Starting with the capital city of London, here you will bear witness to spectacular buildings of great historical significance. At a height of over 96 meters, London’s famous clock tower Big Ben (formally called The Elizabeth Tower), stands at the north end of the Houses of Parliament in Westminster. If architectural wonders excite you, then you also need to head to the Baroque masterpiece St. Paul’s Cathedral, and Buckingham Palace, where depending on the timing of your visit, it is possible to witness the customary Changing of the Guard ceremony.

The Tower of London is another famous site where a whole host of attractions await you, including viewing an impressive display of the Crown Jewels. Shoppers will have the joy of places like Oxford Street, Regent Street, Convent Garden and Knightsbridge’s legendary Harrods department store to explore. A trip to the British Museum will bring hours of entertainment, with multiple galleries and special exhibitions hosted throughout the year. Meanwhile, the London Eye gives a great bird’s eye view of this captivating city and enables you to see all the places you’ve been to on foot from a different perspective. 

Further afield in the county of Dorset, literature fans can connect with Victorian novelist Thomas Hardy by taking a trip to the picturesque village of Evershot, an area of beauty that features in many of Hardy’s literary works. Likewise, Stratford-upon-Avon - William Shakespeare’s birthplace – also needs to be on the list as it has multiple places of interest including The Royal Shakespeare Theater and the MAD Museum.

If journeying to the New Forest in Hampshire, the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu will keep car-enthusiasts occupied and makes a great day out for the whole family. As the most-famous prehistoric monument in Europe, Stonehenge will give insights into life in England 5,000 years ago, while the royal residence Windsor Castle, one of the world’s most famous castles, also has a fascinating history to uncover. 

English cuisine has been influenced by dishes and flavors from many countries and therefore offers a wide range of flavors and cooking styles. A ‘full English’ breakfast includes sausages, bacon, baked beans, toast, tomatoes, mushrooms and eggs, and sometimes extras like hash browns and black pudding; a sure-fire way to remain full for the rest of the morning, if not the day!

Traditional English meals are typically filling, comforting and often quite stodgy. Staples like fish and chips (battered cod or haddock and thick-cut chips), roast dinner with all the trimmings (often roast beef with Yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes and large helpings of vegetables and gravy), pasties (folded pastry casing with savory fillings of various combinations), bangers and mash (sausages with mashed potato), and pies (steak and kidney pie and pork pies being particularly popular) are what would be deemed ‘English’.

However, curries are also hugely popular in England, as are Italian, Thai, Chinese and Indian cuisine. Much like main courses, English desserts are hearty too. Hot puddings are usually served with custard, cream or ice-cream, such as crumble, apple pie, sticky toffee pudding, jam roly-poly pudding, and bread and butter pudding (consisting of layers of buttered bread covered with a mixture of eggs and milk, seasoned with nutmeg, cinnamon or vanilla, then baked). 

England also knows how to do cakes exceptionally well; Battenberg (with pink and yellow squares of sponge held together with jam and wrapped in a marzipan blanket), Victoria sponge cake, Chelsea buns (a currant bun drizzled with icing), and Eccles cakes (a flaky butter pastry cake filled with currants) being a few examples.

Have we mentioned tea yet? Since the first import in 17th century, tea has been a big hit with the Brits and continues to be the go-to beverage. Tea can simply be just a cup of tea, or it can be an event in the form of: cream tea – often involving a mid-afternoon outing at a café where the tea comes with scones, covered with generous helpings of rich cream and jam; and afternoon tea, where said drink is accompanied with a delightful selection of finger sandwiches and exquisite cakes that are beautifully displayed. The latter is a great way of indulging with loved ones or celebrating special occasions and depending on where it is consumed, can be anything from a low-key outing catching up with a friend to a rich indulgence that you get dressed up for.

Just to confuse matters, many Brits will talk of cooking or eating their tea and in this context, they are referring to their evening meal. Aside from tea, another faithful soft drink is squash (or cordial); it has nothing to do with squash the vegetable and instead consists of a sweet, concentrated fruit-flavored liquid that is diluted with water before tasting (available in multiple flavors). Ginger beer also has a misleading name as it is in fact a carbonated soft drink.

When it comes to alcohol, you will have a vast array of beers, ales and ciders to choose from. Gin is also popular and the base ingredient in Pimm’s, another well-loved British drink that in the summer, is often mixed with traditional lemonade or ginger beer and pieces of fruit, then served as punch. 

