Useful information for planning your vacation in France

The official language of France is French. English is widely spoken in hotels and popular visitor destinations.

The currency of France is the euro (€). You can buy euro before you travel or use an ATM to withdraw cash on arrival. All cities and larger towns have ATMs, and hotels, restaurants, and larger shops all accept credit cards.

France is renowned for its food, and while here you can enjoy rich cheeses, fine wines, delicate macarons, and fresh bread. From creamy Camembert and rich Roquefort, to sparkling Champagne and bold merlot, France is an epicurean delight.

Normandy is known for its shellfish and Calvados (apple brandy). Brittany is renowned for its crêpes, while to the south, the food is distinctly Mediterranean with lots of garlic, olives, and fresh vegetables used in signature Provençal dishes such as bouillabaisse (fish soup) and ratatouille (stewed vegetables).

Coffee is taken seriously in France and watching the world go by as you linger over a coffee is a national pastime. Wine varies widely from region to region and a visit to a local vineyard reveals the generations of care and refinement that has gone into local vintages.

By law, restaurants and bars are required to include a 15% service charge on all bills, so tipping is not necessary. For exceptional service, you can leave a small extra tip of about 5-10%. Taxi drivers and porters don’t expect a tip but will appreciate the gesture. It’s customary to tip tour guides and private drivers but this is at your discretion. Your specialist can advise on appropriate amounts closer to your trip.

It takes around seven and a half hours to fly from the East Coast of the US to France, and around 11 hours from the West Coast.

The time zone in France is UTC+1 hour. Daylight Savings Time is observed from late-March to late-October.

The best way to get around in France is on the country’s efficient network of high-speed trains, known as the TGVs. If you’re short on time, it may also be worth considering internal flights.

US citizens don’t need a visa for stays of less than 90 days in France or across the wider Schengen area.

Speak to your doctor for immunization advice for France and ensure you’re up to date with routine vaccinations at home. You can also check the recommended vaccinations by visiting the  Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website .

Your passport should be valid for a minimum of three months beyond your departure date from France or the Schengen area and have at least one blank page.

We worked with Zicasso's travel specialist for our trip to Alsace during the winter carnival. She provided us with so many things to enjoy, like the hotels and private, small-group excursions in Strasbourg and Colmar. She also provided vegan restaurant recommendations as my wife is vegan (although in Colmar, one had reverted to a tea-only service when we wanted dinner). The hotel in Strasbourg was excellent. The staff were great and the breakfast had lots of options that met our needs.All the guides were good. The tours of Obernai and Selestat, as well as Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle, were very interesting and informative. This was probably the highlight of our trip and is highly recommended. In Colmar, we were so overwhelmed and disappointed by the ridiculous overcrowding. All that we could see were people. In my opinion, the number of people needs to be restricted as at times, it was dangerous. Having been to Colmar many times, I was so disappointed as you could barely get around, and getting into any restaurant was almost impossible. Our guide gave us a walking tour of the town. Fortunately, he knew some quieter streets. The hotel was OK, but on the first night, we woke up to no power. The small group tour to the winery and local villages was OK, but still so very crowded. At the hotel at Mulhouse on our last day, we had a small suite, which was nice. Generally, we still enjoyed our trip.

She checked in on us during the trip and surprised us with complimentary champagne for our 30th anniversary! She made sure everything during our 14 days around London, Jersey (an English Channel Island), Normandy, and Paris was very smooth, with professional tours, private drivers, and seamless connection points. We couldn't have asked for better private and small-group guides, and I highly recommend them all. The guide in London was extremely knowledgeable, patient, and flexible while showing us around Soho and downtown. Another guide gave us background on past and present events for the tour of Windsor Castle. He was hilarious and an absolute treasure. Our other guide was a fantastic historian and showed us around Mont St. Michel on its 1,000th anniversary. Another guide took us on the most delicious Normandy cheese, cider, and Calvados tour, educating us on the processes. Our Giverny guide got us into Monet's Garden early, before the crowds, allowing for gorgeous pictures. Lastly, our St. Germain Secret Food tour guide took us to a Basque restaurant, where food and wine were so good you never want to leave.

Eric planned the perfect holiday in France. Our driver was waiting for us on arrival. Off to Normandy for our first three nights, with a quick stop at Monet's garden at Giverny. Our guide brought the water lilies to life. We checked in at an amazing five-star hotel. Do not miss either of their two Michelin-star restaurants. It's a short walk into Port-en-Bessin-Huppain, where you will find many restaurants. We spent two days exploring everything Normandy and World War 2 with an exceptional guide. Paris did not disappoint. We hit the ground running. Eric arranged a tour of Paris by car. The evening dinner cruise on the River Seine was definitely a highlight of the trip, as were beautiful views of the city lit up at night, including the Eiffel Tower. I had no idea how beautiful the Palace and Gardens of Versailles are - the restaurant on-site by the lake with rowboats is wonderful. Of course, the guide matters - she was the best! If you're a foodie, make sure you schedule a cooking class with our chef. Shopping at the local markets is an adventure in itself. I've been able to recreate the meal back in the States. We chose to explore the Champagne houses on this trip. Both were exceptional and yes, we brought home four bottles. In between houses, we had the most wonderful lunch with a champagne flight at Au 36 in Hautvillers. A trip to Paris would not be complete without visiting the Louvre and Orangerie museums. We completed our holiday with a flute of champagne at the top of the Eiffel Tower!  Eric and the guides made perfect restaurant recommendations. I most definitely recommend him and the travel agency!

