within the walls of the Kremlin, the city’s oldest building the Cathedral of Assumption can be admired in all its 500+ years of age.
Culture & Convenience
For a foreigner who has never visited Russia, Moscow is the perfect stepping stone into this great land of mystery. From the country’s best classical ballet troupes to snow-white troikas trotting through the parks, all the highlights of Russian culture can be had in Moscow without any of the complications that would be expected in other, less developed regions of Russia.
Cheap as Caviar
In Moscow, everything is bargain when with the current foreign exchange rates being what they are. Even caviar doesn’t seem so dear when the exchange rate is at 60rub to the dollar, so go on indulge yourself! Take your 2022 vacation in Moscow and have the best of both worlds, with European luxury at very affordable prices.
Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.
Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.
We had a great time both in Moscow and St Petersburg. Your travel agency was excellent in coordinating the whole trip. Everything worked like clockwork. The guides assigned to us were very nice and friendly. They had a great knowledge of their subjects. The cars and the drivers were great. The hotels were good and the itinerary was good. All in all, it was a wonderful experience. It was nice dealing with you and your company. Thank you very much for a great Russian experience. Have a great future ahead

I had such a weird interaction with Annette Medina! I reached out with several destinations, flexible dates, and what I thought was a somewhat generous budget ($1500/person) and got a response simply saying "we will not be able to assist you". I wish they had told me why! Are the destinations more expensive than my budget? Are the dates unavailable? I referenced "my partner" - do they not work with same-sex couples? I also said I was open to other destinations - did they not care to look into other destinations for the dates I provided? I would have been happy to increase our budget or look into other destinations - but I guess they didn't care about offering me other options. It just seems so weird that they wouldn't want to work with me. For a company with such good reviews I'm disappointed that they don't want my business. I hope others have a better experience!
Feb 13, 2020
Hi Shannon, We first responded to your initial inquiry by stating that the holiday dates of travel requested combined with the destinations would not be possible on the budget provided per person. When you asked for more detail Annette immediately responded providing what would be a more suitable budget for those dates and destinations and also stated that she would be more than willing to assist if your budget was flexible. We provide travel services to everyone equally and certainly do not discriminate based on a choice of travel partner. As mentioned in Annette's latest email should your budget per person increase we would be willing to schedule a call to discuss further. Sincerely, Stacy Evos
We gave Stacy our budget and some ideas and she created the honeymoon of our dreams. She stretched our money to include activities and luxury while balancing romance and adventure! We traveled for about a month to Fiji, New Zealand, and ending in Tahiti! Everything was seemless and perfect! Her professional planning skills are a must! We can't say enough good things about her communication skills and her responsiveness. She and her team are unsurpassed in their attention to detail! She even surprised us at our last destination, the InterContinental in Bora Bora, with the treat of a delivered breakfast by outrigger with a yukulele serenade! Stacy was there every step of the way. I can't wait to work with her again! Thank you for the amazing honeymoon! Wow!
I was excited to work with this company because their reviews were great. I had a conversation with Annette and was impressed. She asked me for more information and, after talking with my partner, I emailed the information to her and asked her to get back to me. When I didn't hear from her, I called and left a message asking her to get in touch. She didn't. I've been ghosted by a travel agent! Update: Thanks, Stacy. I sent the information through the contact form on your website and didn't get a voicemail from anyone at your office until today, responding to my review. It seems like we're miscommunicating a lot.
Jan 14, 2020
We originally received your request on December 26th, to which Annette responded that day asking to schedule a call to discuss your plans and our services. You responded that you would be discussing with your husband and would get back to us. We are sorry to report that we did not receive your follow up email you have mentioned. We did receive your phone call and message Friday, January 10th in the afternoon to which Annette did return your call and left a message with her direct line as she had appointments that would keep her out of the office the rest of the day. We would certainly like to continue our conversation with you directly. We will be reaching out again this afternoon to hopefully resolve this issue. We apologize for any miscommunication.
