OVERFLOWING STREAMS: AT THE GATES, BEFORE THE DAWN, WOMBBATH, FRACTAL UNIVERSE, SEEMING EMPTINESS, IMPURE WILHELMINA, HESPER PAYNE, CULTES DES GHOULES, GRAVE MIASMA, VILDHJARTA, PERTURBATOR, MAGGOT CROWN

vildhjarta tour 2023

It’s been a long time since I resorted to this Overflowing Streams format for spreading the word about new music I’ve enjoyed, but last week seemed more even more insane than usual — just a ton of new tracks were revealed by old gods, new gods, and assorted minor demons. As bloated as the following collection may seem, it’s still far from complete — I’ll include a few more in tomorrow’s SHADES OF BLACK column.

Without further ado, here we go with lots of sights sounds and not many words, though I do encourage you to add your own in the Comments.

AT THE GATES

Speaking of old gods, I might have included the news about Darkthrone album No. 19 ( Eternal Hails ), but there’s no music yet, so I’ll wait. You can peep the cover art here . But among the old gods, At the Gates did give us a new song, and I had to lead with it. Continue reading »

SHORT BUT SWEET: VILDHJARTA — “THOUSANDS OF EVILS”

vildhjarta tour 2023

Now that that’s out of the way…

It’s a shame I’m only just now reviewing this.  Vildhjarta are easily one of the most important bands in the whole djent/prog-groove scene.   Måsstaden was a masterpiece in the way it interwove djent, deathcore, and doom into a cohesive atomic sonic clusterfuck of sainthood.  This EP, Thousands of Evils , sees a band already known for strange sounds and strange ideas experimenting even more.   It’s cool, if for nothing else, that this is a band who are unafraid to put their mere fucking around out there and see how it’s received.  The results are, as one would expect from these guys, dimension-opening.

All of the elements that made the band are still here: The relentless dual vocal assault, the guitar tone that sounds like a nuclear fallout, and of course Daniel Bergstrom’s brand of “how in the fucking fuck did he make that noise with a guitar?” style of riffing.  What is impressive about Thousands of Evils  is how balls to the wall it is, and how little of a fuck it gives for cohesion.  Instead, it aims to achieve simply the most extreme reaches of whatever parts of the spectrum they hit.  The heavy parts are gargantuan in stature, the clean ambient moments soul-cleansing. SEEN AND HEARD: ULCERATE AND CARCASS STREAMS, SLAYER-GOJIRA-4ARM TOUR UPDATE, A NEW VEIL OF MAYA TOUR WITH VILDHJARTA, A NEW SONG BY HAIL OF BULLETS, AND ALBUM NEWS FOR GIFT OF GODS AND SARKE

vildhjarta tour 2023

Painstakingly selected from among the detritus that litters the interhole and the NCS in-box, here are items of interest that appeared over the last 24 hours.

If you need more darkness in your life — and who doesn’t? — then you should listen to Vermis , the new death metal monstrosity by New Zealand’s Ulcerate . The album won’t be released in North America until September 17 (a day earlier in the UK and September 13 in certain European countries), but yesterday Metal Sucks began hosting an exclusive stream of the album. Ulcerate are one of those rare death metal bands who are pushing (or dragging) the genre in new directions. The music of Vermis is harrowing and inhuman, but it exerts a powerful attraction. You should hear it.

THIS is the link for the stream.

The new Carcass album, which we reviewed here , is due for release on September 16. I have a feeling that anyone interested in hearing the new Carcass album has already heard it, but just in case, it’s now streaming in full, too. Nuclear Blast has uploaded the entire album to YouTube. Obviously, it’s one of the biggest releases of 2013, and it also happens to be a fine album. You can hear it next.   (thanks Daniel for the tip) Continue reading »

NEW THALL: VILDHJARTA — “DIMMAN”

vildhjarta tour 2023

Way back in April we reported that Sweden’s Vildhjarta were almost finished with their new concept EP, Thousands of Evils , which will be released by Century Media. They had already unveiled the wonderful cover art and had previously released three teasers on YouTube with snippets of the new music (which can be heard here ), and at that point bootleg videos had begun to surface with entire songs from the new EP performed live at the Thallium Festival in Minsk, Belarus. Now, at last, a new studio track from the EP by the name of “Dimman” has made its appearance.

It comes on a Sunday, without warning or fanfare, and I’m guessing it’s a leak. Hell, I’m not 100% positive it’s the entire track. But hey, I listened to it anyway.

