15 Sweet Facts About Step Brothers

By roger cormier | aug 1, 2015.

pablo cruise step brothers

Two years after Talladega Nights: The Legend of Ricky Bobby , Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly, and director Adam McKay teamed up again for Step Brothers . The family dysfunction that ensued when adult-children Brennan Huff and Dale Doback joined forces was entertaining enough to drum up more than $100 million at the box office. Here are some facts about the movie that you can toss out as a conversation starter at your next wine mixer.

1. ADAM MCKAY CAME UP WITH THE CONCEPT WHILE EDITING TALLADEGA NIGHTS .

Adam McKay, Will Ferrell, and John C. Reilly met one night during the editing of  Talladega Nights to come up with some ideas for their next project together. The next day, someone in the editing room said “bunk beds,” which gave McKay the idea to have the two actors play overgrown step brothers.

2. JON HAMM ALMOST PLAYED DEREK.

It came down to Hamm , Thomas Lennon, and Adam Scott for the part of the jerk brother Derek. Scott got the part.

3. IT WAS WILL FERRELL’S REAL SINGING VOICE AND REILLY’S REAL DRUMMING.

Reilly learned to play drums for his role in the movie Georgia , where the music was recorded live.

4. BUT IT WASN’T ADAM SCOTT'S REAL SINGING VOICE.

When Derek’s family is singing “Sweet Child O' Mine” in the car, everyone but Adam Scott was singing live. Scott was lip-synching to a singer who was standing in front of him outside the windshield.

5. JOHN C. REILLY HAS A LONG MUSICAL HISTORY.

Reilly's brother started a band called Shark Fighter , with John installed as the lead singer. His brother played the drums—and wouldn't allow John to touch his drum kit. Reilly admitted on NPR that he played with the kit anyway when his brother left the house.

6. RICHARD JENKINS USED TO WORK FOR REILLY’S FATHER.

Toward the end of filming, Jenkins—who played Reilly’s father, Dr. Robert Doback—heard from the actor playing his son that his father was also from the Chicago area and used to work in the linen business. It was then that Jenkins realized that he had worked for John Reilly (John's father) in the summer of 1969, and had met John Jr. when he was four years old.

7. BRENNAN’S TESTICLES WERE EXPENSIVE.

They cost $10,000 to produce . Ferrell kept them.

8. THE COSTUME DESIGNER HAD TO GET CREATIVE.

Susan Matheson had to manage to find old T-shirts that didn’t make it seem like Brennan and Dale were dressing as hipsters. She made Brennan’s pajama bottoms out of vintage Star Wars sheets purchased on eBay.

9. PABLO CRUISE PLAYED THE PREMIERE.

The 1970s pop-rock group were so pleased to see one of their T-shirts worn in the movie's trailer that they offered to perform at the film's premiere.

10. ADAM MCKAY RECYCLED AN OLD HIGH SCHOOL NAME FOR THE MOVIE.

Brennan performed at the Great Valley High School talent show. McKay graduated from Malvern, Pennsylvania’s Great Valley High in 1986.

11. NFL ANALYST CRIS COLLINSWORTH REFUSED TO CURSE.

He filmed a cameo playing Brennan’s boss for two lines. Whenever he was pitched a new line with a profanity in it from McKay, Collinsworth would change it so that he didn’t curse.

12. JENKINS NEEDED A TETANUS SHOT.

One of the dogs on set bit the actor in the butt , necessitating the shot. When Jenkins returned to work he asked McKay if he should be limping in the next scene for continuity purposes. McKay told him they probably weren’t going to use the dog scene anyway.

13. THE CATALINA WINE MIXER WASN’T SHOT ON CATALINA ISLAND.

It was shot at the Trump National Golf Course in Rancho Palos Verdes, California. The f*cking Rancho Palos Verdes Wine Mixer just doesn’t have the same ring.

14. THE FIRST VERSION OF THE MOVIE WAS FIVE HOURS LONG.

They managed to cut it down to 98 minutes for the theatrical release.

15. A RAP ALBUM WAS PLANNED AND SCRAPPED.

McKay started to work with the music producer responsible for “Boats ‘N Hoes” and hit songs by major artists like Rihanna and Katy Perry. The project was canceled after scheduling issues popped up with everybody involved.

