Top airline flying from orlando to cleveland.

They lost my baggage on my connection flight, it’s been 24 hours since I put my claim in and still no update on my bags.

The flight was canceled, then delayed twice, we were moved gates twice. Short staff at the counter and check in. We waited for our flight 9 hours. Will never use Frontier ever again, or Spirit.

Good - Leg spar, cleanliness, and on time performance. Bad - No snacks and entertainment.

The plane was on time. Boarding went fast. Smooth flight and landing. I filled out info for a frontier credit card on the flight from Indy to Orlando and have have heard nothing back. I was supposed to get all these “instant” rewards and have received nothing g.

The only thing that may be concerning to others is the multiple notifications of a delayed flight. Then, with less than an hour before boarding, the flight was on time. The gate changed several times, leading to confusion.

The flights were right on time. The issue that was the most difficult was the lack of legroom on the planes

There was only room for a quarter of the passengers to sit at the gate at MCO. The gate attendant allowed people who did not require assistance to board early before they realized and started to turn people back. The flight was extremely uncomfortable due to pressure. My ears, eyes, sinuses and joints were very painful the whole flight. My sister also complained about her ears and sinuses as well as joints and while deplaning I heard several other passengers complain about the same issues. I’ve never felt that much discomfort flying before and I’ve been doing it for over 40 years.

Got to where I needed to be safely. Thank you!

Delayed over 2 hours on the way there, and back, no free drinks, no free water, no Wifi, bathroom dirty!

Even though my personal item fit into the testing compartment they had, the agent charged me for the bag and threatened to not let me board if I didn’t pay. He was doing this with everyone that was boarding, everyone was so pises. Never flying Frontier again

Lower fares, fewer flights: How the closure of United’s hub in Cleveland has altered air travel over 10 years

C LEVELAND, Ohio – Ten years ago this month, United Airlines shocked the city with this announcement: The carrier was closing its long-time hub at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, slashing flights and destinations.

The immediate aftermath was despair. For decades, Cleveland travelers had enjoyed the benefits of hub status, which provided an outsized number of daily flights and destinations, a boon, especially, to the business community.

But fast forward 10 years, and the result of the closure hasn’t been entirely negative.

Fares at Cleveland Hopkins, once among the highest in the nation, have come down dramatically in the past 10 years.

And the number of travelers using the airport currently exceeds the number of passengers during the late hub years.

Despite some positive benefits, many business travelers remain deeply dissatisfied with the options at Hopkins. With fewer nonstop flights and more time-consuming connections, business trips that could previously be done in a day now take two or three.

“Closing the hub was very sad and makes living in Northeast Ohio difficult when you travel for work,” said frequent flier Richard Catalano. “I miss the days of nonstops to many parts of the country. Today’s reality is more connections, more hassle, more potential delays.”

Catalano, an auto industry consultant, does concede one benefit of the hub’s closure: “I guess what’s better is flying to Florida for $19.”

But he adds, “I’d cheerfully give that up for the hub.”

Net benefit or net loss? It probably depends on what’s most important to you as a traveler.

Here are numerous ways the hub closure in 2014 has changed air travel to and from Northeast Ohio:

Number of nonstop destinations

In 2013, the year before the hub closed, United operated nonstop flights to 68 cities from Cleveland; today, that number is 14.

Interestingly, some of the routes that United cut from CLE in 2014 are back on the carrier’s roster – including popular leisure routes to Tampa, Fort Myers and Fort Lauderdale, Florida, plus Phoenix and Las Vegas.

Some notable destinations are still missing, however, including flights to Kansas City, Montreal, Portland, Oregon and Richmond, Virginia.

“The beauty of a hub is that it brings demand in from other places,” said Brett Snyder, who follows the airline industry at crankyflier.com . “There are more destinations and more flights than a city could support on its own.”

Overall in Cleveland, the airport offers nonstop flights to 40 nonstop markets in 2024. That compares to 73 in early 2014.

New airlines

United Airlines was by far the most dominant carrier in Cleveland a decade ago, accounting for about 67% of passengers who flew in or out of Hopkins.

Today, the carrier is still the largest airline at Cleveland, serving 2.4 million passengers in 2023, or about 25% of the total.

The cutbacks by United allowed numerous new airlines to enter the market, including Spirit, JetBlue and Alaska, which are all flying to destinations from Cleveland that United previously served.

