Historic vladivostok, russia walking tour and top attractions.

Vladivostok Russia Train Terminus

As the terminus to the Trans-Siberian Railway and largest Russian port on the Pacific Ocean, Vladivostok is a popular destination. A historic Vladivostok walking tour is the best way to explore the city. As an Acupuncturist-at-Sea, I awaken surprised to what I see from the deck. The bright sun is sparkling upon the dramatic Golden Horn Bay. Then, I quickly notice the iconic Trans-Siberian Railway Station, just outside our ship’s terminal. With minimal preparation, I set off solo on foot to make the most of my 1 day in Vladivostok.

IMG_4127

History of Vladivostok

Vladivostok is the capital of the Primorye district, in a unique location where Russian, North Korean and Chinese borders converge. Vladivostok took many international stances from its strategic location. China owned Vladivostok until the Beijing Treaty. However, after the October Revolution, the Bolsheviks took control of this city making it the naval base for their Pacific fleet. During the Soviet Era (1958-92), Vladivostok closed off from tourism. But today, the vibe is more open with opportunities for foreigners to explore this fascinating city with a population of 605,000 people.

The Bay of the Zolotoy Rog or Golden Horn Bay is named after its resemblance to Istanbal’s harbor. The dramatic Russky Bridge is a cable-stayed, suspension bridge connecting the mainland to Russky Island. Also, its pylons’ height reaches 432-metres, making it one of the the largest bridges in the world. The historic Russky Island has 6 military forts and many batteries, amidst unique landscapes. The harbor is surrounded by beautiful hills, including a high point being Eagles Nest Hill at 214 meters. The hill is known for the views and white-tailed sea eagles there.

Vladivostok’s Maritime Influence

The maritime influence is omnipresent in this beautiful port, set on the peninsula called Muravyov-Amursky . There are impressive military ships lined up outside the Central Plaza, and in view from our ship, giving a posture of power and military prowess. The “Krasniy Vympel” is a sail-screw schooner, and patrol ship during WW I. It is open as a museum along the shore. Vladivostok is the eastern gate for international cruise lines and the starting point of ferry routes to Japan and Republic of Korea. Also, this city is the home port with 4 ice breakers, serving Russian and international arctic shipping lines. For example, the Kapitan Khlebnikov offers international tourist expeditions to Arctic and Antarctic regions.

Eastern Terminus for Great Siberian Railway

IMG_4136

Immediately, I happily discover the eastern terminus of the Trans-Siberian Railw ay station next to the cruise terminal. For years, I was intrigued and wanted to venture on this 7- day (9,288 km) epic train journey from Moscow to Vladivostok. I stay to watch trains come and go on the multiple tracks outside the station. Then I wander for a closer look at the iconic main station . It opened in 1912, with a façade and interior decorated by almost 1000 porcelain tiles. Even more, they ornately depict birds, animals, plants and typical of Russian folklore.

Vladivostok Walking Tour

IMG_4146

Next, I set off on my own walking tour, however, there are no English maps in the terminal. I follow the shoreline toward the massive military ships moored next to the golden, onion-domed Russian church in the near distance. There’s an upbeat vibe and I’m pleased to discover many European-style coffee shops on almost every block. Being Eurocentric from Seattle, this makes me feel at home and resonate with a culture.

Going toward the church, I find the conspicuous Central Plaza and signs leading to the Submarine Museum , which would be my next stop. There is a dramatic monument, entitled the Fighters for Soviet Power in the Far East. It’s dedicated to the bloodshed events from 1912-22, including the revolution, civil war and fighting with Japanese forces. (above photo) Additionally, the large open space of the Plaza is now used for celebrations and events, all facing the sea.

IMG_4191

From the plaza, I follow the signs to the Submarine Museum, which is the most visited museum in Vladivostok. Walking just 1 km on the Korabelno-Naberezhnaya Embankment , I go toward the massive moored military ships. Then, I notice the Submarine Museum set up on land amidst the Memorial Complex with Eternal Fire , honoring Russian soldiers who died in WW II.

Next, I find the neatly restored Arch of Triumph (above photo), perched humbly atop a small hill and stairs. This monument commemorates the heirs to the Tsar’s throne for Nicholas Alexandrovich. It became destroyed during the Soviet period and restored in 2003. Additionally, there are many statues throughout this park and a Christian church in the middle with its golden, onion-shaped Russian domes.

