Star Trek: Prodigy 1×15 Review: “Masquerade”

Star Trek Prodigy Masquerade

In an episode that could have easily served as a finale, “Masquerade” answers one of  Star Trek: Prodigy ‘s most burning questions. It also basically completely changes the game, dropping a major bomb in the final scene.

“Masquerade” finds our intrepid  Protostar  crew limping along through the neutral zone. They’ve managed to evade Starfleet after their harrowing chase in last week’s episode , but with the ship damaged, there is only so much they can do. Luckily, Okana knows of a nearby starport that should have the materials necessary to fix the nacelles.

I really loved the opening sequence. Okana’s presence on the ship has obviously been getting to Dal. Dal has some of the best character development so far, yet he’s regressing the longer the charming rogue stays on board. His Captain’s Log, which had been sounding more and more like that of an actual Starfleet captain, went back to being flippant. He fantasizes about blasting Okana out of an airlock. It’s the perfect reminder that these are literal children.

Dal shouldn’t be comparing himself to Okana; he’s just a kid! Naturally, he’s not going to have the same kind of life experience as someone like Okana. But imposter syndrome is something everyone faces, and Dal’s insecurities have been on display for all to see for ages. His main issue with Okana is not how much he knows, but how well he knows himself. And Dal, who has no idea even what species he is, is envious of that.

The lingering question of “who is Dal?” and “where did Dal come from?” was answered in this episode. The grand mystery of why no one knows what species Dal is has a very logical answer: he’s essentially every species. Dal was created in a lab by Arik Soong , using various traits from approximately 26 different alien species. Dal is distraught to learn that he has no parents, no family. His entire journey so far has been learning about where he comes from, and it turns out that he technically comes from nowhere.

When faced with the potential to become a better version of himself, Dal originally declines, remembering Janeway’s warning that what sounds too good to be true usually is. However, he secretly gets the upgrade implant, which gives him brand new skills like telepathy and increased agility. Unfortunately, Janeway’s adage is proven correct when his new upgrade ends up leading them into trouble.

You see, the  Protostar wasn’t as sneaky as they thought they were when they camouflaged their ship to head into the neutral zone. The Romulans were fully aware of their presence and have followed them. They knew somehow that the  Protostar was valuable – whether it’s because they did a scan themselves or because they recognized the  Dauntless ‘s desperation in going after it.

Whatever the reason, the Romulans come after Dal because they need him to get into the ship’s systems. Dal takes the opportunity to turn on his fancy new upgrade, and it almost immediately goes haywire on him. He cycles through several species – including Klingon, Vulcan, and Tellarite – gaining new characteristics as he goes. At one point he produces some sort of ooze.

His telepathy alerts him of the danger, but he isn’t able to take advantage. One of their pursuers slips on the ooze. But in the end, Dal’s desire to better himself renders him virtually useless. Surprisingly, it’s Murf who comes to the rescue, leaping out of his little hamster ball and successfully taking out all of the Romulans.

“Masquerade” provides a valuable lesson on the importance of being yourself. Gwyn and Rok are against Dal getting the upgrades from the start, assuring him that he doesn’t need to be “fixed”; he’s fine the way he is. When he isn’t able to help in their time of need, despite being “made better”, he realizes that his insecurities are his worst enemy. He can’t take a shortcut and become worldly and knowledgeable like Okana. But as Gwyn points out, Okana abandoned them at the first sign of trouble, and Dal stayed. He’s a good person, and that’s what’s important.

I like how apparently with every episode,  Prodigy is going to introduce a new area of science, using Rok as a vessel. We’ve had physics, climatology, and now genetics.

Back on the  Dauntless , real!Janeway faces an impossible decision. She can’t violate their treaty with the Romulans to pursue the  Protostar  into the Neutral Zone. But at the same time, she can’t let the Romulans acquire the  Protostar . When it seems as though the Romulans are going to win, they fire torpedoes at the ship, hoping to cripple its systems but not harm any of its crew. Thankfully, due to Murf’s amazing combat prowess, they’re able to divert the torpedoes before any damage is done.

I go back and forth as to what’s going on in Janeway’s head. Last week, learning that the  Protostar was crewed by children definitely gave her pause. I have to believe that she was going back over Frex’s statement, second-guessing everything he told her. But she still pursued the kids with single-minded determination, seemingly not interested in giving them a chance to explain.

In “Masquerade”, upon learning that the kids somehow managed to defeat an elite Romulan strike force, she seems reluctantly impressed. She must recognize that there is something special about these kids. I can only hope that she gives them the benefit of the doubt when they next meet face-to-face.

As for the huge bombshell that got dropped in the final moments of the episode, can you believe that Ascencia is actually Vau N’Akat? I’ve been getting weird vibes from her since the beginning, and in “Crossroads”, I found it odd that she seemed to be so close to the Diviner. And her reaction to the  Protostar not being destroyed seemed very shady. Now I understand why. She knows who the Diviner is, she knows what his mission is, and she has the same mission.

I am blown away by this revelation. How long has Ascencia been undercover? Does she know what happened to Chakotay? I always assumed that the Diviner’s desire for vengeance against Starfleet was his own obsession. Is hatred for Starfleet a commonality among the Vau N’Akat?

Not only that, but Drednok is alive! How is Drednok alive? More importantly, how did he end up with Ascencia?

While this episode could have easily served as a season or mid-season finale, I’m extremely glad that it didn’t. That means we only have to wait one week to find out what happens next, instead of months. And I am so very excited to see what happens next.

STAR TREK: PRODIGY Recap: (S01E15) Masquerade

Major revelations about Captain Dal R’el ( Brett Gray ) and action-packed adventure make “Masquerade” a can’t-miss episode of Star Trek: Prodigy . Season 1 episode 15 was written by Nikhil S. Jayaram and directed by Sung Shin.

Protostar Captain’s Log, Stardate… “Aw, who cares?” Dal says they’ve escaped Starfleet by entering the Neutral Zone. However they need to get their third nacelle fixed before they can really travel again.

Jankom Pog (Jason Mantzoukas) stomps out a fire on the Protostar.

Jankom Pog ( Jason Mantzoukas ) is assisted in putting out a fire by Okona ( Billy Campbell ). Dal says that Murf is getting used to his new body while everyone gets used to the new Murf.

Murf careens about the Protostar firing a pair of phasers. He is pursued by Rok-Tahk ( Rylee Alazraqui ) and Zero ( Angus Imrie ). Okona captures Murf in a hamster-ball type device.