Where to even begin: We saw the amazing ratings/testimonials online and decided to book our honeymoon to Scotland with this agency. Everything was great: quick emails informing us of pricing for hotels, costs involved in booking, and so on. We were very happy with how quickly everything was booked. 3 weeks before the trip we asked for all original vouchers to be sent to us via email - silence for 2 full weeks - when we finally hear from her, Stacy emails saying before she hands over the documents she would like to talk via telephone. She informs us that the highlight of our trip: the Jocobite steam train used in Harry Potter (my wife is a huge Harry Potter fan) was never really booked due to a "system error" and so they cannot get us tickets in first class anymore. Also, on the returning journey they cannot get us seats TOGETHER either. We were placed in two different compartments! ON OUR HONEYMOON! The solution: we'll give you the tickets for free instead. We weren't happy with the situation but given that it was the first hiccup we agreed without making a fuss! We get to Isle of Skye and we requested and paid for a sea view room at a luxury property. We are informed that what we actually booked was a standard room overlooking the car park. What's worse, you can look into the room from the car park! So we shoot her an email, pretty upset with this situation and she tries to convince us that the room we are allowed is what was discussed! By this point we have had enough of this nonsense and we leave the property and demand a refund (which we thankfully received given that it was not what was booked). Isle of Skye was gorgeous except in peek season there was NO ACCOMMODATION available on the island. We booked an Airbnb and had to hop from one place to another for the different nights! I would strongly advise people to do their research BEFORE using this travel agency as their attitude can be quite deceitful. Had we not checked, we would have been made to stay in a cheaper room, all the while paying for a sea view room. Also, make sure your seats are together on trains/buses. I hope no other person has to go through the crap we had to go through on our honeymoon! Stacy ensured it was one we would remember and regret! My wife and I are discussing how we need another holiday to get over the horror of this one!

Dear Kushnoo, We are sorry that your experience was anything less than exceptional. We completely agree that the Jacobite train booking system issue was extremely unfortunate. It is not a train that we book regularly, so we can not speak to the frequency of the issue. However, it is important to understand that upon learning of the issue, we were able to negotiate a full refund of the tickets for you from the vendor along with seats on the day and time we had originally requested. When you asked additional compensation over the cost of the tickets, our agency paid the difference to match the total refund you requested. The Isle of Skye booking is also a regrettable mis-communication in terms of the room type, description that was provided between hotel communications with the Agency and included in your itinerary. We understand the room was not as expected but do want to assure that the rate paid was not the Sea View rate. We also did work with the hotel on providing you a refund for the 2 nights you chose not to stay. As you stated at the beginning of your review, we always try to be extremely communicative. We strive to provide the best service and experience for all our clients, as reflected in the reviews posted. As we advised in our last email communication, we were hoping to follow up further with you directly once you returned. We would still welcome the opportunity to do so. Thank you
With so much going on planning the wedding, our honeymoon plans could easily have become another stressful detail. Working with Annette and the team at A Girls Gotta Go helped us to plan our dream vacation. We would recommend AGG to anyone that needed help to plan a vacation or honeymoon.
We just got back a few days ago from our amazing vacation in Costa Rica! Stacy was seriously a life saver. We were supposed to take off Saturday March 3rd from Boston Logan, but got hit with the first Nor'easter of March!! My fiancé and I were freaking out and contacted Stacy as soon as our flight was cancelled. She was amazingly helpful in contacting the airline and the two resorts in Costa Rica we were staying at and was able to switch everything for us (even our excursions we had booked!) from a Saturday to Saturday vacation to a Sunday-Sunday. As for the planning of the vacation, I told Stacy everything we were looking for and wanted to do and she sent us a few sample itineraries. Then we were able to mix and match everything we wanted. We ended up doing an amazingly beautiful hotel near Arenal volcano with a hiking tour, ATV's and white water rafting. And then switched to an all-inclusive resort on the beach to relax. Best vacation thus far.
I spent on / off about 10 years of my last 16 years traveling for work. So, I consider myself a travel expert and never really thought I would have the need for a travel agent. However, the most important trip of my life is coming up, our honeymoon, so I took the plunge and tried A Girls Gotta Go. I mean, I needed to ensure I wasn't the one rebooking flights, rooms, etc if mother nature decides to mess things up! So reluctantly, I emailed Stacy and gave her some notes in terms of hotels and flights I wanted. Yes, I did much of the planning, but it was nice to see someone who saw my point of view and made sure every specific request was figured out and planned for. I really appreciated her patience in my relentless emails as I am a detail oriented person and she ensured all my details were taken cared of on the booking. Our trip is not until this August, but we are very excited and feel confident that it's going to be the best two weeks of our lives in Hawaii. I'll make sure to update this review once we get back from our trip. Thanks again Stacy for being so up for dealing with our specific requests!
I found A Girl's Gotta Go on Yelp, and despite the name, they also help plan trips for GUYS too. The last time I had used a travel agent, the year started with a "1" (over 15 years ago for the slow ones). We worked with Stacy at A Girl's Gotta Go to help us plan our honeymoon. We gave her a few clues of what we wanted to do, and less than a month before we went wheels up. Because of the complexity, unfamiliarity with where we were going, and tight timeframe, using a travel agent sounded like a good idea. But finding one is surprisingly difficult! Thanks to Yelp for being the only source that was helpful! Stacy figured out exactly what we wanted and got back to us in a few days with a couple of sample itineraries. Back and forth a few times to get the details right and we were booked. Our trip had a bunch of different hotels, a bunch of different flights, and a transfer each time. Everything was great and everything was smooth. We did have one transfer that had some mis-communication and we explained the issue with Stacy when we got back, and she quickly "made the situation right". I found that there are reasons to use a travel agent in these modern times, and when I do, I'll use A Girl's Gotta Go.
