How I Got Started

  With my dad, we went on many road trips. We went to deserts, mountains with forests and drove many places along the coast. My dad preferred the deserts. He liked getting out in the middle of nowhere where he could feel solitude. I liked heading toward the mountains. I liked the scenic drives through the trees because living in southern California, it wasn’t like living in Oregon, where I lived with my mom for several years, where it seemed every house in every neighborhood at a pine tree in their front yard.  Just looking around in the local areas were vast amounts of forests. In southern California you had to drive to the mountains to see the pine trees. 

  A little bit of difference between my dad and me, I like to explore the area I go to. That includes getting out to the car and taking a closer look. My dad would rather see it from the car window as he would drive through it without stopping. Later I learned from my mom that in their early married life, they would get in the car to go somewhere.  My dad just wouldn't tell my mom where they were going. He really didn’t know himself, actually. He just liked to make it up as he went.

Gordon Ramsay's American Road Trip is available in the U.S. on Fox, at 8 p.m. Eastern time starting Tuesday, Jan. 5.

After that you'll be able to watch it on Fox on demand.

The one-night special will see the tight-knit trio taking in the sights and culinary delights of Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Texas and Tijuana.

Who stars in Gordon Ramsay's American Road Trip?

No-nonsense Gordon is joined by fellow celebrity chefs Gino D’Acampo and Fred Sirieix, both of whom are familiar faces on British TV.

Gino is a renowned (and hilarious) Italian celebrity chef, who rose to fame as a regular chef on daytime TV show This Morning in the UK and is also a panelist on Keith Lemon's show Celebrity Juice . 

As well as cooking up a storm on TV, Gino also has a hugely successful line of cookbooks in the UK.

Fred is a famous French Maitre d'hotel and has appeared on shows like Channel 4's First Dates and BBC Two's Million Pound Menu.

What happens in Gordon Ramsay's American Road Trip?

Along the way the trio’s antics will include wallet-busting burgers, dune buggy racing, goat yoga, spear fishing, cowboy capers and wild wrestling — not to mention an array of interesting ingredients, including tequila in a salad! 

What could possibly go wrong?

As always there is plenty of hilarious banter, bickering and ego-bashing thrown in for good measure. 

With Gino and Fred both loyal to their European roots, will Gordon be able to convince the culinary experts that food in the US lives up to its reputation for being bigger and better than anywhere else in the world?

While the trio might try to outdo one another as they sample the local delicacies and fight to be crowned the next king of the kitchen, they all have one thing in common — a shared passion for good food.

Gordon Ramsay ‘s American Road Trip is actually an edited version of the 2nd season of  Gordon, Gino & Fred’s Road Trip , a series that aired on ITV in Britain and is on the UK version of BritBox. That’s important to note, because it means this wasn’t just a random road trip for Ramsay and his buddies Gino D’Acampo and Fred Sirieix, it was a well-planned season of a food and travel show. But, by taking a four-episode, 3-plus-hour season and whittling it down to 82 minutes (without ads), does the show still make sense?

GORDON RAMSAY’S AMERICAN ROAD TRIP : STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?

The Gist: Gordon Ramsay, whose shows seemingly fill up half of Fox’s primetime schedule, took his two best friends, Italian chef Gino D’Acampo and French maître d’hôtel Fred Siriex, in a souped-up RV on a road trip through the western United States and Tijuana.  Gordon Ramsay’s American Road Trip is the result.

Actually, as mentioned above, this is an edited-down version of the second season of the ITV series Gordon, Gino & Fred’s Road Trip , where the trio took the RV, nicknamed “Betty,” on the road from Tijuana to Las Vegas and Arizona, back to Los Angeles, up to San Francisco, and then back down and over to Texas. Along the way, the friends do different American things, like work on a dude ranch, race buggies on a track (where Gino somehow crashes into Betty, inexplicably parked near the track), go fishing, and try their hand at real Texas barbecue for a crowd or rodeo workers.