Frank DiGiacomo: Pablo Cruise Is Back in Action

By Frank DiGiacomo

This image may contain Clothing Apparel Human Person TShirt and Face

Will Ferrell has proven that he can dominate the box office, but can he put a platinum-selling band from the 70s back on the music charts? In the trailer for Step Brothers , Ferrell's summer buddy movie with John C. Reilly, the comic actor appears in several scenes wearing a baseball shirt emblazoned with the palm-tree-punctuated logo of Pablo Cruise, a California band that ruled the airwaves in the mid- to late 1970s with such sunny Top 10 surf soul hits as "Love Will Find a Way" and "Whatcha Gonna Do?," then disappeared as pop music tastes changed in the 80s.

As it turns out, Pablo Cruise is back in action. After band members went their separate ways, in 1986, three of the four original members—Cory Lerios (keyboards and vocals), David Jenkins (guitar and vocals), and Steve Price (drums)—reformed in 2004 and have been playing the California casino circuit and other select venues ever since. It's just a hunch, but after seeing the trailer this past weekend, I suspect that, in the same way that airplay of Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" spiked after the famous final scene of The Sopranos , Ferrell's sartorial choice will reignite interest in Pablo Cruise by the time Step Brothers is released in late July. Lerios, who built a successful career scoring films and television after leaving the band in the 70s—among his many credits is the theme to Baywatch —says he first learned about the shirt when he got a call from one of the film's producers explaining that Ferrell had picked out the shirt while choosing his wardrobe for the movie. "They said he just really liked the shirt and they wanted to know if they could get permission for him to wear it," he says. (Because the band's logo is copyrighted, Ferrell couldn't wear the shirt without permission.) Lerios adds that as far as he knows, none of Pablo Cruise's music will be used in the movie (even though anyone familiar with both Ferrell's career and Pablo Cruise's music could easily imagine him singing "Whatcha Gonna Do?" a cappella while wearing nothing but an inappropriately tight Speedo.)

Then again, the shirt may be enough to significantly raise the band's visibility. Since the trailer debuted, Lerios says he's been getting e-mails from friends and fans who've seen Ferrell's fashion statement. Lerios's son even e-mailed him from England about it. "It's like a frickin' ad for the band," Lerios says of the trailer, and he plans to make the best of it. Although Pablo Cruise T-shirts are currently available on the band's website , they're a different style than the one that Ferrell wears in the trailer. But that's about to change.

An Interview With the Woman Behind the T-Shirts in ‘Step Brothers’

Susan Matheson Step Brothers

What’s the rarest t-shirt you own?

Right now I have a fantastic Ice Cube “Wanted by FBI” t-shirt that I can’t get enough of. I tried to use it in the film “Friday Night Lights” but Ice Cube wouldn’t give me permission, so instead it has become my favorite sleep shirt. The most valuable t-shirt I own was made by “World’s End”, Malcolm McLaren, and Vivienne Westwood ‘s label from the early 1980s. I dragged my mother to the World’s End store and bought one of the t-shirts from the Pirates collection in London in 1981 when I was a teenager. My older brother had bought “Never Mind The Bollocks Here’s The Sex Pistols” on the street in London in 1977 and even though I was a kid at the time, from that moment on the Punk Rock movement and Malcolm McLaren sparked my imagination. A couple of years ago I saw my beloved t-shirt on the market for about $1200.

Tell us about dressing actors for a film?

It is impossible for me to find enough originals of these shirts in their sizes to be able to use in the movie as I often need as many as 12 of them. I have photo doubles, stunt doubles, and the actor wearing the same item at the same time when we are shooting. This is why I have to manufacture enough multiples of the t-shirt in the correct sizes to be able to use them.

When I recreate a vintage t-shirt I have to copy it exactly, as otherwise, I will never get the legal clearances that I need to be able to use it in a film. For example, the Yoda t-shirt that John C. Reilly wears in Step Brothers. This was a terribly expensive shirt to copy, it required about 15 screens eventually to get the print right.

How do you get clearance to use a t-shirt in a film?

I still can’t believe that Lucas film gave legal approval to Sony studios for the use of the Yoda t-shirt as well as the pajama pants that I made for Will from old Star Wars sheets. I was absolutely sure that they would never ever say yes as the Star Wars films were produced by 20th Century Fox. I started off with about 30 different Star Wars t-shirts and then narrowed it down to my favorite, the Yoda t-shirt.

On Step Brothers , I submitted legal clearance forms for well over 100 t-shirts and in the end only got clearance on about 20. It’s always the t-shirts that you think are going to be a sure thing that don’t get approved.

