Nicki Minaj (born December 8, 1982) is the stage name of Onika Tanya Maraj, an American rapper and hip hop singer/songwriter from Queens, New York, U.S.
Born in Saint James, Trinidad and Tobago, Minaj moved to Queens, New York with her mother and attended the music and performing arts inclined LaGuardia High School. After an unsuccessful stint at acting rapper Minaj signed with Brooklyn group Full Force and rapped in a quartet alongside Lou$tar, Scaff Beezy and 7even Up. Disappointed with the lack of success Minaj departed from the group and uploaded several songs to Myspace through which she appealed to Fendi, the CEO of Dirty Money Entertainment, who ultimately signed Minaj.
After appearing on the music DVD “The Come Up Volume 11”, Minaj released her debut mixtape “Playtime is Over” in 2007 on Dirty Money Records. Following the release of her subsequent mixtape “Sucka Free” in 2008 the rapper was named the Female Artist of the Year at the 2008 Underground Music Awards. Minaj’s third mixtape “Beam Me Up Scotty” arrived in 2009 with considerable airplay from BET and MTV and featured the single “I Get Crazy”.
2009 marked the breakthrough year for Minaj, signing with Lil Wayne’s Young Money Entertainment, the rapper featured on a number of high profile mixtapes and singles. Ahead of her debut album “Pink Friday” in 2010 Minaj released the singles “Your Love” and “Check It Out”. The album debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 helped by the single “Moment 4 Life” featuring Drake and an appearance on Saturday Night Live.
In 2012 Nicki Minaj joined singers M.I.A. and Madonna to perform their single “Give Me All Your Luvin’” at the 2012 Super Bowl XLVI half-time show, and the same year she became the first female rapper to perform at the Grammy Awards. Ahead of her sophomore album Minaj released the lead single “Starships” and subsequently the singles “Beez in the Trap” featuring 2 Chainz and “Right by My Side” with Chris Brown. Minaj’s album “Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded” was released in April 2012 debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and was followed by a headlining Pink Friday Tour.
In 2014 the rapper released her third studio album “The Pinkprint” led by the single “Pills N Potions”. Minaj has won the BET Award for Best Hip-Hop Artist five consecutive years on the trot, and received two 2015 Grammy nominations for Best Rap Song for single "Anaconda" and Best Pop Duo/Pop Performance for "Bang Bang" featuring Jesse J and Ariana Grande.
Live reviews
This was my first large-venue concert. I was skeptical at first because I've grown used to the small places in the PNW, but it's Nicki and she's in my hometown so of course it's worth it. She's not gonna be doing a show at some hipster coffee place.
4 stars. Nicki is amazing. She fixed a girl's nip slip without embarrassing about it. She gave us all life advice. She did most of the songs off the Pinkprint. Some were full length songs and some were just 1-2 minute snippets. Some people weren't happy about that, but honestly I think the snippets were totally fine. The song usually repeats anyways and 1-2 minutes of it gets to the point. She really maximized the amount of songs by doing that. The second half of the show she mostly did lines from songs she's been featured in and pop quizzed the audience. She brought out Rae Sremmurd for Thro Sum Mo', which was actually pretty fun, and ended on a high note...Starships/The Night is Still Young. TL;DR, she's a frigging peach.
The opening acts were pretty good. Tinashe was great, Rae Sremmurd isn't my thing but they got the crowd hyped. Maybe it's because I missed most of Tinashe and she went first, but I don't recall ever seeing Dej Loaf. Oh well. What kind of sucked is that the opening acts weren't displayed on the two side screens, so I really had no idea what was going on.
Some semi negative things were the venue. I mean, it was great that there was free parking, but it was kind of messy. No safe walkways for pedestrians walking from lot to the ampitheatre. Also, the guy in front of me kept lighting up. If you don't like the smell of weed and cigs, don't go. Another thing I didn't like was Meek Mill doing his set right in the middle of Nicki's set. I screamed a lot of stuff about Drake during that time. Fight me.
