Rajasthan has my heart but Udaipur truly has my soul.

It’s straight from the pages of a bohemian romantic fairy tale and you will feel like royalty as you wander around the breathtaking Lake Pichola.

Udaipur is more like a mood and you will surely follow its rhythm while you’re here.

It’s often called the Venice of the East due to the 5 gorgeous lakes, romantic atmosphere, and pleasant weather.

You will fall in love with the mysticism, the floating palaces, the architecture, and the life force that runs through this city.

These are all the unmissable things to do in Udaipur!

12 unmissable things to do in Udaipur

1. feel the breeze of the majestic lake pichola.

There are many lakes in Udaipur but Lake Pichola stands the test of time by being one of the most romantic lakes in the East.

The sparkling waters surrounded by the Aravalli mountain range create a cool breeze that has a certain magic to it.

Add on the fact that it boasts a majestic floating palace in the middle and you’ve landed in a dream world!

Although there isn’t a specific route to explore Lake Pichola, the many Ghats which are pick-pocketed around provide a great panoramic view of it all.

Ambrai Ghat is the best for a view of the Taj Lake Palace in the open garden nearby.

2. Check into the Taj Lake Palace

This will cost you a pretty penny but how many times in your life can you say you’ve made residence on a floating palace?!

Only accessible by boat from the royal dock, this hotel is up there as one of the best in the entire world.

Its white archways laced with bougainvilleas create a spectacular retreat.

Famous for its feature in the James Bond movie Octopussy , it was originally built as a summer palace for the Maharana of Udaipur (Maharaja being a king that was defeated in battle and a Maharana being undefeated).

Even in the peak temperatures of Indian summer, the whirlwind breezes create a cool respite.

When you check in, you’re made to feel like royalty. The Taj group cannot be beaten in service and during my stay, they outdid themselves as I had quite a few calamities.

Check out ‘Checking in: Taj Lake Palace, Udaipur’ for a full review and some funny travel faux pas I made!

3. Step back in time at the Udaipur City Palace

Out of all the city palaces in Rajasthan, Udaipur City Palace is by far my favourite.

There’s just so much colour and character in every room.

It certainly packs out during peak season and sometimes the narrow corridors to make your way through can get claustrophobic!

The views of the lake and beyond are spectacular and you can spend at least a few hours here enjoying the grandeur.

Be sure to check out their restaurant and bar on the exit, I sipped a delicious rose flavour Gin and Tonic.

4. Take a boat ride on Lake Pichola

It’s almost criminal to visit Udaipur and not take a boat ride on Lake Pichola .

Here, you can get up close and personal with famous sights and luxury hotels.

I booked my boat tour through the city palace and rode at sunset. You’ll be paying more for a sunset cruise, but it’s totally worth it for the colours the setting sun makes on the city palace and houses on the lake!

I fell in love with it and couldn’t stop snapping my camera. It was a golden hour on steroids.

Typically the boats do a 360 turn and pull up at the Jag Mandir which sits across from the Lake Palace.

Here, you can have a look around for as long as you like.

After the sun has set behind the mountains, it creates an awesome purple glow in the sky. A beautiful backdrop for the skyline.

5. Watch the sunset at the Monsoon Palace

Another beautiful place is perched on a hill towering above the city. You can make your way up by Land Rover from the booking office or take a breathless hike to the top.

Amazingly, you’ll be waiting for a 5-minute sunset. But, it’s 5 minutes worth waiting for.

I almost missed the whole thing as I was busy snapping the views from the other side!

Luckily the kind security guard pointed me in the right direction.

Watch out for the monkeys that play mischief here, they’ll be on the prowl for all things shiny and edible. They will also sit on top of your car and refuse to leave!

The winter season in Rajasthan creates a romantic orange glow at sunset and luckily these guys were the perfect muse for photos.

6. Grab a cheap Tali at Neelam’s restaurant

It’s the number one place to eat on Tripadvisor but Neelam still charges next to nothing for her homemade Tali.

A typical Tali consists of two Indian vegetarian dishes, dal (lentils), chutney, chapatis, and rice!

It’s a massive meal and it only costs 150 rupees which is perfect for the budget-conscious traveller.

Neelam makes all her food herself and the service has a friendly guest house feel to it.

You can find her place behind the Jagdish temple. You and your wallet won’t regret it!

7. Visit the Jagdish temple

Sitting in the middle of Main Street by the City Palace, the Jagdish temple is a beautiful place to visit.

It was built in 1561 and is dedicated to Lord Vishnu the creator of the world.

It is still actively used for Hindu worship today, so remember to dress appropriately.

The carvings are the most spectacular part of the architecture here and tell the stories of the creation of the universe.

It was so peaceful walking around here and listening to the Bhajans being sung.

Remember to take your shoes off and not bring your camera inside as photography is strictly prohibited.

8. Let the Bagore Ki Haveli dance show bedazzle you

This fun and lively cultural show will transport you all over Rajasthan to watch in wonder at the different dancing styles, puppet shows, and religious prose along with traditional music.

The vibrant costumes in all different colours make a real statement on the stage.

The dancing is the most impressive part and you’ll see the Chari dance with pots of fire placed in their heads!

The ladies are all so beautiful. The most prestigious however was a 70-year-old lady, who balanced and danced with 7 heavy pots on her head! It was aging goals.

I kept thinking, I can hardly sit with my legs crossed for an hour yet without fidgeting and she can carry all those pots, walk-on glass, and dance?! Crazy.

It packs out almost every night, even in the off-season, so get in the queue promptly at 6.15 pm to guarantee a ticket and a good seat. Shows are from 7-8 pm daily.

9. Dine like royalty at Upré

There are many luxury dining options to choose from by Lake Pichola, but nothing quite beats Upré.

You can lounge on their royal cots overlooking gorgeous views of the lake and city palace.

Food is midrange to high in price but the flavours, quality, and service are so worth it!

In high season it is worth making a reservation here to save waiting. The service and location make you feel like Maharani with a feast for a queen!

10. Ride the ropeway to the Karni Mata temple

Another way to get an aerial view of the city and beyond is to visit the Karni Mata temple via the ropeway.

I wouldn’t recommend walking up the hill as there are warning signs for panthers and cobras everywhere.

Tickets are 97 rupees return (I’ve never understood these figures as anyone ever has those 3 rupees change, they usually just give sweets).

It’s a hot ride to the top and there is a typical Indian queue to wait in line and by that I mean there really isn’t one!

Despite the ride, the views from this side are outstanding and it’s worth sticking around a while getting a birds-eye view of the whole city and beyond.

On the way back, you will need to hand your ticket to the ropeway counter and receive a number.

Once your number is called on the tannoy, you can go back down via the cable car.

It took around 15-20 minutes in peak season for my number to be called, but there’s a good café nearby to pass the time with a cold drink.

11. Visit the Ahar Cenotaphs

This place is a little-known secret in Udaipur city centre which is located a few kilometres away from the tourist hub of Lake Pichola.

It’s a labyrinth of archways and has cenotaphs for days.

You can visit at sunrise and watch the rays of first morning light slowly cover them in a golden glow.

Be warned that there is a fee for photos by the security guard who runs a little monopoly on the side.

I guess this is India and a business can be found anywhere.

Click here to read my complete guide for the cenotaphs here!

12. Take a day trip out of the city

After you’ve ticked off all the things to do in Udaipur is fantastic but the majority of it can be covered in one to two days.

After that, there are a wealth of day trips you can organise out of the city for a cheap price.

You can visit the beautiful living fort at Chittorgarh , marvel at the unique carvings in the Ranakpur Jain Temple, or climb Khumbarlargh fort ; the second largest in the world (the first being the Great Wall of China).

Private taxis should be around 2000 rupees for a full day tour or you can go on a sharing tour for 600/700 rupees per person.