IMG_4163

Submarine S-56 Museum

20190422_122818

In the memorial complex , I visit the Submarine S-56 Museum , where visitors walk and crawl through the vessel used in the Russian Pacific Fleet during WW II. It launched 14 successful attacks against rival ships. After the first section of photos and memorabilia, I crawl through the round door hole to handle the periscope and imagine what it would have been like to live this subterranean existence. Then, I crawl through the last door hole into the sleeping room, seeing the hanging bunk beds. Overall, I feel grateful for this experience, as it’s intriguing to imagine the type of people that could handle this compressed, deep existence in the ocean.

Then, I cross the road looking for a visitor’s center next to the military ships. There’s a board with pictures and explanations (in Russian and English) of all the historical sites in Vladivostok. As I looked at this, a tour guide tries to sell me a tour. Even though I decline, she gives me a free English Walking Tour Map. Finally, I get my map. However, I was proud of myself for figuring this much out with no preparation or map.

IMG_4220

Car-free Promenade – Vladivostok Walking Tour

Following the map, I head for the Walking Street , that goes to the sea along a promenade. On the way to this car-free zone, I try one of the ubiquitous coffee shops and enjoy a nice latte and chocolate. Walking along the streets are numerous vendors with booths selling their souvenirs. Then, I notice a Holland America walking tour and catch their coattail for awhile listening in. The guide said that Vladivostok usually gets a lot of snow in winter; however, this year they had none. This was concerning to me, regarding thoughts of global warming.

At the ocean I walk along a beach and see recreational sites, such as, an IMAX theatre and amusement park with colorful rides. Overall, I enjoy the sea breeze, taking in the atmosphere. From there, I slowly head back to the ship and wander through neighborhoods. It’s a pleasant day for a walking tour, and I really do not want to go back.

IMG_4255

Overall, Vladivostok Walking Tour

I like the European-style culture of this city. Even though I’m not a big military buff, I enjoy taking in the history of this intriguing city. With nice weather, a walking tour was easy and pleasant with the refreshing sea breeze, the trains humming throughout the city, numerous coffee shops and great shopping. However, I regret not finding a good Russian Restaurant for some bright beet borscht. Oh well, maybe next time.

Even though there was a predominant military focus on this Vladivostok walking tour, it still feels like an emerging art scene is trying to express from this culture. I found colorful, offbeat graffiti and murals along the way with coffee shops on almost every corner. Being at the terminus of the Trans-Siberian Railway, I could easily imagine all the unique stories from the past of epic journeys ending or beginning, along with emotional hellos and good-byes in Vladivostok. Bon Voyage Vladivostok, next time I hope to find you by train.

Incredible Vladivostok & The Russian Far East

You are here.

Often when people think of going to Russia for the first time they have a vague idea of what to expect from their trip. And even if potential travelers have some expectations, they don’t usually go beyond bears, balalaikas, vodka, and, of course, the two magnificent Russian capitals.

Although Moscow and Saint Petersburg are rightfully considered to be the heart of Russia, this incredible country is so multifaceted in terms of nature, culture, history, and people, that even if you put both of them on your travel agenda, you won't get much closer to understanding the enigma of the mysterious Russian soul (although will definitely fall in love with this one-of-a-kind country). To properly comprehend the splendor of Russia, you need to look off the beaten path. And one of the best places to have a closer look at is glorious Vladivostok .

Why Go to Vladivostok

The most significant city in the Russian Far East, Vladivostok is known as the town of sailors. It was founded only 160 years ago as a small military port and, despite being one of the youngest additions to the country, somehow managed to find its way to all the "Best Russian Cities to Visit" lists over the years.

Its name originated from the combination of two words, vladet  (meaning "to own") and vostok (meaning "east"), giving a clue for anyone, curious to find Vladivostok on a map.

For obvious reasons, the neighboring Chinese are not very fond of the city's name and if you happen to travel the land of the rising sun, you are most likely to hear them talk about the city, using its Chinese historical name Haishenwai, translated as the "small seaside village".

Quick Vladivostok Facts

  • Location: Russia, Primorsky Krai
  • Area: 331.16 sq km (127.86 sq mi)
  • Population: 604,901
  • Founded: 1860
  • Currency: Russian Rouble

Surrounded by water on three sides, Vladivostok boasts a superb geographical location as well as the status of the home port of the Russian Navy fleet, located in the Pacific Ocean. As you can guess, the military importance influenced the development of the city the most.

During Soviet times, for 40 years the city of Vladivostok was a secret navy base, closed for any visitors who didn't have official (and usually work-related) permission to enter the picturesque town.

And almost half a century of isolation is what helped the capital of the Far East to keep its Russian identity despite being much closer to China and North Korea than to the capital of the country. Even more, both Los Angeles and Canberra are closer to Vladivostok, than Moscow is!

