3. See the Abandoned Ship at Zakynthos

Escape to the island of Zakynthos to see one of the Greek islands , most remarkable sights — the abandoned ship. 

Nestled along its rugged coastline, this weathered vessel stands sits on a white sandy bay, surrounded by speed cliffs on one side and the inviting blue sea on the other. 

The official name of this beach is Navagio Beach, although it’s also referred to as Shipwreck Beach and Smugglers Cove . You can only access it by boat.

The beach is famous for its timeworn hull and the skeletal frame of an abandoned ship. The MV Panagiotis is a 157-foot shipping vessel. It ran aground in 1980 and has been there ever since.

Set against the backdrop of Zakynthos’ outstanding azure waters and picturesque cliffs, the abandoned ship looks like it’s been plucked from a Pirates of the Caribbean movie . 

*For Summer 2023, you cannot set foot on the beach due to landslide risks which are being looked into.

Here are some traditional Greek foods I recommend trying. I’m a vegetarian , so these are some of the foods I tried during my time in Greece.

• Feta Cheese : A crumbly textured, creamy and tangy white cheese
• Greek Salad: A refreshing combination of crisp lettuce, juicy tomatoes, cucumbers, red onions, Kalamata olives, and creamy feta cheese, dressed with olive oil, oregano and a hint of lemon
• Gyros : The traditional gyro is made from lamb or chicken. As a vegetarian, I was able to find roast vegetable versions, wrapped in warm pita bread with fresh vegetables and tangy tzatziki sauce.
• Olives: Greece’s renowned olives, available in various types and colours and are often a tasty accompaniment with a glass of wine
• Souvlakia: Traditionally these are meat skewers made from marinated pork or chicken. The vegetarian version is skewered vegetables including peppers and tomatoes, accompanied by pita bread, tzatziki sauce, and a side of fries or rice.
• Baklava: Sweet, sticky and often served as a dessert these flaky pastry layers, are sweetened with honey and filled with a delightful blend of ground nuts and spices.

I was almost in two minds about whether to include it in this list as unlike lots of other places in Greece, the whole area is quite untouched or tainted by tourism. 

Xylokastro-Evrostini looks like it belongs in the Swiss Alps – the stone houses are fitted with quaint fireplaces, and there are Christmas decorations up all year round. The area is dotted with meandering roads going through alpine trees, spring-flower meadows with snow-capped mountains and bright blue lakes. 

Because of the rugged mountainous terrain, this is a great place to enjoy outdoor pursuits , which include hiking to waterfalls, ATV, and kayaking on lakes. In the winter, the area receives a lot of snow so popular activities include skiing, skating and snowmobiling.

Also, in Athens in particular, scams from taxi drivers are rife – check what price a journey should be with your accommodation, and agree on the price before you get in the taxi.

15 Essential Greece Travel Tips: Things to Know For Your First Visit

From golden sandy beaches and dazzling blue skies to mouth-watering food, Greece offers a plethora of charms and irresistible attractions all year long. 

What’s more, the country is filled with warm-hearted and hospitable people who will help you enjoy a fabulous escape from your overworked and hectic life. 

That said, we wanted to share some essential Greece travel tips with you to help ensure that your trip goes smoothly. We also don’t want you to miss out on any of the classic Greek experiences!

1. Don’t forget to buy Travel Insurance

With all that’s been going on in the world, we can’t stress enough how important it is to protect your trip and the money you spent on it. We do not travel without travel insurance.

There are a lot of options out there for insurance, but we use and stand by  Allianz Travel Insurance . Full disclosure, we receive financial compensation as ambassadors for their company.

That said, we’ve been purchasing plans through them for the past 7 years and they have never let us down. Canceled flights, delayed flights, lost luggage, and a global pandemic, they’ve been there for us.

We always renew their  AllTrips Premier  annual plan that covers all of our trips over a 12-month period. If you take more than 2 trips a year, it’s worth considering an annual plan.

For single trips, we recommend looking at their  OneTrip Prime  or  OneTrip Premier  plans.

2. Be prepared for the heat during Greece’s summer

Greece’s summer sun isn’t forgiving for tourists who don’t protect themselves against its scorching heat. Heatstroke and sunburns are common for tourists visiting Greece in the summer. As is dehydration, which commonly presents as a stomach bug.

In Greece, summer temperatures can go beyond 95 F (35 C). On some days, it even rises above 104 F (40 C). 

To protect yourself, always wear a wide-brim sun hat, and a pair of sunglasses. Bring a refillable water bottle, and drink frequently to help keep yourself hydrated on your sightseeing and beach trips in Greece. 

Sunblock is a must too, especially if you’re hitting the beaches and outdoor archaeological attractions in Greece. And, even if you’re wearing sunblock, try to avoid direct sunlight as often as possible. 

Wearing light-colored clothes is one of the most important Greece travel tips. Black is cool, but it’s not ideal in a place as sunny and warm as Greece in summer. Also, opt for skirts, or loose long wide pants, and wide, airy, and long sleeves. 

If you’re visiting ancient sites in Greece, do it as early as possible, to avoid walking under the heat of the sun. Afterward, you can stop by a couple of museums, and take advantage of their air-conditioning as the temperature gets hotter during midday. 

3. Consider visiting Greece in September or June 

June and September are truly the best months to visit Greece. With lower rates for accommodations and flights, these months are perfect for those who want to save some cash on their Greece vacation. 

Last-minute ferry tickets to the Greek islands are easier during these months, too. Don’t get me wrong, June and September are still part of the country’s peak season, but most Greece attractions and places have fewer crowds during these months. The weather is also less windy and cooler.  

4. Buy your ferry, airplane, and train passes in advance 

Greece is an extremely popular destination, especially in the summer months. And, that means you should expect tickets for ferries to be sold out weeks in advance, especially if you’re visiting Greece in June, July, August, and September. 

Try to plan as far in advance as you can and book all the needed tickets in advance. A lot of Europe travels during the summer holiday season, so it’s not just overseas tourists you’ll be up against when it comes to accommodation, ferries, tours, etc.

5. Spend more than a week in Greece 

Despite the country’s small size, it is packed with attractions and places to visit. I honestly think this is one of the most overlooked aspects of Greece travel.

People don’t do enough research and only realize once they are in the country that they don’t have the time they need for everything that interests them. Don’t make this mistake!

Also, don’t try to do too much in a short period of time. If you have less than a week to explore the country, focus on 3 destinations instead of trying to fit in 6 or 7 areas. Travel between the islands takes time and is often met with delays or even cancellations due to the wind.

For a first-time visit to Greece, we’d recommend 2 weeks if you can. This will give you time to visit Athens, a couple of sights on the mainland, and spend a week in the Greek Isles.

6. Learn a little Greek lingo 

Learning some Greek phrases will do wonders for your Greece vacation. To me, it’s one of the most important Greece travel tips we can offer. 

Not only will it make your vacation more immersive, but Greeks also love it when you can speak a few of their phrases or words. 

Since English is prevalent in Greece, learning their lingo isn’t exactly necessary. But, they will have a deeper level of respect for those who show effort in speaking their language. 

7. Check out the less explored beaches in Greece

The beaches on Greece’s most popular islands, like Santorini and Mykonos, can be extremely crowded. No matter when you visit.  

If you want to steer clear of the crowds, head to the more serene islands, like Astypalaia, Ithaca, Donoussa, Sikinos, Kimolos, Tinos, and Andros.

Furthermore, you can enjoy a road trip along Greece’s coast in South Crete, Evia, Chalkidiki, Pelion, Epirus, and Peloponnese. 

8. Consider visiting during an annual festival or event 

Some of the best and most exciting festivals in Greece take place in summer. The Athens Epidaurus Festival, for one, is one of Europe’s oldest performing arts festivals. 

Inaugurated in 1955, this festival features numerous shows of music, dance, and theater. Even better, this festival gives you the chance to enjoy the ancient Greek Epidaurus amphitheater, which is known for its acoustics and is fully operational. 

The amphitheater’s acoustics are so phenomenal that performers won’t need a microphone to be heard in the remotest tier. 

You can also experience Panyigiria (Greek folk festivals). These folk festivals are scattered throughout the country in summer and are fun social gatherings. 

9. Bring a refillable water bottle 

Luckily, tap water in Greece is, in general, safe to drink. So, bring a refillable and reusable water bottle to reduce plastic use and save money during your trip.

This practice goes a long way toward being a mindful traveler and engaging in the principles of Leave No Trace while you travel.  

10. Greece safety tips to be mindful about

Greece is generally a safe destination, even for female solo travelers. Violent attacks in Greece are a rarity. Still, there are a few important safety tips you should take note of. 

Pickpocketing is prevalent, specifically in Athens. Though Greek police have cracked down on some of these perpetrators, you should be aware of your surroundings, and hide your valuables when you’re in busy streets, markets, or using public transportation. 

11. Give Athens at least 3 days  

There’s no better place to start a Greece vacation than Athens. Not only is it the main international gateway to Greece, but it also has a host of fantastic, world-class attractions. 

You could spend an entire week in this city, hitting known attractions, such as the Ancient Agora and the Parthenon. 

Athens is also home to tons of first-rate museums. And, luckily, most of these attractions are air-conditioned, giving summer visitors a respite amid the scorching summer heat. 

If it feels too hot outside, step inside the National Historical Museum and the National Archaeological Museum of Greece. You may also stop at Monastiraki’s covered markets, and pick up some Greek souvenirs.

Spending 3 days gives the perfect balance to see the main sites, hit up a few museums, and slow down just enough to enjoy the cafe life.

12. Don’t miss the Greek Islands 

Greece is home to around 1,200 to 6,000 islands. And, these islands are divided into six island groups: the North Aegean, Saronic, the Cyclades, Ionian, Sporades, and the Dodecanese. 

No matter what your travel style or interests are, you’ll find a Greek island that suits you. Some islands offer tranquility, peace, and solitude, while others have raucous nightlife and a party ambiance. 

While Santorini and Mykonos are the typical poster children for the Greek Islands, and their beautiful, we also love Samos and Patmos for a quieter experience.

13. Eat Greek Salad

One of the most delicious things you can eat while in Greece is a Greek Salad. I am not exaggerating when I say that every time we set foot in Greece, we eat weight in these salads!