The expansion of low-cost carrier Frontier Airlines, which had a very small presence in Cleveland before the hub closure, has been the most dramatic.

In 2023, Frontier served 1.7 million passengers at Cleveland Hopkins – the third largest carrier in Cleveland, behind United and American.

Frontier currently flies to 20 destinations from Cleveland – more than any other carrier. The airline has picked up several destinations previously served by United, including San Juan, Puerto Rico, and San Diego, as well as some destinations new to Clevelanders, including Montego Bay, Jamaica, a route that starts next month.

Frontier announced in November that it was establishing a crew base in Cleveland , with more than 400 new jobs, including pilots, flight attendants and aircraft maintenance workers. The crew base, which opens in March, should mean more nonstop flights, as well.

United, despite the hub closure, still maintains a crew base in Cleveland, with hundreds of flight attendants and pilots based in Northeast Ohio.

And despite cutbacks, Cleveland remains one of United’s largest non-hub airports, in terms of both passenger numbers and flights.

Cost of flying

These new airlines – particularly the low-cost carriers including Frontier and Spirit – have dramatically driven down airfares in Cleveland.

In 2013, CLE fares were among the highest in the nation. In the third quarter of 2013, for example, only four large-city airports had fares higher than Cleveland – Cincinnati, Newark, Washington Dulles and Houston Bush.

In the third quarter of 2023, fares at Hopkins averaged $335.47, according to U.S. Department of Transportation — well under the national average of $368. Only 13 large-city airports were cheaper (among them – Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, Las Vegas and New Orleans).

Fares to leisure destinations, in particular, can be quite inexpensive. A quick check of flights to Orlando from Cleveland in early March found fares under $125 roundtrip on three different airlines.

But don’t forget: Many of these carriers charge extra for carry-on bags and advanced seat assignments, so the cheap fares aren’t the whole story.

Passenger numbers

The number of passengers at Cleveland Hopkins dropped dramatically as a result of the hub closure, but the airport didn’t take long to recover.

By 2017, the number of travelers at Hopkins exceeded 2013 numbers. In 2023, the airport welcomed 9.9 million passengers, the second most since 2008 and well above the 9.1 million passengers who traveled through Hopkins in the last year of the United hub.

But the mix of passengers today is very different.

In 2013, one-third of all passengers at CLE were connecting – merely passing through the airport en route from Grand Rapids to Fort Myers, for example, or Milwaukee to Richmond.

Today, almost all the passengers are travelers who start or end their trips in Cleveland.

In addition, Cleveland Hopkins has lured many Northeast Ohio travelers who used to drive to the Akron-Canton Airport for lower fares.

In the 10 years since the closing of the hub, the number of travelers using the Akron-Canton Airport has dropped dramatically – from 1.7 million in 2013 to 687,000 in 2023. Many of those travelers now fly from Cleveland Hopkins instead.

Where passengers come from makes a big difference in terms of airport services.

Passengers who live in Northeast Ohio need amenities including more parking, security screening and ticket counters. Connecting passengers don’t need any of those things.

The change in passenger mix is one reason why the city is planning a major rebuilding of the aging terminal – with more space for security, customs, baggage drop-off and other features.

Construction on the $3 billion project is expected to break ground in late 2025 or early 2026.

Cleveland Hopkins airport welcomed 9.9 million passengers in 2023, just shy of pre-pandemic volume

Number of flights

The total number of flights at Hopkins has declined dramatically in the past 10 years – but that’s not entirely a function of the United cutbacks.

In 2013, there were an average of 227 daily departures, according to Hopkins figures. In 2023, the number of daily departures is about 121. And remember — that’s despite the fact there are more passengers today than a decade ago.

Fewer flights mean travelers have fewer choices when it comes to departure times.

Business travelers, in particular, like added frequency on a route – so if they miss a flight because a meeting runs long, they can catch another flight an hour or two later.

In the years since the hub closure, all airlines – including United – have reduced their use of small, regional airplanes for economic reasons.

So instead of flying an average of 14 daily flights to Chicago, for example, on 50-seat regional planes, United now flies five or daily flights to O’Hare on much bigger jets.

Other effects: Concourse D and fees

Cleveland Hopkins’ newest addition, Concourse D, was built in 1999 for Continental Airlines, which merged with United in 2010.

The structure, connected via an underground tunnel to the airport’s main terminal, has 16 gates and was built to serve smaller, regional jets. It was mothballed in 2014 and has been empty and unused since then.

