Williamsburg Area Baseball Tryouts and Youth League Registration

Local baseball sign ups and tryouts in and around williamsburg, va..

Have you been thinking of signing up your player for spring baseball? Have you thought about your options for school ball, leagues, rec ball and travel ball? Do you know when tryouts are? Do you know which age group your player falls under? What are the bat regulations? …I get these questions all the time. I wrote this article to help. (Some leagues do not have their registrations listed yet but the links are below for when you’re ready to sign up.)

Middle School and High School Baseball Tryouts

In our area (WJCC, New Kent and York County) 7th and 8th graders can tryout for their school team. The middle school baseball baseball season officially starts on Monday, February 13th. This is when tryouts usually begin.  As far as High School is concerned, this year the spring baseball season officially starts on February 20th.  Some schools are fortunate to have some preseason workouts before tryouts which I highly recommend going to get some work in and get to know the coach.

So what do I NEED to know before I tryout?

VHSL Physical:  Whether you are trying out for middle school or high school baseball in public school, you will need a VHSL (Virgina High School League) physical on file with your athletic director.  You should be able to find  a copy of the form that will need to be filled out by your physician in the AD’s office.  I’ve had many players over the years show up on day 1 of tryouts without this and I had to turn them away.

Bat Regulations: Every HS player in the nation, whether public or private, will have to swing a -3 BBCOR bat…period.  As far as middle school baseball is concerned, its gets a little tricky.  The local MS leagues have different rules.  Here in WJCC, if you are using a Drop 3 (-3) bat, then it needs to have a BBCOR certified stamp on it. If you are using a bat that is more than Drop 3, for example a drop 10, it cannot have a composite barrel.  If this is all too confusing, check out my article on How To Choose The Right Bat.

There are ways to get a leg up on the competition by knowing what to expect at tryouts…so here are some Tips For Baseball Tryouts .

Travel Baseball in Williamsburg

There are two organizations based in Williamsburg… Virginia Venom and the Revolution. There are many more up and down the peninsula but we’ll start with the Venom.

Virginia Venom

venom-logo

The venom is a multi-sport organization that includes baseball, Basketball, Volleyball and girls Lacrosse. If you are a part of a Virginia Venom baseball team, you as an individual (and your team) will have full access to their 8,000sf indoor baseball facility complete with pitching machines, 5 retractable batting cages and 3 pitching lanes. This is one of the things that really separates the Venom from other travel organizations.

Venom baseball has teams from 8U through 17U.

Some age groups are holding tryouts this winter! Click HERE to inquire!

The Venom organization is in its 7th year of existence. Compared to other travel organizations, the Venom is able to offer competitive baseball that is VERY organized and is the most affordable. And you get access to an awesome indoor facility! Venom website with Tryout info is HERE

Is my son 9u or 10u? He turns 10 on —–

I get this question quite a bit. In travel ball, you can always “play up” depending on the skill and athleticism of the particular player. But they must be under the maximum cut off date. In our little leagues and Cal Ripken/Babe Ruth leagues players ages are determined as of April 30th. Meaning, if your player is 10 years old on or before April 30th, he/she will play in the 10 year old division.

Also, if you’re interested in winter pre-season baseball camps, check out our 2017 line up of prep camps and specialty camps HERE . All camps are held in the Virginia Venom indoor facility.

Williamsburg all-stars go to national tournament, a first for williamsburg youth baseball league.

Author

For the first time, the Williamsburg Youth Baseball League had a team that made it to the finals of the national World Series.

Not only did the team of 10-year-olds make the final four, but they ended up placing second while competing against 19 other youth baseball teams from across the country earlier this month.

“For a team from Williamsburg to do that, it’s phenomenal,” said Russell Lawrence, president of the WYBL, which fields recreational and travel baseball teams throughout the year. “There’s a lot of good talent in that age group. It’s been fantastic watching them develop.”

The team that went to the event, held in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, was WYBL’s 10-year-old All-Star team. The 12 players were chosen by coaches from the four spring recreational teams of 9- and 10-year-olds.

The WYBL operates under the banner of Cal Ripken/Babe Ruth Baseball, which operates along similar lines as Little League Inc. The last Williamsburg team to make it to the World Series was made up of many of the same kids, only as 8-year-olds. Two years ago, they played machine-pitch. As 10-year-olds, the boys pitch themselves.