Dal is annoyed by his crew’s reaction to Okona. But he’s outright seething as Gwyn ( Ella Purnell ) has an animated conversation with the older man. That’s when Okona accidentally puts his hand on a panel and is ejected from the ship! But this is revealed to be Dal’s fantasy.

On the Protostar bridge, Gwyn asks Dal if he found a starport. In addition to toasting the protodrive, the blast put Hologram Janeway ( Kate Mulgrew ) on the fritz. They need to find a place to dock for repairs. Zero senses that Dal is “utterly clueless.”

In Star Trek: Prodigy's 'Masquerade', Brett Gray as Dal, Kete MUlgrew as Janeway, Thadiun Okona as Billy Campbell and Jason Mantzoukas as Jankom Pog. They are on the bridge of the Protostar, examining a holographic projection of Noble Isle.

Somebody meme this image already!

Okona suggests they “park and patch up” at the starport Noble Isle.

Chain of Command

Meanwhile, aboard the Dauntless , Vice Admiral Janeway is facing off with Romulan warbirds on the edge of the Neutral Zone. Janeway urges Admiral Edward Jellico ( Ronny Cox ) to reconsider. She says there are kids on a disabled ship in the Neutral Zone. The Romulans want the ship’s tech.

Jellico says that the Romulans may be untrustworthy but the Federation is finally working towards peace with them. The Dauntless is not to enter the Neutral Zone for any reason. Jellico orders Janeway to destroy the Protostar should the Romulans attempt to steal it.

The Protostar arrives at Noble Isle. A spacedock is connected to the planet’s surface by way of a space elevator. Because of ion storms, there’s no communication or beaming down to the planet.

RELATED: Star Trek: Lower Decks recap (S03E02) The Least Dangerous Game

Okona explains that since Noble Isle is outside Federation jurisdiction, it is a site for otherwise outlawed science.

Okona asks who is ready for shore leave. Dal clarifies that this isn’t shore leave, it’s a mission to fix the ship. Zero and Jankom will remain aboard the Protostar while the rest of the crew forms an away team.

Hologram Janeway cautions Dal that the science here is unregulated. She tells him the Federation has laws about science for a reason. She cautions him that if something seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Rok takes in the sights as the away team rides the orbital lift down. A holographic advertisement activates. Doctor Jago ( Amy Hill ) implores the target demographic not to let their “genes impede [their] dreams.” Jago says her genetic augmentation process can bring out the best in anyone. Okona says Jago is who he’s here to see.

In Jago’s lab, a giddy Rok identifies a DNA double helix as well as the chemical bases adenine, cytosine and guanine. Jago appears and adds “thymine.” Jago says Okona is late with her gelatinous putrescine. Okona informs Jago that her shipment has been permanently misplaced. He promises to make it up to her, but she says he already has.

Thadiun Okona as Billy Campbell and Amy Hill as Dr. Torgo

Okona makes excuses to Jago.

She approaches Dal and asks about this “specimen.” She eagerly lists Dal’s physical features. Gwyn asks if she’s seen someone like him before and Jago says his origins are obvious. Dal asks if she knows where he came from. Jago says not “where,” but “who.”

RELATED:  Star Trek: Picard  recap (S02E05) Fly Me to the Moon

Jago plucks one of Dal’s hairs for a DNA sample. After analyzing it, her suspicions are confirmed. She tells him he’s the handiwork of the proteges of Dr. Eric Soong, a Federation-defected geneticist.

Dal is “the product of artificial hybrid speciation.” Rok explains this is when the DNA of different species is combined to create an original. Jago reveals that Dal’s base DNA sample was human. He’s “human augment, blended with the recessive traits of 26 species.” These include Vulcan and proto-Organian.

Doctor Jago’s Implant

Dal struggles to come to grips with the fact that he’s an augment, realizing he has no parents. Rok says being unique is cool. Okona says it’s a tough break. Gwyn says he’s more than his DNA.

But Jago’s starts the sales pitch. As Rok explains to Dal in layman’s terms, at the push of a button, Dal’s recessive traits can be brought forward. Dal remember’s Hologram Janeway’s warning. He tells Jago it’s not what they’re here for.

Soon Okona is leading the away team to the salvage yard followed by a meal. But Dal stays behind and turns to Jago, asking her about how long the procedure takes.

On the Dauntless , The Diviner ( John Noble ) sits in conversation with Ensign Ascencia ( Jameela Jamil ). He says he has some greater purpose. Ascencia asks him what that is.

Vice Admiral Janeway enters and says she was told Ascencia wanted to speak with her. Ascencia offers her services infiltrating the Neutral Zone. Janeway says that would disobey a direct order. But Ascencia says she knows how much the Protostar means to her.

Janeway says if they can’t abide by the rule of law, they’re no better than the forces they oppose. However, Janeway states that if they’re considering sneaking in, so are the Romulans. She orders Ascencia to find a way to eavesdrop on all Romulan subchannels.

Tal Shi’ar

On Noble Isle, a Tal Shi’ar (Romulan intelligence agency) shock team lead by Commander Kaseth ( Kimberly Brooks ) beams in. They take in the Protostar .

On the planet, Okona is recounting the events of Star Trek: The Next Generation  season 2 episode 3, “The Outrageous Okona.” However, Dal appears and reveals Okona misrepresented his motivation. He took the job because it would give him a story to woo anyone’s heart.

Okona wonders how he could know that. Unless he’s a mind reader. Dal laughs.

rett Gray as Dal, Rylee Alazraqui as Rok-Tahk and Zero, Ella Purnell as Gwyn. They have been taken hostage at phaser point.

Dal’s got an ace up his sleeve. Or does he?

Gwyn asks if Dal’s feeling better. He answers that he’s fine. He acts like the revelation he just learned was no big deal. Plus, he continues to speak with uncharacteristically polysyllabic words. Overall, he’s acting strange.

On the Protostar , Jankom and Zero are incapacitated by a Romulan weapon. Meanwhile, Hologram Janeway’s holo matrix is disabled. However, the systems are locked: the Romulans need the captain to access the ship’s system. They activate antigrav suits and leap towards the planet.

RELATED:  Star Trek: Lower Decks recap (S03E08) Crisis Point 2: Paradoxus

On the Dauntless , Ascencia reports that the Tal Shi’ar have discovered the Protostar . They are now hunting for the captain. Janeway doesn’t like their odds.

