Avatar photo

When Safari becomes unresponsive, it can interrupt your whole workflow. While often a frustrating experience, you can easily get out of it with a few quick fixes.

Working as an Apple repair technician has shown me that Safari often hangs and becomes unresponsive for a variety of reasons. But luckily, it’s usually an easy fix.

Let’s explore why won’t safari quit, and how you can force quit it on your Mac.

Table of Contents

Key Takeaways

Quit via keyboard, quit via finder menu, use the apple menu to force quit, force quit from the dock, force quit using activity monitor, shut down your mac, keep your mac up-to-date, remove malware and system junk, final thoughts.

  • You might need to Force Quit Safari if it stops responding or freezes.
  • There are a few ways you can force quit Safari, the quickest way is undoubtedly using the keyboard shortcut , Option , Command , and Esc .
  • You can also force quit using the Apple menu or the dock , or even by killing the process via Activity Monitor.
  • While uncommon, you may have to shut down and restart your computer if Force Quit does not work.
  • To ensure Safari works as you expect it to, keep your Mac up-to-date with the latest software.
  • Additionally, keeping your Mac optimized and free from Malware will ensure Safari keeps working properly.

Why Won’t Safari Quit on Mac

Safari is Apple’s web browser that is automatically installed on all of their devices. Just like all web browsers, Safari sometimes freezes, and you are unable to quit the application. This can happen for several different reasons.

First, Safari may simply have too many tabs open . Are you someone who likes to have videos playing in the background while surfing the web with 100 different tabs open all at the same time?

Sometimes it isn’t your fault at all, but an issue with the application. You may need to reset the cache or update your software .

Lastly, it is possible that Safari is just frozen . In any of these cases, the following ways to Force Quit on Mac will help you close Safari when it is not responding.

Before we continue, let’s make sure you’re clear on how to quit Safari normally.

If you are in an application (Safari in this instance) and you press Command-Q on your keyboard , this quits the application.

Now, this is not a forced quit, so it may not work in this instance, but it is worth a try if clicking the red X is not working for you right now.

You can also quit Safari by right-clicking on the icon in the dock . Then select Quit.

If neither of the usual ways of closing Safari work or the Quit Safari button is grayed out, then you will need to Force Quit the app.

How to Force Quit Safari on Mac?

When Safari refuses to quit, the best course of action is to use the handy Force Quit option.

The fastest way to Force Quit Safari is by using the keyboard shortcut . This special key combination will bring up the Force Quit menu.

Step 1: Hit the Option , Command , and Esc keys simultaneously. That will open the Force Quit menu.

Step 2: Once this menu opens up, select Safari and Force Quit.

Step 3: Click Force Quit again to confirm.

Simply hit the Apple icon in the upper left of your screen, then select Force Quit from the options. From here, you can select the app you would like to force quit from the menu.

Finally, you can simply click on the Safari icon on your dock. If Safari is unresponsive, you will get an option to Force Quit when you right click.

If Safari won’t force quit in the typical ways, you can always kill the active process through Activity Monitor.

To get started, just open Launchpad.

Open Activity Monitor .

Navigate to Safari and Click the X at the top.

Click Force Quit to Confirm.

If all else fails, simply shut down the computer. This will force Safari to restart.

Click the Apple menu, and Shut Down .

If you need to Force Shutdown your Mac, then simply Press and Hold the power button until the computer turns off.

Next, just turn your computer back on and check if Safari is functioning properly. To prevent any future issues with Safari, you should check for updates and make sure your Mac is optimized. Let’s discuss how to do that.

Safari could be malfunctioning due to out-of-date software, so checking for updates is wise if Safari freezes or becomes unresponsive.

To get started checking for updates, just click the Apple icon in the upper left corner and select System Preferences from the drop-down menu . Alternatively, you can hit the System Preferences icon on the dock .

The following window will pop up. Look for Software Update . Open this and install any updates that are available.

Sometimes Safari doesn’t work properly when you have too much junk on your computer. While anything from minor software bugs to malware could cause Safari to malfunction, checking for these problems can be time-consuming.

A third-party app like CleanMyMac X is pretty helpful for taking care of this stuff for you in one shot. Probably the most helpful thing, in this case, is flushing your DNS cache. Resetting your cache can often fix issues related to Safari not working properly.

how to force quit safari

After downloading and installing the app, just launch it and select Maintenance from the sidebar. Here you can select options like running maintenance scripts and flushing your DNS cache. Just hit run, and the app will handle the rest.

Additionally, if a malware issue is causing Safari to become unresponsive, you can easily check for and remove it using CleanMyMac X.

While not necessarily a free program, you can try it out with a free trial, and an annual subscription will save you more time than it is worth. You can read our full CleanMyMac X review to learn more.