This amazing city is truly a remarkable place and an incredible fusion of Asian, European, and its native Russian cultures. But don't think that with all that influence, Vladivostok has lost its personality, far from it! On the contrary, it took the best it could from the different worlds and blended it into its identity, creating something special you won't find anywhere else in the world.

How to Travel to Vladivostok

As a rule, people prefer to spend a couple of days exploring Vladivostok within their extensive Russian getaway instead of considering the city as an independent holiday destination. And one of the most popular ways to see what Russia has to offer is by going on a legendary Trans-Siberian journey . And it's hardly a surprise! If you take one of the most scenic countries and the longest railway route in the world, add the comfort of a 1st class rail car and a knowledgeable tour curator to the mix, you'll surely get a recipe of a journey of a lifetime.

In this case, amazing Vladivostok acts as the last stop on the Trans-Siberian Railway (or the first one, depending on whether you prefer to travel from Europe to Asia or vice versa), a grand final or an awe-inspiring opening of an incredible Russian adventure. Regardless of the direction travelers choose, usually, they have a couple of days to explore the wonderful city. And there are some incredible things to see.

Did you know? Amazing Vladivostok serves as the last stop of the legendary Trans-Siberian Railway, famous as the longest railway route on the planet!

Things to See in Vladivostok

  • Russki Bridge

The striking symbol of the city, the Russian Bridge is one of the first places you should stop by during your Vladivostok travel . If you've ever wondered why locals affectionately call Vladivostok "our Russian San Francisco", one look at the elegant structure, strongly reminding the world-famous Golden Gate Bridge, is enough to satisfy your curiosity. The glorious construction looks very impressive in the daylight, but when the night falls and the Russky Bridge lights up, it switches from being very impressive to be unforgettable. The illumination was designed to make the structure look like it is floating in the air, leaving visitors with a bit of a mystical aftertaste as well as a bunch of amazing photos.

The construction of the world's longest cable-stayed bridge was accompanied by extreme weather conditions, including strong winds and very low outside temperatures. Even the installation of the final consoles, closing the structure had to happen at night! The reason for this is solar radiation, coming from the sun, that is capable of influencing the characteristics of the steel blocks ever so slightly, but for joining the grooves of such a complex structure extreme accuracy is a "must".

Top Vladivostok Attractions:

Submarine S-56 Museum

Eagle's nest observation point.

  • Vladivostok Fortress Museum
  • Primorskiy Oceanarium
  • Bukhta Lazurnaya
  • Popov Island

The legendary Submarine S-56 is one of the most remarkable Vladivostok tourist attractions. Once the most efficient Soviet submarine of the USSR during World War II, now it's an eternal monument to the bravery of the Russian soldiers.

In order not to sound baseless in our praises, let us share some interesting facts about the ship. The Submarine S-56 was declared sunk 16 times by Hitler's army, it destroyed 10 enemy submarines, seriously damaged 4 more, and became one of the first submarines to make its way around the Earth. And it's only according to the official figures!

The captain of the ship said that the real number of the submarine’s victories is much bigger but keeping any kind of records was rather difficult during the war and part of the data was lost.

Now the iconic ship has retired and serves as a living museum, welcoming hundreds of visitors every day. During the guided tour you can learn the history of the heroic ship and see what life was like for its crew all those years ago.

Submarine S-56

Another distinguishing characteristic that Vladivostok shares with The City by the Bay is that it was built on the hills, scattered along the shores of the Golden Horn Bay.

The Eagle's Nest is the highest hill in historical Vladivostok, part of the Sikhote-Alin mountain range, boasting a very interesting phenomenon called "Broken Bow" when, under certain conditions, the observer can see his or her shadow, projected on clouds and sometimes surrounded by colorful halo-like rings.

Although we can't guarantee that you will be able to catch the peculiar phenomenon when visiting the Eagle's Nest Observation Point on the top of the eponymous hill, we can promise that the incredible views over spectacular Vladivostok won't leave you disappointed.

There are two ways to get to the top of Eagle's Nest. You can choose an old-school way and get to the observation point by taking the stairs, although keep in mind that there are almost 400 steps, leading to the top. Travelers who prefer to put their energy into exploring the city rather than stair climbing are welcome to take a funicular that can take you to the Eagle's Nest Observation Point in a bit over 1.5 minutes.

Beyond Vladivostok: Russia's Far East Attractions

As you can see, Vladivostok is a remarkable place that is worth your attention, just as much as the whole region does. The Far East of Russia is extraordinary and, unlike the European part of the country, less discovered, not spoilt for visitors, but just as much ready to surprise.