Out in natural landscapes like England’s many forests and open countryside, rabbits, badgers, foxes, hedgehogs and deer are some of the animals that can be found. In places like the New Forest, wild ponies roam freely (they are owned by the New Forest Commoners but given the freedom to wander through the forest as they please).

Bird life is rich in both natural and urban areas, with examples including kestrels, gulls, sparrows, magpies, doves, starlings, blackbirds, swallows, herons, quails, pheasants, and a variety of species of owl. England’s coastline is similarly rich in wildlife, given that it offers vibrant habitats within its sand dunes, beaches, cliffs and rocky outcrops. Otters, seals, harbor porpoises, basking sharks and dolphins can be spotted in British waters at various times of year.

Taking one of the many UK tours on offer can be a great way to explore the United Kingdom if this is one of your first trips in the UK. There are several advantages to taking a guided or self-guided tour for part (or all) of your time visiting the UK. 

Guided tours of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland allow you to minimise the travel hassle as you’ll have a company to do most of the planning for you, and many of the United Kingdom tour package options we’ve included here allow you to see far more of the UK in a shorter period of time than it would be possible to do on your own.

Coach tours UK options are a convenient way to travel around with the rest of your group and often allow more to be fitted into an itinerary than independently travelling by train.

Staying at 4* accommodations throughout the trip, this itinerary starts in Edinburgh and takes in Gretna Green, the stunning Lake District , historic York, Stratford-upon-Avon, the Cotswolds and Bath before finishing up in London.

Travel is by private coach. 

As trips to England and Scotland go, this Insight Vacations UK trip is one for those who want to see the best of the UK’s history, natural beauty and culture in comfort and style. If you have additional time, we highly recommend adding on extra days in London or Edinburgh (or both!).

Best for fitting lots of England in at a great price

Starting in London and finishing in Edinburgh, this 10 day London – Scotland tour by Trafalgar Tours England is a great option for those who want to see as much as possible during their trip and don’t mind travelling at a faster pace. 

One of the popular tours of England and Scotland, this itinerary spends 3 days taking in the sights of London at the start of the tour, so you don’t need to worry about booking additional time at the start of the tour (unless you want to).

From London, head north to Oxford and Bath before crossing the Welsh borders and exploring some fine Welsh castles . You’ll also visit Chester, Lancaster and Hadrian’s wall before finishing in Edinburgh. 

If you want to include a trip to Wales in your UK tour itinerary then this is a great tour to go for, and history lovers will enjoy every stop of this trip that showcases the UK’s history from the Wars of the Roses to Roman Bath – you even get to stay at Ruthin Castle in Wales – a 13th century castle with its original moat!

Best for seeing it all in seven days

If you only have seven days to spend in the UK, this whistle-stop tour will whisk you up and down the length and breadth of Britain to introduce you to the highlights. Included on the itinerary are a list of destinations for day trips outside London – and beyond. 

The cities of Bath, Cambridge and York in England, plus the Scottish capital of Edinburgh, are included. Stratford-upon-Avon is also visited as the home of the UK’s most revered playwright. During the last day, you can also choose to take an optional side trip to one of the Western Isles – namely Iona, Kerrera, Mull or Staffa. Alternatively, climb up Battery Hill in Oban or call into the 

 local Whisky Distillery. Finally, before heading back to Edinburgh, visit the Kelpies and Stirling Castle.

Best for English countryside and Roman history

Following the route of Hadrian’s Wall makes for one of the best road trips in the UK. Though the wall is quite justifiably famous, the route along it is far less touristy than other parts of the British Isles. The wall stretches from near Newcastle-upon-Tyne in the east to the compact city of Carlisle in the west. 

Hadrian’s Wall can be found within the more peaceful parts of England’s two most northerly counties. As this is a walking tour you’ll need a reasonable level of fitness, but this also means you’ll get up really close to the sights of Cumbria and Northumberland. And of course the unspoiled English countryside, with its dry stone walls and sheep-dotted emerald fields. 

To give you some idea of the distances, the first day’s walk is around eight miles, between Carlisle and Irthington. Other walks include the six mile trek between Lanercost Priory and Gilsland, the three-and-a-half Walltown Crags to Haltwhistle route and seven miles from Once Brewed to Brocolitia Fort. It’s also nine miles from Chollerford to East Wallhouses, and about five from East Wallhouses to Wylam.

Group photos at Anne Hathaway cottage but no time to see cottage or gardens .then dropped off at shakespeares birthplace for shops !! Long way to Culloden not to have time to go into the museum. Too many hours at Blarney on a wet day in the woolen mill. But apart from that Rosemary was fantastic Julian great driver took a while to warm... enjoyed our holiday but not one of our better cosmos experiences.