There are several reasons why Safari may not be quitting. These include out-of-date software, cache, too many tabs open, and simply being frozen. We hope these methods of Force Quitting applications helped you to get Safari closed out.

In order to prevent future issues with Safari, and other applications as well, you should ensure you run software updates frequently.

Additionally, third-party apps like CleanMyMac X can help prevent problems with Safari by automatically running maintenance scripts, and clearing malware and system cache, among a host of other handy tasks.

Did these methods work for you? Were you able to quit Safari? Let us know in the comments below!

  • Open Activity Monitor > find the task you want to quit > click it > click the X icon > click Force Quit .

When apps freeze up on your Mac, it can be a minor annoyance or a big problem. Sometimes, it can make your entire Mac unresponsive. This article provides three ways to force quit apps, quit frozen apps, and stop background tasks on a Mac.

All instructions in this article use macOS Catalina (10.15) , but the basic concepts apply to all later versions of the macOS.

How Do You Kill a Task on a Mac?

Perhaps the easiest and quickest way to kill a task on a Mac—another way to refer to quitting a program—is to use the macOS Dock. Here's what to do:

In the Dock, right click the app you want to quit.

If you don't have a mouse or trackpad and so can't right click, hold down the Control key and then click the app.

Click Quit and the app and all of its windows will be closed.

Clicking the red X button in the top left corner of a window does not quit an app. It only closes that window, but leaves the app still running.

How Do You Force Quit an Application on a Mac?

If the application you want to quit is frozen up or won't respond to other commands, try using macOS's built-in Force Quit menu. Force Quit is just what it sounds like—a more powerful version of the Quit command you can use when Quit isn't working. Here's what to do:

Open the Force Quit menu. There are two ways to open the Force Quit:

  • Apple menu > Force Quit .
  • Press the option + command + Esc keys at the same time.

In the Force Quit menu, click the program you want to quit.

Click Force Quit .

In the confirmation dialog, click Force Quit again to quit the program.

How Do I Stop Apps From Running in the Background on My Mac?

The final way to quit a program, especially a frozen program, is also how you stop apps from running in the background. Many programs can perform tasks in the background, allowing them to perform functional tasks for you while you're doing something else (for example, Mail checking your email while you browse the web or Music playing a song while you work on a spreadsheet).

Background tasks are usually helpful, but they can sometimes go awry, use memory, or drain your battery. In those cases, you'll want to stop the app from running in the background by following these steps:

Open Activity Monitor .

This program comes pre-installed on all Macs and can be found in Applications > Utilities .

Activity Monitor shows all programs, services, and tasks running on your Mac at that moment. Frozen apps will be red and say Not Responding next to them. Browse or search Activity Monitor to find the task you want to quit and click it.

With the program you want to quit selected, click the X button in the top left corner.

The confirmation dialog offers two options for quitting:

  • Force Quit: Click this when you want to close a program right away. This is best for apps that are frozen.
  • Quit: Click this to quit the program when doing so won't cause data loss or interfere with other programs.

From the Safari menu, select Safari > Quit Safari or use the Command+Q keyboard combination to quit the app. If those methods don't work, try right-clicking and quitting Safari from the Dock or selecting the Apple menu > Force Quit > Safari . You could also open Activity Monitor and quit Safari from the CPU tab.

To end a screen recording on your Mac with QuickTime Player, go to the menu bar and select the Stop button. Alternatively, press Command+Control+Esc .

From the app menu, select Terminal > Quit Terminal . To quit active commands within a session, type exit , and press Return . If you need a refresher or help with Terminal, browse our guide on Mac Terminal commands .

If something goes wrong, and your Mac is frozen to death and become totally unresponsive, the only thing that will work is restarting your Mac.

Method: Press and hold “ Control ” + “ Command ” + “ Power ” buttons at the same time. You can release the buttons once the Mac restarts.

This is the last resort because you not only force quit Safari, but also any other running apps or services. Do this with caution though, because if you are in a middle of working on a project, force restarting Mac may cause data loss.

In general, you should! Safari updates once you update your Mac, which frequently resolves issues with the web browser.

If you are having problems with Safari, follow these steps: select the Apple icon, press about this Mac, and system updates. If you need updates, you’ll see them here together with update instructions.

Dealing with an unresponsive app on your iPhone or iPad? We'll show you how to fix it!

Quick Links

What does force quitting do, how to force quit apps on an iphone, how to force quit apps on an ipad.

Sometimes, an app gets stuck on a screen or stops responding. If you force quit the app on your iPhone or iPad, it "unsticks" everything. We'll show you how!

When you close an app on your iPhone or iPad and go back to the Home screen, you don't actually quit the app; it's still running in the background. You can think of it as "pausing" the app.

If an app crashes, is stuck, or generally behaving badly, force quitting is likely the best option. This actually quits the app, and when you open it again, it loads up fresh. Any temporary issues you were experiencing with that app should be fixed.