Khumbarlargh fort and the Ranakpur Jain Temple you can cover together in one full day trip and Chittorgarh you can cover in another day as both are in polar opposite directions of Udaipur!

Udaipur City Guide | Third Eye Traveller

So, that’s all the best things to do in Udaipur!

So, these are my personal 12 things to do in Udaipur. But, there are plenty more things to get up to in this romantic city of lakes.

There are still so many nooks and crannies of Lake Pichola I haven’t explored and cafés I haven’t had chai in yet.

It’s a city that will make you want to come back for more and I plan to do just that!

You might be happy to add - the sahastrabahu temple ( it is quite hidden and marvelous enough to throw one off schedule very easily) and of course the lake before it ; it is surrounded by mountains and below the lake, The winding road down takes you to - the most famous only one in the country EklingJi temple.... said to be anywhere between 2000 to 3000 years old but, it is clearly the oldest in entire Udaipur regions. There are many other things and places and ancient sites on both sides of the highway of Udaipur.... Just have lots of time and water with you 🙂

But the aim of this article is just to provide some suggestions from my personal experiences which could help you in planning your own trip to Udaipur.

Udaipur is as dreamy and enchanting as it’s often portrayed in movies and photographs. The old-world exuberance harmoniously exists with a tinge of modern European essence of rooftop cafes and lakeside retreats. There are many best places to visit in Udaipur, with several popular ‘Instagram-worthy’ spots. But its true authentic beauty lies in its numerous colorful alleys and hidden corners.

Best Places to Visit in Udaipur- Ultimate Travel Guide

Udaipur is one of the most underrated and picturesque cities in Rajasthan, which often gets overruled by its more popular cousins like Jaipur and Jodhpur. It’s always said that a place that has water bodies, emanates an unusual kind of charm. And Udaipur with its numerous lakes is no different.

There is water everywhere! Almost around every bend. So much so that you begin to wonder if the city is just a collection of huge island masses floating on the water!

Udaipur’s Maharana Pratap Airport is 22km from the city center and it has connectivity to major cities in India like Delhi, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, etc. You can easily find taxis and autos to reach Udaipur city.

You can reach Udaipur by train from most of the Indian cities like Delhi, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Jaipur, Ajmer, etc and this is the mode of transportation adopted by most travelers.

Several passenger trains run on a daily basis, connecting Udaipur to other cities in Rajasthan. From the railway station, you can hire cabs or autos to reach your hostel/hotel. Udaipur city is around 3-4km from the station.

There are regular buses available to Udaipur city from major cities like Delhi, Jaipur, Mumbai. Udaipur is just an overnight-journey away from most of these cities, which makes it a perfect weekend destination.

You’ll also get to choose from a variety of options, from local buses to luxury ones, depending on your budget. The Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation has established connectivity to most of the cities within India.

Best Things to do in Udaipur for a Memorable Experience

Udaipur is an enthralling destination and there are endless things to do in this beautiful city! Before diving into the list of best places to visit in Udaipur, here’s a list of things I’d personally recommend doing. For an unforgettable and joyful experience in this city of lakes.

  • It’s a no-brainer that one of the top things to do in the city of lakes is to visit the lakes of course! Take a stroll around Lake Pichola or Fateh Sagar Lake during the night or late evening. And absorb the peaceful vibes of this enchanting White City.
  • Watch as many sunsets as possible in this city of lakes. Watching Udaipur’s surreal lakes turn liquid gold during the golden hour of sunset is one of the best ways to enjoy the beauty of this city.
  • Gorge on the famous Udaipur kachoris and other assortments of sweets, snacks, and street food while you drink in the vibe of this enchanting city. It’s an experience like no other.
  • If you’re an art freak or have an eye for art, you’ll find Udaipur to be nothing short of heaven! Watch out for the numerous quirky art shops lurking in the hidden lanes and by-lanes of Udaipur.

Lakes, cafes and delicious food

  • Go café hopping or art-shop-hopping from one colorful lane to another. Though the two activities are not really mutually exclusive! Since Udaipur’s exhaustive collection of quirky cafes are ladled with funky artsy souvenirs and artifacts.
  • Walk along the marble lanes of the old town, adjoining the Lake Pichola. It’s littered with shops full of rainbow-colored garments fluttering in the breeze, glittering funky jewels, and traditional turbans. Even if you’re not into shopping , just the sight of all the different colors will lift your heart!
  • Go for a boat ride in one of the numerous lakes. You can’t visit Udaipur and not go for a boat ride! It’s among the most clichéd things to do in Udaipur, but it’s clichéd for a reason!  The activity is best experienced either during sunrise or sunset when the water catches fire!
  • Grab a spot in one of the rooftop cafes overlooking the lakes. Gorging on delicious food while watching the city lights shimmering on the lake is an experience that is nothing short of spectacular!
  • Hunt for a secluded Ghat and spend some time in silence observing the water, the city, and its people. Especially visit Ambrai Ghat at night!

Getting Around in Udaipur

Most of the popular places are within walking distance from the old city center. You can also hire cabs and taxis which are aplenty throughout the city. Autos are one of the cheapest and affordable modes of transport. There are reliable Uber and Ola services throughout the city and this is the best way to explore Udaipur haggle-free.

Fun fact: I mostly explored the city through Ola Bike. It’s a taxi service, but on a bike and it’s insanely cheap and reliable. Sometimes as less as 25INR for places as far as 5km.

There are also several places where you can rent four or two wheelers for a self-drive trip.

How Many Days are Enough in Udaipur?

Most of the best places to visit in Udaipur are nearby. Making it easy to explore and a perfect destination for a quick getaway. If you’re short on time, 2 days are sufficient to explore the city’s main attractions.

And few of the beautiful locations are situated outside the city. It doesn’t matter if you’re someone who likes to take things slow. Or a traveler who likes to quickly tick off bucket list destinations. Udaipur has something to offer for every kind of traveler.

Here’s a list of some of the best places to visit in Udaipur. Along with some little tips, to make the most of your visit irrespective of the duration of stay.

Places to Stay in Udaipur

There’s certainly no dearth of accommodation in Udaipur. From rustic, cheap yet quality hostels to royal resorts, Udaipur has accommodation catering to every kind of traveler.

By choosing a central location, you’ll be able to experience the true essence of the local culture. The vibrant life and the calm amidst the chaos. And where the nonexistent traffic signals are often replaced by cows standing in all of their calm authority.

However, for the best experience, it’s recommended to find a place overlooking Lake Pichola and also located centrally.

I’d recommend Hostel Mantra . Located in one of the colorful by lanes and just a few meters away from Lal Ghat , this hostel has amazing vibes and wonderful hosts. The dorm rooms are affordable, beautiful, and vibrant. The fact that it’s a palace converted into a hostel, should be enough to give you an idea of its beauty.

Udaipur can be a low budget destination or a luxury destination, and it all depends on your preference. If you’re a budget traveler, it’s possible to find reasonable and affordable accommodation for as low as $4 or INR 300 per night. Or sometimes even less if you happen to visit during the offseason.

Zostel Udaipur , Moustache, GoStops are some of the other hostels in Udaipur .

Best Time to Visit Udaipur

Udaipur sparkles differently in different seasons. Monsoon months from July to September are considered to be the offseason in Udaipur although it receives little rainfall. But the city radiates a different charm during this time with the lakes filled to the brim and air nipped with monsoon freshness!

If you’re looking for a cool and pleasant climate to explore, winter would be a perfect time. November to February are the winter months in Udaipur.

Summer comes with its share of inconveniences like the scorching sun and unbearable heat, but this is the perfect time for photographers as you’d be able to capture great shots of sunsets and sunrises from every corner of this beautiful city. April to June is the summer season in Udaipur.

