How Much Does a Cruise Trip Cost in India?

By Michael Ferguson

Cruise trips are a great way to explore the world and experience a luxurious vacation. If you are planning to go on a cruise trip in India, you might be wondering how much it would cost. In this article, we will discuss the cost of a cruise trip in India and what factors influence the price.

Factors that Influence the Cost of a Cruise Trip

There are several factors that can influence the cost of a cruise trip in India. Some of these factors include:

  • The duration of the cruise
  • The type of cabin you choose
  • The cruise line you choose
  • The time of year you travel
  • The destinations you visit

Duration of the Cruise

The duration of your cruise trip is one of the biggest factors that can influence its cost. Typically, shorter cruises tend to be less expensive than longer ones. A three-night cruise in India can start from around INR 10,000 per person, while a seven-night cruise can cost upwards of INR 25,000 per person.

Type of Cabin You Choose

The type of cabin you choose on your cruise ship can also impact the overall cost. Cabins with balconies or ocean views tend to be more expensive than interior cabins without any view. If you are looking for luxury accommodations, such as suites or villas, expect to pay even more.

Cruise Line You Choose

Different cruise lines have different pricing strategies based on their Target audience and level of service offered. Some luxury cruise lines like Seabourn and Silversea offer all-inclusive packages that include meals, drinks, and gratuities in their ticket prices. Other mainstream cruise lines like Royal Caribbean and MSC Cruises offer different tiers of cabins and packages, allowing passengers to customize their experience based on their budget.

Time of Year You Travel

The time of year you choose to travel can also impact the cost of your cruise trip. Peak season, which typically falls between October and March, tends to be more expensive than off-season travel. If you are looking for a cheaper cruise trip in India, consider traveling during the monsoon season from June to September.

Destinations You Visit

The destinations you visit on your cruise trip will also affect the overall cost. Some popular destinations like Goa and Mumbai tend to have more expensive cruises due to their popularity and demand. On the other hand, less popular destinations like Kochi or Chennai might have cheaper cruise options available.

7 Affordable, Yet Best Cruises in India That You Can Actually Experience Right Now!

Photo of Himani Khatreja

Opinions on cruises are divided.

Some consider them a massive waste of money and time, abhor their readymade tours and contrived performances and miss the action of the real world while on board. And I have to agree. Those expecting travel experiences out of a cruise are set to be disappointed. You won't be meeting any locals, hunting for new places to see on a map, making impromptu plans or indulging in authentic local flavours, even if you are on some of the best cruises in India .

But for when you need to shut your mind off and hand over the controls to someone else, a cruise makes for an excellent vacation. The only thing you are expected to remember is buffet time. You can spend the rest of the day lying on a deck chair staring at the sea making waves. Perfect for a rejuvenating break.

Cruise Tour Packages in India

Cruises in India are almost synonymous with the word luxury and are particularly the favorites of international jet-setters visiting India and fast catching up with Indian audiences. Relaxed and pampered are the words that best describe cruise packages from India.

A typical cruise in India is on a vessel or a houseboat that sails at its own pace to some of India's picturesque destinations and islands along with open seas. We have a comprehensive list of cruise packages in India that will offer a unique traveling experience. Apart from exploring the attraction, you will enjoy the journey that will allow you to see the endless ocean's spectacular view.

The Cruise Ship tour package lets the guests enjoy recreational facilities like Ayurveda massages, beauty, health parlors, comfy lounges on deck, fine dining, and well-stocked bars. Swimming pools are perfect before they retire from the comfort of their relaxing cabins for the night. Little did people know that India has a long history of cruises. Owing to its relevance as a significant trade hub opened, sea routes were traversed by boats and ships way back in the 4th century. Mumbai and Kochi, India's two biggest seaports, are both on the Arabian Sea coast on the western coastline.

Towards the eastern side, Visakhapatnam is the biggest port. When in Mumbai, most cruises depart from the iconic Gateway of India and continue deep into the Arabian Sea. Some cruises in Goa are also floating casinos that sail into international waters to allow gambling on their floors. No wonder why cruise ship tour packages from India are genuinely exceptional.

