Appearances [ ]

Toy story 2 [ ].

While Mr. Potato Head , Slinky Dog , Rex , and Hamm are driving around Al's Toy Barn in a toy car looking for Al 's office, where they plan to find Woody , they come down the Barbie aisle and Hamm asks them for help. Tour Guide Barbie dives in the car with them agrees to help them. She takes them down the Hot Wheels Aisle and then the Buzz Lightyear Aisle where they come across Utility Belt Buzz Lightyear , thinking it's Andy 's Buzz Lightyear , and give him a lift.

In the bloopers , she says goodbye to the viewers, before complaining about her cheeks killing her, having to smile so much.

  • This is also based on a real event. Because of the success of the first Toy Story , Buzz Lightyear toys had a higher demand than retailers expected.

Tour Guide Barbie

Tour Guide Barbie is a supporting character in Toy Story 2 .

Toy Story 2 [ ]

When Hamm , Mr. Potato Head , Rex , and Slinky Dog are lost, they drive by the pink aisle where she and all the other Barbies are partying in. As Hamm asks the Barbies for advice, Tour Guide Barbie votes to volunteer as she jumps into the car that they are driving and gives a tour around Al's Toy Barn . She is implied to be a Polygot, or at least bilingual, as she tells Rex in both English and Spanish to remain in the car after Rex disembarked from the car (to catch the manual for the video game Buzz Lightyear: Attack on Zurg ), and, in a similar fashion to a scene in Jurassic Park, chased it down to get back in. Then she drives the toys into the Buzz Lightyear aisle, where they pick up the Utility Belt Buzz , not knowing that the real Buzz was tied up and imprisoned in a cardboard box sitting on the shelf. She then continues the tour with the toys, leaving the real Buzz behind.

She later appears at the end of the outtakes , saying goodbye to the audience. After it's done, she complains about how smiling hurts her cheeks.

  • Tour Guide Barbie is the first instance of a toy briefly switching it's language from English to Spanish, which Buzz would eventually do when he became Spanish Buzz in Toy Story 3 . However, in the Spanish version of the film, she repeats the statement in French.
  • Tour Guide Barbie's statement about retailers not ordering enough Buzz Lightyear dolls to meet demand is an in-joke and a fact. Because the toy sellers underestimated the box office performance of the original Toy Story when it was released in 1995 , they did not order enough dolls to keep up with demand.
  • When Rex jumps back in the car after trying to catch up, Tour Guide Barbie says: "Remain seated, please. Permanecen sentados, por favor". This is the famous safety spiel heard from the Matterhorn Bobsleds attraction at Disneyland in Anaheim, California.

Margot Robbie and Andrew Mukamal Take Vogue Inside the Making of their Barbie: The World Tour Book

They were the looks seen round the world: Margot Robbie in a mini black-and-white Hervé Léger bandage dress, cat-eye sunglasses across her face; Robbie in a fuchsia pencil skirt and matching blazer, a crystal-bedecked Judith Leiber cell-phone clutch in tow; Robbie wearing a ruffle-hem Emilio Pucci dress, long crimped hair cascading down her back. Each look, styled by Andrew Mukamal for the Barbie press tour, defined modern method dressing . Now the internet-breaking fashions are being immortalized in Barbie: The World Tour , a coffee-table book by Mukamal and Robbie, out March 19 from Rizzoli.

A few weeks ago, on a blustery afternoon in New York City, Mukamal visited the Vogue office to walk us through an advance copy of the book; Robbie joined the conversation via Zoom.

“I had the idea when I was in one of the [tour] fittings with Margot,” Mukamal says of the project. “I was collecting all these sketches and fabric swatches from designers, and I was like, ‘Wow, all of this would make the most beautiful coffee-table book.’” While Robbie was also keen to acknowledge the sartorial triumphs of all who contributed to the promotional wardrobe, that desire was heightened when the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike began, abruptly cutting the tour short following a stop in London; trips to New York, Berlin, and Tokyo were canceled. “We still had a bunch of looks that didn’t get their moment,” Robbie says. “We were like, ‘Oh, that’s so sad.’ But then Andrew found a way for them to have their moment.”