Commander Tysess ( Daveed Diggs ) reports “minimum-yield micro-torpedos, tight cluster, armed and ready, Admiral.” Ascencia is incredulous that Janeway would destroy the Protostar . Janeway says they can’t let the Romulans take it.

Confrontation

At Noble Isle, Rok takes in a trio of brightly-colored puppies. Dal senses that something isn’t right and urges them to leave. But that’s when the Tal Shi’ar repel down the building and surround the Protostar crew.

The Tal Shi’ar advance and demand the captain accompany them. They assume this to be Okona. Dal laughs and outs himself as captain in the process. Okona says he’s overstayed his welcome and exits.

Murf is restless. The Tal Shi’ar tells the Protostar crew to stand still. Dal chuckles and uses the appendage on his head to activate the implant that Jago gave him. The nanoprobes in his blood engage. The effect is immediate: Dal bests the Tal Shi’ar.

There’s also an effect on his appearance. His facial features and fingers both begin to change, offering familiar Trek alien vibes.

Brett Gray as Dal, who has grown antennae, more facial hair, pointed ears, and Klingon forehead ridges.

A face only a Soong could love?

Rok realizes Dal got the implant. Gwyn says she doesn’t think he was meant to juice the implant as much as he did. Before they can converse further, the awakening Tal Shi’ar warriors compel them to flee.

In the next scene, Dal’s appearance has changed even further. He has antennae and Vulcan-style ears. He reasons that by maxing out his dermal implant, he activated all of his dormant DNA simultaneously. In the style of a Tellarite, Dal says he’d do it all over again. Then he says he either senses more danger, or he’s about to grow a third arm.

Ella Purnell as Gwyn, Brett Gray as Dal and Rylee Alazraqui as Rok-Tahk. Dal has become even more mutated than in the previous scene, with a Tellarite style nose and fangs.

Rok and Gwyn agree they need to get him to sick bay.

Space Elevator

The Protostar away team reaches the orbital lift. Dal reacts with horror to his reflection in the mirror. His body continues to gurgle.

Elevators appear on either side of the one the away team is in. Each are filled with Tal Shi’ar warriors. They begin firing phasers at the lift in which the away team is riding. The glass cracks.

Ella Purnell as Gwyn, Rylee Alazraqui as Rok-Tahk, Angus Imrie as Zero and Brett Gray as Dal, and Dee Bradley Baker as Murf. They are all wearing EV suits (well, Murf's in a ball) as they ride the orbital lift. Dal is looking as the substance he has just secreted, which is on his hands and Murf's ball.

Cleanup on orbital lift 5… Cleanup on orbital lift 5.

Gwyn activates emergency equipment and orders everyone to don environment suits. Rok assures Murf he’ll be fine, as he’s indestructible. Dal says maybe his super DNA can help. However, he just produces a viscous blue substance he can’t identify. Some of it falls on Murf’s ball and causes him to vomit.

RELATED: Trek on Trek: 7 Meta  Star Trek  Episodes

The glass of the lift breaks. The Tal Shi’ar are now firing directly at the away team. One of them jumps to the away team’s elevator but slips and falls on Dal’s secretion.

The Tal Shi’ar pull out a big weapon. Rok notes it is composed of metal. She tells Gwyn to withdraw her heirloom. A few moments later, lightning strikes. Drawn to the metal weapons, it incapacitates several Tal Shi’ar. Gwyn tells Dal to hold on, they’re almost through.

Torpedoes Away

On the Dauntless , Ascencia reports that she can’t tell what’s happening. In spite of Asencia’s protestations, Janeway says they have no choice. She activates the torpedoes.

The Tal Shi’ar’s sustained fire on the away team’s elevator is causing ominous shaking. Murf is freaking out. Dal shouts, “Open the ball!”

Rylee Alazraqui as Rok-Tahk as Dee Bradley Baker as Murf. Murf is leaving the ball being held by Rok-Tahk.

“I’m comin’ out!”

Murf springs over to the Tal Shi’ar’s orbital lift. He makes quick work of the enemies. Then he returns to his ball. “Looks like we found our new security officer,” remarks Gwyn.

RELATED:  Star Trek:  8 Trek Pets

Meanwhile, the torpedoes have almost reached the Protostar . The away team sees them approaching and Dal wonders, “What now?” However, Ascencia reports that the Tal Shi’ar have failed in their mission. Janeway orders the torpedoes aborted. At the last moment, the torpedoes veer off and explode in space.

“Who are these kids?” wonders Janeway. Ascencia leaves the bridge.

On the away team’s lift, Dal apologizes for messing things up. He tells Gwyn he just wants her to look at him like she looks at Okona.

Gwyn says he’ll never be as good as Okona. Because Okona left them, Dal is better. Murf stretches his body to cover the open windows of the elevator as they reach the top of the orbital lift.

Back on the Protostar , Rok records a Science Log. She can afford this luxury now that Murf is the new security officer.

Jankom is working hard on fixing the Protostar nacelle. Zero and Rok successfully removed Dal’s implant in advance of any permanent chances.

Rok says, “If there’s anything we learned while visiting Noble Isle, it’s science rules… and science needs rules. And, it’s our imperfections that make us who we are.” The triumphant crew celebrates their victory.

On the Dauntless , Ascencia bursts into The Diviner’s room and declares they need a change. She says they’re running out of time and orders Drednok (Jimmi Simpson) to activate. The Diviner’s table falls away to reveal Drednok, who says, “There is no barrier we cannot overcome.”

Ascencia presses an implant on the back of her neck and reveals herself as a Vau N’Akat.

“You weren’t the only one sent back to find the ship,” she says.

It was already shown in (at least) Croatia and Hungary, apparently Edit: France, Netherlands, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore also seem to have seen episodes 15 and 16 already

Better episode this week. The kids didn't seem dumb, except for Dal but he was trying to find out who he really was. The ending was an unexpected twist, considering I was starting to really like Asencia. It is nice to get Drednock back though, as when the credits were rolling I was wondering why Simpson hadn't been in the series that much. I think my only negative is I'm sick and tired of the Soong family and how often modern trek is going back to that well. For one, I don't think Kids watched Enterprise, and two, can they come up with something away from Soong? The Augment Arc in Enterprise was decent if a little annoying, and I didn't expect that to come back to a Kids show like Prodigy. Hopefully there is more to Dal's mystery than that or else I might be a little disappointed. 8

I swear Drednok is a Decepticon, he's more than "Meets the Eye". I really wasn't expecting him to be disguised as the friggin coffee table.
Arik was >250 years before - did he raise more augment kids who then had grandkids who made Dal? Jellico, I guess Nice Voyager model I thought they have science advisors? XD

Seconding the feeling that the Soongs are more than a little overplayed. But that was a small niggle in an otherwise enjoyable episode. As usual, I just wanna give these kids massive hugs. And the new Tal Shiar tac suits look fantastic! So if Dal is an augment, does that mean he's automatically barred from Starfleet?