Down south, one of the most popular luxury liners, the Oberoi Motor Vessel, sets sail from Alleppey on a 3-night cruise. Especially in Kochi (previously Cochin), there are many luxury cruises and houseboats in the staid backwaters of Kochi, Kumarakom, and Alleppey that offer the perfect retreat for rest-starved souls.

Kochi is a 2000-year-old port that sees off hundreds of cruises daily. Thereby offering memorable cruise vacations. Guests can never get enough of its mesmerizing backwaters – a wonderful area of peaceful canals, serene lagoons, expansive lakes, and unpredictable rivers that change character with every twist and turn around low-barrier islands.

Embark on some of the best cruise ships to curate memories of a lifetime. Savor panoramic views. Marvel at some of the awe-inspiring sunset views of your life. Dance to the exciting tunes, chit-chat with fellow members on board, and enjoy your heart's content.

Our cruise ship tour packages from India include meals, airport transfers, and local sightseeing. The lucrative deals will urge you to board cruise liners in India and start gliding over calm waters. Gateway of India, arch monument in Mumbai, India

Memorable Mumbai

Gateway of India, arch monument in Mumbai, India

South Mumbai is the worldliest part of the city and home to many of its most-loved sights. Walk around the base of the massive Gateway of India — the arch-shaped monument was built in 1924 and meant to be the first thing visitors see when they arrive by boat. Or pop your head inside the Taj Mahal Palace hotel, one of India's most opulent and recognizable buildings.

Seaside Meditation

View of Mumbai, India, from Marine Drive

Communion with nature is more meditative when you make the journey to the seaside Shree Mahalakshmi Temple — less than an hour each way from the cruise terminal by taxi. And check out Chowpatty Beach, where thousands of locals come to dunk statues of the god Ganesh into the waves each year in September.

Statues inside the Elephanta Caves in Mumbai, India

Carved From History

Hop aboard one of the many boats bound for Elephanta Island, which sits just offshore from Mumbai and is home to the Elephanta Caves. At this UNESCO World Heritage Site, you'll find caves full of otherworldly rock carvings in both the Hindu and Buddhist traditions.

Masala dosa with potato stuffed inside, very popular breakfast in Mumbai, India

Local Cuisine

Mumbai is home to fine restaurants, but the best way to understand its culinary disposition is with its street food. Sit down for a masala dosa , India's take on a crepe, which in Mumbai is served with spicy tomato sauce. During your cruise to India, enjoy one of the many fritters for sale at Chowpatty Beach — the potato-and-onion bhaji is popular among vegetarians.

Colorful traditional Indian dresses selling at the street vendors in Mumbai, India

Mumbai is a shopper's pardise, whether you take a walk down Colaba Causeway to browse traditional Mahrashtran jewelry or snag a vintage Bollywood movie poster from any of the souvenir stalls in Apollo Bandar, the neighborhood nearest to the cruise ship terminal. Alternatively, take home a piece of Indian fashion in the form of a woman's sari.

The 4 best cruises to take in India this year

By Ria Gupta

The 4 best cruises to take in India this year

From the early days of exploration to modern luxury liners, sailing has long been a way to see the world from a different perspective. While cruise culture in India is still young, several operators and companies across the country are carving out a niche for themselves by offering new ways to see the country and travel slow and easy. State-of-the-art vessels equipped with modern amenities offer the perfect vantage to enjoy India’s wealth of culture, history and wildlife. From the backwaters of Kerala to the Ganges and Brahmaputra with their bustling ports and historical cities, here is our pick of the four best cruises in India that you can take this year.

Secret of Sunderbans Jungle Cruise by Antara Cruises

The 4 best cruises to take in India this year

Wildlife enthusiasts look no further. The five-day Sunderbans Jungle cruise aboard the Ganges Voyager traces the culture and wildlife along the majestic Hooghly River. The vessel embarks from Kolkata and makes its way towards the fishing port of Namkhana, the gateway to the Sundarbans. The ship cruises past towns and villages till it enters the protected mangrove forests. Hereon, there are stops at various watchtowers and islands for sightings of endangered crocodiles, terrapins, migratory birds and if you are lucky, the elusive Royal Bengal Tiger . The Sundarbans with its unique and fragile biodiversity has a wealth of flora and fauna that will be pointed out by an expert naturalist on board. This apart, there is plenty to take in by way of culture and history—from centuries-old temples to glimpses of local life in the surrounding villages. The days are spent either meandering down the river or excursions onshore, evenings are usually reserved for unwinding over drinks and watching folk dances and musical performances from the region. The Ganges Voyager is an all-suite ship which can accommodate up to 56 guests and is done up in a heritage colonial style with Burma teak, vintage furniture and hand-stencilled walls. There are five categories of rooms across three decks, all of which offer expansive views from floor to ceiling windows or balconies. The ship has a restaurant offering an array of local delicacies as well as Continental fare, a lounge, sun deck and a fitness centre and spa for some quick rejuvenation after a day of sightseeing.