“Dimman” is instrumental-only. It descends with an extended acoustic/synth intro that’s both snappy and spacey (and of course there’s a burly bass line booming away, too). Electric guitar joins in for a few healthy measures, and then the thall begins. My colon is still reverberating, even from only a minute and a half of it. Listen next if you’re interested in seeing what Vildhjarta have gotten up to, but listen fast because I doubt “Dimman” will be on YouTube long. Continue reading »

NEW THALL: VILDHJARTA LIVE

vildhjarta tour 2023

Sweden’s Vildhjarta are almost finished with their new concept EP, Thousands of Evils , which will be released by Century Media. They’ve previously unveiled the cover art, which as you can see is stunning. They’ve also previously released three teasers on YouTube with snippets of the new music (which can be heard here ).  But now, bootleg videos have surfaced with entire songs from the new EP.

The performances were filmed at the Thallium Festival in Minsk, Belarus, on April 23, 2013. So far, I’ve seen three videos. The first two have very good picture quality, though the sound could use more bass pick-up . . . because it’s fuckin’ Vildhjarta, and you need to feel all that thall reverberating deep down in your colon. The third one includes one of the songs from the first video, but shot by a different fan from a different angle and with a bit more low-end oomph in the sound.

I don’t yet have a release date for the EP — apparently the band are still tweaking things, as they’ve been doing for many months. But based on what I’m hearing in these videos, the music sounds like a worthy follow-up to the band’s ridiculously successful debut album  Måsstaden . Check out this new shit after the jump.

Thall. Continue reading »

SEEN AND HEARD: DYING FETUS, GOD SEED, VILDHJARTA, PIG DESTROYER ON PIANO, AND A BAND OF ORCS

vildhjarta tour 2023

Yours truly is on the road again, and by “road” I mean in airports and on airplanes and therefore spending hours of tedium separated from the internet. As a result, the postings between now and Monday are going to be scattered and probably fewer than normal. I did have time last night and this morning to survey what’s been happening over the last 24 hours and found the following nuggets of interest.

ITEM ONE: DYING FETUS, ET AL – “THE BLOOD OF POWER TOUR”

I started posting about this tour when there was no official announcement and just a few dates had surfaced, because I was so fuckin’ excited about it. Yesterday it became official. I saw on Metal Sucks (which is co-sponsoring the tour) that  Dying Fetus , Cattle Decapitation , and Cerebral Bore will indeed be touring the U.S. in November and December.

But this official announcement has revealed something I didn’t know: Malignancy will be taking the place of Cattle Decapitation during the last week of the tour. The two bands are very different, of course, but they’re both just excellent at what they do. If you want a taste of Malignancy’s forthcoming album (which is amazing), check out this post . Tour dates are right after the jump. Continue reading »

CATCHING UP (Part 2): MISERATION, WRECK AND REFERENCE, CATTLE DECAPITATION, FEAR FACTORY, AND VILDHJARTA

vildhjarta tour 2023

As explained yesterday, I’ve been kind of off my game here at NCS recently and I’m now trying (hurriedly) to make up for lost time. While investigating the many things I’ve missed in the world of metal over the last week or two, I’ve found a shitload of things I think are worth sharing — both news items and new music. I’m collecting some (but not all) of them in this “Catching Up” mini-series. Here’s Part 2, and there will be one more installment coming.

This is a news item, which is the most recent part of this post.  This morning, Sweden’s Miseration revealed the cover art (above) for their next album (on Lifeforce Records ), Tragedy Has Spoken . The artwork is by the ubiquitous and dependably awesome Pär Olofsson . I thoroughly enjoyed this band’s ass-blasting last album, The Mirroring Shadow (2009), and have high hopes for the new one. Conceptually, it’s described as an exploration of the nature of tragedy, both man-made and the result of natural disasters.

The new album was also recorded with 8-string guitars and get this: According to Lifeforce , it also incorporates “folk instruments such as the Indian harp Esraj, the Persian hammered dulcimer Santur, sawblade, organ, mandolin and piano, as well as Mongolian throatsinging”!!! I think we have many “what the fuck?” moments in store for us. Continue reading »

TWO SIDES OF THE SHRED COIN: JEFF LOOMIS AND DANIEL BERGSTRÖM (VILDHJARTA)

vildhjarta tour 2023

Your humble editor’s fucking day job has stripped away almost all free time over the last 24 hours, and will continue to strip, strip, strip throughout today, and it’s not sexy. What that means is that my own poor contributions to NCS today will be skimpy. In fact, this is probably the only post I can contribute.

This will be greeted with applause in some quarters. But I’m sure that in many more quarters — many, many more — it will be greeted with weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth and rending of clothes. Also, please send quarters so I can quit my fucking day job.