‘Star Trek: Prodigy’ 1×15 Review: “Masquerade”

Star Trek: Prodigy episode 1x15 "Crossroads"

Wow! What a banger of an episode! Episode 1×15 of Star Trek: Prodigy really lived up to its title—“Masquerade.” We’ve got full spoilers ahead, so consider this your RED ALERT! Use those “Hold Onto Your Butts” grab handles and let’s find out who’s who in “Masquerade.”

Star Trek: Prodigy episode 1x15 "Crossroads"

One of the big themes in Star Trek: Prodigy episode 1×15, “Masquerade” is identity. Dal’s been trying to figure out who he is and when he finds out he’s merely a lab experiment gone wrong, he’s devastated. Who wouldn’t be? That’s a tough thing to find out about yourself. I love what Rok-Tahk and Gwyn have to say about him.

“You’re one of a kind.”

“It doesn’t change how we feel about you.”

Even with their kind words, it’s hard for Dal to accept them. The emotional journey he takes to finally accept himself is very satisfying to watch. It’s also a lot of fun for long-time Trek fans to watch. I noticed a Vulcan, an Andorian, a Tellarite, and a Klingon, among others, in Dal’s DNA. The Klingon symbol is the only one I recognized. If you caught more, I want to hear about it! But the real Easter egg here is that Dal was created in a lab by some students of Arik Soong . Does this mean we’ll have Brent Spiner show up in Prodigy ? We’ll just have to watch and find out!

Star Trek: Prodigy episode 1x15 "Crossroads"

Murf: Now with Kung Fu Grip!

One of the highlights of “Masquerade” for me is watching Murf get used to his new body and the crew getting used to it as well. I love the idea of a Murf hamster ball, but I love the idea of Murf now being the security officer even more! Jokingly, I said in our coverage of episode 1×13 on We Are Starfleet that maybe Murf would be like Jack Jack on The Incredibles once he emerged from his chrysalis. I never imagined I would actually be right! That was a delightful surprise. Murf’s chaotic energy is about to be used, and I can’t wait to see him in action.

star trek prodigy 1x15

The End of the Masquerade

The biggest surprise in Star Trek: Prodigy episode 1×15, “Masquerade” is the big reveal that Ensign Asencia isn’t a Trill at all. She’s a Vau N’Akat that was also sent back in time to destroy the Federation. It definitely took me by surprise, but my fellow co-host of We Are Starfleet , Craig McKenzie definitely called it in last week’s episode of our show! I didn’t suspect her at all, so good on Craig for picking that up. What I’m going to enjoy the most about this reveal is watching Jameela Jamil play a villain. She’s going to really relish this role for sure.

Final Thoughts

I’m not surprised that Okona turned tail and ran in “Masquerade.” He’s fun, but he’s also got a really high sense of self-preservation. However, I wouldn’t be surprised if he popped up again by the end of the season. I mentioned in last week’s review that he’s got a Han Solo vibe about him. I bet he comes back a la Han Solo in A New Hope .

The Dauntless crew is really walking the line as close as they can with the Neutral Zone. Of course, the Romulans are trying to find the Protostar, but our crew manages to neutralize them with the aid of Kung Fu Grip Murf. I’ve got to think that it’s only a matter of time before Janeway says, “To hell with the Neutral Zone” and goes in. We’ll just have to wait and find out.

What did you think about Star Trek: Prodigy episode 1×15, “Masquerade”? Leave me a comment and let’s talk Trek .

The next episode of Star Trek: Prodigy will air on December 1, 2022, on Paramount+.

Star Trek: Prodigy

  • View history

Star Trek: Prodigy is an animated series that premiered on 28 October 2021 , first on the streaming service Paramount+ , then on Nickelodeon , [1] a conglomerate sister broadcasting channel. It is the ninth Star Trek spin-off and the third animated Star Trek series, following Star Trek: The Animated Series and Star Trek: Lower Decks . Unlike the previous animated series, this is the first to be rendered entirely with computer-generated imaging and 3D modeling. Previously, the Star Trek: Short Treks episode " The Girl Who Made the Stars " was produced in a similar fashion. Two seasons were produced before the series' cancellation on 23 June 2023 .

Alex Kurtzman stated that unlike Lower Decks , Prodigy will be kid-focused with an " entirely different perspective and an entirely different tone, " adding, " What's exciting about it is not only looking at each animated series as what's the different tone, but what's the different technology we can apply to these things so that visually they're entirely different? " [6]

In February 2019, it was announced Nickelodeon had entered talks to air the show, and Trollhunters writers and executive producers Kevin and Dan Hageman had boarded the project. [7]

On 24 April 2019 , it was revealed that the series would indeed air (but not debut) on Nickelodeon and focus on a group of lawless teenage characters finding a derelict Starfleet ship which they use to " search for adventure, meaning and salvation. " [8]

In May 2019, CBS filed trademarks for the titles " Star Trek: Section 31 " and " Star Trek: Prodigy ", with posts on Reddit later in the year attaching the Prodigy title to the second animated series. [9]

On 23 July 2020, it was revealed that the show would, in fact, be named Star Trek: Prodigy , and that it would air on Nickelodeon in 2021. [10] [11] The premiere episode did air on the channel on 17 December 2021, but on that occasion it was an one-time-only affair. [12] It was eventually announced that the first ten episodes (parts 1 and 2) would belatedly air regularly on a repetitive basis on the broadcaster in the home market one year later, starting on 8 July 2022 . [13]

In 2022 , Prodigy 's first season was nominated for "Outstanding Animated Series" in the inaugural Children’s & Family Emmy Awards , and won the Emmy for "Outstanding Individual Achievement in Production Design." [14]

In 2023 , Prodigy 's first season was nominated for a Television Critics Association Award in "Outstanding Achievement in Family Programming," a category with both animated and live action content intended for family and young adult audiences. [15]

Development

In July 2019 , the Hagemans announced the full writers' room for the show. [20] Among those revealed to be writing the series are Trollhunters writer-producers Aaron Waltke and Chad Quandt , The 100 writer-producers Shawna Benson and Julie Benson , Black Sails writer Lisa Boyd , Shades of Blue writer Nikhil Jayaram , and Diandra Pendleton-Thompson .