A who’s who of creative talents brought the book to life: Art direction was led by Fabien Baron; Craig McDean signed on as photographer; and Edward Enninful wrote the foreword. The introduction and afterword were penned by Margaret Zhang and Greta Gerwig, respectively.

Ahead, Mukamal and Robbie share highlights from Barbie: The World Tour , a visual feast of vintage dolls, handwritten designer notes, and never-before-seen looks.

Barbie: The World Tour by Margot Robbie and Andrew Mukamal (Rizzoli New York © 2024)

Andrew Mukamal: We had a reference photo, and we thought this would be an amazing way to shoot one of the looks—Margot laying flat. Obviously, it very much references Barbie in her box. This is the Claudia Schiffer Chanel suit we had intended to wear in Tokyo, which Margot also wore in the film. She’s 12 and a half inches on the book’s cover, which is exactly how tall Barbie is. If you see the book on top of a coffee table, it’s almost like a Barbie doll lying there waiting for you to play with her. Hopefully that’s what the experience of flipping through it is like—dressing her up in different outfits and being part of the process of designing them.

Margot Robbie: The method dressing was Andrew’s genius; I definitely can’t take credit. But I did say, “If there was ever an opportunity to really have fun on a press tour with the looks, it’s now.” Because Barbie and fashion are so synonymous and because the movie is so maximalist and zany and poppy and joyful, it felt appropriate to really have fun with it.

Mukamal: This was the first big moment on the tour and in Margot’s home country, so I was basically like, She has to wear a hot, cool version of the black-and-white striped bathing suit. That would just feel so spot-on to me.

Robbie: I loved it. The Hervé Léger bandage dress was a genius way of accomplishing the swimsuit look. And Jacques Marie Mage sunglasses that go with it? It was all just so cool.

Mukamal: And the Manolo [Blahnik] mules he designed specially for this project. Working with him and his team was an absolute dream.

Robbie: What impressed me most was how much research Andrew did. His ideas were insane, but they all came from the Barbie archives and his research. It never felt like we were being too crazy because it was all rooted in something real.

Mukamal: This is also from 1959, Barbie’s first year. Hubert [de Givenchy] created this bubble hem in the fifties, which is exactly what this doll was inspired by during that period. If we were going to Paris, we obviously would have worn this there, but we weren’t; Berlin was the closest we were going to get.

Robbie: And we didn’t make it to Berlin!

Intended for New York City

Robbie: I mean, this is so Barbie.

Mukamal: It would have looked really good in paparazzi photos.

Robbie: Getting photographed on the move, the little cape trailing behind—that would have looked amazing.

Mukamal: Yeah, we were thinking about that. For a city like New York, we were like, What would look cool if you get papped on the street? And [the Carolina Herrera team] killed it. They made all the jewelry custom too.

Mukamal: [We] were going to go to Tokyo, and we were like, Maybe it would be really cool to show up there and be still serving full-on Barbie but in a more elevated and chic way. This Miu Miu is very Miuccia.

Robbie: The look is so good. The little headband! The fur trim!

Mukamal: Gigi Burris made an insane custom headband out of extra faux fur that we got from Miu Miu. And shout-out to Gigi, who made a lot of the beautiful headwear in the book. With some of these looks, you need an expert milliner like her, and there are not enough of them in the fashion industry.

Image may contain Margot Robbie Adult Person Face Head Photography Portrait Clothing Footwear Shoe and Dress

Muakamal: We had a three-day photo shoot for the book, which, to be completely honest, was pretty insane. We were really packing it in.

Robbie: We were throwing on clothes and going and going, and then at one point, we were like, “We need a picture together.”

Mukamal: We started off quite serious, both of us standing there with our arms crossed, looking into Craig’s lens. The whole day everybody’s like, “Oh, my God, Margot, you look amazing!” And the minute I get in front of the lens, it’s crickets. [ Laughs ] Then they’re like, “Maybe you should do something, Andrew?” And I was like, “What can I do? Pin her dress?” Meanwhile, it’s a perfectly fitted custom Prada dress. So I just got down on one knee and pretended to measure the length of her dress. A few snaps later, we ended up with a really cute pic.

“The View”'s Halloween Show Is a Tribute to Disney's 100th Anniversary — See All the Hosts in Costume (Exclusive)

PEOPLE has an inside look at the making of the annual episode, with first look photos and behind-the-scenes tea

The View is having one magical Halloween this year.