But, the special — edited in a way so that they start in Las Vegas, go to AZ, then LA, then SF,  then Mexico and Texas — also shows the years-long friendship between Ramsay, D’Acampo and Siriex. They make silly bets with each other; at Gordon’s LA mansion, Fred and Gino bet Gordon that the burger that Gordon’s mom likes better will have to dive into Gordon’s pool buck naked. They bust each others’ balls, as Gordon scares Gino with the stuffed deead animals adorning the cabin they stayed in after fishing.

They also discover the west via various cuisines, like when they race to make fortune cookies in San Fran’s Chinatown, or when they go to Snow’s BBQ in Texas to talk to pitmaster Tootsie Tomanetz .

What Specials Will It Remind You Of?: A goofier version of Ramsay’s other travel series, Gordon Ramsay: Uncharted.

Performance Worth Watching: Gino D’Acampo readily admits he’s not the manliest alpha male around, but it’s fun watching him get scared in a helicopter over the Grand Canyon or duck into the gondola of a hot air balloon over Napa.

Memorable Dialogue: After Gino tries to wedge the RV down Lombard Street in SF, he tells Gordon he could have made it. “Just because you’re the king of the kitchen, doesn’t mean you’re the king of the street.”

Sex and Skin: Besides seeing these three middle-aged men skinny dipping in Texas, or Gino wearing assless chaps (appropriately blurred out for American network television), there’s nothing.

Our Take: The disjointedness of  Gordon Ramsay’s American Road Trip made me wonder if this wasn’t intended to be a special, and my suspicion was confirmed when I found that it was the second season of  Gordon, Gino’s and Fred’s Road Trip. That season was only four 45-50 minute episodes, but that also means that more than half of the trip was sliced out to accommodate the 85-minute (without commercials) running time for Fox. The rejiggering of the order, as well as the seeming incompleteness of the trip, makes the special tough to watch.

There’s also the fact that, like in  Uncharted , Ramsay uses his locales and the people in it more as a backdrop for his cooking and the shenanigans of him and his buddies than as a deep exploration of the people and culture of a region, and how it’s communicated through its food. Not that it’s a bad thing; not everyone needs to be the late Anthony Bourdain or, as Taste The Nation showed, Padma Lakshmi. But there are points during the special where they come off as Ugly Europeans, picking off the most stereotypical of American experiences but not digging any deeper.

Because of his experience in the States, Ramsay seems to be more interested in the deeper American culture than his buddies, no matter what they say about always wanting to be cowboys or some such. It’s a bit jarring, but a lot of that may be hyped up for the cameras.

What we liked the most about the special was the friendship between Gordon, Gino and Fred. Yes, it’s pretty immature at times, given the fact that all of these men are well into their 40s and 50s. But they also keep each other in check, and any program that shows Ramsay on a human level instead of a mouth yelling curses, which seems to be how Fox wants him to look, is a bonus. But there’s too much about this special that made us cringe.

Our Call: SKIP IT. If you can get hold of  Gordon, Gino & Fred’s Road Trip , watch that instead of the Frankensteined version of it.  Gordon Ramsay’s American Road Trip doesn’t say enough about Ramsay, his buddies or America to be worth your time.

‘Up in the Air’ (2009)

Ryan Bingham (George Clooney) works for an HR company where he flies all over the country, firing employees for busy bosses. He’s into the jet-set lifestyle and never wants to be tied down by possessions or relationships. When his ambitious 23-year-old co-worker, Natalie Keener (Anna Kendrick), suggests they fire people by video call, Ryan is at risk of losing his lifestyle. He takes Natalie with him on his travels to show her why a video call is too impersonal for their job. She’s constantly questioning his philosophies, which forces each of them to do some introspection and decide what they really believe in.

‘On the Road’ (2012)

Young intellectual writer Sal Paradise (Sam Riley) has his life turned upside down by his meeting with firecracker Dean Moriarty (Garrett Hedlund) and Moriarty’s 16-year-old wife, Marylou (Kristen Stewart). Sal takes off on a cross-country road trip with them as the trio search for freedom from conformity and a pure, unadulterated experience.