United continues to pay down debt on the building, which is scheduled to be paid off in 2027.

There are no plans to use Concourse D in the new terminal construction project. Officials have said the building is obsolete and would be too expensive to reconfigure for larger planes. It is slated to be torn down in the coming years.

Meanwhile, the fees that the airport charges airlines to use its space have come down dramatically in the past decade.

All airports charge the airlines to use their facilities. Those charges include landing fees, which are based on weight, rent for ticketing space, gate areas and other factors.

Fees are sometimes reported as a single cost per enplaned passenger, or CPE. It’s the total amount of fees charged to an airline divided by the total number of passengers served. It’s not the same for every airline, although it’s reported to the federal government by the airport as an average.

In 2013, the CPE at Hopkins was $14.21, which spiked to $21.25 in 2014 as the number of passengers dropped. In 2022, the most recent year available, the cost per enplanement was $8.76, according to a federal database.

Airport officials are currently in the process of negotiating with the airlines on a new fee structure that will pay for much of the new terminal project.

And just to bring things full circle – that new terminal is needed, in large part, because of the many changes that have occurred at Cleveland Hopkins and in air travel since United closed its hub 10 years ago.

What to Know

The Cavaliers are 8-2 against the Magic since November of 2021, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Thursday. The Cleveland Cavaliers will take on the Orlando Magic at 7:00 p.m. ET at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse after having had a few days off. Both teams come into the game bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

The Cavaliers posted their closest victory since January 7th last Wednesday. They came out on top in a nail-biter against Chicago and snuck past 108-105. The victory was all the more spectacular given the Cavaliers were down 17 points with 6:14 left in the second quarter.

It was another big night for Donovan Mitchell, who scored 30 points along with seven assists and six rebounds.

Meanwhile, winning is just a little bit easier when you work as a team to post ten more assists than your opponent, a fact the Magic proved last Wednesday. They strolled past New York with points to spare, taking the game 118-100. The victory came about thanks to a strong surge starting at the 11:34 mark of the second quarter, when the Magic were facing a 39-27 deficit.

The Magic's success was spearheaded by the efforts of Franz Wagner, who scored 21 points along with six assists and three steals, and Paolo Banchero, who went 6 for 10 from beyond the arc en route to 36 points and 5 assists. Banchero is trending in the right direction, as he's improved his point production for three games straight.

Cleveland is on a roll lately: they've won ten of their last 11 games, which provided a nice bump to their 36-17 record this season. As for Orlando, their victory bumped their record up to 30-25.

This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: The Cavaliers haven't given up the ball easily this season, having only averaged 12.7 turnovers per game. However, it's not like the Magic struggle in that department as they've been averaging only 13.8 turnovers per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.

Looking ahead, the Cavaliers are the favorite in this one, as the experts expect to see them win by 6.5 points. This contest will be their tenth straight as the favorites (so far over this stretch they are 4-5 against the spread).

Cleveland is a solid 6.5-point favorite against Orlando, according to the latest NBA odds .

The oddsmakers had a good feel for the line for this one, as the game opened with the Cavaliers as a 7.5-point favorite.

The over/under is 216 points.

Head coach and creator of the Badass Lady Gang, Kelly Roberts’ pre-BALG fitness routine consisted mostly of struggling through the elliptical and trying to shrink her body. It wasn’t until hitting post-college life, poised with a theatre degree, student loans, and the onset of panic, that she found running. Running forced Kelly to ditch perfectionism and stomp out fear of failure. Viral selfies from the NYC half marathon struck a chord with women who could relate to the struggle, and soon the global women’s running community Badass Lady Gang was born. BALG is about enjoying life with a side of running. Kelly’s philosophy measures success by confidence gained, not pounds lost. If you aren’t having fun, it’s time to pivot. Kelly is an RRCA certified coach and has completed Dr. Stacy Sims ‘Women Are Not Small Men’ certification course helping coaches better serve their female athletes. Boarding super slow with people allowed to linger in aisles

There were choices for the snacks. Good choices and tasty lunch and breakfast as well.

First time travel in economy and the worst experience I ever had ! Shame on paying 600 dollars to be in a tuna can ! Service was terrible no even water no even class no even matters your flight attendants were lazy and sloppy very bad experience! After all these years traveling in first and once I try this cause I need to go to a destination for an emergency wow shame on you !

Everything was smooth and easy to fly. No complains and a lot of thanks!

