Exploring the Ortovox TOUR RIDER 30 Backpack Review

' src=

Venturing into the backcountry demands reliable gear that can seamlessly blend functionality, durability, and comfort. The Ortovox TOUR RIDER 30 Backpack is that ideal companion for small and mid-range tours, offering both a sleek design and fit with just the right amount of room to carry all of your essentials.

30L Capacity

Inside Ortovox Touring Backpack

With a generous 30-liter capacity, the Ortovox TOUR RIDER 30 strikes a balance between spaciousness and practicality. The backpack’s dimensions (approx. 55 x 30 x 20 cm) provide ample room for essential gear without compromising on the sleek and streamlined profile. In the areas that need it most, the material is reinforced to ward against abrasion, adding an extra layer of resilience.

If you are a conscious consumer, you’ll appreciate knowing that Ortovox assures the product was manufactured under fair working conditions in conformity with the Fair Wear Foundation, the backpack contains no environmentally harmful per- or polyfluorinated chemicals (PFCs), and it was produced in the most environmentally friendly way possible. With any unavoidable CO2 emissions being offset, the backpack is rated climate neutral.

Safety + Accessibility

Ortovox Snow Safety Pocket

I’m always a fan of backpacks having a separate compartment for my avalanche gear strategically placed for quick access if I ever need it. The TOUR RIDER 30’s dedicated compartment fits my shovel and probe snuggly, with loops to hold the probe and shovel handle.

Intuitive Design

Crista Valentino Ski Touring

One standout feature is the backpack’s design. The TOUR RIDER 30 boasts a well-thought-out layout with multiple compartments, making organization a breeze. The main compartment is accessible from both the front and back panel. This gains major points because I hate digging through my backpack to access what’s fallen to the bottom or pulling out my water just to have to shove it (unsuccessfully) back in at the top of my pack where it sloshes around.

A mid-size zippered compartment at the top lets me store my ski straps, an extra buff, and sunscreen. I’ve tried using it for sunglasses or goggles and they  fit, but I’m not sold on it. More on that below. A vertical front pocket is slim, but I’ve found it’s a great place to store extra ski straps, a thin pair of gloves, and some not-crushable snacks.

Comfortable Carry System

Women Carrying Skis on Backpack

The backpack incorporates an ergonomic and adjustable carry system that ensures comfort during extended tours. Padded shoulder straps, a breathable back panel, and a hip belt contribute to an ergonomic fit. I have a tiny waist and the waist belt on backpacks are typically impossible for me to get tight enough for them to actually be useful.

This pack’s design fit my body much better than others (although you’ll see in the photo that I still have it pulled as tight as possible and there’s a significant amount of extra strap looped up. I’ll usually just trim those down to a manageable size). I like that I have two ways to carry my skis: A Frame or Diagonal. There is also a snowboard and snowshoe carry set up plus loops for hiking poles or an ice axe.

  • 7 compartments
  • Access to the main compartment from the front and back panel
  • Separate avalanche gear compartment
  • Two option ski carry (A-Frame or diagonal)
  • Snowboard and snowshoe attachment
  • Ice ax and hiking pole loops
  • Chest strap with signal whistle
  • Integrated helmet net
  • Map compartment
  • Hydration system compatible
  • Polyester 600D 100% recycled material

What Can Be Improved?

I only have one main gripe about the Ortovox TOUR RIDER 30: the goggle compartment. The mid-size zipper on the top of the pack seems like it wants to be a goggle or sunglass compartment, but it feels a bit too tight and isn’t fleece lined. I would have preferred to see this pocket be better designed.

Overall Impression

Women Hiking Teton Pass with Skis

The Ortovox TOUR RIDER 30 ($160.00) is a great option for short to medium length backcountry tours. The under-designed goggle compartment isn’t detrimental enough for me to not recommend this pack, and it’s currently my go-to for those half-day adventures. The backpack’s durability, avalanche safety integration, and thoughtful design make it a compelling choice for those who prioritize performance and functionality in their winter adventures.