Made from plump ripe vine tomatoes, red onions, cucumbers, and green peppers, this salad is topped with a generous brick of Greek feta cheese. It is then sprinkled with a seasoning that contains a variety of herbs, salt, and pepper. It is then dressed with olive oil and vinegar.

It is not only refreshing but insanely delicious!

14. Try a Cappucino Freddo

Or as we like to call it, Greek rocket fuel. Coffee is a rite of passage, and with the heat of the summer months, it’s best to drink it ice cold. Enter the Freddo.

You can have it straight up or with milk – we prefer it with milk. They also offer it sweet or unsweet. But be warned, the sweet option is very sweet.

This national drink can be found pretty much anywhere and we suggest you try it in one of the charming street cafes you’ll find in Athens or on any of the Greek Islands.

15. Bring good shoes

Lastly, and in my opinion, most importantly, make sure you bring solid shoes with you to Greece! You’re going to be exploring ancient ruins and walking on cobblestone streets.

I can’t tell you how many people I saw wearing shoes with heels or slippery soles struggling to enjoy their time in Greece. Not to mention, bad footwear is dangerous and can lead to injury.

We both lived in our Chaco sandals while in Greece. They offer the coolness of a sandal but have an insanely good grip for exploring. They also have comfortable soles and give good support for long days of walking.

The Perfect 7 to 10 Day Greece Mainland Itinerary

The islands typically tend to be the star of the show when visiting the ancient country of Greece.  This comes with good reason, as the Greek islands are truly stunning locations for any kind of traveler. Albeit, the mainland of Greece is a knockout destination that’s typically off the beaten path for any mainstream traveler. In this 7 to 10-day Greece mainland itinerary, expect waterfalls, mighty mountain ranges, medieval towns, bustling and exciting cities, and the mystical home of the Greek Gods.

Getting To & Around Mainland Greece

This route spans the majority of the mainland, from the southern Peloponnese to the northern city of Thessaloniki , so various modes of transport are possible as well as ideal. 

My recommendation is to hire a car and drive throughout your trip. The longest journey time is around 4 ½ hours making driving the easiest, most convenient, and most cost-efficient way to travel around the Greek mainland. You can browse Rentalcars.com to compare options for hiring a car.

A mainland Greece road trip is one of the best ways to experience this relatively undiscovered part of the country by tourists.

If you’re planning on flying into Greece, I recommend flying into the Athens International Airport. The itinerary begins in the capital and it’s the main airport, making flights the most frequent and affordable in comparison to other airports in Greece. 

Another option for getting around on this mainland Greece itinerary is by bus. The KTEL bus system is essentially the national bus transport, connecting cities and towns throughout the country.

You can typically find routes for major cities or towns and sometimes smaller places if they’re frequently visited by tourists and locals.

Costs differ, so you can expect to pay between €5 and €25 depending on the route and although tickets can be affordable, if you choose to use the bus as a main means of transport throughout the country it can add up quickly.

Train transport is also another option, but the routes in Greece aren’t as extensive as in other countries in Europe. This means that there may be gaps in transportation, but those can be filled by bus.

The downside to taking bus or train transport is that if you’re hoping to visit more remote destinations in mainland Greece, it can be hard to make your way there from the main transport routes. These tickets can also easily add up to double the cost of a rental car, so keep this in mind if you’re torn between the two.

If you don’t like the idea of public transport or renting a car, you can also find tour groups that go to the majority of destinations, making it a seamless way to travel without the stress of driving or planning.

7 to 10-Day Greece Mainland Itinerary

The mainland of Greece is full of countless treasures. From the rustic mountains and quaint villages of central Greece and the Peloponnese to the hectic and exciting cities of Athens and Thessaloniki; you’re bound to discover countless new jewels in the most undiscovered part of Greece; the mainland.

While the islands are outstanding locations to visit on any dream itinerary, the best way to get to know the heart of Greece and everyday life is through the mainland. 

Day 1 – Athens

This mainland Greece itinerary begins with 2 days in the same place where modern democracy began as well as the capital city, Athens . You’ll likely be flying into the Athens International Airport, making the Greek capital a great and convenient starting point.

Athens is a great way to begin as you’ll have the opportunity to get your bearings in a new country, discover Greek foods, and see some of the most important ruins in ancient history.

Although the city is quite small, there’s an abundance of things to do. Because of this, you can decide to mold your time in different ways, from exploration of the Ancient Greek world to the cultural side of what makes modern-day Athens what it is today.

No matter how you choose to spend your time, make sure to not miss a visit to the Acropolis , a wander around the classic Greek neighborhood of Plaka , and a long wholesome meal at a classic Greek tavern.

Other ways to explore further into Athens are plentiful and unique; venture into the southern suburbs of Athens to explore Poseidon’s Temple in Cape Sounio or take a dip in the sea around an hour away from Athens at Schinias beach.

Where to Stay in Athens

Athens Ivy Suites – Located only 500 meters from Monastiraki Square, this hotel is an excellent central place to stay in the Greek capital. There are several rooms, a restaurant, a shared terrace, airport shuttle, breakfast and more to offer guests.

The Modernist Athens – A sleek and modern hotel in the Kolnaki neighborhood, this hotel has a range of cool rooms, private parking, a fitness centre and a superb buffet breakfast in the mornings.

101 Adrianou Apartments – These suites are excellent for those looking for a comfortable, central option. Situated within walking distance of Syntagma Square, there is daily housekeeping and incredible views of the city.

City Circus Athens – Boasting a terrace with an Acropolis view, this hostel is great for backpackers. There are great common areas for meeting other travellers and a range of dorms and privates to choose from.

Day 2 – Athens

Spend your second day in Athens getting to know the city a bit deeper. If you spent day one checking off all of the well-known highlights like the Acropolis and exploring some cool, central neighborhoods, consider taking in a museum or two on your second day – such as the Archaeological Museum or the Benaki Museum.

You could also opt to get a bit off the beaten path and explore some cool neighborhoods like Psyri and Monastiraki or even opt to go on a food tour , where you can learn about all of the Athenian specialities.

Day 3 – Nafplio and Epidaurus (Peloponnese) 

After getting acquainted with Greece in Athens, you’ll head south to the neighboring Peloponnese region.

The Peloponnese region is an alluring peninsula south of central Greece offering one of the most exciting and unique experiences in Greece. Although this itinerary only offers a taster of one day in the Peloponnese, I highly suggest exploring the region on a deeper level if you have the time.

With just one day in the Peloponnese, you’ll make your way first to the picturesque town of Nafplio. Nafplio is a coastal city in the Peloponnese offering idyllic views and architecture, wonderful food, and a pleasant place to experience the Peloponnese.

After, head about half an hour away to the ancient town of Epidaurus to explore the stunningly peaceful nature of the Peloponnese and the ancient ruins and theatre of the town of Epidaurus.

Where to Stay in Nafplio

Amymone and Adiandi – This quaint hotel in Nafplio is an excellent base for your first couple of days in the Peloponnese. They have a range of bright, clean and comfortable rooms on offer and a great location for exploring the town and the region.

Carpe Diem Boutique Hotel – For those looking for a hip place to stay in Naflplio, this boutique hotel is sure not to disappoint. They have a number of chic rooms on offer, breakfast available in the mornings and plenty of amenities to ensure your stay is fantastic.

Day 4 – Delphi

Day 4 of this road trip will bring you back through central Greece and to the legendary, and one of the most visited places on the mainland of Greece, the ancient site of Delphi.

Delphi is about 3 ½ hours away from Athens and on the way to Delphi, you’ll also pass through Ancient Corinth and the Corinth Canal connecting central Greece to the upper point of the Peloponnese. Alternatively, you could also visit the ancient site of Olympia, another incredible place in the Peloponnese.

If you have extra time and are particularly interested in ancient history, I recommend making a stop in Corinth to explore the ruins and the grand Corinth Canal and see the blue water of the Corinthian Gulf before heading to Delphi.

Delphi is the first stop in central Greece and once spending time there, you’ll quickly understand why it’s one of the most visited spots in Greece. Take time to explore the archaeological site and museum, witness the famous Temple of Apollo, and find yourself in awe of the Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia.

Delphi is also an area of outstanding natural beauty, so even just spending a few hours in the area is a great chance to connect to nature. Afterwards, head to the nearby town of Arachova to enjoy a local meal for lunch. You could also visit the lovely village of Nafpaktos.

Where to Stay in Delphi

Arion Hotel – Located only about 200 metres from the archaeological site, this three-star guesthouse is a great choice. They have a number of cosy rooms on offer and an unbeatable location for exploring this area.

Amalia Hotel Delphi – This 4-star hotel is an excellent option for those looking for a bit more of a luxurious stay while visiting Delphi. They have several lovely, plush rooms on offer, a wonderful location and a great swimming pool to enjoy.

Day 5 – Meteora 

After leaving Arachova and Delphi, day 5 will take you about 3 ½ hours away to one of the best places to visit in all of Greece, Meteora. One of the highlights of taking the time to explore the Greek mainland is that you don’t have to make a choice between visiting Delphi or Meteora.

Day 6 – Zagori

Days 6 & 7 of this route will bring you closer to the northern Greek border and 3 hours from Meteora to the Pindus mountain range and region of Zagori.

The region of Zagori is a collection of around 40 villages cosily nestled in the Pindos mountains and full of tradition, rugged wilderness, and truly breathtaking scenery.

Day 7 – Zagori

On your second day in the Zagori, take a bit more time to explore some of the places you didn’t make it to on the first day. Enjoy the laid-back nature and stunning scenery of the area and get active on a few of the many hiking trails you can find.

If you’re following the 7-day itinerary rather than 10, this day will conclude your trip. Either head onward in Greece to your following destination or head back to Athens to fly onward. 

Day 8 – Mount Olympus

After spending time in the pristine Zagori region, you’ll head northwest to one of the most famous areas in Greece and one of the most famous mountains in the world, Mount Olympus.

Mount Olympus is about a 3-hour drive away from Zagori and although the hike to the top in its entirety is only recommended for well-experienced travelers, you can still enjoy the famous scenery with a nice hike and time in the nearby villages.

