Russia Welcomes 20% More Tourists in 2019

russia tourist numbers

Tourist arrivals to Russia have surged by 20.5% in 2019, according to official figures cited by the Association of Tour Operators of Russia (ATOR) on Monday.

More than 5 million tourists visited Russia in January-December 2019, according to ATOR’s breakdown of Federal Security Service (FSB) border service data, up from 4.2 million tourists the previous year. The numbers come as Russia moves to simplify  visa requirements for citizens of 53 countries next year and boost its tourism revenue.

Country-specific figures showed increasing tourist arrivals in Russia from all continents except Latin America. The top five countries where tourists came from remained unchanged since 2018.

China supplied the highest share of inbound visitors at 1.5 million tourists, an increase of 19% from 2018. Russia has introduced visa-free travel for Chinese tour groups and hired Chinese-speaking staff at airports and train stations to accommodate the surge.

Germany accounted for the second-most visitors with more than 520,000 tourists, an increase of 15.7% from 2018. South Korea contributed the third-most visitors at more than 413,000 tourists, an increase of 20.8% from 2018.

The United States came in fourth with 241,000 American tourists last year, up by 6% from 2018.

Israel rounded out the top five with 199,000 inbound tourists, an increase of 21.7% in a year.

Almost 33 million foreigners visited Russia overall, not only for tourism.

Is it possible to visit Russia as a tourist in 2023?

russia tourist numbers

Yes, traveling to Russia as a tourist in 2023 is possible. Here’s what to look out for if you’re preparing for your dream trip.

Visa requirements

First things first, it is worth checking if you need a visa to cross the Russian border. In 2023, citizens of some 65 countries can visit Russia without a visa. This includes most of the post-Soviet states like Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, as well as Ukraine.

Additionally, citizens of some countries in South and Central America – including Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Panama, Peru, Venezuela, Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Uruguay, Ecuador – do not need a visa to travel to Russia.

Citizens of Israel, South Africa, Cuba, Montenegro, Thailand, South Korea, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Andorra, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Mongolia, Botswana enjoy visa-free regime with Russia, too.

Is it safe to travel to Russia right now?

Russia as a travel destination received a fair share of negative PR from various sources in early 2022.

Some official travel accounts run by governments of countries like the U.S. , Australia , Great Britain and others advise their citizens to abstain from non-essential travel to the country.

That said, it is always advisable to evaluate safety risks when traveling to any foreign country. Traveling to Russia is no exception. However, Moscow, St. Petersburg and other major Russian cities have been widely regarded as being safe , especially in comparison to other popular tourist destinations.

Little has changed in major Russian cities from the point of view of tourists or local residents. Consequently, the most extreme and vocal concerns over security may be disregarded as being too alarmist.

That said, logistics pose the greatest challenge for tourists traveling to Russia in 2023. A number of countries closed their national airspace for Russian air companies resulting in more complicated logistics for tourists who intend to visit Russia in 2023.

However, specific changes depend on a particular country from where a tourist departs. In some cases, direct flight routes remain intact. For example, nothing has changed for tourists from China, India, Turkey, Middle Eastern countries and the majority of post-Soviet states. They can book direct flights to Russia’s main airports.

Tourists departing from European capitals will have to book connecting flights via Turkey or countries in the Middle East. This makes tickets more expensive and flights longer. However, it is still possible to travel to Russia from virtually any country in the world.

It should be noted that every country has its own nuances that must be taken into account beforehand. For example, the Indian Embassy in Russia advises Indian nationals against traveling to Russia via third countries. According to the embassy website, Indian travelers should choose only direct flights from Delhi to Moscow, otherwise they risk being denied entry into Russia.

In another instance, the British government prohibited its citizens from purchasing tickets on Russian airlines that were under sanctions. Nonetheless, the British authorities made an exception for those journeys originating in or within Russia: in this case, British nationals may purchase tickets from Russian companies without breaching UK sanctions.