Daytime TV's most-watch talk show is celebrating the 100th anniversary of Disney for their annual costumed episode this year, with co-hosts Whoopi Goldberg , Sara Haines , Ana Navarro , Joy Behar , Sunny Hostin and Alyssa Farah Griffin all dressing as their favorite characters from across the company's entertainment entities.

PEOPLE has an exclusive first look at the transformations each star underwent for this year's installment, which airs on Tuesday.

“The Halloween show is a treasured View tradition since the show began and it means a lot to our audience," executive producer Brian Teta told PEOPLE in a statement. "It’s an incredible amount of work but with everything going on in the world it’s so important to take a minute and have a little fun — not to mention showcase the incredible talent of our View Crew."

"Some of our most memorable costumes and themes over the years have celebrated Disney, so we thought the historic Disney 100 anniversary was a perfect opportunity," he added, noting that the episode would feature some co-hosts "taking a little time to enjoy the Magic Kingdom with a trip to Disney World" as well.

Check out the costumes below, with commentary from Sr. producer Jamie sai and director Sarah de la O, who opened up to PEOPLE about the making of all the magic:

Whoopi Goldberg as Tour Guide Barbie from 'Toy Story 2'

It starts with a theme — but the theme can fall apart if the co-hosts latch on to their looks.

"We've always said that Halloween shows don't work unless the women are into the costume, and no one is that clearer example of that than Whoopi," explains Hammer, of the process of picking out each look. "We typically come with suggestions of a bunch of potential characters that we feel are tied to the person, but they can choose whatever they want. And this year, Whoppi was supposed to be The Mandalorian until she came to us and was like, 'I want to be Barbie.' "

That proved a problem, at first, with Barbie (and its parent company, Mattel) not falling under the Disney umbrella. But then, they thought broader.

"We searched through Toy Story and found that there was Barbie in Disney, and there was Tour Guide Barbie!' Hammer says. "So it ended up working out. And Whoopi looked amazing. She was wearing 40 pounds of hair, and carried it effortlessly."

Sara Haines as Carl from 'Up'

Haines, perhaps, underwent the most unrecognizable change this time.

"Sara, in particular, likes to be transformative. She loves Halloween," says Hammer. "So we actually pitched Carl from Up to Sara, amongst others, and that was the one that she picked. She loves narrative of the film, she loves the character; it's something that her kids knew. So she was like, 'I want to be Carl. That's it. I want to be Carl.' And I was like, 'Well... there's prosthetics and this and that.' And she was like, 'I'm all in. Done!' "

Her whole look took two hours and 15 minutes for the team to complete.

Ana Navarro as Mirabel Madrigal from 'Encanto'

Navarro's was a little easier, all around.

"Ana has been such a huge supporter of Encanto from the beginning," says Hammer. "She's friends with Lin-Manuel Miranda, she's friends with John Leguizamo — we felt like that's probably where she was going to go, and we were right."

In fact, Navarro was such a fan of the 2021 Disney animated musical that she didn't just stop at being Mirabel, the movie's protagonist.

Ana Navarro as Isabella Madrigal from 'Encanto'

Later in the show, she changed into Mirabel's sister, Isabella.

"One wasn't enough for Ana, so she got to be both," jokes Hammer.

Sunny Hostin as Neytiri from 'Avatar'

Like Haines, Hostin's costume is a massive transformation — something Hammer and company knew would be the case going in.

"Sunny's a lot like Sara in that know that we can always do something really fun and creative," says Hammer. "And it allows hair and makeup to really be creative and do their thing, too."

"Her costume was obviously super amazing," says De la O. "The show team really elevated it to a new level with her look, I think."

Alyssa Farah Griffin as Princess Jasmine from 'Aladdin'

Related: Alyssa Farah Griffin Says Republican Party 'Needs to Change,' Vows to Fight for Marriage Equality from Within

As for Griffin, with only her second Halloween since becoming a co-host on The View , she used the occasion to call back to something extra sentimental.

"Alyssa has said multiple times on the show that Jasmine was the first Arabian princess — and she's half Lebanese, half Syrian, so to her as a child, it was someone that she identified with," said Hammer. "We had a feeling that was who she was going to pick, and it felt like a dream realized for her in a way."