Although its fame is due to being the home of the Greek Gods, it is the first national park in Greece and one with some of the most diverse flora and fauna in the country.

The town of Litochoro is located at the foot of Mount Olympus and is a great spot to base yourself to explore the mountain and have a start on many of the trails.

The town itself dates back to the 14th century, has plenty of appetizing restaurants, and still has abundant Macedonian architecture throughout the town offering a unique glimpse into the region and its history.

Day 9 – Thessaloniki

While the majority of this trip is amongst nature and smaller Greek villages and towns, the last stop for those spending the full 10 days on this Greece mainland itinerary is the second biggest city in Greece, Thessaloniki .

The city itself is about a 2 1⁄2 hour drive away from Mount Olympus and within the city, you’ll find the wonder of the proud Greek mountainous treasure keeping watch over Thessaloniki. The city itself is typically quite overlooked on any Greek itinerary but is worth the visit in its own right.

From the gritty Balkan architecture, to what’s known as the best food scene in Greece, Thessaloniki is easily one of the most underrated destinations on the Greece mainland.

During your visit, make sure to have a fresh bougatsa from a local bakery (a specialty pastry originating in Thessaloniki), wander the seafront and port, stop by the White Tower, and wander through Ladadika, Thessaloniki’s old town as well as Morichovou Square.

Day 10 – Thessaloniki

Spend your final day in Thessaloniki (and the final day of this 10-day Mainland Greece itinerary) digging deeper and really getting to know Greece’s second city.

Take the time to explore some cool neighborhoods, take a lot of leisurely strolls along the waterfront or, perhaps, take a food tour to learn more about the gastronomic scene in this “foodie” city.

Thessaloniki also has one of the largest airports in Greece offering routes connecting to the rest of Europe, making it the perfect departure point at the end of this trip. You can also reach other Balkan destinations from the city, as it’s easy to get from Thessaloniki to Sofia, Bulgaria and other neighbouring countries.

If you’re keen on exploring deeper into the Peloponnese, you can easily tack on another few days or week and head further south into the region, discovering Ancient Sparta, the crystalline Mani Peninsula, and the Medieval island town of Monemvasia with its beautiful Venetian castle.

After visiting the towns of Zagori, head to Ioannina, the capital city of the Zagori region, to enjoy one of the oldest lakes in the world, Lake Pamvotis.

For those interested in exploring a different region of mainland Greece, I suggest making your way to Volos, a port city in the region of Thessaly full of history, culture, delicious cuisine and the gateway to the neighboring Northern Sporades islands, Skiathos and Skopelos.

When to Travel to Greece

If you want to take advantage of all the beautiful beaches, April to October are the best months to travel to Greece.

We travelled to Greece in October, and I have to admit it was very windy on the islands and got chilly at night. Although we lucked out with the weather, we didn’t swim as much as I wanted because it was too cool. On the flip side, it was less busy, and because of this, accommodation was cheaper. 

But, to my surprise, some Greek islands shut down for the “off-season” between November-April. Also, some of the restaurants and hotels we were looking at had already shut down for the season. So when we go back, I’d love to visit in June, when the days are longer, the weather is hotter, but the crowds are not at their peak.

How to Get to Greece

Getting to Greece is easier than you might think. The country has several international airports that receive flights from all over the world. So if you’re coming from Europe, you can easily find direct flights to Athens, the capital city on mainland Greece. However, if you are flying in from the United States or Canada, you will most likely have to fly to another major airport in the UK or Europe, and from there connect to Athens.

From Athens, you can connect to other Greek islands or cities via a range of transportation options. In the next section, we’ll explore the best ways to get around the country and make the most of your time there.

How to Get Around Greece when Island Hopping

Greece is a country that offers endless opportunities for exploration, and getting around is a vital part of any itinerary. You can choose from various modes of transportation to reach different parts of the country. And each option has its advantages. So let’s dive into each of them below.

Ferry or Boat

When travelling to Greece, taking a ferry or boat is a must-do if you’re looking for a memorable and authentic travel experience. Many Greek islands can only be reached by boat, so hopping on a ferry will give you access to some of the most stunning beaches and towns on the Aegean Sea. In addition, ferries are affordable and offer both economy and business-class options. You can book your tickets in advance through the Greek ferry companies’ websites or travel agencies.

Tip : If you tend to get seasick on boats, get these acupressure motion sickness wrist bands . I swear by them! Plus they are low cost, and you can re-use them throughout your trip.

Another option for getting around Greece is by car or our personal fave, ATV or scooter. Renting a vehicle allows you the freedom to explore the mainland and the islands on your own schedule. But be sure to research Greece’s driving laws and regulations and understand the requirements for renting a car. And always wear a helmet when going on an ATV or scooter.

Lastly, Uber and Taxi’s are an option in Greece if you don’t feel comfortable driving.

Greek buses are also a good choice for budget travellers. The KTEL bus system operates throughout Greece and offers affordable and reliable services. You can buy your tickets at the station or online in advance. Alternatively, hop-on-hop-off buses in cities like Athens, are an affordable way to get to all the major sites!

If you need more time or want to avoid long journeys, flying to your destination is also possible. Domestic flights are available from Athens to several islands and cities, making it easy to get around Greece quickly. This itinerary ends in Crete because it has a major airport connecting to many other European airports. 

No matter which mode of transportation you choose, be sure to plan ahead and book your tickets in advance to avoid any last-minute stress.

How to Pick Which Greek Islands to Visit

Planning your 10 days in Greece Itinerary can be both thrilling and overwhelming. Especially when it comes to choosing which islands to visit. To help you make the most of your trip, there are several factors to consider that will shape your itinerary based on your preferences.

What to Know Before You Go Greek Island Hopping

Euros, but most places we went to accepted visa cards.

Electricity:

Requires European Plugs. So if you don’t already have a universal adaptor plug that works worldwide , I recommend bringing this on all your travels. We have this one and love it! Not only does it work with my computer and hair curler, it has the additional four USB plugs at the top, to charge all your phone and any other gadgets!

The locals told us to drink bottled water. Hopefully, this will change in the coming years. I hate buying bottled water, due to the plastic waste, which is why we always travel with our own re-usable water bottle with a built-in filter straw .

Greek. Learning a couple of phrases will get you a long way with the Greek people. Seriously, they will adore you and give you better service if you use some simple Greek. Here are a couple of phrases to get you started:

Accommodations for Your 10 Day s in Greece Itinerary

Here is a quick breakdown of where we stayed when we went to Greece. For some background, we were travelling as a couple, without kids, and were looking for comfortable accommodations, that were both romantic and well located. We lucked out and really enjoyed everywhere we stayed, so all of these are accommodations I would recommend and would go back to.

Where to Stay in Athens

In Athens we stayed at the President Hotel . Overall, I was so impressed by their included breakfast and customer service. Plus, it’s in a great location, and has a stunning rooftop bar and pool, with views of the Acropolis. I would 100% recommend this hotel, especially if you are travelling for a special occasion like a honeymoon!

Where to Stay in Milos

We absolutely adored staying at Lithos Luxury Rooms . From the warm hospitality of Georgia, Eleni, and their entire family, to the meticulous care they put into maintaining the property, they made us feel incredibly welcome. The room was impeccably clean, and the entire atmosphere was serene and picturesque—I already miss it dearly! The homemade breakfast spread was beyond compare, offering an array of choices that changed daily, making it the best we’ve had in Greece.

The location was superb. Everyday we enjoyed strolling down to the port or taking a scenic walk to Mandraki. The peacefulness of the place was a true delight, and we appreciated the adults-only setting and the respectful attitude of all the guests. On the days we decided to relax by the pool, we were thrilled to have it all to ourselves!

Where to Stay in Santorini

For this trip, we stayed at the Dream Island Hotel ,  a boutique resort just off the main road in Fira, after some of our friends recommended it. The rooms were small but comfortable, and the hotel had a pool and included breakfast. I would definitely recommend it if you are looking for a hotel that is affordable (around $300 CAD mid-week) and in a good location. If we went back to Santorini, I think we would want to splurge on a hotel in Oia, with a splash pool and views of the sunset , however these typically go for well over $1,000 a night. A girl can dream!

Where to Stay in Ios

From the moment we arrived at the Sea Breeze Hotel in Ios , the lovely owners took exceptional care of us and made us feel right at home. The hotel’s ideal location made it easy for us to explore the island, and the nearby beaches were absolutely stunning. Plus, it’s nestled away from the bustling Chora but still within walking distance. The property itself is a true oasis. The rooms were clean, comfortable, and had breathtaking views of the sea from the balconies. It was a delight to wake up to such a beautiful sight each morning, and enjoy the infinity pool in the hot afternoons. Overall, Sea Breeze Hotel provided us with a delightful experience.

Where to Stay in Chania, Crete

Nestled within a charming Venetian building in the heart of Chania, Harismari Cozy Hotel offers an inviting and traditional accommodation experience. While the rooms may be compact, their tasteful design and central location in the Old Town make Harismari Cozy Hotel an ideal choice for those seeking a truly immersive experience in Chania.

Detailed 10 Days in Greece Itinerary: Greek Island Hopping Route

Day 1: athens.

We start our 10 days in Greece itinerary in Athens, the birthplace of Western civilization and one of the world’s oldest cities. Known for its iconic world heritage sites and rich history, Athens is a must-visit destination for any traveller.

Explore the Acropolis

Begin your day early in the morning by walking the Acropolis , an ancient citadel that houses some of the world’s most famous ruins, including the Parthenon. Marvel at the breathtaking views of the city from the hilltop, and learn about its fascinating history. Plus, get a glimpse into Greek mythology at the Acropolis Museum . If you have more time, or have an interest in ancient Greek art, don’t miss the  National Archaeological Museum .

Pro Tip: Buy your entrance ticket in advance to skip the inevitable line-up. And if you are interested in visiting the Acropolis museum after seeing the monuments, then the best deal is to buy a bundle ticket . This includes your admission to both the Acropolis monuments, the Acropolis Museum, and an experienced tour guide.

Stroll the Plaka

Afterward, take a stroll through the charming Plaka neighbourhood, where you’ll find quaint shops, tavernas, and cafes. Finally, stop by the Monastiraki Flea Market to pick up some souvenirs or indulge in street food.