Covid restrictions, vaccination status & quarantine

In 2022, Russian authorities canceled Covid-related restrictions for Russian citizens and foreign tourists, alike.

In 2023, foreign nationals no longer need to provide results of a negative PCR test when entering Russia by any mode of transport. Therefore, foreign travelers no longer need to take a coronavirus test in advance before departure.

Furthermore, Russian authorities lifted Covid-related restrictions that required visitors to provide a specific reason for visiting the country facilitating tourist traveling.

The only remaining Covid-related regulation is a requirement to fill in a questionnaire. Passengers – both Russian and foreign citizens – will be asked to fill out the paper version of the questionnaire on board during their flight to Russia.

The beginning of 2022 and the events that took place during this period of time significantly affected the Russian market as a whole. The tourism sector was no exception. Various nuances and challenges with visiting some countries, blocking the work of many foreign services in Russia, etc. - all these factors adversely affected the market. But also there were also advantages associated with the development of new tourist destinations.

Let's talk about it in more detail.

RMAA specialists, who constantly monitor the market situation, have found out what awaits the tourism industry in the current 2022 and what trends are most relevant for the industry.

Subscribe to our digest of the Russian travel market and get up-to-date business data.

The beginning of 2021 vs the beginning of 2022.

At the beginning of the year, the Border Service of the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation released some numbers on traveling of Russians abroad in the period from January to March 2022. According to their calculations, at that time citizens of the Russian Federation made 3,880,679 trips abroad for various purposes. This figure is much higher than in the same period of 2021 (2,644,444 trips). However, the traveling flow is still much lower than the pre-pandemic indicators.

russia tourist numbers

Source: Digest of the Russian travel market , Q1 2022

The obvious reason for such increase compared to the last year was the removal or mitigation of covid restrictions for tourists on entry. Thanks to this, new destinations have been opened for Russians (closed in 2021). First of all, the most popular of them were far abroad countries. The number of trips for this destination increased by 77.2% and reached 2,157,346 (there were 1,217,134 in 2021). Much lower increase was seen for trips to the countries of the “post-Soviet space”: +19.1% (1,447,118 trips) compared to the same period in 2021.

russia tourist numbers

Delving into the statistics of the Border Service of the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation, you can see that in 2022 the list of the most visited countries for Russians increased by several positions compared to 2021.

At the same time:

  • Turkey and the UAE are still the leaders;
  • Egypt, the Dominican Republic, Thailand, Hungary and Mexico have been added to the list of popular destinations;
  • but Tanzania, which closed its borders at the beginning of 2022 due to an increase in the incidence of covid_19, turned out to be inaccessible for entry. However, now the government of the country is gradually beginning to ease restrictions on entry of Russian tourists. Perhaps, by the end of 2022, the number of tourists from Russia in this destination will increase again.

The reasons for such indicators can be explained by natural changes. Experts note high percentages of growth in a number of destinations, again, due to the opening of borders, as well as the launch of charter flights and an increase in regular air transportation. For example, in 2021, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Hungary and Thailand were closed. During the same period, there were no direct flights to Egypt, charter flights to Cuba, and the cost of a flight to the UAE was much more expensive due to quotas. At the beginning of 2022, a number of countries managed to solve these problems, thanks to which the flow of incoming tourists increased again.

The only popular destination that lost a significant part of the tourist flow from Russia (-22.4%) was Turkey. Experts note that Russians started active travel season to this region from March for several years in a row. However, this year the influx of Russian tourists was reduced due to sanctions restrictions and rising prices for air transportation at that period of time.

A completely different situation exists with regard to the “post-Soviet” destination. As a rule, visits of Russians to these countries are non-tourist. For example, during the period from January to March 2022, the increase in the number of trips to Uzbekistan and Armenia amounted to 249% and 200% correspondingly. This is mainly due to the March jump in “debit-card tours”, the purpose of which is, rather, business and personal requests of citizens.