Joy Behar as Cruella de Vil from 'Cruella'

Joy's pick of Cruella was also a "perfect fit," Hammer says, and a look the comedian "had a lot of fun with."

"We have a lot of fun with Joy in one segment where we brought her, Ana and Whoopi to Disney Treasure, a new cruise that's coming out," Hammer adds. "They have this parlor where you'll be able to interact with ghosts. And if you watch the show, you'll know that Joy has had some experiences with ghosts before. So if you get the reference, you'll get the joke."

Related: Joy Behar Begrudgingly Celebrates 81st Birthday on The View : 'I'm Just Glad I’m Alive, Okay?'

Once the characters are picked, the fun work begins.

Says Hammer: "We'll then pick selects from the film to show to our styling team — made up of stylist Fran Taylor and Ashley Alderfer-Kaufman, our wardrobe supervisor. They put their input, 'Oh, we think this would be great to recreate, that would be great, etc.' And once we have a plan, we'll go back to the hosts to show them what we're thinking and go from there."

With The View airing on ABC, which is owned by Disney, the pressure surely was on to make everything look perfect.

Marc Summers as Alfredo Linguini from 'Ratatouille'

There were guests to dress, too — including beloved Double Dare host (and Food Network favorite) Marc Summers.

"Marc is a really good friend of mine," Hammer says. "This is my 20th year at The View and I met him 20 years ago. So when we were looking for guests, and settled on this idea of doing a segment on foods from classic Disney films that are featured in Disney Parks, it was like, 'Well, Marc Summers from Unwrapped is clearly the perfect person!"

Hammer did not get any resistance when she called up Summers, who fittingly dressed as Alfredo Linguini from Pixar's Ratatouille.

"I was like, 'Do you want to do it?' and he was like, 'Just tell me where and when,' " the sr. producer recalls. "He canceled his plans, he came, and he was just brilliant. He's an unbelievable talent. He absorbs information and just presents it back to the audience in such a clear, understandable and entertaining way. He's perfect."

Brian Teta as Indiana Jones from 'Indiana Jones'

Even Teta got in on the action, dressing as Indiana Jones.

Roy Wood Jr. Makes a Political Statement

The only guests of the day to step away from the Disney theme was guest Roy Wood Jr. The comedian, known for his work on The Daily Show and for hosting the most recent White House Correspondents Dinner, made a callback to the man who was seen swinging a folding chair at the Montgomery Brawl earlier this year. The image soon after became a symbol of resistance against perceived racial aggression.

"Roy actually came up with what he wanted to dress up as, and we just through it was so creative and in line with his political humor," Hammer shares. "And our team, Fran and Ashley, they actually make that costume for him. They attached a folding chair to a BabyBjörn. So that's how that was done."

The co-hosts don't just wear their costumes for the show, but also for a series of pre-recorded skits that help open the show each year.

Those are typically taped first before the full show, as each co-host finishes with their ginormous team of hair, makeup and prosthetics artists that are all working at the same time.

"That's what the most amazing thing about it is," De la O says. "If you think about these big, huge films, they take hours and hours and hours to do makeup, sets — and we do it in two to three hours. To me, it's still mind-blowing that we pull this whole production off in such a short amount of time."

De la O, The View 's first female director , and her team will spend weeks brainstorming ways on how to make each one of the vignettes different and special.

This year, they decided to use a green screen for the first time, which allowed them to do unique things that captured the Disney magic.

"You can't do Encanto without having the moving house," De la O notes. "So doing chroma key, you were able to see that in all its glory."

The technology came in handy with the rest of the cast too, including Farah Griffin.

"Alyssa needed a magic carpet, so we were able to give her that with ease," says De la O.

To create the world of Avatar , De la O added strands of lights to build the fantasy.

"That actually was a whole process that was much harder than we ever thought it was going to be," she notes. "So we actually made the lights! We had our electric shop make the lights. Each individual strand was hand wrapped and the whole thing, and we pulled that off."

"I think Sunny's costume just obviously was super amazing," she adds. "So we needed to take it to that added level."

In fact, the whole process, Hammer says, is about raising that bar.