Fare:  From Rs1,20,000 per person including stay, all onboard activities, onground excursions as per the itinerary, all meals and complimentary yoga sessions.

Brahmaputra Maximum by Assam Bengal Navigation

The 4 best cruises to take in India this year

For those who want an immersive dive into the riverine culture of Assam, this 10-night cruise along the Brahmaputra packs it all in. This journey begins at Neamati Ghat which is 1.5 hours from Jorhat Airport. Adventures begin from day two as you sail down the mighty Brahmaputra and witness the river in its splendid flow. Enroute you will stop to see the temples of Sibsagar, the one-time capital of the Ahom kings of Assam; have lunch at an Assamese tea estate; and cruise to Majuli Island for a shore excursion. The cruise follows villages and historical sites along the Brahmaputra till it reaches the boundaries of the Kaziranga National Park. Elephants can be spotted on the banks as well as the park’s most famous denizen, the one-horned rhino, so keep a lookout. Guests will enjoy three jungle safaris across different parts of this expansive and stunning national park. The rest of the days are spent meandering through local markets on rickshaws in Tezpur, visiting temple ruins, river islands and stopping by to learn about Assamese silk weaving in Sualkuchi, the centre of the silk industry in the state. ABN operates its cruises from July to April. The Brahmaputra cruises begin in October. March and April is the best time to spot wildlife. The Brahmaputra Maximum journeys are undertaken in the ABN Sukapha and ABN Charaidew II. ABN Sukapha is a 12-cabin vessel designed especially for the waters of the Brahmaputra, while the ABN Charaidew II is a newer and sprawling 18-cabin addition to the fleet, which cruises faster than others thanks to an extra-shallow draught. The ABN Sukapha is designed as an expedition-style boat with cane and bamboo decor, a dining room, sundeck, a spa and a saloon with a library. The ABN Charaidew II is a colonial-style ship complete with wood and rattan accents, local Assamese art and handloom furnishings. There is a lounge, dining room, spa and expansive sundeck perfect for sunset views and cocktails. The food is locally sourced and buffet-style with an expansive roster of local dishes.

Cruise ship worker breaks down everything they have to pay for and people can’t believe it

Cruise ship worker breaks down everything they have to pay for and people can’t believe it

People were left surprised by some of the costs that come with working on a cruise.

Olivia Burke

Although it might seem like all fun and games for cruise ship workers sailing the high seas, they have to splash a bit of cash too while their putting a graft in onboard.

Despite there being plenty of perks that come with the job, the staff still have to spend their hard earned cash on certain amenities and essentials - which has come as a bit of a shock to a lot of people.

Amber Olivia , better known online as @amboliviaa , regularly shares cruise ship content on social media while working onboard as an entertainer for Princess Cruises.

In one of her latest videos, she revealed what expenses cruise ship workers have to accommodate for during their lengthy voyages across the ocean.

Amber, from Nottingham , explained that contrary to popular belief, employees do have to pay for alcoholic drinks .

But they also have access to their very own 'crew bar', where they can get drunk for a lot less.

She said: "The drinks are so cheap. They really are heavily discounted, it's not going to leave a mark on your bank account, it's super cheap, but we do still have to pay for them.

"Now if we were to go out and around the ship and you get a drink in one of those bars, it's going to be a little bit more."

TikTok/@amboliviaa

The cruise-focused content creator said that all of the passengers pay a set price at these public watering holes, but workers get a 20 percent discount.

Amber then revealed that the crew also have to fork out for internet access while they're on board, which varies in price depending on what WiFi provider you are with.

She continued: "On my company we pay two dollars each day and it's unlimited for the whole day and honestly, that is brilliant.