If you feel like a trip to Vladivostok is not enough to quench your thirst for adventure, you can spice up your Russian Far East travel by visiting the "Land of the Leopard" National Park, protecting the endangered Amur tigers and Far Eastern leopards, the rarest big cats on the planet.

Or you can travel to the Russian Loch Ness, the Labynkyr Lake in the Sakha Republic (although locals prefer to use its unofficial name, Yakutia). According to the local legend, the lake is home to a terrible monster, called Labynkyr's Devil. Quite a few scientific expeditions, trying to find a creature were held over the years but to no avail, although the scientists were unable to prove that the devil is nothing more than local folklore. In 2005, the animal jaws and bones were found in the huge anomaly crack in the bottom of the lake, so the theory about the Labynkyr's Devil is still a mystery to be uncovered.

Amur Tiger

Into the Wilderness Spice up your Russian Far East travel by visiting the "Land of the Leopard" National Park, protecting the endangered Amur tigers and Far Eastern leopards, the rarest big cats on the planet!

Another interesting place to explore is the picturesque Kamchatka Peninsula. The area is overflowing with volcanos, there are 160 of them on the territory of 270 000 sq km (100 000 sq mi) and 29 are still active and can be hiked. The daredevils who've done it say that the views are jaw-dropping and that seeing the fumes, escaping from the top, and knowing that there are tonnes of molten rock under your feet definitely bring the experience into the "like no other" category.

Just staying in the capital of Kamchatka, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, surrounded by the three magnificent volcanoes, can be a nerve-wracking experience. Two of the giants are still active and from time to time travelers can feel the ground shattering beneath their feet which can be slightly shocking, to say the least. Locals, on the other hand, are very fond of the magnificent landmarks and affectionately call them "our domestic volcanos".

Kamchanta Region

There is a lot more to Russia that meets the eye and the Far East Region of the biggest country in the world is a treasure waiting to be discovered! It boasts everything a dream travel destination has to have, including the remarkable cities, breathtaking nature, unique cultures, and amazing landmarks. And no Russia vacation can do without a trip to the miraculous capital of the Far East. If you are interested in booking a Vladivostok trip to see its wonders for yourself, don't hesitate to contact one of our experienced travel specialists for details.

Vladivostok

The unofficial capital of the Russian Far East and one of Russia's most important commercial ports and naval bases, Vladivostok ('Master the East') is also a thoroughly charming city, with a gorgeous, hilly setting, striking architecture and numerous verdant islands and sandy bays along its Pacific coastline. Most notable of these is Golden Horn Bay (named for its likeness to Istanbul’s), over which now soars a massive suspension bridge, one of two built in recent years that have hugely improved the city's lumbering Soviet-era infrastructure.

Russia detains South Korean in country’s east on suspicion of spying

Russia has detained a South Korean in the country’s east, accusing him of spying.

Citing the authorities, the Russian state-run TASS news agency identified the man as Baek Won-soon and said he had been detained in the city of Vladivostok “at the start of the year”, before being transferred to Moscow for “investigative actions” at the end of last month.

Baek, whose case has been classified as “top secret”, is being held in Lefortovo Prison, where a court on Monday ordered his detention to be extended until June 15, TASS said.

The agency cited an unnamed law enforcement official as saying Baek had passed on information “constituting state secrets to foreign intelligence services.” No further details were made public.

South Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement its consulate had been providing assistance since it became aware that Baek had been detained. It declined to give more details on the matter citing the ongoing investigation.

The Yonhap news agency’s Korean service said Baek was a missionary who had been involved in rescuing North Korean defectors and providing humanitarian aid. He was detained in January a few days after arriving in Vladivostok by land from China, the agency added.

The incident marks the first time a South Korean has been detained in Russia on spying charges.

Russia labelled South Korea an “unfriendly” country in 2022 because of its support for Western sanctions against Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine.

Russia has also deepened relations with North Korea after leader Kim Jong Un travelled to Russia last September and met Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The United States and others have accused North Korea of providing weapons to Russia for use in its war in Ukraine in exchange for technological know-how to advance Pyongyang’s military modernisation programme.

Both countries have denied the allegations.

Over the past year, Russia has detained multiple foreign nationals and accused them of committing various offences.

US journalist Evan Gershkovich was detained for alleged espionage in March 2023 and is also being held at Lefortovo prison, which is notorious for its harsh conditions and keeping detainees in near-total isolation. His detention has been extended until the end of March with court proceedings held behind closed doors.

In October, Russian-US journalist Alsu Kurmasheva was detained for failing to register as a foreign agent and later charged with spreading “false information” about the Russian military. Her detention has been extended until April.

Espionage carries a maximum jail term of 20 years in Russia.

Gershkovich and Kurmasheva both deny the charges against them.
