UK comedy legend Al Murray is playing two Greater Manchester shows this year

The Pub Landlord is back. (article contains affiliate links)

Danny Jones

British comedy legend Al Murray is back on the live comedy circuit and bringing his latest stand-up routine to Greater Manchester for two dates this year.

Two years on from his last show Gig For Victory , ‘The Pub Landlord’ himself is back out on stage with new material and the Al Murray: Guv Island tour, with the first of his two dates local to Manchester starting this month.

Kicking off his return to 0161 in Stockport at the stunning Plaza Theatre on Saturday, April 20, the 55-year-old comic will be here before you know it.

Although there’ll be a few more sets performed relatively nearby, including Buxton and Warrington, his second Greater Manchester date at the legendary Lowry Theatre in Salford Quays won’t come around until 20 October – but looking at the reviews, it sure to be worth the wait.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Al Murray (@thealmurray)

Murray has already left a great legacy playing the role of the exaggerated English publican, but the comedian and Oxford University alumnus has always been one of the sharpest on the stand-up scene.

Having secured veteran status long ago, where many experienced acts might be accused of phoning it in on occasion this far into their careers, it’s great to see the Buckinghamshire-born funny man still putting out a quality two-hours plus (including an interval) of jokes.

Receiving fours and fives pretty much across the board, Al Murray isn’t just a household name across the UK but still a very bloody good stand-up.

Said to toy with the modern British population and PC culture, insisting it’s “lost its way” and is now seeking a “life partner/mentor/inspiration”, the description for Guv Island issues the following warning: “No timewasters, tedious show-offs or offend-o-trons”.

  • Two Greater Manchester restaurants have been named in Time Out’s 15 best in the UK
  • A new Bridget Jones movie is on the way – but a key actor won’t be returning for the fourth film
  • Novo Amor brings a studio-perfect production and performance to New Century Hall

Tickets for both his Greater Manchester shows are on sale now and given that the former takes place this weekend at 7:30pm, you might want to be quick about getting one.

You can grab your seats for Al Murray’s show at the Stockport Plaza HERE or for his night at The Lowry this October HERE .

Trailer for Amazon's Man United Treble documentary

Just a fortnight on from Manchester City releasing their treble documentary on Netflix, Manchester United have issued a timely reminder that they did it first by releasing a trailer for their own on Amazon Prime Video.

Oh, we’re about to enjoy some serious online debate and not at all petty social media spats over the next few days. Play nice, everyone…

Simply entitled 99 , the new documentary series from fellow streaming giants Amazon will cover Man United ‘s hallowed 1998/99 season, where they became the first-ever English club in history to win a treble and went down as one of the greatest teams in football history.

Considered the holy trinity of trophies in Europe – winning the first division in your country, the main domestic cup and the Champions League – the true ‘continental’ treble has only ever been completed by eight teams and the Red Devils are clearly looking to capitalise on the same media buzz as City.

Official Trailer: 𝟗𝟗 The story of Man Utd’s remarkable treble-winning season in 1998/99, told by those who were part of it. Coming to Prime Video on 17 May 📺 pic.twitter.com/CN3fzP3oMd — Amazon Prime Video Sport (@primevideosport) April 16, 2024

While Man City are still well and truly basking in the glory of achieving the incredible footballing feat, with the possibility of defending all three titles still very much on the cards,

There have been multiple productions celebrating United’s lifting that same trio of trophies in the past, from The Treble season review film released in 1999 itself to the likes of The Impossible Dream released on its 20th anniversary in 2019 and others, but this latest is set to be the comprehensive look yet.

Showing “never-before-seen footage” and featuring the stories “told by those who were there – including David Beckham, Gary Neville, Paul Scholes, Peter Schmeichel, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and more. documentary” – it promises to serve as the “definitive documentary” of United’s treble season.

Naturally, there’s already plenty of discussion rearing its head over which team was more impressive.

Winning a treble with an entire team you built from scratch including 6 academy players. Tell me again SAF isn’t the goat. https://t.co/VisMWD7vzc — Jay Motty (@JayMotty) April 16, 2024
City Won The Treble last year but Guess who is having another documentary made about a 25 years old achievement… Manchester United.. no trophy to celebrate but this one we will stream and enjoy well https://t.co/uqu844liGy — OmoAWE Aded’eji (@dejiisreal) April 16, 2024
  • Football fans are debating whether Man City made a mistake selling Cole Palmer
  • Remember when the Manchester Marathon used to be too short?
  • Eurovision 2024 final to be screened live in cinemas across Greater Manchester

Amazon has scheduled 99 for a 17 May release date, just over a month and a half on from City releasing Together: Treble Winners , not to mention dropping the trailer itself barely a fortnight after the fact.