Yesterday, I saw two new videos featuring the music of two very different guitarists — from two different generations and two very different styles of shredding. The first is an “album sampler” of music from the new album by ex- Nevermore member and all-around widely worshipped guitar wizard, Jeff Loomis . The second is a guitar play-through by Vildhjarta’s Daniel Bergström , who is himself a Grand High Wizard in the Exalted Order of Thall.

JEFF LOOMIS

On April 10, Century Media will release the new solo album by Jeff Loomis, titled Plains of Oblivion . To enhance the Seattle connection (and another reason why we’re paying so much attention to this album), it was produced by Aaron Smith of 7 Horns 7 Eyes , who themselves have a new album on the way. The album includes an array of tantalizing guest appearances.

Ex- Megadeth members Marty Friedman and Chris Poland make appearances with guest solo’s. Christine Rhoades , who provided guest vocals on the Nevermore track “Dreaming Neon Black”, does a vocal turn on  song called “Tragedy and Harmony”. Hungarian guitarist Attila Voros is in the mix, too, as is guitarist Tony MacAlpine . And last, but most certainly not least, Ihsahn contributes to a song called “Surrender”. Continue reading »

UNEVEN STRUCTURE AND VILDHJARTA: “FEBRUUS” AND “MÅSSTADEN”

( TheMadIsraeli is on a mission to review or re-review the 2011 albums that were his favorites.)

Alright.  Time for me to return to reviewing or revisiting my top 15 albums of 2011, which I previously listed on this site.  These won’t be as long as my normal reviews (generally half as long), so unless an album requires a longer piece, I’ll be doing these two at a time.  Today’s subjects are the yin and yang, the chaos and order, the good and evil of THALL .

Uneven Structure and Vildhjarta .  Februus  and Måsstaden . First:

vildhjarta tour 2023

“So, I’m not going to dance around the verdict on this album: This thing is the shit.  Listening is like achieving enlightenment through sound, an aural ascension into nirvana, the equivalent of finding true inner peace through heavy-as-fuck, syncopated, gain-soaked djent riffs drenched in waterfalls of absolutely gorgeous ambience with an odd oriental color.” Continue reading »

OUR LIST OF 2011’S MOST INFECTIOUS EXTREME METAL SONGS: PART 15

vildhjarta tour 2023

This is Part 15 of our list of the most infectious extreme metal songs released this year. Each day until the list is finished, I’m posting two songs that made the cut. For more details about what this list is all about and how it was compiled, read the Introduction via  this link . To see the selections that preceded this one, click the Category link on the right side of the page called  MOST INFECTIOUS SONGS-2011 .

This list has included quite a lot of variety so far, which in part is a reflection of the diversity of my own tastes and in part a reflection of the tremendous variety available in metal today. But there’s one sub-genre that hasn’t yet made an appearance. I hate to even use the word, because it’s already getting a bad name in some quarters, due to the saturation of the style by a flood of bands and bedroom projects who seem to believe that atonal Meshuggah-style riffing played with a bit of technical flash is all that’s needed to create a “song”.

I suppose we should have seen that coming, since the label for the sub-genre originated as nothing more than a name for the representative sound or tone made by an appropriately down-tuned guitar. But of course, much more is needed than start-stop pneumatic riffing and polyrhythmic complexity to create something memorable — and infectiousness is what this list is all about. The two songs I’m adding to the list today have got that quality.

TheMadIsraeli reviewed this band’s wonderful 2011 album Dualism here , and followed that with an interview here . Like him, I’ve been a Textures fan for a long time — they have yet to disappoint me. Back before that “djent” label went viral, I thought of Textures as a “math metal” band, but even that label was too restrictive. They’ve always had a talent for constructing songs that were not only rhythmically complex and physically jolting, but memorably melodic. Continue reading »

ALBUM REVIEW: Måsstaden Under Vatten – Vildhjarta

VILDHJARTA don’t so much write music as create cosmic rifts through time and space itself. It has been too long since we have heard from them and for a long time the only hope as a resurgence was the odd cryptic Facebook post or sporadic, tantalising teasers. And yet a whole decade since the release of their last full length – the seminal Måsstaden – they are back, armed to the teeth with the kind of heavy ammunition we have grown to love and expect from them. Cue flashbacks to their stunning records of old and their emphatic performance at UK Tech-Fest in 2019 – spine tingling reminders of just how much we’ve missed this band.