Overall, Queen Onika 4 Life.

The Nicki Minaj show In Chula Vista, California was amazing!
I saw the "same" show at the Staples Center in Los Angeles in late June. Rumor on the block was that the show at Staples Center was toned down due to it being a concert surrounding The BET Awards Weekend Events. The word on the street was TRUE.
Nicki's performance at the outdoor venue outside of San Diego was more than fun and fantastic, it was breath-taking and jaw-dropping.
Nicki had an electric energy that just filled you with awe. Her smile was alive, contagious, and sweet.
I found myself entertained by her silly antics when reverting back to songs from the beginning of her hip hop plight. Then the Mood changed to an upbeat dance tempo, and I found myself jumping up and down, and singing every word to her recent hit, 'Truffle Butter' from the most recent "Pink Print" album. More emotion was pulled from me when I found myself fighting back tears during her latest love ballad, 'Grand Piano'.
With countless hit records, and her sensational stage presence, Lil Wayne knew she was a star in the making when he heard her mixtape in 2009.
Nicki, I will never forget the musical talent you expressed that mid-August night at the Sleeptrain Amphitheater in Chula Vista, California. It was definitely, 'A MOMENT 4 LIFE' that I will never forget!
Three minor questions though:
1) Where was the costume with the feathered headdress that you promoted for the tour?
2) Where was Trey Songs?
3) Why Meek Mill???
Still LOVE YOU though Nicki!!!!

'Can’t you hear that boom, badoom, boom boom, badoom, boom bass’…if you can’t then you’re missing out! Nicki Minaj’s catch pop rap tunes are sure to get you dancing and in the mood for a party, even just on recordings, let alone live.
It’s difficult to go too far without hearing on of Minaj’s incredibly successful tracks blasting out, which isn’t surprising since she became the first female artist to have seven singles simultaneously charting on the Billboard Hot 100.
Her sometimes-questionable language is pushed aside out of question by her extravagant costume and staging choices. Her ‘Pink Friday’ tour saw the show opening to a neon lit throne out of which Minaj bounces energetically, buzzing to begin her performance.
The energy she radiates is undeniable, and her enthusiasm permeates into the crowd with her infectious smile reaching even the most reluctant audience members. Her performances are all about having fun, having a good time, and consequently, the audience thoroughly enjoy themselves, jumping along to the well known songs of the moment.
Minaj has a reputation for her wild side, bringing chaos to many shows, but her music enables this flamboyant nature to function positively in a performance environment, engaging and catering for an audience who just want to have a great time…something it seems she can guarantee!
It's only mid-March and I can already state without a doubt this was the worst show of the year!
Ms Minaj didn't sing. Didn't even try to lip-sync. Over the entire concert she probably pretended to lip-sync 4 or 5 minutes, not more.
In between she actually muttered/wrapped a couple of sentences, rather annoyingly interrupting and asking some stupid “put your hands up” deejay to play another song.
She invited 5 other artists on stage, but each left a sub-par impression, wrapping a handful of sentences, no passion whatsoever, then strutting or dancing around the stage.
Usually when life singing is not an artist's strong suit, they try to put on a bit of a show. While Nicki’s show started promising with a unicorn background, there really was no follow-up. Quite a boring affair.
She arrived late on stage and there were annoyingly long breaks in between. There was no flow at all. Not sure if that was because she was stoned (like in her Brussels’ show the week before) or whether she totally didn’t care.
Summary: worst show of the year. Only positives were that the tickets were half-priced, and at least the audience tried to sing a bit.
Nicki Minaj. A global superstar who has risen from the underground via Young Money in a relatively short amount of time yet has been continuously writing, releasing and collaborating with huge acts in the industry.
Her live show is now a melange of theatrics, freestyle and character driven acts as she often teeters between her hip-hop routes for the likes of covers by 2 Chainz and Gyptian to the alter-ego Roman as she plays 'Roman Reloaded' and 'Roman Holiday'.