Although many have been quick to point out that the docuseries omits any discussion of their ongoing FFP charges – with Paddy Power even spoofing it as a Netflix true crime drama – it has received largely positive reviews for its fly-on-the-wall look at one of the best teams in the world.

Set to be fittingly spread over three parts, 99 is also being co-created by three different parties: Ventureland, Gary Neville’s production company, Buzz16.2, and David Beckham’s Leigh -based production house, Studio 99.

The latter were obviously heavily involved in the recent Beckham Netflix series , so fans of that can expect similar vibes from Amazon’s documentary on United’s own treble season and the momentous year that was 1999.

The grand final of the Eurovision Song Contest is to be screened live in cinemas across Greater Manchester next month.

Following the success of the first-ever live streams of Europe’s biggest party onto the big screen when it was held on British soil in Liverpool last year, cinemas up and down the UK are set to come together once again to celebrate 2024’s edition of the major night in the music calendar by hosting the ultimate viewing events .

The epic Eurovision Song Contest Grand Final on Saturday 11 May will be broadcast live on BBC One, and streamed into more than 100 cinemas nationwide – including several in Greater Manchester .

Hosted by CinemaLive, the live stream events will allow Eurovision fans to gather under one roof and be “united by music” to share in the unbeatable experience of celebrating the brightest and boldest music party of the year on the big screen.

You may remember that Sweden is hosting Eurovision this year, following the Scandinavian country’s well-deserved victory at the 2023 contest with the song ‘Tattoo’ performed by Loreen.

But thanks to these live stream events, you won’t need to make the trip to Malmö to get in on the action, as you’ll just need to nip down to your nearest participating cinema instead.

Not only will the long-awaited final of the show be streamed live onto the big screen in 5.1 surround sound, but fans are invited to bring their Eurovision parties from the front room to the cinema instead, as organisers say fancy dress is “heavily encouraged” as are enthusiastic sing-alongs too.

Speaking ahead of the event next month, John Travers from distributors CinemaLive, said: “We’re delighted to be working with the BBC to bring Eurovision’s grand final live into cinemas across the UK for the second year in a row.

“We want audiences to enjoy themselves, so come along in groups, get your fancy dress on, and join together to enjoy this incredible occasion on the big screen”.

Tickets are now live and available to book at your local cinema here .

Biography - Al Murray

Al murray fan report: ratings and reviews, 2 reviews (ø 5.0).

Al Murray is just ‘the business’, and he works so hard, doing his performance. The only thing I’m puzzled about is, is that real beer he’s drinking. The first comedian to have an unusual act for many years. Being 75, I know what I’m talking about. He’s on par with the greatest of comedians, like Benny Hill, Morecombe & Wise, Hale & Pace, Eric Siykes, Les Dawson, Tommy Cooper, Arthur Haynes, etc, etc, etc. He has to be seen and heard to know how good he is.

Having seen Al on two previous occasions, we saw him again in Sheffield. He was superb once again, and we had stitches from all the laughing. This time, and being over 70, I was picked on as ''pops''. It was fabulous, and on leaving the venue, I had become ''well known''. We are seeing him again at the Dome in Doncaster next month, so that should say it all about this clever man. Just go and see him, his ''act'' is simply different, and very enjoyable. In his words ''Hail to the ale''.

Al Murray Goon Pod

Recorded recently during his latest tour as The Pub Landlord – Gig For Victory – Al Murray joined Tyler to talk comedy and revealed how The Goon Show formed the foundations of his comic sensibilities. Al explained why he considers Spike Milligan’s war memoirs to be among the greatest of their kind – brutally honest while blisteringly funny and as fine a testament to the day-to-day life of soldiers during World War II as anything ever written.  It’s a conversation which took in a lot of topics including Peter Cook, Denis Norden, Spitting Image, Monty Python, Al’s podcast We Have Ways Of Making You Talk, Vic & Bob, Britain’s satire tradition and even prog rock. There's also an impromptu book club as Tyler asked Al for some reading recommendations! https://thepublandlord.com/

Tiger Woods Calls PGA Tour/LIV Golf Bahamas Meeting 'Positive' But Deal Remains Distant

  • Author: Bob Harig

AUGUSTA, Ga. — In his first comments about the meeting last month he attended with the head of the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia, Tiger Woods called it “positive” but didn’t suggest the sides are any closer to a deal.