Upon hearing the news of new music from the legendary Swedes however, initial excitement could be forgiven for quickly turning into a modicum of worry. There is a real sense of legacy to live up to, what if it doesn’t succumb to expectation? Rest assured that any doubts need not persist. Måsstaden Under Vatten captures VILDHJARTA at their explosive best. It is an eighty minute exercise in supernatural djent, deployed with a level of precision that can only be compared to genre greats such as TOOL and MASTODON . Here is a band that epitomises the meaning of ‘diamond in the rough’, quietly redefining what it means to be a heavy band, and orchestrating the future flow of a whole genre.

Across a lengthy span of seventeen tracks, VILDHJARTA deploy a devastating array of riffs and groove, shifting from crucifying heaviness to thick-set atmospherics in the blink of an eye. From the outset, Lavender Haze begins to defy logic in what must be the biggest middle finger to physics since an apple fell on Newton’s head. It is a sucker punch of frenetic metal which flies out of the traps with unprecedented power and finesse. Maybe we’ve just forgotten how impactive those downtuned riffs can be, but here they’re painted on like thick tar; all encompassing and long lasting.

And so the tone of the album is set. När De Du Älskar Kommer Tillbaka Från De Döda introduces vocals to the equation, again offering profound depth and sounding abundantly heavy. As the two released singles, Kaos2 and Toxin give us more of the same before Brännmärkt wades in with towering levels of groove. As pioneers of the Thall movement (essentially djent with atmosphere so thick you can consume it with a spoon) VILDHJARTA have never been strangers to writing technical music, but here they reach a level of intricacy that even they haven’t scaled before. It could unfairly be criticized as just being chug worship, but the reality is that VILDHJARTA are wizards and this album is thoroughly enchanting.

A possible stand out is Måsstadens Nationalsång , which sees a delicate introduction burst into strobing riffs and dense ambience. It’s X-Rated heaviness, and as synths pulse through the track like an organic beat, we are repeatedly stuck by cochlea shattering drums and an onslaught of guitar. Other highlights include Vagabond and Mitt Trötta Hjarta but to save from any further spoiler alerts, the general consensus remains the same; VILDHJARTA are very, very good.

The band will still remain as an enigma to some. As an entity they aren’t particularly communicative. They tend to let their music do the talking, and some of the members are perhaps better known for the more prominent project HUMANITY’S LAST BREATH . But they hardly need to be marketing extraordinaires. VILDHJARTA is an outlet for relentless creativity and the kind of bonkers musicianship that would scarcely make sense anywhere else. They have created another album that embodies their philosophies, their willingness to experiment and take music to places it has never been before. With surprises and ideas at every turn, it will shock and impress. We should all be excited that this band is back with what is a landmark release and an eye-opening experience. Let’s just hope it isn’t another ten years before the next one!

Rating: 9/10

2024 Masters Tournament odds, picks, Fantasy golf power rankings: PGA Tour predictions and best bets for this week's major from golf expert

Hero Image

The highlight of the golf season every year takes place in April as the Masters Tournament is among the most anticipated sporting events on the calendar. The motto "a tradition unlike any other" coined by CBS' Jim Nantz most certainly rings true for this event. A total of 88 players (plus a potential addition from the Valero Texas Open) will compete for a purse of $18 million, with the winner receiving $3.24 million, a famous green jacket, major exemptions, and a spot in The Masters for life. Augusta National plays as a par-72 at 7,555 yards with tree-lined fairways, uneven lies, and lightening fast greens.

World No. 1 and 2022 champion Scottie Scheffler is the pre-tournament favorite at +400 odds, followed defending champion Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy (+1200), Xander Schauffele (+1800), with Jordan Spieth and Brooks Koepka at +2000.

With the best field in golf teeing it up for 2024's first major tournament, who can you trust for your Masters Fantasy golf picks? Before you set your 2024 Masters golf lineups or make any PGA Tour bets, you NEED to see the Fantasy golf rankings from Fantasy expert Eric Cohen .

Cohen is an avid golf bettor who correctly predicted the pre-tournament outright winner of the 2024 Players Championship (Scottie Scheffler +550), 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic (Rickie Fowler +1400), 2023 PGA Championship (Brooks Koepka +2000), 2023 Honda Classic (Chris Kirk +3500), 2022 Open Championship (Cameron Smith +2200), 2022 U.S. Open (Matt Fitzpatrick +2500), and 2022 Phoenix Open (Scottie Scheffler's first career victory at +2800).

Eric is a contributor to SportsLine's YouTube shows including "Early Edge" and is the host of "The Early Wedge" golf show (live on Monday, 4/8 at 7:00 p.m. ET).  Anyone who has followed Cohen's predictions has made positive gains on their golf picks.