I have received fascinating letters from bands who have refused my t-shirt requests. One of the best refusal letters was from the remaining members of Nirvana. They wrote a very heartfelt personal letter about why they didn’t want to let me use the Nirvana smiley t-shirt. On the other hand, there are bands like AC/DC who always, always approve requests for t-shirts and those are the very bands that I will never use in one of my films. If I see another film with a teenager wearing an AC/DC t-shirt I will have to gag. It’s become so cliche and it always tells me that people didn’t want to have to struggle to get something cool and different into the film. I always want to use something that people are surprised by and that they kind of have forgotten, but when they see it they have a warm and fuzzy feeling about it. I loved the Pablo Cruise t-shirt in Step Brothers for this very reason. Everyone who saw it paused for a moment and then said, wow, I remember them. I have since started up a correspondence with the lead singer of Pablo Cruise who was thrilled when his son saw it on Will.

What’s up with the Converse t-shirt John C. Reilly wore in Step Brothers?

How far will you go to get a shirt.

Anytime I leave town on a road trip I will stop and hunt at local thrift stores. Some of my best Americana t-shirts I have actually found in foreign countries like New Zealand, believe it or not. I have to admit that I am ruthless when it comes to vintage t-shirts. My friends will never let me forget the time that I paid an old lady for the t-shirt that she was wearing. I went into a store with her and bought her a new shirt in exchange. It’s not that I’m ruthless because I personally want to own every fantastic t-shirt in the world, it’s more like I want to spread the t-shirt gospel and show people what amazing stuff is still out there.

17 'Step Brothers' Facts That Somehow Make The Movie Even Better

Mustafa Gatollari - Author

Nov. 8 2018, Updated 3:41 p.m. ET

Step Brothers was took cinema into beautiful new territory when you saw Oscar Nominated actor John C. Reilly horrified at Will Ferrell t-bagging his drum set. I don't recall there ever being a major studio release where that happened and I have to say it's one of the most hilarious things I witnessed in a movie theater.

I mean the movie's filled with so many golden moments that are somehow made even better when you learn some little-known facts about this modern classic.

1. The inspiration behind the film came from bunk beds.

Bunk Beds scene from the movie 'Step Brothers'

While editing Talladega Nights , director Adam McKay was in the editing room when he heard someone mention "bunk beds". He got the idea for two grown men playing Step Brothers and the idea for the script was born.

2. Jon Hamm auditioned for the role of Derek.

Forget reposts here's Jon Hamm and a floof

Hamm, Thomas Lennon, and Adam Scott were up for the role originally.

3. Will Ferrell Really sang the song and John C. Reilly was really playing the drums.

Reilly had to play drums for the 1995 film Georgia , which recorded live music from its actors.

4. Adam Scott didn't "sing high like this" during filming, however.

5. John C. Reilly and his brother have a musical past.

View post on imgur.com

They had a band called Shark Fighter where John was the lead singer. John's brother was very particular about him touching his drum set. Reilly confessed in an NPR interview that when his brother was out of the house he would indeed play the drums.

6. Richard Jenkins once worked for Reilly's dad.

Jenkins realized at the end of the filming that Reilly's father used to work in the linen business in the Chicago area, turns out that Jenkins worked for Reilly's dad in the summer of 1969.

7. Brennan's prosthetic testicles cost $10,000.

Ferrell kept them after filming, too.

8. Costume designers had a hard time making sure Ferrell and Reilly didn't look like hipsters and not man-children.

Old t-shirts were carefully selected and Brennan's pajama pants were made out of old Star Wars bedsheets.

9. 1970's pop group Pablo Cruise played the movie's premiere after they saw one of their 1970's band t-shirts was worn in the trailer.

10. mckay gave a shout out to his old high school in the film..

The director graduated from Great Valley High in Malven, Pennsylvania in 1986. Brennan performed at the Great Valley Talent show where he was booed off-stage and told he had a mangina.

11. Cris Collinsworth just would not swear.

The NFL analyst was brought in to play Brennan's boss...but would always change the line director McKay would suggest to him if there was cursing in it.

12. Jenkins had to get a tetanus shot...for a scene that they weren't going to use.

The actor was bit by a dog in his butt during a scene. When Jenkins came to set the next day asking McKay if he wanted him to limp for continuity purposes, McKay said that he probably wasn't going to use the dog scene anyway.

13. The Catalina Wine Mixer was actually shot on the Trump National Golf Course in Rancho Palos Verdes.

Catalina sounds so much better though.