Join an Athens Street Food Tasting Tour

Calling my fellow foodies!  If you’re like me and always on the hunt for the best bites while on vacation, then you can’t miss out on an Athens street food tour with a local guide . This tour is the real deal when it comes to authentic Greek cuisine. You’ll get to chow down on the best street food in Athens, sip on refreshing drinks, explore the city, and even hang out where the locals do. By the end, you’ll be stuffed (in the best way possible). Plus, you get to choose between a private or group tour, so it’s totally up to you. Don’t miss out on this delicious adventure!

Nightlife in Athens

Athens is also known for its vibrant nightlife, so don’t hesitate to experience the city’s bar scene after dark. From rooftop bars with stunning views to traditional tavernas with live music, Athens has something for everyone. Our favourite rooftop patio was A for Athens because of it’s incredible views of the Plaka; however, 360, Athenia, or City Zen are also great! Be sure to taste the local delicacies by sipping some traditional ouzo or raki. 

The following day, hop on a ferry and set off to the island of Milos! It’s time to leave the mainland and start our Greek Island Hopping adventure.

Day 2: Athens to Milos

After experiencing Athens’ rich history and vibrant nightlife, it’s time to explore the stunning beauty of Milos. Known for its crystal-clear waters and unique geological formations, Milos is a hidden gem perfect for some relaxation and unwinding.

Discover Sarakiniko Beach

To reach Milos, take a short flight from Athens International Airport. Alternatively, you can take a fast ferry from Piraeus Port. This will only take you three hours and offers stunning views of the Aegean Sea. 

Once you arrive, head straight to Sarakiniko Beach, famous for its unique lunar-like landscape and turquoise waters. This beach is perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and exploring the hidden coves. For the more adventurous, try snorkelling or scuba diving to discover the rich marine life.

Admire & Have Dinner at Klima

As the day draws to a close, enjoy a romantic sunset at the fishing village of Klima. While here, be sure to snap a few photos of the iconic colourful boat garages. This charming seaside town is renowned for its colourful houses, built right by the sea. Stroll along the harbour and admire the traditional boats before indulging in local fish dishes at one of the outdoor tavernas. 

With a day full of beach hopping and delicious food, it’s time to rest up for tomorrow’s adventures on the island of Milos.

Day 3: Milos

During Day 3 of your Greek island hopping itinerary, you’ll explore more of the rugged yet stunning island of Milos. Start your day with a trip to Mandrakia, another charming fishing village on the island of Milos. This is a picturesque destination that will steal the hearts of travellers with its vibrant colours and coastal atmosphere. Be sure to snap some photos, pet dozen homeless kitties that live in the area, and enjoy a cold drink and warm meal at the neighbouring tavern.

Sail to Kleftiko Bay & Explore the Plaka

Then, jump on board a boat and sail to Kleftiko Bay , an isolated cove with crystal-clear waters surrounded by towering white cliffs. Then, explore the hidden caves and secluded beaches by boat, or dip in the serene waters for a refreshing break. 

When the day winds down, take the chance to catch the sunset at Plaka, the island’s capital. This charming village is perched on a hill, offering stunning views of the Aegean Sea and the surrounding mountains. While here, visit the Milos Catacombs, a unique archaeological site that gives insight into the island’s early Christian history. After, enjoy a leisurely stroll through the winding streets and discover the quaint shops and beautiful viewpoints. 

Afterwards, make your way to a traditional taverna to indulge in some delicious Greek cuisine. While in Greece, we couldn’t get enough of the cheap and tasty lamb or chicken gyros! In Greece, gyros will only put you back € 2 each. So needless to say, they became our go-to quick dinner or lunch time meal. Following dinner, try a bite of the local specialty, wkarpouzopita (watermelon pie), for a sweet ending to your meal. 

With a day full of beach hopping and unforgettable experiences, it’s time to rest up for tomorrow’s adventure to Santorini.

Day 4: Milos to Santorini

After spending two amazing days on the island of Milos, it’s time to move on to the next stop on your Greek island hopping itinerary – the famous island of Santorini. Catch a high-speed ferry in the morning from Milos to Santorini and enjoy the scenic journey across the Aegean Sea.

Wine Tasting

As you arrive in Santorini, you’ll be greeted by the island’s iconic cliffside villages and stunning caldera views. Check into your boutique hotel and take some time to unwind and settle in. Later in the afternoon, head to one of the island’s many wineries and learn about Santorini’s unique viticulture. The island’s volcanic soil gives the local wines a distinct taste you won’t find anywhere else. After the wine tasting, take a dip in one of the secluded beaches in the area.

Tip: If you don’t feel comfortable renting a car or ATV, then hop on this day tour that brings you to a variety of wineries, beaches, and then Oia for sunset! Travelling made stress-free.

See the Iconic Santorini Sunset in Oia

Afterwards, head straight to the picturesque town of Oia to experience one of the most stunning sunsets in the world. The town’s whitewashed buildings and blue-domed churches create a stunning contrast against the orange and pink hues of the setting sun. This is  the  iconic Santorini look-out you see in all those incredible Instagram pictures. 

Following sunset, take a stroll through the charming streets of Oia and enjoy a delicious dinner at one of the town’s many tavernas. Don’t miss the chance to try Santorini’s famous tomato keftedes, small fried tomato balls that are a must-try dish on the island.

With a full day of exploring ahead, it’s time to rest up and prepare for the wonders that await you on Day 5 in Santorini.

Day 5: Santorini

Start your day off on a breathtaking note by waking up early to embark on a picturesque hike along the cliffs from Fira to Oia during the magical sunrise hours. This enchanting journey, which can take between 2 to 4 hours to complete, is best enjoyed in the morning when the sun’s heat is not yet too intense. Make sure to wear comfortable running shoes and carry an ample supply of water to stay hydrated along the way. It’s also advisable to bring some money in case you prefer to take a cab back to your hotel instead of hiking both ways. And of course, don’t leave behind your camera – the views you’ll encounter during the hike are absolutely awe-inspiring, offering countless opportunities for capturing those unforgettable moments.

After, head to the island’s famous Red Beach, to cool off in the crystal-clear water while you admire the stunning views of the red cliffs. Stay here all day, explore the island by ATV or head back to town for some shopping! 

In the evening, go to the vibrant town of Fira to wander the many beautiful boutiques and watch the sun dip into the Aegean Sea. After the sunset, stroll through Fira’s charming streets and enjoy a delicious dinner at one of the town’s many tavernas. While here, try the famous moussaka, a Greek version of Shepard’s Pie made with eggplant. After dinner, head out and enjoy Fira’s upbeat nightlife!

With a full day of exploring ahead, it’s time to rest up and prepare for the wonders that await you on Day 6 in Santorini, where you’ll have more time to explore the island’s hidden gems.

Day 6: Santorini

During Day 6, you’ll have plenty of time to discover the magic of Santorini. After breakfast, your day in Santorini begins with a visit to the Akrotiri archaeological site , where you can see the remains of the ancient Minoan civilization. This well-preserved city was buried under the ash of the Thira volcano eruption around 1627 BC and was discovered in 1967. To save time and skip the line, buy your tickets in advance and get an audio guide for free!

Lunch at Ammoundi Bay

For an unforgettable lunch experience in Santorini, I highly recommend going to Ammoudi Bay and indulging in a meal at the  Seafood Tavern . Let me tell you, it’s not just one of my most cherished meals in Greece but in all of Europe. The moment we arrived, we were captivated by the setting. Our table was nestled on a patio right by the Aegean Sea, with gentle waves caressing the shore beside us. I kid you not, I could almost reach out and touch the ocean if I knelt down.

Being in a fishing area, we couldn’t resist trying the seafood linguini, which exceeded our expectations. The flavours were exquisite, and every bite felt like a celebration of the sea’s bounty. The restaurant’s ambiance was quintessentially Greek, with traditional music, a warm and welcoming staff, and a backdrop of breathtaking scenery. It truly was the epitome of a perfect Greek lunch. If you find yourself in Santorini, I implore you not to miss out on this incredible culinary experience.

Catamaran Cruise Around Santorini

Since you’re limited on time but eager to experience the beauty of Santorini’s remarkable beaches, a  Catamaran Cruise around the island  is the perfect solution. This incredible excursion allows you to visit not only the top black sand beaches like  Kamari Beach, Perissa Beach, and Vlychada Beach but also numerous other stunning coastal gems. The added bonus? You’ll witness the magical sunset from the comfort of the catamaran, providing a unique perspective of Santorini’s awe-inspiring landscape. It’s worth noting that this was a must-do on our own itinerary, but unfortunately, we learned the hard way that booking in advance is essential, as spots fill up quickly. So don’t repeat our mistake – book your place on this  unforgettable experience   before your departure, ensuring you don’t miss out on the chance to create lifelong memories.

With a full day of exploring ahead, it’s time to rest up and prepare for the wonders that await you on Day 7 in Ios.

Day 7: Santorini to Ios

Following a peaceful night’s sleep on Santorini, it’s time to move on to the next destination on your Greek island hopping itinerary. Catch an early ferry from Athinios Port and set sail for the rugged and captivating island of Ios. Known for its stunning beaches and vibrant nightlife, Ios is a must-visit for any avid traveller in Greece. 

Upon arriving in Ios, drop your bags off at your accommodation and head straight to the beach. The island has over 30 beaches to choose from, so you’re sure to find the perfect spot to soak up some sun. Today head to Gialos Beach! Tucked away in a scenic bay near the port, Gialos Beach offers a more secluded and tranquil setting than other beaches. Surrounded by rocky cliffs and lush greenery, the beach boasts stunning views and a serene ambiance. Its calm waters make it suitable for swimming and snorkelling.

After enjoying a day in the sun, retreat to your hotel for a quick nap before exploring the island’s nightlife scene. Ios is renowned for its lively party atmosphere, with bars and clubs staying open until the early hours of the morning. Next, head to the buzzing Chora area and join the crowds on the dance floor. The vibrant Chora area is the place to be for night owls looking to dance the night away. The narrow alleys and colourful buildings set the perfect backdrop for the bustling bars and clubs that line the streets. 