When it comes to the volume of business trips abroad in general, then at the beginning of 2022 they increased by 68% compared to the same period in 2021. In addition, the list of countries to be visited for such purposes has changed. For example, Turkey is found to be in second place in 2022, behind Estonia. Plus, Spain and Serbia appeared in the ranking, while Poland and Switzerland turned out to be unpopular destinations for business tours among Russians in 2022.

Decline in Interest to European Destinations Among Russians

This conclusion was made by the European Travel Commission (ETC) based on the results of a study of the “Long-Haul Travel Barometer” (LHTB), which shows traveller sentiment for the summer period from May to June of the current year. Moreover, this expert examination is carried out every 4 months in six countries, which have the status of long-haul markets in relation to the EU (Brazil, Canada, USA, China and Russia).

According to an analysis from LHTB published in the second quarter of 2022, interest in trips to Europe, in general, remains weak for all of the above countries for a number of reasons. This can include worsening economic development, covid restrictions, geopolitical shocks and, as a result, high travel costs for European destination.

At the same time, ETC experts point out that in Brazil, Canada and the USA, all these factors have a limited impact on tourists. But in the case of China and Russia, everything is much more complicated. Because Russian and Chinese tourists are much more pessimistic about the prospects to travel to the European destination in the near future.

Moreover, the desire of Russians to go to Europe has reached the lowest level in the entire history of ETC observations (78 points). This indicator turned out to be significantly worse than the level recorded during imposition of the first covid restrictions in the period from May to August 2020.

Russians gave the following most relevant reasons not to travel:

  • 24% of respondents do not want to travel anywhere outside Russia;
  • 13% of respondents stated high travel cost to European destinations;
  • 10% of respondents expressed concerns about anti-Russian sentiments of European citizens;
  • 9% of respondents mentioned negative impact of the political situation as a whole;
  • 4% of respondents would like to go to Europe, but the desired countries have been closed to them during the current period;
  • 3% of respondents do not have the ability to bypass the current sanctioned financial restrictions (inability to use credit /debit cards, etc.);
  • 2% of respondents mentioned lack of direct flights to the desired countries, as well as concerns about travelling due to covid_19.

However, 20% of the examined Russians reported that they would be able to consider a European destination for leisure this summer. A year ago, there were 39% of such citizens. Also, 7% of Russian respondents are ready to visit European countries, but not in the current period. Respondents named beach holidays (51%), visits to various cities (32%), national parks and mountains (17%), rural areas (7%) as one of the main reasons for traveling to Europe. It should be noted that while making this research, ETC experts included Turkey in the list of European countries, which has been a priority destination for Russians for several years. Most likely, the LHTB indicators for Russian sentiment would be even smaller without it.

russia tourist numbers

Source: ETC, Long-haul travel barometer 2/2022

Other countries that Russian travellers would like to visit in Europe turned out to be Italy (15%), Cyprus (14%), Germany (12%), Greece (11%), Spain and Austria (10%), Bulgaria (9%), Finland and France (8%), and also Serbia and Montenegro (7%), which appeared for the first time in this study.

To sum up the LHTB findings analysis, it should be mentioned that 3% of respondents from Russia are ready to completely exclude the European region from their tourist route. In this connection, a logical question arises - what destinations have become preferred for Russians in the second quarter of 2022?

Summer Routes of Russian Tourists in 2022

The ATOR Analytical Service, based on the sales statistics of Russian tour operators for three summer months of 2022, distinguished the leading directions of the tourism market. Turkey and domestic tourism have become obvious favorites (which is a stable trend for the Russian market). However, there are other interesting facts in the report that are worth paying attention to.

The main one of them can be considered a decline in the package tour market in Russia by 20% compared to the summer of 2021. This includes both European destinations and domestic tourism. In general, the main reason for this trend is the low availability of direct air transportation. In other words, Russians prefer more accessible destinations for travel.