‘Emily in Paris’ (2020 - Present)

“Emily in Paris” is sure to give you that itch to jet to Europe. How to do the great American road trip: Montana and Wyoming

T he old-time rancher looked us up and down, and then in his best cowboy drawl, asked, “Where y’all from?” On naming our home base, he insisted: “Florida? That’s the other side of the world.”

And, in his way, he was probably right. From Farson, Wyoming , the Sunshine State probably seemed a world away from the immense reaches of this Western-cultured state, where round-ups were still conducted on horseback and tourism was just a quaint idea.

True, we had all stopped for ice-cream at Farson Mercantile rather than anything cowboy-like, but the whipcord-slim old-timer gave the impression that anything from out of state might just as well be in a different hemisphere.

This was the Wyoming we had hoped to discover, though, after scrapping plans to head further west. Our grand 12-month RV adventure had hit a roadblock, having come too far, too fast and put our Winnebago Sightseer under undue strain.

We’d had to decide between pushing on an additional 1,000 miles to Washington and Oregon in favour of more Montana and Wyoming, which we had only touched on during our hectic dashes to Yellowstone and Glacier National Park. Indeed, Wyoming had really piqued our curiosity with its small-city-big-country feel, and we wanted a deep dive into a state still predicated on ranching, mining and railways.

The most populous city is state capital Cheyenne, but, with 65,000 people, that’s less than Torquay in Devon. Yet Wyoming is nearly 4,000 square miles larger than the entire UK. To say it is an ocean of emptiness in a vast panorama of mountains, rivers and ranches is an understatement. Nature still rules the roost here, and that makes it perfect for exploring by RV.

After the wonders of Glacier National Park , we had turned south-east through Montana and a welter of small towns, including the near ghost-town of Reed Point, agricultural Shelby and historic Great Falls, a pivotal location in the legendary Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1805.

Here, the Corps of Discovery spent more than a month hauling their boats up the Missouri River through five waterfalls, a compelling story excellently told at the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail Interpretive Center and Giant Springs State Park , home of the shortest river in the world, the less-than-mighty 200ft Roe River.

The boutiquey Old West RV Park earned our plaudits for its location in the heart of Reed Point, with its Waterhole Saloon (and truly excellent burgers), while the nearby Harvest Host site of Greycliff Mill offered a modern counterpoint with its heavenly milkshakes, bagels and paninis. Natural Bridge Falls on the Boulder River scenic drive provided the eye candy.

That took us further south, into Wyoming and deeper into cowboy culture, via the town of Buffalo with its stately edifice of The Occidental Hotel and 1908 Saloon, and Sheridan, where Peter D’s RV Park offered one of the most user-friendly RV camps we had discovered to date.

By this stage – 4,635 miles into our journey – we had discovered the “secret” of RVing, and it wasn’t about pointing our rig, Indefatigable (or Fati for short), at the nearest scenic trail and following our noses, as we did during the first three months.

No, the essential truth of this unique style of travel was to use the RV as the base from which to explore in our little Ford Fiesta, Nippy. Therefore, we picked Sheridan, Casper, Wheatland and Green River as HQs for extensive adventuring, and dug into the magnificence that is Wyoming.

Sheridan, with its cute downtown, opened the door to the impressive Tongue River Canyon and the historic Fort Phil Kearny , site of a key battle in Red Cloud’s War from 1866-68; Casper offered us major stops on the fabled Oregon Trail , the 19 th -century pioneer route to the West Coast. We stood on the iconic Independence Rock and struggled to imagine how those intrepid folks would have viewed this stark landscape, battling through its countless barriers on foot, wagon and horseback.

They had to reach this point by 4 July on their epic 2,170-mile trek west or risk not achieving their destination before the onset of winter (and starvation). Roughly half a million people passed this way between 1836 and 1869; most of them made it, but thousands did not.