Prepare for another exciting day in Ios as we move on to Day 8 of your ultimate 10 days in Greece itinerary.

Day 8: Ios 

Day 8 in Ios is made for beach hopping and relaxing! Start your day in Ios by exploring the island’s main town, Chora. Although you saw it last night, it looks much more picturesque with its whitewashed houses adorned with colourful bougainvillea during the day. Take a leisurely stroll through the bustling streets, stopping by local shops to browse for unique souvenirs and handicrafts. 

Afterward, head to Mylopotas Beach, Ios’s most popular and vibrant beach. Its long stretch of golden sand and crystal-clear turquoise waters attract visitors from all over the world. With a variety of beach bars, water sports activities, and sunbed rentals, Mylopotas offers a perfect blend of relaxation and entertainment. Or head to the more secluded Manganari Beach for a more intimate experience. 

Since last night was a big one, tonight we will enjoy a more laid-back evening at one of the island’s beachfront bars. Here you can sip on cocktails while listening to the sound of the waves. 

As the night draws to a close, retreat to your hotel for some much-needed rest. Day 8 of your itinerary promises to be just as exciting as you make your way from Ios to Chania, Crete.

Day 9: Ios to Chania, Crete

After a fun-filled night out in Ios, it’s time to move on to the next destination – Chania, Crete. While leaving Ios behind might be bittersweet, the stunning beauty of Chania is sure to make up for it. This charming city is one of Greece’s most popular tourist destinations, and it’s easy to see why. From its lovely Venetian harbour to its narrow streets lined with colourful buildings, Chania is full of Instagram-worthy spots and photo opportunities.

While you explore the city, stroll through the Old Town, with its historic architecture and maze-like streets. Stop by the Old Venetian Harbour and take in the views of the Mediterranean Sea. Enjoy delicious Greek cuisine at one of the many restaurants and tavernas in the city. Don’t miss out on trying some local specialties, such as dakos (a traditional Cretan salad made with barley rusk, tomato, feta cheese, and olive oil). Or borek, a savoury pie with zucchini, potatoes, and cheese.

The city’s rich gastronomy will have you indulging in traditional Cretan dishes and fresh seafood, such as kalitsounia and grilled octopus. For a hands-on culinary experience, try a Greek food tasting tour , or get your hand dirty at a cooking class and learn how to prepare authentic dishes. Not only do you get to enjoy an incredible lunch, but you can wow your friends and family back home with your new cooking skills!

Afterwards, get a good night’s sleep. Tomorrow we will visit to some of the most beautiful beaches on the Island.

Day 10: Chania, Crete

Chania, Crete is a fitting finale to your 10 days in Greece itinerary. 

And if you’re still feeling energetic, the beaches of Chania are not to be missed. Some of the most beautiful beaches in Crete, such as Elafonisi and Balos, are an easy day trip from the city and offer crystal-clear water and stunning scenery. Elafonisi is famous for having pink sand, and Balos is famous for its sandy lagoon and stunning views.

Seeking a more budget-friendly alternative that would offer a genuine taste of Greek island life, we turned to Ios. To our delight, Ios delivered stunning beaches where we could unwind and soak up the sun, just like Mykonos. Moreover, it surprised us with its vibrant nightlife scene, ensuring we had ample opportunities for entertainment and excitement. In the end, our decision to choose Ios over Mykonos allowed us to enjoy a remarkable island experience without compromising on beauty or fun.

If you’re lucky enough to have more than 10 days in Greece, consider adding Naxos to your island hopping itinerary. On average, a 10-day trip to Greece can cost anywhere between $1,500 to $3,000 per person, excluding airfare.

12 Fantastic Experiences On The Island Of Crete, Greece

Located in the southern part of the Aegean Sea, Crete is the largest of the Greek islands. The Minoans occupied Crete from 2700 to 1420 B.C., and many other civilizations followed, making the island a fantastic destination for history buffs. Mountains, valleys, rivers, and beaches provide a great variety of nature experiences for travelers of all ages. While some of the highest mountains are covered with snow in the winter, the southern part of the island has a milder climate and nearly year-round sunshine.

Crete has two international airports — one in Heraklion and one in Chania — and is very well connected to the rest of Greece by ferries, mostly to Athens on the mainland and to other major islands.

To enjoy the following unique experiences, plan for at least two days on Crete. Driving in Crete can be hazardous, so you might prefer to take one of the island’s many guided tours .

Mourtzanakis Residence

1. Enjoy Greek Hospitality At The Mourtzanakis Residence

If you follow my advice and stay for at least two days, consider staying at the Mourtzanakis Residence in Achlada, about half an hour north of Heraklion. You can get there either by bus or by taxi, or you can ask to be picked up from the airport. It’s worth the effort, since you won’t be more comfortable or feel more welcome anywhere else!

This resort was dedicated to sustainability long before it became fashionable. You can stay either in one of the cozy villas or in the main building. From the minute you arrive, you’ll feel integrated and very welcome. All meals are taken at a long table in the dining room together with the owners and the other guests, many of whom come year after year from all over the world. Only local foods are used, and many are grown in the residence’s gardens and fields. Sadly, the owner’s wife, who was the soul of the place, recently passed away, but her secret recipes are still adhered to.

Yoga and walking tours are available, and the staff will happily help you plan trips to other places on the island.

2. Visit The Birthplace Of El Greco

Domenikos Theotokopoulos, better known as El Greco, was born in 1542 in Fodele, not far from Achlada. It’s a romantic little village in the midst of orange and lemon trees and olive groves and divided by a tiny river. Follow the signs to visit the birthplace of the great painter, who only achieved fame after moving to Toledo, Spain. Copies of his works are displayed in lightboxes in the tiny stone house.

Afterward, have a coffee in the marketplace under the gnarled, ancient trees and visit the nearby Byzantine church with its beautiful interior frescoes.

3. Explore The Mighty Koules Fortress

One of the first things you’ll see as you approach Heraklion is the Koules Fortress , a famous landmark with a violent past. The Venetians ruled Crete for four centuries and built a fortress around the harbor in the 13th century. It was destroyed by an earthquake, rebuilt, and reached its final form in 1540. The breakwater that supports the lower platform was constructed by sinking old ships loaded with stones. After a 21-year siege, the Ottomans expelled the Venetians and added to the castle.

The structure now has two stories, two parts, and a total of 26 rooms, all of which are open to the public. These once served as living quarters, storerooms, and sometimes, as prisons.

4. Be Charmed By Heraklion’s Old Town

Discovering the charm of Heraklion takes a bit of effort and a good amount of walking. It’s Greece’s fifth-largest city, and traffic, noise, dust, and modern buildings come with the territory. However, much has changed in recent years, beginning with the conversion of many zones into pedestrian areas to make sightseeing easier and more enjoyable. The 25th of August Street is a prime example.

Take the recently restored underground gate through the city walls in Eleftheria Square and tour the medieval old town. Admire the Venetian Loggia , built in 1628, which is now the town hall and considered the most elegant Venetian building on Crete.

An impressive sample of the many groups that have ruled Crete can be found at Agios Titos . Originally a Byzantine building, the Venetians rebuilt it in the 16th century. It was then turned into a mosque by the Ottomans and became a Greek Orthodox church in 1925. In between, it was destroyed twice by earthquakes and once by fire, but it was always resurrected like the proverbial phoenix from the ashes.

Be sure to visit the Basilica of Saint Mark and El Greco Square, a little park with pleasant outdoor cafes and restaurants.

For a bit of designer shopping, head to Daidalou and 1866 Streets, with their tiny souvenir shops. If you don’t want to get lost or miss any of the many sights, consider taking a guided walking tour of the area.

5. Imagine Kings And Monsters At The Palace of Knossos

About 3 miles south of Heraklion is the best-known attraction of Crete: the Palace of Knossos . The story of Knossos is a mix of history, legend, and Greek mythology. The vast 185-acre complex dates to the Bronze Age, but it’s now a mixture of archaeological excavations and reconstructions. It wasn’t just a palace, but a settlement with up to 100,000 people living there. King Minos — part legend and part historical figure — ruled for a long time, and the complex’s labyrinth is attributed to him. According to Greek mythology, he had the maze built to contain his monster of a son — the Minotaur, half man and half bull — and fed him human sacrifices.

Upon entering, you’ll pass a bust of Sir Arthur Evans, who was responsible for most of the discovery and reconstruction work on the site. Only part of the complex is open to the public; this is the part featuring the distinctive red columns, the throne room, and the frescoes. You will be overwhelmed by the splendor and size of this place.

All visitors must join a guided tour in order to see the site.

6. Learn About Minoan Culture At The Heraklion Archaeological Museum

Heraklion is home to several fine museums. If you have the time and inclination to visit just one, make it the Heraklion Archaeological Museum , because it perfectly complements the Knossos experience. The museum houses the world’s largest collection of treasures from the Minoan period, including pottery, frescoes, statues, and jewelry that will take your breath away.

7. Discover Spinalonga Island

Time travel from ancient history to more recent history on a day trip to the island of Spinalonga . This island off the northeastern coast of Crete has a long history. The Venetians arrived in the 16th century and started to harvest salt from the shallow waters surrounding the island. Because of the island’s strategic location off the coast of Elounda, the Venetians constructed a massive fortress on it in 1578. In 1715, the Ottomans conquered Spinalonga.

The island is best known, however, as one of Europe’s last leper colonies. In 1903, the many abandoned houses on the island were used to house people suffering from Hansen’s disease and isolate them from the rest of the population. The lepers entered the colony through Dante’s Gate, and another entrance was reserved for boats bringing food and supplies. The lepers formed their own society on Spinalonga, complete with shops, bakeries, and a theater. A cure for the disease was discovered in 1948, and after the last lepers left in 1957, the island was abandoned.

Thousands of tourists now visit every year on boat trips from Elounda, Plaka, or Agios Nikolaos to wander the streets and buildings, learn about the leper colony, and explore the fortress.

8. Hike The Samaria Gorge

One of the great nature experiences on Crete is the hike through the 8-mile-long Samaria Gorge . Located on the western side of the island and part of the national park of the same name in the White Mountains, this is an adventure only suitable for fit, well-prepared travelers. It takes between 5 and 6 hours to walk the trail, but the payoff at the end is the much-photographed narrow opening.