With reference to this conclusion, such regions turned out to be:

Turkey, ranking first in the sales structure of most Russian tour operators. Moreover, the main share of summer bookings (about 90%) falls on the resorts of Antalya (Alanya, Belek, Kemer, Side). Analysts note that the average price of a sold tour to Turkey ranges from 160 - 210 thousand rubles, and the average duration of rest is 7-12 nights.

Abkhazia is also one of the leaders in tour sales for most operators. In addition, the growth of booking of Abkhazian resorts in 2022 is steadily growing compared to the same period in 2021. The average price of tours (preferably without a flight) is about 50 - 60 thousand rubles per week.

UAE - sales growth for this destination is mainly due to the closing a large number of foreign destinations. According to ATOR, tours to the UAE turned out to be the most sold by Space Travel, Russian Express, and also entered the TOP 5 by ANEX Tour and PAC Group. The average price for 7 nights in the Emirates is about 160 - 230 thousand rubles. Plus, Russians prefer comfort-enhancing leisure for this destination.

Egypt - as in the case with the AOE, they choose it due to restrictions on many European destinations. By the summer of 2022, Goa charter flights to the region from Russia were opened by three tour operators at once (Biblio-Globus, Fun-Sun, TEZ Tour), which provided a large influx of Russians. The average price of one-week tour to Egypt is estimated at about 150 thousand rubles.

Maldives - tour packages to this region are in great demand among operators that are not able to provide charter flights to Egypt. Plus, the Maldives attracts Russians in the summer of 2022 with the presence of premium holidays, discounts and the appearance of a direct flight from the Aeroflot Russian Airlines .

The following destinations also entered the TOP popular tourist regions for Russians in the summer of 2022 (mainly due to the appearance of charter flights): Thailand, Sri Lanka (there is direct transportation), Seychelles, some European countries (Italy, France,Georgia, Croatia and Hungary) and exotic regions opened after covid restrictions (Malaysia, Nepal, Indonesia, Singapore and South Korea).

All this tells us that when choosing a summer vacation, Russians prefer regions according to two main criteria. The first of them is accessibility and availability of a convenient route, and the second is increased comfort conditions. Besides, market experts mentioned other important trends concerning search queries and the use of tourist resources.

Advertising in the Travel Industry: Services and New Approaches

In the period from February 24 to March 24, 2022, Online Market Intelligence (OMi) published a report on changes in the media consumption of Russians resulting from the blocking of many foreign services. Including - tourist one. One of these was the platform Booking.com . It should be noted that Russians used these services both for Russian tours and for foreign ones.

russia tourist numbers

Source:  Online Market Intelligence (OMi), wave 1

According to the research findings, the number of Booking.com users decreased by 27% during the month and it was only 9% of the total number of the interviewed respondents by the end of March. At the same time, most Russians have started using “domestic” travel platforms (Yandex Travel, Avito, Travel.ru etc.). It goes without saying that the “cancellation” of the Booking.com service affected the entire hotel booking system.

Valentin Miklyaev, CEO of Bnovo (Russian company developing IT solutions for hotel booking), in an interview with Novy Prospekt shared the following conclusions: “75% of the small hotel room capacity in Russia have used only Booking or Airbnb so far. That is, a huge number of accommodation facilities did not have other channels of booking and lived with this stream for many years. Of course, when these channels were closed, the hotels were confused, and literally in one day we received an annual volume of requests from them. Everyone is trying to find alternatives.”

In addition to the rejection of foreign tourist systems, the trend in favor of “domestic” resources can be traced when choosing information projects about tourism. The TOP 10 in Russia includes Russian services-travel guides, platforms and magazines for independent travelers.

Despite the decline in sales on the package tours market, requests for this product in Russia have been increased. According to Yandex Wordstat analytics, Russians have entered a querry "buy a tour” by 66% more frequently than in 2021.