Our only criticism is that we were rushed through the best sites because of the bus/coach schedule and there was not enough time to visit the site, grab lunch, and/or visit souvenir shops or local vendors. We had barely enough time to quickly hit the highlights and skip some of the more interesting aspects of the location before having to board the coach.

My family from the US came over for my birthday celebrations in March and arranged a 2-day private tour with Andrew and Graham. In a nutshell, it was amazing. It was just before lock-down when things were starting to close and have limited access, but Andrew managed to change the schedule accordingly to ensure that still we got the most out of the tour.

He and Graham were great company and by the end of the 2 days' we had all bonded! My cousin uses a wheelchair and they seem-lessly assisted him in and out of the vehicle.

We had a great time and saw so much in a short time. Andrew's extensive knowledge on each destination was captivating and his passion for the subjects he talked about was evident.

We came in for a week to visit family and did a private and personalized tour of the London area with Luxury Vacations UK. Everything went fabulous! We had two tour guides, Andrew and Graham, and traveled in style in a very comfortable 15 seat Mercedes minibus for two full days. They even had a professional SLR camera and took some nice group photos for us. Their friendly nature and deep personal knowledge of British history made the experience of visiting some of the castles and churches only that much better.

There were some special needs for one of us and they took care of getting a scooter rented and available for us the whole time we were there. if you are planning to visit the UK, and want to do it "right" then I highly recommend their services. Thanks again Luxury Vacations UK!

We used their services for a week when we visited London in May of 2019. They were very professional, on time in picking us up at our hotel, and the van was impeccable. Also, they bought the tickets for the attractions we visited which was so helpful for a party of 18.

We were delighted with the tour guides and driver who were wonderful to us. Especially Andrew, who upon learning of our granddaughter's birthday, bought her a book about birds which she loves.

I would highly recommend them and would certainly use them again.

Luxury vacations tour of Wales and England Our group of four ladies had a fabulous five day private tour with Luxury Vacations. After a one day tour in London, our private guide Chris Abbott joined us for the remainder of our trip. Chris was excellent. He was very knowledgeable, easy going, fun and flexible. Chris was even able to put up with four loud, laughing ladies for four days—quite a gentleman.

The staff at Luxury Vacations were polite and made it easy to plan our trip. They worked with us to plan a trip that catered to our specifications. Our accommodations were picturesque and high end.

Coach service offers journeys across the UK for knockdown price of £2 each way

Hundreds of cut-price, sustainable intercity journeys are on special offer this week for trips across England, Scotland and Wales

A transport company is offering £2 tickets for coach trips across the UK to be taken up to May 12. With a £1 service fee, that means travellers planning journeys can book long-distance tickets from £3 on the FlixBus website or app.

In England there is a government-backed scheme capping local bus tickets at £2 until December 2024, but this offer opens up longer routes and also applies to journeys into and around Wales and Scotland, where the £2 cap doesn’t exist. So, if you fancy a trip through the blossoming valleys from Bristol to Swansea, or from Glasgow to Inverness via the Cairngorms, now is the time to book. The deal is available until Sunday 21 April.

The international travel tech company is celebrating three years of business in the UK. It runs in partnership with local coach companies using green, branded vehicles. Earlier this year FlixBus launched the first direct electric coach service between London Victoria station and Newport in south Wales two of around 75 UK destinations currently covered by the network.

FlixBus began as a German startup in 2013 and has grown exponentially since then to cover thousands of routes in more than 40 countries, entering the UK market in 2020. Last summer it launched the first ever regular routes from several UK cities, including Leeds and Cambridge, direct to Amsterdam. The buses aim to be cheap, sustainable, easy to book and comfortable, with free wifi and charging points on board.

The lowest-priced journeys include direct routes such as Manchester to Edinburgh, London to Bridgend, Bristol to Newcastle and hundreds more intercity connections. The whole FlixBus Scottish network is part of the £2 scheme with Inverness added as a new destination this month. In Scotland, National Entitlement Card and Young Scot cardholders can get free travel.

Andreas Schörling, managing director of FlixBus UK, said the network offers affordable tickets and “comfortable, modern vehicles” and is celebrating its third anniversary with “£2 travel around the vibrant cities and towns of the UK”. The company aims to “become the best-loved coach brand in the country”, he added, offering “reliable services to as many passengers as possible”.