The terrain is rocky, so sturdy walking shoes are essential. And since this is a very popular day trip, the route can get crowded at any time of the day.

9. Relax At Elafonisi Beach

After your Samaria Gorge hike, you’ll have earned a day on a beautiful beach in Crete. Located on the southwestern side of the island, approximately 47 miles from Chania, Elafonisi Beach welcomes you with azure waters, sand dunes, pink sands, and a lagoon with a small island that’s home to a nature preserve. During the peak tourist season, the beach will be packed with visitors, so cross the lagoon and enjoy the island with junipers and daffodils, and you might even find a small cove where you can be nearly alone.

10. Tour The Arkadi Monastery

Located 14 miles from Rethymno on a plateau near the legendary Mount Ida sits the Arkadi Monastery . Surrounded by a thick wall, the building features Roman, Renaissance, and baroque elements.

The church is beautiful to look at, but what makes it special is its history. In 1866, when the Ottomans tried to conquer and plunder the monastery, the monks locked themselves in a room where gunpowder was kept; they then blew themselves (and many Turks) up rather than surrender. The event is commemorated in a monument outside the church, and there’s a shrine with the skulls of the monks who died.

11. Appreciate Cretan Folk Tradition At The Lychnostatis Open-Air Museum

This open-air museum near Heraklion gives visitors unique insight into Cretan culture and folk tradition. You’ll find traditional houses, wine and olive presses, weaving and ceramics workshops, and herbs and plants in a fragrant garden. The buildings were constructed the old-fashioned way from local materials. There are occasional folk performances and food and wine tastings. Sometimes, visitors are allowed to touch some of the exhibits.

12. Mingle With The Busy Ladies Of Krousonas

Krousonas, which you can reach by taking a winding road from Heraklion up into the mountains, is a lovely Cretan village surrounded by olive groves, beehives, orange and lemon trees, and rich vegetation.

While you’re there, look out for the Krousonas Cooperative. When Greece went through a serious economic crisis several years ago, the women of the village got together and formed a cooperative where they produced the best Greek specialties — breads, cheeses, cakes, honey, olive oil, drinks, and much more — in a kitchen on the premises. The shop’s scents and decorations are delightful, and the ladies are happy to show you their kitchen and tell you how they produce their wares. The quality is so high that they now supply companies that sell high-end Cretan products all over the world.

Pro Tip: Frequent the island’s small cafes and talk to the locals. I would never have known about Krousonas if a patron in a cafe in Heraklion hadn’t told me about it.

The Athens – Santorini – Mykonos itinerary is very popular for first time visitors who have a week in Greece. Here are some travel tips to help you plan a 7 day Greek vacation.

Plan your Greece trip to Athens – Mykonos – Santorini

Santorini, Mykonos and Athens are three of the best known destinations in Greece. Millions of people from all around the world visit every year to enjoy the ancient history, the beautiful, diverse landscapes, the delicious cuisine, and the overall vibe.

The three destinations are very different from each other. Athens , the capital city of Greece, is renowned for the ancient sites and vibrant city center.

Mykonos is best known for its fantastic sandy beaches, luxury beach clubs and nightlife.

Santorini is famous for the volcanic landscapes, white-washed churches with blue domes, and iconic sunsets.

There’s various combinations of the Athens – Mykonos – Santorini itinerary you can put together. However, it can be quite complicated!

As an Athenian who’s traveled a lot around Greece, I’d love to share with you some local advice, so that you can make the most out of your vacation.

My first tip is that there’s little point in visiting Mykonos during the off-season, which is roughly from November to March / April. Most businesses are closed, and even the nearby UNESCO site of Ancient Delos is not open at this time of year.

So, here are some travel tips and suggestions for your 7 days in Athens, Santorini and Mykonos!

Where are Athens, Mykonos and Santorini in Greece?

Greece is a small country in south Europe, close to Italy and Turkey. It’s divided into mainland Greece, and various groups of islands, known as “the Greek islands”.

Athens, the Greek capital, is located on mainland Greece. Mykonos and Santorini are two of the Cyclades islands in the Aegean Sea, and they are located to the southeast of Athens. Here is a map, and here is a guide on where is Mykonos .

Santorini, Mykonos and Athens all have international airports as well as ferry ports, and they are very well connected. Here is how to travel between them.

How to travel between Athens – Mykonos – Santorini

You can either fly or take a ferry between Athens and each of the popular Greek islands of Mykonos and Santorini.

You should note that there are no direct flights between Santorini and Mykonos. The best way to travel between Mykonos and Santorini is by ferry.

The best order to visit Santorini, Mykonos and Athens

In my opinion, the best possible order to minimize travel time, would be to land at Athens International Airport, fly directly to Santorini, then take a ferry to Mykonos.

From Mykonos, you then have a choice of a ferry or a flight back to Athens, which will be your last destination. This way you will make the most of your time, and enjoy a hassle-free trip.

If you are flying to Greece from Europe, check for direct flights to Santorini. This way, you could potentially arrive in Santorini, and return to your own country from Athens.

Towards the end of this travel guide, I’ve gone into detail about flying to Greece, flights from Athens to Santorini and Mykonos, and your various ferry options. It is definitely worth spending some time looking at this section to get your head around the logistics of putting the itinerary together!!

How long to spend in each destination

With 7 days in Greece, I would suggest that you spend 3 days in Santorini, 2 days in Mykonos, and the rest of your time in Athens.

This is the perfect balance if you want to enjoy the best of all three destinations. In addition, if you are jet-lagged after your trip, you can relax at your Santorini hotel room and take it easy.

How to spend a week in Athens, Mykonos and Santorini

And now, let’s take a look at a detailed itinerary for Athens, Mykonos and Santorini:

Day 1 – Arrival in Athens / Santorini

• Arrive in Athens, onward flight to Santorini, check in your Santorini hotel
• Evening in Santorini – You can explore the area you are staying, or choose to see the iconic sunset from Oia, or your hotel’s balcony!

Day 2 – Santorini

Take one of the numerous tours in Santorini, such as:

• Sailing tour in Santorini: Book your volcano sailing tour here
• Santorini winery tour: Book your winery tour here and taste the famous local wines and Greek cuisine
• Scuba diving experience in Santorini: Book your scuba diving session here

After the end of your tour, you can spend a few hours on one of the black beaches, such as Perivolos, Kamari or Perissa. Or you can head to Oia for the famous sunset!

Day 3 – Santorini

On your last day in Santorini, you could consider hiring a car and exploring Santorini on your own. Have a look at this article about driving in Greece first! You can use a platform called Discover Cars to find a Santorini rental car.

Start by visiting the ancient site of Ancient Akrotiri, and reach the iconic Red Beach and the lighthouse which are nearby. You could then drive to traditional villages like Pyrgos, Messaria, Emporeio and Megalochori.

If you’d rather not drive in Santorini, you could use the public buses, or even take a private sightseeing tour of Santorini .

Day 4 – Santorini to Mykonos

• Ferry to Mykonos, check in your Mykonos hotel
• Walk around Mykonos Town, see the iconic Little Venice and the famous Mykonos windmills
• Have a dinner in Mykonos Town

Day 5 – Mykonos

If you are going to Mykonos, you should definitely take a trip to Delos, the sacred island of Ancient Greece. It is the birthplace of Gods Apollo and Artemis in Greek mythology, and one of the most fascinating ancient sites in Greece. 

• Half day trip to Delos island, including a stop at the uninhabited Rhenia island: Book your Delos tour here
• Spend the rest of the day on one of the amazing Mykonos beaches and enjoy the lively ambiance at the beach bars

Day 6 – Mykonos to Athens

• Ferry / flight from Mykonos to Athens, check in your Athens hotel
• Evening stroll around the famous Plaka neighborhood in Athens
• Dinner and nightlife in Psiri area

Day 7 – Athens

Full-day sightseeing in Athens:

• Take a guided tour of the ancient ruins in the Acropolis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Acropolis Museum: Book your Acropolis guided tour here

In my experience traveling in Greece, Booking.com offers more properties and, actually, better value than AirBnB or other similar platforms.

Where to stay in Santorini

Santorini is a crescent shaped island. The east side is full of black sand beaches, while the west side is right on the edge of a cliff, overlooking the sunset. If, like most visitors, you want to stay at a sunset view hotel in Santorini, you will have to stay somewhere on the west coast.

So, this was your example 7-day itinerary for Greece and where to stay. And now, as promised, here is some detailed information on the flights and ferries you’ll need to get around in Greece during your week-long vacation.

Flying to Greece

International flights arrive at the Athens airport year-round. There are flight connections with the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and many countries in Europe, Asia and Africa.

Santorini and Mykonos also have international airports. During spring, summer and autumn, there are direct flights to these famous islands from many European countries. There are, however, no direct international flights from USA, Canada or Australia into Santorini or Mykonos.

Arriving in Athens

Passengers arriving from the US, Australia or Canada, will often land in Athens. If this is the case, my suggestion is to immediately fly out to Santorini, and spend your time in Athens at the end of your trip. This way, if there are any ferry delays or other unforeseen circumstances, you won’t risk missing your flight back home.

When booking your onward flight, allow for at least 2.5 – 3 hours for customs clearance and other airport procedures, especially if you have checked luggage.

Tip: If you are flying to Greece from outside Europe, you can also look for flights from any European city to one of the islands. For example, you could fly from the USA to London, catch an onward flight to Santorini, take a ferry to Mykonos, and finally make your way back to Athens. Or you can find flights to Mikonos Greece, go to Santorini afterwards, then fly to Athens. 

Flights between Athens and Santorini / Athens and Mykonos

There are two companies flying on both the Athens – Santorini and Athens – Mykonos routes: Aegean / Olympic, and Sky Express. In addition, the low-cost Ryanair flies to Santorini, and Volotea flies to Mykonos.

Each of these flights takes about 40-50 minutes – though sometimes there may be delays, so you should definitely allow some extra time. You can check all available routes on Skyscanner , and book your air tickets directly on the company websites.

Which domestic carrier should I choose in Greece?