Main Conclusions

The tourism market in Russia (both foreign and domestic) remains a promising niche. Because Russians are still interested in travelling abroad, premium tours to various destinations and new leisure formats. In 2022, the European region lost its leading position (except Turkey). While due to the removal of restrictions and appearance of direct or charter flights, Russians became interested in traveling on new routes.

The channels of communication with customers within the segment have also changed. If earlier Russians used foreign services to book hotels and buy tickets, now most of the audience has replaced them with domestic resources.

Consequently, promotion in the tourism sector requires from advertisers to use new tools and approaches, taking into account all of the above factors. Entrust this task to RMAA experts who always follow the latest market trends. And they know how to attract customers from Russia who prefer comfortable leisure abroad.

Latvia extends an entry ban on Russian tourists until March 2025 citing Moscow’s war in Ukraine

HELSINKI (AP) — Latvia’s government has extended restrictions on the entry of Russian citizens into the Baltic country until next year, citing Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine which officials say is “still posing a threat to the internal security of Latvia.”

The Cabinet of Prime Minister Evika Siliņa decided Tuesday to lengthen the entry conditions on Russian citizens until March 4, 2025.

Russian citizens will continue to be banned from entering Latvia, a European Union country, for the purposes of tourism and leisure, the government said in a statement.

However, some Russians will be permitted to enter, including those with residence permits valid in Latvia or another EU member state, or Russians whose entry is related to humanitarian considerations like political dissidents.

In September 2022, Poland and the Baltic states — Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania — reached a joint agreement to restrict the numbers of Russian citizens coming to their countries to prevent alleged security risks amid Russia’s war in nearby Ukraine.

NATO member Latvia, a country of 1.9 million people that borders Russia, is home to a sizable ethnic Russian minority that makes up about 25% of the country’s population. The Baltic Sea nation previously has been a popular vacation venue and its capital, Riga, a popular weekend destination for Russian tourists.

Middle East latest: Two sailors killed in attack on ship - with vessel drifting on fire

The British embassy in Yemen has confirmed the deaths of two sailors in a Houthi attack on a ship in the Gulf of Aden. Meanwhile, Lord Cameron has met Israeli minister Benny Gantz in London, warning him the UK's patience is wearing thin over the "dreadful suffering" in Gaza.

Lord David Cameron has described what he called a "tough but necessary" discussion with Israeli war cabinet minister Benny Gantz in London today.

"I made clear the steps Israel must take to increase aid into Gaza, and the UK's deep concern about the prospect of a military offensive in Rafah," Lord Cameron said.

"These are tough but necessary conversations," he added.

Lord Cameron said yesterday he would tell Mr Gantz that patience was running thin over the "dreadful suffering" in Gaza.

Mr Gantz reportedly earned the fury of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu by embarking on a tour of Israeli allies, including the UK and US, without his permission.

These images show Palestinians returning to their shattered homes in Khan Younis, southern Gaza.

The area has seen some of the most intense fighting of the war and a continuing air campaign above the city has left many residential streets devastated.

These Palestinians have returned to recover what they can from from their homes.

The Israel Defence Forces claims it has killed a Hamas operative responsible for firing rockets at Israeli troops from central Gaza.

"[Omar Atiya Daruish] Aladdiny was a Hamas operative for several decades, responsible for embedding its rocket arsenal in Gaza and firing rockets at Israel since 2008," the IDF said in a statement.

Israel claimed Aladdiny a "central" role in the massive rocket barrage unleashed across the border on 7 October that preceded an armed incursion.

"During the war, he directed rocket launches toward Israeli civilian areas, including Tel Aviv and communities in southern Israel, and was responsible for heavy fire directed at IDF ground troops in Gaza," the IDF said.

It shared video purporting to show the airstrike that killed Aladdiny, though neither the claims nor the footage have been independently verified.