17 Best Places to visit in Udaipur

The best way to enjoy this city is to stroll along its colorful lanes soaking in the glorious architecture of the white marble structures, shimmering golden lakes, and gorgeous Ghats. Udaipur is a city brimming with an abundance of elegance and charm. No wonder it is popularly known as the Venice of the East.

Here’s a list of 17 best places to visit in Udaipur

1) lake pichola.

Undoubtedly one of the best places to visit in Udaipur, Lake Pichola is a haven for sunset and water lovers and is one of the most popular attractions of Udaipur, and for good reason.

Take a stroll along its banks, watch a sunset , go for a boat ride , or just spend some quality time on one of the ghats set along the lakeside.

2) Bagore Ki Haveli

Havelis are an integral part of Rajasthani culture and a trip to Udaipur is incomplete without paying a visit to at least one of these beautiful Havelis. Bagore Ki Haveli, with its numerous balconies and terraces, offers great views of Lake Pichola and Gangour Ghat

This traditional mansion houses a museum and its cultural show , with traditional folk dance which is held every evening, is the highlight of the place. The Haveli lights up and glitters during the night shedding its glow around its vicinity.

3) Gangaur Ghat

This is the main ghat situated alongside Lake Pichola near Jagdish Temple area and is a picturesque place to watch the golden sunset from.

Marble steps lead down to the lake. Come dawn, and you can find the place abuzz with locals doing their chores, yet there’s the peace that comes with the early morning hours and the sunrise. This is one of the best places to visit in Udaipur in the early morning.

4) Ahar Cenotaphs

There are high chances that most people who’ve visited Udaipur, wouldn’t even have heard the name of this place. In fact, some of the locals themselves weren’t aware of it. The story behind how I managed to enter this place would probably make for a separate blog post, hence I shall save it for later.

One of my most favorite and certainly one of the best places to visit in Udaipur, these Royal Cenotaphs are in a state of dilapidation due to an absolute lack of awareness. However, the lack of tourists certainly makes them even more memorable and appealing. Make sure to drop by!

5) Maharana Pratap Smarak

This is one of the underrated places to visit in Udaipur. The memorial built in honor of Maharana Pratap’s courage and valor is an essential site of historical significance.

Located on top of Moti Margi or Pearl Hill, overlooking the Fateh Sagar Lake, it provides stunning panoramic views of the city. There’s a life-sized bronze statue of Maharana Pratap as well as a museum built on the premises with paintings and ancient artifacts. Stunning and delicate glassworks form the interior of the museum.

6) The Taj Lake Palace

Previously known as the Jag Niwas, this palace sits right in the middle of the lake on the Jag Mandir Island and has become an important part of Udaipur’s heritage and monuments .

It has now been taken over by the Taj group and is a popular luxury resort. You can take a boat ride to this place to enjoy the views and architecture.

7) Swaroop Sagar Bridge

One of the best times to enjoy the magical vibes of Udaipur is during the night when the city gets decorated with several colorful lights. With the lakes reflecting these orange and yellow glows everywhere, it transforms into a spectacular sight!

Udaipur is adorned with a number of ornamental arch bridges at various locations with makes for perfect vantage points to enjoy the city during the night.

8) Ambrai Ghat

My most favorite spot in the whole of Udaipur. The first time I accidentally stumbled upon this a few years back while on a family trip, I was blown away by its beauty! It was yet to be discovered by the masses and was known only to the locals. Now though it has transformed into a popular tourist spot and for the right reasons.

A place from where you can either watch the sunset or sunrise. But its true incredible beauty can only be experienced at night when the locals and tourists gather here for some peaceful time. You can also get a perfect view of Taj Lake Palace and City Palace from here and it’s especially beautiful at night.

9) Monsoon palace

Monsoon Palace or the Sajjangarh Palace is located on the outskirts of Udaipur City. And it offers great panoramic views of the Lake Pichola and Aravalli Ranges. It’s also an amazing spot to watch the sunset from and one of the best places to visit in Udaipur for great 360 degree views and photographs. You can reach this place by hiring a cab or an auto.

Something to be aware of: It’s not very easy to get Uber/Ola once you reach the top, especially after sunset. Hence plan accordingly.

10) Badi Lake

This tranquil lake is a little away from the city and not very popular yet, which makes it one of the offbeat, yet best places to visit in Udaipur. Probably the reason why it’s so beautiful. A serene place surrounded by the Aravalli hills and plenty of greenery, this is one of the lesser-known yet best places to visit in Udaipur.

11) Bahubali Hills

Situated a little away from Badi Lake , this beautiful and hidden spot is accessible through a narrow and obscure path winding through thickets and villages.

Although slightly difficult to reach, this is definitely one of the top best places to visit in Udaipur. It’s slowly gaining popularity among the tourists and is a beautiful spot to watch the sunset and sunrise from. Hire an auto or self-drive to this place on your next visit to Udaipur. Also, ensure to preserve its pristine beauty while you do so. This is one of the best places to visit in Udaipur during monsoons as the surrounding area would be filled with lush greenery!

12) City Palace

Situated on the banks of Lake Pichola in a beautiful combination of European, Chinese, and Medieval architecture , the City Palace is the most important and popular attraction in Udaipur.

With eleven palace complexes, built by different rulers at different times, it has several courtyards, bright elegant rooms, verandas, and hanging gardens to explore. The rooms are designed in bright colors with intricate details, mosaic patterns, and colorful glass tainted windows.

It also offers great panoramic views of Udaipur City, Lake Pichola, and Lake Palace. There are many shops, cafes as well as bathrooms located within the premises of the palace.

Although it’s certainly worth all the hype surrounding it, the extreme crowd which almost perpetually throngs the place can sometimes make the visit a tad bit less appealing. Hence if you plan on exploring the interiors of this gorgeous architecture, ensure to reach early.

But watching this gorgeous marvel in the night , when it gets sheathed with a golden clock is a delightful experience though.

13) Fateh Sagar Lake

The unending blue horizon of this lake is a pleasure to watch. Go for a drive around the lake or spend a peaceful evening here, strolling along its bank.

There are several cafes and restaurants surrounding this beautiful lake in Udaipur. If you have some spare time, you could also take a boat ride to Udaipur Nehru park situated at the center of the lake and spend some time under the shades of the trees.

14) Karni Mata Ropeway

Karni Mata is a temple on top of a hill that is accessible either by a short hike through stairs or through a cable ropeway. It’s a great spot to watch the sunrise from and it offers great views of Lake Pichola and the whole of Udaipur City.

15) Doodh Talai

The iconic Lake Pichola is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful attractions in Udaipur. But it often ends up grabbing the limelight from the other small pretty lakes and one such lake is Doodh Talai.

16) Shilpgram

This is one of the best places to visit in Udaipur if you love shopping. Famous for fairs that sell textiles, handicrafts, and other craft items, this village is a haven if you wish to indulge in some authentic Rajasthani shopping. You can find an assortment of options like marble articles, mirror works, colorful souvenirs, etc. Some other best places to visit in Udaipur for shopping are Bada Bazaar, Sadhana Emporium, Hathi Pol, Rajasthali, etc.

17) Saheliyon ki Badi

This is a pretty garden a little away from the city center. With Victorian statues and lotus pools, it’s one of the best places to visit in Udaipur for an early morning stroll and to enjoy the fragrance of the myriad of flowers.

Best Places to Eat in Udaipur

A trip to Udaipur is incomplete without at least one dinner at a restaurant offering stunning views of Lake Pichola. And there’s certainly no dearth of such beautiful restaurants in Udaipur. There are exorbitant as well as cheap places to indulge in some lip-smacking culinary experience and discover for yourself, why Udaipur is popularly called the ‘Venice of the East’. These numerous pretty cafes and restaurants are reason enough to pay a visit to this city and are a few of the best places to visit in Udaipur.