From Wheatland, we drove south to the true cowboy outposts of Cheyenne and Fort Laramie; lapped up the mountain scenery of the US-34 scenic drive; and marvelled at Wind River Canyon, gateway to Thermopolis and its extensive thermal springs.

Even better, looking at the map, we saw we were only 150 miles from Rocky Mountain National Park , just across the border of Colorado , and we set forth in Nippy to get up close and personal with the Rockies.

We had already encountered them in Glacier, but this was different. Surrounded by peaks reaching 14,000 feet, our WPMs (Wows Per Minute – trademark pending) reached new heights as we goggled at a 360-degree vista of mountain splendour. The scenic drive up Cache La Poudre Scenic Byway served as a warm-up to the main event, taking US-34 into the National Park, where arriving in Estes Park brought the full majesty into play.

Trail Ridge Road took that lofty vision and ran with it, highlighting why it was designated an All-American Road in 1996. Here, the road touched 12,000 feet above sea level, an elevation beyond the tree line and with views in every direction that staggered the mind. As we descended back to a mere 8,000 feet, a solitary moose crossed our path, grazing casually on lake vegetation, a glorious symbol of nature’s munificence.

If we thought this part of the world had delivered all the scenic wonders it could offer, we found more as we headed west to Green River back in Wyoming. In the shadow of the imposing Castle Rock and the edge of the high plains Red Desert, this city was the starting point for explorer John Wesley Powell’s 1869 expedition to the Grand Canyon. More importantly, it offered the Flaming Gorge – Green River All American Road , 45 miles of zig-zagging roller-coaster that continued into Utah and the Uinta Mountains.

Halfway through what actually turned out to be a grand 154-mile round-trip, we arrived unexpectedly at Red Canyon Overlook, an improbably precipitous point perched 1,631ft above the Flaming Gorge Reservoir, and affording views halfway to forever.

We had started out in the high desert, populated by a mass of hardy sagebrush and sunflowers, and graduated through a jumbled mass of hogbacks, bowls, ridges, cuestas and ancient deep river canyons to the high-altitude pine forest of the Red Canyon.

The wildlife was equally impressive, from sage-grouse and wild horses to mule deer and the seemingly ever-present pronghorn antelope.

It challenged our knowledge of geologic features and understanding of the ages-old terraforming powers of wind, water and frost. But, best of all, it was utterly untouched by any human activity or degradation, a pristine, untroubled landscape that bordered on the holy.

As we rolled westward along I-80 towards Idaho, we were left with a deeply-ingrained sense of Wyoming’s essential vastness, the big-sky attributes of horizons that filled our windscreen and more besides; a truly magical vista.

It was utterly untouched by any human activity or degradation, a pristine, untroubled landscape that bordered on the holy

The lone somber note was provided by repeated sightings of the Sand Creek Massacre Trail , another heartbreaking story of brutality by the US Army in attacking a peaceful camp of Cheyenne and Arapaho in 1864, slaughtering men, women and children. The Trail reflects the 600-mile journey of the survivors. It took until 1990 for the government to issue an official apology for the 19th century bloodbath, and until 2000 for the National Historic Site to be created.

For a while, we trundled along in silence, pursued by memories of a 159-year-old outrage. To this day, it is the only National Historic Site with the word “massacre” in it. And that’s a start.

How to do it

• Always leave both sewage tanks closed until you’re ready to dump them. You don’t want a “poo pyramid” in your black (toilet) tank because you let all the liquid out.
• When filling up at a petrol station, make sure you can get OUT of the station as well as in. RVs don’t fit in some spaces and you must check them out before filling up.

The Fieris continue their epic road trip as gingerbread house baking turns into a decorating showdown and a traditional Bavarian meal. Plus, there's a zipline adventure, campground curry, over-the-top burgers and milkshake mania at a retro stainless-steel diner.

Great Food with Good Friends

The Fieris are going whole-hog with barbecue and getting gourmet with prime rib and lobster. Plus, there's a special trip to Jim Belushi's Oregon farm to cook up Albanian Belushi-family recipes, as well as American favorites like ribs and pizza -- done with Guy's special touch.