Our international affairs editor Dominic Waghorn is offering his immediate thoughts on the deaths of two sailors in a Houthi missile attack on a commercial ship in the Gulf of Aden.

"This is a significant and grave development," he says.

"The Houthis have been attacking shipping for some months now, but this is the first time that they have killed people, it seems."

There are conflicting reports on the number killed, he says, with some outlets suggesting three people had been killed - and no details on the nationality of the sailors.

"The Americans say their Navy is in attendance trying to rescue the crew and stabilise the vessel," Waghorn says.

He asks why the Houthis attacked True Confidence when it is Greek-owned and Barbadian-flagged - with the group claiming to only attack Israeli, British or US ships.

"There are reports that [True Confidence] was owned by an American company based in Los Angeles," he says.

"So it could be an old record that the Houthis have seen, [or maybe they] misidentified the ship and therefore attacked it."

He sums up the significance of the day's events within the wider context of the troubles in the Red Sea and surrounding waters.

"This follows weeks of airstrikes led by the US but also with the British RAF involved as well," he says.

"They were designed to degrade and deter these attacks.

"Frankly, the opposite is happening - they are escalating."

Watch: Missile strike on Houthi targets

Two people are dead after a Houthi attack on a ship in the Gulf of Aden, the British embassy in Yemen has confirmed.

They are the first people to die in Houthi attacks on shipping.

"At least two innocent sailors have died," a statement read.

"This was the sad but inevitable consequence of the Houthis recklessly firing missiles at international shipping.

"They must stop. Our deepest condolences are with the families of those that have died and those that were wounded."

The Barbados-flagged True Confidence was hit by a missile about 50 nautical miles southwest of the Yemeni port of Aden.

The ship has been abandoned, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations, and lifeboats have been seen in the water, according to an anonymous US defence official.

The Houthis have claimed responsibility for the attack, falsely claiming True Confidence is American-owned.

A suspected attack by Yemen's Houthi rebels on a ship in the Gulf of Aden has caused "fatalities", two US officials have told Associated Press.

Another shipping source told Reuters news agency that three sailors were missing and four others were badly burned.

The Barbados-flagged True Confidence is no longer under the command of the crew and has been abandoned, the British military’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations centre said separately.

The extent of the damage remains unclear, but it appears to be serious.

True Confidence was hit by a missile about 50 nautical miles southwest of the Yemeni port of Aden.

The ship's owner and operator said the bulk carrier is drifting with a fire continuing onboard.

Yemen's Houthi rebels have not yet claimed the attack.

In a tent city constructed around Rafah, Palestinian families are sheltering on the sands near the border with Egypt.

With Israel having carried out ground offensives in much of the rest of the territory, the southern city now hosts approximately 1.5 million people.

Israel has continued to bomb Rafah and threatens to launch an offensive against four Hamas battalions it says are based there, but the international community has heavily criticised the plans due to the dense civilian population.

A bit more on that reported explosion near Yemen earlier (see 11.50am post).

Smoke has been seen rising from the Barbados-flagged bulk carrier True Confidence off Yemen's southern coast near Aden, a US defence official has told the Reuters news agency.

The official, who wished to remain anonymous, said a lifeboat had also been seen in the water near the ship, without providing further details.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency reported earlier that a merchant vessel had been damaged in an attack south of Yemen and coalition forces were supporting it.

An entity declaring itself to be the "Yemeni Navy" ordered the ship to alter course 57 nautical miles southwest of Aden, British security firm Ambrey said.

These images show smoke rising over Gaza as Israel keeps up its bombardment.

They were taken from southern Israel and show a view across the border, though the exact area of Gaza is not specified.

Israel continues to pound targets across the enclave on a daily basis, with the IDF detailing strikes on Beit Hanoun, in the north, and central Khan Younis, in southern Gaza.

The EU is exploring the possibility of a maritime humanitarian aid corridor via Cyprus.