Some of my tried and tested favorite cafes and restaurants are: Harigargh Restaurant and Rainbow Restaurant for a dinner beside Lake Pichola, Rainbow Café, and Café Jheel for breakfasts, Café Grasswood for evening snacks and coffee.

Best Day-Trips to Take from Udaipur

Not only is the Udaipur city filled with a plethora of attractions, but there are also several places at a short distance from the main city which you can take day trips to.

Kumbalgargh fort:

Burrowed in the foothills of the Aravalli Mountain Range, Kumbhalgarh near Udaipur is at a distance of 90km from the city and would take around 2 hours to reach. It is a majestic fortress and a major tourist attraction.

A UNESCO World Heritage site, The Kumbhalgarh fort wall is India’s very own Great Wall, and the second-longest wall in the world covering a length of 36 km around the periphery of the fort.

Chittorgargh Fort:

Another UNESCO World Heritage Site, Chittorgargh or Chittor Fort is the largest fort in India. A sprawling citadel, more than 1,000 years old, with lavish palaces, temples & gateways. It is situated at a distance of 112km from Udaipur and can be covered in about 2.5 hours.

Ranakpur Jain Temple

Situated at a distance of 91km from Udaipur, this ancient Jain temple with intricate stone sculptures and carvings is definitely worth a visit. The place itself is remote and is accessible through winding roads amidst paddy fields and mountains.

Constructed entirely in white and amber marble adorned with elaborate carvings on its walls and pillars, this temple is an architectural marvel!

Aptly touted as the ‘City of Lakes’, Udaipur has a laid back slow vibe. It latches onto you the moment you catch sight of one of its beautiful tranquil lakes and you can easily spend over a week here absorbing its charm.

Udaipur city has managed to evade the ever pervading cloak of modernization and has preserved its whimsical charm. To date, I’ve been to Udaipur thrice. And given an opportunity, I definitely wouldn’t mind a couple more trips to this place!

Have you been to Udaipur? If you have, do tell me about your experience in the comments! And let me know if there’s any place I’ve missed coz I’m certainly going back again some day! 😉

Bahubali hills.

Famous for wedding photography and Instagram posts, Bahubali Hills is a craze among youngsters. It is a replica of a giant mountain located 15km from the city adjacent to Badi Lake. You can spend all day here with your buddies because it is less congested.

If you climb Bahubali Hills to the summit, you experience a breathtaking 360-degree vista, especially around sunset. It truly is a hidden treasure.

You can unwind at Lake Badi, 12 kilometers from Udaipur City, by taking a cab or a tuk-tuk. It is best to travel as a group and divide the cost. The short (20 minutes) walk is lovely. However, the road zigzags, so use caution.

A clear lake with ancient palaces in the background – that’s Udaipur for you. It’s the kind of place that stays with you, you know?

The city’s vibe is so chill, and those lakeside meals? Just wow. Plus, dining on a rooftop under the stars with the city lights twinkling and the lake mirroring it all – it’s unreal.

I keep going back for the sunsets alone; they’re like nothing else. Trust me, you’ll want to see it for yourself.

And when you do, just take it all in – it’s exactly why I can’t stop talking about this place.

Travel Guide for Udaipur: Things to Know Before Planning a Trip to Udaipur

Where’s udaipur.

Udaipur’s this gem in Rajasthan, northwestern India. It’s ringed by lakes, which is why people love to call it the City of Lakes . It’s also called the Venice of the East and It kind of feels like one when you see all the water around.

Udaipur is also called the White City because many of its buildings and the famous City Palace are made from a particular type of white marble.

The city’s packed with history – think palaces that tell tales of old royalty, like the famous City Palace, and gardens that are just a feast for the eyes.

And then you’ve got these intricately carved temples. Plus, the Aravalli Hills are all around you, adding to the charm. It’s like stepping into a royal story, but it’s real, and it’s all set in some seriously pretty nature.

Best Time to Visit Udaipur

lake pichola boating trip to udaipur rajasthan india

Udaipur, like the rest of Rajasthan or North India for that matter, remains super hot during the summer season (March to June) so obviously, it’s not wise to plan a trip to Udaipur during summer.

The monsoon season (July to September) is again not recommended as outdoor activities are not possible at all.

But then the rainy season has its own perks. It’s when the lakes, filled up with water, look captivating, and the Aravalli Range, covered in lush greenery, teems with life.

The winter season (October to February) is a perfect time to visit Udaipur. The weather is pleasantly cool and sunny (mostly) which makes sightseeing less hectic and more fun.

If you plan to visit in December (around Christmas and New Year holidays), make sure to book flights and accommodation well in advance.

How Many Days in Udaipur

Ideally, you’d want to set aside at least two to three days to really soak in the essence of this city.

Say you’ve got a weekend in Udaipur, it’s definitely delightful, but trust me, it’s just a teaser. You’ll get a taste of the city, sure. You cruise on Lake Pichola, catch the sunset, and maybe snap some epic photos. It’s great, but Udaipur deserves more of your time.

If you want to (you must) explore the historic forts, cultural landmarks, and unique temples scattered around Udaipur (there are tons), I recommend at least a week in Udaipur.

The first time we hit Udaipur, we only had two days. Not nearly enough. We were rushing around, trying to see everything, but it was a bit of a blur. We didn’t even get a chance to step outside the city.

The next trip, we wised up and stayed for four days , focusing only on the city, no side trips, no distractions. That’s when I really got to know the place. But, that was part of a bigger Rajasthan trip that lasted two weeks . We saved the places outside Udaipur for the road trip portion, which was a blast and took us all the way to Jodhpur .

The heart of the matter is that Udaipur is not your typical rush-around kind of place. It’s the kind of place where you can take a deep breath, wander around at your own pace, and really get the feel of things. More like a luxury in the busy buzz of India!

How to Get to Udaipur

Udaipur is well-connected by air, rail, and road to the major cities in India.

Located in Dabok , Maharana Pratap Airport serves Udaipur. About 22 km from the city, it’s a domestic airport that receives flights from the major cities in India. The leading airlines that have regular flights to and from Udaipur are Indigo, SpiceJet, Vistara, and Air India.

There’s nothing quite like the freedom a road trip offers. A strong road network links Udaipur to most of the Indian cities.

In cases where the driving distance is more than we can drive in one go, we break our journey at any city en route. Like if you’re driving from Delhi to Udaipur, Jaipur or Ajmer can be chosen for a night halt.

Also, if you don’t want to use your own car, you can hire a car. There are many tour operators that provide cars for rent.

We didn’t want to drive on our own so we chose a chauffeur-driven car for our trip to Rajasthan.

If you’re also touring Rajasthan and exploring the major cities of Rajasthan, it’s wise to hire a car and driver. You not only save time and hassle but also get to explore the off-center attractions or hidden gems.

A strong bus network connects Udaipur to various Indian cities. You can choose from AC coaches or state-run buses depending upon the budget.

The Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation (RSRTC) buses connect Udaipur with other major cities in Rajasthan.

Udaipur City Railway Station (UDZ) is the nearest railway station. There are direct trains from Delhi (Chetak Express and Mewar Express) Mumbai (Bdts Aii Udz Express), Kolkata (Annanya Express), Jaipur (Udaipur City–Jaipur Intercity-Express), Indore (Udaipur City Express), and Ahmedabad (Adi Udz Express).

How to Get Around Udaipur

Udaipur is a relatively compact city. Auto-Rickshaws, taxis, and local buses (limited) contribute to the public transportation system. The narrow lanes of the old city are best explored on foot as all the attractions are located within walking distance.