Alin Halajian at "A Girls Gotta Go" made our special day possible! She handled all the details, both big and small! I highly recommend her to anybody looking to have a destination wedding of their own!
Alin made our family trip to Aruba completely hassle free. She took care of everything and did not have to worry about a thing. Our vacation in Aruba was absolutely fabulous It was everything, plus more than I had ever imagined! It was spectacular and we all loved it. We will definitely be using A Girl's Gotta Go travel agency again for our next trip. Alin was wonderful, very pleasant, patient and provided us with multiple recommendations on the island. She never steered us wrong. Thank you Alin!

At the top of his hosting duties, Brolin reminded viewers that it had been 12 years since he last hosted the NBC late-night show.
“I’ve missed this place. So much has changed,” he said. “Not really, it’s the same but the band, a couple of guys… anyway, it all seems different but it’s the same.”
Brolin said that when he first hosted the musical, the guest was someone he had never heard of before, Adele, noting that “now she’s a global superstar.”
“The second time I hosted, the musical guest was Gotye,” he said. “And now, he’s just someone that I used to know .”

Since the last time Brolin hosted SNL , the actor said he has dedicated time to writing a “creepy poem about Timothée Chalamet.”
“Your face is etched by adolescence,” Brolin read his poem about Chalamet. “Your cheekbones jut what are youth laden eyes that slide down a prominent nose and onto lips of a certain poetry.”

Is New York City Back? Not for Everyone.
The city has rebounded from the worst of the coronavirus pandemic in meaningful ways. But the recovery is incomplete and uneven.
By Emma G. Fitzsimmons and Jeffery C. Mays
Nearly four years after the coronavirus pandemic hit, New York City is back in many ways.
As of September, New York City had the most jobs ever recorded. Tourism has mostly rebounded, with 62 million visitors last year. Subway ridership is still short of prepandemic levels, but has risen to nearly four million on weekdays. The number of murders fell under 400 last year for the first time since 2019.
Tax revenue projections were $1.3 billion higher than expected for the current fiscal year, allowing Mayor Eric Adams to rescind midyear budget cuts that would have affected nearly every city agency. This year’s Wall Street bonuses are expected to be slightly higher than last year’s, according to the state comptroller’s office, which would funnel more tax revenue to the city than expected.
“We’re not surviving — we are thriving in this city,” Mr. Adams said at a recent news conference celebrating the city’s strong bond rating.
The recovery of New York City, the nation’s financial capital, is critical to the American economy and to the eight million people who call the city home.
But the recovery is incomplete and uneven. Multibillion-dollar budget deficits loom in each of the next few years, in part because of the migrant influx that city officials say will cost $10 billion over three years. Office building vacancies are still plentiful in a new era of hybrid work.
And in many parts of New York, especially among the working class, it does not feel like the city is back on its feet. The poverty rate has soared to 23 percent , up from 18 percent in 2021. Demand for food stamps and cash assistance has surged. The housing crunch is the worst it has been in more than 50 years , with a rental vacancy rate of only 1.4 percent. Even life expectancy remained below prepandemic levels , according to the Health Department.
Roughly 41 percent of voters were “very dissatisfied” with the way things were going in New York City, according to a Quinnipiac University poll in December — the highest level since the poll began asking voters that question in 1997.
The next year will reveal the durability of the recovery and shed more light on Mr. Adams’s priorities as he confronts the city’s many pressing challenges, including managing the arrival of more than 180,000 migrants and the end of generous federal pandemic aid.
Many business leaders have been pleased by the city’s economic rebound, and the mayor’s focus on public safety and stimulating the city’s economy, even as concerns over the commercial real estate industry persist . They share Mr. Adams’s view that helping businesses thrive is essential to the city’s comeback.
“The only way we’re going to be able to support the increase in people on public assistance and the costs of the migrant crisis is if we continue to see economic growth in the city,” said Kathryn Wylde, president of the Partnership for New York City, a business group. “The mayor has to be a reassuring champion of the city’s future.”
On this front, the mayor has given mixed messages. Mr. Adams, a Democrat, was elected partly by accentuating everything that was wrong with New York City, including a surge in crime during the pandemic. Even as mayor, he has been known for gloomy assessments like his warning that the migrant crisis would “destroy New York City .”