Now, Cohen has studied the field set to play at Augusta National and revealed his Masters Fantasy golf rankings.

We can tell you he is backing Xander Schauffele at +1800 as his top outright bet. "He has top ten finishes in six of eight events this season and has gained off the tee and on approach in all but one tournament. In six appearances here, he has finishes of T2 (to Tiger Woods in 2019), T3, and T10."

On the other hand, Cohen is fading the co-second favorite Rory McIlroy at +1200 outside the top five. "McIlroy has finished in the top ten in seven of his last eight majors, but can't get over the hump at Augusta after blowing a massive lead in 2011. Looking to complete the career grand slam, it's almost like watching Phil Mickelson for years at the U.S. Open. So close, yet so far away."

Cohen also is backing several underdogs in his 2024 Masters Fantasy golf picks, including a HUGE 125-1 longshot who thrives at Augusta National ! If this player can pull off a stunning result, it would bring a HUGE payoff and be a valuable piece for Masters Fantasy golf lineups. You ABSOLUTELY need to see who it is before locking in any fantasy golf picks.

Who wins The Masters Tournament ,  a nd which triple-digit longshot could bring a HUGE payout and be the difference for your Fantasy golf picks? Join SportsLine now to get Eric Cohen's Fantasy golf rankings and picks for The Masters, all from the Fantasy expert who has delivered a positive ROI with his golf picks !

It’s almost time to pull out your cowboy boots and fringed denim jackets. Stagecoach, the annual country music festival, returns to its home at the Empire Polo Club grounds in Indio, Calif. from Apr. 26-28. Weekend passes are sold out on the Stagecoach website but there are still affordable tickets available on resale sites such as Stubhub , Vividseats , SeatGeek and Ticketmaster .

Tickets on the official Stagecoach website ranged in price from $389 for advance general admission to $1,499 for the GA standing pit and $1,999 for prime reserved seating. However, on resale sites such as VividSeats , passes are going for as low as $350. The final price might end up being the same when accounting for additional taxes and fees, but it’s a good option if you’re looking to snag last-minute tickets. In fact, passes might continue to go down in price as we head closer to the weekend when demand is likely to tail off.

If you aren’t able to attend the festival in person, the Goldenvoice -produced event will also be live streamed on the official  Stagecoach YouTube channel  beginning at 3:30 p.m. PT/6:30 p.m. ET on Friday and throughout the weekend. The performances will also be streamed on SiriusXM from Apr. 29 through May 1.

Buy Stagecoach 2024 tickets on Stubhub.

Little Big Town and Sugarland Unite for 2024 CMT Awards Performance of 'Take Me Home' After Announcing Joint Tour

The 2024 CMT Music Awards are airing live from the Moody Center in Austin, Texas on Sunday, April 7 on CBS and Paramount+

It’s a CMT Awards reunion more than a decade in the making!

Little Big Town and Sugarland took the stage at the 2024 CMT Awards on Sunday for a stunning performance of Phil Collins' "Take Me Home," marking their first time on the show’s stage together since 2008.

Ahead of the award show, Little Big Town and Sugarland announced the Take Me Home Tour . The tour will kick off on Oct. 4 in Greenville, South Carolina, and conclude on Dec. 13 at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville.

At the Michael J. Fox Foundation’s  Country Thing Happened on the Way to Cure Parkinson's event  on April 2, Little Big Town's Kimberly Schlapman told PEOPLE that the performance was going to be "epic," with bandmate Phillip Sweet adding, "It was cool, getting back together and preparing for this moment."

Sweet also highlighted the "great energy" musically the duo has with the "Girl Crush" creators.

Little Big Town is comprised of Schlapman, Sweet, Karen Fairchild and Jimi Westbrook, while Sugarland is Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush. The groups — who, combined, have a staggering 44 CMT nominations — last played at the award show together in 2008, when they joined forces with Jake Owen to sing “Life in a Northern Town.”

Little Big Town hosted the CMTs in 2018 and 2019, and also hold the record for most nominations for group video of the year, with 25 nods. They put out their most recent album, Mr. Sun, in 2022.

Sugarland, meanwhile, last played the CMTs together in 2011. Their most recent album, Bigger, came out in 2018.

Nettles was honored in 2020 with the show’s inaugural CMT Equal Play Award , which recognized her for her passionate advocacy and support of women in the music industry, LGBTQ+ community and other underrepresented groups.

Megan Moroney , Parker McCollum ft. Brittney Spencer and host Kelsea Ballerini.