As a rule, Aegean and Sky Express offer more comfort and better service. Aegean has received multiple awards over the years, and is generally considered the best Greek airline.

Ryanair and Volotea might offer better budget options, but some of the add-on costs are unclear to begin with. In addition, they often fly out at awkward times of the day.

One thing you should know is that there are several types of airplanes flying the Athens – Santorini and the Athens – Mykonos routes. Whichever company you choose, have a look at the seating areas / airplane specs before you book your plane tickets.

Some planes have four seats in a row, which means two seats either side of the aisle. These planes are much smaller, and can feel claustrophobic for some people. There are also planes with six seats in a row – three per side. These are bigger, and feel more comfortable overall.

Every airline has several luggage options, so make sure you choose the one which is appropriate for you. Airlines can be very strict about weight limits, especially when the flights are full. However, if you are visiting Greece in summer, you can comfortably travel with hand luggage only.

Ferries from Athens to Santorini and Mykonos

Athens has two main ferry ports, Piraeus and Rafina. This means that you could choose to take a ferry to Santorini or Mykonos if you wanted. There are ferry connections year-round.

There are many daily ferries during the summer months, which is the peak season in Greece. You will also have a lot of choice during spring and autumn, which is the shoulder season. In winter, which is the off-season, there are fewer routes.

Ferry routes between Athens, Mykonos and Santorini

Choosing a ferry in Greece can be mind-boggling if you’ve never visited Greece before. This guide will walk you through the entire process!

Generally speaking, there are two types of ferries: the fast ferries / high speed ferries, and the slow ferries.

Most travelers with limited time in Greece usually prefer to take the high speed ferries. Here is an indication of how long the fastest ferries take:

• Athens to Santorini – 4 hours 45 minutes (flight time: 50 minutes)
• Santorini to Mykonos – 2 hours (there is no flight from Santorini to Mykonos)

Which are the best Greek ferries to travel on?

When you compare ferries, you will notice that they have many different features. Here’s a quick overview of things to consider.

To begin with, you’ll notice that the fastest ferries are much more expensive than the slow ferries. It shouldn’t come as a surprise, it’s really a question of time vs money.

However, not all of the fast ferries are born equal. Broadly speaking, there are two types of fast ferries – those that carry passengers and vehicles, and those that only carry passengers.

The passenger-only ferries are smaller, and are generally less comfortable to travel on, as they can be affected by the strong meltemi winds , which are common in summer. This can result in a very bumpy ride, and it won’t be enjoyable for anyone, especially if you get seasick easily.

In case of very strong winds, the ferry ride may be delayed, or even cancelled. I’ve personally had very few ferries cancelled in my entire life, but it can happen. This is why you shouldn’t book a ferry to Athens on the same day that you are flying back home.

You should know that ferry delays are fairly common – I’ve had several ferry delays of 1-2 hours in the past, and even longer. Again, this is usually due to the winds. Hopefully it won’t happen to you, but leave yourself enough wiggle room, just in case.

Best ferries on the Santorini – Mykonos route

Let’s take a look at the popular route Santorini – Mykonos. On most years, there are usually 7-8 ferries per day , and they are all high speed ferries – no slow ferries run on this routes.

As you can see from the table below, some of these ferries carry vehicles, while others don’t. Passengers-only ferries are indicated by a car symbol crossed with a red line.

If you are traveling from Santorini to Mykonos in 2024, it’s best to take one of the bigger ferries that carry vehicles, such as the Worldchampion Jet or the Power Jet.

Note that all of these high speed ferries have designated seats, and all seating is indoors. There is no deck area, and you are not allowed to sit outdoors. However, there is air-conditioning, a restaurant / snack bar, comfortable seating, toilets and more amenities that will make your journey more comfortable.

If you have heavy luggage, you will be asked to leave it at designated areas near the entrance of the ferry. While I’ve actually never heard of luggage being lost on a ferry, please make sure you don’t leave any of your valuables behind.

Last tip: If you are traveling on a windy day, consider taking some Dramamine pills or ginger tablets, to avoid getting nausea.

Few celestial events have the power to capture our collective attention the way this upcoming total solar eclipse has managed to do. And for those making time to witness it, two questions are bound to be on their mind : Will totality reach my area and if so, how long will the resulting darkness last?

Most people across the country are bound to experience the eclipse in some form, but only 13 states fall directly on the path of totality, where the moon will appear large enough to shield all but the sun's outermost layer, the corona.

As you make your eclipse-viewing plans, these interactive maps should help you chart the time and duration for when totality will occur in cities along the path.

The 115-mile-wide path of totality will pass from southwest to northeast over portions of Mexico the United States and Canada.

Mexico's Pacific coast will be the first location in continental North America to experience totality, which will occur at about 11:07 a.m. PDT,  according to NASA .

As the moon's shadow travels northeast, totality in the U.S. will begin at 1:27 p.m. CDT in Eagle Pass, Texas. From there, the path will cut diagonally across the country before ending around 3:35 p.m. EDT in Lee, Maine.

Remember: If you plan to witness the eclipse, proper eyewear is a must until the eclipse reaches totality, then it can be viewed with the naked eye.

Eclipse chasers from SW Florida hit the road to path of totality

Joe Dermody has his cruise ticket. His sunglasses. Even his special "shadow shirt."

He's all ready for the eclipse on April 8 – his eighth total eclipse in 33 years.

Dermody is one of many Southwest Florida residents traveling to see the total solar eclipse. He also might be the most hardcore.

He throws around the word "umbraphile" to describe eclipse chasers like himself  (literally, "shadow lover"). He wants to be cremated in his shadow shirt when he dies. And he's traveled all over the country to see total eclipses whenever and wherever they happen.

"April 8 will be my number 9," says Dermody, 69, a snowbird who works in commercial real estate and splits his time between Fort Myers and Whitehall, Michigan.  "It's an addiction. It really is."

He's not alone in that feeling, either.  Many of the people traveling to Arkansas, New York, Illinois and other states − all places along or near the narrow "path of totality" that stretches from Texas to Maine − say they've seen total eclipses before and can't wait to do it again.

"It is an otherworldly experience," says Naples resident Dave Higgins, 69, a retired technology consultant who has seen five total eclipses. "Nothing in your everyday experience can prepare you for what you're going to see in a total eclipse."

A total solar eclipse: You just need to see it to understand

Simply put: A total solar eclipse is awe-inspiring .

Those rare eclipses happen when the moon passes between the sun and Earth and plunges a narrow stretch of land into the moon's shadow. And Dermody says you have to see them in person to appreciate them.

"It's one of those weird events of nature that does not come across at all in photographs or video," he says.

As the moon travels across the sky to block the sun, the sky starts to darken and the moon's shadow traces a path across the face of the Earth.

Partial eclipses often look like a cloudy day, Higgins says. But as you approach 99 percent coverage of the sun by the moon, all that changes. The shadow races across the Earth like a storm cloud approaching. The sky gets darker and darker.

"As the sun disappears, that darkness just sweeps over you," says Higgins, an amateur astronomer who's seen four total eclipses and is a member of the Everglades Astronomical Society.  "The stars come out and the planets come out. It's breathtaking. There's nothing like it."

Other things happen, too. The temperature drops. Insects start to chirp. Animals act weird.

"You cannot see the hand in front of your face," says Carol Brott, 82, of Cape Coral, who plans to shoot photos of the eclipse with her husband in Hot Springs, Arkansas. "Everything is still."

That includes their family dog, who freaked out a little when they saw the 2017 total eclipse in North Carolina. "She stayed perfectly still," Brott says.

Jamie Dallas, 43, of North Fort Myers saw the 2017 eclipse from her hometown of Carbondale, Illinois. And she says it blew her mind.

"The animals, the crickets came out," she says. "Everything seemed to think it was nighttime. The birds got quiet. Different, other birds started making noises. …

" We were directly under it. I felt like nobody on Earth could've been closer to it. It was, like, right above our heads."

Another big change: Colors are just … different.

That's why Dermody always wears his special shirt he calls his "shadow shirt" or "eclipse shirt." He's worn the green- and red-paneled shirt to all eight eclipses he's seen −and one day he plans to be cremated in it, too.

The shirt really shows off the optical phenomenon called the "Purkinje effect," he says. Colors dramatically change during a total eclipse: Red looks black, green looks white, and blue looks gold.

"People don’t really understand what's happening," Dermody says. "They just realize things don't look like they normally do. Colors are not right. The colors in the sky are strange."

Hitting the road to see the eclipse in other U.S. states

That’s why many Southwest Floridians are traveling to see the eclipse. For them, it's a must-see event.

Southwest Florida will see a partial eclipse on April 8, but cities along the path of totality will see a total eclipse with the moon completely or nearly completely blocking the sun.

Many Southwest Florida residents have been making their travel plans for a year or more. And it's a good thing, too: Most hotels along the path of totality have long ago been booked solid.

Linda Westphal, 61, of Fort Myers is traveling to Austin, Texas. She saw the 2017 eclipse in the Chicago suburbs – which happened on a cloudy day and only saw about 80 percent coverage − and she immediately started making plans to see the next one in 2024.

"I think I just underestimated how cool it would be,"  says Westphal, a self-described "weather geek" and a retired training consultant for a technology consulting company. "I just got a glimpse of that (what a total eclipse might be like). And I thought, 'Next time, I want to go somewhere where it’s gonna be 100 percent.'"

Dallas loved her first eclipse so much, she wanted all her friends and family to experience one, too. So she and her longtime boyfriend rented an RV, bought 150 pairs of eclipse glasses and set up a Facebook event page for a big eclipse-watching party April 8 on an empty lot in Murphysboro, Illinois.

All their friends were invited to camp out for a day packed with deejayed music, glow-in-the-dark frisbees, beer pong, food, yard games and more.

"It’s turning into a festival," Dallas says and laughs. "It's gonna be a good time. Now we just have to hope the weather agrees with us."

That's what everybody hopes, in fact. A cloudy day would ruin everything.

To make sure that doesn’t happen, Dermody likes watching eclipses from a cruise ship. The ship can easily move to a better viewing spot free of clouds.

That's where he'll be on April 8: A cruise ship near Mazatlan, Mexico. "Mazatlan is where this eclipse first makes landfall," he says.