"It's really cool because we'll start here, and then Sarah will say, 'Well, what if we do this?' And I'll be like, "And what if we do this?' And she'll be like, 'What if we do this?' And then we just end right there," she notes. "It's a constantly evolving creative process."

"That's my favorite part of the whole thing. We start here, and we end up here, and here is different than any other show has," she adds. "Is it tough to get there? Certainly is. It's a lot of work. I know Sarah is like me. She'll call me at 7:00 in the morning. She'll be like, 'I just had an idea. What if we do this?' I'm like, 'Okay. Great.' Our minds are constantly going. But it's really cool when you finally get here."

The Halloween Show's Set

De la O's department also is in charge of the set, which this year takes its inspiration from Disney's Haunted Mansion attraction. "For the 100th anniversary, everybody had an idea of what the set should be, So we started big and just kept narrowing it down from there until we landed on the Haunted Mansion," she says.

That allowed them to be extra-creative with the technology. "There are so many elements in the Haunted Mansion, like the crystal ball with Madame Leota's head, that allowed us to step things up to another level," De la O teases. "And I think the most important thing about this whole thing is exactly what Jamie said earlier: this about very single department coming together in this Super Bowl that we do for The View . And it's just an amazing thing to literally start with this small idea and watch it blossom into this massive event where every department is doing their part to make it happen."

'The View' Crew

And some of those heroes, according to Hammer, are unsung.

"It is hair, makeup, wardrobe, and crew, no doubt about it. DGA team, no doubt about it. But there are so many people that also work so hard on this that don't necessarily always get the recognition," Hammer says.

She goes on: "The PAs pull every still and every track of music that's in there — which, there's probably 35 to 40 tracks of music in that show that they scour and send me. Our tape department... watch the show and count how many pieces of tape elements are in that. I tell them what I want, and it's a long list, and they pull every tape element. Every one of those bumpers. That open — Sarah sits with Rich, our editor, and she cuts that cold open with him, and Jamie and Brian, they edit those bumpers and those intros. It's a big process."

"It's so many people that I just want to make sure that that's known that it is really a View crew production," she adds. "It is not just producer. It is every single person, audience department, it's everybody. And that's so important that people understand that. That's the real magic, the teamwork that goes into this and the people who make it happen."

How ‘Barbie’s’ awards season hopes (mostly) fizzled at the Oscars

Eight months ago, on an otherwise quiet July weekend, two films — Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” and Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” — shared a release date and together, as Barbenheimer, became the cinematic event and cultural phenomenon of the summer. They seemingly set the stage for a pink-filled, explosive awards season.

But the recognition for the unlikely twins was hardly identical. While “Oppenheimer” pulled in 13 Oscar nominations, “Barbie” earned just eight.

While saluting the stunt community at Sunday’s ceremony, “Barbie’s” Ryan Gosling and “Oppenheimer’s” Emily Blunt — each nominated for their supporting roles in their respective films — playfully acknowledged the faceoff.

“I’m just happy we can finally put this Barbenheimer rivalry behind us,” Gosling told Blunt as they took the stage.

The Oscar-nominated actor led an ensemble of 65 dancers in the live rendition of the ‘Barbie’ musical number, with Mark Ronson and Simu Liu in tow.

March 10, 2024

Continuing the bit, Blunt kept it blunt : “That’s right — it’s Ken and Kitty, just leaving all that fodder in the dust. And the way this award season’s turned out, it wasn’t much of a rivalry. So, just let it go.”

“It’s true, you guys are doing very well, congratulations,” Gosling said, channeling his character’s finesse with a burn. “But, you know, I think I figured out why they called it Barbenheimer, and they didn’t call it Oppenbarbie. ... I think you guys are at the tail end of that, because you were riding ‘Barbie’s’ coattails all summer.”

Behind every joke, there is some truth. In the end, Barbie won one of its eight nominations — original song . “Oppenheimer” won seven of its 13, including best picture, lead actor for Cillian Murphy and director for Chrisopher Nolan — his first win.

“What Was I Made For?,” music and lyric by Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell, took home the sole trophy for “Barbie.”

“I’m so grateful for this song, and this movie and the way it made me feel. This goes out to everyone who was affected by this movie and how incredible it is,” Eilish said from the stage.