In October 2019 , Kurtzman said that this series will be animated in a digital 3D style, like Ninjago or Trollhunters , as opposed to the more "cartoon" look of Star Trek: Lower Decks . He also confirmed that the series had been picked up for a two-season order, and that a title had been chosen for the series, but he was not yet ready to reveal it. [21]

In the same interview, Heather Kadin said that, due to the time-consuming process of 3D animation, the series would likely air later than 2021 . Kadin also emphasized that the Hagemans' writing style will be accessible to kids without patronizing them or alienating their parents:

" The reason we went to the Hagemans is because if you've seen their work, you know that they're not writing " Muppet Babies ". It's not "Little Spock and Little Kirk." It's not playing down [to viewers] that way. " " Even [with] their characters in Ninjago – they are teenagers – I was able to watch that with my kids and they write with a very epic quality. They tell stories the way we tell stories in live action: serialized, turning over cards… " " I think it will be a great way for fans to introduce the franchise to their kids, and for new fans to be formed, because it's such a big franchise, [it can be hard] to get into as a kid. " [22]

In an October 2020 interview with Trek Report , producer and writer Aaron Waltke said that Prodigy aims to bridge the gap between old and new iterations of the Star Trek franchise , with a series that strikes a tone of hope and idealism. [23]

" It's been exhilarating to make a series that honors classic Trek for legacy fans like myself, but also provides an entry point for new audiences to be introduced to the world of the Federation and its aspirations for an idealistic future, even when facing adversity. Writing the return of our beloved Voyager captain feels oddly iconic, like a homecoming for me. And we hope to create something both young and old can watch together… just as I once did with my dad all those many years ago. " [24]

In February 2021 , it was announced that Prodigy would debut on Paramount+ in 2021. An image of the alien bridge crew was also released. [25]

On First Contact Day in April 2021 , the Hagemans revealed that the series will be set in the Delta Quadrant in 2383 . They also revealed an image of Captain Janeway as she will appear in the series, and explained that the character will appear as an emergency training hologram on board the starship. A new summary of the series' premise was also released:

Prodigy " will follow a motley crew of young aliens who must figure out how to work together while navigating a greater galaxy, in search for a better future. These six young outcasts know nothing about the ship they have commandeered – a first in the history of the Star Trek Franchise – but over the course of their adventures together, they will each be introduced to Starfleet and the ideals it represents. " [26]

In May 2021 , more details about the cast were released, with the main voice cast revealed. [27]

On 23 July 2021 , a teaser trailer was released during the Paramount+ Star Trek Comic-Con@Home panel, revealing the first animated footage of the series along with the first look and name of the vessel, the USS Protostar . [28]

The series' opening title sequence was publicly released on 31 August 2021 , as part of a Paramount+ presentation to the Television Critics Association . This presentation also confirmed that the series' theme music had been composed by Michael Giacchino , and the music for the series would be composed by Nami Melumad . [29]

Star Trek Prodigy - Meet the Cast

In June 2019 , Eaglemoss/Hero Collector 's project manager Ben Robinson indicated that the company would manufacture starship miniatures from this series, [30] though that intent was thwarted by the company's bankruptcy on 5 August 2022.

On 13 July 2021 , ViacomCBS Consumer Products and Playmates Toys jointly announced that the latter had acquired new licensing for "action figures, vehicles and ships, role play and other toy categories," and slated the first of these products for retail release in 2022. Among other Star Trek series and films, this licensing encompasses Star Trek: Prodigy , Star Trek: Lower Decks , Star Trek: Discovery , and Star Trek: Picard . [31]

On 18 August 2022 , it was announced that two new tie-in books, Supernova (also the title of a video game releasing in October 2022 ) and A Dangerous Trade would be released on 17 January 2023 . [32]

Cancellation and pick-up

On 23 June 2023, Prodigy was cancelled by Paramount+. While Season 2 was allowed to finish post-production, it, along with the series as a whole, would be sold to any interested third-party outsider. [33] The series removal from Paramount+ was effectuated three days later, on 26 June 2023. [34] The series was on Nickelodeon already on a broadcast hiatus, and therefore not to return afterwards. [2]

Paramount did not provide a clear reason for the completely unexpected cancellation. News sites such as TrekMovie.com , ScreenRant, and Inverse suggested that the cancellation was motivated by cost-cutting measures and tax write-offs, whereas Paramount itself had intimated in a statement to TrekMovie.com that it was part of clearing the way of the upcoming merger of Paramount+ with Showtime by " refining our content offering to deliver the best streaming experience for subscribers ". Paramount concurrently assured TrekMovie.com that it remained stoutly "invested in growing the Star Trek franchise". The decision to place Prodigy outside the realm of that same franchise and offer it up to third-party outsiders however, was counter to their " Star Trek Universe" all-under-one-roof franchise umbrella concept instituted at the start of 2021 . [35] [36] [37]

On 21 July 2023 , showrunner Aaron Waltke announced on his Twitter account that the entire first season had become available for digital purchase at digital vendors like Prime Video , ITunes Store , Google, and others. Up until that point only the first ten episodes had been available, which was conforming to the recent physical PRO Season 1, Volume 1 DVD and Blu-ray home video format releases. [38] While the franchise had intimated that the series had not performed to expectations, Prodigy had managed in the meantime to gather a fanbase of its own, which had resulted in a run on the DVD and Blu-ray stocks still available at retailers at the time of the cancellation announcement, causing them to sell out quickly in the home market. [39]

Aside from that, this fanbase also tried to organize an online campaign to save the series. [40] On 24 August 2023 , in an effort to find the show another home, a fan raised US$1,200 on GoFundMe to have an airplane tow a banner reading, "#SAVE STAR TREK PRODIGY" over the Los Angeles offices of streaming services Netflix , Amazon Prime , and Hulu . [41] A drawing with the same hashtag is set to be among the items going to space on a Blue Origin (part of the empire of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos ) flight. [42]

Kevin Hageman expressed in an interview that his desire was to see a third season come to fruition, that will eventually lead up to an animated film series. [43]

On 11 October 2023 , it was Netflix that announced that they had picked up Prodigy , with season two set to premier in 2024 , [44] [45] after season one had debuted on the streaming service later in 2023 on 25 December. [46] [47] A consequence of this is that if Hageman is to see his hopes for post-season two productions come true, he has to convince Netflix to pay for the entirety of the production costs, as the franchise itself has distanced itself from Prodigy . [3] This could turn out to be a tall order for Hageman, considering Netflix's prior experience with the first three seasons of Discovery (see: Netflix: Footnote ), despite Prodigy hardly having caused any division within " Trekdom ", if any at all, as opposed to Discovery .