The 2024 eclipse: It's now or never for many people

The next total eclipse of this quality won't happen in the United States until 2045, Dermody says. That'll be what some call the next Great American Eclipse.

So, for many people, this is their last chance to see a total solar eclipse in the United States.

"I'm excited," Higgins says. "I'm going to be almost 70 years old. And unless I want to travel to a different continent, this is probably the last one I'll see."

For him and many others, it's either now or never.

"I guess it's not really a once-in-a-lifetime event," Westphal says. "But it's a nearly only once-in-a-lifetime event."

Still, others are hopeful that this won't be their last eclipse in the United States. Especially hardcore fans like Dermody.

This eclipse is the best one to see since 1806, Dermody says: Meaning the total length of totality – the time the moon completely blocks the sun – and the most people who will be able to see it.

The 2045 eclipse will pass near Fort Pierce, Florida, with more than six minutes of totality, he says. And if he's alive and physically able, you better bet he'll be there.

And he'll be wearing his "shadow shirt," too.

"My goal in life is to make it to that eclipse," Dermody says. "I'll be 91. My parents both made it to 91. And I think I can do it."

4.0 magnitude aftershock recorded in New Jersey, USGS says

An aftershock of a preliminary magnitude 4.0 has struck just southwest of Gladstone, New Jersey, according to the United States Geological Survey .

It happened at about 5:59 p.m. ET, USGS said.

The aftershock comes nearly 8 hours after the main shock of 4.8 magnitude this morning. There have been at least 10 aftershocks, though most were in the 1.8 to 2.2 magnitude range.

A 4.8 magnitude earthquake rattled buildings across parts of the US Northeast on Friday morning, according to the US Geological Survey, with tremors felt from Washington, DC to New York City and to Maine.

It was the third-largest earthquake recorded in the area in the last five decades and the strongest in New Jersey i n more than 240 years , the USGS said. But with authorities reporting little or no damage, and minimal travel disruptions, people soon resumed their everyday lives.

Here's what to know:

• New Jersey: Gov. Phil Murphy said there are limited reports of damage and "little to no injuries" in the state. The USGS recorded at least six aftershocks in the immediate area of the initial earthquake. In an area more than 30 miles from the epicenter, three neighboring homes in Newark were evacuated after residents reported structural damage, according to Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé.
• New York: Gov. Kathy Hochul said there were no "life-threatening situations" after the earthquake and no reports of damaged buildings . There was one report of a gas line leak, but so far there's no “major” infrastructure impact, state officials said . New York City Mayor Eric Adams also said there have not been any reports of injuries and told people to " go about their normal day ." Additionally, all aspects of the New York City transit system were operating safely, said Metropolitan Transport Authority CEO Janno Lieber.
• Philadelphia: The Philadelphia Police Department received "over 200 calls" from 911 "in a very short period of 20 minutes," following the earthquake, according to Commissioner Kevin J. Bethel. But, there were no injuries reported in the city, Mayor Cherelle L. Parker said.
• Connecticut: State officials did not report any significant damage. Emergency management officials said their operations center was partially activated as agencies inspected key infrastructure points.
• Travel: Runways at the three main airports servicing the New York City area were inspected and cleared, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Port Authority also said there were no operational or physical impacts to the bridges and tunnels. Amtrak said its trains were r unning at normal speeds after restrictions were put in place for track inspections.
• Widespread impact: The shaking was felt by millions of people across hundreds of miles of the Northeast — a phenomenon made more likely by a few factors, including the geology of the region itself, according to the USGS. Rocks in the eastern US are much older, denser and harder, making them more efficient conduits of the seismic energy released by an earthquake, allowing it to travel in a more potent form over longer distances, the USGS says.

Amtrak trains resume running at normal speeds

Amtrak trains are back to operating at normal speeds after an earthquake in New Jersey on Friday, the company said.

It said it started inspecting its tracks shortly after 11 a.m. ET, and put speed restrictions in place throughout the region. Amtrak said it has now completed those inspections.

“As of 3:30 PM ET, All inspections have been completed and service has been restored to normal speed. Residual delays should be expected,” Amtrak  posted  on X.

At least 6 aftershocks recorded following New Jersey earthquake, USGS reports

There have been at least six aftershocks in the hours following the New Jersey earthquake Friday morning, according to United States Geological Survey data. 

The initial earthquake was felt in northern New Jersey just before 10:30 a.m. ET, and the aftershocks were all recorded in the immediate area of the earthquake, USGS said.

According to USGS, the largest of the six aftershocks was 2.2 magnitude, recorded just after 1:30 p.m. ET.

Here's a timeline (all times are ET):

• 10:23 a.m.: The initial 4.8 magnitude earthquake occurred
• 11:20 a.m.: 2.0 magnitude aftershock
• 11:37 a.m.: 1.8 magnitude aftershock
• 11:49 a.m.: 2.0 magnitude aftershock
• 12:31 p.m.: 1.8 magnitude aftershock
• 1:14 p.m.: 2.0 magnitude aftershock
• 1:32 p.m.: 2.2 magnitude aftershock

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said in a social media post that "aftershocks of these size are normal and are not expected to cause further damage."

The governor said there have been no reports of injuries or damage.

When an earthquake rattled buildings across the Northeast Friday morning, stunned residents described initially thinking a passing tractor-trailer or freight train was passing them before they realized it was something more.

There were reports of the 4.8 magnitude quake being felt from Philadelphia to New York City, according to the US Geological Survey.

3 neighboring homes in New Jersey evacuated after reporting structural damage, offical says

Three neighboring homes in Newark, New Jersey, have been evacuated after residents reported structural damage following this morning’s earthquake, according to the local public safety director. 

Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé told CNN no injuries have been reported after firefighters responded to reports of damage at the homes in an area more than 30 miles from the earthquake’s epicenter. 

He said 10 families were relocated from the buildings, including 25 adults and three children.

Fragé added that all Newark city buildings, including City Hall and recreation centers, are closed. He said the city is inspecting buildings for any potential damage and power outages. 

Also in New Jersey’s Essex County, in Montclair, officials believe the earthquake caused a water main break, according to an update from the Office of Emergency Management for the Township of Montclair. The OEM said the water bureau is working to repair the line. 

The Montclair OEM said authorities have conducted a damage assessment of the township and there are no signs of damage to the infrastructure and all schools and municipal properties report no damage.

Today's earthquake was the strongest in New Jersey in more than 240 years

The rare 4.8 earthquake that struck northern New Jersey Friday was the third-strongest to strike the state, according to CNN analysis of US Geological Survey data.

The Friday morning earthquake also marked the strongest since 1783, more than 240 years ago. Two 5.1 magnitude temblors are the only stronger quakes in the state — one in 1755 and another in 1783. Both happened before New Jersey became a state in December 1787, but happened in the geographic area that now comprises the state's boundaries.

The quake is the third-strongest to hit the Northeast in 50 years and the 10th-strongest of all time in the region, USGS data shows.

Earthquakes in New Jersey and the region are rare. There have only been 24 earthquakes of 2.5 magnitude or greater in New Jersey since 1700.

All aspects of New York City transit system operating safely after earthquake, MTA chief says

All aspects of the New York City transit system are operating safely following this morning’s earthquake, the Metropolitan Transport Authority, which runs the city's subway and other forms of public transit, said.

MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber said every part of the transit system operated safely during the earthquake, as well.

He said initial facility inspections have been completed, including inspections of the seven bridges the MTA operate.

“I want to emphasize those were designed to withstand much stronger seismic impact than we experienced today,” he added.

According to the  MTA website , MTA Bridges and Tunnels (B&T) serves more than 900,000 vehicles on an average day. In 2019, it carried more traffic than any bridge and tunnel authority in the nation — more than 329 million vehicles, the MTA says. 

Lieber said MTA frontline staff have been directed to report any abnormalities in the system, but he said nothing had been flagged so far. 

There's a low likelihood of aftershocks following today's quake, New York City's emergency chief says

There is a low likelihood of aftershocks following Friday's 4.8 magnitude earthquake that rattled several Northeast cities, New York City Emergency Management Commissioner Zachary Iscol said. 

Iscol, however, urged New Yorkers to remain vigilant.

“If you are outside during an aftershock, please move to an open area, away from buildings, trees and power lines. If you are driving, pull over to a safe location," he said at a news conference Friday alongside New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

Iscol said there were no major impacts or safety events related to the earthquake, and added that New Yorkers can call 311 to report any damage. 

The quake, he said, triggered the activation of the city's emergency response teams and prompted officials to issue guidance to the public. 

“We activated our protocols for this earthquake, we immediately began coordinating with all city, state, federal and our utility partners. Public notifications were sent out both by Notify NYC and our wireless emergency alert system,” he said.

Milwaukee and Wisconsin are not on the eclipse's path of totality and will only experience a partial solar eclipse where the moon only covers part of the sun. But a cloudy forecast caused by a low-pressure system developing out of the west might make it difficult for Wisconsinites to catch a glimpse of some of the best views of the eclipse.

Some states in the path of totality, such as Texas and Oklahoma, are also forecasted to experience cloudy and rainy conditions. Clear skies in the path of totality are most likely in northern New England and Upstate New York, according to the National Weather Service . Clear skies have become more likely from southern Missouri into central Indiana, however there is still uncertainty, according to NWS as of Thursday.

What's the closest city from Milwaukee to dive to see clear skies during the full solar eclipse?

Located in central Indiana, Indianapolis will see the total solar eclipse on April 8 at 3:06 p.m. Indianapolis is the closet major city that Wisconsinites can drive to that will experience the total solar eclipse. From Milwaukee, Indianapolis is about a four-hour and 15-minute drive.

The National Weather Service is forecasting that clear skies are now more likely over Indianapolis and Central Indiana. Northern and southern Indiana are still expected to experience some clouds. Which states will experience cloudy skies and storms during the full solar eclipse?

Rain showers are possible near the path of totality during the solar eclipse across Texas , Oklahoma , Arkansas, Ohio , northwest Pennsylvania and western New York, according to NWS. Thunderstorms are also likely in the South-Central U.S. Monday evening and Tuesday. Severe weather and flash flooding could be possible and may result in hazardous travel conditions after the eclipse, NWS says.