The process of opening the App Switcher and force quitting an app on an iPhone is slightly different depending on which model  you have and which version of iOS it uses.

First, let's talk about the newer iPhones (X, XS, XS Max, XR, or later) which have the notch at the top of the screen and don't have a Home button.

On your iPhone, stay in the troublesome app or open the one you want to force quit. Swipe up from the bottom (the Home bar) of the iPhone screen.

Swipe up from Home bar

Hold your finger on the display as you approach the middle of the screen. When you see a preview of the app in card size, lift your finger to open the App Switcher.

Swipe up from the Home bar and hold to reveal the app switcher

You can now scroll horizontally in this interface to see all the previously opened apps. When you see the app you want to quit, swipe up on its preview. The card should disappear through the top of the display.

Swipe up on the app preview to force quit the app

If you use an iPhone X that runs iOS 11, you have to tap and hold the app preview, and then tap the red "-" (minus sign) button to quit the app.

If you're iPhone has a physical Home button, just double-press it to open the App Switcher, and then swipe up on the app preview to quit that app.

The method to force quit apps on an iPad is similar to the one for iPhone, but the interface is different.

If you have a newer iPad Pro with Face ID (that runs iOS 12,  iPadOS 13 , or higher), swipe up from the bottom of the screen to the middle area, hold for a second, and then let go to reveal the App Switcher.

Swipe up from bottom of the iPad screen to reveal App switcher

You see a grid of previously opened apps. Find the one you want to force quit and swipe up on the preview to dismiss it.

Swipe up on app preview to quit the app on the iPad

If your iPad has a physical Home button, double-click it to open the App Switcher. If you run iOS 12 (or iPadOS 13) on an older iPad with a Home button, you can still swipe up from the bottom of the screen to access the App Switcher.

After you quit the app, find it on the Home screen (or use Spotlight search to locate it), and then tap on it to open it again. The app should now work fine.

Safari Won't Quit? How to Force Quit Safari Browser

If your Safari browser is frozen, it won’t quit even if you try to. It can be frustrating but the good thing is that there are ways to fix this problem.

The easiest quick-fixes to force quit Safari include closing Safari from the Terminal or the Activity Monitor. However, you might want to pass up the default Mac browser in favor of other browsers like Kingpin to fix the issue once and for all. A common question bothering Mac users is ‘Why isn’t my Mac letting me quit Safari’? No matter how fast and safe the Safari browser is, you may not be able to quit it sometimes. Mac users often complain that they can’t even force quit Safari at times.

Try Kingpin Private Browser for Free »

Why is my Safari not quitting?

The most probable reason would be that the quit button or link is disabled. Another factor could be the system’s RAM being occupied. If your browser slows down or even freezes , a Ram overload is highly likely. This will slow down Mac as well. The third reason that could cause the browser to crash is you have not updated your Safari in a while . Older versions cannot keep up with current website features.

Now, while this certainly is annoying, there are a number of ways around it. Read on below to find out how you can quickly quit the Safari browser on Mac in 7 different ways when it is no longer responding:

#1. Quit Safari from the Terminal app

The Terminal lets you access your Mac to some extent. Not only can you quit Safari through this, but also perform a number of other tasks.

To quit Safari, open Terminal from Utilities and type in the following text:

Osascript -e ‘quit app “Safari” ‘

Applications > Utilities > Osascript -e ‘quit app “Safari”

If this doesn’t work, try force quitting the app from the Terminal itself.  Click on Application and then click on Utilities to open Terminal. Or press down Control and Space together to open it. Once you have it open, type ‘killall safari’ and hit Enter.

That takes care of the issue.

Applications > Utilities > Terminal > killall Safari

#2. Quit Safari using the Activity Monitor

If you are not successful with the Terminal, you can always attempt to close the browser through the Activity Monitor. You will find it in the Utilities section. You can either use a keyboard shortcut like Command + Space or go to Applications.

Click Applications to open it and then click on Utilities. Look for the CPU tab and click on it to find Safari. Or, type ‘Safari’ in the search box on the top right. Go to the top left side of the Activity Monitor window and click on the sigh ‘X’. Finally, select Force Quit.

Applications > Utilities > CPU > Safari > X > Force Quit

#3. Restart Mac to quit Safari

Restarting your system can actually help you close the unresponsive browser app. When your system stops, so do all the apps running on it, and so does Safari. Press down the power button long enough to reboot the computer. Safari should have closed down.

Restarting in the Safe mode is also an option. When you are sure that Safari is working fine, you can restart normally. Also, now is the time to check for Mac updates. Once the operating system is using the latest Version, Safari does too. Get those updates and download them, clean out caches, disable extensions and remove all user data.

Be sure to save important works before you restart. This method is particularly useful when you have trouble quitting the browser through the Terminal or Activity Monitor feature.