European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen will travel to meet with the president of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, on Friday.

The government of the island, located south of Turkey and west of Syria, has campaigned for months for the creation of a sustained, one-way sea route carrying aid directly to Gaza.

It is the closest European Union member state to the region, located 230 miles northwest of Gaza.

"Our efforts are focused on making sure that we can provide aid to Palestinians. We all hope that this opening [of the corridor] will take place very soon," said Ms von der Leyen's spokesperson.

Putin appears unstoppable, but even he 'doesn't know where the tolerance of the Russian people lies,' an economic historian said

  • Russia's economy appears resilient amid its war with Ukraine which has entered its third year.
  • But it's uncertain if the Russians themselves can put up with the impact from the war for much longer, an economic historian told The Guardian.
  • Military spending has reached 40% of Russia's budget, overshadowing social spending.

Insider Today

Russia's economy appears resilient after more than two years of war with Ukraine — but even the Russian people themselves may be getting impatient with the situation, an expert says.

Moscow has ramped up military spending this year, devoting around 40% of its budget to defense and security.

So while life in Russia appears to retain its normality, "Putin doesn't know any more than we do where the tolerance of the Russian people lies," Mark Harrison, an economic historian and emeritus professor at Warwick University, told The Guardian in a report on Saturday.

"The process of feeling for those limits is different for an authoritarian leader because he knows the people won't tell him, or at least not until it is too late for his leadership to survive," Harrison added to the media outlet.

Despite sweeping Western sanctions over the invasion of Ukraine, Russia posted a GDP growth of 3.6% in 2023 after contracting 1.2% in 2022. The International Monetary Fund expects the economy to continue growing and rise 2.6% in 2024.

Experts say Russia's growth is driven primarily by war spending and subsidies. This means few benefits from the growth are trickling down to the regular Russian person.

In January, Alexandra Prokopenko, a former Russian central bank official, wrote in Foreign Affairs that Moscow's current military spending has overshadowed social spending for the first time since the fall of the Soviet Union.

"This pivot toward a militarized economy threatens social and developmental needs," wrote Prokopenko, a scholar at the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center and a researcher at the Center of Eastern European and International Studies.

Russia has also been facing a labor crunch due to the war and a massive brain drain.

An International Monetary Fund official told CNBC earlier this month that Russia's economy is starting to look like the Soviet Union's.

Putin is seeking a fifth presidential term in Russia's upcoming election in March. The 71-year-old Russian leader is expected to win the race against three opponents.

Fury as Russian fashion brand launches £1,300 ‘Stalin’ jackets

A Russian fashion brand is selling ‘Stalin jackets’ with a £1,300 price tag

A new Russian brand has launched a fashion collection inspired by none other than Joseph Stalin, the former Soviet dictator responsible for as many as six million deaths.

From the 1920s until his death in 1953, the wartime leader ruled through fear and violence, with his totalitarian regime condemned for overseeing famines that killed millions of people, ethnic cleansing and mass executions.

But Moscow-based label NewRuBrand24 chose to honour the anniversary of the brutal Bolshevik’s death by recreating the uniform he wore during his reign of terror.

Stalin’s silhouette was boxy, with broad shoulders and a commanding posture, reflecting the authoritarian ethos of the era.

The price tag for looking like the dictator? A staggering 150,000 rubles (£1,300).

But what is particularly heinous about this launch is the choice of location for the ad campaign.

It was shot in Ukrainian cities ravaged by Russia ’s bombardment – places destroyed and occupied by Vladimir Putin ’s army.

The model is shown walking along streets emptied of Ukrainians, surrounded by rubble and buildings where life once flourished.

The contrast of the ‘Stalin’ jackets against the backdrop of this devastation only adds fuel to the fire.

Similar attire was also worn by Putin’s mouthpiece and former president of Russia, Dmitrii Medvedev, on Monday as he stood up in front of hundreds of people and declared: ‘ Ukraine  is, of course, Russia.’