14. The original cut of the film was a whopping five hours long.

step brothers

The theatrical version was 98 minutes, however.

15. A Step Brothers rap album was almost produced.

Boats 'N Hoes

McKay was working with the music producer who came up with "Boats n Hoes" and was even going to involve Katy Perry and Rihanna. However, everyone who was supposed to be involved with the project had scheduling conflicts so it never came to fruition.

16. A Hugalo's Pizza sign can be seen during the bloopers of Step Brothers.

It's the same pizza place that Ricky Bobby briefly worked for during Talladega Nights .

17. The white dog s**t Brennan licks was actually powdered white donuts.

Probably not a scene you want to method act in.

The Legend of Pablo Cruise

Growing up in Caracus, Venezuala, Pablo Cruz never dreamed of getting to America, let alone becoming a rock and roll star. He sang as a child, and by his teens became pretty good strumming a guitar that belonged to his older brother Francisco. One sultry night in the summer of 1976, while performing with a merengue band in a tiny local joint named Calcaño’s Café,  destiny found him – along with Georgetown Records executive, Ignacio Irribarren, who was on vacation visiting his family in Caracus. “He stormed up to the stage after our show and roared ‘I’m taking you with me to Nashville and I’m changing your name!’” recalled Cruz. “He’d been chugging wine most of the night so I didn’t believe him at first. But somehow he convinced me that he was serious. Maybe it was his corduroy suit in August,” Pablo said with a laugh.

With his keen marketing instincts and an unorthodox knack for discovering new artists, Irribarren had earned the music industry nickname “Theta Man.” Putting those talents quickly to work, he issued outlandish press releases proclaiming the next Richie “La Bamba” Valens, hired Cruz a backing band of established session players and got him right into the studio, where the magic happened…almost immediately. “It took me a week or so to fully learn to write songs in English,” said Cruz, who amazingly had primarily known only what he’d picked up studying the character Mr. French on reruns of Family Affair until then. The work was recorded, mixed and ready to go in just three months. But Irribarren had one promise still to fulfill. “He said to me, ‘We’re not going to change the way your name sounds, just the spelling.’ I was skeptical, of course, and proud of my family heritage,” said Pablo. “But he was adamant, and boorish, and we’d already come this far.” And so was born the brief pop phenomenon of a man named Pablo Cruise.

The subsequent album Cruise Control was released in February of 1977, and the easy soul of its lead single, ‘Whatcha Gonna Do’ proved irresistible to light rock audiences burned out on disco and not ready for punk. As Pablo’s smash record rapidly climbed the charts, so too did his notoriety. Relocating to New York City, he quickly became a regular at famed Studio 54, hanging out with the Liza Minnelli and Diane Von Furstenberg crowd, seen canoodling with the likes of Deborah Harry and pre-Jagger Jerry Hall, and striking up a fast friendship with Andy Warhol, whose unforgettable portrait of Pablo Cruise would stand alongside the Campbell’s Soup Cans and Marilyn Monroe to become one of Warhol’s best-known works ever. One memorable night at Elaine’s, the notorious Upper East Side celebrity eatery, Pablo’s fame reached a particularly farcical level. Tom Cruise, fresh off his breakout success for Risky Business , approached him at his table and began insisting that they were related. “Dios mio, he’d obviously been doing a lot of coke,” giggled Pablo, “so I just let him believe it. Heck, maybe his name had been re-spelled, too!”

Sadly, like so many other overnight success stories, glory for Pablo was excruciatingly short-lived. Unable to recreate the mellow gold of ‘Whatcha Gonna Do’ and finding himself supplanted in the popular music scene by more cutting-edge acts like Dan Hill and Christopher Cross, Cruise’s prominence faded precipitously. In desperation, star-maker Irribarren attempted to re-brand Cruise as a leather-clad, heavy metal act, hastily producing the would-be comeback album Cruisin’ For A Bruisin’ . But audiences proved indifferent to Pablo’s new tough guy persona, and less than three short years after his splashy arrival from Caracus, Pablo Cruise faded into rock and roll oblivion.

Two later notable attempts via old Hollywood connections endeavoring to resuscitate Cruise’s utterly dormant career proved painfully fruitless. Will Farrell, a super-fan during Cruise’s brief pop supremacy and hoping to help him get placed on an oldies circuit, prominently wore a Pablo Cruise t-shirt in his moving fraternal relationship film Step Brothers . But still, no offers materialized. And in the final indignity, another bid to revive Pablo’s name and at least garner some possible wedding and bar mitzvah gigs was sabotaged when a perplexing typo in the script for underdog stoner comedy Napoleon Dynamite led to the secondary character being named Pedro rather than Pablo, thus rendering what became the popular plot line of “Vote For Pedro” entirely pointless.