Woods, now a player director on the PGA Tour Policy Board, hosted a meeting March 18 in the Bahamas that was attended by other board members, PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan and Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the governor of the PIF which also backs LIV Golf.

The subject was not broached during Woods’s pre-tournament media conference at Augusta National and media access was brief following the second and third rounds of the tournament.

In a five-question session on Sunday after Woods finished his final-round 77, Woods was asked his impressions of Al-Rumayyan and if he felt the PGA Tour was any closer to a deal with him.

“I don't know if we're closer, but certainly we're headed in the right direction,” Woods said. “That was a very positive meeting, and I think both sides came away from the meeting feeling positive.”

Woods and Al-Rumayyan played golf on the Albany course near Nassau where Woods hosts the annual Hero World Challenge.

The meeting included all six player directors. In addition to Woods, Webb Simpson, Peter Malnati, Adam Scott, Jordan Spieth and Patrick Cantlay were also there, along with newly-appointed board liaison Joe Ogilvie.

Monahan was also joined by a few representatives of the Strategic Sports Group.

Details from what occurred at the meeting have been vague but it appears the sides are no closer to any kind of agreement than they were 10 months ago when the June 6 “framework agreement” was announced.

Monahan sent a memo to PGA Tour players following the meeting, which was meant to have Al-Rumayyan meet players for the first time and explain his thinking about potential PIF investment in PGA Tour Enterprises, the new for-profit entity that was established earlier this year with SSG’s investment, which could be up to $3 billion.

“What I was interested in going there was to learn more about who he is and what he’s thinking,” Simpson said during an interview last month at the Valspar Championship. “Learn about LIV more. What was your intention and hope there? How’s it going? All that kind of stuff. A meet and greet and learn. I think he wanted to learn from us kind of what we think. We wanted to figure out what he thinks.”

According to Simpson, the meeting did not involve negotiating but more of a big picture of the PIF’s intentions. The sovereign wealth fund is invested in hundreds of companies around the world with a worth in excess of $700 billion. It has invested heavily in sports, including the Premier League, tennis, Formula One racing and golf.

“If definitely seems like he envisions a place in the game of golf,” Simpson said. “We didn’t get as far as what he wants and what does LIV want. He certainly seems engaged enough in the game already that he has desires to see the game grow globally, I think it’s fair to say. And he mentioned growing it in Saudi to try and do that.”

The Masters was the first time since last year’s British Open at Royal Liverpool that players from the LIV Golf League played in the same tournaments as PGA Tour players. And it won’t happen again until next week’s PGA Championship.

“There's a lot of people a lot smarter than me that could figure this out in a much more efficient way,” said Jon Rahm, who won the 2023 Masters and went to LIV Golf in December. “But the obvious answer is that there's got to be a way for certain players in whatever tour to be able to earn their way in.

“That's the only thing can I say. I don't know what that looks like. But there's got to be a fair way for everybody to compete.”

Masters 2024 Leaderboard: First round scores for golf leaders at Augusta

Follow  live updates from all the Masters action here or check out our  hole-by-hole analysis of Tiger Woods' first round  at Augusta National.

The best golfers in the world have once again converged at Augusta National Golf Club in search of the coveted green jacket. This is the 88th edition of the annual Masters Tournament , so will we see a brand new winner or will one of the 18 former winners playing in this year's tournament claim the championship yet again?

Day 1 proved to be exhilarating. Not only did we see the early tournament favorite, Scottie Scheffler , prove why so many people were backing him to win, but a few dark horses emerged as well. LIV's Bryson DeChambeau leads the entire field after Day 1, shooting 7-under par on Thursday. Other golfers who weren't given great odds to start the tournament like Danny Willet (-5) and Nicolai Højgaard (-4) also played some incredible rounds. Even Tiger Woods had some great moments and moves into Day 2 ranking inside the top-20 at 1-under.

From NFL plays to college sports scores, all the top sports news you need to know every day.

Three more days are left in this year's tournament, with one round played each day. The cut will happen after Day 2, and only the top-50 players on the leaderboard will advance into Saturday and Sunday. It's unforgiving, but what else can you expect from a tournament as heralded as The Masters.

Here is everything that happened during Day 1 of the 2024 Masters Tournament.