One such market concerned the Netherlands and Flanders, where the in the Dutch language dubbed version of the show debuted for an one-time run on the local Nickelodeon Benelux channel on 18 April 2022 , albeit the first ten episodes (parts 1 and 2) only. [1] Repetitive regular airing of the entire first season started on 31 October 2022 in support of the local Paramount+ encompassing SkyShowtime which had been launched in the country six days earlier, and where Prodigy was included in its startup content catalog.

  • ↑ There was very little doubt left, if any at all, that the franchise had no intent whatsoever to pay even a single penny more for Prodigy beyond the season two post-production completion, after they had taken their definitive leave of the series in their official statement, "Star Trek: Prodigy will not be returning for the previously announced second season. On behalf of everyone at Paramount+, Nickelodeon, and CBS Studios, we want to thank Kevin and Dan Hageman, Ben Hibon , Alex Kurtzman, and the Secret Hideout team, along with the fantastic cast and crew for all their hard work and dedication bringing the series to life. This eight-part feature focuses on the seven main Prodigy cast (Dal, Gwyn, Jankom Pog, Rok-Tahk, Zero, Murf, and Hologram Janeway), along with some interviews with a few of the cast who voice each character, and comments from the show runners on the assembled cast. Senior director Ben Hibon and the Prodigy animation team also share their insights on the design of each character.

The interview segments generally contain information shared in other forums over the last two years, but for those who don’t follow Trek news the way the rest of us do, it’s a nice recap of the desire to build an “on ramp” for younger viewers to find their way into Star Trek fandom.

Eight-part feature, spending time with Prodigy prop designer Jack Rossi and concept artist Gus Mendonça as they run through some of the primary props and devices found around the USS Protostar. The discussions range from adding necessary detailing to the mess hall replicators, bridging the look of Starfleet technology to its most recent in-universe designs (in Star Trek: Voyager), how the ship’s Vehicle Replicator serves as a lesson learned from the USS Voyager’s seemingly-endless collection of shuttlecraft, and that the inspiration for the Runaway off-road-vehicle design came from Mendonça’s dog.

Special 6 The USS Protostar

  • 2023-01-03T08:00:00Z — 14 m

Eight-part feature focuses on the hero starship of Star Trek: Prodigy, with Hibon and several other members of the art and animation teams commenting on their design process for both the exterior and interior sections of the ship “sets.” Along with the starship itself, other short spotlight time is spent discussing the bridge, the transporter room, crew quarters, engineering, the holodeck, the ship’s three warp nacelles, and the hangar bay.

Development [ ].

In June 2018, after becoming sole showrunner of the series Star Trek: Discovery , Alex Kurtzman signed a five-year overall deal with CBS Television Studios to expand the Star Trek franchise beyond Discovery to several new series, miniseries, and animated series. [6] After the announcement of adult animated comedy Star Trek: Lower Decks , Kurtzman said in January 2019 that there would be at least one more animated series released as part of his expansion. This would be a "kids-focused" series that could potentially be released on a different network from the more adult-focused streaming service CBS All Access where the other Star Trek series under Kurtzman are released. Kurtzman said other animated series would be different from Lower Decks in both tone and visual style, with the latter potentially being achieved through the use of different technology. [7]

Kevin and Dan Hageman joined the series as writers by mid-February 2019, when Nickelodeon was in talks to air the series as its viewers match the series' younger target audience. The project was expected to be a "major tentpole series" for the network under its new president Brian Robbins . [8] A month later, Kurtzman confirmed the project and said negotiations with Nickelodeon were almost complete. He expected the series to be ready for release in 2021 or 2022. [9] Nickelodeon officially ordered the series in late April 2019, with the Hageman brothers confirmed to be writing and executive producing the series alongside Kurtzman, Secret Hideout's Heather Kadin, Rod Roddenberry (the son of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry) and Trevor Roth of Roddenberry Entertainment, and CBS Television's animation executive Katie Krentz. [10] Kadin revealed in October 2019 that the series had received a two-season order from Nickelodeon due to the animation work required for the series, and said it would feature serialized elements. She explained that the Hagemans were hired due to their work on previous children's series that were not "playing down" to the audience and were still watchable for older viewers. Kadin felt the series would be something that older Star Trek fans could watch with their children to introduce them to the franchise since "it’s such a big franchise, [it can be hard] to get into as a kid". [11]

In an article on the Star Trek franchise in January 2020, The Wall Street Journal listed the series as Star Trek: Prodigy . [12] This title was officially confirmed in July, along with a 2021 release date. Ramsey Naito was overseeing the series for Nickelodeon as EVP of Animation Production and Development. [13] Ben Hibon was announced as director, co-executive producer, and creative lead for the series in August 2020. Naito described Hibon as "an incredible storyteller and a world builder with a distinct vision" for the series. [14] Kurtzman said work on the series' animation was "barreling ahead, full steam ahead" in contrast to the live-action Star Trek series which had been delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Release [ ]

Star Trek: Prodigy premiered as a streaming exclusive television series on Paramount+ in 2021. Originally intended as a Nickelodeon exclusive, the series would air there at a later date. [13] [15] [16]

On March 2023, Paramount+ reconfirmed season two of the series. [17] However, on 23 June 2023, the streaming platform revealed a number of productions that would be discarted from the service, Star Trek Prodigy not only was unexpectedly incluyed in that list, but was also revealed to have cancelled production and that it would also leave Nickelodeon's schedule. It was also announced that the second season of Prodigy would finish post-production and be shopped around to other streaming services outside the Paramount Global conglomerate, such as Netflix. [18]

This decision was met with heavy backlash from fans of both the show and the franchise, as a proper reason for the cancellation was not given at the time. [19] This notably marks the first time a Nickelodeon series cancels production during an effectuated renewal order.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Nostalgic Title Sequences Were Unplanned

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds opening

Three of the 12 "Star Trek" shows to date begin with the same familiar narration, which was originally spoken by Captain Kirk (William Shatner) in 1966:

"Space, the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise, its five-year mission to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before."