“Whatcha gonna do when she says goodbye? / Whatcha gonna do when she is gone?” went the telling title line to Pablo Cruise’s masterwork, his one brilliant, indelible mark on the pop music world. Little did Pablo Cruise, nee Cruz, know that she – that fickle lady named fate – would pass him so soon. That she was merely, if you will, cruising by.

Um, just kidding. Pablo Cruise was a popular late ‘70’s smooth rock band – who actually did have the hit song ‘Whatcha Gonna Do’ – made up of four guys from San Francisco, none of whom was named Pablo Cruise. When the quartet were asked which one is Pablo they would commonly answer, “He’s the guy in the middle.”

And yeah, it’s not April Fool’s Day, but everyone suspects a little deceitful nonsense on April 1st, and not, say, December 5th.

Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly are comic powder kegs in this slap-happy, hilarious romp. They're a pair of goof-offs who become family when one's mother marries the other's father, and soon bad blood flows and sparks fly between the two contentious and competitive guys. Mary Steenburgen and Richard Jenkins portray the parents. Ferrell, who cowrote the script, and Reilly costarred in "Talledega Nights," which was directed by Adam McKay, who also directs this comedy.

Writer-director Adam McKay's third, proudly stupid comedy lacks sharp, satirical specificity of ANCHORMAN: THE LEGEND OF RON BURGUNDY (newscasters) and TALLEDEGA NIGHTS (NASCAR), but has something that manages to hold it all together: The inspired pairing of TALLEDEGA's Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly, two actors smart enough to play dumb and make it work. It's the story of a lovely lady named Nancy Huff (Mary Steenburgen), who was busy raising two boys on her own, of whom never really grew up. Obnoxious Derek (Adam Scott) became a successful private helicopter leasing agent, but his older brother, 39-year-old Brennan (Ferrell), couldn't even hold down at job at the local PetSmart and still lives with his widowed mom. Meanwhile, divorced Dr. Robert Doback (Richard Jenkins) is busy with Dale (Reilly), a 40-year-old college drop-out with a sense of entitlement who also never sufficiently matured enough to move out and get a life. One might think two guys like Brennan and Dale would have a lot in common, but when Nancy and Robert marry and decide to move into the Doback household, all hell breaks loose. Possessive towards his mother and angry about the upheaval in his coddled life, Brennan declares his hatred for Dale, insists up coldly calling his new step-father "Mr. Doback" and screws around with Dale's precious drum kit even after being told he must never, ever lay a finger on it. Dale, pissed about having to share his room with his new step-brother and his father with the woman he simply calls Nancy, Dale threatens Brennan's life. But they wind up bonding over a common enemy -- Derek, who's convinced Robert to sell his house and fulfill his dream of sailing around the world, even if means kicking Dale and Brennan out of the nest -- and when Dale punches Derek in the face, he and Brennan realize they're truly brothers. The joke is pretty slim: Grown men behaving like spoiled kids, manipulating and terrorizing their parents as only children can. But what's hateful in a child of nine can be kind of funny in a 40-year-old, particularly when he's wearing a Pablo Cruise T-shirt. Oddly enough, the film's greatest virtue is that aside from a short speech at the end about holding on to your childhood dreams, it refuses to be anything more than unabashedly ridiculous. Even when it unexpectedly turns into THE PARENT TRAP, it knows better than to start taking itself seriously. And with Reilly and Ferrell rapping to a song called "Boats 'n' Hos," destroying their house while sleepwalking in their underwear and burying each other alive in the backyard, how could it?

Step Brothers Movie T-Shirts and Apparel

The comedy pairing of actor Will Ferrell and director Adam McKay has produced hits like Anchorman, Talladega Nights, and The Other Guys. What separates Step Brothers from those films though is an R-rating and therefore an excuse to ramp up the vulgarity of the ridiculous humor. The result is a very insane, very funny movie about two man children, played by Ferrell and Academy-Award nominee John C. Reilly, who suddenly become Step brothers. What plays out is what would most likely happen if two men in their forties who still live with their parents are forced to live with each other. We can confirm that our Step Brothers shirts are not brought to you by Prestige Worldwide.