If you don’t want to walk, you can opt for an auto-rickshaw. A shared auto-rickshaw comes cheaper but it sticks to the fixed route and stops at the designated (popular) stops. A private auto-rickshaw is a bit pricey but it goes anywhere you name.

For the attractions outside the city like Monsoon Palace, Badi Lake, Chittorgarh Fort, Kumbhalgarh Fort, Ranakpur, Eklingji, and Nathdwara – a taxi is ideal. Uber and Ola are available in Udaipur.

Where to Stay in Udaipur

When in Udaipur, you’d want to stay in the old city for three reasons – firstly, most of the attractions are close by, secondly, you can drink in the views of the iconic Lake Pichola, and lastly, the old city is where the soul of Udaipur lies.

From boutique heritage hotels, and hostels, to guesthouses, and luxury hotels – the old city has all types of properties to suit your budget and style. Make sure you book in advance to score a Lakeview room.

If budget is your concern and you are looking for a hotel that offers value for money, we recommend Jagat Niwas Palace and Amet Haveli.

Located on the eastern banks of Lake Pichola, Jagat Niwas Palace is a favorite among travelers for its perfect location, courteous staff, A1 service, and good food.

Located on the northwestern bank of Lake Pichola, Amet Haveli is highly rated for its services, cleanliness, location, staff, and facilities. The hotel is best known for Ambrai Restaurant, one of the best fine-dining restaurants in Udaipur. It’s where you can have delicious food with an amazing view of Lake Pichola.

If you don’t mind splurging and are looking for sheer luxury, your options are – Taj Fateh Prakash Palace , Shiv Niwas Palace Hotel , The Leela Palace , The Oberoi Udaivilas , and the Taj Lake Palace Hotel . If you ask me to suggest to you the best among all, floating right in the center of Lake Pichola, the Taj Lake Palace Hotel is a class apart. Exquisite is the word!

What and Where to Eat and Drink in Udaipur

Like most of the cities in Rajasthan, Udaipur is a great place to try Rajasthani specialties like Laal Maas, Gatte ki Sabzi, Dal Bati Churma, Ker Sangri, Chakki ki Sabzi, Ghevar, Mirchi Bada, Pyaaj Kachori, Samosa, and Chaat.

Udaipur’s charm lies in rooftop lake-view restaurants and cafes. More than food, what matters here is the view you get.

From Sheesh Mahal , Upré , Ambrai , Tribute , Khamma Ghani , Charcoal by Carlsson , Jagat Niwas Palace , Restaurant Harigarh , Chandani by the Oberoi Udaivilas , Jharokha by Lake Palace Hotel , Paantya by Shiv Niwas Palace , and TWG by Hemang are quite a few amazing fine dining restaurants that offer food with a view.

All of these restaurants (except TWG Hemang which primarily serves international cuisine) offer International as well as Rajasthani cuisine.

Jheel’s Ginger Coffee Bar & Bakery , a cafe perched over Lake Pichola is where you can enjoy some free time with a cup of coffee or chocolate shake.

If you’ve got enough of the views (which is unlikely), you can head to the restaurants that might not offer you the iconic views but are celebrated for various other reasons.

A charming old-world colonial house restored into a restaurant, in 1559 AD , a bistro lounge restaurant, and Royal Repast , a specialty restaurant are great places to dine out. Both these restaurants are highly appreciated for their warm staff, speedy service, and vintage ambiance.

For travelers who want to enjoy a traditional Rajasthani thali – Garden Restaurant , Natraj Dining Hall and Restaurant , Krishna Dal Bati Restro , Padam Thal , Navidya By Amantra Hotels , and Udaipuri .

We also liked Udai Art Café , Brew Villa , Yummy Yoga , and Cafe La Comida . Located right in the heart of the old city, both cafes serve great coffee and snacks.

If you are a health aficionado, Millets of Mewar is for you! The first-ever dedicated health-food restaurant in Udaipur, Millets of Mewar uses locally sourced and organic ingredients. They very well know how to make healthy eating fun and creative. Its menu also includes vegan and gluten-free options.

There are tons of places in Udaipur, each with its unique charm. First off, the City Palace is a must-see. This colossal structure is steeped in history and grandeur.

Then there’s Lake Pichola. A boat ride there during the golden hours of sunset is just spellbinding.

Don’t miss the Jagdish Temple. Its intricate carvings and serene atmosphere are utterly captivating.

Next up, you can reach Karni Mata Temple by a hearty trek or a swift ropeway ride – the choice is yours, but the breathtaking views are a given either way.

The gardens of Saheliyon-ki-Bari are perfect for a leisurely and peaceful walk.

The Monsoon Palace is your ticket to the best sunset view in town – the city lights up like a jewel.

And if you’re chasing art and culture, the Bhartiya Lok Kala Museum showcases the best local crafts.

And there’s more than just the mainstream attractions.

Find solace at the calm Ambrai Ghat or the tranquil Badi Lake. Pay respects at the Ahar Cenotaphs and soak in the beauty of Fateh Sagar Lake.

And there’s the Neemach Mata Temple – it’s not as crowded and the climb is pretty refreshing. Plus, the view? It’s like you’re watching over Udaipur.

Evenings in Udaipur are for Bagore Ki Haveli. The Dharohar dance show is epic – the dances, the music, the vibe – it’s all real Rajasthan.

And, of course, shopping in Udaipur is an experience in itself. The markets such as Bapu Bazaar, Ghanta Ghar, Hathipol, Malda’s Street, and more are alive with colors, crafts, and endless rows of shops waiting to be discovered.

Let’s not forget Maharana Pratap Samarak. It’s a tribute to a local hero, Maharana Pratap, and you can feel the pride in the air. It’s this outdoor space with a big statue of him and his loyal horse, Chetak, which is pretty awesome to see.

And you must find out some time to visit the Shilpgram Museum, a living arts village that celebrates the traditional crafts and lifestyle of the local folk. A little out of the city, it’s is like a portal into the heart of Rajasthani village life and of course, the best place to immerse in the local culture.

Last but not the least, you can’t miss a trip to Chittorgarh Fort, one of the largest forts in India, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Standing proud a little way from Udaipur, it’s where the dramatic history of Rajasthan unfolds.

With more time, you can take a few eventful day trips from Udaipur. Just a short drive from the heart of Udaipur, you’ll find Eklingji, an ancient Hindu temple complex that’s a sanctuary of peace and spiritual energy.

A little further, there’s a cozy little town of Nathdwara famous for its temple of Shrinathji. It’s all about timing your visit to catch the temple ceremonies, which is quite the experience with all the singing and hustle.

Haldighati is another important spot near Udaipur. It’s where the iconic battle involving Maharana Pratap took place, and you can almost hear the clash of swords. Nearby, the Maharana Pratap Museum adds layers to the story, offering insights and artifacts that bring the historical saga to life.

And you can’t miss Kumbhalgarh Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s this massive fort with a wall you can see for miles. People say it’s like India’s version of the Great Wall of China. The view from up there are simply breathtaking.

From history at Ahar Cenotaphs to wildlife at Sajjangarh Biological Park, Udaipur promises a diverse experience.

18 Amazing Places to Visit in Udaipur in 2 Days

  • January 19, 2021

Planning 2 days in Udaipur and want to know all of the best places to visit? Great, because we have got you covered. In this guide, we bring to you what we consider to be the best places to visit in Udaipur in 2 days. We also include the best places to eat, where you should stay, and all of our top tips, so that you can spend less time planning and more time enjoying this magical city.

It is no secret that we fell in love with Udaipur, the White City of India .   The serenity of the lakes and the surrounding nature, had us forgetting that we were even in a city at all.   We adored the hippie boutiques and choice of amazing restaurants . And we loved how we didn’t feel the need to always be doing something.  In fact, to find a rooftop cafe overlooking Lake Pichola was one of our favourite ways to spend the day.