For "Star Trek: The Next Generation" (1987) and "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" (2022), "no man" was changed to "no one." "Next Generation" was also a "continuing mission" and not a "five-year mission." That narration has come to represent the ethos of the entire "Star Trek" franchise, highlighting that the various shows and movies are about exploration, new life, and going boldly. Unlike the title crawl of "Star Wars," there is no talk of conflict, conquering enemies, or asserting dominance. In the original series, the narration played over a gentle opening fanfare composed by Alexander Courage. "Next Generation" used the same opening music, but blended it with Jerry Goldsmith's theme from 1979's "Star Trek: The Motion Picture."

For "Strange New Worlds," the theme was composed by Jeff Russo (from the band Tonic), and only distantly quoted the Courage theme. Russo's music plays over a title sequence that many Trek shows have employed, that is: glory shots of a Federation vessel soaring through the stars (or sitting still in them, in the case of "Deep Space Nine"), encountering weird planets, other ships, or unusual spatial phenomena.

In a 2022 interview with Syfy , "Strange New Worlds" showrunner Henry Alonso Myers admitted that the classic narration was not an original part of the plan for the "Strange New Worlds" title sequence. The pilot's director inserted it as a placeholder, but the show's producers loved it so much, they kept it.

Space, the final frontier...

The pilot episode of "Strange New Worlds," also called "Strange New Worlds" (May 5, 2022), was directed by Akiva Goldsman, who also serves as one of the show's executive producers. Meyers noted that it was all Goldsman's idea, saying:

"In the first director's cut of the pilot that Akiva did, he just put a new version of the old ' Trek' opening titles sequence in, just like a placeholder. [...] And we sort of loved it."

It seems that when they first screened an incomplete version of the "Strange New Worlds" pilot, the theme sequence hadn't been made yet. To indicate that the show would indeed have a title sequence before every episode, Goldman mocked up a temp sequence that was merely the original "Star Trek" theme with the credits altered. This was fitting, as "Strange New Worlds" is set aboard the exact same starship as the original "Star Trek," and even features several of the same characters (Kirk, Spock, Pike, Uhura, Dr. M'Benga, Nurse Chapel, Number One, Scotty, and T'Pring appear in both shows). Meyers said that the executives loved the sequence, as it directly linked the new series to the classic 1960s "Trek."

"Star Trek" is currently in a state of contraction . "Picard" recently ended and both "Prodigy" and "Discovery" will end after their next seasons. "Short Treks" is kind of over, and "Section 31" will be released as a movie instead of a series. We will soon be in a world where only "Strange New Worlds" and "Lower Decks" remain standing. It's fitting that at least one of those remain intertwined with the original series, letting the franchise come full circle.

Star Trek: Voyager's Tim Russ Hilariously Explains Star Wars

  • Actor Tim Russ humorously explains Star Wars in a video, highlighting the playful rivalry between Star Trek and Star Wars.
  • J.J. Abrams has directed two movies in both the Star Trek and Star Wars franchises, exemplifying the links between the two.
  • Gene Roddenberry and George Lucas shared a mutual admiration, showing the positive impact of the friendly rivalry between the two sci-fi franchises.

An old clip of Star Trek: Voyager 's Tim Russ hilariously explaining Star Wars to the uninitiated has resurfaced on social media. Star Trek and Star Wars have always had a friendly rivalry, riffed upon by comedians for decades. The comically exaggerated rivalry is likely rooted in Star Wars and Star Trek being the biggest science fiction franchises. However, there's an affectionate back and forth between both franchises, exemplified by the many connections between them.

The most obvious connection between Star Trek and Star Wars is director J.J. Abrams , who has directed two movies apiece in each franchise. However, there are also multiple actors who have appeared in both Star Trek and Star Wars . Another connection between both franchises is the influence of the 1950s Flash Gordon serials on both Star Wars and the Captain Proton alter-ego of Star Trek: Voyager 's Lt. Tom Paris (Robert Duncan McNeill), which perhaps makes Tim Russ uniquely qualified to hilariously explain the plot of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope .

Star Trek Has A Tatooine Planet: 10 Star Wars References

Star wars: a new hope hilariously explained by star trek: voyager's tim russ.

To celebrate Star Wars Day on May 4th, 2015, the legendary comedy improv group Upright Citizen's Brigade released a video entitled "Star Trek's Tim Russ Explains Star Wars Day" as part of their Pocketwatch strand. Tim Russ' hilarious summary of the plot of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope was written by Aaron Burdette , and was recently shared by the Omega Particle Podcast , bringing it to the attention of a new audience. Watch Tim Russ' explanation of " Dark Vader ", his " Death Ball ", and the mysterious powers of " the Fourth " below:

Tim Russ' work with the Upright Citizens' Brigade on the hilarious Star Wars explainer video demonstrates comic chops that he was rarely able to display as Star Trek: Voyager 's Tuvok . Tim Russ' deadpan delivery of Aaron Burdette's script adds an extra dimension to his hilariously inaccurate description of the plot of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope , especially his naming of R2D2 as " Pill " . It's another riff on the Star Trek / Star Wars rivalry, but this collaboration between Tim Russ and the Upright Citizens' Brigade is the most sophisticated example of the form .

Notable Upright Citizen's Brigade alumni include Star Trek: Prodigy 's Jason Mantzoukas and Star Trek: Lower Decks ' Paul Scheer.

Star Trek Has A Friendly Rivalry With Star Wars

For decades, the friendly rivalry between Star Wars and Star Trek has been riffed upon by stand-up comics, and even the stars themselves. In 2015, William Shatner appeared on stage at the Country Music Awards, dressed as a Stormtrooper for a comedy skit . Shatner's best Star Wars comedy routine, however, was at the American Film Institute's Lifetime Achievement celebration for George Lucas. William Shatner appeared on stage to the surprise of the assembled Star Wars alumni, riffing on the friendly rivalry between the two franchises. William Shatner even sang a Star Wars -themed version of Frank Sinatra's "My Way" to a delighted George Lucas.