“They’ve grown in height, size, just their knowledge,” said parent Katie Reavis, whose son is a pitcher. “They have such a love and heart for the game. It’s just a great group of boys and coaches.”

The All-Star team won its district and state championships this summer and would have moved onto the Southeast Regional tournament. But because they were Southeast Regional champions two years ago, they automatically got a bid to this year’s World Series (the tournament was canceled last year because of COVID). So the team decided to forgo the Southeast tournament and focus on practicing and preparing for the World Series, said Amy Rains, who coached the All-Star team both times in their run to the World Series.

That allowed the Virginia state runners-up — a team from Glen Allen — to go on to and eventually win the Southeast Regional tournament, earning a spot in the World Series as a second Virginia team. Glen Allen made it into the final four, while a team from Cherry Hill, New Jersey, won the series.

“How cool that two of the final teams were from Virginia,” Rains said.

The Williamsburg All-Stars played eight games over eight days during the national tournament, facing teams from as far away as Hawaii. Ironically, they lost their very first game. The boys hadn’t been in Florida for long, were tired and “just off,” Rains said.

So she gave them one her trademark pep talks.

“I remember taking a deep breath,” she said. “I told them, ‘Whatever happened just now, it doesn’t mean that a week from now, you can’t still be in the championship game.’ Sure enough, they came back and showed they were much better than they were.”

The World Series was full of great teams, Rains said, adding that she’s proud of each one of her players. Two of them even received overall awards at the end of the tournament. But there were many successes — winning four games in a row, a grand slam homerun, some great pitching, making smart decisions on the field and clear evidence the boys had soaked up what they learned.

“To get to the final four was huge,” Rains said. “To take that energy to get into the championship game — they gave it everything they had. It was a success to get to that point. We definitely didn’t walk out of there with our heads hanging down.”

After the final game, a parent from the Cherry Hill team gave a shout-out to the Williamsburg team on Facebook: “Great experience. Great kids and great parents,” he wrote.

Throughout the series, one message Rains repeated was to tell the boys that even if they weren’t having a great game, they shouldn’t stop encouraging each other. That mentality continued on and off the field — many evenings, the boys played in the hotel pool with other teams and made new friends.

“All of these boys are so supportive of each other and cheered each other on,” Reavis said. “They have a camaraderie between them all as well as respect, because they’ve all worked hard to get where they’re going.”

Next up for the team is fall ball, travel teams and — of course -— school. And for Rains, a bit of a rest from an extraordinary summer.

“It was amazing,” said Jeff Rains, who “unofficially” helped coach the team with his wife. “Our local team in the National Championships. So proud!”

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

This special operation was meticulously planned and successfully executed, the SBU informant confirmed.

In one imgae, Kyva's lifeless body can be seen in the snow surrounded by bloodstains. The location where “deserved punishment awaited the traitor” is near the place that Kyva filmed many anti-Ukrainian videos, sources say.

Kyva was a high-priority target, SBU said. His daily routines, movements, and habits were extensively studied in the operation. Despite strong security, the SBU managed to eliminate him just outside Moscow.

“This [Kyva’s elimination] serves as a signal to all traitors and military criminals who have sided with the enemy. Remember: Russia will not protect you. Death is the only prospect awaiting enemies of Ukraine,” SBU Chief Vasyl Malyuk said.

Ukraine’s SBU eliminated Kyva in a special operation in Moscow Oblast on Dec. 6, said NV sources in the intelligence service.

Kyva's “bloodied body”, discovered with a shot through the head, was found in the park of an elite club hotel in the Moscow region on Dec.6, Russian propaganda Telegram channels reported.

Kyva was shot with an unidentified firearm and died from the injuries on the scene, the Russian Investigative Committee claimed.

Kyva had fled to Spain ahead of Russia’s full-scale invasion. He then appeared in Russian propaganda broadcasts in Moscow, actively spreading lies about Ukraine. Kyva also sought “political asylum” and citizenship from the enemy aggressor.

The Ukrainian parliament stripped Kyva of his MP status in March 2022, charging him with treason. He was additionally charged with publicly calling for a violent change in the constitutional order and propaganda on behalf of the aggressor state in Aug. 2023.