‘Barbie’ singer Billie Eilish becomes youngest person to win two Oscars

The 22-year-old singer-songwriter made history by winning the original song Oscar for her ‘Barbie’ ballad ‘What Was I Made For?’

But it wasn’t the haul many might have expected for a critically acclaimed, history-making blockbuster.

“I hadn’t expected [‘Barbie’] to plummet as a contender so clearly and so quickly early on,” said Stephen Galloway, dean of Chapman University’s film school. “Usually, it takes longer. There’s room for surprises.”

The film, starring Margot Robbie as the iconic blond plastic doll, saved the summer box office, becoming the highest-grossing film of the year with $636 million in North America and $1.4 billion globally to date. The impressive receipts also came with frenzied buzz, boosted by a dizzying amount of marketing tie-ins and Robbie’s impressive press-tour fashions inspired by actual looks worn by the famous doll over the years.

After months of living in a Barbie world, the academy rewarded the film with a more-than-respectable eight Oscar nominations, including for best picture. Two of its actors were nominated in supporting categories: Gosling, as Ken, and America Ferrera as Gloria , a frustrated working mom whose very human complications set off a crisis in Barbieland. Songs “I’m Just Ken” and “What Was I Made For?” made the original song category. It also was nominated for its costume and production design, and for its screenplay, by Gerwig and Noah Baumbach.

The 2024 Oscar winners list

Oscar winners “Oppenheimer,” “Poor Things,” Emma Stone and more took home Academy Awards during Sunday’s ceremony.

But the conversation on nominations morning in January was dominated instead by what “Barbie” wasn’t nominated for. Gerwig was left off the directing list, and Robbie, the titular star, who also executive produced the film, wasn’t nominated for lead actress. Numerous observers pointed out that these snubs reflected the same problems the film identified in the broader culture.

“The popular vote is never a guarantee of the establishment vote,” Galloway said. “In fact, the establishment has always been wary for them. If you look back at films that have emerged as classics, the most important of all time — Spielberg’s early films: ‘Jaws,’ ‘Close Encounters,’ ‘E.T,’ has he ever made better films? Not from my point of view, but they were not the ones that got awards. ‘Star Wars,’ which has probably influenced more of my students than any other film in history, no one even considered a serious contender for best picture. There’s always been a bit of a clash. And let’s face it, the establishment never recognized the avant-garde.”

Of course, “Oppenheimer,” a rare mix of box office clout and prestige, made for formidable competition. The film grossed nearly $1 billion worldwide and had all the makings of an Oscar darling: It was helmed by a long-admired director, tackled cerebral material in a serious manner and boasted a star-studded cast that included Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr. and Blunt.

All the best and worst moments of the 2024 Oscars, as they happened

“Oppenheimer” won several top awards, including best picture, director and lead actor, while lead actress went to Emma Stone for “Poor Things.” Billie Eilish won best song after Ryan Gosling performed “I’m Just Ken.”

It also came into the night on Sunday with plenty of hardware, including wins from the predictive trifecta of the Screen Actors Guild, the Directors Guild of America and the Producers Guild of America, as well as the Golden Globes and BAFTAs. “Barbie,” by contrast, was largely shut out at those major awards.

“Barbie’s” performance at the Oscars — or underperformance, as some might argue — highlights the motion picture academy’s ongoing struggle to balance the voting preferences of its members with the tastes of the filmgoing (and awards-show-watching) public.

Just as film studios have largely shifted toward tentpole and franchise fare in their output, the Oscar nominations have increasingly highlighted indie and international films. The pandemic underscored this evolution, with little-seen best picture winners “CODA” and “Nomadland” primarily distributed via streaming services. In turn, many have theorized that a lack of nominees and winners like box office behemoth “Titanic,” which took home best picture and 10 other Academy Awards during the highest-rated telecast ever in 1998, have contributed to the Oscars’ declining viewership.

All the looks from the 2024 Oscars red carpet

Here are all the looks from the 2024 Oscars red carpet, from Emma Stone to Emily Blunt, Lupita Nyong’o to Zendaya.

In 2018, the organization even considered establishing a “popular film” category to bring blockbuster-type movies into the broadcast but quickly shelved the idea. The Golden Globes introduced such a category this year.

Its first winner? “Barbie.”