We ended up spending over a week in Udaipur, and I’d like to think we know the city pretty well.  We explored all of the top tourist attractions in Udaipur, and have narrowed them down to what we believe are the best places to visit in Udaipur in 2 days.  I have also made some additional suggestions in case you have 3 days in Udaipur or more.

Anyhow, there is a lot to cover in this 2 Day Udaipur Itinerary. So let’s get to it.

Continuing your travels in Rajasthan? See our Rajasthan Itinerary , as well as articles on The Golden Triangle , Jaipur , Pushkar, and Jaisalmer to help plan your trip.

*Before You Travel to Udaipur , have you got your travel insurance sorted?  Cover yourself for the unexpected, read  why you really need travel insurance , or  get a quote from World Nomads .

*Have you got your travel Visa sorted? Check if  you need one here  and retrieve a quote. It’s simple, fast and reliable.

Is 2 Days in Udaipur Enough?

The city of Udaipur is relatively small. Having said that, many of the top things to do in Udaipur are located outside of the city. While 2 days in Udaipur isn’t much time, by following this itinerary, you should find it enough to get acquainted with the city. You’ll certainly have enough time to cover the cities main attractions, even if it means jam-packed days.

As I mentioned earlier, we spent over a week in Udaipur; however, for most of that time, we didn’t do much at all. Thanks to its laidback vibe relative to other cities in Rajasthan, it was the ideal spot to take a little break and recharge the batteries. But, if you have limited time in India then 2 days in Udaipur is plenty.

Where to Stay with 2 Days in Udaipur

Naturally, there is no shortage of accommodation options in Udaipur, regardless of your budget or taste. Many visitors coming to Udaipur seek a lake facing hotel for the view, and with budget options available it’s worth looking into.

Most importantly, if you’re planning to spend just 2 days in Udaipur you’ll probably want to be centrally located. This way you can avoid journey time eating into your valuable sightseeing time. I’ll make some suggestions further down, or you can click the link to compare prices of all hotels, guesthouses, and hostels in the area.

Hostel $ – Gypsy Child Lake Hostel

One of only a few hostels in Udaipur, Gypsy Lake Child is the top choice thanks to its unrivalled location.  Overlooking incredible views of Lake Pichola and the surrounding mountains, guests can enjoy the sunset each evening from the rooftop. The staff go above and beyond to make you feel at home here, while facilities include comfortable rooms, air-conditioning, and private bathrooms.

Budget Private $ – Jagat Villa Guesthouse

We can personally recommend Jagat Villa Guesthouse, for affordable, clean & comfortable private rooms.   For under $8 a night we had a private room with air-conditioning and bathroom.   Located just a 5-minute walk from Pichola Lake, you have great restaurants and shopping opportunities right on your doorstep. Not to mention the owners, whose hospitality is second to none.

Mid-Range $$ – Hotel Lakend

If you fancy getting away from the hustle & bustle of central Udaipur, Hotel Lakend offers a wonderful alternative. Located on the Southern banks of Fateh Sagar Lake, guests can enjoy the serene location while at the same time, conveniently access all the cities top attractions. Luxury $$$ – Taj Lake Palace

For the ultimate Udaipur experience, a night at the   Taj Lake Palace is a once in a lifetime kind of stay. Situated on an island in the heart of Lake Pichola, the only way to describe this 18th-century palace is enchanting and majestic. 2 Day Itinerary for Udaipur

From admiring the lakeside views, exploring the cities architecture, and experiencing the white cities vibrant culture, here are all the best places to visit in Udaipur in 2 Days.  I have also taken the liberty of suggesting a 2 Day Itinerary, which I believe will help allow you to make the most of your time.

2 Days in Udaipur – Day 1

OK, assuming you spent the night in Udaipur, you’ll want to be out nice and early to make the most of your day. Grab breakfast at your hotel or at one of the restaurants we recommend in our vegetarian guide to Udaipur .

Udaipur Tours

With limited time in the city, it might make sense to discover Udaipur as part of an organised tour. You tend to fit in a lot more that way while removing all the stress of having to plan everything yourself. Click the link below for a full list of best-selling tours in Udaipur.

Udaipur City Palace

It isn’t without reason that the city palace is one of the top places to visit in Udaipur in 2 days.   The grandeur marble & granite structure stands proudly as the landmark of the city, and we for one were taken aback by its sheer magnificence .   If we were to recommend just one City Palace to visit in Rajasthan, it would have to be this one.

We happily paid the entrance fee to discover what lay beneath the towering walls.  And despite being touristic inside, we loved exploring the labyrinth of walkways, courtyards, gardens and hidden rooms.   We didn’t accept the offer of a guide but found the tour interesting and educational nevertheless. Everything is in English so it’s pretty much self-explanatory.  You’ll also find great vistas over the city and surrounding lakes.

If you’re at all interested in the history of Udaipur , a visit to the city palace is an essential addition to your 2 Day Udaipur itinerary. You can read more about it in our comprehensive guide to Udaipur City Palace .

Entrance Fee :   330 IDR/pax & English Speaking Guide:   400 IDR/group *optional

Jagdish Temple

The Hindu devoted Jagdish Temple is the most significant religious building in Udaipur.   The captivating 16th-century structure serves as a dedication to Lord Vishnu (preserver of the universe), one of the principal deities of Hinduism.

We are always blown away by the intricately carved Hindu temples, depicting the tales of ancient Hindu legends, and Jagdish was no different.   After admiring the architecture, we were permitted to go inside the temple, where Brahmins and devotees were conducting a spiritual ceremony.   Although we are not religious ourselves, such encounters in India are always an empowering experience.

Entrance Fee:  Free – donations as always are welcomed.

Ahar Cenotaphs

Ahar is essentially a Royal cemetery for Udaipur’s late Maharajas. However, what might sound like a dark place on paper is, in fact, a spot of peace and serenity. Furthermore, if you are at all interested in  Rajasthani architecture , you are sure to be left in awe by the intricately carved stone tombs.

Located around 2km outside of the city, Ahar could be considered somewhat of a hidden gem.   By that I mean you are unlikely to run into many other tourists when visiting here.   Having said that, be wary of the sketchy looking locals who may try to charge you 250 rupees to use your camera within the grounds.  This is a common scam and as of 2019, there are no official fees.

For more info, check out our guide to Ahar Cenotaphs here .

Entrance Fee:  Free.

Lake Pichola

There are almost 20 lakes in Udaipur, resulting in its nickname ‘ The City of Lakes’ .  Out of the five most significant lakes, most of them are artificial and one, in particular, is the second-largest artificial lake in Asia.

Lake Pichola is the most well-known lake in Udaipur, and a lot of the action goes on around it.  Boasting a jaw-dropping backdrop of the Aravalli mountain range, I’d freely say it’s one of the most picturesque and serene locations in all of India. A variety of lake-facing hotels , ghats, restaurants, and rooftop bars surround the lake, so you can enjoy the view from several different vantage points.

Our favourite time of day to appreciate Lake Pichola was around sunset.  After a long day of sightseeing, enjoying a cold beer over one of the best sunset spots in Udaipur is a perfect end to the day.  We list some of our favourite place to eat and drink further down in the article so be sure to check it out.

Insiders Tip:  Sunsets on the west side of the lake.  We took this shot from Sun N Moon rooftop!

Dinner at Namaste Cafe

Namaste Cafe is one of our favourite vegetarian restaurants in Udaipur , and the incredible ‘all you can eat’ Thali is our favourite thing on the menu.   You can choose from either a traditional or Rajasthani Thali – both are vegetarian & equally delicious.

If you are visiting in the evening, be sure to check out the rooftop.   Adorned in fairy lights and overlooking a wonderful view of the city and lake, you’re guaranteed a night, and meal, to remember.