"I think it's one of the cheapest WiFi's at sea. I know that people who work for different companies pay a lot more.

"With my old company, I used to pay £40 for 3GB. Do you know how quick 3GB just goes?"

The entertainer said that although people reckon there are loads of extras they have access to, there aren't actually that many freebies, as staff members also have to fork out for anything they purchase in the shops situated onboard.

TikTok/@amboliviaa

Amber added: "If we want to buy any snacks, souvenirs, we do have to pay for it.

"But once again, it is at a discounted price to what the guests pay and we get about 20 per cent off, which helps so so much. Of course, you don't need to get this stuff, it's not a necessity."

However, it certainly makes her life at sea a lot more comfortable.

Social media users seemed to be under the illusion that cruise ship workers could have a free-for-all on board, as people in the comment section were pretty shocked by Amber's revelations.

One said: "No free alcoholic drinks? I'm out."

Another wrote: "Now I'm curious about the necessities like soap, shampoo, meds."

While a third wrote: "I love hearing you explain all this."

A fourth added: "I want to know what the pay is!"

And a fifth added: "Paying for internet in this day and age is insane. I know it's not a lot, but you just know their plan is unlimited for a set fee."

Travelers booked the residential cruise of their dreams. Now, some doubt it'll happen — and say they've waited months for refunds.

  • Victoria Cruises Line is selling apartments on a residential ship that would sail around the world indefinitely.
  • The launch of the Victoria Majestic, advertised as a floating retirement home, has been repeatedly delayed.
  • Business Insider spoke to nine buyers who've asked for refunds — but only one has received their money.

Insider Today

Randy and Kit Cassingham sold everything for a dream: to live out their retirement years on a residential cruise ship.

They sold family heirlooms, lifelong collectibles, and their Colorado "dream" home of 20 years with views of the Rockies. Randy, 64, re-homed his cat. Kit's was so old that she had to put her down.

"Those are really hard things to do," Kit, 69, said. "But we're really committed to this lifestyle."

But the Victoria Majestic ship, where the married couple planned to rent a $7,200-a-month suite, never departed last December as planned. It was the trip's fourth launch delay in just 10 months.

Now, instead of peeping polar bears in Norway or snorkeling off Caribbean islands as part of an indefinite itinerary at sea, the Cassinghams say they are struggling to get repayment for their $10,000 deposit to the cruise company, Victoria Cruises Line.

The Cassinghams aren't alone. Business Insider spoke to four couples and three solo travelers who said they gave up hope on the Victoria Majestic and requested deposit refunds. Only one person said they received repayment. The rest said they were still waiting — including five people who requested refunds more than four months ago.

Victoria Cruises Line, for its part, has pushed its latest launch date to July 26. But as of last month, there was still no ship: The company said it would need to reach higher occupancy levels to charter a vessel for the Victoria Majestic.

Once chartered, the ship would embark from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, then travel to more than 200 destinations and 115 countries — including Taipei, Taiwan; Douala, Cameroon; and Mykonos, Greece — for about 2 ½ years before circumnavigating the globe again, Victoria Cruises Line has said.

Victoria Cruises Line declined to comment on customers' claims of delayed refunds, citing pending legal proceedings.

"As the solution to the problematic cases is not the internet and print media, customers who have any problems with VCL have the possibility to initiate legal proceedings as stated in the contract," the company said in a statement.

Victoria Cruises promised an all-inclusive, affordable life at sea

A new crop of residential cruise companies has been advertising floating condos with price tags exceeding $100,000. Victoria Cruises has taken a more accessible approach, offering rentable cabins instead for as low as $3,840 a month.

Unlike some other companies, which have been building custom residential ships or buying used vessels, Victoria Cruises planned to lease a 1,350-guest ship, formerly Holland America's Veendam, sales manager Gabor Nagy-Ferenc told BI in an email in February 2023.

At the time, Nagy-Ferenc said travelers would have to sign a minimum six-month lease. He said the company was targeting passengers 65 years or older who would live in the "retirement home on the water" indefinitely.

Brochures and other marketing materials for the cruise promised that in between destinations, travelers could relax at the ship's two pools, refine their serve at the tennis court, and dine on beef tenderloin with polenta and truffle sauce at the Italian restaurant on board.