Up until now, we had been working with the same hotels, guides and suppliers, but Covid really shook things up and suddenly we didn’t have the same contacts and in some cases no contacts at all!

A series of phone calls rectified the essentials, but each time we spoke to people, it seemed that they always had a new property, vineyard or experience to tell us about. My curiosity was piqued, so I hopped in my car and set off on a trip that was to take me from Bordeaux to the Medoc to Saint-Émilion, Cognac, La Rochelle and Île de Ré. This lesser known European beach has the bluest water in the world

When picking the perfect locale for a beach vacation, travelers often seek out the bluest waters to frolic in and relax.

It’s no wonder why. Research shows that being near, in or under water offers a slew of benefits for our well-being . Blue spaces have a calming effect, helping to lower stress and anxiety and provide a respite to the over-stimulated states of mind we often find ourselves in. 

To help travelers pick their perfect beach with stunning blue water, London-based travel agency CV Villas conducted a study in March to find the beaches with the bluest waters, according to scientific color theory. To do this, the team analyzed the RGB color codes of unfiltered Google map images of 200 popular beaches worldwide to see how close they compare to the YInMn Blue, an intensely vibrant blue shade discovered in 2016. 

While most people imagine the most azure waters to be somewhere tropical like Maldives or Bora Bora, the research revealed that some of the bluest waters can be found in Europe, especially around Greece. (Nevertheless, travelers to the tropics will still find the water just as beautiful and relaxing.) 

“Not only does our research highlight the stunning coastal destinations that Europe has to offer, but it also reinforces the allure of lesser-known gems like Pasqyra Beach in Albania,” said Ben Briggs, CV Villas’ head of marketing, in a statement. “We hope that our study gives recognition to the natural beauty that lesser-known destinations can offer to travellers who are seeking an unforgettable seaside experience – and getting the chance to say they have officially swam in the world’s bluest water.”

With vast sandy areas and dunes, the sprawling Los Lances Beach is aptly located on the Costa de la Luz, meaning the Coast of Light, in southern Spain. Situated along the Atlantic Ocean, the beach’s waters are a clear, deep blue. On a clear day, beachgoers can spot the silhouette of Morocco in the distance. 

9. Ombros Gialos, Greece

On the Greek island of Sambros, Ombros Gialos Beach is ideal for adventurers as the hidden cove is only reachable by a winding road or boat. Although mostly rocky and sometimes with rough conditions, the small beach has a dock for swimmers or snorkelers to launch themselves into the bright turquoise sea. 

8. Praia do Carvalho, Portugal

Surrounded by dramatic golden cliffs and a rock formation out at sea, this quiet beach is beloved for its clear turquoise waters. To access the beach, visitors need to walk through a man-made tunnel and stairs, where a tranquil sandy beach awaits on the other side. 

7. Foki Beach, Greece

Situated on the Ionian island of Cephalonia, Foki Beach is named after the monk seals who used to frequent the beach. Flanked by olive and pine trees, the pebble beach features clear blue waters for swimmers and snorkelers. Visitors can meander around the beach via nearby trails. 

6. Voulisma Beach, Greece

Also known as Golden Beach, this crescent-shaped beach is one of the most popular destinations in eastern Crete. With soft white sand and calm azure water, beachgoers enjoy spending the entire day there, stopping at nearby snack stands or renting umbrellas for respite from the sun. 

5. Kaputa Beach, Turkey

As one of the most popular beaches along the Mediterranean coast of Turkey, Kaputa Beach is known for its gold sand and crystal clear waters. Nestled between two cliffs, the beach is only accessible by descending a steep flight of stairs that have been carved into the cliffside. Visitors can rent sunbeds and umbrellas to enjoy the beach.

4. Plage de la Verne, France

In the South of France's Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region, Plage de la Verne is a charming pebble cove on the Saint-Mandrier-sur-Mer peninsula. Visitors can reach the beach via a coastal path. With just a little space for beachgoers to relax under the sun, the water is beautifully blue but not very swimmable. 

3. Kassiopi Beach, Greece

Corfu’s Kassiopi Beach is a stunning bay with a white pebble beach and water so clear that people can see the fish right below the surface. Guests can enjoy sunbathing, swimming, snorkeling, paddleboarding or jet skiing, or wandering along a charming waterfront promenade with cafes and tavernas. 

2. Paralia Mpouka, Greece

Located on the Ionian Sea, Paralia Mpouka is a spacious resort-laden beach with stunning water in various shades of bright blue. It’s also a popular beach destination, where guests frolic in the shallow water, kayak or paddleboard. Once the wind picks up in the afternoon, the favorite beach pastime activity is windsurfing. 

1. Pasqyra Beach, Albania

Landing the top spot for the bluest water is Pasqyra Beach, or Mirror Beach. The beach earned its name for its crystal clear water reflecting the sun like a mirror. The coastline is known to be breathtaking, surrounded by rock formations and mountains. Visitors to the beach take a dirt road and descend a rocky path. While the water is beautiful, it’s known to get pretty crowded as the day goes on.

Delta Air Lines, KLM and Air France host Agency Elite night

ATLANTA — Delta Air Lines, KLM and Air France joined forces to celebrate their top-tier agencies to an exclusive event held at the Delta Flight Museum at Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport in Atlanta.

Participants were greeted with a warm welcome from airline execs, followed by a guided tour of the museum, where they explored the rich history of aviation and Delta’s legacy, and where vintage aircraft, interactive exhibits, and artifacts showcased the evolution of air travel.

The award-winning agencies were recognized for their outstanding contributions, commitment and partnership.

The evening was capped with a special dinner under the wings of a restored B767.