She has also features a number of worldwide hit singles with her own brand of dance/pop so one act is made up of 'Turn Me On', 'Pound The Alarm' and 'Superbass' which makes for mass dance-along in her audience. Remaining continuously charismatic throughout her long set, Nicki completes detailed choreographed routines with her dancers and wows the audiences with her freestyle ability.
There is a good balance in her sets between the material that has made her a household name ('Starships', 'Right Thru Me') with the material that first gained her attention from the underground scene ('Itty Bitty Piggy', 'Freedom'). Despite the diva reputation, Nicki is an artist dedicated to her music.
The show was great, it was a delight to see the queen of hip hop live! Nicki was awesome on stage, very energetic, showing off all of her talent and with a very good connection to her fans (she even got two persons from the public on stage). I was screaming and dancing all along the show and had a great time.
However, I -as a big fan- was a little bit disappointed on the following points: Trigga's show was a little bit too long and Nicki's one was too short. Nicki sang for 1 hour 40 mins, but she didn't sing some hits that I would have liked to hear and would have been perfect to make a 2 hour long show, such as HOV Lane, I Am Your Leader, Four Door Aventador, Bed Of Lies, and Get On Your Knees. I admit that as I left the building I didn't feel 100% satisfied, I wanted more Nicki!
I think that the show was great and very spectacular, but it was the exact same as every other show of this tour. I was expecting something more personal, that only us would get to experience, not only changing her lyrics to "Belgium won't you save me" which was already so sweet, but we know that she does the same everywhere else. Also the crowd honestly wasn't the best. I wanted to jump and shout all the time but I always was alone. The people around were so still and kind of disrespectful during the opening act and during Juice WRLD's performance, they could've at least showed a bit of interest even if they don't like their music. But Nicki was extraordinary as she has always been, even if she was 1 hour late it was worth it.
Nicki Minaj 'The PinkPrint Tour' at the hydro arena GLASGOW on April 12th 2014 was amazing, a night to remember. nicki Minaj performance was fantastic, the fans were going crazy for her. She is an excellent entertainer, I've seen her once before when she hosted the mtv ema music awards at the hydro also and she couldn't have done a better job. Love her!! Hope to see her again next year!!
Well I didn't go because I don't have money to pay the tickets and I'm so sad plus I was my lip cux birthday party and I couldn't go and I was on tears and I just ice Nicki minaj so much onika Tanya miraj u are my inspiration to sing and write songs I love u and I hope one day I will be like u and be a superhero and superstars I LOVE U NICKI MINAJ
Loved it the atmosphere was amazing Nicki was amazing and we enjoyed Trey Songz too. I cannot wait until she is back. The que was long but moved quickly and we were standing and had enough space once we'd moved to the side. She performed my favroite songs and really entertained everyone. Excellent night xx

Federal regulators are reportedly planning to sue the concert giant over claims that it abused its dominance to undermine competition.
The U.S. Department of Justice is planning to sue Live Nation over alleged violations of federal antitrust laws, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.
A lawsuit will be filed within weeks that alleges the concert giant leveraged its dominance over the live music industry to undermine competition for ticketing, the Journal reported Tuesday , citing people familiar with the matter. Few other details about the planned case were revealed.
Live Nation has faced widespread criticism from angry fans and lawmakers since its botched handling of Taylor Swift’s “Eras” tour in 2022. Days after the incident, news broke that the DOJ had already been investigating Live Nation for months over potential antitrust violations.
Representatives for Live Nation and the DOJ did not immediately return requests for comment from Billboard .
Since Live Nation and Ticketmaster merged in 2010, the company has long faced criticism that it exerts an unfair dominance over the market for live concerts. The DOJ approved the merger at the time, but imposed a so-called consent decree designed to prevent the company from abusing its position. Those restrictions were set to expire in 2020, but they were extended by five years after the DOJ accused Live Nation of repeatedly violating the decree.