Crista's weekly goal is to spend more hours outside than she spends sitting in front of her computer, but sometimes needs to compromise by sending emails from the trail. Crista has spent the last decade travelling the world leading an environmental NGO and supporting community-led development projects in rural areas. She found her home in Jackson 15 years ago when she discovered that a place actually existed where powder days took priority, showers could be optional, and finally no one cared what style of shoes you were wearing.

Our TOUR RIDER 30 will equip you for long day tours in any terrain. Clever details make this ski touring backpack a practical, versatile companion in the mountains. Your shovel and probe can be comfortably stowed in a separate, emergency equipment compartment where they’ll still be easily accessible. The spacious main compartment is accessible from the top and back, which means all backpack contents will be easily accessible, not least thanks to the bright interior colors. Load control cords, in combination with the foam back and ergonomic straps, allow for balanced weight distribution even over lengthy periods. Even so, a tailored fit means this ski touring backpack will move with you. Selected fastening options for skis, snowboards, snowshoes, ice ax and poles as well as a helmet net and hip pocket make the TOUR RIDER 30 an extremely versatile ski touring backpack. It also features hydration system compatibility for athletic ascents and descents. That’s why our TOUR RIDER 30 is the ideal companion particularly on longer ski tours.

Northeast Alpine Start

Gear reviews, trip reports, and how-to articles for northeast adventures, gear review- ortovox tour rider 30 backpack.

For the majority of the winter I have been touring in the Ortovox Tour Rider 30 . Ultimately it’s a well thought out design that rides well but it did have a couple small quirks I’ll share in my review.

Ortovox Tour Rider 30 Backpack Review

As always let’s start with the manufacture description and specs before digging into the details.

Description

The Tour Rider 30 is the ideal backpack for long day tours. In addition to a separate safety compartment, the backpack is also equipped with ski and snowboard fastenings, front and rear access to the main compartment and an ice axe and hiking pole fastening. As with all ORTOVOX backpacks, the Tour Rider 30 has an integrated signal whistle and chest strap. The body-hugging cut, the load control cords in combination with the foam back and ergonomic straps make this the perfect backpack.

  • Chest strap with signal whistle
  • Ice axe and hiking pole loops
  • Bright Inside
  • Water-resistant zipper
  • Separate safety compartment
  • Access to main compartment: front
  • Compression strap
  • Hydration system compatible
  • Access to main compartment: back

MATERIAL 450D Polyester + 600D Polyester

Ortovox Tour Rider 30 Backpack Review

What I love

This pack has a front panel that allows almost complete access to every nook and cranny in the main compartment but if what you are looking for is tucked away at the very bottom the whole back panel zips open for total access.

The foam panels in the back panel and the gel-like closed cell foam used in both the shoulder straps and waist belt is the perfect material for helping this pack carry well on long up tracks. The pack rides a little high on me which worked well when I was using it with a ski mountaineering harness.

Lightweight and Streamlined

Weighing only 2 pounds and having tapered sides and bottom this pack has that “bullet” feel to it and is unlikely to get caught while bushwhacking your way into the next drainage in search of fresh lines.

Ortovox Tour Rider 30 Backpack Review

What I would change

There is a small zippered pocket on the top that at first appears to be a goggle pocket but isn’t fleece lined or quite big enough for a pair of goggles. I used it to keep my headlamp, knife, and a few snacks handy but I’d like the option to stow my goggles in that area. The avalanche gear storage is a bit interesting on this pack. The probe and shovel handle have dedicated slots inside on the back panel while the shovel blade fits best in a zippered pocket on the outside of the pack. I prefer to keep my tools all in one spot and generally lean towards external avalanche safety gear pockets (like on the Ortovox Haute Route that I am also reviewing) that do not require accessing the main compartment to remove or stow.

For short to medium length back-country ski tours this is a really nice option. Small enough to be useful for side-country touring and big enough to stretch into a full day tour this is a solid choice in a line up of well designed Ortovox packs and one you should consider taking a look at!