The brand said about the launch: ‘Stalin’s jacket – the premiere on a memorable date.

Dmitry Medvedev also wore a similar jacket at a public speech in Sochi (Picture: East2West)

‘The jacket has become one of our business cards. It is called “Stalinist”, since the “father of nations” always wore a strict suit in military fashion.

‘On this memorable date, March 5, we are presenting a new model of our jacket – in it we beat the famous Stalinist suit.’

Queues were shown outside the flashy Moscow store as it opened for the first time earlier this week.

But the reaction has not been what NewRuBrand24 may have hoped for.

Under a post on Instagram, one comment read: ‘You urgently need to change something, start with a psychologist!’

NASA And SpaceX Blast Off To International Space Station

SpaceX and NASA on Sunday successfully launched a crew of Russian and American astronauts towards the International Space Station (ISS) to begin a months-long mission in Earth orbit, the latest joint endeavor between Elon Musk’s rocket venture and the U.S. government agency as competition in the budding space industry heats up.

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket with a Crew Dragon spacecraft launches from Kennedy Space Center at 10:53 ... [+] p.m. EST in Cape Canaveral, Florida on March 3, 2024.

NASA and SpaceX said the four person crew had successfully reached Earth orbit in the company’s Dragon spacecraft to begin a six month science mission aboard the ISS.

Dragon was launched atop SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida Sunday night after multiple delays due to bad weather.

The mission, called Crew-8, marks SpaceX’s 13th mission carrying people and the 8th time NASA has employed the company to fly rotating crew from the orbiting station.

Onboard Dragon are three NASA astronauts—commander Matthew Dominick, pilot Michael Barratt and mission specialist Jeanette Epps—and one Russian cosmonaut from Roscosmos, flight engineer Alexander Grebenkin.

Apart from Barratt, who is making his third visit to the ISS, it is the crew’s first visit to the ISS and their first spaceflight mission, NASA said .

NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said the crew will conduct more than 200 science experiments and technology demonstrations on the ISS to help prepare for human space exploration, including using stem cells to study degenerative diseases, studying the effects of microgravity and UV radiation on plants and testing whether pressure cuffs could help reduce health problems in astronauts .

Crucial Quote

“Congratulations to NASA and SpaceX on another successful launch to the International Space Station,” Nelson said. “On this eighth crew rotation mission, we are once again showing the strength of our commercial partnerships and American ingenuity that will propel us further in the cosmos.”

What To Watch For

SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft, named Endeavour, is set to dock autonomously with the ISS during the early hours of Tuesday morning, Eastern time. SpaceX said people can follow Dragon’s journey to the ISS using an interactive graphic on its website. Docking with the ISS is supposed to happen around 3 a.m. Tuesday, NASA said, and the agency will show live coverage from 1 a.m. on NASA+ , YouTube , its website and other locations like the NASA app . The crew of the ISS usually perform a welcome ceremony once the latest rotation of crew is aboard, which NASA said it will also stream. There are seven crew currently onboard the ISS, four of whom will leave and “splash down off the coast of Florida” after a handover period.

Forbes Valuation

We estimate Musk is worth $210.5 billion. His fortune—stemming largely from companies he cofounded and runs like Tesla, SpaceX and Neuralink—makes him the world's second richest person, behind French luxury goods titan Bernard Arnault ($227.8 billion) and ahead of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos ($199.1 billion).

50. That’s how many people SpaceX have launched into space after its latest mission, the company said. In an image posted to X, formerly known as Twitter, SpaceX showed its latest four astronauts adding their names to a wall of signatures around logos for NASA and the company. It said the signatures were signed ahead of boarding and liftoff and were in the “White Room” at the end of the crew access arm to the spacecraft. SpaceX said its Dragon missions have carried more than 1,000 research experiments to orbit over the last 12 years.