2 Days in Udaipur – Day 2

Ok day 2, and it’s set to be another busy day. We will start the day with breakfast at our favourite cafe, and move on to see some of the best places to visit in Udaipur in 2 days. So let’s get to it.

Grasswood Cafe

Grasswood was our go-to cafe every morning for breakfast, and sometimes even lunch, dinner, & dessert too! We adored their healthy, vegan-friendly menu, including delicious smoothies, salads, sandwiches, and cakes.   The coffee is also the best we found in the city.

*Travellers Discount – As well as the tasty food we were impressed with the kind hospitality.   We became such regular customers that the owner, Ashish, began giving us a discount on our orders. What’s even more generous, is that he agreed to give the same discount to our followers too.   Just mention our blog if you visit and you will get a small discount on your order.

Monsoon Palace

When you arrive in Udaipur and spot the ethereal looking castle stood proudly in the hills; that my friends is the Monsoon Palace.  This is one of the places you must visit when spending 2 days in Udaipur.    The palace once served as a royal residence to the Mewar dynasty and located 944m above sea level provides incredible panoramic views over the city.    It is famed for being one of the best spots to watch the sunset in Udaipur . Although we visited in the morning so didn’t get to witness this for ourselves.

It is important to note, that whichever transport you take to the palace, you can only go as far as the entrance gate at the bottom of the hill.  From there, you have the option to pay for the palace jeep or walk to the palace. It was a beautiful morning, and we’d indulged in unlimited Thali the night before, so we figured we would walk. To reach the top takes around 1-hr walking at a moderate pace; however, you may need to stop for breaks as it’s an uphill road the entire way.

Personally, we enjoyed the challenge as well as the scenic views the route provided. Despite a few warnings of wildlife in the area, we encountered no bother. You should, however, be wary of the colony of langurs that occupy the palace grounds.  If you have food on show, they aren’t shy about snatching it from you. Check out our comprehensive guide to the Monsoon Palace here .

Entrance Fee:  300 Rs./pax + 100 Rs/pax for Jeep *optional

Fateh Sagar Lake

Another lake to add to your list of places to visit in Udaipur in 2 days is Fateh Sagar Lake.  In comparison to Lake Pichola, this lake is incredibly peaceful.     As a result, it is the perfect spot to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.

What we loved most about this lake, is the surrounding nature.   Not only do you have the staggering view of the mountains, but the perimeter of the lake is adorned with verdant gardens.   We recommend checking out Sunset Point Park and Maharana Pratap Samarak.

Karni Mata Temple

Karni Mata Temple is a relatively small temple complex positioned atop a hill in the city.  Although the temple itself is only small & modest, it is the astounding views from the peak that make this an essential addition to your 2 Day Udaipur Itinerary.

To reach the peak, you must either walk the stairs or take the cable car. Despite being nervous about cable cars (especially in India), we took it so we wouldn’t miss the sunset. It was perfectly fine and the views on the way up intensified the higher we climbed.

By the time we reached the top, the sun was starting to set, casting a glorious golden glow over the city.   Thankfully it wasn’t too crowded, so we managed to grab ourselves front row seats for one of the best sunsets we witnessed in India.

When visiting the Karni Mata Temple , please keep in mind that it is a place of worship. Even if you are only visiting for sunset, it’s important to act respectfully. Here are some things to consider.

  • Keep shoulders and legs below the knee covered at all times.
  • Remove your shoes before entering the temple.
  • There is a ‘no photography’ policy in most temples; however, you could ask the priest for permission.

Entrance Fee: Free.  Cable Car – 100 Rs/pax return.

Bagore Ki Haveli Night Show

For a taste of true Rajasthani culture, the evening performance at Bagore Ki Haveli is something you cannot miss when spending 2 days in Udaipur    Set in the courtyard of a magnificent haveli, the show incorporates traditional folk dance and local talent.

We were not too sure what to expect when we arrived at the show.   (Late may I add, and there was no discount for having to stand at the back). However, without giving too much away, we found ourselves transfixed by the dancers and musicians.   This was, without a doubt, one of our favourite things to do in Udaipur.

Entrance Fee:  150 Rs/pax + additional 150 Rs to use a camera including phones (You didn’t hear this from us but If you are careful you can get away with not paying the camera charge).

Places to Visit in Udaipur in 3 Days

If you plan to spend more than 2 days in the city, here are some other suggestions for places you can visit in Udaipur in 3 days or more.

If you’re not already ‘laked-out’ , Lake Badi is another beautiful lake worth visiting in Udaipur.  It’s even more peaceful than Fateh Sagar Lake, but with the same breath-taking views.  We rented a bicycle in central Udaipur to explore the lake, and it was a really pleasant experience.  To view the lake from above you can climb to a viewpoint on Bahubali Hill .

Neemach Mata Temple

We were told about this temple on our last day in Udaipur and having visited all the other sunset spots, we decided to check it out. A tuk-tuk dropped us at the foot of the hill, and we had to climb a steep set of stairs to reach the top. There are rumours that they will install a cable car soon; however, I figure this is quite a long way off. Either way, unless you’re afraid of a short workout, the stairs are perfectly fine.

Having heard very little about Neemach Mata Temple, we didn’t have too high of expectations for the view. Therefore, we were pleasantly surprised by the spectacular panoramic vistas that welcomed us at the top. Here you can enjoy views of the city, its various lakes, and surrounding mountain landscapes, so if you find yourself at a loose end one evening, it’s definitely a sunset spot worth checking out.

Neemach Mata Temple

Traditional Yoga Class

While India is the home of yoga, the spiritual energy in Udaipur makes it the perfect environment to practice.     For a traditional yet challenging yoga class, we highly recommend Prakash Yoga .   Prakash is an incredible teacher and will help you to achieve postures you possibly have never done before.  This may not be a class for somebody who’s never done yoga before, but if you are a regular at yoga, definitely check it out.

Price: Prakash relies on a donation only as payment; however, be sure to pay what you think is fair for the class .

2 Day Udaipur Itinerary

Creativity can be found in abundance in Udaipur and taking part in an art class is a unique way to spend your time in the city.

Located within Hotel Gangaur Palace, the Ashoka Arts class comes highly recommended.   Using natural paints and silk material, the teacher will guide you to complete a traditional Rajasthani painting.

Price : 400 Rs. per class

Sunset Boat Cruise

One of the most romantic experiences you can have when spending 2 or 3 Days in Udaipur is to take a sunset boat cruise on Lake Pichola. Not only can you experience the sensational views, but it may be your only opportunity to catch a close-up glimpse of the luxury Taj Lake Palace.   Unfortunately, we missed out on our sunset boat cruise after getting sick; however, it’s at the top of our list for when we return.

Price:   While there are several ghats in Udaipur where you can catch the boat, for the best price, we were advised to catch the boat from Lal Ghat.   From there, a shared boat is around 300 rs/pax while a private boat is approx. 1500 rs.

Taj Lake Palace Hotel

Now, this, of course, highly depends on your budget;   however, spending a night or 2 at the Taj Palace hotel is the ultimate Udaipur experience.   The 17th century, marble structure once served as a palace for the Mewar Dynasty.   It was later converted into a luxury hotel in the 1960s.

The majestic palace sits seemingly floating in the middle of Lake Pichola, alluring you with its beauty & elegance.   Our experience at the Taj Palace hotel was like no other… Who am I kidding?   Our backpacker budget would never stretch to this.   Maybe one day.

Insiders Tip : There are several other lake facing hotels in Udaipur that won’t break the bank.

Movie Nights

A fun fact about Udaipur is that many Bollywood and Hollywood movies have been filmed there.  The one you are most likely to be familiar with is James Bond ‘Octopussy’ and the city is clearly very proud of its Hollywood legacy.