#4. Quit Safari from Dock

Another quick option would be to quit the app from Dock. Look for the Safari app icon in the Dock and do a right-click on it. From the pop-up menu that opens, select and click on Quit. This effectively closes Safari.

Dock > right-click Safari > Quit

#5. Quit Safari using the keyboard

If you are unsure about typing in commands you don’t quite understand, why not use keyboard shortcuts to get the job done?

You can perform this action while still browsing on Safari. Press down Command, Option, and Escape keys simultaneously. The Force Quit Application window gets displayed. From there, just select Safari and click on Force Quit.

Command + Options + Escape > Force Quit Application > Safari > Force Quit

#6. Quit using the Apple menu

The Apple Menu is a good place to begin. You can easily quit a frozen Safari from right here. Click on the Apple icon. Find it on the top left corner of your home screen. From there, select Force Quit Safari. Immediately a new window opens. It is called the Force Quit Application. Choose Safari and click on Force Quit. This is likely to resolve the issue.

Apple > Force Quit Safari > Force Quit Applications > Safari > Force Quit

#7. Move to a different browser

Force quitting Safari is certainly quick and easy but the problem is the browser tends to get stuck quite frequently. When you are focused on work or immersed in gaming, or browsing restricted content, it might cause chaos if Safari stops responding. In order to enjoy seamless browsing, switching to a different, faster, more secure browser, like Kingpin , might just be the solution.

As a default incognito browser, it offers users online safety and doesn’t save browsing data. When you move to Kingpin, you automatically steer clear of the pitfalls of Safari. So while you still use Apple’s inbuilt browser, you can use Kingpin additionally to perform online banking, shopping, or private browsing without having to pause midway.

So, as you might have realized by now, there are different ways to fix a nonresponsive Safari browser. From force quitting through Mac apps to using keyboard shortcuts, you can now close the frozen browser without further ado. Also, if you find it tedious to type in texts, or click on a dozen different icons, just make the switch to an additional browser like Kingpin . This effectively rids you of Safari freezing issues and lets you browse without interruption.

Enjoy PIN-protected browsing, avoid tracking and forget about cookies (the browser does not store either these or user data after your browsing session is up) when you browse through Kingpin . Fix Safari, enjoy the benefits of an additional browser and engage in virtual activities without a break.

If an app isn't responding when you click the X button or if there's no way to get to the option to close an app, the first and simplest alternative involves using the taskbar. If you hover the mouse over the app's icon, you should see another X button in the corner. Try clicking that.

Alternatively, you can right-click the icon on the taskbar and choose Close window (or Close all windows ).

If an app is completely unresponsive, there's a good chance this method still won't work, but it's worth a shot.

Press Alt+F4

This method is self-explanatory. The easiest way to force-quit an app is to press Alt+F4 on your keyboard while the app is active and in the foreground. This should close it instantly. Be careful not to close other apps instead, though.

Quit an app by using Task Manager

Task Manager is one of the hero solutions to many people's problems in Windows, and it's a very common way to force-quit apps. If you have an unresponsive app, try these steps:

  • Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete ( Del ) on your keyboard.
  • Select Task Manager in the dialog box.
  • Locate the unresponsive app and click it.
  • Click End task .

It may take a couple of seconds, but this should effectively close the app.

If you want quick access to this option, you can go to the Settings app , under System > For developers and turn on the End task toggle. This will add an End task button to the taskbar, which is more effective than the usual X button.

Quit an app using the Settings app

Another method available in Windows 11 for closing an app is the Settings app. This works for only some apps, though — specifically "modern" apps in the Microsoft Store. To use this method, follow these steps:

  • Open the Settings app.
  • Choose Apps from the side menu.
  • Click Installed apps .
  • Find the app you want to quit, click the ellipsis (...) button, and then click Advanced options .
  • Scroll down to the Terminate button and click it.

Quit an app with Command Prompt

If you'd rather use Command Prompt to do things on your system, there's a way to close apps using a command called taskkill . Here's how:

  • Right-click the Start menu button on the taskbar and choose Terminal . Alternatively, press Windows key+R on your keyboard to open the Run dialog box, enter cmd , then press Enter .
  • Enter the following command to see a list of all running apps on your system: tasklist
  • Find the app you want to close, and note its name under Image name .
  • Enter the following command, replacing {imagename} with the name of the app you want to close: taskkill /im {imagename} /f

Once you do this, all processes associated with the image name will be forcibly terminated and the app will close.

What to do if your PC is still frozen

If you've tried all these methods and your PC is still frozen, you might have to reboot the computer and start fresh. Normally, the best way to do this is from the Start menu. However, if Windows is completely unresponsive, press and hold the power button for about 5 seconds to force the computer to shut down. If a specific app keeps giving you issues, you may have to uninstall it and then reinstall it. You might also have to update your drivers .