More space in the cabin. The guy in front of me leaned his seat back and I felt he was sitting in my lap.

We checked one bag. That was fast and the agent was fast and super nice. At the gate, boarding was fast and efficient. Flight was uneventful which was great because it was early in the morning and most folks were sleeping. Landing was great. Delta does a really good job of making the flying experience better all around considering you are sitting in such a small space on a plane for several hours. Flight from ALT to Panama City was short and uneventful as well. No entertainment but no need since it was such a short flight.

The announcements about boarding were unclear and har.d to understand I almost missed the flight even though I wa in the boarding area. .

Delta and partner KLM continue to deliver and excellent flying experience with professional crew members and in flight food and entertainment

Pricing of seats is difficult - price transparency has disappeared. First class, business class. Comfort plus, economy, basic…. Especially the pricing of seat reservation. Used to be but early get a better price; now it seems prices are falling as we get closer to departure. Miles ticket value has gone away. Give me a break. Everybody is playing the game of upselling and delivering lower service. When demand drops, so will the game of price gouging, but we’ll see.

The Delta flight was delayed for maintenance issue. The crew is also delayed and I’ve been there at the same time as I was so it was really outside the hands of crew directly. However, where Delta failed was there was about eight other ways for me to get to my final destination and they did not offer changes beyond the initial one. The flight was delayed five hours when they had to change my connecting flight they had to downgrade my premium class for so far zero compensation and I’m still waiting on the results of a formal complaint. All in all this was the worst experience I’ve had with Delta in quite some time. Carrying the review for my first light over to this one, I was downgraded a class and because of my status I’ve only flown comfort plus or higher in some years I was unaware of things like drink vouchers, or anything like that, as far as I knew drinks were complimentary. The attendant was unnecessarily nasty towards me when I was just asking her to explain how it works and I showed her my first class ticket even though I was in the back of the plane and she was still equally unhelpful and frustrated. I’m not saying that the first class ticket should allow better treatment. I’m saying that I was showing that normally I would’ve had it for free beverage and so I didn’t know what she was talking about, she didn’t need to be so frustrated. Outside of that if the flight was 2 1/2 hours and the snack and beverage options did not become available until the final 30 minutes of the flight when we were on the descent, so any snacks and drinks were quickly rushed away. I do not know if this is common for what main cabin normally experiences but I hope it isn’t because that level of customer service and tending to the needs of the passengers is below what I would call essential.

Good. The wife was not working but then it got resolved.

Good boarding. Crew started quick with drinks and food. They came around several times for trash which I really liked. Other than turbulence due to storms in the area, flight was great.

Seats are way too snug for my hip to knee ratio and the recline on the seat in front of me made my experience worst. My legs had no room at all. Not a plane for people 6 ft or over unless you fly first class.

Poor. 3 hours on the tarmac waiting for maintenance. We’re told numerous times it will be 10 minutes. Once going tv was blurry. Seat cramped. Not good at all. Missed an important meeting as a result.

The crew was not friendly . Service was poor. Food was not great. It was also an older plane that ha some equipment issue.

Flight was not comfortable and crew was rude and not wanted to help, i would never choose united if there is alternate options . not cooperative with baby

Wasn’t very crowded. Seamless processes. No issues traveling with two little kids.

Staff were engaging but more concerned about their interaction with each other than with the passengers. Aircraft was very old and this was highly evident in the disrepair of the seats (pictures were taken). Video screens were small and difficult to use.

Seat comfort is still an issue. Seats way too hard or lacking lumbar support. Entertainment system has lots of nice features like “Don’t wake me for meals”. The Bluetooth headphone pairing works well if you know how to make your pods available for pairing. While this trip I didn’t find any of the many many movies that interesting, there is plenty in there for all tastes. Crew were excellent. Captain was good about telling us how limg seat belt sign would be on while going around a storm system. Wi-Fi was quite good for only $8 bucks for mileage plus members. Be sure to load a credit card into your United app to pay for food or drinks.

Everything went smoothly and even though flights were being canceled all over mine took off and I was home for Christmas! We had a slight delay but crew made it out quickly. Seats are slightly uncomfortable but it’s what ya get Overall great flight

Overall okay. Ipgrades ate worthless anymore. Wish I’d not been so loyal To them for so many years. Platinum many years. Gold for life. Usually 20th-30th on upgrade list.

Flight attendants used to be nice to people. And any flight over 5 hours should have some kind of food other than tiny pretzels and one drink comped.