That same criticism resurfaced in late 2022 with the disastrous roll out of tickets to Swift’s tour, which saw widespread service delays and website crashes as millions of fans tried – and many failed – to buy tickets. Live Nation pinned the blame on a “staggering number of bot attacks,” but lawmakers quickly argued that the incident was the result of a market dominated by one company.
“Ticketmaster’s power in the primary ticket market insulates it from the competitive pressures that typically push companies to innovate and improve their services,” said Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), the chair of the Senate subcommittee for antitrust issues.
In December 2022, the New York Times reported that DOJ had already been investigating Live Nation for months before the Swift debacle, including reaching out to venues across the country to ask about the company’s conduct. A year later, Reuters reported that the probe was ongoing , with federal investigators focusing on whether Live Nation imposed anticompetitive agreements on venues.
Last year, Live Nation hired Dan Wall , a veteran competition attorney who previously headed the antitrust practice at the law firm Latham & Watkins, as an executive vice president for corporate and regulatory affairs. In a blog post last month, Wall publicly defended the company against allegations similar to those that could be coming in the DOJ’s lawsuit, arguing that ticket prices were set by artists and driven up by the forces of supply and demand.
“In the ongoing antitrust attacks on Live Nation and Ticketmaster, a constant theme is that their alleged ‘monopolies’ are responsible for high ticket prices,” Wall wrote. “Rhetorically, that’s understandable, because if you want to rile up fans against Live Nation and Ticketmaster, there is no better way than to blame them for something you know fans dislike.”

Nicki Minaj Pink Friday 2 tour: See the setlist for her career-spanning concert
Though she kicked off her Pink Friday 2 tour March 1 in Oakland, California, and still has more than a month to roam the country before heading to Europe, Nicki Minaj's enthusiasm and spunkiness are still raging.
On April 1, Minaj rolled into Capital One Arena in D.C. with a glossy spectacle and plenty of her trademark attitude for another sold-out date.
With a career-spanning 33-track setlist – albeit with some shortened versions of songs – Minaj, 41, delivered a fun, colorful set for fans who have waited more than eight years to see her on a U.S. tour again.
Her anticipated “Pink Friday 2” album arrived in December and was preceded by a snappy update of Aqua’s “Barbie Girl” with Ice Spice on “Barbie World” ( from the “Barbie” movie soundtrack , for those with fleeting memories).
That hit, as well as new songs including “FTCU,” “Big Difference” and “Ruby Red da Sleeze,” allowed Minaj to slip into her various personas , which she also did gleefully with megahits “Super Bass” and “Anaconda.”
Minaj’s devotees – aka “Barbz” – came ready to play, bopping in the arena clad in more pink than the city’s famed cherry blossom trees.
Here are the songs fans will hear during Minaj’s Pink Friday 2 World Tour.

Nicki Minaj is cementing herself as the queen of hip-hop. Making history recently with the highest-grossing tour by a female rapper of all time, her Pink Friday 2 tour hit the milestone within the first 17 performances. The tour has officially grossed a record-setting $34.9 million USD with under 20 shows.
According to Touring Data, the Trinidadian rapper has also claimed the top spot for having the highest-grossing concert. It comes as no surprise to hip-hop fans that Minaj still remains at the top, a decade and a half after she entered the industry. When she released the album, it netted the largest first week vinyl sales by any female rapper in history. The track “Super Freaky Girl” off the album saw Minaj hit her first No. 1 single as a solo artist. Her career longevity has been recognized by many across the industry. In a 2023 episode of Stepping Into the Shade Room , Ja Rule reiterated her position in the game stating that before her there were no female MCs like her. “Minaj re-opened the door” for her peers which made way for the likes of GloRilla and Ice Spice, Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion and more.