In an interview for the 2011 documentary, Trek Nation , George Lucas revealed he was a big Star Trek fan, and even attended conventions when he was younger . In return, Gene Roddenberry attended an event celebrating 10 years of Star Wars , and shook hands with Lucas, the historic moment captured on camera. The mutual admiration between Star Wars and Star Trek continues to inspire and improve both franchises to this day. But as Star Trek: Voyager 's Tim Russ proves, that's no reason not to poke fun at the rivalry every now and then.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Review – Episodes 1-4

In the future when all’s well….

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Review – Episodes 1-4 - IGN Image

Since its debut in 2017, Star Trek: Discovery has undergone many more onscreen changes than the average Trek show, featuring a different captain in each of its first four seasons, transporting its crew 900 years into the future for a full reset after Season 2, basically destroying the United Federation of Planets (don’t worry, it got better), and perhaps most notably, introducing its main character, Michael Burnham, at one of the lowest points possible for a Starfleet character – as a hated mutineer in Season 1 – only to eventually have her become the inspiring captain of the USS Discovery.

Indeed, as Discovery enters its fifth and final season, that is where we find Burnham, played by the always great Sonequa Martin-Green: She’s in charge of the Disco, has saved the galaxy a couple of times over, and is a pretty different person than she was when we first met her. Some might even say, with apologies to Will Riker, that she’s more seasoned now … But if the thrust of Burnham’s arc has always been to push out of the box she had placed herself in in the pilot – even last season, when she was captain, she was continuously at odds with the president of the Federation! – how can showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Michelle Paradise keep things interesting now that the character, essentially, has it all?

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Images

Paramount Plus

For one thing, after the events of the Season 4 finale, she doesn’t really have it all anymore. Her partner, Cleveland “Book” Booker (David Ajala) – one of the best things about the show since the time-jump at the start of Season 3 – has been disgraced after falling in with the wrong crowd last season (long story). He’s doing his penance, working for Starfleet now – “I go where the Federation tells me,” he says – but Burnham and Book’s romantic relationship has seemingly come to an end… even as he rejoins the ship to help in the search for this season’s McGuffin (more on that in a bit).

Interestingly, Book’s fall from grace parallels Burnham’s own from back in Season 1, but the damage last season’s incident did to their connection isn’t the only personal challenge facing the captain now. Whereas she has so often punched up in the past – at her captains, her superiors, even, as noted, the president – at the start of Season 5 Michael is introduced to a new frenemy who she must contend with: Captain Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie). As a Starfleet skipper who came into his own during the rough and tumble years after The Burn, Rayner takes a more raw approach to his missions, as in their first meeting when he’s willing to put his ship and crew at risk while attempting to capture some baddies.

What's the best Star Trek series of the past 10 years?

Without delving into spoilers, I will note that in the first four episodes of the season that Paramount+ has provided for review, Burnham and Rayner’s relationship goes in a different direction than I was expecting, and it’s a refreshing one that seems to affirm that Michael really has grown as a character over the course of her time on Discovery. Things reach a peak in Episode 4 (again, the last one I’ve seen at the time of this writing), as the pair find themselves on something of a standalone adventure that is fun, intriguing, and the perfect forum for a connection to begin between the two characters. Rennie, forever immortalized as Leoben on Battlestar Galactica , harnesses his edgy persona to great effect as a new regular castmember.

But about those baddies: They’re the human Moll (Eve Harlow) and alien L'ak (Elias Toufexis), a pair of couriers not unlike the pair of couriers that Burnham and Book once were (when Michael was separated from her ship between Seasons 2 and 3). Moll and L’ak are looking for an ancient piece of technology which, no joke, can be connected to an episode of 1990s Trek in the most tenuous of ways. An overreliance on treasure hunt-style stories has been a weakness of Discovery since Season 2, taking entire seasons to resolve as the characters go from clue to clue week by week. Unfortunately, it looks like Season 5 is continuing in that vein. But Harlow and Toufexis bring a certain likability to their characters that is intriguing, and as noted above, the show seems to be figuring out how to do breakout episodes if the fourth hour is any indication.

As always, the production design and visual effects on Discovery are outstanding and feature-quality, even if some of the events being depicted occasionally stretch credulity even by sci-fi standards. Burnham riding the outside of a starship while at warp speed is a tough one for an old nerd like me to take, but there’s no denying that it looks as realistic as Burnham riding the outside of a starship at warp speed could look!

Meanwhile, the rest of the core cast are mostly given compelling things to do in these first four: Saru (Doug Jones) continues his relationship with the Vulcan T'Rina (Tara Rosling); Tilly (Mary Wiseman) returns after taking part of last season off, and she’s back to her humorous Tilly ways after encountering some Andorian champagne in Episode 1; and Wilson Cruz gets to put a unique spin on Dr. Culber in Episode 3 (sorry, no spoilers!). Stamets (Anthony Rapp), meanwhile, is confronted with the shuttering of his entire livelihood – the spore drive program – after the events of last season, though the scripts haven’t quite given the actor a chance to fully dig in on that prospect yet.

Questions and Notes from the Q Continuum:

  • I still don’t understand why David Cronenberg is a recurring player on Star Trek. I just wish he showed up more often.
  • I had almost forgotten how fast Saru can run!
  • Yes, Tig Notaro’s Jett Reno pops back in to crack wise here or there.
  • Hey, the Saurian Linus is very present on the bridge this season – with dialogue and everything! Get ready to hear about his people’s mating habits.
  • The big question about Star Trek: Discovery’s final season, of course, is… how final will it be? We know Paramount+ has a Starfleet Academy series in the works. Will that be set in the 32nd century as well, as Tilly is already an instructor there? And who’s to say that Captain Burnham or the others can’t show up again in some future Trek?

Star Trek: Discovery starts its fifth and final season in fine fashion, setting up another season-long mystery but doing so with enough interesting character developments to avoid the pitfalls of that approach that have sometimes plagued the show in the past. Sonequa Martin-Green is as strong as ever as Captain Burnham, and these first four episodes deal directly with the evolution of her character over the years, an evolution that at one point might’ve been seen as a bug of inconsistent writing but is now framed as a feature of the character. Callum Keith Rennie’s Captain Rayner makes for an intriguing addition to the cast, and the show looks as amazing as it ever has. Through four episodes, the last voyage of the USS Discovery is on course to stick the landing.