To encourage lengthy stays, the cruise company has offered a 40% discount on monthly rent for passengers who signed leases lasting a minimum of 37 months.

Victoria Cruises attracted retired cruisers

The opportunity to live a discounted life at sea lured Florida husband-and-wife Bill and Carol Plaut, both 77 years old. The self-described cruise lovers said they retired about 20 years ago.

In August 2023, the couple put their home on the market. Two days later, they paid Victoria Cruises a $15,000 deposit to secure a $7,200-a-month suite, according to a copy of their wire transfer viewed by BI. They began getting travel vaccinations, stocking up on medications, and getting rid of belongings in preparation for the cruise.

"Cruising is so expensive, and Victoria Cruises made this seem affordable for us," Carol told BI. "We decided this would be our last great adventure, our last big hurrah."

Will, 70, also sold his home last year in anticipation of boarding the "Victoria Majestic" in December. (Will asked to be identified by his first name; BI knows his full name).

Will said he's an experienced cruiser, retiree, and widower with no children who was excited by the opportunity to live at sea.

"I have no responsibilities to anybody right now," he told BI.

So, in August 2023, Will put a $10,000 deposit down for a $5,280-a-month cabin, a copy of his rental agreement reviewed by BI shows. He sold his home in Washington two months later.

"Victoria Cruises would've been cheaper than living at home with the freedom of no home, car, bills, internet payments, or insurance," he said. "It was clearly very economical."

Customers' dreams of starting the New Year on the Victoria Majestic quickly fizzled

Victoria Cruises announced in an October 1 email to customers that it would postpone its December launch, citing issues with occupancy levels.

The email said it had been targeting an 80% occupancy rate before chartering the ship, according to a copy of the message viewed by Business Insider.

Occupancy levels had dropped to 63% in September 2023 — down from 72% three months prior — due to "misbookings" and cancellations related to "illness, death, and financial reasons," Marco Benigni, an operation manager with Victoria Cruises, wrote in the email.

At that point, Will gave up hope on Victoria Cruises. He asked the company to refund his $10,000 deposit in a November 2023 email viewed by BI.

In booking materials posted to its site, Victoria Cruises said customers would receive a full refund within 90 days of a request, as long as they canceled at least 30 days before embarkation.

120 days after Will first asked for a refund, he said he was still waiting for reimbursement.

"To be honest, I don't think Victoria Cruises has the money," Will said. "I can lawyer up and drain my enthusiasm for life. But in the end, there'll be nothing. I won't get any money."

Will is one of nine people who told BI they are waiting on refunds from Victoria Cruises Line. BI reviewed the customers' refund request forms and email correspondence with Victoria Cruises.

Taryna Wawn, a 64-year-old resident of Australia, said she doubts she'll get a refund.

"I refuse to let it get to me at this age," Wawn told BI. She and her husband, Dennis, 65, have been waiting for their $10,000 deposit since October 2023. "We still need to live life and not let it get us down. It's really made both of us angry."

In a February 2 blog post, the company blamed repayment delays on customer errors on the refund form — like "illegible" handwriting or failure to provide accurate bank wire instructions — as well as a Google Drive error.

Victoria Cruises said it was impacted by " Google Drive's data loss " in December 2023. Customers who canceled their contract after September 1, 2023, were asked to resend their refund form and rental agreement, which would make the processing "slower," the company said. (Google declined to comment, instead directing BI to a post in late November 2023 that said the Google Drive issue "only affected local file changes that had yet to be synced to Drive." It released a solution a week later).

Bill Plaut said he was skeptical that Google Drive was to blame for delays, calling it "one of many excuses."

At least one customer, Janie Coffey, has received a refund, however.

Coffey, 55, said she sent Victoria Cruises dozens of emails over the course of several months, including three iterations of her refund request form, all with different banking information.

When the company ultimately emailed her proof of the wire transfer, she noticed it had mistyped her account number.

"I chose Victoria Cruises because my dream is to travel to every country in the world," Coffey told BI. "I thought they were just messy business people. Now I'm looking at everything in hindsight and wondering: Was it a scam from the beginning?"

Coffey received her refund in December 2023 — four months after her initial request.

It was $28 short of the full $10,000, according to a copy of the transfer.