‘I’ll See Drake In the Parking Lot’: Channing Crowder Wants All the Smoke with Drake After OVO Rapper Shoots His Shot at Crowder’s Wife
Drake’s affinity for the ladies has been rumored to be the cause of his most recent rap beefs, but could the OVO frontman have a feud brewing with Channing Crowder? Crowder’s wife recently caught the eye of the Toronto rapper, and now the former NFL star says all gloves are off.
Drake, who postponed and later canceled several shows of his “It’s All A Blur — Big As the What?” tour with J. Cole, performed in Florida on Saturday, April 13. In attendance were Channing Crowder and his wife, Aja.
At one point during the show, the Canadian rapper was lifted into the air, giving him a bird’ s-eye view of the audience. Drake then apparently noticed Crowder’s wife, Aja.
“What’s up?” Drake said over the mic before noticing Crowder’s wife in the distance. “Oh, s—t, the green right there. Fine as hell.”
Videos posted to Channing’s social media platforms showed Aja wearing a green shirt and white shorts as she smiled and danced during the concert.
Crowder did not take kindly to the five-time Grammy Award winner’s advances, saying, “Man to hell with him… I ain’t worried about Drake. I’ll see Drake in the parking lot.”
Aye Future and Metro! I see why y’all still don’t trust him. This man was shooting at my Baby from the air. 🗣️Let me in the booth!!! pic.twitter.com/Aw15q0eusL — Channing Crowder (@OfficialCrowder) April 14, 2024
Aja is a South Florida real estate agent and played tennis at Howard University in Washington, D.C., according to her Instagram . The couple share three children. She has also appeared on “Baller Wives” and has contributed to the “I Am Athlete” podcast, which her husband previously co-hosted.
The “ I Am Athlete ” podcast debuted in 2020 and initially featured Crowder along with fellow former NFL players Brandon Marshall, Fred Taylor, and Reggie Wayne, discussing sports, social issues, and current events. Crowder eventually left the show and went on to co-host “The Pivot” podcast.
Drake has been embroiled in multiple feuds throughout April. Kendrick Lamar’s diss track “Like That” took aim at Drake and J. Cole . Drake then appeared to fire back at Lamar when his own four-minute diss track titled “Push Ups (Drop & Give Me Fifty)” surfaced on social media on April 13.
Fellow hip-hop star Rick Ross also got involved in the back-and-forth when he accused Drake of undergoing procedures to alter his nose and six-pack, referring to him as “ BBL Drizzy .”
Drake has a history of “shooting his shot” with women of every caliber. Whether it’s A-list movie stars or the hottest Instagram model at the time, the “Certified Lover Boy” has not shied away from sliding into the DMs or publicly sharing his admiration. Even athlete girlfriends and wives aren’t off limits to “The Boy.”
One of Drake’s former catches, Johanna Leia, was also seemingly mixed up in the beef. Drake appeared to reserve a bar in the diss track for NBA star Ja Morant, who is believed to be dating Leia. She is the mother of Charlotte Hornets player Amari Bailey. Drake made appearances at a game of Bailey’s at Sierra Canyon School in suburban Los Angeles 2021.
“Shoutout to the hooper out here busting out the griddy. I know why you mad n—s I ain’t even tripping,” the “6 God” rapper said on the track. Morant frequently does the griddy dance before and during NBA games.
“Stay on dat side,” Morant responded on X, formerly known as Twitter, to Metro Boomin’s post which said, “once you pick a side stay there..”
Even four-time NBA champion LeBron James weighed in on Drake’s leaked diss track. “Nothing like 2 heavyweights doing What They Do Best!” James wrote on April 13 on X.
Nothing like 2 heavyweights doing What They Do Best! For the love off of the sport — LeBron James (@KingJames) April 13, 2024
🦉🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 — LeBron James (@KingJames) April 13, 2024
The owl has long been used by Drake to symbolize his OVO brand, which stands for October’s Very Own. Drake was born in October and the brand supports his music and also represents a clothing brand.
