They will also pick up the RV from the site at the end of your stay. The first night we had trouble finding parking due to street construction, but our host helped us with that and the other days there was plenty of parking. Exploring San Diego's least and most affordable rental market areas

A new report on rental prices shows San Diego County remains one of the most expensive regions in the nation.

The new report published by Zumper , a rental platform that provides monthly national data on rent prices, found the city San Diego ranks as the 8th most expensive city to rent nationwide.

Why it matters

• San Diego County has consistently shown up in "most expensive" lists and reports showing residents need to earn well above federal poverty guidelines to thrive.
• Recent data also shows most San Diegans are thinking of moving because of the cost of living, including housing.
• And in 2022, San Diego County lost population for the first time in a decade.

By the numbers

Crystal Chen with Zumper said the monthly report also breaks down metro areas including the San Diego market .

“We do kind of a zoom in on San Diego's market and that covers about 12 cities in the metro area and San Diego ranked as the fourth most expensive city in the metro report,” she said.

In February, a one bedroom rental in San Diego was $2,300 dollars, which is a of couple hundred dollars more than the state median price, but almost $1,000 more than Zumper’s national rent index.

The top three most expensive cities to rent in the San Diego metro area were:

• Coronado, with one bedroom rentals at $3,900 a month
• Encinitas, with one bedroom rentals at $2,700 a month
• Carlsbad, with one bedroom rentals at $2,400 a month

The report also shows the three most affordable places to rent:

• El Cajon, with a one bedroom at $1780 a month
• La Mesa, with a one bedroom at $1980 a month
• Chula Vista / Escondido / Imperial Beach, with a one bedroom at $2,000 a month

The report also found that rentals in National City have increased the most since last year.

Looking ahead

But Chen has some good news for renters. City of San Diego rent has been declining for the last five months and this year more than 4,000 new apartments are going to become available countywide.

"Then also the U.S. Census Bureau showed that almost 31,000 more people moved out of the county last year than moved in," she said. "So that results in a slight dip in San Diego's population overall, likely because a lot of people are priced out of the area from the last two years."

Know Before You Go

Don’t expect beach weather year-round.

While San Diego is much warmer than most of the country during the winter months, it still may not be warm enough for lounging at the beach — think daytime temperatures in the 50s and 60s Fahrenheit — so plan for some non-beach activities if you’re traveling in cooler months. That said, even January surprises with the occasional beach day. Layers are always a good idea.

Consider renting a car

While the downtown area is very walkable, San Diego is a sprawling and spread-out city where many residents rely on cars. If you’re looking to go hiking or explore other parts of the county, you may want to have your own car for easier access. Do expect traffic, and build it into your timeline planning.

What’s the best way to get to San Diego?

San Diego International Airport (SAN) is conveniently located near the city’s downtown, and its manageable scale makes arriving and departing relatively sane. If you’re coming from elsewhere in California, Amtrak’s Surfliner is one of the country’s most scenic routes. It travels over 350 miles along the coast between San Luis Obispo to the north and San Diego to the south. If you’re arriving by car, the major freeways into the city include the 5, 8, and 15.

A new airline for San Diego is bringing five nonstop flights in time for summer travel

J ust in time for late spring and summer travel, low-cost carrier Breeze Airways is making its debut at the San Diego airport next month with the first of five new nonstop flights to major cities in North Carolina, Florida, Virginia, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Leading the slate of new nonstop destinations is Raleigh-Durham, N.C., which will begin April 30. The remaining nonstops — to Jacksonville, Fla., Norfolk, Va., Cincinnati and Pittsburgh — all start in early May.

Each of the flights, Breeze says, are seasonal, which means they will not be available year-round. A Breeze spokesperson said that all of the flights, except for Raleigh-Durham and Norfolk, will end by late August or early September. There is no end date yet for those two flights.

Breeze Airways is a relatively new airline started in 2021 by David Neeleman, the founder of JetBlue. While none of the new Breeze destinations for San Diego are currently served by any of the airlines operating out of San Diego International Airport, Southwest Airlines will be offering a single nonstop flight weekly to Pittsburgh this summer between June and August.

With the start of the spring season, Breeze Airways announced on Wednesday a promotional discount of 34 percent off all round-trip base fares booked by 11:59 p.m. Pacific Standard Time Friday. The promotion is good for travel between March 27 and Oct. 1 of this year.

All of the new San Diego routes will be served on Breeze's new fleet of Airbus A220-300 aircraft.

Breeze, which characterizes itself as a "nice low-cost carrier," offers three classes of fares, with the pricier tiers including seat assignments and complimentary checked luggage. Breeze does not charge change or cancellation fees, and for flights that customers cancel, a credit is available for future use during a two-year period.

In California, Breeze is already operating in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Santa Ana (John Wayne airport), and San Bernardino.