After Will sold his home, he said he "wandered around" before temporarily relocating to France. But he hasn't given up on his cruising dreams: In May, he hopes to board competitor Villa Vie's residential cruise ship .

Unlike Victoria Cruises, the competing startup says it has already acquired a ship for its indefinite cruise around the world.

Some Victoria Cruises customers are now betting on a rival cruise line

Villa Vie has drawn interest from other former Victoria Cruises hopefuls, including the Cassinghams and Holly Hennessy, 67, who emailed Victoria Cruises her refund request form in October.

A number of new residential cruise ship ventures have popped up in recent years, but none have launched yet.

In November 2023, Life at Sea Cruises canceled its never-ending voyage before it ever embarked, citing a lack of a ship and investor withdrawal due to "unrest in the Middle East." Former would-be travelers are now demanding a criminal probe into Life at Sea , accusing the company of withholding about $16 million in customer refunds.

Startup Storylines has promised a new luxury floating condominium, but has yet to begin construction on its $900 million, 18-deck ship. In 2023, nine former employees, consultants, and investors told BI they doubted it would ever be built.

The World , launched in 2002, is the only residential cruise ship in operation. But with limitations: Only about 10 to 12 of its 547 cabins are resold annually between $2 million and $15 million. Buyers must have a net worth of at least $10 million to even be considered.

With costs that high, many travelers had hoped Victoria Cruises could be the next best option.

But on February 2, the company reported a 53% occupancy level — still well below its target of 80%.

The Points Guy

How much does it cost to build a cruise ship?

Today's cruise ships are akin to floating resorts, so it's perhaps not surprising that building a ship can get pricey.

The newest vessels often feature multiple decks with numerous restaurants and bars, entertainment venues, various types of cabin configurations and every attraction you can imagine (such as roller coasters, zip lines and ice skating rinks). The price tag could be astronomical.

The cost of building a cruise ship can vary due to many factors, some of which include ship size, amenities, technology and design. If you're curious just how much money a cruise line needs to construct a new ship, here's everything you need to know.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

On average, modern cruise ships cost between $500 million to over $900 million to build.

Cruise ship costs were much different back in the day. When the Titanic entered service in 1912, the 3,300-passenger ship was the world's largest and cost $7.5 million to build (almost $239 million by today's standards).

While we might think of the Titanic as a cruise ship, it was technically classified as an ocean liner. While its main purpose was transporting passengers across the Atlantic, it also carried mail and products. However, it was designed to offer passengers comfort and luxurious sea travel, making it similar to today's cruise ship experience.

Mardi Gras , the first ship in Carnival Cruise Line 's fleet, cost $5 million to renovate and carried 1,248 passengers when it launched in 1972. (The ship was the refurbished Empress of Canada, originally constructed in 1961.)

Carnival's cruise ships have certainly evolved over the years. The line's new Mardi Gras debuted in 2020, showcasing a seemingly endless list of attractions, including the first roller coaster at sea called BOLT: Ultimate Sea Coaster . The cost to build the 6,500-passenger ship was around $950 million.

Why do cruise ships cost so much to build?

Many components factor into cruise ship construction costs. The bigger the ship and the more passengers it holds, the more money it will cost to build. Also, the number of cabins and suites, as well as onboard features like restaurants, bars, spas, pools and ship attractions (water park, climbing walls, sports areas and the like) add to the final cost.

Additionally, new ships often employ cutting-edge technology and engineering, and cruise lines must pay for the teams of experts needed to turn design dreams into reality. The type of materials used can also drive up the cost, especially if sustainable or ultra-high-end products are used.

Where are cruise ships built?

The shipyards that build most modern-day cruise ships include the Meyer Werft shipyard in Germany, the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in France, the Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland and several Fincantieri shipyards in Italy.

At the shipyard, cruise ships are built in a special dry dock. The dry dock is an open dock area that's been drained. When construction is complete, the ship is launched into the water using a float-out technique — shipyard workers flood the dock with seawater, and the ship floats out. Interior work will continue even as the ship takes to the water for sea trials.

What is the most expensive cruise ship?

Size doesn't always matter when it comes to shipbuilding expenses. Ponant Cruises ' 245-passenger Le Commandant Charcot reportedly cost $430 million for a ship with just 123 rooms. Launched in 2021, the vessel is the first expedition cruise ship capable of reaching the North Pole.