In recent months, Mr. Adams has begun to strongly emphasize the positive. “I can say with confidence, New York City isn’t coming back — New York City is back,” he said at a news conference last week.
But some of the city’s economic achievements tell a more nuanced story.
The median rent for an apartment in Manhattan has steadily increased , to $4,150 in January, up 1.3 percent from the year before — a trend that conveys confidence in the city’s future, but also underscores the affordability crisis.
Even with more people physically returning to work, the office occupancy rate is still roughly 50 percent of prepandemic levels by one measure, raising alarm in the commercial real estate industry. The city’s hotel occupancy rate rose by 6.6 percentage points last year, the largest gain in the nation among major markets, according to an industry study . But some of that increase comes from the city’s use of hotels for migrants, accounting for roughly 16,000 rooms.
And while the city gained 54,900 private sector jobs last year, much of the growth has been in low-wage sectors, like home health aides, and most wage gains have been for the highest earners, said James Parrott, the director of economic and fiscal policy at the Center for New York City Affairs at the New School.
“The economic rebound we’ve had hasn’t been one that’s lifted all boats,” Mr. Parrott said.
Mr. Adams, who is running for re-election next year and facing a federal investigation into his campaign fund-raising, has insisted that he is focused on working class New Yorkers. He has highlighted an expansion of earned-income tax credits and child care vouchers, among other policies.
Charles Lutvak, a spokesman for the mayor, said in a statement that Mr. Adams was setting the foundation for a strong and equitable recovery.
“We have always been clear that there is more work to do, and our administration is continuing to deliver progress so that hard-working New Yorkers feel the benefits of a safer, more prosperous, and more livable city,” he said.
Difficult decisions loom. Thomas P. DiNapoli, the state comptroller, said in a new report on Thursday that while the city’s economic outlook had improved, its budget gaps were higher than the city’s forecasts at $11.3 billion in 2026.
“New York City’s finances were boosted by better-than-projected revenues and planned savings, but out-year budget gaps are still large and tough choices remain ahead to fund essential education programs and social services,” he said.
Some New Yorkers fear that Mr. Adams will continue to cut funds for essential city services, especially those most relied on by lower-income families like free preschool and libraries. He had called for severe midyear budget reductions to the police, fire, education, parks and sanitation departments, but rescinded some of those cuts in January when the city’s tax revenue came in higher than projected.
Andrew Rein, the president of the Citizens Budget Commission, an independent fiscal watchdog, said that the city still needed to “rein in spending,” and called for Mr. Adams to have an “honest and transparent discussion” with New Yorkers about what services must be curtailed or ended .
More than 50 percent of working families in New York City cannot afford to pay for their basic needs, according to a recent report by the Fund for the City of New York and United Way . Evictions are rising again .
City agencies are short staffed, leading to troubling delays. Only 14 percent of applications for cash assistance were processed within the legally mandated 30-day window during a four-month period last year, according to the Mayor’s Management Report. The timeliness rate was more than 95 percent in 2019. The mayor’s office announced on Monday that it had significantly reduced the delays after hiring 1,000 staffers since January 2023 to process applications.
There is also the question of whether New Yorkers feel safe. The city has seen a drop in murders that is part of a national trend, though some crime categories are still high, including car thefts .
In the West Bronx, a predominantly Black and Latino neighborhood that Mr. Adams won in the 2021 Democratic primary, residents liked the mayor’s message and “see themselves” in his working-class upbringing, said Pierina Sanchez, a city councilwoman.
But they are also worried about violence and quality of life. A man was killed recently in the subway in Ms. Sanchez’s district. A 1-year-old died in September after being exposed to fentanyl at a home day care . There are also concerns over school budget cuts and the mayor’s refusal to expand a housing voucher program intended to reduce homelessness.
“ It’s counterintuitive,” Ms. Sanchez said of the mayor’s stance on housing vouchers. “We voted for you en masse. You say you represent us. We need this, and you’re not supportive of it.”
At Montefiore Square, a park in West Harlem, neighbors are frustrated about open-air drug dealing and the grounds littered with used hypodermic needles and trash.
At a recent community meeting about the conditions at the park, several residents said they were fearful of the area. Cary Rose, the captain of the 30th Precinct, said officers had been present at the park almost 700 times from January to late February in an effort to address the problems there.
Local businesses are forming a merchants association because they are worried about violence, said Quenia Abreu, president of the New York Women’s Chamber of Commerce. She said she was nearly hit in the head with a bat recently when two men began fighting near a Dunkin’ across from the park.
Shaun Abreu, a local councilman who campaigned with Mr. Adams at the park, said the mayor’s upbeat message of “crime is down and jobs are up” did not reflect reality.
“In West Harlem,” Mr. Abreu said, “I don’t think that message would resonate.”