The male steward shoved me hard when i sleeping on the isle, woke me up the only way incan descripe it was Violently. I wanted to cause a scene but was able to putnmy anger innch check, i want complain to AA

All the British airways staff were very helpful and friendly. Every thing was very smooth running from checking in boarding and arriving 40 minutes early. Which is a brilliant start to your holiday.

Good over all but my flight from. Miami to Barbados the airplane was very dirty like I have never seen before. It looked like that plane hasn’t been cleaned in a long time and I fly about one time a month.

Overall a fiasco. My first flight was delayed so late that I would have missed my connection. I had to cancel the flight and reschedule for the next morning. I took over half an hour to retrieve my luggage. I already paid $30 for checked in luggage for the flight I didn't take. When I checked in for my new flight on app I paid another $30. I went to the kiosk for my luggage tags and was charged $40. (My baggage didn't make it on the connecting flight but was delivered at 10:00 that night.) Later that day I requested a refund of the baggage fees. I received an email stating my refund was complete in the amount of $234.62. I didn't realize that meant my return flight was canceled until I tried to check in at the counter. They had refunded the wrong thing. It costed me $381.10 to book a new flight home. At least my baggage made it home with me.

First of all , lucky I caught our flight changes and we actually flew into chicago then Fort Myers

Everything was very good EXCEPT the food, on a five and a half hour trip. They only gave to us was snacks in first class. They didn't give us pillows or blankets.

Considering the weather issues. It was great. Over all the 13 flights changes

Flight was delayed due to crew not being there, besides that it was a normal flight.

It would have been no e to have the option of a mid day flight and not super early or super late in the day.

Never made it to Atlanta due to the horrible policy of having to be at the gate 1 hour prior to departure. I was at the airport and the plane had not left Baltimore, but was not allowed to board.

Never got on the plane! My 2pm flight became 4am so I had to book southwest!

Well those seats! Man! On a short flight tolerable but too stiff and lack of cushioning make a longer flight uncomfortable. Good leg room tho, but I’m only 5’3”….

There was no WiFi available and trying to check baggage with the automated system never works with my Florida IDENTIFICATION

Passengers play their phones so everyone can hear them. No one tells them to use earbuds. Very annoying and unenjoyable.

First flight delayed and spirit didn’t let me on my connecting flight even though I made it on time because they overbooked and gave away my seat.

flights were both good to and from. in flight seats were uncomfortable but ok for a short flight. flight attendants were very nice.

Flight was all good. Full plane and difficult to hear announcements.

The price was good, but the seats was too little too cramped. You guys nickel and dime the person who’s flying all food even water that’s ridiculous. I’ll be flying with somebody else unless this changes.

Everything was on time and smoothly run. All employees appeared happy and enjoying their job. The delay in take-off was unrelated to anything in Frontier’s control. I wish there were a caffeine-fee, sugar free soda drink option besides water. There are multiple zero sugar caffeine free options.

Everything was on time and smoothly run. All employees appeared happy and enjoying their job. The delay in take-off was unrelated to anything in Frontier’s control.

I like that the flight was not overcrowded, and I felt had space to spread out a little more. The flight was smooth for the most part no major turbulence. The crew was pretty good accommodating and professional.. the fellow passengers were cool as well… all good! Snacks always makes things better, but of course there were no snacks.

Be prepared for crowds and chaos upon arrival at the Orlando airport

Frontier is a mess. Kept changing flights and times on me. Ridiculous. Charged us twice for annual Discout Den membership.

Frontier system that tracts what you’ve paid for is horrible. I brought bags, tried to upgrade the weight of bag. Did it via the text service on their site. Got to the airport and they had no idea what was going on. Ended up paying way more than I was supposed to

5 MINTUES LATE TO THEIR CHECK IN AND THEY WACK ME 200.00 BUCKS FOR RE BOOKING FEE AND PUT ME ON ANOTHER FLIGHT. @ THE BOARDING GATE IWATCH THEM BOARD MY ORIGINAL FLIGHT RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME- TOATL SCAM!

Flight was canceled both ways cost me a lot of time and money. Company takes advantage of people to make money, can’t call there is no phone number and in order to chat with an agent you have to know the secret way to get to a person rather than a robot. Never deal with them again.

My luggage didn’t arrive with me and the personnel to help is nonexistent till like an hour before and after one of their flights .