S pecial showings of ‘Octopussy’ can be seen, every day might I add, at a number of rooftop bars and restaurants.   We aren’t Bond fans so we didn’t catch a viewing but I can imagine it would be pretty cool if you were!

Shopping & Markets

Shopping is without a doubt one of the most popular things to do in Udaipur.   Adorned with cute shops and alluring boutiques, the city is oozing with temptation.   Udaipur is also famed for its excellent tailoring stores, so if you’re looking for a sharp suit or similar, this is the place to get it.

Places to Visit in Udaipur in 1 Day

While we wouldn’t recommend spending only one-day in Udaipur, if it’s necessary it can be done.  You’ll just need to start as early as sunrise and come home after sunset, so it will be a long day but you’ll get to cover most of the highlights. This is my recommended places to visit in Udaipur in 1 Day.

  • Sunrise: Karni Mata Temple
  • Morning: Monsoon Palace
  • Late Morning: Fateh Sagar Lake Gardens
  • Lunch: Lunch in the City Overlooking Lake Pichola
  • Afternoon:  Ahar Cenotaphs
  • Sunset:  Sunset Dinner at Namaste Cafe
  • Evening :  Bagore Ki Haveli Show

The Best Bars & Restaurants in Udaipur

With so many places to visit in Udaipur in 2 days, you can expect to leave your hotel before sunrise and return after sunset.  To avoid burning out, it pays to eat well and keep hydrated! At the same time, food is a huge part of the Udaipur experience, so check out our favourite restaurants & rooftop bars for the best food and drink in the city.

  • Grasswood Cafe: Best For Healthy Breakfast
  • Namaste Cafe:  Best For Local Food
  • Millets of Mewar:  Best For Vegan Food
  • Jheels Coffee Bar & Bakery: Best For Western Food
  • Sun & Moon: Best For Sunset Drinks

Tips for Sightseeing in Udaipur

Here are some useful tips that I hope will enhance your travel experience in Udaipur.

Best Time to Visit Udaipur

The best time to visit Udaipur is during the India Winter which runs from October to February.  During this time you can expect perfect sightseeing weather – Ie. temperatures are cooler and there is very little rain.   If you are sensitive to the heat, you may wish to keep mornings and late afternoons free for sightseeing, as lunchtime gets hot all year round.   It’s recommended to avoid Udaipur during the months of Summer or Monsoon.

How to Get to Udaipur

AIR:  Udaipur Airport is located around 20KM from the city centre.   Daily domestic flights are available from most major airports throughout the country.

TRAIN:  Udaipur is well connected via train from most major destinations throughout the country; however, booking trains in India can be tricky.   It is advised to book at least 3 days in advance and even then you aren’t always guaranteed a ticket.  For this reason, we always used the bus network in India. You can book trains up to 6 months in advance using 12go Asia.

BUS:  Udaipur is accessible by bus from a number of destinations across India.   To check routes, timetables and ticket prices we recommend using redbus.com .   In our experience, they are extremely reliable.   They are one of the few companies who will accept payment with an International card, and they are contactable by phone should you have any issues with your journey.

Getting Around Udaipur

If you are spending just 2 days in Udaipur, the easiest and cheapest way to get around is by scooter .   The cost to rent a scooter is around 500 rs. for 24hrs; however, be aware that the Udaipur traffic can be intimidating if you’re not experienced.    You will need to have an International Drivers License should you be pulled over by police, and always wear a helmet!

Another option is to get around using taxis or tuk-tuks.   This can be cost-effective if you are in a group, but be sure to haggle as the drivers are opportunists when it comes to tourists.

Finally, OLA TAXIS operate in the city.   Ola is an app similar to Uber and we found the service extremely reliable.   As well as single journeys, you have the option to hire a car for half of the day or even a full day, and it’s almost always cheaper than a tuk-tuk.

Places to Visit in Udaipur in 2 Days

Parties in Udaipur

While there isn’t much going on in terms of parties in Udaipur, there are a select few bars which serve alcohol.  Our personal favourite was Sun & Moon where we would enjoy a few quiet beers while the sunset.  They also seemed pretty relaxed about people smoking weed in there too.

While we do not condone taking drugs, if you are looking to get high, you can guarantee you will be approached by numerous tuk-tuk drivers in Udaipur looking to sell.

Social Etiquette in Udaipur

Rajasthan is one of the holiest and most socially conservative states in all of India. It’s important to keep in mind that what might be socially acceptable in your home country, is likely to be viewed entirely different here. Thankfully, most Indians are forgiving toward foreigners to a certain extent; however, to avoid unwanted attention and embarrassment, it’s good to know the dos and don’ts. In which case, I recommend this article regarding  social etiquette in India , which includes dress codes, table manners, temple etiquette etc.

At the same time, you’ll likely be surprised by some of the aspects of Indian culture. And in all honestly, you’ll probably be offended from time to time. But again, it’s important to remember that the culture is entirely different from the western world, and embracing the unique Indian culture is all part and parcel of the experience.

Be Aware of Scams

It pays to make yourself aware of the  common scams in India , so in turn, you can avoid them. There are also known to be skilled pickpockets operating in Jaipur so be sure to keep your valuables secured at all time. We use either a small padlock or compartmental bag to keep our valuables safe.

We recommend educating yourself on  Travel Safety in India  to help you avoid any sticky situations.

Recommended Apps to Download for Udaipur

  • Maps.Me : For offline maps – Just be sure you download the relevant map in a WiFi zone.
  • Google Translate Offline :  In tricky language barrier situations, this could be your saving grace.
  • OLA Taxi App : Because they are cheaper than most local taxis or tuk-tuks.

Thank you for the compliment!

Thanks For Writing Such a nice Blog.

Glad you enjoyed it, thank you!

Hi You wouldn’t include the City Palace in the one-day itinerary? I’m going to stop at Monsoon Palace on the way down from Jodhpur so do you think I’d have time to swap in the Citp Palace instead on your 1 day itinerary?

Hi Petal, yes absolutely swap it if that’s your preference. Hope you have a great time!

Amazing resource and stunning photos – thank you!

Hi Patricia, so glad you enjoyed the article!

Visiting Udaipur at the end of March and with so much to read, consider and plan – your information has been so incredibly helpful – we’ve made so many notes…thank you.

I hope you don’t mind a question or two – we need a car/driver to get us from Udaipur to Shahpura Bagh. Would you be able to recommend a driver/company ?

Would we be crazy to try to visit Chittorgarh Fort on the way from Udaipur to Shahpura Bagh ? We would probably only have about two hours to see it.

Kind regards, Colin & Johanna

Hi Colin, I’m so happy to read this article has been helpful for you. I’m late getting back to you so hope you got sorted with the car rental. I’d be interested to know if you made it to Chittorgah Fort? All the best!

About Udaipur

One of the most prominent cities of Rajasthan, Udaipur stands as an icon of art, architecture, and rich history. A fine blend of royalty, old-world charm, and modern lifestyle, its heritage has made Udaipur attractive to travellers of all kinds, from within the country and abroad.

The city’s legacy reflects in its ancient monuments , in its people and their culture, food, art, and their aesthetics .

The city of Udaipur has a legacy of over 1000 years . It was founded by Maharana Udai Singh II, in 1559 , after whom the city was named. It was in the fertile Girwa Valley by the Banas River, where the Rajput king set up the new capital of the Mewar kingdom.

When Akbar conquered Chittor in 1567 , Udai Singh built seven gates to wall the city from invaders. These walls still exist and the area within these walls are called the “old city”. Nearly a century later, the then king, Rana Amar Singh, agreed to become a Mughal vassal and retained Udaipur as the capital of the state.

By 1818 it became a princely state of British India. Presently, Maharana   Mahendra Singh Mewar  is the 76th custodian of the Mewar dynasty.