Royal Caribbean corners the market for building expensive cruise ships. Allure of the Seas , which debuted in 2010, is currently the world's most expensive cruise ship. It was constructed at the STX Europe Turku shipyard in Finland for a cost of around $1.43 billion.

The 18-deck, 8,454-passenger ship was the second vessel in the line's groundbreaking Oasis Class series. It's one of the world's largest. The ship is chock-full of amusements — multiple dining and drinking venues, a zip line, the FlowRider surf simulator, an ice skating rink and an AquaTheater.

Wonder of the Seas , the line's newest ship, is the second-most-expensive ship at a construction cost of approximately $1.35 billion. Built at the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Naizaire, France, the 6,988-passenger vessel, which debuted in 2022, currently holds the title of the world's largest ship. As you can imagine, it also holds a dizzying array of diversions. Additionally, it's the first Oasis Class ship to feature a dedicated neighborhood of exclusive amenities for suite guests.

Set to debut in early 2024, Icon of the Seas might overtake the top spot in the list of most expensive cruise ships to build — just as it will surpass Wonder of the Seas as the largest cruise ship in the world.

Icon is Royal Caribbean's first ship in the line's all-new Icon Class, so its design and style will differ from previous vessels. The 7,600-passenger, 20-deck-tall ship will also be around 6% larger and about 10 feet longer than Wonder of the Seas. Early estimates have the construction cost at $2 billion.

Refurbishing older ships vs. building new ones

While it's more cost-effective to refurbish an older ship than to build a new one from the ground up, those enhancements don't come cheap. Sometimes, the renovations require a complete overhaul, including changing the ship's layout and adding cabins, restaurants and attractions.

For example, 17 years after it launched, Royal Caribbean's Navigator of the Seas received a glow-up in 2019 at a cost of $115 million. Improvements included everything from new furniture, carpeting and upholstery to expanded onboard amenities, entertainment and cabins.

Bottom line

The next time you board a cruise ship teeming with every diversion you can imagine, think about how much it cost to build that floating megaresort. It might give you new appreciation for just how much the cruise line has invested to create your ideal vacation at sea.

Work from a cruise ship: Virgin Voyages launches season pass aimed at remote workers

cruise ship trip cost in india

Virgin Voyages will help take remote work to the next level later this year.

The adults-only cruise line will offer a Scarlet Summer Season Pass on its Scarlet Lady ship, allowing guests to take four back-to-back cruises – without using all their vacation days. Travelers can book consecutive Mediterranean sailings between June and September at a discounted rate.

“No longer does working from home mean being tied to a desk or home office and eating leftovers for lunch,” Virgin Voyages CEO Nirmal Saverimuttu said in a news release.

What is the best time to take a cruise? We broke it down by region.

“With our latest WiFi upgrades, Virgin Voyages can now offer our Sailors the chance to see the world while working from a daybed at The Dock (outdoor lounge) and sampling Mediterranean mezzes, then hopping off the ship in between calls to make the most of our incredible ports of call.”

Wi-Fi is already included in the fare on Virgin cruises, but passholders will get the line’s Premium Wi-Fi at no additional cost (though passengers don’t have to be working to take advantage of the pass).

What are the terms of the Scarlet Summer Season Pass?

Travelers can choose from one of four predetermined windows, each made up of four cruises:

  • June 9-July 7
  • July 7-Aug. 4
  • Aug. 4-Sept. 1

There are no blackout dates, and the cruises will feature stops in Cannes and Ajaccio in France; Civitavecchia, Italy; Ibiza and more, though exact itineraries vary by sailing date.

How much does the Scarlet Summer Season Pass cost?

The pass starts at $9,990 for two passengers in a cabin. The price is a “savings of up to 30% compared to travelers booking four independent voyages,” Virgin said in the release.

The pass is good for a Central Sea Terrace cabin, and the cost also includes food from more than 20 eateries; gratuities; wash and fold laundry service; a daily $10 coffee credit per cabin; priority booking for dining and shore excursions; access to Richard’s Rooftop – normally only accessible suite guests – and more.

Travelers can fill out a form on Virgin’s website or contact their travel advisor to book.
